SERMON OUTLINE

HOPING: FROM TEARS TO TRUST

Psalm 42

A prayer for when you’re far from home. Not lost in faith. Just… lonely in it.

Three Questions for when you’re homesick:

1. Desire: What do you really want?

• As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, my God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God? (Psalm 42:1-2)

2. Memory: What do you need to remember?

• These things I remember as I pour out my soul: how I used to go to the house of God … (Psalm 42:4)

• My soul is downcast within me; therefore I will remember you … (Psalm 42:6)

• I say to God my Rock, “Why have you forgotten me? (Psalm 42:9)

3. Resilience: What must you keep doing?

• Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God. (Psalm 42:5 & 11)

A Psalm 42 Blessing

May the thirst in your soul always lead you to living water. When your desires run wild or grow weary, may you remember the One who placed them there. When the path feels lonely or the noise too loud, may memory rise like a song in your chest— of laughter in friends, prayers whispered over you, and the God who was with you then and goes with you now. May you keep the deepest conversation going— with your soul, with your questions, with your trust, with your Maker. And when hope feels faint, may you know God is still enough to carry you back home. Amen.
