he Peachland Classic Car Show, typically the town’s biggest crowd draw event of the year, takes place in downtown Peachland on Sunday, May 17.

“Preparations are well underway,” said Jonathan Wall, President of the Peachland Chamber of Commerce. “We are partnered with volunteers from the Peach-

land Wheel Nuts and together we are working with District staff to organize this year’s event.”

Apart from its value as a spectacular display of beautiful classic cars, many restored to showroom perfection, the show is also a fundraiser. “Among the beneficiaries will be the Youth Activity program run by the Peachland Wellness Centre,” said Wall. “This is a program that provides funding

to help children to engage fully in sports activities when that would otherwise be impossible due to the high cost of equipment and protective gear,” he explained.

“We are fortunate to have had very strong support from our local and neighbouring business communities and their participation as sponsors has been invaluable.”

“Yes, parking will be an issue,” confirmed Wall, saying that

parking in the downtown area will be restricted. “However,” said Wall ,“there will be a shuttle bus service that will run continuously between the Peachland Mall and the Community Centre, so we are encouraging visitors to park in the streets around Peachland Elementary School and take the shuttle.

Street parking from 13th to Todds will be also possible,” said Wall.

More than 130 Pickleball players and supporters dressed to impress (no court shoes or athletic gear to be seen) enjoyed a soldout fundraiser event at the Peachland Legion last week. Guests opened their wallets generously, yielding $6,800.00 to go towards improvements at the under construction outdoor Pickleball courts. Nearly 70 donors mostly from the business community contributed generously with products and services that were used to make raffle baskets and serve as silent auctions items.

“The outpouring of support from local and other neighbouring community businesses was nothing short of remarkable,” said

Lorraine Clair, one of the event organizers. “It was overwhelming,” she added, “there were very few that couldn’t find a way to donate something and many donated far more than we had ever hoped for.”

With a door prize of a member’s original artwork, a 50/50 draw, 30 raffle baskets, and seven silent auction items on the block, many people went home with a wonderful reminder of the evening.

“The Peachland Legion and the Blind Angler played key roles in the evening’s success,” said Lorraine. “They offered excellent service, delicious food and with music provided by the Partimers there was a smooth lively atmosphere that ensured a great time for all.”

CONTAINER GARDENING

Master Gardeners offer expert advice for successful planting

R

aphael Desjarlais of the Peachland Library recently arranged for a couple of gardening presentations. The first was on container gardening, and the second on xeriscaping. Both presenters had Master Gardeners certification and wowed their audiences.

Laverne DeYaegher spoke about container gardening. His slideshow was inspiring, and he impressed the group with a flow of information and advice. Types of containers, watering advice, maintenance, plant choices, and potting were discussed.

Pots vary in sizes, shapes, and material. Short ones for succulents, big tubs for vegetables, old boots for cheekiness. You can bring them inside in autumn and move them as shade and sun needs vary.

Soil and water are how your plants thrive or perish. Well composted, fluffy soil helps retain moisture and requires less frequent watering. Slow release fertilizer in the spring is convenient. Always fertilize onto soil that is already wet. Tomatoes need more frequent fertilizing unless you planted them with lots of compost. Know

the specific needs of your plants.

Petunias in the sun may need water twice a day or more, whereas mother hen and chicks in a shady spot might need once a week.

Monitoring is necessary. Situating the pots according to frequency of watering needs can make watering simpler. You learn how much they need over time and this will vary through the year from once a week to once or three times a day.

Use the finger method. If it’s dry one or two inches deep, add water. Morning or evening are the best times. Water less in autumn. Automatic systems may work against plant health, as they may get soaking wet all the time, which can lead to rot.

If the plant is really dry, put the whole container in a bucket to rehydrate. Put the hose in the pot and don’t waste water by spraying where it’s not needed.

Many people are now saving water from their kitchens and carrying it outside to spot water.

When buying new plants, research first. Plant according to their needs, the sun and shade, and your place. Perennials do great, as do ornamental grasses and vegetables in big pots. Watch out for seed stages and control plants like Creeping Charlie or Jenny. If you plant into wooden wine barrels, keep them wet and the metal rings won’t fall off.

Planting new plants into containers is an art. Choose a cooler day. Water the soil and the plant ahead of time so they are both wet.

Fluff the soil. Take the plug out of the pot you bought it in and if it’s really root bound then spread out the roots. Firmly press the empty pot into the soil to compact the planting site. You’ve made a hole the same shape as the plug!

Remove the container and put the plant in the hole! At this point of the presentation, there were cheers, oohs and laughter at the simplicity of this nifty step. Shove the tag into the side of the pot so you have the actual name for later reference. Fertilize a bit later.

AMAZING HIGHWAY

The Icefields Parkway - a Canadian wonder

rains cross the Rocky Mountains, but there are no railway routes between Lake Louise and Jasper. You can drive between them on the Icefields Parkway but access to that road is limited; no commercial trucks are permitted for through traffic. Railway lines are not possible because of the altitude and high mountain passes.

The Bow Summit on the Icefields Parkway is over 2000 metres high (almost 7000 feet) and is one of the highest points on a highway in Canada.

Construction of the Icefields Parkway began in 1931 as a makework project during the Great Depression. The road is entirely within the National Parks of Banff and Jasper. Tour coaches are numerous

during the summer months but facilities are very limited.

Parks Canada controls activity on the road and the emphasis is preserving the natural environment. Driving south to north, the road follows five river systems starting with the Bow River that flows from its source, the Bow Glacier, and continues east through Banff and Calgary. North of the Bow Summit, the Mistaya River flows north from Peyto Lake.

This is one of the many lakes that have a beautiful blue-green colour caused by glacial rock powder.

The Mistaya River flows into the North Saskatchewan River just south of the Saskatchewan River Crossing (the Crossing). This is one of only two places were there is a restaurant for lunch. It is often very busy during the summer months.

the David Thompson Highway meets the Icefields Parkway.

Following the Icefields Parkway north of the Crossing, you leave Banff National Park and enter Jasper National Park and soon arrive at the Columbia Icefield Centre. This is the major stop on this road and you have an opportunity to travel on special vehicles that drive onto the Athabasca Glacier. This attraction is owned and operated by Pursuit, which is part of the Viad Corporation based in Denver, Colorado.

Some people are not happy that so many facilities in the Canadian Rockies are owned and operated

by Pursuit. Some of these were once owned by the Brewster family before being purchased by Pursuit.

The Columbia Icefield itself is high up at the top of the mountains and the Athabasca Glacier

is one of several that flow down fom it. This icefield sits on top of the continental divide and water flows from it to rivers that carry water to three different oceans.

Water flows west to the Pacific, east to the Atlantic and north to the Artic. It is the icy crown of the continent.

LEGEND: Driving north from the Icefields Centre, there are several good views of other glaciers that flow from the Columbia Icefield.

The Sunwapta River flows north and joins the Athabasca River south of Jasper. The Athabasca River flows north from Jasper and eventually into the Arctic Ocean via the Mackenzie River.

The Icefields Parkway finishes just south of Jasper and completes 141 miles of amazing scenery.

It is truly a wonder highway.

s many readers know, Large Language Models (LLMs) are Artificial Intelligence programs such as Chat GPT and Google Gemini that have taken a simple Google search to entirely new heights.

When once we were thrilled that in five seconds Google would tell us the name of the Provincial Government minister responsible for dealing with the unsafe and unsanitary conditions created by the homeless encampment on Crown land just outside our borders, an LLM (we used Google Gemini) offered to summarize the jurisdictional issues in a briefing note; write a letter to the Minister (short or long version); create a petition that residents can sign; write a letter to Mayor and council; write to a letter our MLA; or prepare a Press Release. We opted for a short letter

to the Minister and in less than 10 seconds were rewarded with this: The Honorable Sheila Malcolmson, Minister of Social Development and Poverty Reduction Dear Minister Malcolmson: I am writing on behalf of a group of Peachland citizens to request immediate provincial assistance regarding a growing homeless encampment located on Crown land directly adjacent to the District of Peachland.

Although the site lies outside municipal and regional jurisdiction, it is in close proximity to homes and has created significant concerns related to fire risk, public safety, environmental damage, and unsanitary conditions.

Because this encampment is on provincial Crown land, local

authorities are unable to enforce bylaws or undertake remediation.

We therefore request coordinated action from the Province—specifically the Office of Homelessness Coordination, BC Housing, and the HEART/HEARTH encampment response teams—to assess the situation and implement appropriate safety and housing measures.

• Provide outreach and housing supports to individuals living in the encampment.

Sunday, May 10th is Mother’s Day

ot long ago, I saw a photograph of a sculpture in Zaragoza, Spain, by the artist Luis Quevedo, named in Spanish “The Woman of Dawn.”

This powerful piece depicts a mother bent over from the debilitating weight of the unpaid, invisible, as well as often unacknowledged work she does daily.

If an image is worth a thousand words, this sculpture is worth triple. And yet, we often hear someone referring to a stay at home mother as a person who “doesn’t work.”

A day spent in any mother’s shoes would show her hours are without limit, and an overwhelming list of what needs doing.

shopping, cooking, cleaning, doing laundry, event scheduling, chauffeuring, clothes shopping, activity shopping, nursing, handling appointments, meeting with schools, buying gifts, planning of parties, caregiving, comforting, nurturing, loving, worrying, and counselling, to full blown crisis managing -- as well as at least twenty things I have left out -- is it any wonder Moms are tired? Not to mention the list of the Moms also working outside the home!

With Mother’s Day this Sunday May 10th, I put forward to Moms on Facebook, the question “What would be your dream come true for how you would like to spend Mother’s Day? And, what gift would you like most?” The results were simple.

Jim Carpenter, President of the Peachland Wheel Nuts, a local chapter of the Vintage Car Club of Canada, confirmed that the club’s volunteers have been working closely with Chamber volunteers and are looking forward to a great day of family fun.

“Volunteers from both groups have been working on the details that need to be addressed including the registration process, figuring out where the cars will be parked, assigning spaces, collecting entry fees, organizing the check-in process, taking care of paperwork and organizing “flaggers” to direct traffic,” said Carpenter.

As usual the cars will be on display in the downtown area, lined up on Beach Avenue and on designated spots in Heritage Park.

“Space is limited to 200 vehicles,” explained Carpenter, noting that to be eligible for participation in the show, vehicles have to be of

pre-1980 vintage. “Vehicle owners wishing to participate were able to register early on in the process,” he said. “It’s always a sold-out event, but there will be a limited number of spaces available on show day.”

Carpenter spoke of two vehicles that will be in the show. One is a 1947 district owned pick up truck that was converted into a fire engine and remains in the care of members of the Wheel Nuts chapter.

The other is his personally owned Cadillac convertible that was used in Vancouver

by Princess Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh during a 1951 royal tour -- shortly before Elizabeth became Queen after the passing of King George.

Give your new plants the best possible start

C

hoosing nursery plants can be an overwhelming decision. There are always new brands, new cultivars, and exciting colourful blooms to choose from. Before you make the trip, here are some things that can make your nursery trip successful.

It is important to do thorough research. I have seen invasive species for sale at all of the garden centres this year. Choosing the wrong plant could be detrimental to your yard and may take years (and lots of money!) to eradicate.

Things like trumpet vine (Campsis radicans) or Myrtle spurge (Euphorbia myrsinites) may look nice, but they will compete with other plants and take over due to their aggressive spreading habits.

May Pole Dance

May Day was the big celebration day each year and always included the traditional English May Pole dance entwining ribbons around a pole to the tune of a fiddler’s music.

Classic Nanaimo Bars (WITH A TWIST OR TWO) INGREDIENTS: BASE LAYER

Melt the chocolate and butter together over simmering water, stirring until smooth. Let cool slightly (so it doesn’t melt the custard layer), then pour and spread evenly over top.

Chill for at least 2 hours until fully set.

½ cup (1 stick) unsalted butter ¼ cup granulated sugar 5 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder 1 large egg, beaten 1¾ cups graham cracker crumbs ½ cup finely chopped almonds (optional) ½ cup shredded coconut

“Never mess with a classic” ... so we did.

In honour of National Baking Day on May 17, we took a bold little detour with the beloved Nanaimo Bar—yes, that Nanaimo bar from Nanaimo—and gave it a couple of playful twists. (Cue the collective gasp… or shriek.)

Martha leaned into a fresh minty version—with just a hint of green for fun—while Lou went the mocha route… perhaps with a slightly heavy hand on the coffee.

½ cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened ¼ cup milk 2 tablespoons vanilla custard powder 2 cups powdered sugar

CHOCOLATE LAYER

4 ounces semi-sweet chocolate 2 tablespoons unsalted butter

INSTRUCTIONS: BASE LAYER

Line an 8×8-inch pan with parchment paper, leaving an overhang for easy removal.

Melt the butter, sugar, and cocoa together over a saucepan of simmering water, stirring until smooth. Remove from heat and gradually stir in the beaten egg—the mixture should turn glossy and slightly thickened.

In a separate bowl, mix the graham crumbs, almonds (if using),

and coconut. Add to the chocolate mixture and stir until fully combined.

It will be crumbly but should hold together when pressed. Press firmly into the prepared pan (a flat-bottomed glass works wonders here). Chill while preparing the next layer.

CUSTARD LAYER

Cream the butter, milk, and custard powder until light and fluffy.

Gradually beat in the powdered sugar until smooth and spreadable.

Spread evenly over the chilled base and return to the fridge for at least 30 minutes, until firm.

Minty Martha: Add ½ tsp peppermint extract + a drop of green colouring to the custard layer Mocha Lou: Add 1 tsp instant coffee dissolved in 1 tbsp hot water to the custard, plus ½ tsp into the chocolate layer Peanut butter: Add ¼ cup to the custard Coconut lover: Add ¼ cup coconut to the custard and sprinkle extra on top Raspberry: Spread a thin layer of jam over the base before the custard Lemon: Add 1 tsp lemon extract + zest of one lemon Classic or creative, these no-bake bars are still pure Canada comfort— just with a little extra personality this time around.

Martha and Lou are cooking and baking enthusiasts who met through pickleball.

Both are from the Lower Mainland and now live in Peachland. Martha works part time at Peachland Elementary as a teacher aide and Lou is a retired nurse.

1852, but grew up in Manitoba. He married Abigail Ann Kimball and between 1885 and 1890 five children were born. Of these, only two survived infancy – a son Alfred Henry (Alf) and a daughter Rita Belle Kimball. The family moved to the Okanagan around 1891.

They are known to have built a house with a splendid view which had a barn and horse corrals. Both Alf and Rita Belle attended the local school. Robert served as a councillor in 1911 and 1912 and again from 1920-26 inclusive. Mrs. Huston died in 1916, aged 64, and Robert followed in 1928, aged 75.
