Peachland Legion celebrates with weekend of music at Cousins Park By Jeff McDonald Local Journalism Initiative Reporter

elping veterans and the Peachland community for a century. That’s the milestone the Peachland Legion will reach on November 11. But the venerable organization isn’t waiting for Remembrance Day to start the party. They’re kicking things off with Music in the Park, a weekend fundraiser of music, food and fun at Cousins Park on Saturday, September 5 and Sunday, September 6. The Saturday concert will feature the well-known Elton John tribute act called Classic Elton, which has appeared across North America. The performer is Andrew Johns along with his nine-piece band The Jets. Accompanying vocals will be provided by 20

members of the Naramata Community Choir for part of the show. The concert runs from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. The Sunday concert offers three local and much-loved bands: The Partimers from noon to 2 p.m., 13 Broken Bones from 2:30 to 4:30, before Alfie Galpin and The AllStars take the stage from 5 to 7 p.m. Some of the money raised will go toward repairs and upgrades to the Peachland Legion building in downtown Peachland, said

Those will include a centre where volunteers can help Peachland veterans and seniors access online information. “We’re working on getting a communication center set up in the Legion where we can help veterans and some of our seniors with taxes and dealing with Veterans Affairs Canada because a lot of our seniors are not, as we say, computer savvy,” said Paige. Other improvements to hap-
pen later this year and next year include senior tables for people in wheelchairs, better emergency exits and improvements to the access ramp for people with mobility aids to more safely enter and exit the building, he said. Paige himself is a veteran who served for 26 years in some challenging conflicts, including Rwanda and Somalia. He said the Peachland Legion has long been an important community gathering place, including on Remembrance Day and the veteran days and dinners they host. Other community groups also use the space free of charge. “With the Peachland Wellness Centre and with various clubs, we don’t charge rent for our Legion,” he said. “We let people come in and use it so that they can celebrate different parties or different events.” Some years ago, the Royal Canadian Legion’s financial struggles were national news, but Paige said the problems that emerged back then were related to a declining membership, which the organization is moving to fix.
