GOOD, BUT NOT GREAT Peachland in the middle of the recycling pack

hen it comes to putting recyclables into the bin, Peachland is part of a regional district that’s good but not great.

That’s according to Recycle BC, which is responsible for curbside collection in the Regional District of Central Okanagan (RDCO) and therefore Peachland.

Recycle BC statistics show that the Regional District of Central Okanagan recycled 43.1 kilograms per resident in 2025, a figure which includes curbside collections, depots and pop-ups. That’s better than the Regional District of North Okanagan at 40.2 kilos, but behind the Regional District of Okana-

“Per resident or per capita, I would say it’s kind of in the middle,” said Recycle BC’s manager of stakeholder relations Ann Goulding. “You’re doing alright, but of course there’s always room for improvement.”

The RDCO turned over responsibility for curbside collection and management to Recycle BC on May 1 of this year. The notfor-profit organization provides residential recycling services to BC, ensuring household materials are collected from households and recycling depots, sorted and responsibly recycled.

Goulding says contrary to what many people think, Peachland taxpayers aren’t on the hook for the cost of the program and haven’t been since 2014, when the responsibility for recycling shifted upstream to producers.

Peachland Royal Canadian Legion prepares to celebrate its 100th Anniversary Submitted by the Peachland Legion Executive Committee

he Peachland Legion received its Royal Charter in December 1926. For those of you who may not be aware of all that our not for profit organization does, we would like to explain.

As we all know, November 11th is Remembrance Day. Our Legion collects donations through people wishing to wear a Poppy. Those funds are used to offer assistance to our military veterans, and RCMP retirees. We also distribute bursaries for qualifying students going to college or university who have had a member of their family serve in either the military or RCMP. We also hold veterans’ dinners and get-togethers at our Legion hall.

If you have ever been to one of our meat draws and 50/50 events and wondered where those dollars go, we are very restricted by BC Gaming. All net proceeds after cost of meat, cost of tickets etc. must go to an approved charity or society. Our first priority is to donate locally. For example, we

have donated thousands of dollars to the Peachland Food Bank and the Peachland Wellness Centre and supported Kelowna General Hospital and Penticton Regional Hospital. Other beneficiaries from our gaming events, held Thursdays and Saturdays from 3-5 p.m., include Central Okanagan Search and Rescue, Greata Creek Camp and Agur Lake Camp.

Our challenge is always to have enough funds to keep our doors open. The building is composed of three parts that have been somewhat “fitted” together. Like anything or anyone over the age of 75, things start to break down! To that end, we are doing a big fundraiser this Labour Day weekend. We are calling it Music In the Park and it will be held at Cousins Park here in the Kindest Community in Canada.

Peachland Climate Action Plan Focus: District Assets & Operations

istrict assets include land and buildings like our municipal hall, community center, fire hall, childcare centre, the Peachland Museum, and the Peachland Historic Schoolhouse.

Other assets are parklands, lakefront properties, playgrounds, fitness facilities, trails, and docks.

District assets include infrastructure such as the water treatment plant, streets and sidewalks, and water and sewer systems. The district owns a fleet of vehicles and other equipment used for operations and service delivery.

OBJECTIVES 1. T o reduce the district’s contribution to climate pollution and improve resilience, climate considerations are integrated into district asset purchasing and operating decisions.

2. T o become more resilient, municipal infrastructure is upgraded or adapted to withstand the impacts of a changing climate. The district has taken steps to ensure critical operations are resilient and can be maintained even during an extended electric power outage.

3. T o become more resilient, natural aspects are protected, valued, assist with climate readiness and minimize the need for built infrastructure.

4. T o become more resilient, emergency preparedness and response plans are updated for disaster prevention and address climate change hazards.

RECOMMENDED DISTRICT ACTIONS D8.1 Continue to seek grants and other funding for improving the energy-efficiency and resiliency of public infrastructure guided by the priorities established in the 2025 Asset Management Plan.

D8.2 Build the new fire hall using FireSmart and energy efficient materials and designs as well as using energy saving all-electric systems for heating, cooling, hot water, and cooking. Then use the building to illustrate the benefits of such construction to the community.

D8.3 Explore opportunities for developing District sources of renewable power that can be integrated into existing or proposed infrastructure.

• In-pipe hydropower generated by micro-turbines installed in the

district’s drinking water distribution system to convert excess pressure into electric power.

• Solar panels. Consider projects with co-benefits such as providing shaded parking with solar panels on the roof or solar over water storage to reduce evaporation.

• Battery storage systems to provide a clean alternative to diesel generators for backup. Microgrid for district operations as explored in Energy focus area.

D8.4 Develop a natural aspects inventory and plan. Investigate training and other resources available from the Natural Assets Initiative, a non-profit that has assisted area governments including West Kelowna and RDCO. D8.5 Develop a local transport point for collecting yard waste.

D8.6 Purchase electric maintenance equipment like mowers, trimmers and vehicles as needed and available to meet future operational demands.

D8.7 Review emergency preparedness and response plans to make sure they are updated for disaster prevention and address climate change hazards.

Natural aspects refers to wetlands, rivers, fish, forests, wildlife, and other aspects of the natural world. They provide ecosystem services such as drinking water, cooling, flood mitigation, recreational spaces, and cultural and spiritual enrichment.

The Munro Lake fire threatened the water treatment plant.

Fire risks that were identified included sediment from runoff and shallow landslide failure that could affect the water entering the treatment plant. Peachland residents rely on successful district operations for health, safety, and the daily life activities.

Some of these recommendations are already started, others will be deferred for later. The hope is that the district will hire a Climate Action Coordinator to help and monitor the longterm implementation of the plan.

After a 35-year career in the corporate world, Rebecca explains that writing has always been part of her life, but now it carries a greater purpose: to think and reflect.

Parrot Sanctuary is closing

A

suddenly escalated. The new owner had come on a visit from Calgary with a view to adopting one of the birds as a match for one she owned. However, when she learned of the Parkes’ need to find someone to take over the running of the sanctuary, she quickly explained her connection to the Calgary Parrot club and offered to take them all.

“That solved a major concern,” said Ray. “Parrots are very social creatures and we wanted to make sure that they stayed together as a family. This way they can all be together.”

Ray explained that there are currently 20 parrots at the sanctuary, many 40-50 years old. Due to the need for adoptions and relocations associated with managing avian flu concerns and preparing for the inevitable future closure, the numbers have dwindled from,

at times as many as 80+ birds.

Ray echoed Val’s feelings. “It is a very emotional time and we are sad it has come to this. But we are so pleased that the parrots will be able to stay together in their new forever home.”

Over the years, Ray and Val have had the support of many volunteers from the Friends of the Parrot Sanctuary Society. “We are so grateful for their help,” said Ray, choking back his words, “their support has been invaluable.”

BEYOND THE HEADLINES

A newspaper without breaking news: The reality of a weekly publication

A

s much as we would love to rival Castanet and bring you “hot off the press” stories with information about important events that have just occurred or are still unfolding, as a weekly publication, we can’t.

If we tried to cover, say, a missing person story, the chances are that by the time you would get to read about it, the person would have been found and returned home for the best part of a week. Not good reporting.

And that is why our coverage of the fire crisis we are facing has to be retrospective: we are not in the breaking news business!

Sometimes, we are able to report on an event in our “In Case You Missed It” section which, if you did miss it, might allow us

to score points on the newsworthiness dimension. We might also score points if we happen to include a story that isn’t yet common knowledge, but that is “hit and miss” and chances are by the time you do get to read about our “scoop” it has been scooped on Facebook or Castanet.

By Monday of each week we pretty much know what the content will be on each page of the paper. Apart from a few last minute changes, the articles are written, pictures assembled, the columnists have submitted their columns, the advertisements are booked, the puzzles and other content are compiled and our designer is laying out the paper and pulling it all together ready to be sent to our printer before

our Tuesday 11:59 p.m. deadline.

The paper is printed on Wednesday (in Coquitlam) and shipped overnight to a depot in Kelowna where it arrives early on Thursday morning. It is then delivered to our office where it is sorted into “paper routes” and delivered by volunteers to collection points on Thursday and Friday -- four or five days after the content was finalized.

So, does that render our newspaper, without breaking news, deficient? We do hope not!

What we aim to do is provide information on topics of interest, talk about the news rather than break it, and promote discussion, debate and a sense of connectedness.

tion. There’s actually no cost to taxpayers for residential packaging and paper recycling,” said Goulding. “Under BC’s Extended Producer Responsibility framework, or EPR, businesses such as retailers, manufacturers, and restaurants that supply the packaging and paper into the marketplace, they’re responsible for funding and managing the recycling system.”

The EPR requires businesses to reduce the environmental impact of their products and packaging spanning the entire product management lifecycle for material that enters the residential marketplace.

It’s the first program of its kind in North America, where producers are responsible for both the financing and the operation of the province-wide recycling system, she said.

Peachlanders will have noticed the new grey and pink boxes that were added to the system when Recycle BC took over the program on May 1. The grey boxes are for non-deposit glass bottles and jars, and the pink boxes for flexible plastics. Goulding said flexible plastics are difficult to process and it took a lot of research and development before making collection of them part of the curbside service. Expanding what residents can recycle to include flexible plastics is one of Recycle BC’s successes. “Pink is for flexible plastics, so anything that kind of like crinkles or, you know, those chip bags, avocado netting, bubble mailers. You’ll be surprised how much flexible plastics you go through in a day,” she said.

And if you’re wondering whether putting a wine bottle

into the gray bin is within the rules, Goulding confirms that it is – but you’re forfeiting the refund you would get if you took it to a bottle depot. “One question we always get from folks is, what about our wine bottles?

You can put them in there. They will be responsibly managed and recycled, but you will not get your deposit back, so that is the only difference,” she said.

So what actually happens from start to finish in the recycling process? Goulding described the process as follows. Once collected from the curbside or recycling depot or from an apartment or condo, materials enter Recycling BC’s province-wide post-collection network. First they go to one of just over 40 receiving facilities around the province for consolidation, then to one of three material recovery facilities where it’s sorted further, cleaned and prepared for shipping to what Goulding called “end-markets”.

These are approved companies or manufacturers that buys the materials and turns them into something new and usable. (One such end-market is a company in Kelowna that buys recycled metals and turns them into new products.)

An example is those flexible plastics that you can now put into the pink bin. Almost all of them end up at a facility in Metro Vancouver that receives sorted containers and flexible plastics and converts them into raw materials.

The raw materials are small plastic pellets that look, said Goulding, a lot like lentils. “Then they’re sold to customers who then use them to manufacture things like new packaging, nursery plant pots, pails, garbage cans, lids,” she said.

And the glass that you can put into the gray bin? It goes to a facility in Abbotsford, where it’s made into new bottles, or to a facility in Quesnel, where it’s converted into an aggregate used in place of crushed rock on building sites.

Goulding said metal containers are sold to companies that turn it into new packaging like aluminum cans or sheet metal for automotive manufacturing. Paper is turned into things like egg carton and other paper products at facilities in North America and Asia, she said.

So while Peachlanders are doing their share of recycling, could they get their numbers higher and perhaps even help the RDCO becoming the top recycling regional district in the province?

Goulding said people educating themselves on the full picture of

what’s recyclable on recyclebc. ca would help people get more stuff into the recycling bags and bins. If it’s packaging, it’s almost certainly recyclable, she said.

“What we want is residents to put more of the accepted materials into their bins or take it to the depot or in the case of certain materials like flexible plastics if they don’t have a pink bin they could also take it to London Drugs,” she said. “Even with metals like aluminum pie plates, a lot of people don’t know that those can go into their mixed container bins.

If you’re not sure if something is recyclable or not, maybe going on the website and checking, so taking that extra step. Making sure it’s clean, give it a quick rinse, and then put it in in the appropriate bin or take it to the depot.”••

two, other residents mysteriously were also “in the know.” And I…I have loved every bit of it.

I wonder occasionally, whether or not this remarkable experience of small town life would have been offered should we have landed in another Okanagan town. Or, as I suspect, this lovely little lakeside town is indeed rather special and maybe, just maybe even a tiny bit magical.

I am pondering this today because we have been unexpectedly called to return to life on the coast.

It is with deep gratitude (and more than a little sadness) that I write this last edition of my column.

Thank you all from the bottom of my heart for welcoming us reformed city slickers into your fold.

I will be forever grateful to have lived here and better for having done so. I am also humbled and grateful for each of you that has generously read my little column.

As it turns out, life in a tiny town, is indeed every bit as wonderful as they depict in the movies. This is not goodbye however, because I intend to be a frequent visitor!

or as long as I remember, I have dreamt of living in a small town. As a city slicker from Vancouver, I could only surmise what that might entail from movies. I imagined walking down the main street of a tiny town smiling and waving hello to known passersby. I visualized entering a favourite restaurant and being welcomed by staff that knew me. I even naively reveled in the idea that occasionally others would know your business before you chose to make it public. What I could not have anticipated was how quickly every one of these things would actually become part of daily life and how dearly I would come to love all of it.

When we first moved here, I began an early morning practice of riding my red cruiser bicycle from one end of Beach Avenue to the other. As I did so, I noticed an older gentleman each morning sitting on his front step as I pedalled by. Each day, I smiled and waved.

Each time, he nodded in return.

Then one morning in late September when all the tourists and visitors were tucked away back in their big cities, I pedalled by and to my surprise saw the gentleman on his stoop, waving at me with a wide smile. I remember grinning ear to ear as I waved back thinking to myself, he must now realize I am not a part timer or tourist but rather a full time Peachlander!

Before long, neither my husband nor I could drive down Beach without waving to a dozen recognized residents and every time we walked into Cibo and Vines, to enjoy a delicious pizza, the staff already knew which table was our favourite. And just like in the movies, if I happened to share a juicy bit of personal information with a fellow resident in our complex, within a day or

Celebrate what’s already taken root

E

very week, I post a quote on LinkedIn — tied to the news, the season, or whatever’s on my mind. This week I went looking for one about first fruits. I couldn’t find one that didn’t secretly break the promise of the season.

Almost every quote about personal growth seemed to be secretly about the future. “Little by little, one travels far.” “Small daily

improvements lead to stunning results.” “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.”

Even the gentle ones, the ones that sound like they’re honoring the present moment, are quietly borrowing their value from something that hasn’t happened yet.

The step counts because of where it leads. The gain matters because it’s presumed to be adding up to something bigger, later, elsewhere.

That is exactly what first fruits does not do.

In the old harvest rites, the first ripe grain, the first apple, the first sheaf cut from the field, was not lauded because it predicted a good harvest to come. It was not a forecast. It was not a sample taken to reassure anyone that the rest of the crop would follow. It was offered because it was already whole. Already ripe. Already worth honoring on its own terms — not as a preview of abundance, not as a down payment against a future yield, not as evidence of a trend worth watching.

So much of how we’re taught to think about progress runs in the opposite direction. Lose two pounds — good, keep going.

Save fifty dollars — good, keep saving. Learn one new word in the language you’re studying — good, now learn ten more. The

gain is rarely permitted to simply be a gain. It gets drafted immediately into a larger story about momentum, about compounding, about where this is all supposedly headed. We’ve gotten so used to treating the present as raw material for the future that we’ve largely forgotten how to let a good moment just stand there, complete, asking nothing further of us.

None of this is an argument against growth, against wanting more, against tomorrow. It’s simply a refusal to let tomorrow be the only thing that gives today its worth. Onward-thinking has its place, but it has a quiet cost: it tells the present moment, again and again, that it isn’t sufficient — only useful. Only a means. Only a rung.

They insist that the gain you’re holding right now, however small, however early in the season,

This road is named for the pioneering six-generation Shaw family, which began in 1906 when Nehemiah Shaw, a native of New Brunswick, came to Peachland together with his family. Of the four children of Nehemiah and Martha, Emmett was a casualty of World War I and only Lorne stayed in Peachland.

Lorne extended his father’s orchard, eventually having 24 acres. Like Nehemiah, Lorne did a good deal of logging in the area. He was logging in Beaverdell when he met Nellie Johnson; they were married in 1928 and had five children.

Say it out loud, or post it, or just sit with it a minute longer than you normally would. It doesn’t need to lead anywhere else to be worth celebrating now.

So this week’s quote isn’t borrowed. It’s mine, and it’s enough.

Martin, the eldest, lived all his life in Peachland, operating his orchard, logging with his father, and, later, working at the Brenda Mine. By the time of his death in 2015, Martin and his wife Jessie were great-grandparents.

At the end of his long life Martin Shaw was the person who had lived in Peachland the longest. He was the last remaining Peachlander who had first-hand memories of Harry Hardy, the man who had arrived in the area in 1885, more than a decade before the community of Peachland was founded. Martin’s death thus deprived Peachland of a crucial link to its earliest days.
