May is Mental Health Awareness Month and as we have all seen through Covid time it is vital that we are all aware and conscious of how we are doing with our mental health and those around us. Too many folks have lost their lives to lack of mental health resources, care and acknowledgement. During Mental Health month, we at Peach Magazine want to make sure that we are doing whatever we can to help you (our loyal readers and LGBTQIA+ community) know where you can go to get assistance and what you can do to take care of yourself at home, work, or on the road. With the theme Back To Basics, Mental Health America has focused their efforts on providing assistance and guidance to those coming out isolation and quarantine and acknowledging the toll that Covid took on mental health in America.

STOP THE STIGMA May is Mental Health Awareness Month and as we have all seen through Covid time it is vital that we are all aware and conscious of how we are doing with our mental health and those around us. A little about Mental Health Month: Observed in May, Mental Health Month has been observed in the USA since it’s inception in 1949 by Mental Health America (then known as the National Association for Mental Health). Every year in Mid-March, Mental Health America releases a toolkit of resources for outreach activities during the month of observation. MHA and its affiliates conduct a number of activities based on a different theme each year. 2022’s theme is Back To Basics with the goal of providing “foundational knowledge about mental health […] and information about what people can do if mental health is the cause for concern”. A subsequent goal of the month in addition to knowledge about mental health is reducing and eliminating the stigma associated with mental illness.

HERE ARE SOME HELPFUL TIPS

Make Good Food Choices and Manage Good Nutrition: Not only does the quality of food that you eat affect your mental health, but the frequency, timing and amount of food that you eat can also affect it. Your stomach often communicates with your brain, so if you feed your belly the nutrients it needs, it can communicate clearly with your brain. Exercise, Even a Little: Staying active has more benefits than just getting you “in shape” for the summer season. Moving can help increase the firing rates of serotonin neurons and thus assist in creating those feel good vibes often described during “runners high” and post gym “pump”. Does not mean you have to work out at all hours on end… just 15 minutes 10 times a week! Navigate Your Sleep Schedule: Sleep is not just to make you feel “awake”. Sleep assists in you being able to learn new things, retain the knowledge, make memories, and other aspects of your life that you probably don’t even realize. Quality of sleep also matters… not just how many hours you get. So an hour before bed, put the phone down. Avoid watching TV. Disconnect from the world and allow yourself to focus on your sleep. Management…Stress Management: Being unable to manage your stress can lead to bodily harm and internal issues. If you are able to come up with a game plan on how to alleviate or lower your level of stress then you can cope with stress and effectively manage it. Take yoga techniques, meditation techniques, hobbies and other activities and add them to your “mental health toolbox”. Build A Support System: It might sound silly, but we gotta mention it. Your good Judys are the ones who are going to know when you’re feeling down… or maybe they wont. How can we effectively make sure that you are communicating with them and that they can help you when you really need it?

Long story short Peaches, we want you to be safe. We want you to know that you are loved, and that you matter. Go out of your way to tell ONE person that today and maybe they will pay it forward. It takes no time at all to be nice to someone, and it can add all the time in the world to their personal clock. You never know the difference you are making in someone’s life.

Dear Peach, I have a friend who is planning to move to Atlanta, and while I am incredibly excited for them to move here, I am also very nervous for them. It was difficult for me personally to acclimate to ATL. What advice should I give them for the big move?

Atlanta can be a tough city to get used to. It’s a major metropolitan area with temptation everywhere. This would be my advice to your friend: “Stay true to your morals and judgement. If you come to the city with the intention of trying to fit in, you might be some changes to who you are in order to impress others. However, if you’re confident in who you are, others will see that and naturally gravitate towards you. You should never have to compromise your character to impress others. If they expect you to, then they weren’t worth it in the first place.” I wish your friend the best and hope they acclimate well!
