Dear Peach, I am probably going to be single for Valentine's Day which really bothers me, yet again. It's been a pretty common occurrence for a few years now and I don't think I can keep doing this. While I am not a compulsive dater, I do wish I had someone to celebrate with despite the commercialism of the holiday. Any advice on how to get over it?

I think this is something that pretty much everyone deals with at one point or another while they are in the process of dating. Valentine's Day can be very triggering for a lot of people who endured many shitty relationships ranging from abuse to bad break ups. Here's what we suggest: Go to your favorite spot and enjoy a nice drink or meal by yourself. There is nothing wrong or shameful about going out on your own to enjoy some alone time. 2. Breathe. Not everyone has a partner so it makes perfect sense to feel left out, but there are a lot of people who are in the same boat as you. Do not think that you are alone in feeling the way you do. 3. Take a moment to realize the things that bring you joy and invest in something nice for yourself for the holiday. Get a massage, buy a bath bomb, get your favorite liquor for the night and NetflixN'Chill by yourself. 1.

The SuperStraight Super Bowl Is Queerer Than You Think by Mikey Rox

The NFL, like most professional sports leagues in America, is notorious for its lack of LGBTQ+ representation and infamous for its rampant internal homophobia, which the NFL itself denies but that gay former players have confirmed exists. We all know it anyway. Acceptance of homosexual and bisexual sports stars – even in hyper-masculine football – is becoming more commonplace, however, and if you need proof, just look at the Super Bowl. Queer people have been scoring big for visibility at the big game for the past few years, a trend that we hope continues at LVI on February 13 and well into the future. In the meantime, here are a few proverbial touchdowns for the queer community in NFL world championship history and beyond.

Washington Redskins tight end Jerry Smith (Super Bowl VII, 1972), New York Giants offensive lineman Roy Simmons (Super Bowl XVIII, 1983), Atlanta Falcons defensive lineman Esera Tuaolo (Super Bowl XXXIII, 1998), and New England Patriots offensive lineman Ryan O’Callaghan (Super Bowl XLII, 2007) have all competed for the coveted Vince Lombardi Trophy, albeit before coming out publicly post-NFL career. In total, 15 NFL-ers have come out as gay or bisexual after their league careers ended, and only one – Las Vegas Raiders defensive end Carl Nassib – has come out while active; he made history on Sept. 13, 2021, as the first openly gay player to appear in a regular season game in the NFL’s 101-year history.

Although the 2010s failed to produce a self-identified queer player who made a Super Bowl appearance, the previous four decades didn’t disappoint.

Fifteen years ago, Snickers aired a spot featuring two men ripping out their chest hair to prove how not queer they were after accidentally kissing while trying

Super Bowl ads are more Four known gay players have LGBTQ+ inclusive than ever appeared in Super Bowls past before

to eat a candy bar, and you can bet your ass hair that GLADD and the HRC had something to say about it. Fast forward to 2021, and those protests were exchanged for praise at the level of LGBTQ+ inclusivity during the year’s most-watched sportscast, with Super Bowl ads starring openly queer product promoters, including Lil Nas X, “Queer Eye”’s Jonathan Van Ness, drag queens Kim Chi and Miz Cracker, and YouTuber/latenight host Lilly Singh shilling everything from Pop-Tarts to pimple cream. How gay will the costliest commercials of the year get in 2022? Tune in to find out. Modern halftime shows are chock-full of queer artists In 1991, New Kids on the Block kicked off the pop-focused miniconcert halftime shows we enjoy today (prior to the ’90s, most Super Bowl halftime shows featured marching bands and a set list of musical standards performed by lounge acts), and one member, Jonathan Knight, identifies as gay, though he wasn’t out at age 22 when the group were “Hangin’ Tough” on the gridiron. Among a long list of other queer Super Bowl halftime milestones (like Lady Gaga’s entire performance in 2017) sexually fluid pop icon Katy Perry holds the record for the most-watched halftime show with an audience of 118.5 million viewers back in 2015, according to the Guinness Book of World Records.

Gay male cheerleaders broke ground in 2019 as the first to perform at a Super Bowl Openly gay cheerleaders Quinton Peron and Napoleon Jinnies joined the all-female L.A. Rams squad in 2018, and less than a year later they made history at Super Bowl LIII as the first gay men to represent their team at the biggest sporting event in the United States. Katie Sowers made Super Bowl history as the first openly gay and female coach American football coach Katie Sowers made history in 2017 as the first openly LGBTQ+ coach in the NFL, a distinction she’d double-down on in 2020 when, as offensive assistant for the San Francisco 49ers, she became the first female and openly gay coach in a Super Bowl. In 2021, Sowers joined the Kansas City Chiefs, which took her to the Super Bowl for a second time. A three-peat seems to be in her future as the Chiefs inch closer to another AFC West victory as of press time. Greensboro, NC, Devin Barrington-Ward is a talented young political strategist, government affairs expert, communications professional, and passionate HIV/AIDS advocate. His vision for the future is grounded in his lived experiences and personal identity as a Black Queer man of Caribbean descent growing beyond the traumas of youth homelessness and navigating Black love, friendships, and community in the midst of immense racial and social challenges and the potential for a better future. The oldest of four children, his family relocated to Georgia, where he attended Stephenson High School in Stone Mountain, Georgia, graduating in 2008. He found his passion for politics and advancing social justice causes at the age of 16 while in high school, where he served as an active member of the speech and debate teams, securing several local, state, and national awards for his skill in extemporaneous speaking, original oratory, policy debate, and in the student congress. In addition, Barrington-Ward served in leadership positions with Men of Distinction, Student Government Association, and the Young Political Leaders of America (YPLA), an organization he co-founded in his sophomore year. He garnered several feature stories in local newspapers, as well as summer jobs and internships with numerous elected officials, including Georgia State Representative Michelle Henson and Georgia State Representative and State House Minority Leader Stacey Abrams. After high school, while serving as a full-time political operative, Barrington-Ward participated in several leadership trainings, including the Congressional Black Caucus Political Boot Camp, the Young Black Gay Men’s Leadership Initiative, and the Victory Fund LGBT Candidate and Campaign Management Training Institute. After struggling with his sexual identity, It wasn’t until 2009 that while working with then Atlanta mayoral candidate Mary Norwood, Barrington-Ward began coming

out and accepting his bisexuality, crediting the inclusive environment created by Norwood and support from friends, including his former girlfriend. Since then, he has been an HIV and sexual health advocate, serving as a Health Equity Fellow for the National Coalition of STD Directors (NCSD) in Washington DC. He was a partner with the AIDS Vaccine Advocacy Coalition and Global Advocacy for HIV Prevention, and its Domestic Advocacy Program. Ward also teamed up with the Georgia Legislative Black Caucus (GLBC) to host a series of symposiums, summits, and legislative hearings to bring legislators and HIV prevention professionals together to discuss Georgia’s HIV epidemic. In 2011, he served as a founding member of the short-lived organization, Change Atlanta, which made its debut at the 15th Anniversary of Atlanta’s Black Gay Pride celebration. As a result of this work, Ward was appointed by the Presidents of Impulse Group United and AIDS Healthcare Foundation to serve as the first local chapter President of Impulse Group DC from 2015 to 2018. Under his leadership, the board of Impulse DC built a sex-positive, entertainment-based HIV advocacy organization rooted in racial equity. It centered on the experiences of Black and Brown LGBTQ communities and homeless youth disproportionately impacted by the epidemic, homophobia, transphobia, and racism. After his work in DC, he returned to Atlanta and launched a primary challenge against longtime state Sen. Horacena Tate in 2020 before COVID-19 began. Ward wanted to tackle gentrification, lack of affordable housing, and the lack of due process in the legal system in District 38. The district runs from Southwest Atlanta up into South Cobb. He criticized their lack of employment protections and affordable housing for LGBTQ people and low-income citizens living with HIV. Though he didn’t win the election, that did not stop this future Senator from advocating for Black & Brown people. He currently serves as the Founder & Managing Director of the Black Futurists Group, a social justice innovation firm using public policy, community organizing, media engagement, and political education as tools to build reimagined, equitable, and liberated Black futures in our lifetime.

Ellis Haizlip (September 17, 1929 – January 25, 1991) was a pioneering broadcaster, television host, theater and television producer, and cultural activist. Born in Washington, DC., he attended Howard University and graduated from there in 1954. While at Howard, Hazlip served as a producer for the Howard Players, the acclaimed performance art troupe of Howard University’s Department of Theatre Arts, during their summer season. After graduating, he left for New York City, where he began producing plays with Vinnette Carroll at the Harlem YMCA. One of their productions was “Dark of the Moon,” with Cicely Tyson, Clarence Williams III, Isabel Sanford, Calvin Lockhart, James Earl Jones, and the Alvin Ailey Dancers. Through the 1950ss, Ellis Hazlip produced concerts and performances in Europe and the Middle East. These included “Black New World” by dancer Donald McKayle; “The Amen Corner” by his friend James Baldwin; and “Black Nativity” by Langston Hughes. He also produced a concert tour by Marlene Dietrich. In 1972 and 1973, Haizlip and Lincoln Center produced “Soul at the Center,” an acclaimed 12-day Black expression festival through the performing arts. Other groundbreaking Haizlip productions were the first Congressional Black Caucus Dinner in 1970, “Welcome to the World Saxophone” in 1980, and “Watch Your Mouth!” in 1978 for WNET Channel 13, New York’s flagship Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) station, where he served from 1967 to 1981. Hazlip is best known as the host and producer of a unique and radically Afrocentric program for PBS simply called “Soul!” which ran from 1967 through 1973. As executive producer, Hazlip is credited with helping to advance the careers of singers Nicholas Ashford and Valerie Simpson, and Roberta Flack and Novella Nelson. “Soul!” was the brainchild of Haizlip, the first Black producer at WNET (then WNDT), who joined the station in the mid-1960s. Perhaps more than any other television show before—or since, “Soul!” insisted on representing the heterogeneity of Black culture.

It embraced cultural nationalists, Muslims, and feminists—occasionally on the same show. It flouted the conventional wisdom that ballet dancers and blues singers could not share a stage, let alone an audience. The show was also responsible for championing emerging acts. In an era when “being out” had yet to catch on, and previous to the Stonewall riots, which would catalyze the gay and lesbian liberation movement, Ellis Haizlip was a Black gay man and an important public figure in America’s Black cultural landscape. He was not “out” as we understand the concept today, and his presence was said to be “tolerated” by executives at Channel 13 who were uneasy with Haizlip’s presence and worried that a gay man wasn’t an appropriate or TV & THEATER PRODUCER, fitting on-camera embodiment of Black masculinity. PIONEERING BROADCASTER While not out to the general public, neither did he CULTURAL ACTIVIST shy away from gay community issues. For reasons unconnected with Haizlip’s sexuality, “Soul!” ran out of funding before he could be replaced, despite its popularity among audiences. In the 1980s, Ellis Hazlip was diagnosed with lung cancer and then a brain tumor; his friends, guests, and colleagues were devastated. A year before his death, there was a benefit to help pay his medical expenses, attended by Ashford and Simpson, Betty Shabazz and Roberta Flack, and dozens of other notables and close friends. He lost his battle against cancer at the age of 61 on January 25, 1991. His groundbreaking program “Soul!” were honored with a documentary and is directed by Samuel D. Pollard and Melissa Haizlip.

Laverne Cox was born on May 29, 1972 in Mobile, Alabama and raised with her twin brother M. Lamar by her grandmother and single mother Gloria. Cox grew up in the African Methodist Episcopal (A.M.E.) church, where she was an usher, in the youth group, and sang in the choir. In church, she also honed her public speaking skills. For Cox, church was an early introduction to life onstage. She is, and has always been, an artist, she says. It was around this time that Cox would enter what she has called “reparative therapy.” This came after her third grade teacher called her mother to warn, “Your son is going to end up in New Orleans wearing a dress if you don’t get him into therapy right away.” At this point, Cox knew who she was and this only made her feel ashamed. The bullying and shame led Cox to attempt suicide.

LAVERNE COX

AMERICAN ACTRESS TRANS ACTIVIST & TRAILBLAZER

Cox attended high school at the Alabama School of Fine Arts in Birmingham, where she studied creative writing. The school attracted students from all over the country. She eventually switched to a focus on dance during her junior year, which she’d been pursuing since she was 8. Cox went on to study at Indiana University in Bloomington for two years before transferring to Marymount Manhattan College in New York City, from which she graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in dance. She also studied acting in college. In 2008, Cox appeared on Law and Order: Special Victims Unit and appeared as a contestant on the reality series I Want to Work for Diddy. She went on to co-produce and co-host TRANSform Me, a reality makeover series that also made her the first Black trans woman to produce and star in her own television show. She continued to act in television and independent films before landing her big break in the series Orange is the New Black.

HISTORY & TRIBUTE SOURCES: National Black Justice Coalition, Wikipedia, History of Black Gay America Archives, and Various News Outlets.

For her work on Orange as Sophia Burset, an imprisoned trans woman, Cox was nominated for two Emmy Awards, making history as the first openly transgender person to be nominated in an acting category.

Also among the list of firsts, in June 2014, Cox became the first openly transgender person to be featured on the cover of Time magazine. In 2015, she won a Daytime Emmy Award in Outstanding Special Class Special as executive producer for Laverne Cox Presents: The T Word. The honor made her the first openly trans woman to win a Daytime Emmy as an executive producer. That same year, Cox achieved another milestone: the first openly transgender person to have a wax figure of herself at Madame Tussauds museum. In 2016, Cox was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from The New School in New York City for her progressive work in the fight for gender equality. Cox’ other film and television credits include The Mindy Project, Grandma, Free CeCe, Bored to Death, Musical Chairs, and the reboot of The Rocky Horror Picture Show: Let’s Do the Time Warp Again. In 2017, she became the first transgender person to play a trans series regular on broadcast television as attorney Cameron Wirth on CBS’s Doubt. While Cox’ work in all facets of entertainment continues to advance the field, it is important to highlight her executive production of the documentary Disclosure (2020), which offers “an in-depth look at Hollywood’s depiction of transgender people and the impact of those stories on transgender lives and American culture.” This film and the conversation it has invited have broken new ground.

“Sex is natural and an integral part of adult life,” says Byron Jamal, the former pastor turned Love Guru. “However, despite sharing it with lovers, partners, and even strangers, many of us feel uncomfortable discussing sex.” When Mr. Jamal recognized how his own sexual hang-ups were harming people around him and himself, he decided to dig deeper into its source. He confronted his sexual shame, the trauma from his past, and the stigma he was carrying, and decided to abandon conventional views on sex and sexuality and develop his own approach to sex. In HOW TO HEAL A HOE, the Love Guru combines the spiritual principles he preached as a pastor with the practical everyday techniques he uses today in his practice as a Love Guru. He coaches men and women — single, married, and of all sexual orientations — on how to overcome their perceived "hoe-ness." Programs that focus on sexual trauma healing can be exhausting and expensive. The Love Guru makes the process easier and even fun. In HOW TO HEAL A HOE, readers learn to unlock the self-healing powers they didn't know they had. Some of the topics include: Overcoming the stigma, shame and trauma of one’s past. Expanding the range of one’s emotional intimacy. Owning one’s journey through a self-healing approach. Transforming oneself into their best version. Ditching destructive sexual traits.

● ● ● ● ●

After completing Byron Jamal’s HOW TO HEAL A HOE, readers will be able to identify their sexual vulnerabilities, pain points and find their own path to healing. They will learn to love themselves, their bodies and their passions, as they are; as God created them to be. “Loving your inner hoe is the key to a healthy sexual love journey,” says the Love Guru.

"Atlanta-based author Byron Jamal AKA the Love Guru combines the spiritual principles he preached as an LGBTQ+ pastor with the practical everyday techniques he uses today in his live seminars and digital programs in his new book, HOW TO HEAL A HOE, . Releasing this Valentine’s Day, the book coaches gay men on how to ditch destructive sexual traits and learn to love themselves, their bodies and their passions, as they are; as God created them to be." -Project Publicity

Byron Jamal is the founder of the Extraordinary Love Academy and Beloved Community, which serves thousands of diverse men and women through live seminars and digital programs. As a bisexual love healer, Byron is able to aid all types of people regardless of their sexual orientation. He also serves as a love coach for singles and couples. He splits his time between teaching love and spiritual practices and spending time with friends and family.

While I don't agree that Black History Month is the shortest month of the year, I fully believe that Black Culture has influenced so many artists and movements today that they need to be praised in every way possible. As we know, there is still so much progress to be made towards equality let alone equity. So for the month we have two strong playlists coming. This week, trailblazers who worked to change the face of music forever by integrating their sound and culture into their music. Enjoy!
