Dear Peach, I recently tried to make a commitment to stop smoking but it has become incredibly hard. With COVID numbers surging and the stress of the new year I have become incredibly irritable which has caused me to pick up a few cigarettes here and there. I feel like I am failing at my resolution. What should I do? Give up

New Year's resolutions are probably some of the most forgotten and least followed through with promises around. Not because people intentionally want to forget about them and give up, but because they are unrealistic. When making a resolution, you are not particularly going to succeed if you set yourself up for a habit to give up for example. If you are going to make a resolution, you need to tell yourself that you are going to make a promise to "better yourself" first. If you change the way that you think about and approach resolutions and goals, then you will be more determined to follow through. I have the goal of losing weight, but I changed my approach to going to the gym as often as I can. If I have down time, I can go on a walk to help achieve my goal. I chose to focus on the path towards the goal as opposed to the final goal. If I follow the path, then the goal is achievable.

Cheap Ways to Get That Great Body Back by Mikey Rox

If you make New Year’s resolutions every January 1, chances are one of them was to work on your fitness. You were probably gungho about getting into shape for the first week or two, but you’ve likely broken that resolution by now. That happens, of course – we wouldn’t make the same resolutions every year if we could keep them – but there’s no time like the present to get back in the gym and start working on that beach-ready body again. And to help you stick to the routine this go-round, we’ve put together five frugal tips that you can institute to help keep you on track.

1. Shop Smarter and Plan Your Meals

2. Establish a Workout Schedule

One of the most important components of a new fitness regimen is a diet of healthy foods that are helping your efforts instead of hindering them. While we won’t tell you what foods you should eat – there are lots of opinions out there on what diet is best – we can recommend that you shop smarter for groceries and create a weekly meal plan to ensure that you’re eating responsibly. Shopping smarter means creating a list of only the healthy foods you need to stay fed and then sticking strictly to that list while you’re at the supermarket. To help keep your head in the game, never go to the supermarket hungry; shopping for groceries on a full stomach will help you avoid impulse buys (like junk food). When you have your ingredients, plan a weekly menu of breakfasts, lunches, and dinners. This may seem a very rigid way to live, but it will remove the guesswork out of what you’re going to eat each day, which is an excellent method of ensuring that you stick to the diet you’ve set for yourself.

Just like you put important work and life events on your calendar, you should also put your workout schedule on your calendar. It’s easy to let your commitment to fitness start lagging if you don’t have a definitive plan in place. A good way to combat that and stay on track is to set up a schedule of workouts on the same days and times every week when you know you can fit them in. 3. Find a Fitness Friend Having a buddy workout with you is beneficial in a few ways. First, your fitness friend will hold you accountable to the schedule you’ve set; on those days that you don’t want to workout, they can provide the motivation you need to get yourself in the gym. Second, a fitness friend will help you push yourself farther once you’re in the gym; when we work out alone, we often don’t push ourselves as hard as we can go – and when fatigue sets in, it’s easy to give up when nobody is there to root you on. Third, a fitness friend will be your spotter for more difficult workouts for which it’s ideal to have someone helping you – like lifting weights, for instance.

4. Participate in Workouts You Like

5. Plan Periodic Awards for Goals Reached

Working out doesn’t always mean that you have to do pushups and pull-ups for an hour every day. In fact, boredom caused by a stale routine is a leading factor in why a lot of people start slacking off on their fitness goals. To help keep the workouts fresh, attend group glasses at your gym if they’re offered, sign up for adult sports leagues in your area, and take your workout outside from timeto-time for a regular change of pace.

The ultimate goal of committing yourself to a healthy diet and regular fitness regimen is, without question, a healthier and betterlooking body. That’s a prize in itself, of course, but it doesn’t hurt to reward yourself along the way to stay motivated. Before you head back to the gym, set goals for yourself – whether it’s the amount of weight loss over a period of time or how many miles you’ve run in a month or another goal that you choose – it’s a good idea to put in place a goal to achieve periodically and a reward that you’ll treat yourself to once you reach it. Not only will you feel accomplished as you reach the goal, but you’ll also have something to show for it.

Move, I’m Gay, the podcast starring Francisco and Brendan (better known to listeners as Franny and Brenda) will premiere its 100th episode on Tuesday, February 22, 2022. Taped live each week from their studio in Portland, Oregon, the show has gained a national following for the comical camaraderie between its two seemingly polar-opposite hosts. While Franny dishes on the latest entertainment dirt, and maybe belts out a Top 40 hit or two, Brenda references obscure gay historical facts. There’s also a bit of politics thrown in, as the two banter, laugh and drink their way into listener’s hearts. “I had never been a fan of podcasts,” admits Francisco. “I have only listened to a couple and most of them have been true crime, so it’s interesting to find myself hosting a comedy show. Honestly, the real reason I’m here is I broke my leg and I needed something to do with my life.” The pair had only hung out with each other casually before starting the Move, I’m Gay podcast in February 2020. “We have very different personalities,” Brendan explains. “Francisco is up on trends and I’m slightly clueless to them, but we seem to mesh well in terms of our interaction and it's nice to have solidified our friendship through two years of weekly recordings.” The show’s segments are a favorite among listeners. In the “Gay of the Day” segment, they highlight some of the outstanding accomplishments of individuals in the LGBTQ+ community. “We love heaping praise on the bravery of celebs like Lil' Nas X and JoJo Siwa who have come out loud and proud and others like Jeopardy! champ Amy Schneider who are raising LGBTQ+ awareness on unexpected platforms,” says Francisco. “It’s also encouraging to be able to report on progressive legal news, especially the expanded rights being enjoyed by queer people all around the world,” Brendan adds.

But with the sugar comes the medicine. The pair regularly share their real-life trials and tribulations, like in the “Hog Hunters" episode when Brenda was forced to come to terms with the truth about the man he had been speaking with on Tinder. “I had to be convinced live during the episode that I was being catfished. All of the obvious signs were there but I simply wasn't willing to admit it.” In their “Bless This Mess” segment, Franny and Brenda lament on the week’s most shameful events. “Some of our most heated shows from last year were centered around transphobia and the right's increasingly unhinged fight against BLM and voter's rights, and their refusal to believe that we’re in the middle of a God damned global pandemic,” says Francisco. “In the beginning, we didn’t expect the Move, I’m Gay podcast to be so political,” he continues. “It was meant to be more about our shared love of the free Britney movement and detest for Gwyneth Paltrow’s Goop with maybe a few bits about Wendy Williams burping and farting simultaneously while live on air tossed in for good measure.” Both agree that being LGBTQ+ today is inherently political. “We realized pretty quickly that avoiding the serious topics would come across as tone deaf, and that’s the last thing we want the show to be,” Brendan explains. The podcast has been a learning experience for the pair. “I've found that my favorite shows are when we’re our real selves, imperfections and all,” says Francisco. Brendan agrees. “Being authentic seems to be working for us. Like the great Cheryl Lynn sang in her 1978 self-titled debut studio album, 'Got to Be Real'."

Don’t Be a B: How to avoid being a hateful bitch when discussing politics, drag race, and other pressing world issues By Scott King

I’m about to walk a very fine line. Attempt to teach you how not to be an asshole even when you’re right. Even when the other person is an evil Nazi so-and-so. Wish me luck. Conservatives like to complain that

Or

are

they

onto

something?

They are correct, of course, but only in the sense that everyone, regardless of politics or piety, is capable of bad behavior. And unhelpful attitudes. And self-righteousness. And being mean on the internet.

liberals are the “real” bullies. They talk about the “woke mob” and “PC fascists” and other cliché and hollow catchphrases. What a bunch bullshit. Right?

of

where it is misleading or postulates a false binary. I’m all about justice. And coherence. And minimizing hypocrisy. And not being or becoming the thing you deplore.

Regardless of our friendship status or your politics, I will correct your grammar on social media. I also will correct your meme or your grand political statement when it is illogical, inane, lacks internal coherence, is misleading, or lacks an in-depth application of critical thinking skills.

You get frustrated when people are stupid. Or don’t make sense. Or are mean and hateful.

I am that guy. But I don’t bully you when I do it. I just point out that your meme, while potentially on point with my politics, does not make any sense,

Even

So don’t be that. Don’t be the ignorant hatred that you see in others. Don’t be the impatient condescending Karen that you see in others. when

you’re

right.

It’s all about not being the bad guy when accusing someone else of being

the bad guy. And moderating your tone when you’re accusing someone of being the bad guy or, hopefully, just a guy with bad behavior. Very few people are bad guys. Most people are capable of both good and ill. So when people are leaning into the ill, my first approach is to elevate them. Elevate and correct. After that, it’s kind of up to them. When they get defensive or are hateful back, that’s on them. What you put out is under your control. What they put out is under theirs. It’s a paradox, and it’s human nature. The other side of human nature is striving to be better. I don’t know how many people actually cultivate this in themselves.

way she looked and dressed. If anyone, regardless of political orientation had done this to Hillary Clinton or a prominent female liberal political figure, the Lefties would have been incensed. But no, because Kellyanne was a liar and a charlatan and the advocate for a pretty-close-to-evil man, all this bad behavior was somehow justified in people’s minds and fingers. I was having none of this. But instead of flaming people on their own pages, I made my own post about no no no, people let’s not do this. Let’s be better than this. Don’t attack women for the way they look, regardless of their politics or behavior. If you need to vent, have it be for their politics and

That’s

why

I’m

always

vigilant.

I do the same thing with bullying and bad behavior. Characterizing someone as evil or stupid or psychopathic just because their politics or way of looking at current events is different than yours is a very tricky situation. In your dislike for others, don’t become a different version of the thing you hate. So we start with the premise that they are not a bad or evil or intellectually deficient person. They’ve just been lead down the wrong path. This never leads me to pity. But it does lead me to vigilance and course correction. Hateful attitudes towards Kellyanne Conway on Inauguration Day 2017 really upset me. It was all about the

behavior. Not their looks. Such attacks are, as I’m sure you have said over and over again about Hillary Clinton, sexist and trite. Don’t be cheap. Don’t be mean. Don’t be petty. Don’t be the thing you advocate against. That’s pretty much it. empathy. Can you

Radical dig?

Don’t be a B. Be a flower that attracts the bee. Pollination, after all, makes the world go ’round.
