Anti-Trans Bills Gain Oxygen

Yet the recent history of the nation suggests that bills such as this need to be dragged out of the caves and blinded by the right amount of light before being scrubbed with bleach.

This bill, if it becomes Florida law, would require transgender high school and college students to compete in sports based on their birth gender. Once museums open up, especially in D.C., I‘ll return to the galleries. Guards never bother me and museums tend to attract a certain amount of odd—maybe I should say distinct— couples.

You typically approach strangers in public at the start of your portraits. What are your best ice breakers?

What were your experiences like working with members of the LGBTQ+ community?

I’m very straight forward. I approach people with “can I ask you a favor? I’m an artist and I do watercolor portraits of couples.” I show them a finished painting on my phone or an 8 by 11 glossy if I have one with me. I assure them that I‘ll only need two or three shots and can photograph them right where they are. Then I hand agreeable couples my business card so they can request a copy of the photos.

Once they model for me, I ask for their first names so I can use them as a title.

I’ve only once gone to a club to look for LGBTQ’ers, and only convinced one couple, Agni and Eli, to pose for me. Best luck I had was to visit where marchers were assembling for a Pride parade. Oftentimes, members of the community think of their public selves as a performance, which makes for easy modeling.

What qualifies as an interesting subject?

The couples need some idiosyncratic feature—maybe dress, maybe attitude, maybe distinct bond as a couple—that makes them stand out. I do observe couples a while before I approach them. I also look for a certain demographic if I feel my series is weak in some place.

Once I got comfortable wearing a mask, I sought mask wearers. I owed it to my muse to represent the world of COVID. And I call this subset of “2 by 2” paintings: Pandemic Pairs. The first of these won a major award at the National Watercolor Society’s 2020 international online exhibition and made the cover of the October issue of [Fine Art Connoisseur Magazine].

Was there a demographic you felt was particularly underrepresented in your work?

Since you operated during a major election year, were you able to deduce political leanings from your portraits?

I had trouble getting Spanish speaking folks to agree to be models. I attribute that to fears of ICE agents. Also, Asian couples tended to say no maybe from a certain cultural modesty.

I felt bad that I never attended a Black Lives Matter rally last year but was leery of close-knit crowds. And rightwingers were a bit scarce in Baltimore to seek them out.

The closest I ever got to the other side of the political spectrum was in 2019 when I roamed the streets outside the Baltimore Ravens stadium. None of what appeared to be good-old-boys would model for me. As soon as I said I was an artist, the alarm bells went off in their heads and they would grunt a no! Oddly enough, I did get models that day: two pairs of mothers and daughters to my surprise.

Do you foresee new challenges to documenting a diverse pool of subjects now?

I just need to take myself to where a certain group can be found. For instance, I should visit orthodox Jewish neighborhoods on Saturday mornings.

Any favorite spots that continue to turn up interesting subjects?

I’ve relied too often on a year-round farmers market.

The buyers are racially diverse but too many are academics or professional types. On the plus side, they tend to agree to model.

At what point did you decide to inject the element of face masks?

Will you be focusing more closely on capturing LGBTQ+ persons in upcoming works?

Because Key West is justly known as being LGBTQ+ friendly, I exhibited all eight paintings from the “2 by 2” series that clearly presented LGBTQ+ couples. But to date, I’ve done 60 paintings in the series. Those eight are less than 14% of the total. Then again, not all LGBTQ+ couples or pairs of friends advertise themselves as such by their appearances or actions. I’ve been partnered and married to the same guy for a total of 43 years, but we don’t necessarily present ourselves as gay—just old middle class white guys. That said, I probably will not focus on the LGBTQ+ in upcoming works.

Do you predict any radical changes to the ‘portrait’ segment of the art market post-pandemic?

Interesting question, but I’m not the best person to ask because I’m not so much a portraitist as an ethnographer—my B.A. in anthropology showing through. I do portraits of America, two at a time.

Doing portrait commissions would be problematic. I work best when the subjects don’t know they’re being observed.

Then when they pose for me, I seek out the qualities of their ‘couple-ness’ that attracted me to them. Portrait seekers would be harder to observe candidly.

ACCOUNTABILITY VS. JUSTICE This week, a jury announced the verdict in the Derek Chauvin case in Minneapolis, MN. In case you missed the loop on this one, Derek Chauvin (a former Minneapolis police officer) arrested and aggressively pinned George Floyd to the ground in broad daylight with his knee to the neck for 8 minutes and 46 seconds. The neck restraint that Chauvin used in the arrest was legally permissible by the Minneapolis Police Department. Many issues surrounded the arrest, including the fact that once Floyd was in handcuffs, he was supposed to be rotated onto his side to Derek Chauvin escorted from the avoid potential death.

Now, this week marks a historic ruling where Derek Chauvin was found guilty on all three charges brought against him in court.

While the country anxiously awaited the verdict on Tuesday April 20, 2021 businesses and residents of Minneapolis prepared for the worst: Riots and protests that would, once again, destroy local businesses. Even here in Atlanta, where protests were abundant during COVID-19, people prepared for the worst.

Businesses lost faith in the judicial system.

The country lost faith in the judicial system. Following a repeat of the anxiety and anger felt around the country last year at the height of the George Floyd protests, many say that this was not justice for Mr. Floyd but rather accountability in action.

But what does justice look like? How can we progress forward, learn and honor his death, and institute changes in the system that so often demonizes and degrades POC in this country? Because amid this trial, another man in Minneapolis (Daunte Wright) was shot and killed during a traffic stop after officers realized he had an outstanding warrant.

So, how do we as a nation move forward in a way that finally holds up and recognizes the injustices against our fellow citizens of color? How do we continue to fight for what’s right and stop the killings of young men and women at the hands of police brutality?

How can we begin to reshape our thinking, our country’s police training, and our everyday vernacular to mitigate the stereotypes and negative portrayals that so often fuel racism in America?

We have to begin by listening to those in the communities who have insight from their experience. We must allow those members of society to sit at the table and educate us about their experiences. And while it is not their responsibility to teach non-POCs how to be good people, we can learn from their stories. We can learn from the history of the Black experience in America dating back centuries.

We have to continue to fight for justice, not just accountability, even if accountability is the first step.

Dear Peach, I’ve been feeling in a rut lately because of my weight and my lack of motivation to workout during Covid. I still don’t feel totally comfortable going to the gym and I have gained a lot of weight. I feel sluggish and slow, and I feel as though I am going through a depression that I have never felt before.

Any advice on how to re-motivate myself to get back into the gym or find an alternative to get moving again?

There are a lot of people in your same boat, so don’t stress about it too much. Since Covid started, there have been a lot of people anxious about working out in gyms, but there are alternatives here in town!

Piedmont Park is a great way to get some walking in and stay active!

Find a local park close to you as well and see if they have any outdoor workout areas. A ton of my friends bought resistance bands online for cheap and started doing at-home workouts as well. As far as depression goes, you’re probably lacking the endorphins you got from working out, so any sort of movement will probably help. Maybe try yoga and see what the meditative aspect can do for your well-being!
