Julia Scotti IS Funny that Way
The indie documentary about the trans comedian, Julia Scotti, is the real-life story about living your authentic truth and a story about how the journey to self-discovery never really ends. A moving, extremely personal, and yes, funny film about a triumphant comeback as the “crazy old lady of comedy.”
In the comedy boom of the late 1980s, Rick Scotti was a busy guy—working clubs across the country when he came to the deadly realization that nothing felt right. When the words gender dysphoria and gender reassignment surgery were rarely heard, Rick’s awakening at age forty-seven led to a year of hormonal treatments, surgery, and a new identity as Julia Scotti. She reinvented herself, spent a decade teaching, and then stepped on stage several years ago and began the journey back to the world she loves. The film tracks Julia’s triumphant comeback, the rough life on the comedy circuit, and her children’s return, as comedy becomes a shared language of identity, healing, and joy.

Not a Mask in Sight
Hey you! How’s quarantine? I’m trying to keep sane being cooped up in my 1.2-million-acre mansion in Beverly Hills. It feels strange only to have four pools to choose from when I want to take a swim. I can’t even visit my favorite salons, restaurants, bathhouses, or even those national park glory holes! I think we can all agree that it sucks living through a viral outbreak. I finally see what upset Milla Jovovich so much in “Resident Evil.”
What upsets me during this time is how many douche bags I see walking around without masks on. I know what you’re thinking: the people who don’t wear masks will luckily die and leave the world a smarter place. And I think you’re probably right. But they will most likely take innocent people with them. And what I find weird is there are SO MANY fantastic mask options just waiting to be shown off, I don’t understand why aren’t more people taking this opportunity. I decided to video chat with some of my favorite squirrel friends to find out what the hottest mask fashions are available to get more people into wearing them.
Edith Pooh is a celebrated TikTok fashion designer and started her own line of upscale coverups. Edith explains what sets her masks apart is that they’re not ugly. Her collection ranges from holographic rainbow fabrics to rhinestone Henna prints. If you want to be safe, fabulous, and let the world know, you’re probably cursing them underneath your mask, this line is absolutely for you! Edith also noted that she’s surprised she isn’t seeing more of her brand around in the city. “Studies show that people appear prettier when they cover their ugly faces. So why don’t they do that? It makes no sense,” Edith exclaims as she inhales a long toke of her Virginia Slims
Her research is pretty hard to argue with. And while her masks run a slightly high price of $150, I swear by them! Another dear friend of mine, Miguel Morningside, resident trophy boy and self-proclaimed founder of the Morningside Park in Atlanta, loves using masks for catfishing. He explains that with so many varieties of patterns, colors, and shapes, you could potentially catfish the same person indefinitely! Why you would want to catfish someone is entirely up to you, but the thrill is such fun. Seeing how easy it is to catfish people during this pandemic leaves Miguel confused as to why more people aren’t wearing masks. Miguel has been taking lots of time to figure out why so few people are wearing masks since it takes less time to put a mask on than your shoes.
The confusion Edith and Miguel share towards the lack of mask-wearing led me to my good friend, and legally deaf French horn prodigy, Natalia Keller. Natalia travels the world for her concerts and to inspire people to pursue dreams that seem impossible to achieve. In her travels, she noticed how many countries (like Japan and Korea) wear masks out of courtesy. Once the pandemic started, it baffled her how many nations took to common sense and wore masks, while the United States became a parody of itself. Natalia uses people’s mouths to understand better what they’re trying to say when they can’t speak sign language and has designed see-through masks made of plastic. She hopes people are less scared of masks if they are able to wear one that doesn’t conceal their lips. But she feels we as a nation are too incapable of common sense to wear masks during a viral outbreak pandemic.
I love the innovation my friends have made to make masks more practical and fashionable. But I’m afraid the people who aren’t wearing masks already are too stupid to change. If these inspiring individuals convinced you to start wearing a mask, I am thrilled! They’re great, safe, affordable, and literally should be made into a law. Be safe, and I hope to see more masks worn outside.

Mitzi Pennington is the self-proclaimed sex symbol and advice-giving-guru alter ego of Mirza Muftic. She came from humble roots of middle America and married into money shorly after dropping out of college. JJ Bozeman grew up in Augusta, GA, the son of a U.S. Navy Dad and an immigrant mother. He first moved to NYC in his junior year in high school but left a year after graduation to pursue a relationship in Wilmington, North Carolina. When it ended, he returned north to pursue an acting career, moving into a Bronx apartment with a female model he had never met. It was a total leap of faith and desperation, but it worked out, and he still lives with her, except now they call Brooklyn home.
Life as a young, gay, Filipino actor in New York has been challenging, but Bozeman has found success on stage, starring in in Haleh Roshan’s FREE FREE FREE FREE and in readings of plays by Filipinx playwrights Megan Tabaque and Alton Alburo.
This month, he makes the jump to movies, starring in Jack Tracy’s acclaimed LGBTQ political thriller, Snowflake, a fictional story that depicts the fear of a nation when a Trump-like politician is suddenly thrust into the White House.
At the center is Bozeman’s character Ethan, whose increasing panic of the new administration drives the film. When happenstance puts Ethan in the same room as the Vice President, he is forced to choose the best way to protect his friends and the LGBTQ community. We spoke with JJ Bozeman from his Brooklyn home.
Hi J.J., pleasure to speak with you! How are you coping through the pandemic?
I’m taking it day-by-day in this bizarre time we live in. A lot of my focus has been on supporting Black Lives Matter and staying healthy.
With theatres closed, are you keeping yourself busy?
I’ve been teaching myself editing, lighting, and sound, working on a project I shot with friends right before the quarantine.

Is Snowflake your first lead role in a film? Yes, it is!
How did you land the role of Ethan?
I auditioned to be in Jack Tracy’s web series, History, back in 2017. I didn’t get the part, but he kept me in mind for other roles. He also offered me the opportunity to work behind the scenes, and I jumped at it to learn about being on that side of the camera. It gave us time to get to know each other, and he says he wrote the part of Ethan with me in mind.
Could you relate with Ethan and the paranoia he feels after his worst nightmare is elected President?
Absolutely. The election in 2016 really horrified me, and so working on a project that directly confronts those fears was both cathartic and taxing, because it felt close to home. There was safety in making a movie because it is pretend, but the story comes from current events, and that’s not pretend.
Of everyone in Ethan’s circle (Ryan, Paul, Owen…), who do you identify with most? I’m becoming Paul, the older character, who was an ACT UP activist. The current political climate and battle against racism is shaping me as a person.
Without giving anything away, what are your thoughts on Ethan and how he handles his panic?
Ethan is emotional and intellectual. In moments that feel so uncertain, you don’t know if your fear or your rational mind are going to drive the ship. I think Ethan is deeply human in his struggle. I have sympathy for how he handles things because he’s in such an intense position.
Why should everyone see Snowflake before November?
Because we have a demagogue as president. He discredits any journalist that isn’t applauding him. He doesn’t believe in science. He doesn’t care about the working class. There are still children in cages. Millions of people have lost healthcare in the middle of a pandemic. I don’t think I’ve even covered the tip of the iceberg. Every week we have something new to worry about. Not all of these issues are explored in “Snowflake”, but the film is a reminder of how important elections are for everyone in our country. Get ready to vote, people!

Parker is new to Atlanta’s Midtown from Las Vegas, and he describes himself as a giant chameleon and a unicorn at the same time. He is a licensed cosmetologist specializing in hair color, extensions, and styling, but he also has a career in adult entertainment and nightlife. He thrives when being creative, working on a new project or event, or bringing smiles to the faces around him. The City Beneath the Lake

These are my personal observations, research, and experiences.
The very foundation of America stands on misrepresentations and down-right lies about American history, especially history associated with the plight of Blacks and acts of racism in America. One must ask, why? What are the skeletons hiding beneath the surface of American history? Why are the authors of American history not telling the truth? Such is the history of Lake Lanier.
Just a very short 42 miles north of Atlanta beneath a lake, lies the truth of a small village called Oscarville, Georgia. It was a thriving village that was predominantly Black-owned. Why is a village beneath a lake, you ask? Welp, 108 years ago, an incident changed the lives of 1,098 Black families forever.
There were two known events that occurred, which changed the history of Oscarville forever.
Two weeks prior, Ellen Grice, another white woman, was allegedly raped by a Black man. An angry militia hung him without any due process, investigations, or a proper trial. This and many others have lost their lives far too many times for crimes that they never committed. As the mob grew increasingly more violent, they ran off, chased down, and hunted 1,098 black residents from their homes, businesses, barns, and churches. In an attempt to keep the county segregated. Forsyth County continues to be recognized as one of the most racist places in the country, in my opinion.
After the rape and beating of Mae Crow, an 18-yearold white woman, September 8, 1912, an angry mob was formed and began tormenting the Black residents of Forsyth County, Georgia. Some reports stated that the beating was so brutal that her eye was dislodged from her skull. After her death on September 23. the angry mob began burning Black-owned churches, houses, and businesses. The local papers said that she was beaten and died of her injuries. The two Black men who were accused of her death were on trial for a day and hung outside of the town. The media mentioned that over 5,000 spectators watched as their lifeless bodies hang swinging in the Georgia breeze. They also depicted these men as low brow gorilla-like Negroes.
It has also been noted that the grandniece of May Crow (Debbie Vermat) thought that her assailants were completely innocent based on her grandmother’s account of the incident.
After this “ethnic cleansing” was complete to the satisfaction of White locals, Lake Lanier, a manmade lake, was created. Lake Lanier was forced upon the land of those affluent selfsufficient blacks. The Buford Dam was also created and flooded in order to cover up the hidden horror of the county’s past. There seemed to be very little punishment for racial injustice, egregious to some but appalling to most, in Forsyth County. Wikipedia and other news sources made mention that Lake Lanier was flooded to ensure that Georgia was always replenished with a strong water source and to support hydroelectric power for the city of Atlanta. Even in 1956, people continued to lie about the facts of this “creative coverup”.
White residents even went to the extreme of raising the level of the lake high enough to cover the trees. Later they came around frequently during the process to cut off the tops of the trees. Some of the stumps from the trees are there even today.
As restless souls roam beneath the surface of a very popular landmark, I can’t help but wonder if their souls will ever truly rest. As unbelievable as this event may seem, there are still graves below of the once established town.
In 2007, a major drought revealed the motor speedway that was a famous structure in the village of Oscarville, Georgia. This is proof substantiating the stories of the famous speedway. Other reporters have called it “A haunted memory”; how ironic.
Even in 1987 as Forsyth County still remained segregated, Coretta Scott King, Hosea Williams, Dick Gregory, Andrew Young, Jesse Jackson, John Lewis and many others attempted to protest peacefully and were met by similar treatment of the town’s past. The Ku Klux Klan was present as well as 2,300 National Guard soldiers to keep the peace. 55 arrests were made including Ku Klux Klan leader David Dukes.” Ni**ers, go home!” and “white power” bellowed the Georgia air. Why should obtaining peace come at such a painful cost?
Some say the curse of Oscarville will never be lifted until the deaths that are buried beneath that lake can be vindicated. Far too many times we’ve seen the story play out like a bad movie ending with an even more grimacing sequel.
There is a doomed history that surrounds all atrocities associated with oppression and racism. Reference the old saying, “Every dog has his day....”
The city beneath the lake may be forgotten to some or even looked over, but the soil around it knows it’s truth. One day those businesses, churches, crops, and fruit trees that were once planted in the backyard of its native-locals will bare the true fruit of the original owners.

During this COVID pandemic, I have had to get creative because I have been sensible enough not to meet and hook up with guys. I met a guy through a dating app just before Covid hit, and we really hit it off. During our individual isolation, we have seen each other a couple of times – we can drive to each other, and we have both been really good at isolating and staying safe, so we could spend time together. So, now I’m not so sure what to think of it all. If he’s practically planning a future with me, why is he still active on this app? Am I overthinking it? Should I bring it up?

There is nothing wrong with making a great connection and moving kinda fast. But you need to ask yourself (and him!) a lot of those questions you would otherwise get the answer to if you spent more time dating and getting to know each other. Maybe he is keeping all of his options open? Perhaps he realized he was too forward with you? Maybe you read too much into what he said? Maybe he does not understand how what he is saying is making you feel? You have every right to ask him about this – and it doesn’t have to be direct either, you can simply say something like ‘I still get notifications from this app even though I’m off it. How about you?’ That can lead to a conversation about online presence and potential boundaries in your relationship. It is obvious communication is vital here, since there are already some things that are not disclosed openly between the two of you. If you want to call him out in a more undercover way, create a fake profile, and approach him online; that’ll tell you immediately if he really is playing you. But be prepared for the consequences of this one, because it is not exactly conducive to an open and honest relationship, to begin with.
