Born to Be MALDITO
By Mikkel Hyldebrandt
Some brands are created to fill a gap in the market. Others are created because their founders have something to say. MALDITO falls firmly into the latter camp. Born in Atlanta and rooted in queer identity, MALDITO takes a word associated with being damned, cursed, or outside the norm and turns it into a declaration of individuality. With unapologetic streetwear and a philosophy centered on refusing the mold, the brand is as much about what you stand for as what you put on your body. DAVID sat down with founders Wes and Jordi of MALDITO to talk about where it all began, why queerness was always meant to be at the heart of the brand, and what happens when being different stops being something to hide—and becomes something to celebrate. enough for us. Wes: Yeah, as we worked through the meaning of the name and what our brand would be about, we started discovering all of these additional layers. Things we wanted to say. What story we wanted to tell. It became about rebellion. Coming to terms with who you are and accepting yourself. Living boldly in your truth - no matter who you are. MALDITO describes itself as being for “the ones who refuse the mold.” What experiences in your own lives made you feel there needed to be a brand—and maybe even a movement—built around that idea? Wes: Jordi and I have both had different roads to get to where we are, but one thing that´s consistent is that we´ve both had to fight to find self-love and self-acceptance. I grew up in a very conservative small town and had to work through a million versions of who I thought I had to be to get to where I am now. And that’s what this really is all about, isn’t it? Learning to love ourselves enough to reject the box that people try to put us in. Let’s start with the name, because MALDITO definitely makes a statement. Where did it come from, and what did reclaiming that word mean to you personally?
Jordi: My story is similar. Growing up in Latino culture there’s a lot of Machismo where you´ŕe not allowed to act a certain way, speak a certain way, or even feel a certain way. And this brand is meant to start a movement to break that way of thinking. We want to inspire others to refuse the mold people have tried to put them in.
Jordi: It´s funny you ask that, because the answer to that question has evolved. I’m Mexican and growing up you´d hear Maldito a lot in telenovelas. It would usually be aimed at bad guys. Initially our There are plenty of fashion brands plan was to evoke this bad boy image that market to LGBTQ+ people, but with the brand so we thought Maldito MALDITO feels intentionally queer rather was the perfect name. But that meaning than simply queer-friendly. Why was it alone wasn´t queer enough or bold important for that identity to be at the
is that nobody’s asking you to explain yourself. That´s the thing Atlanta does better than most places. You call each drop a “chapter,” which suggests MALDITO is telling a larger story. What story are you ultimately hoping to tell, and where do you want to take the movement from here?
core of the brand from day one? Wes: You´ve seen the large brands that seem to treat their pride collections as an afterthought every year. You can tell nobody queer was in the room. We wanted to build something that celebrates queer bodies the way we think they should be celebrated. Two queer people at the helm, real feedback from the community, and quality materials. This isn’t just some collection we add on. This is who we are. The brand talks about identity as a statement and truth as an act of rebellion. What do you want someone to feel when they put on MALDITO— not just about the clothes, but about themselves? Jordi: Honestly? We want them to feel a little harder to ignore. Streetwear has always been about self-expression, so putting on MALDITO is a choice you´re making out loud. And wherever you are, even if you´re the only one in the room, you’re part of something. That´s the part that matters to us. We want people to walk out the door with their head up. You chose to build MALDITO in Atlanta. How has the city—and especially its queer community, nightlife, creativity, and culture—influenced what the brand is becoming? Wes: Atlanta earned a name during the civil rights movement as the city ´Too Busy To Hate´, and Black organizers built that. Queer southerners have been coming here for decades looking for a version of the same thing. You grow up somewhere small, you hear there’s a city a few hours away where you can actually be yourself, and you come. That´s how a lot of us got here. And the culture here is a melting pot. People come from everywhere, and what holds it together
Jordi: We can’t give everything away just yet. But what we will say is that each drop has its own corresponding short film, and those films are part of one bigger continuous story. As it goes on, you´ll see the brand evolve with it. The man currently at the center of these films is someone who hasn’t accepted himself yet. The world he’s in is narrow because he´s narrow. That changes. We also want the story to honor the people who came before us. Lesbians during the AIDS crisis. Trans women at Stonewall. They were fighting for all of us before a lot of us existed. So if you don’t see yourself reflected in the story just yet, we hope you´ll stick with us. The story isn´t finished. Finally, how can we access MALDITO? And please let us know where to follow and like, so we can get updated on upcoming drops! Jordi: Everything´s at shopmaldito.com, and that’s also where you can get on our email list. Drop 002 is coming, and the list is how you´ll hear first. We´re @ malditostvdios on Instagram and TikTok, and we´ll start teasing what´s next there soon.¨ - Jordi Since you mentioned it, when is the next drop? Wes: We haven’t locked a date yet. What I can tell you is that it´s called TENTACIÓN, and it´s the next chapter of the film. If you want to know first, get on the list at shopmaldito.com.

30 Years of Queer Commemorating the three-decade anniversary of my coming out. By Scott King I came out in 1996. Thirty years ago. Your Body Is Not Built for This By Dr. Zachary LaVigne, Any Spine Chiropractic & Massage Studio You wake to an alarm, check your phone before your feet hit the floor, sit in traffic, sit at work, eat from a wrapper, and end the day under bright lights while answering one last email. That is a normal Tuesday. It is also a strange habitat for a body shaped over roughly 300,000 years. Your body is not defective because it gets stiff, tired, anxious, hungry at inconvenient times, or suspiciously awake at 10:30 p.m. It is ancient equipment doing its best in a very new environment. A Very Old Body For most of human history, life came with builtin instructions. Daylight meant move. Darkness meant rest. Food took effort, changed with the seasons, and was not engineered to vanish halfway through a television show. Social life involved faces, voices, touch, shared work, and the occasional disagreement without a comment section. Our biology adapted to variety. We walked, climbed, carried, squatted, reached, rested, got cold, got hot, and solved practical problems with our whole bodies. Modern life is exceptionally good at removing that friction. Groceries arrive at the door. Thermostats erase weather. Cars eliminate walking. One glowing rectangle supplies work, entertainment, romance, outrage, and enough targeted ads to convince you a better water bottle might change everything. Convenient? Absolutely. Biologically neutral? Not quite. Evolutionary mismatch is the gap between the world that shaped us and the one we built. It does not mean civilization is a mistake, or that we need to forage behind the Kroger. It means our bodies continue to respond to old signals, even when they come from a laptop, a drivethru, or an inbox that reproduces overnight. The Indoor Animal Consider light. Morning sunlight once told the brain, clearly, that the day had begun. Darkness said something equally useful: wrap it up, the repair crew is on shift. Now many of us spend the day under weak indoor lighting, then flood our eyes with screens and LEDs at night. Your body does not know you are “just checking one thing.” It knows light. When day and night start looking alike, sleep gets weird, energy gets erratic, and morning can feel like a
personal insult. Movement gets the same treatment. Humans were not designed to exercise for 45 minutes and stay folded into a chair for the rest of their waking hours. Joints, muscles, circulation, and the nervous system expect regular changes in position. This does not mean every ache comes from sitting, or that a standing desk is salvation in walnut veneer. It means the body usually does better with variety than stillness. Comfort Has a Cost Modern life keeps us climate-controlled, constantly fed, and rarely bored for more than three seconds. These are not moral failures. Atlanta air conditioning is a public service in July. But when every discomfort disappears, so do some useful inputs: walking somewhere, feeling genuine hunger, spending time outdoors, tolerating a little weather, or sitting quietly without being handed another emergency-shaped notification. The goal is not Paleo cosplay. You do not need a spear, a cave, or a passionate opinion about barefoot shoes. Give your body regular reminders of the world it recognizes. Get outside early. Walk after meals. Change positions often. Lift, carry, and squat in ways appropriate for your body. Eat meals that look more like food than product development. Let nighttime become a little darker and quieter. Your body is not asking you to live in the Stone Age. It is asking for enough movement, daylight, rest, real food, and human connection to remember w
