UNIFORM Your Guide
At Peace Lutheran College, students in Years P–12 are required to wear the College uniform both while at school and when travelling to and from the College. Our uniform is an important part of who we are as a community.
Peace Lutheran College (PLC) regards appearance and uniform dress standards of students as an important philosophy of the college. It is recognised through research that a high level of personal appearance and uniform presentation helps minimise disruptive behaviour, promotes equality with peers through respect of oneself and others, builds self-pride, and is helpful in maintaining academic standards.
The uniform supports equity and affordability for families, providing a practical and respectful standard for all. There are also safety considerations involved for students when working in classrooms, labs, technology spaces, kitchens and in sporting competitions and activities.
Uniform Expectations
All uniform items are to be worn neatly as per the examples demonstrated in this booklet.
Peace Lutheran College has a formal uniform that is worn throughout the year. Climate-appropriate fabric has been carefully selected to ensure comfort during both the wet and dry seasons in Cairns. The formal shirts for all students have been designed to be worn untucked, allowing for ease of movement and suitability for our tropical environment A variety of bottomhalf options are available to support comfort and practicality.
The formal uniform is to be worn each day in accordance with the College timetable, and students will transition to their House/Sport uniform on designated sport or practical lesson days as advised.
We ask that parents, caregivers and students refer to pages 10-15 of this booklet and familiarise themselves with the College’s Personal Appearance Guidelines
Please refer to this guide to ensure the items you purchase are approved for your child’s year level, as some uniform items are specific to either Primary or Secondary students
This Uniform Guide is a living document and will continue to be updated throughout the phased introduction of the new College uniform. Implementation begins in January 2026, with full adoption expected by the first day of Term 1, January 2028. All students will be required to wear the new uniform exclusively from this date.

Formal Black Leather School Shoes
Students are required to wear traditional formal black leather school shoes. These must be made entirely of smooth, polishable black leather (including the toe and sides), with a low heel and a structured, supportive design. The shoe should resemble a classic school or businessstyle shoe not a sports shoe with minimal stitching and no visible logos, coloured accents, mesh panels, air bubbles, or decorative features. Shoes must be fully black, including the sole and laces (if applicable).
Black leather “sneakers” or “trainers” commonly sold in school shoe sections of sports stores (e.g. athletic-style shoes with cushioned soles, sporty shaping, visible branding, textured or rubberised toe caps) are not permitted, even if they are all black in colour. The overall appearance must be formal rather than athletic.

While the ‘uniform tranistion’ period is in place, current shoes can be worn if recently purchased. We ask that these guidelines are followed upon your next shoe purchase on or before the new uniform compliance date of January 2028.

Specific Need & Non-Compulsory Items
Kindergarten 2026 (Prep from 2027)
2026 Peace Kindergarten students may wear the PLC Sport Shorts and the Kindy/Prep Polo Shirt as part of their daily uniform. For those continuing into Prep in 2027, this same polo may also be worn throughout their Prep year, alongside the Formal Uniform and the Sport/House Uniform.
Please note: From Year 1 onwards, the Kindy/Prep Polo is no longer part of the school uniform.
Year 12 Jerseys and Polos
Students in Year 12 can wear their College approved graduation year polo shirt and jersey as directed by the Head of Year.
Bottom half options for Girls
The uniform has been created with the intent to cover a wide range of comfort needs while keeping in line with a modern and age-appropriate appearance by year level.
Skorts available to girls are sized to suit students from Year levels Prep to Year 6 with the option to wear it into Year 7 & 8. These should be worn no higher than 10cm above the knee
Formal skirt which is a slightly longer style designed to sit at the knee or just below is suited and sized to fit our mid to senior girls from Year 9 through to Year 12. Girls in year 7 and 8 are welcome to wear this item if they wish.
Formal Shorts have been designed to be worn by both male and female students and are sized to fit both genders from Prep through to Year 12. Sports Shorts have been designed to be worn by both male and female students and are sized to fit both genders from Prep through to Year 12.

Hair and other accessories
Prep to Year 12
Transition to the New College Backpack
Students are encouraged to transition to the new College backpack as part of the uniform refresh. While both the current PLC-logo backpack and the new College backpack may be used during the transition period (no other backpacks), families are asked to move towards the new backpack when practical. Please note that from January 2028, the new College backpack will become compulsory, and no other backpacks will be considered acceptable as part of the school uniform from this date. Much work went into the sourcing and pricing of the new backpack which is $30 cheaper than the previous uniform backpack.

Hair accessories should be neutral in colour or tone and complement / match the school uniform colours.

ITEMS NOT PERMITTED
Visible tattoo transfers/tattoos including henna tattoos (except for specific cultural reasons following the exemption process described below)
Visible ankle or wrist bracelets (safety considerations)
Other visible clothing, not approved as college uniform, including overcoats, beanies, hoodies, scarves, caps, or undergarments being worn for extra warmth
Excessive bright coloured make-up is not to be worn at school
Coloured nail polish or artificial nail extensions. Students will be asked to remove coloured nail polish at school and artificial nail extensions by the next day.
Unsafe footwear (such as thongs, slides, Crocs, Birkenstocks)
PERSONAL APPEARANCE GUIDELINES
Jewellery and Piercings
To provide clear directions regarding the wearing of jewellery to school and provide an environment that is safe, healthy and positively promotes PLC to the wider community. The following jewellery items are allowed for all students: watch
one fine neck chain with a small cross or cultural item no more than two plain sleepers or studs (a limit of two in each ear lobe and approximately 5mm max for studs and 12mm in diameter for sleepers)
In addition, secondary students are permitted to have: one ring a nose piercing stud provided it is not conspicuous or attracting attention
Additional ear piercing or other visible piercings that wish to be maintained must only have a clear plug. Please note that students will be asked to remove any other jewellery, regardless of whether it is a new piercing or not and are required to wear a clear plug.
Personal Appearance Guidelines
Make-up and Nail Polish
Subtle make-up, such as foundation, is permitted provided it is natural looking, not excessive and does not attract attention to the individual student.
Nails should be natural and unobtrusive, of a natural colour and of a practical length. Nails must not impede or restrict student participation in any part of the College’s curricular and co-curricular program. Primary School students are not permitted to wear nail polish. Middle and Senior School students are permitted to wear clear nail polish only. Artificial eyelashes that are not natural looking are not permitted. Lipstick, eyeshadow and eyeliner that is not natural looking is not permitted.
Smart Watches / Mobile Phones
In Primary Years, Smart Watches cannot be worn, and students are not permitted to have mobile phones at school.
In Secondary Years, Smart Watches must not be used for communication during the school day and are not permitted in examinations or tests. Mobile phones must not be used for communication during the school day and must be kept in the students’ lockers.
College Hats
Students in primary are to wear the College hat or bucket hat during all outdoor activities and whilst playing in the outdoors during breaks.
All secondary students are to wear the College hat/cap/bucket hat during all outdoor sport, (except when specified by Sports teachers), and whilst playing in the outdoors during breaks.
No other baseball cap/hat is to be worn at the College
All hats are to be named clearly.
No hat is to be graffitied, including attaching additional items.
Hat/sports cap or bucket hat are not to be worn in classrooms.
Personal Appearance Guidelines
Hairstyles and Shaving
Hairstyles can be a very individual way of expressing oneself and are often influenced by fashion and trends.
The college expectation regarding hairstyle is that it be neat, clean and not extreme in style or colour to draw attention to the individual student. Dying or tinting hair colour is acceptable only if subdued, modest and of a natural tone.
Any student considering changing their hairstyle and/or colour and is unsure how it might be accepted by the College should seek guidance first from their Deputy Principal – Primary or Head of Year (Secondary). If a hairstyle and/or colouring does not meet college expectations, the student will be asked to adjust it accordingly The Deputy Principal will be the decision-maker on what is considered appropriate and not drawing attention to the student.
In extreme cases a student will be asked to go home until it has been changed to the requirements of the school. Prior to re-entry the student must meet with Deputy Principal (Primary) or a Head of Year (Secondary) to ensure the issue has been resolved.
The following points outline the College’s expectations:
Hair should always be off the face, neatly cut and styled and not hanging over the eyes
Hair shoulder length or longer is to be neatly tied back in a ponytail or bun and secured with a college aligned colour band or ribbon.
Hair is permitted to be half up/half down provided it is off the face and neatly styled
Extreme styles (such as but not limited to rat tails, shaved/undercut, mohawks, mullets, horseys, obvious patterning, dreadlocks etc) are not acceptable.
Hair colour is not to be changed so that it is different to a natural colouring. This includes patching, heavy tipping and two-tones showing clearly rather than natural looking.

Short overall haircuts are to be a minimum of a ‘number 2’ cut Hair products that colour or sparkle hair are not permitted. Excessive use of hair gel, spray or mousse by students is not permitted. Hairstyles must not interfere with the appropriate wearing of the College hats.
For secondary students, facial hair is permitted provided it is in an advanced stage of growth, clean, trimmed in length (no longer than 10mm) and shaped or style to demonstrate care and maintenance.
Excursions
Students will be directed by their supervising teaching about what to wear. Closed in shoes much be worn at all times, with the exception of waterbased activities.
Interschool or Knockout Sport
Students participating in Interschool or Knockout Sport competitions must wear the full PLC Sports Uniform (including the college hat where applicable) without additions. Team uniforms where specified (e.g. basketball, netball or football/soccer) will be provided on loan by the College as required.
Specified Non-Uniform / Free Dress Days and Camps/Trips
On specified Non-Uniform / Free Dress Days, and some prescribed camps/trips, students may wear non uniform clothing.
On these days, students are required to dress appropriately, respecting the following guidelines:
Select dress items of a modest nature that are respectful and appropriate for a Christian school environment
Shoes must be fully enclosed and meet safety requirements for workshops, laboratories, sports fields and kitchens
Appropriate PE clothing needs to be worn for practical PE lessons. Shoulders must be fully covered, and clothing should not include bare midriffs, revealing shorts that sit above mid-thigh in length or necklines that reveal cleavage or under garments. Dress length should also be appropriate

Slogans or writing on clothing should not contradict the Christian ethos of the College
College expectations regarding hair, jewellery and make-up must be adhered to in alignment with safety considerations
Students are still expected to wear hats when outdoors.
Students who choose not to comply with these guidelines will be asked to change and/or they will be unable to be involved in a class or camp/trip.
RELIGIOUS INCLUSIVITY, CULTURAL OR PERSONAL EXEMPTIONS
For an exemption to any aspect of these guidelines, contact the Deputy Principal – Primary or Deputy Principal - Secondary in writing, outlining the reasons for the exemption. They will then consult with the College Principal and provide a response to the exemption. Please note that supporting documentation for an exemption will be required, however, this does not guarantee that an exemption will be granted.
PERSONAL APPEARANCE MANAGEMENT
For a student who chooses to present themselves inappropriately or incorrectly, based on these guidelines or wear their college uniform incorrectly, the following process will be used to manage this choice over the course of a Term.
