“Humanity is enormously powerful. Our actions and thoughts today create our future tomorrow. Each of your actions & thoughts has a subtle yet profound ripple effect. We are each responsible for, and have the ability to choose, how we influence that ripple.” Stuart Robertson 4

ARTISTS BIO STUART ROBERTSON Born 1969, Auckland, New Zealand Contemporary artist, adventurer and humanitarian Stuart Robertson melds photography, sculpture, film, symbolism and social media with cast glass, neon light boxes & metal fabrication to create stunning large scale art works that speak profoundly to the viewer, causing a confrontation of ones own preconceptions and an acknowledgement of our similarities in the human condition. Creating a global conversation and ripple effect with more than half a million followers, he draws on the phenomenal power of modern social networks and instant border-less communication that makes mankind more connected than ever before in history. Robertson has developed and refined his practice over 30 years. His works have become highly collectable and now hang in many established art collections throughout New Zealand, the USA and Europe as his profile continues to gain significant momentum globally. The artists passion for seeing the world through an alternate view runs deep. His grandfathers were both prolific photographers with their own darkrooms and camera collections. Their love for the medium underpins the artist’s own obsession.

TRIGGER LIGHTBOX

The conflict and tapestry of his life was etched onto every surface of his body and he ensured it was ‘tagged’ on his surrounding environment. Trigger made for an imposing character who held the rose only for the hope of a better future for his children. He was shot and killed in Los Angeles in October 2014, as far as we know this was one of the last portraits taken of Trigger. 187 is the Californian penal code for murder

NEONS Robertson’s ‘Neon’ series provoke a strong response of attraction with a sense of voyeuristic fascination for the viewer. Revealing the subjects innermost subconscious and playing with the delight of the viewers voyeuristic gaze. The artist identifies subjects whose resonance with visceral words and phrases is ingrained so strongly by the individual that they choose to tattoo their fists. Transmuting the tapestry and belief structure of their mind onto one of the most visible parts of their human body, the hands. Thus brandishing themselves with this mindset for life. The artist uses the subjects choice to ‘brand’ themselves with these extreme statements to remind the viewer of the human condition, that we all face moments of private inspiration or desperation. Neon is used metaphorically with the symbolism of the rose to illuminate the dark recesses of the human mind, turning private beliefs into contemporary provocation.

12

Robertson has expressed that some of the subjects he has found difficult to approach. Gang members and individuals who project an interpretation of ‘stay away’, if you come near me your life will be in danger. His personal practise has persevered through boundaries of societal expectations and safety, connecting with the essence of the human element that connects us all. Production for this series is defined by the contemporary illuminated sculptural form of the words. The fragile glass tubing dances and bends under extreme heat, neon or argon gas is added to culminate in neon words that leap forward into a three dimensional plane to speak to the viewer. The light of the neon draws the moth to the flame and invites you into the experience. The production method is sumptuous and intentionally raw without a protective barrier of glass between the image and the viewer. The artist designs the photographic image and glass neon to expose, unprotected, vulnerable, fragile, revealing the subjects innermost subconscious and playing with the delight of the viewers voyeuristic gaze.

ILLUSION Neon Life is an illusion. The future, the past, our life story. Everything we experience, a construct of the mind, a truth that does not exist outside the present moment. Any idea constructed by the ego, by the mind trying to grasp at ‘facts’ thus to make sense of this experience of being a human being is all ultimately an illusion. When you let it all fall away, the only universal truth that remains is pure unconditional love. In this study, the use of neon and symbolism of the white rose illuminates the dark recesses of the subject’s mind, turning private beliefs into contemporary provocation. In the end we are all just water and star dust. Enjoy the illusion, it is yours to create. Robertson’s ‘Lightboxes’ are a modern canvas where the artist is able to bring film quality and dimension to enrich the storytelling narrative of the image. Colours become sumptuous and vivid, monochrome works take on a graphic quality. The artworks pulse with energy and vibrate like a silent interlude. The rose becomes the constant narrative, the artist uses this symbolism of peace, creating a focal point in each artwork. In the lightbox series, the rose becomes a literal beacon of light and hope in the midst of the swirling human expression of colour, texture, clothing, hands, skin, nails, freckles, scars, tattoos, hair, jewellery and the environment they are photographed in.

24

Whether he’s photographing a global superstar or a beggar, Robertson will often partially cut out the subjects face, redacting the importance usually placed on the individuals facial communication. The artist encourages the viewer to see past the curated ‘masks’ we present to the world. Playing with taking the focal point away from the face, guiding it towards the rose and the expression of un-curated raw emotion, reverence and often awkwardness of the subjects hands. Robertson’s works challenge the viewer to see past the long held traditions of portraiture. This in order to bring an awareness to humankinds interconnectedness in our hopes and dreams, irrespective of the beliefs and societal constraints we impose on ourselves and each other.

NEON LIG NEON LIG NEON LIG Robertson’s ‘Neon Lightbox’ series are statements of illumination & light. They have alot to say, big personalities. They resonate.

The works illuminate the subject and express themselves in a way that is almost intoxicating to the viewer. When the works are viewed alone, they call out, silently singing their simple message of hope. Light in the dark, drawing you in, opening a dialogue to step off the wall into a sculputural realm.

SCULP Robertson’s sculptures are provocatively playful twists on the Peace and Love narrative that underpins his project. He works with cast crystal, one way mirrors, neon and stainless steel and incorporates iconic and emotive social symbols of non-peace such as a Police issue 45 calibre Glock Pistol made out of fragile cast lead crystal. Robertson’s full scale replica tank barrel, features a full length hand engraved inscription of the meaning of Namaste: “I honour the place in you where the universe resides. I honour the light, love, truth, beauty and peace within you, because it is also within me. In sharing these things we are united, we are the same, we are one”

46

PTure His crystal weapons series move into the three dimensional space of the object and immersing it with its conceptual opposite to create contemporary artforms of desire. Immersing them with an interdependant link, like a positive and negative charge that transcends the associated symbolism into an entirly new realm of provoking deeper thought on how humankind chooses to express the light or the dark side of our existence. His ‘LOVE’ series juxtaposes the masculine industrial with the tender pulsing heart of words of love and the feminine. The coolness of highly polished stainless steel reflecting the viewer against the electrically charged pulse of the artsits hand written word LOVE reproduced in red neon. Infinite LOVE a constant source of creativity and inspiration.

CAST CRYSTAL An exploration of polarities and interdependence to exist The impermanent fragility of a white rose The physical force of a loaded gun Peace | Violence Light | Dark

50

Guns and Roses’ In Robertson’s latest sculptural series ‘Guns and Roses’, the artist explores the polarities, the ‘tension between’. Day does not exist without night, joy without sorrow, life without death, peace without non-peace. Casting both symbolic forms in lead crystal, Robertson playfully forges a union of two symbolic opposites to exist within a solitary form. The infinite now contained within the finite. The rose (cast from the very Rose that His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Arch Bishop Desmond Tutu have both held and blessed) takes on a permanence and density, the glock gun takes on a fragility and transparency. Both shattering into a thousand pieces if dropped. The fragility of the human construct of peace. The artists belief that the key to peace lies in your hands.

Pe

‘Many of Robertsons photographic subjects who have held the rose have said ‘Peace is the absence of war’ or ‘Peace is worth fighting for’. This common contradiction inspired the artists deeper exploration of the concept of interdependance for either state to exist and their physical manefestations’.

An invitation to partake and view the seemingly impossible. A quest so simple, subconciously attainable yet always just out of reach. Robertson further explores the dual symbolism of the white rose; peace and pure love; through an interactive experience, like peaking inside a forbidden treasure box offering the impossible opportunity of infinite love. The highly polished surface of the artwork reflects the environment and the viewer. Three small apertures glow a soft red and invite the viewer to partake in this alternate reality.

“Images generate emotional

sub-conscious responses in us before conditioned intellectual objectifying of what we see gets in the way. After many viewings, I continue to find Robertson’s images emotionally moving; some profoundly so. These works seem to cut straight to the heart of what it means to be human and gently resonate it back to our own reality” Mark Hutchins-Pond

Bird of Paradise The Highlands of Papua New Guinea. A location steeped in adventure. Ancient tribal traditions living in the dense rain forests with wild tales of cannibalism and swift vengeance. Six million out of the seven million population live in remote parts of the country in tribes. Living a self-sustainable, natural lifestyle untouched by money, electricity and any modern conveniences. My time in the Highlands was intrepid, memorable and very challenging for so many reasons. Ode to Lascaux Low light cast crisp black shadows on the sun scorched Sepik River bed like the pigment of a cave drawing. Papua New Guinea’s Central Range spills down through the northern foothills to feed the Sepik floodplains. These foothills are riddled with more than 200 limestone caves which contain a variety of prehistoric and recent cave drawings. The largest collection of cave art in the southern hemisphere, few Westerners have ever seen. The rock paintings are part of a continuous culture of representation from the very first tribes people who settled in these hills more than 20,000 years ago to their descendants, whom I spent time with.
