It is said that opportunity arises out of adversity. When the COVID-19 crisis struck Clark County, local residents and businesses rose to the challenge with overwhelming generosity. PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center Foundation staged an area on the hospital campus to receive donated supplies of handmade cloth masks, N-95 masks, gloves, and face shields which were then distributed to departments for use. We also received food. Lots of food. Restaurants, grocers, food vendors, and coffee shops stepped up to provide hot, nutritious meals, tasty snacks, and much-appreciated coffee to the caregivers. The Dove Pantry, which offers employees no cost canned goods, hygiene products and household cleaning supplies, had its shelves fully stocked thanks to thoughtful donors. Two funds were established to help alleviate the costs associated with fighting the pandemic. ď Ž

COVID-19 Emergency Fund to provide necessary medical supplies and lab testing materials COVID-19 Caregiver Heroes Fund to support income-eligible caregivers facing financial hardship

PeaceHealth is in the midst of unprecedented demand on our caregivers, resources and capacity. I am deeply touched at the kindness shown by so many people; many long-time supporters and first-time donors wanting to help in any possible way. Thank you for making a difference for our patients, our caregivers and the community we serve.

Outpouring of support Detergent donation for caregivers in need We have received a generous donation of Arm & Hammer laundry detergent from consumer product company Church & Dwight. They know that times are very hard for some families right now. They also know that people are doing more laundry to keep their families safe, but laundry detergent is not cheap! Church & Dwight donated a total of 300 bottles of detergent (50 loads per bottle) to help stock our Dove Pantries at both hospitals in Vancouver and Longview.

Community steps While the medical staff of PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center swung into action to care for patients with COVID-19, the community was hard at work collecting donations, supplies, cards filled with encouraging words and meals from individuals and businesses. Items of every description poured in from homemade cloth masks (18,000 of them), gloves, cleaning and sanitation supplies,

Foundation offered donors an “Insiders View” to COVID-19 PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center Foundation has invited donors to learn about COVID-19 at our new monthly video events. These online forums have featured hospital leadership and expert clinicians sharing firsthand accounts of PeaceHealth’s preparation for the initial wave of patients. Dr. Jason Hanley and his team worked to quickly establish rapid testing at Southwest to ensure all patients coming to the Emergency Department were first screened in triage tents prior to admission. This action served to keep staff and patients safe from those exhibiting symptoms and testing positive for the virus. Tents were erected outside the Emergency Department to mitigate cross-infection by triaging, separating, and isolating symptomatic patients from other patients.

Our biggest accomplishment was keeping our patients and staff safe during this crisis. No one caught COVID, there was no workplace

exposure at Southwest.

Over 5,058 patients have been tested since the beginning of the crisis. While the triage tents have been removed, patients exhibiting symptoms or coming into the hospital for a procedure continue to be tested. Dr. Neville shared that the drug Remdisivir is now available to patients who meet the treatment criteria. We don’t know what the future holds regarding the duration of this pandemic, but you can be comforted in knowing that PeaceHealth remains committed to providing exceptional care to all who enter our doors. We are grateful to the many donors that make this exceptional care possible through their support.

Members of our Cascade Society are automatically invited to take part in “Insiders View” events from the comfort and safety of home via teleconference. Please join the Cascade Society with a gift of $1,000 or more today!
