Virtual visits, a healing touch Charitable gifts helped patients at PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center in Bellingham, Washington stay connected to loved ones through virtual visits by supplying iPads to patients and families who couldn’t afford them. That’s just one way your support is providing a healing presence to patients in need.

When retired pharmacist, Randi Slotte, heard there was an urgent need for COVID masks last year, she got right to work, “I knew I had to do something to help,” explains Randi. To date, she has donated nearly 830 masks to PeaceHealth St. John Medical Center. We are grateful for generous neighbors like Randi and you who care so much about helping those in need.

Rising to the challenge Across Clark County, restaurants, grocers, food vendors and coffee shops partnered with PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center to provide hot, nutritious meals, tasty snacks and much-appreciated coffee to our caregivers.

COVID testing for people in need In Fall 2020, PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center and local community partners offered three COVID-19 testing events to undocumented and uninsured Latinx, Black and Chuukese community members. Multi-lingual and culturally sensitive caregivers were on hand, along with teams of volunteers.

Getting and staying prepared Strengthening community With an outpouring of donor support, our COVID-19 Emergency Response Fund met the unexpected and enormous financial challenges posed by the pandemic, helping to purchase essential equipment and testing supplies for direct patient care.

Donations to the COVID-19 Emergency Response Fund at St. Joseph Medical Center helped to quickly create safe, dedicated care spaces for COVID-19 patients that are physically separated from other areas of the hospital. We maintain access to rapid testing, a reliable supply of medications and adequate supplies and personal protective equipment to care for everyone who comes to us.

PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center Foundation Strength in the fight against cancer Bob and Mary Jane Smith have been quietly giving back to PeaceHealth Southwest for nearly a decade. They believe that “neighbors should help neighbors” and their generosity has done just that—helping everyone who comes through our doors in need of care.

The Smiths are no strangers to the medical field.

The family owns and operates Wy’East Medical Corporation, with corporate offices and manufacturing facilities in Clackamas, Oregon.

Wy’East has been a leader in the safe patient handling and mobility industry for more than 30 years.

The couple’s commitment to supporting better health isn’t just professional, it’s personal, stemming from a deep sense of gratitude for the excellent care they’ve received at PeaceHealth over the years. Both agree that having an innovative medical facility nearby is critical to the health of the citizens of Vancouver and sets the

community apart as it continues to grow.

Through their charitable donations, the Smiths stand out as true partners in our healing Mission to care for all.

Most recently, Bob and Mary Jane generously supported our Giving Strength Cancer Campaign, investing in our efforts to unveil a newly renovated oncology inpatient unit. Now completed, this warm and healing environment helps cancer patients start the journey to healing in fully private rooms, with ample space to be comforted by loved ones. A few renovation highlights include: modern, private rooms, new floors, new lighting, new, safer bathrooms, new furniture— and warm, healing spaces that give strength to patients battling cancer.

PeaceHealth St. John Medical Center Foundation Never-ending support When Joe Fischer first learned that charitable support was a large part of the life-saving work at PeaceHealth St. John Medical Center, he knew he could make a difference by choosing to get involved. And that’s exactly what Joe did.

His own personal experience at St. John inspired Joe’s philanthropic investments from the very beginning—including routine primary care, then cardiac care to manage his atrial-fibulation, as well as successful treatment for prostate cancer in 2000.

“The physicians are astounding. I’ve had excellent care in every department—and I couldn’t be happier,” says Joe, who’s also grateful for the loving care his late wife, Alona, received.

“The nurses were so patient and compassionate.”

The peace of mind that comes with knowing such expert care is close to home—well, that’s just one more reason why Joe gives to PeaceHealth. “I want to support great care locally that helps more people in my community,” he adds.

Joe’s charitable commitment carries on to this day. Most recently, he’s given generously to St. John’s Heart Fund in support of purchasing leading-edge cardiac equipment. This area of medicine is close to Joe’s own heart, as his father struggled with cardiac challenges for years.

A visual artist who taught art at the University of Buffalo for nearly three decades before retiring in 1994 and relocating to Longview, Joe’s work can be seen around town—and even in the waiting area of our cardiac unit (yet another heartfelt gift from Joe that enhances our patients’ experience).

Joe’s belief in giving to make a difference is a true inspiration. “Donating to St. John is a top priority of mine,” shares Joe. “I’ll keep giving, and never plan to end my support as long as I can help it.” Because of Joe’s continued generosity—and yours—more people in Longview have a chance for healthier days ahead.

PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center Foundation A long history of remarkable support Since their very first gift to PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center in 2005, Bob and Lisa Bailey have remained committed to enhancing the overall health of the community they love, generously supporting many key initiatives to further our mission of providing the best possible care for everyone in Whatcom County.

Alongside other amazing donors, the Baileys have made it possible to build the PeaceHealth St. Joseph Cancer Center, open Whatcom Hospice House, and create an innovative Outpatient Palliative Care program to support those facing serious or chronic illnesses. It’s little wonder the two were presented with the “Philanthropist of the Year” award at one of our past galas.

As a retired entrepreneur from the technology sector, Bob has a passion for advanced

technologies that save and improve people’s lives.

Fittingly, Bob and Lisa recently made another exciting contribution that will transform care for the tiniest and most fragile members of our community—moderately preterm babies.

By initiating an incredible matching gift campaign, the couple enabled us to purchase six new Giraffe Omnibed incubators to help expand the scope of services available in our special care nursery to include newborns at 32 weeks gestational age and above. We are beyond grateful for the Baileys— and supporters like you—who are making it possible to offer these tiny newborns expert care close to home until they can safely leave the hospital.

Whatcom Hospice Foundation Whatcom Hospice Foundation is extremely grateful for the many donors and volunteers who give of their time, talent and treasure to support Whatcom Hospice patients and families.

Pat Kust is one of those very special individuals!

Pat has been a Whatcom Hospice volunteer for 31 years. She loves visiting with hospice and palliative care patients in their own homes or living facilities. She often brings flowers and pretty much just listens a lot. “Everyone has a story that should be told. Listen. Establish a friendship,” is her advice for all of us. “If you can make someone’s life happier, just go for it!”

Growing up with five siblings in a devout Catholic family on a dairy farm in Wisconsin, Pat learned the golden rule: “Be kind to others. Treat them the way you want to be treated.”

She still has vivid images of her dad pushing nursing home residents in their wheelchairs to Monday night Mass each week, a task he did faithfully until more than 80 years old.

Pat’s dad half-joked that he wished all four of his daughters would become nuns. Pat’s sister, Dorothy Ann Kundlinger, has served as a nun with the Franciscan sisters of Perpetual Adoration for more than 60 years and has been involved with hospice since before 1990.

Dorothy’s selfless work with terminally ill patients and their families inspired Pat to become a Hospice volunteer as well.

Pat retired from a commercial fishing business she and her husband, Peter, owned in Alaska from 1970 to 1995. Her teaching certificates for Wisconsin and Alaska were expired so classes in creative writing, genealogy, oceanography, computer classes and Bible study groups were wonderful challenges. Volunteering and companioning with Hospice patients have been most rewarding.

Pat has included Whatcom Hospice Foundation and other charities in her estate plans, ensuring that her legacy of helping society’s most vulnerable will live on long after she is gone.

Each year, more than 1,100 patients and their families across our community are served by Whatcom Hospice. Every person receiving our hospice care has access to a registered nurse, social worker, hospice aide, chaplain and trained volunteers— with a caregiver available on-call seven days a week, 24 hours a day.

When a loved one has a terminal illness, family members can easily feel overwhelmed and anxious about their caregiving role. Those who are closest to the patient need to know what to do in specific situations, what might happen next as the disease progresses, and how they can help keep their loved one as safe, comfortable and pain free as possible.

PeaceHealth Ketchikan Medical Center Foundation Corporate giving enriches community During the challenges brought on by COVID-19, Ketchikan-based Trident Seafood was among the first to help when it was needed the most, generously donating 52 cases of salmon for food insecure patients and their families. “We try hard to support the communities where we do business,” shares Plant Manager, John Scoblic.

One Registered Nurse trained and certified as a Wound Specialist through our Professional Excellence Fund

New technology, greater cardiac care As Director of Support Services at PeaceHealth Ketchikan Medical Center, Scott Smith has seen firsthand the power of your philanthropic support to elevate healthcare across the community.

A perfect example is the recent acquisition of our new 100% donor-funded Echocardiography (ECHO) ultrasound equipment.

“The purchase of leading-edge ECHO equipment has made a big difference in the level of care we can provide locally,” says Scott. “Before, cardiac patients needing such specialized diagnostic technology had to wait for visiting cardiologists from Bellingham who would bring the ECHO machine with them.”

This meant only 12 patients could be seen during a single visit, creating a large gap in delivery of care.

Thanks to you, all that has changed. Now, with ECHO technology in place at our hospital, patients have same day access, and in just a little over one year, nearly 1,000 patients have benefitted. “We’re saving people time and money, improving cardiac care and offering advanced medical technology that we might not otherwise have. A small community hospital like ours relies on philanthropic support to do our life-saving work,” says Scott.

Just as noteworthy, charitable giving also supported the hiring of a full-time stenographer expertly trained in reading ECHO results—this only adds to the importance of your giving that’s paying dividends in greater health.

PeaceHealth Cottage Grove Community Medical Center Foundation Grateful caregivers give back For 32 years, Tim Herrmann dedicated his professional life to PeaceHealth Cottage Grove Community Medical Center, serving as chief administrative officer before retiring last year.

Tim was drawn to join the PeaceHealth family largely because of our healing mission to care for all—and from the start, he’s been living this mission every day alongside our wonderful caregivers, physicians and leaders.

Well-respected as a highly skilled and passionate PeaceHealth advocate, Tim has always believed that having access to quality healthcare is a key cornerstone for any community.

This belief guided his leadership efforts here and inspired him and his wife, Pam, to become generous donors. “It’s very easy to invest in an organization that has proven itself through integrity and by upholding its mission—PeaceHealth is certainly deserving of that recognition and our community’s support,” says Tim. As Tim sees it, there’s no more altruistic gesture than giving back to the place that has given so much to him, his family and the residents of south Lane and north Douglas counties over the years. “PeaceHealth not only provides expert care for anyone in need, but it’s also one of the largest employers in our area,” adds Tim. “It’s essential for so many livelihoods and the health of our community. That’s why investing in this asset is so important.”

Both Tim and Pam share a sense of pride in their rich history with PeaceHealth. Their two children were born here and Pam has been a long time PeaceHealth employee, too. “Even as a small community hospital, sacred moments happen every day. It’s been a privilege to be involved in that,” says Tim. “My wife and I are grateful for the gifts PeaceHealth has given us—and we’ll continue to give back.”

Across South Lane County, a large and growing number of individuals and families are finding it difficult, even impossible, to afford basic essentials like healthcare. PeaceHealth Sacred Heart Medical Center Foundation Generations of caring and giving The importance of giving back to the community has been embraced by the Chambers family for generations. First, in the philanthropic spirit of Carolyn Chambers’ parents whose generous acts instilled in her the desire to do the same and led to Carolyn establishing the Chambers Family Foundation in 2000. Following in Carolyn’s footsteps, her daughter, Silva, has served as a trustee of the Foundation since the very beginning.

PeaceHealth Sacred Heart is beyond grateful to be among the many beneficiaries of the family’s amazing generosity. From playing an integral role in the creation of our state-of-the-art Sacred Heart Medical Center at Riverbend, to supporting our funding priorities such as the Children’s Miracle Network to help youngsters live healthier lives,

the family’s longstanding commitment to the health and wellness of our community can be felt by many here in Eugene.

Having personally endured the loss of several cherished family members, including her mother, sister and brother, Silva deeply appreciates the importance of having quality healthcare close to home. “There are so many needs out there, but few organizations touch the lives of as many people as PeaceHealth,” shares Silva who carries on her commitment to giving back as board president of Sacred Heart Medical Center Foundation. “It’s critical for us to be able to access excellent care locally, especially when health events can so often be timely.”

Today, the family’s philanthropic legacy lives on and in new ways. “My two nieces are now trustees of the Foundation. It’s been lovely to watch the next generation come in and be involved as leaders in the community,” says Silva.

A helping hand in times of crisis In a year already marked by extraordinary hardship and suffering, the devastating wildfires of last fall affected many people in the Springfield community, including dozens of PeaceHealth caregivers and their families.

Some lost their homes, others were evacuated or displaced. Thanks to you, our caregivers in crisis had somewhere to turn. Your gifts to our Fire Emergency Fund helped provide groceries and clothing, as well as financial assistance for hotel stays, utilities, rental payments and more.

Empowering kids & families This year, you helped more of our smallest patients feel safe and cherished during their hospital visits by supporting the expansion of our Child Life Specialist Department. In association with our Children’s Miracle Network, this program offers critical support to youngsters of all ages and their families who are dealing with the stress and uncertainty of life’s most challenging events, including acute and chronic illness, injury, trauma, disability and loss. We couldn’t reach these children and families in crisis without your generous support, thank you!

PeaceHealth Peace Harbor Medical Center Foundation Supporting women, supporting community Jane Yecny’s second daughter, Ellen, drew her first breath at PeaceHealth Peace Harbor Medical Center in 1986. Years later, Ellen’s own two children were joyfully welcomed into the world within our hospital walls.

This long family history is what inspired Jane, Ellen and her older sister Laurel to become ardent supporters of our Women’s Care services. The trio believes deeply in helping to ensure that all women in Florence have access to everything from exceptional birthing care to specialty services throughout every stage of life.

“Quality healthcare in our community is paramount and having providers who specialize in women’s care is especially important to me,” says Jane of the excellent care she’s always found at PeaceHealth. “In addition, not having to go to Eugene for any procedures that can be done locally is a huge plus.”

Jane’s daughter Ellen feels the same way, grateful for the excellent care she received from our doctors and nursing staff during both of her pregnancies and deliveries. “Many of the nurses had also been present for the birth of my daughter in 2017, and it was wonderful to see them again,” she shares after the recent birth of her son. “They all remembered me and my family. I can’t imagine receiving that personal level of care outside of a rural community.”

When asked why they give to our essential Women’s Care services, mom and both daughters agree that supporting women is supporting the community. “Every person in our community is or has a mother, daughter, sister, wife...” adds Ellen.

Thanks to charitable gifts received from our community over the past year, we’re delivering advanced technologies to improve heart health for our loved ones, neighbors and friends—including an upgraded CT Scanner system. As the latest diagnostic tool currently available, our new system provides the highest quality images to better detect illness or injury for all of our cardiac patients.

Just as important, this technological upgrade alleviates a significant travel burden for elderly and fragile patients living near Florence who would otherwise be forced to travel 70 miles to PeaceHealth Sacred Heart Medical Center in RiverBend in Springfield, OR for the procedure.

Few other rural areas offer this kind of exceptional care—and it’s all because of you.

An investment in the future A lasting legacy At 94-years young, Yvonne Hamson’s ties to PeaceHealth Sacred Heart run long and deep.

She and her late husband, John, began supporting Sacred Heart, through both time and financial resources, almost 40 years ago. And once Yvonne got going, she never stopped giving back—as a donor, a volunteer at the hospital gift shop, a current member and former president of the Sacred Heart Medical Center Guild, and the current Director Emeritus of the Foundation board.

Most recently, Yvonne has taken her giving to an even greater level with a charitable gift annuity that will help secure not only her future, but the future Yvonne Hamson

of healthcare in the community she loves. When asked what inspired her planned gift, Yvonne is quick to point out the exceptional care found at Sacred Heart. “My husband underwent three open heart surgeries and I’ve had surgery there, too. The care was great, the doctors incredible,” shares Yvonne.

Just as important, Yvonne takes great satisfaction in knowing that her planned gift will go where it counts—to help patients when they need it the most. “You can clearly see the impact the hospital has on our neighbors, loved ones and the Eugene/Springfield area. I want to leave a lasting legacy to support the future of quality care in Eugene so others can benefit.”

If anyone’s a shining example of living your values, it’s Yvonne. “I believe that those of us who are in a position to give have a responsibility to do so to build a healthier home for all, and that includes helping our neighbors who can’t afford care.”

Planned giving Guided by a deep spiritual faith and strong belief in caring for those in need, Grethe Barber’s experience at PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center began when Todd Martin hired her as an on-call chaplain nearly 20 years ago. As a retired chaplain, she’s given hours upon hours of her time bringing a spark of hope, compassion and spiritual support to the bedside of patients and their families, often in our Intensive Care Unit and Cardiac Care Unit.

As someone who has dedicated her life’s work to spiritual care, Grethe understands more than most the significance of our chaplaincy program to advance the holistic approach to healing—caring for the whole person, mind and body. This is the very inspiration for Grethe’s generous bequest in her will to expand Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) at PeaceHealth.

“I want to ensure this spiritual program continues to grow and is always available for patients and families,” says Grethe of the legacy she wishes to leave. “Chaplaincy adds a holistic piece to hospitalization and healthcare that’s really necessary.

By giving to PeaceHealth, I’m confident that my dollars will be spent wisely to support this healing mission.”

PeaceHealth’s Reverend Janet Hanson, a certified pastoral educator, considers our CPE program as most essential for the development of spiritual caregivers committed to serving patients of all perspectives with love and humanity. She is grateful for Grethe’s wonderful gift that “allows for the permanent placement of chaplaincy education within the hospital, and communicates that PeaceHealth values chaplaincy in supporting people on their journey.”

Appreciated securities: Donate stocks you’ve owned for longer than one year and receive an income tax charitable deduction when you itemize. You can also eliminate capital gains taxes. 

Life income gifts: If you are looking for income in retirement, consider establishing a charitable remainder trust and use appreciated assets to maximize your tax benefits. You receive income for life from the trust, with the rest supporting PeaceHealth after your lifetime. If you have a high net worth and are looking to minimize taxes, a charitable lead trust allows you to support PeaceHealth now and provide for loved ones in the future. 

Beneficiary designations: Review the beneficiaries of your life insurance policies and retirement plan assets. Many of these assets may result in a large tax hit for your family, but they pass tax-free to PeaceHealth. 

Gift from your IRA: If you are 70½ or older, give any amount up to $100,000 per year from your IRA directly to PeaceHealth without having to pay income taxes on the money. 
