W ELCOME TO THE 2017-2018 SE ASON! Featuring everything from Mavis Staples to Trevor Noah to The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain, this season is curated to celebrate living legends, inspire creativity and uplift the spirit.

With performers hailing from all over the world, the Peace Center has made a name for itself as a true destination for artists. At the heart and soul of the Peace Center mission is a wellrounded performance schedule allowing the organization to shine brightly in the Upstate as a place for everyone.

But so much of what happens at the Peace Center is beyond the stage. More than 56,000 people each year are served through Peace Center arts engagement and outreach initiatives, and it costs more than $1 million annually to maintain the six-acre campus. With the support of loyal patrons, subscribers, corporate partners and annual donors, who we affectionately call Peacekeepers, the not-for-profit Peace Center has not only been able to survive, but thrive.

After 27 years, it’s time to replace all 2,111 seats in the Peace Concert Hall. In the coming months, we’ll invite you to participate in this project by offering a contribution. In recognition of this gift, you’ll be able to name a seat in honor of a loved one. You’ve helped wear them out over the years, so we’d love your help replacing them!

Whether it’s looking at fabric swatches or meeting with architects about the future vision for the campus, the goal will always be to maintain the Peace Center as a cultural centerpiece for generations to come.

Two worlds collide in the Lincoln Center Theater production of this “breathtaking and exquisite” (The New York Times) musical, directed by Bartlett Sher. One of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s finest works, THE KING AND I boasts a score that features such beloved classics as “Getting To Know You,” “I Whistle a Happy Tune,” “Hello Young Lovers,” “Shall We Dance” and “Something Wonderful.”

Set in 1860’s Bangkok, the musical tells the story of the unconventional and tempestuous relationship that develops between the King of Siam (Jose Llana) and Anna Leonowens (Laura Michelle Kelly), a British schoolteacher whom the modernist King, in an imperialistic world, brings to Siam to teach his many wives and children.

She made a name for herself in the 1950s as part of The Staple Singers, went on to contribute to the freedom songs of the Civil Rights era, and later rose to pop radio stardom with hits like “Time Waits for No One” and “You Are Not Alone.”

Formed in 1985 as a bit of fun, The Ukulele Orchestra’s first gig was an instant sell-out. The ensemble has gone on to play concerts around the world, including the Sydney Opera House, The Royal Albert Hall, and Carnegie Hall. By royal request, the orchestra proudly performed at a private 90th birthday party for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II at Windsor Castle.

Inspired by Adrienne Shelly’s beloved film, Waitress tells the story of Jenna - a waitress and expert pie maker, who dreams of a way out of her small town and loveless marriage. A baking contest in a nearby county and the town’s new doctor may offer her a chance at a fresh start, while her fellow waitresses offer their own recipes for happiness. But Jenna must summon the strength and courage to rebuild her own life.

In the hot jazz movement, The Hot Sardines stand apart for the innovation, verve, and sheer joy they bring to music, both new and old. In the talented hands of this New York-based ensemble, music first made famous decades ago comes alive through their brassy horn arrangements, rollicking piano melodies, and vocals from a chanteuse who transports listeners to a different era.

This tremendous trio may come from different walks of life, but each has much to say about the South. Delana Dameron is the winner of the South Carolina Book Prize, Ray McManus is a professor at USC-Sumter, and Ed Madden is a professor at USC and the Poet Laureate of Columbia, SC.

Andrea Gibson and Danez Smith take the stage to confront some of the issues faced by the LGBTQ community. Gibson balances themes of love, gender, politics, sexuality, illness, and forgiveness. A 2017 National Endowment of the Arts Fellow, Smith is a black, queer writer and performer whose work has been featured on Buzzfeed, PBS NewsHour, and The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.
