Sustain-ability

We’re on a mission to make Peabody net zero carbon by 2030 in our day-to-day business and in our rented homes by 2050. Here’s how we’re embracing greener choices in everything we do.

What does sustainability mean to Peabody? We want to improve both the built environment and open spaces, help drive innovation and the green economy, and support people to make greener choices. Net zero carbon means that any emissions from our operations and homes can be offset.

We do this by generating renewable energy and increasing the biodiversity of our open spaces to remove carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere.

Working with you Having a local focus is very important to us and we want to work with you on making decisions and finding solutions. And we’re keen to ensure we don’t pass the cost of sustainability to the people who are least able to afford it.

As well as our free energy advice service (see over page), we have a recycling partnership with Resource London to improve low rates of recycling in purpose-built flats. By making it easier for residents, recycling rates have already gone up 26% across 12 of our estates.

Working with iRecycle and Crisis at one of our King’s Cross estates, we’ve saved 24 tonnes of bulk waste going to landfill while providing 148 hours of paid work.

What about renewable sources of energy? Our new homes take a “fabric first” approach, using building materials that make homes more energy efficient. We also look at installing the right source of renewable energy into these homes. “Living roofs” on our schemes in Lewisham, Southwark and Wandsworth help lower greenhouse emissions by absorbing CO2 and creating habitats for new wildlife while also being a joy to behold.

In future, we plan to invest in geothermal pumps which absorb energy from the earth to heat or cool our homes. Smart thermostats allow you to control heating in different parts of your home as well as and the hot water temperature water. This reduces bills by an average 17% and 158 tonnes of carbon emissions.

Want to become an eco champion? If you are interested in improving the sustainability of your estate, we would love to hear from you. We will be helping residents set up a network of Eco Champions across our estates.

If you are interested in becoming an Eco Champion or in joining our of our resident sustainability workshops, just email sustainability@peabody.org.uk.
