ello and welcome to your Christmas magazine for Peabody Care and Support customers and staff. We’re celebrating the inspiring stories of people going above and beyond in what has been a very challenging year, as well as sharing some of the many creative projects from across our care schemes and communities. You’ll also find tips for looking after your mental wellbeing and some festive games in the lead-up to Christmas!

elcome to our end of year newsletter and what a year 2020 has been!

While it has been difficult and challenging for many colleagues and the people we support, it has also been characterised by selfless commitment, unending resilience and great innovation. I know that many of our lives have changed in ways we could never have imagined but I guess we are all trying to move forward as positively as we can, learning from what has been and preparing for what may still be a tricky road ahead.

In the months since we were all hit by the coronavirus pandemic, our staff and customers have pulled together to keep each other safe and well. Everyone had adapted to help us collectively cope as well as possible. Colleagues and customers have become one community all experiencing the same challenges, fears and worries but most importantly looking out for each other with genuine care and concern.

The pandemic has affected us in many different ways, of course there has been sadness as customers and staff have become unwell and we have lost loved ones who are important to us. But one thing that has remained constant throughout these unprecedented times, is the dedication, passion and commitment of our teams, volunteers and community supporters, working hard to go the extra mile for our customers.

It’s been fantastic to see so many practical, creative and fun ideas to support each other, bring people together and keep our customers engaged. I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to each and every one of you.

In this newsletter, you’ll read about the different ways we’ve all been staying safe, connected and supported. I’ve been truly inspired by the amazing stories of people going above and beyond to support others at this time.

We know there are more challenges to come. But we are incredibly proud of what our teams and customers have achieved so far, and believe that together we can emerge from this stronger than ever.

I’d like to wish you all a very merry Christmas and I hope that 2021 brings you peace and joy.

aying thank you for the incredible work of our keyworkers has never been so important. Here’s how some of you have been doing your bit to make NHS workers and others smile during the pandemic.

Rainbow boxes

Clap for our carers Clapping, banging on pots and pans, whistling, even fireworks – all of these could be heard up and down the country at 8pm on a Thursday evening, to honour the heroic efforts of keyworkers on the frontline battling covid-19. Over at Gallimore Lodge care home in Grays, care workers Millie, Deon, Lisa and Gill created a rainbow balloon arch to show support to all key workers. The carers were joined by the residents to clap along and show their support.

Three of our customers at Third Avenue, a supported living service in Chelmsford, wrote to their local hospital to thank them for all of their hard work. They also included a colourful box of rainbows.

Here’s what the letter said: "Dear Broomfield Hospital Please accept our rainbow box from the customers and staff from Third Avenue in Chelmsford. We would like to thank you for all your hard work, care and commitment you have shown to everyone in our area, this is our way of saying thank you, we really enjoyed making this box for you and we hope you enjoy its contents.

We here at Third Avenue all have learning disabilities and usually attend local Day Services, so our lives were turned upside down with the lockdown, however we have found ways to keep busy at home and we are all having a great time together.

Our home is full of rainbows, inside and outside, we clap for you every week, so thank you!!!"

ur staff, customers and community volunteers and supporters have been working hard to help vulnerable and needy people in our communities.

Here are just some of the uplifting good news stories of people going above and beyond to support others.

Somewhere over the rainbow

Thumbs up for donations

A group of children who were still attending school during the lockdown in March, sent messages and paintings to brighten up our elderly residents’ days. The children sent paintings and cards to our Extra Care Service at Prescott House in Burgess Hill.

Emma Gould, Head of Service – Sussex said: “It’s so touching. We’ll be putting the paintings up in the windows to share the community spirit out there.”

In the spirit of all things rainbow, and some wonderful art coming from our schemes, we challenged customers and staff to create wonderful pieces of art work to celebrate the NHS and key workers. Although there could only be one winner, we’d like to thank everyone that took part and created these lovely pieces of artwork you see above!

A local “sewing bee” donated some homemade facemasks for people living at Pathways, our supported living scheme in Bexhill-on-Sea. As a shared supported scheme for 12 adults, some of the residents at Pathways were worried about not being able to self-isolate, so the facemasks were a welcome gift.

Kate Poyser, scheme Manager, said: “We didn’t know the person donating the masks, but they had been sewing face masks for the local hospital and care homes and wondered if we needed any as well. We felt very touched that the community had thought about us at such a difficult time.”

Knitted hope Ladies from the ‘Knit & Natter’ group in Basildon, Essex, created knitted hearts and rainbows for their local hospital. The hearts were distributed via the MacMillan Nurses in Basildon hospitals for patients receiving end of life care that can’t be with their loved ones at this time.

Masks and Murals Anne and Teresa, two of our customers at Pioneer house, a supported housing scheme for people with learning difficulties in Chelmsford, thought that with everything going on, people could do with some cheering up. So they created this brightly coloured outdoor artwork.

And the ladies of Stoke and Nayland Golf Club, Colchester got busy sewing face masks. They donated them to our care homes in Thurrock (Gallimore, Avalon and Woolifers). A big thank you for the donations.

And to our fantastic staff who used them to stay safe while caring for our customers.

Caring for residents at Avalon Avalon House in Grays, Essex, is a residential home for adults with learning disabilities, epilepsy and dysphagia. The eight residents are supported by a team of care workers who ensure that all their individual and social needs are met.

As a result of COVID-19, the local GP surgery set up weekly video consultations with each resident which has turned out to be a great success. Everyone was even more thrilled when Jackie from the surgery visited again to deliver chocolates.

Down the hatch! Meals in Alexander Mews Our team at Alexander Mews, a learning disabilities support scheme in Braintree, Essex, made dinners for some of our visiting customers who are struggling to get ingredients in the shops.

Socially-distanced celebrations

Encapsulating lockdown Customers and staff at Pathways, our supported living scheme in Bexhill-on-Sea , marked the past few historic months in their own special way.

Staff and residents at Pathways in Sussex wanted to find a positive way to commemorate this unique period of human history. They created a time capsule and buried it in the garden for someone to find in the future.

They all filled in an information sheet which asked questions such as “what are you missing?”, “who are you keeping up with and how?” and “what will you do first when lockdown is over?”.

They added them to the capsule alongside items of interest, including: • a Bexhill Happy Stone • a bottle of wine (it’ll mature with age!)

• a photo of the team • an NHS rainbow • letters from Downing Street, the Pathways manager and Peabody Chair, Lord Kerslake • plus a coin, stamp and newspaper!

Bernard Brett staff thinking outside the box Bernard Brett is a scheme in Colchester for young people to support them to find independent accommodation, the staff there have been thinking creatively about ways to engage the tenants and keep the mood light, they baked banana bread for all tenants and left them on their doorsteps. After taking part in a 10-day drawing challenge, customers and staff took to the pavement with chalk to bring more colour to the scheme.

They then wrapped the box up safely to weather-proof it and buried in the garden. Hopefully one day someone will find it and be able to learn first-hand how the Covid-19 pandemic affected everyday life in the UK.

Dave’s dominoes Dave Sams, Support Worker at Pioneer House, Essex works with customers with a learning disability. He found using dominoes helps to demonstrate how social distancing works: "I placed six dominoes in a row as if they were people.

I spoke about the virus and how it is passed on then I pushed the first domino piece which knocked down all the others. Then I stood them up again but removed every other domino. This time when I knocked the front one down the others didn’t fall, showing that the extra space helps the virus to stop spreading.”

Marking VE Day 2020 Victory in Europe (VE) Day on 8 May marked 75 years since the end of World War II in Europe. Like many others, our staff and customers found ways to safely mark this special occasion.

Residents at Prescott House, a care scheme in Sussex, joined staff for afternoon tea in the garden where they enjoyed plenty of cakes. They also had a sing-a-long to some of their favourite war-time tunes. Lisa Peters, Scheme Manager, said: "Although we were observing social distancing, it was lovely to see everyone putting aside their current worries, even if it was for just a couple of hours."

Meanwhile at Pioneer House, a supported housing scheme in Essex, residents took the opportunity to dress up for the occasion.

We've shown here just a small selection of the activities that took place but we're pleased to say that a good time was had by all!

A taste of home

Meet our ‘Supercentenarian’ Marjorie, a resident at Arthur Bliss House in Sussex, celebrated her 110th birthday on 1 August. She was born in 1910, which makes her a supercentenarian (anyone over the age of 110) and one of our oldest residents. While it’s a shame that she couldn’t have the big party that 110 definitely deserves, the team at Arthur Bliss made sure she still had a great day. She received lots of flowers and was visited by her family, as well as getting a telegram from the Queen. Marjorie still loves socialising, and is living proof that you’re never too old for a birthday party, or for birthday cake!

Leander Court and Lomond House in South London received a delivery of patties for our Caribbean elders amongst others from a local group, ‘The Caribbean Social Forum’. The forum was started by “the matured children” of the Windrush Generation in 2015 and currently has over 600 members mainly from the Caribbean and neighbouring countries. The offer of patties was a complete surprise and very well received by the tenants.

We're still celebrating Our staff and customers have been finding new and creative ways to safely celebrate birthdays during lockdown.

Pauline Willson, one of our team members at Here to help Havering, Essex, celebrated her 60th birthday in May. Her team didn’t want her to feel like they’d forgotten, so they went to hold up banners outside her house, and dropped off flowers, cards, and wine. They also sang happy birthday while keeping a safe distance from one another, and even her neighbours joined in!

A magical time at the zoo Staff and customers from Pioneer House went to Colchester Zoo to boost their wellbeing and celebrate friendships that have blossomed during the lockdown.

On the morning of the trip, customers met in the communal lounge of Pioneer House.

Cheryl Edwards, Team Manager, was all prepared with a picnic for everyone. Megan Kirkham, Support Worker, agreed to be the map director for the day. As they made their way to Colchester Zoo, customers were asked which animals they would like to see.

Cheryl Edwards, Team Manager said: "What a magical day we all had and the weather was on our side, I'm sure we will never forget the giraffes and elephants that was truly a special moment we shared together." Everyone took lots of photos throughout the day and before leaving the zoo, they visited the gift shop to get souvenirs. Anne got a little Colchester Zoo magnet, Lee got a leather necklace and Teresa got a lion mug and a tiger necklace.

Over at Darwin Court in Southwark, one of our residents, Gladys, turned 102. The staff had attended her 100th birthday two years earlier, and were keen to still do something to mark this occasion. Gladys can’t eat gluten so the staff clubbed together and tracked down a gluten free cake which they delivered to her (while maintaining social distancing and wearing PPE). Gladys is pictured here with Ola Dada, one of the scheme managers.

been talking about their trip to other support workers. Anne Dill said: "I had a very enjoyable day!. It was great to go out with my friends. Thank you Cheryl and Megs for arranging this." Teresa Hipgrave said: "I had a brilliant day. I mostly enjoyed feeding the giraffes and seeing the tigers."

Lee Rolph said: "I had a great time at the Zoo with my support workers. It was lovely to see all the animals. love days like this at Pioneer House." Megan Kirkham, Support Worker added: "I had lots of fun with my customers. It was lovely to see them having a good time, truly an amazing day."

And the winner is…

News from this year’s Great British Care Awards The Great British Care Awards pay tribute to those who have demonstrated outstanding service in their field of work.

Due to the pandemic, this year’s national finals were held virtually, and while we couldn’t celebrate the awards in the usual glitzy style, it was still an opportunity to

acknowledge the achievements of all the winners and nominees.

Kell Byer, a support worker at the Ivydale Road learning disability service in Southwark, was highly commended Home Care Worker Award category for the London region. In the South region, Fiona Dianin, Team Manager for three learning disability services, was shortlisted for the Team Leader category and Megan Boatman, Care Support Worker in a physical and learning disability service, also made the shortlist in the Care Home Worker category. All three colleagues have excelled in their roles, showing a real commitment to customers, colleagues and teams.

Here to help in Havering

Supporting Syrian Refugee Families: Amal’s story We’re working to support some of the most vulnerable Syrian refugee families starting a new life in the UK. Syria has the world’s largest number of refugees as the humanitarian situation continues to deteriorate.

Amal and her family relocated to the UK in March 2020, after living in a camp in Lebanon for six years. It was difficult leaving Syria and her friends and family behind. The camp in Lebanon was not an easy place. However, Amal could cook, and that helped her to support homeless people and children at the camp.

Amal’s love of cooking began at age 14.

She feels she was wiser than other girls her age. She was brought up to look after the household and was inspired by her mother. Food hygiene and clean surfaces, especially when cooking chicken and meat, are very important to her.

Amal’s favourite dishes include Mulukhiyah, which is thick vegetable soup often served with rice, and Tabbouleh, parsley and bulgur salad. Her Pakistani neighbour has fallen in love with Syrian food and has asked to try Amal's dishes, even if it's just a small amount.

Looking to the future, Amal hopes to have a catering business or small restaurant.

She’s keen to volunteer in her local community and would like to cook for

Here to Help offers free, short-term support to people aged 16+ who live in Havering, Essex, and need help to develop their independent living skills.

The team has continued to provide information, advice and guidance to local residents, whilst working remotely. Here are some of their achievements since April this year: • 6,021 calls answered to provide information and guidance • 183 Foodbank vouchers given to Havering residents in need • 37 families supported with furniture when moving into new accommodation • 22 people supported into work the homeless and those in need. Mimi Trifonova, Outreach Support Worker said: "It is incredible to witness and be part of the journey these families have been on, and to support them in adapting to a new life after arriving in the UK just days before lockdown started. The resilience, dignity and desire to learn, which the families have shown has taught me to appreciate the achievements I have made, and to be a better support worker. This experience with the families is a two-way learning curve and no two days are the same."

A day in the life of Liz, carer

L

iz is one of our Essex-based carers. She takes us through a few days in her working life and introduces us to Rachel, Donna and Paul…

Hi, my name is Liz and I am in the Flexy Team.

I work between three schemes in Chelmsford.

You can have a picture of me as I look much better in a mask.

MORNING SHIFT Day starts normally at 7am

Why do the guys get up so early?

Rachel makes her porridge and her tea or coffee and sits at the table. I do Paul’s latte and breakfast and another latte (Paul is registered blind but we encourage and support him to do as much as he can for himself). I support Paul and Rachel with medication and take Donna's up to her in bed - she likes a lie-in. Rachel clears the table and loads the dishwasher - that’s her job! I run her bath, testing the temperature for her. She likes her hair washed on Monday, Thursday and Friday. She baths and dresses independently.

Shaving balm applied next and aftershave (Paul will choose ‘Intimately Beckham’ because he knows it's my favourite). He will either watch TV or sit in the garden listening to his radio. If the birds need feeding I support Paul to feed them. Rachel is dressed now and she watches TV. I’ve already put the washing on.

We decorated the packages with rainbows.

We also stuck them in the bedroom windows to show our support. On Thursday evening we stood out the front and clapped with our neighbours.

While Rachel is in the bath, I help Paul with his morning shave before his shower. I give the downstairs a quick hoover, listening out in case anyone needs me. Paul dresses in his bedroom. I ask what T-shirt he wants today.

He will choose a flowery one because that’s the sort I wear and he can make out some of

What’s this I hear? Singing!

Donna is up, showered and dressed and first things first - she puts the kettle on for her coffee and offers to make everyone a drink. She then does her washing and puts it out on the line.

LATE SHIFT

So what are we going to do today? We had a chat about the virus and how hard the doctors and nurses are working. We decided to make a rainbow and send lots of goodies 10

MORNING SHIFT (AGAIN)

LATE SHIFT

Bed-changing day for Paul and he donates a couple of old duvets for a friend of mine to make into scrub bags. Paul also needs a haircut so I clipped it for him in the garden before his shower. I also brought nose clippers for his nose, eyebrows and ears - a very smart gentleman!

Donna is making 'fizzy lemonade jelly,' we had the rest of the lemonade with lunch.

I’ve come in today and the guys have been cooking with staff already and done the washing up. Super!

MID-SHIFT

Let's go for a picnic! I brought lots of goodies on the way to work. Here we all go the merry gang…

When we get back I help Rachel and Paul to put the washing out.

LATE SHIFT

We are entering the Rainbow competition.

We made a sun-catcher Rainbow mobile.

The guys have worked really hard and done a great job.

Paul’s niece visits him and they have a social distancing meet-up in the garden. He was so pleased!

BACK TO MORNING SHIFT

We didn't win the Rainbow competition but we got a rainbow cake for entering. It was delicious. Our Manager Cheryl popped in and what's that on the table? So that's where the last bit went!

Enjoying the picnic in the park, five minutes' walk from home. What a lovely day and the sun is shining.

Later, Donna lays the table for evening meal. Afterwards Donna and Rachel clear the table and Rachel loads the dishwasher.

She will empty it and put everything away once it's finished.

MID-SHIFT

Let’s have a BBQ! I am head chef - everyone seemed to enjoy it.

I help Rachel to phone her sister today.

They were able to see each other using WhatsApp. Donna rings her sister every day. I printed her number out and laminated it so she can phone her sister without any support now. The guys are having a good game playing Bowls in the garden. GOOD GAME, GOOD GAME.

EARLY SHIFT

Our bananas are looking a bit ripe, so Rachel makes a banana cake… yum! Donna fancied a stroll in the sunshine so we walked along the river and across the fields to watch the horses. What a lovely picture.

Rachel waits for the washing to dry. She enjoys bringing it in but she doesn’t like waiting. We do have to check it otherwise Rachel will put it away wet.

Well that’s it, I think I can have a day or two off now!

Poets corner

rne Court in Basildon, Essex, is a temporary homeless scheme for singles, couples and families. The staff team wanted to encourage the tenants to reflect on their personal experience of the pandemic, and express their thoughts and feelings through poetry.

What can I do to feel better?

Five ways of health and wellbeing this Christmas

T

he festive period is a time for joy and cheer. It can also be a very stressful period, leading to people feeling overwhelmed. Here are some ways you can take better care of yourself during this festive period.

Be Mindful Mindfulness is about being aware. When you're being 'mindful', you notice and pay attention to what you're doing, thinking and feeling and what's going on around you. Start by thinking about five things about the space you are in; what are you seeing, hearing, smelling and feeling. As we look ahead to start of a new year, it can be good to reflect. 2020 has been incredibly challenging, but hopefully there are some things that you can be grateful for that happened this year. It could be support from a person, an activity you did or a hobby you found during lockdown.

personal Christmas presents. Save Santa’s elves a job or two!

Get active We all know that sluggish feeling we can get after eating too much Christmas dinner (or leftovers on Boxing Day). Try to counter this by doing some gentle exercise; go out for a walk in your local area, try doing some yoga at home or have a dance around the living room to cheesy Christmas tunes!

Whatever form of exercise you prefer, try to do at least a little bit of it over Christmas time. You’ll feel much better for it!

Connect Christmas is all about spending quality time with families and friends and although this year we have restrictions, the households we do choose to mix with are important.

Our modern world makes it very hard to be truly present, but Christmas is a great time to practice this skill. Don’t spend Christmas getting a ‘buffer face’ watching endless movies, rubbish TV or surfing on Facebook.

Disconnect from your screens to reconnect with the people that really matter in your life.

Keep learning Stuck for Christmas present ideas? Why not learn a new skill? It can not only improve your wellbeing but also make for exciting,

Give Gift-giving for many is an essential part of Christmas. As well as giving gifts, we can also give our time – both to our loved ones and also by volunteering for causes we care about. You could try volunteering, or you could give a donation to a project you feel passionately about. If you are unable to spare the time or money, you can always give a smile or a caring word to someone in need. Giving to others is so good for wellbeing, 13

and it’s important to remember that it needn’t cost lots of money to be generous and make others happy.
