A Letter from the Headmaster Thank you! I am so thankful for the PDS community and as a faculty and staff we have been trying to let you know how very much you are appreciated. Our school would not exist without the generous support of generations of PDS graduates and their families. In this issue, we are thanking and celebrating many who have given to our school. On behalf of a grateful student body and faculty, thank you for all you have done to help PDS thrive.

As a school, we are excited to welcome two new strategic partners to the Memphis community. Pete Sanders recently began his tenure at Memphis University School. Our strong partnership with MUS has only been strengthened during the short time Pete has been onsite. We know that the vast majority of our students matriculate to seventh grade at MUS, and in recent years we have made certain they are ready for the next step in their education through a solid partnership.

George Robertson is the new senior pastor at Second Presbyterian Church. We are excited for his experience and vision for Christian education. He brings a wealth of knowledge and an eagerness to support PDS. There is no more important partnership for PDS than 2PC, and we are looking forward to this next chapter with eager anticipation.

New Faculty With the start of the 2017-2018 school year, we welcome ten new teachers to the PDS Community.

Ginny Brundick - 1st Grade Teacher

Ginny Brundick, a native of Memphis, TN, is joining us full-time after working as an interim teacher for much of last year. Mrs. Brundick has ten years of teaching experience, and she is returning to full-time teaching after time at home with her children. Ginny has a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Rhodes College.

Jessica Chandler - 3rd - 6th Grade Spanish Teacher

Jessica Chandler grew up in Memphis and has 14 years of teaching experience. This will be her second time to be a part of the PDS faculty as she taught PK-2nd grade Spanish at PDS from 2006 to 2012. She has a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and Spanish from Ole Miss and has also studied Spanish in Cuernavaca, Mexico at The Cemanahuac Spanish School.

Abbie Faith - Young Knights Teacher

Abbie Faith, a native of Oklahoma, is joining our Early Childhood team as a Young Knights teacher (two-year-olds). She worked as a substitute last year (YK-6th grade) as well as working in AfterCare. Ms. Faith has her degree from Oklahoma State University in Elementary Education.

Becca Harris - Pre-Kindergarten Associate

Becca Harris, born and raised in Memphis, is joining the Early Childhood team as the PK Associate. She has worked in PDS Aftercare for the past two years and has a degree in Child Development from the University of Memphis.

Natalie Martin - 1st-3rd Grade Learning Specialist

Natalie Martin is joining the PDS faculty as a learning specialist for grades 1-3. Mrs. Martin has six years of teaching experience. She comes to us from St. Mary’s Episcopal School where she taught 1st grade for four years. She has her Bachelor of Science degree in Early Childhood Education from the University of Georgia and her Master of Education in Teaching and Learning from Union University.

NEW FACULTY

Jessica Muller, a Memphis native, is joining our 3rd-grade team. Mrs. Muller has three years of teaching experience. She comes to us from Grace-St. Luke’s Episcopal School and has a Master’s Degree in Elementary Education from the University of Memphis.

Tracey Oliver - Early Childhood Mandarin Teacher

Tracey Oliver is a native of Wisconsin, but has lived in Memphis for over four years.

She will be joining our team as the Mandarin teacher for the Early Childhood Department.

Mrs. Oliver began her study of Mandarin while living in China for two years. She comes to us with a Bachelor’s degree in Human Development and Family Studies and is currently working on her Master’s degree in English as a Second Language (ESL) from the University of Memphis.

Lindsey Robinson - Director of Academic Support/First Grade Learning Specialist

Lindsey Robinson is joining us as the Director of Academic Support. A native of Fort Mill, SC, Mrs. Robinson has 12 years of teaching experience. She comes to us from Germantown Elementary. Mrs. Robinson has a degree in Early Childhood from Winthrop University as well as a Master’s Degree in Divergent Learning from Columbia College.

Jenny Stenberg - 4th Grade Teacher

Jenny Stenberg, a native of Memphis, is joining our fourth-grade team as a Language Arts teacher. Mrs. Stenberg has twelve years of teaching experience. She comes to us from St. Mary’s Episcopal School and has a Bachelor’s degree in English and Secondary Education from Vanderbilt University.

Lindsey White - Senior Kindergarten Teacher

Lindsey White, a native of Memphis, TN is joining our SK team. Mrs. White has six years of teaching experience. She comes to us from Hutchison and has a Master’s degree in Teaching and Learning from Union University.

Young Knights-3rd Grade Bible Teacher & Director of the Crain Center for Global Studies

What is your background?

My dad was in the Air Force, so my family lived many places, including Okinawa for four years. We moved to North Little Rock, Arkansas when I was in the sixth grade, and I graduated from high school there.

I attended the University of Arkansas, where I met my husband, Tom, who was on a football scholarship.

Tom is a lifelong Memphian and a graduate of MUS, so we moved to Memphis in 1983 when we married.

How did you get interested in teaching?

I remember teaching my dolls as a little girl and loving to write on chalkboards. As a teenager, I babysat a great deal and realized how much I loved young children. As I considered career options, teaching seemed to be a natural calling for my life. I was also a leader in a women’s Bible study at my church and wrote the children’s curriculum, and this fostered a love of teaching both Sunday School and Vacation Bible School. When my dear friend, Wendy Edwards, told me about the Bible teacher opening, I committed to pray about it. After meeting with the Headmaster, I strongly felt the Lord leading me to PDS.

Why do you teach?

3 John 1:4 says, “I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth.” I consider teaching to be a high and holy calling. I see everyday, every class, and every student as a God-ordained opportunity for me to share the love and grace of Jesus. PDS boys are world-changers! In 1 Corinthians 3, Paul explains there are those who plant seeds and those who water them, but ultimately God brings the

harvest. As an educator, I get to be a planter and a waterer in the academic and spiritual lives of these boys.

Why teach at PDS?

In my time at PDS, I have been challenged to grow spiritually and professionally. The opportunities offered to teachers are unlike any other school.

The support of fellow teachers and administrators gives us the freedom and encouragement to try new things and continue being lifelong learners. I am inspired and challenged daily by my bright, creative, supportive, and hilariously funny colleagues. We have a unified commitment to our students’ best interest and how we can join together with parents and each other to best address the needs of each student.

What do you enjoy doing when you are not at PDS?

I love to travel and spend time with family and friends.

I enjoy reading and learning new things. Right now, I am learning to speak Italian.

What do you want a student to get from having had you as a teacher?

I want every student who has had me as a teacher to know three truths: He is a child of God and is loved beyond measure.

(John 3:16) God has a unique and wonderful plan for his life.

(Jeremiah 29:11) Out of a grateful heart, he should love and serve others. (Matthew 25:40)

Advancing Our Mission

I

f you wander the halls of PDS, you will hear the word “strategic” in use throughout the campus. Our Strategic Dads University has helped hundreds of fathers around Memphis learn to lead their families through goal-setting and intentional parenting. Faculty are constantly looking for ways to be strategic in the implementation of our STEAM curriculum. “How do the disciplines of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math intersect in authentic ways for boys under the age

of 13” is our essential question. It takes effort to be strategic, but the results are often unparalled.

For my part, the Board of Trustees and I have been working hard on three strategic initiatives. We have prayerfully kept our school’s mission in mind, PDS strives to glorify God by developing boys in wisdom and stature and favor with God and man, and we are excited by the work of three active committees to support our school.

Teachers Fund

Young Scholars

Giving our first merit based award to Junior Kindergarten teacher, Shari Caruthers, in May 2017 was a great joy. The DeWitt Shy, Jr. Faculty Award for Exemplary Work Ethic was the first in a series of 10 awards that we hope to fully fund to support the amazing work of our faculty and staff. Teachers are the lifeblood of our school. They work tireless hours, are devoted to the boys, and are constantly improving their craft. These professionals are not compensated at a high rate, yet they give their all for the school.

The Teachers Fund will make it possible to continue recruiting and retaining the finest faculty. Currently, we have two of the ten endowments funded.

The Young Scholars program was created to provide access to promising students whose familes might not have the means to afford a PDS education.

PDS has been blessed to have numerous Young Scholars over the past nine years. These boys come to us with a recognized ability to thrive and parents who are fully invested in the success of their son. All PDS boys benefit from being part of a more diverse school.

We have high hopes to reinvigorate the program as we have already seen the incredible impact on many boys who are currently thriving in top secondary schools around our city.

This year we welcome five Young Scholars to PDS. These boys enter our school in the Early Childhood division and are supported by outside donors and foundations who want to be a part of their success.

We are currently meeting with families to help bring 6-10 more Young Scholars to PDS each year.

Building Boys, Making Men The character and spiritual education of our boys is of paramount importance. Standing alongside our powerful academic curriculum and ever-growing extracurricular program, Building Boys, Making Men is continuing to grow and evolve. Our committee has been hard at work creating a plan and contracting with a strategic partner to help us grow our influence.

We want to create content and programs that will support our boys and their fathers from first through sixth grade and beyond. Our goal is to give boys a clear definition of godly manhood and help them understand it clearly, live it out daily, and share it boldly.

Additionally, we hope to equip fathers to teach and lead their families. Our fundraising efforts have begun as we are committed to strengthen the program and not raise the cost of tuition in the process.

Profile of a Young Scholar

W

hen Kyler Herring ‘16 started at PDS in senior kindergarten, his mother thought it would be a trial run that would last a year or two – maybe. Eight years later, this Young Scholar is a PDS graduate and thriving as an eighth grader at Memphis University School.

– KYLER HERRING, ON THE BUILDING BOYS, MAKING MEN CURRICULUM Like all the sixth graders, Kyler completed Flight Plan, the Christian characterbuilding curriculum developed by PDS. “It’s a good basis for learning how to be a man, how to have good morals, and how to develop strong character. I got a lot out of it.”

Kyler was in kindergarten at Germantown Elementary School when, on a classroom visit, Linda Douglas (PDS Admissions Liaison) noted his advanced reading skills. After further prayerful consideration and consultation, she contacted Shawna and encouraged Kyler to apply to be a Young Scholar.

Kyler’s older sister enjoyed her experience at Germantown Elementary School, and Shawna assumed Kyler would follow her path. But, she thought, PDS did seem like such a good opportunity. Maybe they should try it – for a year or two.

A year or two turned into seven. “Kyler was happy at PDS and, like I said, well-supported during his tough times. I didn’t realize how much it meant to him until recently, when he went back for a visit. He came home grinning from ear to ear, telling me all about the teachers and students he’d seen and the school news he’d heard. That’s when I knew. Absolutely, we had made the right decision.”

Both mother and son agree PDS prepared him very well for MUS, where he’s now thriving in the classroom as well as on the football field and basketball court.

“As a mother, it’s a great feeling to know he’s prepared for whatever is ahead — whatever direction in education he chooses. That’s what PDS gave us.”

When he started at PDS, Kyler had some concerns every students asks himself at some point during adolescence: Will those kids like me? Will I fit in?

Overtime, his questions were answered and his fears were nullified; Kyler soon found PDS to be the friendly environment over 600 boys each year know it to be. Before long, he clearly felt a sense of belonging within the PDS community.

“Kids at PDS are pretty open about themselves and their feelings,” he says.

Kyler approached both PDS friendships and academics with incredible resolve. While his favorite subjects, math and science, were fun hurdles to tackle, writing papers and expressing his thoughts for English sometimes had him flummoxed. With every hurdle, he remembers always receiving support from the faculty, who presented challenges to help him feel prepared rather than defeated. “The teachers are so supportive. They helped correct my grammar and writing. They gave me everything I needed to succeed,” he says.

His mother, Shawna Herring, felt personal support from the PDS faculty when her husband died unexpectedly. Kyler was in fifth grade.

“The outpouring of care and concern was incredible. I got calls almost every day from faculty and staff letting me know how Kyler was doing. Knowing so many people were looking out for him made me feel so much better.”

Three generations of Wunderlichs have walked the halls of PDS.

A

s Mr. Philip Cummings releases his 6th-grade Language Arts class, Ben Wunderlich ‘18 makes his way to his locker. This particular Wednesday morning had put some mid-week stress on him, but it’s lunchtime - a celebrated break in the middle of the day. I stopped him in the hallway and said, “Hey, I need your thoughts on this article that I’m writing for the PDS Spirit.” He looked skeptical at first, giving me a look of uncertainty. After a moment, his brow relaxed and he said confidently, “Yessir, I can do that.” While there may have been a dose of excitement about being featured, what showed most was Ben’s willingness to help his former teacher in this endeavor. It was apparent in that moment that Ben, a tenured member of the PDS community, has been nurtured by the school’s virtues of service and selflessness.

Ben credits PDS for helping him grow as a servant leader and friend, but much of his character can be accredited to his family legacy. Ben happily explains that his father and grandfather have been important role models for him. “They have taught me to follow my instincts, trusting my core virtues to guide me through life. When things are difficult, wisdom steers me through challenges. I think my family has helped me develop those instincts.”

The values that Ben has clung to for wisdom and guidance have been instilled in him by two generations of PDS boys before him. Bill Wunderlich ‘58 and Ben Wunderlich ‘91 have both walked the halls of PDS before their grandsons and sons.

The memories of their time at PDS are fond; through the years, they have held tight to the virtues instilled by PDS. “Back in my PDS days, I was a crossing guard with a big red flag that helped students cross at Poplar and Goodlett,” remembers Bill. For many Memphians, an adult crossing guard at any Poplar intersection is a life-threatening task (one that many of our brave PDS staff undertake daily). To imagine a 6th-grade boy guiding traffic is astonishing – a

chuckling reminder that things were a bit simpler, and traffic less complex, when the school was in its early beginnings. Bill explained further, “For being the crossing guard, I earned early recess privileges.

At PDS, helping others was rewarded.”

The same holds true today. I asked Ben if he felt that PDS continues to reward helpful and selfless behavior. “When people happen to pick up trash in the hallway on their own merit, students are often given a dress-down day. These rewards remind us that selflessness pays off,” said Ben, who kindly took time out of his lunch to talk with me.

Marjorie Porter teaches 6th grade Language Arts and added some insight into the deeper rewards she sees in her students. “I find that being a prekindergarten buddy rewards the 6th graders.

Modeling behavior for young students garners its own personal rewards. They’ll even go off campus to Berclair Elementary to read to kindergartners, which is another personal merit experience offered to our students.” These experiences build character by instilling kindness, a value that has been timelessly integral to a PDS education.

Ben’s father, Ben ‘91, remembers the kindness of his fellow classmates. “I was cleaning out my room a few years back and found a stack of notes written on notebook paper from my classmates at PDS thanking my mom for driving on a field trip. Some even signed with their nicknames to my mom, Mrs. ‘Wundy.’ I even read one aloud at a rehearsal dinner years later. The memories are countless, and I think it is amazing that my boys will come away with many of the same.”

Ben’s younger son, Alex, is a 4th grader at PDS. He shared his favorite moments of friendship at school. “The reason I like school at PDS is the competition that I share with my friends during P.E. and sports. We like to play against each other, but that makes our friendships stronger.” Alex explains what every boy at PDS experiences – becoming a true friend through camaraderie and competition.

I asked the Wunderlich men which virtues have stuck with them over the years. Ben ‘91 explained, “At PDS, I learned to persevere, both academically and athletically. I didn’t always make an A or B, and my team may not have won every game, but I learned how to work hard and persevere through those challenges.”

Bill has similar sentiments, and also notices it in his own grandchildren. “PDS got me ready for the rest of my life. I have noticed that Ben and Alex have good sportsmanship. They may get down sometimes, but they come back. I think PDS does a great job of coaching that. It’s real life.”

Through collective memories and shared values, the Wunderlich family understands how deep the roots of true friendship and selflessness can grow. PDS continues to be the nurturing soil that develops bonds between cousins, brothers, fathers, and grandfathers of so many families who have attended this school. Ben will be graduating 6th grade 60 years after his grandfather Bill did in 1958, and yet time has not altered the virtues of PDS. As boys enter this school, and men leave, they continue legacies of kindness, loyalty, and perseverance throughout generations.

The Stamp of a PDS Student

W

hen I think back to my time at PDS, I don’t necessarily remember all the classes I took or all the different activities with which we were involved. I do remember learning how to shake hands properly. This seems like such a basic skill, but it was a priority at PDS. Len Sumner would come by your classroom and select a few boys.

When he selected you, you had to stand up and shake his hand. If you did well, you got a Superman stamp on your hand, and let’s be honest, there was absolutely nothing more important than getting the very cool, bright red Superman stamp. This was an old-school red ink pad and a rubber stamp, but I remember it being such a big deal to make sure that you earned that mark of success.

As a student at PDS, I did not have the perspective to appreciate the value of the education I received.

I was focused on more important things at the time, such as dissecting frogs in Mrs. Nabers’ science

class or whether I could sit on the top row of the amphitheater in the library during movie time.

When I observe PDS from a parent’s point of view, it is the attention to detail with the boys that sets PDS apart. When I watch my boys shake Mr. Hancock’s hand each morning as they walk from the carpool line to the building, they don’t get a Superman stamp like I used to receive, but the values and attention to detail have not changed. Having my two sons at PDS, the older one soon to be a third-generation graduate, makes me very proud. PDS has been a major influence on my family’s life over several generations, and it would be wonderful to watch the next generation attend PDS in the future and receive the kind of education that lasts a lifetime.

E

ven though they trained for more staid careers, three members of the PDS family are making it big in the fun business. Taylor Berger ‘92 and business partner John Planchon, father of the younger John Planchon, JK, have been friends since their undergraduate days at Rhodes College. Taylor is an attorney, and Jack works full-time as COO of a real estate firm in the Southeast and on the West Coast.

They recently brought their backgrounds in tax law and accounting together to open Railgarten, an acreand-a-half play center in Midtown.

A third partner, Jack Phillips, father of PDS prekindergarten student Johnson Phillips, joined the team a few months ago. Jack graduated from Ole Miss with a degree in international business, but now invests in restaurants right here at home. Jack was a natural addition to Taylor and John’s partnership. He has been a restaurant investor for several years. He was a partner in BB King’s Blues Club until it was sold last year. While there, he was instrumental in growing

the business from one location to fifteen. Jack says he is involved in the hospitality business because he didn’t want to be stuck behind a desk. He wanted something that was — you guessed it — fun.

This team designed Railgarten to be a backyard oasis teeming with niche diner food, exotic ice cream flavors, and specialty cocktails. Its playground arena includes a volleyball court, picnic tables, dozens of lawn chairs, and plenty of space for kids to roam.

Food and drinks are available at several locations throughout the yard, and you are encouraged to dine inside or out.

Railgarten knows that it takes a special amount of courage to let pets and kids run loose in an old Midtown rail yard, and the sights and sounds of the historic railroad stop have become the stomping grounds for local Memphians. What was once a junction has become a final destination. Located at the corner of Central and Young, the property backs up to railroad tracks where people once caught the

train into town. When Taylor saw shipping containers whizzing by, he knew immediately that he wanted to incorporate a railroad theme into this mixed-use space. He had been itching to do something with this non-traditional building material for years. These shipping containers are artfully used in the stage, bar, andseating area. Railgarten’s infrastructure might say, “we mean business,” but its entertainment philosophy says otherwise.

These three partners each have young children, so making Railgarten kid-friendly was a top priority. Jack says, “It’s not easy to take little ones out for a meal, because they don’t always want to be quiet and sit still.

As the sun goes down, Railgarten’s atmosphere transitions from family-friendly to adult-friendly.

“The night crowd consists of adults of all ages and all demographics from neighborhoods all over Memphis,” says Taylor. He tapped Chef Aaron Garland, known around Memphis for his popular MonkeyTrain food truck, to design their menu. His truck is now parked on site and will leverage its mobile capabilities for catering services. Chef Garland may have a classical culinary training (he trained at the French Culinary Institute in New York), but the main ingredient in every

recipe is pure fun. One of Chef Garland’s remarkable features is his ability to assemble international dishes onto one comprehensive menu, featuring both fried cheese curds and bibimbap salad, a truffled egg sandwich and a Korean crispy chicken sandwich.

Not to mention his mouth-watering, hearty double-milk stout-braised short ribs over three-cheese pimento mac and cheese. But maybe the most intriguing dish — as well as delicious — is the duck fat fries. “They’re thin, crispy, and spicy. Then the duck fat hits you, and the taste is amazing,” Jack says.

Before it became an entertainment epicenter, this site was home to a hodgepodge of establishments including an overstuffed antique store, a karate studio, and an icehouse. Taylor has repurposed this sterile scene into a dynamic, vibrant landscape. For example, the large icehouse is now the ping pong bar. Why ping pong, might you ask? “Almost everyone has fond memories of playing ping pong in their garage or their church basement,” says Taylor. Taylor and John visited a ping pong bar in another city and knew immediately it would be welcomed in Memphis. These two prove they are equally adept at spotting a good idea as they are inventing original ones.

Railgarten is not Taylor and John’s first venture in fun. Taylor opened a frozen yogurt shop a few years ago. Then the two helped create Loflin Yard, a sprawling one-acre bar, restaurant, event space, and

and Rec Room, these men have a unique ability to both create and recreate, to invent as well as reinvent.

Taylor and John came upon this ground-breaking development concept when they helped organize Untapped, a party at the vacant Tennessee Brewery downtown. At the time, they didn’t know if the event would be a finale or a beginning, but Untapped proved to be an immediate and long-term success. It brought awareness not only to this historic 1890’s building, but also to the potential of many real estate projects to come. Since then, Taylor and John have been committed to a mission that preserves and a vision that revitalizes historic spaces in the heart of Memphis.

Taylor attributes the success of Railgarten and other ventures to the times we live in. “People are tired of computers that rip you away from other people. They want to return to actually playing with friends, family, and co-workers.” He and his partners recognize that sharing a tangible space fills that communal void. Not to mention, it’s irresistibly fun.

outdoor “living room” of sorts downtown. The facility includes The Coach House and The Safe House. The former was once home to the downtown carriage fleet, and the latter is named for the previous tenant Loflin Safe & Lock Company. There’s also the Front Yard, a community green space and gathering place, as well as the Back Yard, complete with a massive deck built over “Loflin Falls”. Community-building is imbedded in the blueprint of Taylor’s and John’s design for both Loflin Yard and Railgarten, and their ability to efficiently organize both urban landscapes is a testament to their ingenuity and vision.

Yet another noteworthy space is their Rec Room, which sits at the corner of Broad Avenue and Tillman.

It is both a bar and vintage game parlor, where according to the room’s promotional materials “adults can be kids again and kids can revel in games past.”

Its expansive 6,000 sq. ft. includes game tables, six mammoth projection screens, vintage videos, a craft beer bar, and a food truck dock.

John says their fun ventures are usually real estate driven. “We look for interesting but under-utilized properties. When we find one, then we decide what belongs there.” Judging from Railgarten, Loflin Yard,

The Greatest Show-and-Tell on Earth

O

n April 20, PDS was introduced to the “Greatest Show and Tell on Earth” at our first ever Maker Faire, a celebration of innovation and creativity. PDS boys were encouraged to embrace the maker movement and make a project at home to showcase on this night. Whether the project involved science, engineering, art, technology, food, games, or crafts, if a boy made it, he was invited to show it off at the Maker Faire!

Over 100 boys accepted the call to participate in the Maker Faire. With a mentor guiding their work, the boys became designers, inventors, and tinkerers. During the event, spectators engaged with

the participants to learn more about each individual project. Not only was this a night to view special projects that were already constructed, families attending the event were able to purchase dinner from local food trucks and participate in several activities too. We were excited to invite students from the West TN STEM Hub to lead a water filtration project, and we were also grateful to a local business, The Art Project, for joining our event. If you missed out on attending this year’s event, don’t worry! This combination of food trucks, friends, and fun will certainly be featured again next spring. Start thinking now about the projects that are yet to be designed!
