elcome to the 4th Annual Prairie Distinction Bull Sale. This sale started to provide the opportunity for these breeders to showcase their programs to the industry in a sale format. It has done just that and the results have been very good, with bulls from this sale going into some of the top herds in the country and breeding on. Yes, there are herd bulls here for both purebred breeders and commercial producers and lots of numbers to choose from. The breeders in this sale are very active in the Charolais industry with five of the eight consignors on the board of the Manitoba Charolais Association and one on the Canadian board. They are an enthusiastic and fun group to work with so come and enjoy the hospitality. From bulls that would work in a heifer pen to some big-time performance animals, including red factor and whites. There is also a good selection of two-year-old bulls that fill these categories too. These aren’t leftovers but come from breeders who are developing them to last and are raising them to sell as twos. This past fall we saw the premium paid for the Charcross calves as consistently high as it has ever been in the auction markets. Crossbreeding is essential to maximize profits in the cattle business and these bulls will give you the added performance, meat and hair that will put your calves in the top cut pen come sale time. Feel free to give the consignors a call and stop and have a visit with them before sale day if you want a little extra time to meet the breeders and see their operations. Also, this year the sale will again be broadcast live on the internet at www.dlms.ca. If you can’t make the sale you can bid online. Please register early if you are going to take advantage of this service. Please come early sale day and enjoy viewing of the bulls and a complimentary lunch. If Candace or I can be of any assistance before the sale or on sale day, please don’t hesitate to give us a call. We would be happy to find you a bull that is right for your program and make your bull buying experience a pleasant one. Sincerely, Helge & Candace By

C2 Charolais • lots 1-20 Welcome to the Prairie Distinction Bull Sale. As I write this, it’s -27 C and calving is in full swing. To be in this business one has to truly love it, and I do! I believe there is a bright future in the cattle business for those willing to learn, adapt, and work. Using a Charolais bull is the first step to being profitable in the cattle industry! We are offering another strong set of yearling bulls with something for everyone. There are several bulls suitable for heifers, as well as stout performance bulls that your cows deserve. All the bulls this year are polled, with many testing homozygous polled. I’ve elected not to write footnotes for each bull. I’m finding how many times can I write “good bull”, without repeating myself? They are all good

bulls or they wouldn’t be offered for your purchase! Once again, the bulls are fed a corn silage based TMR. Our goal is to slowly develop these bulls, and have them work and last for you. Over feeding can hide flaws, and make impressive numbers, but if a bull doesn’t transfer those to his offspring, then what are we doing? Our bulls are fed for optimum development, not maximum gain. Predictable performance under realistic conditions. Please allow us to discuss your needs and help you select the right bull for your herd. Bulls can be viewed on the farm ahead of the sale or we will see you in Neepawa on March 27. ~ Jeff & Jackie Cavers

BIRTH WEIGHT & CALVING EASE University studies in Wyoming and data from Montana and Colorado lend credence to the following conclusions: 1. The birth weight itself influences calving ease by 65%. 2. The female has 60-70% influence on birth weight of her calf. 3. The bull has 30-40% influence on birth weight of his progeny. 4. Pelvic measurement and angle as well as the shape of the calf have 35-40% influence on calving ease. 5. Length of gestation greatly affects birth weight. A fetus can gain over one pound per day in the last days of gestation. 6. Weather and temperature the last 30 days affect the length of gestation. 7. Size and maturity of the cow influence calving ease. Most commercial producers do not take birth weights. Guessing is as inaccurate as driving with a broken speedometer – what’s thought to be 55 mph may in fact be 65 or 70 mph, and what’s thought to be 70-80 lb. may actually be 80-90 lb. Remember, everything is relevant. Increased growth, frame and performance will increase BW. A longer-bodied calf will weight more. If a calf is expected to have genetics for growth, it will display this prior to birth as well as after. As a rule of thumb, it takes a calf weighing 85 lb. at birth to finish at 1200-1250 lb. A cow should easily give birth to a calf weighing 8% of her own body weight. Thus a 1200 lb. cow should give birth to a 96 lb. calf with ease.

Continued selection for light birth weights will ultimately reduce the mature sizes and performance of your cattle.

4th Annual Prairie Distinction Bull Sale

Cattle laC Charolais • lots 21–27 Welcome to the 4th Prairie Distinction Bull Sale. The bulls have been brought along on a 14% pellet with free choice grass hay. They are housed in a pen with plenty of room for them to be “bulls”, ensuring proper development and plenty of exercise. They are raised with the commercial cattleman in mind; born easy, quick maturing, with tons of hair to withstand our Manitoba winters. At the end of the day, pounds pay, and I am confident these bulls can do the job. If you have any questions, or would like to come have a look, don’t hesitate to call. ~ Tyler

johnston Charolais • lots 39–48 Welcome all! Our herd calves on grass from June 1 to mid August with heifers starting a few weeks earlier. These bulls are usually weaned mid February and placed on a TMR corn silage ration with supplemented pellets until june. Until October they are offered grass with a pellet ration. They then go back on a TMR corn silage base ration with supplementation until sale. After the new year, we gradually increase energy and protein in the ration to get our sale bloom. They will still be athletic and have the ability to travel the larger pastures. Our 19 to 21 month old bulls are appreciated by customers for their ability to service the taller cow, more females and still maintain body condition as they have extra age and development. These guys are fully vaccinated and guaranteed. Please call with any questions, farm inspections are welcome and encouraged, as we would love to show you our program. ~ Scott

• Homozygous polled and Leptin TT tests are being done and will be displayed sale day. • Johnston Charolais reserves the right to in herd semen use on any bulls sold.

A perfectly footed, great moving bull, that passes it on to his sons. Big ribbed, docile daughters with amazing udder and teats. Another feature we feel has purebred herdsire quality. The name fits the bull! Very complete from a very functional dam that should be flushed. Denalli’s Whitecap Laredo dam was a high selling calf from the PerrotMartin dispersal. This moderate 1500 lb, beautifully uddered cow always has low birthweight calves that develop into top penmates. We think he is more then a heifer bull and could be bred to any cow on farm with satisfying results. Check him out!

Cowman Formula Increase in pounds per calf from a top performance bull X number of cows bred to him per year X number of years to keep the bull X expected selling price of calves = Additional dollars you can pay for a better bull Example: A bull who will add 30 lb to the weaning weight of each of his calves, mated to 25 cows per year for 4

years, and you sell his calves for $1 per pound. 30 lb x 25

jFC dieGo 600d

Dbl Pld PMC740662 JFC 600D April 04 2016 This long spined, larger framed, Chavez son was MERIT 7329T(P) acquired in dam. With the severe Alberta drought WINN MANS CHAVEZ 826Y(P) of 2015, we had the opportunity to purchase WINN MANS BREATHLESS 826U Springside Farms’ heifer calf crop, other than the ANCHOR NOBLEMAN 22W(QP) show string, as well as a few later calving cows. ANCHOR YVETTE 14Y(P) Diego’s dam is a feminine, heavy milking, 1700 lb ANCHOR TERESA 18T(P) cow with a very impressive Geddes heifer calf at side this year.

cows = 750 x 4 years = 3000 x $1/lb = $3000. This bull is worth $3000 more than the average bull who will keep your weaning weights the same. Take this formula and put your own figures in and see what you can afford to pay. This equation does not take into consideration the increase in value due to calving ease, higher quality replacement heifers, yearling growth, feedlot gain and improved carcass quality.

lej Charolais • lots 65–68 Hi everyone! For those that don’t know us, LEJ Charolais have been raising and selling Charolais for about 40 years. We are based out of Edwin, Manitoba. Our herd is a 50 percent traditional white herd and the other 50 percent is red factor. We added the red factor to enable us to provide bulls to our customers that would sire the market approved tan feeder calves. The entire family is involved in the breed, with Rae being the Manitoba Association secretary for many years and the boys being involved in 4H and the junior Charolais group. I am currently a proud director on the National Charolais Board after serving as a provincial director for a number of years. We strive to raise bulls that are sound, functional herd bulls that stand the test of time. I think we have presented to this sale some good examples of our genetics. Thanks for your interest and good luck with your purchases.

~Jim
