Manitoba Angus Association selects “Keen Grain & Livestock of Marquette, Mb” as their Commercial Producer for 2013 MAA President, Allan Nykoliation presents the Commercial Producer Award to Sandra and Martin Keen, Marquette, MB Keen Grain and Livestock is a mixed grain and beef operation transitioning into its 3rd generation at Marquette, Mb. The original farm was started in 1942 by Martin’s father, James Keen. Today the farm is being operated by Martin and Sandra Keen, along with 3 of their 4 children; daughter Sarah and her husband Pat ( who works off farm— they have one son and one on the way), son Jamie, who works full time on the farm and daughter Marci ( works off farm as an agronomist). Our other daughter Kelli and her husband are not involved in the farm. The farm maintains a herd of 400 plus commercial cows consisting of 300 Black Angus cows and 100 Limousin cross cows.

Photo courtesy of By Livestock As well it crops around 3500 acres of cereals and oilseeds, 300 acres of corn silage, soybeans and has 1500 acres of forage and pastureland. They try to maintain a fairly young herd of cows by retaining 75 head of heifer calves every year and culling fairly hard. If a cow doesn’t have a calf with her to go to pasture she is sold. Same thing goes for cows with anything less than almost perfect udders and feet. They retain the rest of their calves and background them until around 900 lbs which is usually mid- February ( 10 -11 months of age) when they are sold via off farm tender bid to finishing lots in either eastern or western Canada or some years the US. In addition to their own calves they buy and feed an additional 800-1000 feeder calves annually that usually come in at 500- 600lbs and are back grounded to 900lbs as well.

The cows remain in the respective age groups until they are 5. This helps to reduce competition and help manage the herd. This also helps with breeding and calving management. Calving starts in March with the replacement heifers, and followed by the second and third calvers 3 weeks later. Then following suit with the older cows calving mid April, where most years the weather can be more favourable and the cows are able to calve out on the pasture.

They feed a mixture of corn, alfalfa, and barley silage with the addition of either barley grain or screenings, or a screening pellet with added supplement. The cow herd receives about 50% of their total ration in dry forage, either a grass/alfalfa mix or an oat or barley green feed with the addition of the silage blend. The feeder cattle receive nearly 90% of the ration in the form of silage in the TMR and 10% of the TMR being dry forage mixed in the form of a tub ground grass, alfalfa, and straw mix.

They like the Angus breed for their operation because they are easy fleshing, easy keeping medium framed cattle. As cows they are well tempered and good mothers. Cows can raise good sized calves on good forage without sacrificing their own body condition on average years without having to supplement with creep feed. Over the last 10 years they have been purchasing 2 or 3 new bulls every year from Brookmore Angus for the heifers. The bulls fit well into their program for their heifers then are used to breed the older cows as 2 year olds.

As they go forward into the farm’s 3rd generation they hope to be able to continue to grow the operation and keep it as a family operation.

EDITOR’S LINK Lois McRae and Arlene Kirkpatrick Well it has been quite the winter so far! They say challenges builds character so Manitoba farmers should be an interesting group! The -40 to -50 wind chills were tough on the animals as well as their caretakers. However, as usual our tough Angus cows can handle it as good as any animal.

As 2014 begins we are seeing a high demand and good prices for feeder calves which hopefully helps give strength to the upcoming Bull Sales. This issue will introduce you to our 2014 Board of Directors. They are looking forward to a busy year. You will find the write-ups on the new directors as well as plans for this year’s activities throughout thisissue. We hope you enjoy our new colored cover which ads a different look to the Outlook. However, we have worked hard to provide the same consistent information important to the membership and commercial producers who subscribe to the newsletter.

MANITOBA ANGUS ASSOCIATION PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Allan Nykoliation Well as I sit down to write this report the weather has gone from -30 to 0 in 24 hours. The weather definitely has been challenging this winter especially for the brave people calving now!

On the positive side the cattle markets have opened up very strong in 2014 and building up steam, maybe even record setting prices! It’s about time, the cowboys that have endured the last decade of low prices and high inputs deserve every penny they get!

I would like to thank our retiring Canadian director Lois McRae for all her work. It’s been 16 years that she has served on the Manitoba board, that’s a long time to dedicate to our association. Thanks Lois.

I would also like to thank Bonnie Glasman and Naomi Best for their time and work on the board. This year we are welcoming 3 new board members Brett McRae, Nicholas Bray, and Raina Syrnyk (Junior Director).

Countdown to Showdown 2014 171 days left

In July 2014, the Manitoba Junior Angus Association is hosting the Canadian Junior Angus Showdown in Virden,July 17-19th.

As the Countdown begins, this issue we will inform you of the history of the Manitoba Junior Angus Association.

January 9, 1999 saw the birth of a brand new association in Manitoba, the Manitoba Junior Angus Association. Because the Angus breed has been strong the last few years, the formation of the MJAA seemed like the next logical step in the growth and development of the Angus breed.

The association’s first major project was to plan a summer show.

The Board of directors was established with Kaylen Williams as President; Kendra Thiry- Vice; Sec-Treas- Karla Williams and Adult Advisor- Tim

Baker .August 1, 1999 marked the first Junior Angus Show in Manitoba in Oak Lake , Manitoba.The event would include one day of competitions and then the 2nd day was the cattle show and finished with a Roast Beef supper.Feb 18, 1999 president Kaylen Williams flew to Calgary along with other juniors from across Canada. The purpose of the meeting was to gather youth from across Canada to see if there was a desire to set up a National Junior Angus Association. It was a unanimous decision that this was a necessary step to achieve growth in the Angus breed.The framework of the association along with mission statement, goals and three year plan was presented to the CAA board of directors. Plans were made to first have a national newsletter and in 2000 have the first Junior Show. The board of directors wanted to move the program forward so the juniors present were named the Canadian Junior Angus Association. Kaylen Williams was the Manitoba Director. The CJAA has never looked back since this venture.

August 1, 1999- the first ever Junior Angus Show was held in Oak Lake with 33 junior members and 50 head of cattle. The acceptance level with the parents and juniors was high and plans were made to have an annual Manitoba event. The junior weekend is not just a cattle weekend; there are competitions and learning workshops on marketing, showmanship, judging, scrapbook, photography, graphic design, sales talk and more.

August 2000- Show involved 36 juniors and 62 head of cattle.

2001- Royal Manitoba Winter Fair had a Junior Angus Show and a clinic was held at Mar Mac Farms for practice for the 2001 Showdown in Neepawa.

July 19-21, 2001- Manitoba juniors hosted the Second Annual Showdown. It was a three Day event packed full of competitions and activities. The weather was hot and humid, with a storm tossed in there too. A very successful event was achieved.Karla Williams, President; Jared Glasman- vice ; Amanda Kirkpatrick treas; and Melissa McRae secretary.

2002- Juniors started fund raising events such as Pie Sales at SW Bull Sale and purchasing heifer calves at the Keystone Klassic, breeding them and selling with all the proceeds going to the juniors as yearlings. This was more effective than selling tickets.

2003- Shari Beamish Pres; Matt Van Steelandt, Vice: Marie Kirkpatrick Sec; Brett McRae treas: Scott Simms Reporter; Advisor – Ken Williams Annual meetings were held in January with the Senior Association, the juniors enjoyed swimming and pizza following the event. Scrap booking days were held each year to keep the junior history in tact.Showdown 2003 was held in Olds Alberta, Seven Juniors from Manitoba traveled to Olds for the event. Kelsey Stewart,Jarret Pernarowski, Matt Van Steelandt, Brett McRae, Melissa McRae, Amanda Kirkpatrick and Marie Kirkpatrick. They all worked together with their heifers and won the Herdsman award. Their Cook-off theme was Red Green. Cook-off is always a favorite at any junior event where the juniors cook a steak and prepare the theme for the table and the plates.

The junior shows continue annually in Oak Lake until 2007 the last one was held. Due to the drop in numbers it was not financially feasible to have the event on its own.The Manitoba Junior Angus members joined Manitoba Youth Beef Roundup in Neepawa August long weekend for their annual Show and competitions along with learning workshops. This All Breeds Weekend has the Angus show separately but all the workshops are interbreed mixed.

The numbers of members dropped for a few years but now in 2013, the Manitoba Junior Association is up and running again with Raina Syrnyk as President. Contact Raina or Adult Advisor – Ken Williams if you would like some more information on the Junior Association.

MANITOBA ANGUS ASSOCIATION ANNUAL MEETING REPORT The Manitoba Angus Association held their Annual Meeting at the Victoria Inn on Jan. 4th.

It was another frigid day and may have helped contribute to a smaller attendance than usual. However, those attending the meeting enjoyed the presentation by Dr. Les Byers from Vegreville, AB about genetically enhanced epd’s. They also received lots of interesting information from the Canadian Angus Assoc. CEO Rob Smith, including a virtual tour of the new Canadian Angus Office in Calgary, “Angus Central”.

Lois McRae completes her 6 year term as Canadian Director in June at the National Angus Convention in Moose Jaw. She has served on the MB Angus Assoc. board for the past 12 years consecutively and several years prior to that. Lois was presented with a token of appreciation and thanked for all of her hard work in representing the Manitoba membership at the Canadian board level. Shawn Birmingham was elected by acclamation to be our new President Dallas Johnston presents Lois McRae Canadian Angus Director from Manitoba. He begins his term at the National Convention. with a token of appreciation .

Other new board members elected were Nicholas Bray from Eddystone, Brett McRae from Brandon and Raina Syrnyk (Junior Director) from Ethelbert, MB. Thanks to Bonnie Glasman and Naomi Best for their contributions on the board over the past two years.

The new Executive for 2014 was elected with Allan Nykoliation as President and Larissa Hamilton as Vice President. Arlene Kirkpatrick will continue as Secretary- Treasurer.

New Director—Brett McRae Together with my mom and dad, Blair and Lois McRae, we own and operate Mar Mac Farms. Our farm is located 15 minutes South West of Brandon, MB. We annually calve out 200+ head of purebred Black and Red Angus and Simmentals, and usually breed around 250 head each spring. I also do custom A.I. projects, and clip sale cattle all over Manitoba and Saskatchewan.

I have been heavily involved with the cattle industry, for as long as I can remember. I was one of the founding members of the MJAA, and served on the board of the CJAA. I bought my first angus cow (Mar Mac Sarah 25K) from Mom and Dad, and much of my Black Angus herd herd traces back to her.

This past December I more that doubled my Angus herd by purchasing a group of bred Black Angus heifers at the Johnston/ Fertile Valley “Opening the Vault” sale.

I am very excited for the future of the Angus breed, especially here in Manitoba. I believe that once the commercial cow herd finds its new size, there will be a strong demand for Angus bulls and replacement heifers.

New Director—Nicholas Bray Hello, I am Nicholas Bray and am currently wrapping up my last year of Animal Science at the University of Manitoba. My family’s farm is located 5 miles north of Eddystone, MB where we run a predominantly Angus influenced commercial herd using Angus bulls for the past 10 years. I also have my own small purebred herd that I am in the process of developing and expanding under the name NB Cattle Co. For as long as I can remember, I have been a 4H member and a Junior Angus member since 2006, showing purchased and home raised Angus females at various fairs over the past several years. The Royal Manitoba Winter Fair, MLE, MB Youth Beef Roundup and many summer fairs are some of shows I’ve attended. With Showdown occurring in Virden, MB this July, I encourage all Juniors to attend this monumental event for some friendly competition with fellow Angus enthusiasts from across the country. I look forward to working with the MB Angus Association and the opportunity to meet breeders within the province.

Hamco Cattle Co This year’s Honorary President is Jim Skelton from Reston, MB. Jim wins Keystone and his wife Dene (Lorna) have been married since December 1969.

Jim became involved with Angus cattle in the fall of 1968 when he travelled to the Toronto Royal with Ben Jackson to help him show Market Steers. It was there that he met Grant Wilson (Lenlook Angus), Innis Hodson (Rosebank Farms) and Larry Walker (Black Meadows Angus). These new acquaintances turned into lifelong friendships.

Since they had all had purebred Angus herd for many years they had a strong influence on Jim. Jim served on the Manitoba Angus board from 1992 – 1999. During his time on the Angus board one of the positions he held was to organize and develop the Angus feeder sales. This has since grown into a huge part of Angus promotion today. We thank him for his time served on the Manitoba Angus board.

Jim and his wife farmed north of Sinclair, MB until 2009 and then moved into Reston. He still takes and active part in the farm with his son Jason and they have about 100 Black Angus cows and continues to use Registered Black Angus bulls.

South West Bull Development Centre Celebrates 20th Anniversary!

The South West Bull Development Centre was first established in 1994 by a group of four Red Angus Breeders from Southwestern Manitoba. The first three years in the Development Centre consisted of Red Angus Bulls. The Hereford bulls joined in 1997 and the Black Bulls followed in 2000. This marks the 20th Anniversary for the South West Bull Development Centre. Bulls have come from Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and Ontario.

The first sale was held at Melita Auction Mart just outside of Melita, MB. Since then live sales have been held at the Bull Development Centre at Batho Farms Ltd at Oak Lake & Heartland Livestock in Virden. The 19th sale in the spring of 2013 took on a little different flavor with a video sale held in the Community Hall in Oak Lake. At the start-up South West bulls were to be developed on a ration designed for the bulls to gain 3lbs per day on a ration consisting of 50% roughage. This ration was developed and used at Batho Farms prior to the conception of South West. This ration allows the bulls to grow and develop with lots of room to roam, developing muscle and sound confirmation without being burdened with extra fat, preparing them for the breeding season just ahead of them. This same ration is still in place at South West. Bulls arrived at South West at the end of October for the start of the 20th year.

Supervised weighing will take place every 28 days. Bulls will be ultra sounded and semen tested in preparation for the 20th sale.

Bulls at SW this year consist of 36 Red Angus, 11 Black Angus and 4 Hereford, giving us a total of 51 bulls.

Red Angus consignors are McNeely Land & Cattle, Fraser Farms, James Mekkes, Nancy Howatt & Batho Farms.

Black Angus bulls are from Dylan Funk, Fraser Farms, AM Ranching & Batho Farms.

Hereford consignors are Tizhome Polled Herefords, McNeely Land & Cattle and AM Ranching.

Sale date for the 20th sale is April 12th, 2014 at Oak Lake Community Hall. This will be the 2nd Video Sale for the South West Bull Development Centre.

The Canadian Angus Association congratulates the winners and thanks all who participated in the Gold Show program in 2013. The Gold Show program was developed in 1989 by the Canadian Angus Association to provide an incentive for breeders to move between regions to show cattle. Gold Show winners are determined by the animal(s) that earned the highest number of points in three Gold Shows. If an animal accumulated points in more than three Gold Shows, the points from their best three shows were used in determining end-of-year awards.

Highlights of 2013…

Anyone who knows me very well knows I’m ALL ABOUT the lists! And ‘year end’ is the greatest time of the year for the creation of lists! So, to mimic David Letterman, here is my ‘take’ on the Top 20 Greatest Accomplishments of your CAA in 2013:

7) Continued growth of the Canadian Angus Foundation; Building the Legacy; fundraising ‘tie-in’ with Angus Central and program platform.

20) Well-received changes to Gold Show points system and announcement / presentation of awards.

5) Registrations of Canadian Angus cattle remain constant with 2012 almost record number.

19) Increased number of cattle being shown again in 2013 through the national Gold Show program.

In 2013 there were 1426 head through the show ring which represents a 3% increase in show cattle over 2012.

4) Responding to our membership and creating faster, electronic-based communication to expedite member services.

Construction and Official Opening of Angus Central Because we are or now have: Room to move, serve and grow; Opportunity to display our history; Showcase outstanding sponsors, volunteers, personalities, breed builders and genetic contributors; Ahead of schedule and $150,000 under budget; In a structure that folks seem to find comfortable and conducive to doing international Angus business.

With accomplishments and achievements, however, there are always disappointments and we had a few of those in 2013 as well. Not a lot, but some. These would include ILR-LIVE, which is not as ready from ABRI as we think it needs to be to ‘launch’ it for our membership. Right now I will say this is ‘on hold’ indefinitely. I’m not sure 2014 will bring about the programming changes it needs to make it work better, but we will continue working with ABRI to accommodate this request from our Board.

To be selected to represent Canada in New Zealand was one honour, but to be named The 2013 PGG Wrightson World Angus Forum Champion Team is whole new level of honor that I never thought I would get to feel! I am truly grateful for the Canadian Angus Association and Foundation for giving me this opportunity.

The competition was a week long event held on the north island, there was ten teams of four members on each team from Canada, The United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand. Each team was provided with four heifers from different farms from all over the country. It was an interesting first day with all the rain, green grass and some not so halter broke heifers.

There was the basic cattle competitions that you would expect to see such as judging, showmanship etc., but that wasn’t all the Kiwi’s had is store for us. In our teams we had to calibrate a spreader and drill, drench and sort sheep, run an RFID scanner, operate equipment and even come up with a feed budget.

My favorite competition of the week was the “Agrinightmare”.

We had one hour to complete a course of chopping wood, building a fence, hanging a gate, deboning a beef, putting together a waterer and building a fire to finish the race. It was an intense skill testing hour that showed our real team work.

When not competing the teams took part in the regular forum activities of speakers and visiting with other delegates.

The forum was just a start to a two month journey around the country for me. I was lucky enough to be able to tour around the North and South Island visiting many farms, observing sheep, dairy and beef operations. I also participated in the Canterbury A &P Show, the largest show in New Zealand with 200 head. There was I was named Champion Overall Handler (showman), another great honor in my books.

All cattle are grass fed to finish and are extremely sound and structurally correct to aid in getting around the steep hill country that is most of the landscape. New Zealand is a beautiful country and full of wonderful hospitable people, if you have get a chance to go, take it.

What an amazing experience is all I can say. It was the fastest 10 days of my life and I would do it all again in a second. The people were incredibly welcoming, the views were second to none, the competition was one of a kind, and ‘Tea’ every three hours had its perks too!

During the competition all 40 competitors and the handful of coordinators stayed in a hostel in Rotorua, New Zealand. Five minutes after we arrived from our 30 hour journey we were convinced by the other delegates to go on a luge ride. We all opted to skip out on the shower and head to the luge; what a great way to start the week! From then on the trip just seemed to speed by. Everyone was there to talk cattle, meet new people, and try their best in the competition.

When we picked up our heifers the next day (in the mud and the rain), there were plenty of runaways and laughs to be had. During heifer prep all the different countries were keen to learn how animals were clipped and showed differently. The coordinators were just as much fun as the other delegates so there were plenty of laughs even during the competition and training. When it came to digging post holes we tried convincing the organizers to invest in some augers and when it came time to put up high tensile fence we tried convince them of barbed wire. We were all impressed when Stacey was able back a boat in on her first try (remember the steering wheel on the left side)!

Little trackhoes were used to dunk basketballs, pancakes were made, sheep were drenched, water systems were assembled, and fires were started (while somewhat anyways) just to name a few of the fun modules we competed in.

We attended a few banquets and speakers and were able to visit with the delegates attending the World Angus Forum.

Every evening ended the same way: fines and hanging out in the hostel. The trip wrapped up with the Adrenaline tour where the Canadians and UK delegates took in some site seeing, fun activities, and visited a few farms.

Manitoba Junior Angus Report - submitted by Raina Syrnyk Hello everyone, I hope your calving season and winter is going well. My name is Raina Syrnyk and I am the junior director of the Manitoba Angus Association. My growing interest in cattle and the Angus breed has influenced me to take on this role. I am currently building an Angus herd located near Ethelbert, Manitoba on my dad's mixed grain and cattle farm. I have actively shown Angus females across the Prairie provinces for the past few years, having the opportunity to make it to Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta's junior Angus shows this past summer.

Just a reminder that the upcoming Manitoba junior Angus show is at the Royal Manitoba Winter Fair in Brandon, Manitoba. The Winter fair dates are March 31-April 5, 2014 and the deadline to enter is February 26, 2014.

Showdown is being held in Virden, Manitoba this summer from July 17-19, 2014 and is a great event for any junior to attend. Keep in mind that you do not need animals to attend Showdown and that you can also show angus influenced females and steer projects. This show includes a lot of exciting events and is a great opportunity to make friends and connections with other young individuals from across the provinces. For more information on Showdown or other opportunities make sure to check out the CJAA website at http://juniors.cdnangus.ca/ . Any juniors with an interest in the Angus breed are encouraged to join the CJAA for $10.50. There are many great events, trips, and scholarships offered by the CJAA to its members.

This December may have been the second coldest since 1893, but the anticipation for Showdown has been heating up. Judges and entertainment have been booked and show calves have been born in preparation for one of the largest national junior shows in the country. Manitoba will host the Canadian Junior Angus Association for the third time in the city of Virden from July 17th to 19th. This event will be full of exhilarating competitions, events, and entertainment.

With this said, I challenge each and every Angus breeder of Manitoba to send their best to Showdown. Some of you have children that are too old to compete in Showdown and this creates a wonderful opportunity to introduce a young 4-H member to the CJAA. Please look at those in your community who might be raising commercial 4-H heifers and take them under your wing. Whether it is encouraging them to participate in Showdown with their 4-H project, without cattle or by borrowing one of your show animals. What an excellent opportunity to be a mentor to a young person and to have your genetics showcased in a national event as prestigious as Showdown.

Canadian Angus Director Report 2013 was a year the members of the Canadian Angus Association will never forget. The accomplishments and improvements to the Association reached far above many expectations.

The highlights of the Canadian Angus Year: - The board of directors selected a new clean fresh logo for the association.

- Three summer interns promoted Angus cattle around the country. Karla Ness attended the Manitoba Youth Beef Roundup in Manitoba - The annual convention was well attended in Guelph, Ontario. The convention was full of educational workshops, and hands on working sessions. Rancher Endorsed Day entailed touring feedlots ,a panel on marketing and their operations.

- The Foundation Legacy Sale brought in $ 70,800.00 for the Canadian Angus Foundation.

This money is used for archives, juniors and breed development projects.

- Canadian Junior Angus Showdown in BC a success and in 2014 Manitoba will host Showdown in Virden.

- Social Media has advanced and evolves daily with Facebook, Twitter, E-news and our website. Go to the website and view the links to Agribiton, the National Show, New Zealand World Angus Forum and more.

- A new genetic condition policy was created and well accepted by the membership - DNA testing video (on You Tube) is a new tool for breeders that demonstrate the correct procedures with parentage DNA deadlines coming closer, breeders have to be aware and use the correct methods of collecting the samples.

- A delegation of 12 Juniors selected by applications from across Canada represented us in the First ever junior challenge at the World Angus Forum in New Zealand. They excelled by being the1st and 2nd place teams and won the overall judging competition.

These juniors will be future leaders of our Association and are a real asset to our breed. Around 25 other Canadians attended the Forum and were well respected in the international community.

- For the first time at Agribition, the All Star Team and Gold Show winners were announced and the awards presented just before the Power of Perfection Sale. A great way to showcase the Angus cattle from across Canada.

- The Canadian Angus Foundation has set up an outline for numerous projects for our Junior members example â&#x20AC;&#x201C; scholarships, travel bursaries to GOAL and for more see the Foundation website for details.

- A new supply store the A store was developed for promotional items. We have no inventory so takes a little longer to order in but excellent top quality items. Check out the web site.

- The new building comes in $ 150,000.00 under budget !!!!

Some of the highlights of my 16 years are: -Being part of the board when the motion was made to start the Keystone Klassic Sale -History Committee Chair for the 100th Anniversary of Angus in Brandon 2005 Canadian Annual Meetings.

-Hosting the Showdown and Canadian Angus Association Annual Meetings together in 2005 in Brandon.

-One of the organizers who attended and was part of the Manitoba Display at the World Angus Forum in 2009 -On the Board when the decision was made to have a separate Black Angus and Red Angus Show at Manitoba Livestock Expo to send 4 winners to the Royal Bank Challenge at Agribition.

-Committees I served on were Advertising and Promotion, Fall Gold Show, Tours, Brandon Bull Sale, Junior, Feeder Sale, and Keystone Klassic Sale.

- A strong supporter of the Junior Angus Program in the Province.

- Committee member on the Annual Meetings held in Manitoba in 1995, 2005 and 2011 and two National shows in 1999 and 2011.

- 7 years as Co editor of the Manitoba Angus Outlook People make these Associations and the fellowship and knowledge learned from each Board member makes the adventure as a director an exciting one. If you get the opportunity to be a director take it, the education of the breed and its operations along with the Angus fellowship is very inspiring.This is just a few of the highlights and I would personally like to thank all of the Board members , and secretaries over the past 16 years for their dedicated volunteer time to promote the Angus Breed in Manitoba and the fellowship of the Angus Breeders.

One of the Canadian highlights will always be the opening of the Canadian Angus Office in Calgary December 11, 2013. This is your building as members of the Association and you should be very proud of it. This asset will grow in value everyday with the prime location at Balzac and is a Showcase of the Angus Breed in Canada.

This is the end of my term as your Canadian Angus Director. I appreciate the confidence you have put in myself to represent your province and breed. I have devoted my energy to making the decisions on the board which I hope will help to advance this great breed ANGUS. I am very proud of the new office and other accomplishments made in the CAA in the past six years. We have a dedicated hard working staff led by a progressive thinking CEO (Rob Smith) who all have the vision to move the Angus breed forward in the future. This ends 16 years as a director on the Manitoba and Canadian Angus Board, I appreciate all the support in the past and look forward to new things in the future. I will be continuing on as co-editor of the Manitoba Angus Outlook.

Brookmore Angus Awarded Manitoba Angus Purebred Breeder for 2013 Jack & Barb Hart from Brookdale, MB have been raising registered Black Angus cattle since 1976. They changed their breeding plans at Brookmore Angus in 1986, when they decided to build and improve the herd by using AI genetics. This decision allowed them to use semen of a variety of the best proven bulls available. Today they continue to use AI extensively and the pedigrees of many of their females contain several generations of well recognized bulls in the Angus breed. In 2013 they calved out 300 head.

In the 1980’s and early 90’s, Jack volunteered for 17 years on the Manitoba Angus board of Directors, serving several years as president.

While Jack’s responsibilities include all of the AI work, Barb also works full time on the farm. She does all the bookkeeping and takes care of the heat detection in the spring while Jack is breeding cows. While they do much of the work themselves they also have hired help.

Brookmore Angus has promoted and sold both bulls and females for breeding stock.

They began selling bulls at Douglas, Roblin & Gunton bull test stations and Brandon Bull Sale. More recently this is the 19th year they have sold bulls through the Cattleman’s Connection Bull Sale. From this sale they have sold bulls across Manitoba and into Saskatchewan, Alberta, Ontario, Quebec and North Dakota.

In the past they have also sold females into every province in Canada except the Maritimes as well as England, Scotland, Japan Russia and Kazakhstan.

Presently they market their females through the Keystone Klassic Sale in Brandon, the Seriously Black Sale near Sylvan Lake, Alberta and by private treaty at the farm.

The offspring of many of the Brookmore animals have gone on to do well in the show ring. Progeny are showing up more frequently at shows and sales across Canada. Most recently the Grand Champion female at the MB Angus 2013 summer show was purchased from Brookmore Angus. Also this year, the Reserve Grand Champion Black Angus Female at Agribition, shown by Remitall Cattle Co. was out of a Brookmore cow.

The Manitoba Angus Association is very proud of the job Jack & Barb have done promoting their Manitoba cattle, and therefore feel they are a good choice to be named The Manitoba Angus Purebred Breeder for 2013.

Canadian Beef Breeds Council Report Submitted by Michael Latimer- CBBC Executive Director

Many purebred cattle producers don’t know that much about the Canadian Beef Breeds Council (CBBC), which is understandable given the fact that there has been more direct interaction with respective breed associations than with producers. CBBC was established in 1994 to act as a unified voice of the purebred cattle industry and promote Canadian purebred beef genetics domestically and internationally. Today, CBBC represents the interest of 18 purebred beef breed Associations as well as several of Canada’s top export companies and major exhibitions. The top priorities of CBBC are government and industry advocacy, market access for live cattle and genetics, and scientific advancement for the beef cattle industry. CBBC representatives have attended events around the world promoting the integrity of Canadian genetics and why Canada is the best place in the world to do business.

CBBC currently represents the interests of the purebred cattle industry at the Canadian Cattlemen Association (CCA), Canadian Cattle Identification Agency (CCIA), Beef Improvement Federation (BIF), Canadian Livestock Genetics Association (CLGA) and Canadian Animal Health Coalition meetings. We work closely with federal and provincial governments and are active in committee and round-table discussions. This advocacy is important for purebred producers for many reasons. Purebred producers are small in number, but as we all know, play a vital role in the beef cattle production system. The genetic base for Canada’s national herd starts with purebred cattle and that perspective needs to be heard or it is easily forgotten.

In developing foreign markets for purebred cattle, CBBC does not work alone. It is a combined effort of breeders, exporters, livestock exhibitions (domestic and international), government officials, industry organizations and breed associations. As part of its government advocacy efforts, CBBC has historically been very successful in obtaining financial assistance that is used to support those involved in creating more value for Canadian genetics. This is an ongoing effort that will continue for the foreseeable future.

CBBC is actively working with Livestock Gentec (a division of the University of Alberta) on several initiatives that will ensure the beef cattle industry remains competitive from a scientific and technological perspective with other animal protein industries. This includes identifying key areas of research that are relevant to the purebred industry as well as assisting producers who wish to apply new technologies. Understanding and incorporating Genomic information into everyday management is both a challenge and an opportunity for the beef industry. If managed correctly, it will provide Canada and its producers, with a distinct competitive advantage.

Manitoba Youth Win Purebred Heifers

In the past seven years 18 Manitoba youth have been awarded up to $2,000 toward the purchase of a heifer calf selected from a Manitoba purebred sale. The funds have come from the Grant Moffat Herdbuilder Fund. The youth submitted essays on why they wanted to start or build their own purebred herd of cattle and were picked by a committee of six of Grantâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s friends and family representing many breeds. The participants were evaluated on desire, need and previous expression of interest in the industry.

This year the committee combed through 17 excellent entries to pick the three final winners.

Bennett Foster, a 14 year old from Dropmore purchased a Hereford heifer to start his purebred herd. Andria Bertram, a 12 year old from Portage la Prairie purchased a Simmental heifer for her new herd and Wyatt Inglis, an 11 year old from Rapid City selected a Shorthorn heifer for his herd builder.

Grant Moffat, Holmsyde Charolais, Forrest, went missing in August, 2006. The funds generously donated by cattlemen, friends and relatives across the country were offered as a reward for tips leading to his whereabouts. After a year, a committee handling the funds made a decision to channel the money to Manitoba youth for the purpose of starting their own purebred herd.

More funds were raised at auctions during a couple of Manitoba Beef Producerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Annual Meetings 2010 & 2011 making it possible to continue this worthwhile cause in his memory.

The Provincial Exhibition of Manitoba Hires New General Manager

Updates to the CAA Genetic Evaluation Submitted by Kajal Devani

Starting in February 2014, CAA will be implementing a new procedure for integrating genomic data from HD 50K tests into CAA genetic evaluations. This new procedure will allow CAA to report genomicallyenhanced EPDs (GE-EPD) on a routine basis between the semi-annual official runs. CAA breeders will gain faster access to the benefits of genomic technologies combined directly with what we already know about tested animals from pedigree, performance, and progeny data. In order to access timely results, producers should get their samples submitted early to ensure that they can gain access to GE-EPDs powered by HD 50K as soon as the new estimation methods are available through CAA. Testing prior to March also ensures access to the special $55 price on HD 50K through Zoetis, CAA, Genserve, Livestoc Gentec, and ALMA.

Rob O’Connor will be joining the Provincial Ex team in the capacity of General Manager as of February 17th, 2014. The selection committee is confident that Rob’s experience and agricultural background will serve him well in his position. In his previous position as Manager of Canada’s Farm Progress Show in Regina, he has been extremely successful in growing the show, attracting national and international participation, and quadrupling the sponsorship!

Rob’s Background: Rob holds an Agricultural Business Diploma from the University of Guelph and spent a few years working as an Animal Feed Sales Consultant before joining the Regina Exhibition Association as a coordinator in 2001. In 2003, he was promoted to the Show Manager of Canada's Farm Progress Show. For the last 10 years, Rob has been responsible for the general management and sales of this show. This trade show is 2 million square feet in size, includes 813 exhibitors and attracts over 45,000 people over 3 days. Rob's top three responsibilities are to generate sales, show delivery, and to grow the show's reputation. In that capacity, the exhibits coordinator, international business coordinator and customer relations coordinator all report to Rob, as well as 75 volunteers. Rob is active in his community and has a considerable amount of experience working on Boards. He is a Hereford breeder with a large herd of purebred cattle.

Official Opening of Angus Central December 12, 2013: for immediate release

Rocky View County, AB — After three years of planning and preparation, the Canadian Angus Association (CAA) officially opened their first member-owned national headquarters, Angus Central. While the Association moved to many provinces, Angus Central, located just north of Calgary, is the first building owned by the Association. More than 200 Angus members, vendors to the Association and industry partners were in attendance as the doors opened to this exciting new building. An official ribbon cutting by the CAA Board of Directors was a highlight. All past presidents in attendance also shared a special photo representing the historical development of the breed coupled with their futuristic vision of maintaining the Association in a financial situation to purchase such a property.

“One of the policies that the Boards before us established was a fund for rainy days or a building,” said David Bolduc, past president of the CAA. “I think those people deserve most of the credit for this building we now have today. My board purchased the land for Angus Central, but without that initial governance policy to set that money aside, we wouldn’t be opening this today. It’s easy to have a vision of the future when you are standing on the shoulders’ of titans.”

Junior members along with families representing more than 100 years of raising Angus cattle were present representing provinces coast to coast. The new showcase of Angus history featured years of artifacts which make up the breed’s past, including letters from the Queen Mother, certificate seals decades old, herd books from more than 100 years ago, and much more.

Current CAA President Kevin Blair summarized the future of the Angus breed as being all about the youth. He asked those in attendance “Who is going to back fill behind the older generation as they retire in the next five to 10 years?”

“I want us to embrace and encourage our youth by supporting them financially and mentally,” said Blair. “So, here’s to our future. Welcome to Angus Central.”

The Canadian Angus Foundation (CAF) was established in 1992 under the presidency of Bill Jackson. Through his leadership, Doug Fee, past CAA CEO and current CAF chairman, credits the board for creating the charitable arm of the Association. “We have an opportunity to celebrate the history and foundation of the Angus breed in Canada and now we have a centre in which to do so,” said Fee. The CAF launched three new initiatives during the official opening to assist in financially building a stronger Foundation. Angus Roots includes an iron tree with leaves engraved with donors’ names. The Hall of Honour and The Breeders’ Choice feature silhouettes of people and animals to recognize highly respected breed builders or loved ones and standouts, respectively.

More than $14,000 was raised during the official opening.

“We have created membership equity through this building where in the past rent has been a significant portion of our budget,” said Rob Smith, CAA CEO. “I want to summarize the official opening in two words — home run.”
