It’s early October and most of the harvest in Western Canada is wrapping up with mainly corn being the only crop left to be harvested across Canada. The crops and feed situation ended up way better than it looked like it would in July, with many areas receiving plenty of moisture since then. The moisture situation next spring should be very good for most to get the grass and hay going. The commercial calf run is getting rolling with the prices down from the highs of six months ago but still looking like they will be very good. The word I am hearing from some of the auction markets is that quality will play a bigger roll with the uncertainties in the market place. Quality should always win but there are times that we just don’t see a big enough premium for the front end cattle. The first purebred female sale of the fall was in Quebec and was very positive, with lots of interest from right across Canada and cattle selling into six provinces. There are only a few female sales in Ontario and six in Western Canada this fall, so there are not as many numbers selling and only one dispersal. The quality is high and the interest is strong so it will make for a very nice fall. I know there are many culling harder and adding a top end one or two to their programs with the feed situations in some areas. You can never go wrong increasing the quality of your herd. The show season is upon us now too, and again, I would encourage you all to come out and support the producers who are being the promoters for the breed and see the progeny of some new bulls in the industry. Comparing different genetics and programs is just part of shows with the networking of 6

breeders a very important part. Candace was at a conference with a mainly urban audience and the discussion got into agriculture needing to be more sustainable and how farmers aren’t doing enough for the environment, etc. These people that know very little, if anything, about agriculture are planning to have a conference on earth friendly sustainability. Speaking up in defence of the industry opened a door to providing more information. They were shocked to hear the stats she shared and wanted better and more information. We are working on putting together information on urban sustainability to send this orgnization in an attempt to get urbanites to take more responsibility on this subject. Maybe it is time the industry started to redirect the focus to the largest part of the population's lifestyle choices that affect the environment. It seems agriculture is always on the defence, maybe it's time for a strong offence. Many of these people want to be pro-active and do the right thing, they just aren't getting good information to follow. They follow the biggest mouth, which is often based on poor or no science. Some statistics that we found from the U.S.A. are quite interesting. Getting food to our tables eats up 10 percent of the total U.S. energy budget, uses 50 percent of U.S. land, and swallows 80 percent of freshwater consumed in the United States. Yet, 40 percent of food in the United States today goes uneaten. That is more than 20 pounds of food per person every month, a shocking waste of resources. It is like the GMO debate where many people do not understand what GMO stands for or how it has benefited so much production of so many crops and the environment. But unfortunately the vocal uninformed seem to be winning much of the discussion with science not being the Charolais Banner • October 2015

main source of information. Emotion wins over common sense it seems. Social media has so much discussion on these topics and sometimes we need to answer back with comments on how everyone can do their part and not to just always point the finger at the farmer. Speaking of social media I thought Ted Serhienko made an excellent point in his last Herefords Today editorial “Communications in the past decade are the biggest change. The wireless age has added an ease to communication. Facebook, YouTube, Twitter and the likes can provide instant information but in virtually all cases this communication is not long lasting. Hence the comment, ”Yeah, I think I saw something on Facebook.” Although the wireless age is awesome, cowboys still like to have something in their hands to read!” I enjoy gathering lots of very useful information from Twitter, Instagram, etc. and am glad to see many Charolais breeders using it for marketing purposes. These can be very efficient for quick updates or reminders but unless you have all of your customers following you, the messages aren’t reaching their full potential. The next World Congress is in Mexico and this will be a great event that we got a glimpse of in a promotional video in France. It will be held in the centre of Mexico in the province of Jalisco with time in the city of Guadalajara. It will run from April 15th to 24th so start thinking about it now as time goes quickly and you won’t want to miss it. There is an ad in this issue and a link to their website with complete details. Nous sommes au début d’octobre et les récoltes dans l’ouest canadien sont pratiquement terminé seul le maïs reste à récolter. La situation qui primait en juillet, c’est beaucoup amélioré, on a eu beaucoup d’humidité depuis, ce qui a aidé pour les cultures et les aliments pour le bétail. Le temps sec à fait place à l’humidité ce qui sera bon pour les récoltes et pacage printemps prochain. Le veau d’embouche a connu une baisse de prix par rapport aux sommets d’il y a six mois, mais il y a une bonne demande et les prix resteront bons. Ce que les Marchés d’Animaux nous disent, est que la qualité va jouer beaucoup sur les prix. La qualité sera toujours gagnante, ce que nous ne voyons pas toujours. La première vente de femelles de race pure a débuté au Quebec et a été très positive, et démontré beaucoup d’intérêt, car des femelles ont été vendues dans six provinces. Il y a quelques ventes de femelles en Ontario et six dans l’ouest Canadien cet automne, donc il y a peu de ventes et seulement une de dispersion. La qualité est élevée et l’intérêt est fort pour les bons animaux. Je sais qu’il y a eu beaucoup d’animaux réformés, du a des situations causé par la sécheresse dans certaines régions. Donc vous ne pouvez jamais vous tromper en augmentant la qualité de votre troupeau. La saison des expositions est arrivée et je vous encourage fortement à les visiter, et de vérifier la descendance des nouveaux taureaux dans l’industrie. La comparaison de la génétique est une partie très importante d’une exposition, mais le contact avec les

éleveurs est la partie la plus importante. Candace assistait à une conférence composé uniquement de public urbain, qui discutait sur la durabilité et disait que les agriculteurs devraient en faire plus pour l’environnement. Ces personnes en connaissaient peu, sinon rien à propos de l’agriculture et organisaient des rencontres des amis de la terre. Ila parlaient pour la défense de l’industrie et ils ont ouvert une porte à l’information. Ils ont été choqué d’entendre les statistiques sur des informations qu’ils partagent. Nous travaillons sur la durabilité urbaine, et aider les citadins à prendre conscience et a avoir plus de responsabilité à ce sujet. Il est peutêtre temps que l’industrie dirige son focus sur le choix de vie de la population qui affectent l’environnement. Beaucoup de gens veulent être pro- actif et faire la bonne chose, mais ne reçoivent pas la bonne information. Ils écoutent des placotages souvent basé sur des faits non scientifiques. Quelques statistiques que nous avons trouvées du côté des USA sont tout à fait intéressantes. La nourriture que nous consommons coûte 10% du budget total de l’énergie des USA et utilise 50% des terres, et avale 80% de l’eau consommé aux USA. Pourtant 40% des aliments aux USA est gaspillés. Plus de 20 livres d’aliments par personne par mois sont gaspillé. C’est comme le débat sur les OGM beaucoup de gens ne comprennent pas ce que signifie OGM ou comment il a bénéficié à la production des cultures et de l’environnement. Mais malheureusement la désinformation par le bouche à bouche l’a emporté sur le côté science. Souvent l’émotion l’emporte sur le bon sens. Les médias sociaux ont beaucoup de discutions sur ces sujets, et parfois nous avons besoin d’intervenir pour rectifier

certains commentaires et leur démontrer qu’il ne faut pas toujours pointer du doigt l’agriculture. Parlant de média sociaux je pensais a Ted Serhienko qui a soulevé un excellent point dans son dernier éditorial dans (Hereford Today) dans la dernière décennie, il y a eu de très grands changements, l’ère du sans fil a ajouté une facilité de communication, Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, peuvent fournir des informations instantanés, mais dans pratiquement tous les cas ces communications ne sont pas de longue durée. D’où le commentaire j’ai vu quelque chose sur Facebook. Bien que l’ère du sans fil est génial, les cowboys aiment toujours avoir quelque chose dans leurs mains pour le lire. Il y a beaucoup d’informations très utiles à recueillir sur ces réseaux et je suis heureux de voir de nombreux éleveurs Charolais l’utiliser à des fins de marketing. Ceux-ci peuvent être très efficaces pour des mises à jour ou des rappels rapides, mais pour rejoindre vos clients ces messages n’atteindrons pas leur plein potentiel. Le prochain Congrès Mondial se tiendra au Mexique et ce sera un grand évènement, nous en avons eu un aperçu sur un vidéo promotionnel lors de notre voyage en France. Il aura lieu dans le centre du Mexique, dans la province de Jalisco dans la ville de Guadalajara. Il se déroulera du 15 avril au 24 avril donc commencé à y penser car le temps passe très vite et c’est un évènement à ne pas manquer. The beef business is booming; but that’s not news to anyone! Charolais sales last fall and this spring were superior with record highs. At the yards, it doesn’t matter whether you’re selling heifers, steers or culls; prices are at levels that yield profit. This summer we were fortunate to host delegates from across the globe for the World Charolais Technical Conference. It was clear through the enthusiasm and interest that our Canadian genetics are sought after because they are of the highest quality. If you’re interested in a cattle oriented tour, consider saving the date for the 2016 World Charolais Congress hosted by Mexico, April 15-24, 2016. Further information will be posted at www.charolais.com as details become available. Not only is there interest from around the globe in what the Charolais herd in Canada has to offer but also with the youth, right here at home! The annual Canadian Charolais Youth Association (CCYA) Conference and Show held in Yorkton, SK had a strong attendance exceeding that of the last few years. Youth, cattle and enthusiasm were a plenty – there were even young recruits from other breeds joining in on the excitement that Charolais has to offer! You can support the CCYA by participating in their Semen Auction being held at Agribition this year.The auction is organized by the National CCYA Board with semen from industry leading bulls being sold and the profits going back to provide youth scholarships and other various activities. There’s no shortage of sales this fall.The quality runs deep and regardless of your operation, there is something for everyone. Superior genetics will be on display and available at various shows and sales with the Canadian National Charolais Show and Sale November 26 & 27 at Canadian Western Agribition, Regina SK. At the Association, we’re on the upward trend of active breeding females. It’s an exciting time to be in the Charolais

business. Your CCA Board of Directors are meeting in October and we’ll have a more in depth update on Association news and happenings in the December Banner. UPCOMING CCA DATES TO REMEMBER Weaning Data Deadline – October 31, 2015. Submit your weaning data ASAP to ensure you’re included in the upcoming EPD Evaluation. As producers, please continue to contribute your performance data, we must maintain an accurate database to ensure positive breed improvements. CCA Scholarship Deadline – October 31 annually. Are you involved in agriculture and registered in a postsecondary education program? Do you or your family use Charolais bulls? Submit your completed application to the CCA Office by October 31 to be considered for one of three available scholarships totalling $3500. Application forms are available at www.charolais.com/association/scholarships Information will be arriving in your mailbox late November for 2016 Whole Herd Enrollment. Please review and have your females enrolled by January 1, 2016. Annual CCA Membership fees are also due January 1, 2016. The key to a solid DNA result is to start with a quality sample. It’s never too early to do a DNA test, but unfortunately it can be too late. Please request your DNA forms from the CCA Office. When submitting your samples it’s best to have a minimum 65 hairs per animal and each sample clearly identified. No rush results can be guaranteed; DNA sample results can take up to four weeks to receive. As a reminder and in reference to our CCA By-Laws: • Walking sires must have DNA on file • AI sires must be Parent Verified (Sire and Dam) • All Full French animals must be Parent Verified • ET calves must be Parent Verified • Donor Dams must have DNA on file

Contemporary Grouping Sean McGrath

An only child is always the best in their family at everything. The challenge is that they are also the worst. As soon as a sibling comes along, one is bigger, or smaller or better at math or more athletic. The same is true with cattle, and we can use this principal to determine genetic differences. EPD are all about comparisons. If there are two or more animals that are the same sex and are managed in the same way throughout their lifetime, their differences can be compared and used to calculate an EPD. Any animal is the result of their genotype or genetics, interacting with the environment. What we see or weigh is the phenotype. The equation we use to refer to this is: P (phenotype) = G (Genotype) x E (Environment) If animals are raised in the same environment (E) then the differences we see/measure are mostly due to Genotype (G). The actual EPD calculation is quite a bit more involved than this, but this is the basic premise. The goal when reporting data is to try to make sure that the cattle with the same environmental opportunity are grouped together. Some cattle are bigger, or faster growing or easier calving or easier keeping or more fertile than others. The challenge is that we can’t compare animals raised in isolation or without the same opportunities. Animals that are raised in the same way and can be directly compared are considered a contemporary group. The word comparison, by definition implies that we require at least 2 animals raised in the same manner. This is the smallest contemporary group that can be used for genetic evaluation. One animal will be bigger, or faster or more advanced than the other. As the groups get larger, more information can be determined. It is one thing to be the valedictorian in a class of 2, but in a class of 100 or more 14

it is generally a greater achievement. Again, the same is true with cattle. The ability to compare larger numbers of animals provides a better idea of where an animal fits in the grand scheme of things. When completing forms, it is not necessary to identify/separate animals into age groups or by sex. It is extremely important to accurately define animals by differences in management. For example, if early calving cows are calved in a corral and later cows out on pasture you may wish to identify calves as group 1 (corral) and group 2 (pasture). Or if calves are raised differently preweaning, the groups should be identified separately. Perhaps the best example would be if one group of calves had creep feed and another group did not. The computer will then further subdivide these groups by sex and age, and will apply various adjustments based on age of dam and whether or not the calves were creep fed. The really important thing about contemporary grouping is the comparisons. If there are no differences, then the contemporary group is what we call non-informative and the data would not be included in the genetic evaluation. As an example, let’s consider the 205 day adjusted weaning weights on 3 bull calves (A, B, C) in the same group, and let’s assume that all of them are 700 pounds. This is a non-informative group as it provides no information

about which calves have greater genetics for growth. A is not bigger or smaller than B or C. We can’t obtain any information about which calf has “more” or “less” growth. The most common example of this is calving ease scores. If all the heifers in a calving group calve without assistance, there is no way to use that data to determine which is “easier” calving than the others. To predict calving ease differences we therefore have to use other related information such as which calves are born lighter, or with a shorter gestation, than others. One of the other important considerations with a contemporary grouping is that over time it can only get smaller, never bigger. Let’s use a herd with a management group of 10animals. The bulls and heifers are split so at birth there are 2 contemporary groups; one group with 5 bulls (A, B, C, D, E) and one with 5 heifers (F, G, H, I, J). During the summer, the member takes 2 of the bulls and 2 of the heifers and shows them are various fairs. At weaning, we now have 2 management groups (shown and not shown) and 4 contemporary groups. One group of 3 heifers that were not shown, one group of 2 heifers that were shown, one group of 3 bulls that were not shown and one group of 2 bulls that were shown. Following weaning, all of the bulls are penned together and the heifers continued on page 16

CANADIAN CHAROLAIS YOUTH ASSOCIATION NEWS

2015 Conference & Show Wyatt Ching, National Board Vice-President

The annual Canadian Charolais Youth Conference and Show was held in Yorkton, Saskatchewan, July 22- 25, 2015. 68 youth members participated in the conference, exhibiting 75 head. The weather was warm but not too extreme making for an enjoyable conference. The conference kicked off with the highly anticipated mixer Wednesday night. This mixer was another one for the books. The participants had fun and made friends while parents stood back and watched the water, shaving cream, and syrup fly as the kids took part in games that are made to be messy. There were a large number of juniors at the conference this year. decided to take a page out of the AIJCA’s (American Juniors) book and try a mentorship program. The program pairs each junior member with a senior mentor and is given a book with questions to ask the national board and planning committee members. Each senior gets a junior that they mentor throughout the conference, whether it is helping them by introducing them to their partners for team events or helping them fill out judging cards. The mentorship program was well received by all. It really helped many of the juniors because they were first time CCYA participants. The mentorship program got the new juniors and the seniors acquainted and it was another fun activity for juniors to participate in. Keep and Cull was at Sliding Hills Charolais and was a competition that the mentorship program really

helped both seniors and juniors. All the juniors had a senior that could help answer questions about the competition. The senior members really enjoyed this approach to the competition. The Barn Bosses were Carey Weinbender, Canora, and Glenn Ching, Rockglen. Both Carey and Glenn really helped to make sure all events were on time and everything ran smooth. At the banquet, Carey and LeeAnn Weinbender were presented with the CCYA Honouree Award for their efforts in organizing and making this conference a success. The event wouldn’t have happened without everyone who sponsored and volunteered time to help make it such a great conference. Next year’s conference will be July 12-15, 2016, in conjunction with Summer Synergy, Olds, Alberta.

but we didn’t make a fortune and we certainly had a lot of fun. The Manitoba Syndicate operated for six or seven years. We met lots of good people through showing cattle. It would be nice to show cattle again, but I just don’t have the time. Warren isn’t interested in that. Showing is part of the purebred business if you are going to capitalize on your investment. You have to be out there showing and you have to be out there infront of the people. That is part of the promotion that just takes time.” Amy (their daughter) was really involved and enjoyed that part of the business. She attended CCYA Conferences and has many friends from the program. “When BSE hit, that was a tough time. We had a bull market built up in the States and it was immediately shut

off. (The Graydons are only twelve miles from the United States border.) Many of the producers in Manitoba didn’t survive through the crisis.”

The operations are bigger down there just like they have become here. The Charolais people that were close to the border, are no longer there. It is mostly blacks and

reds. We have a couple of long time customers that are finding their way back and last year one of them bought five bulls. It is taking some work to build up again, but it is coming.” “We had a Charolais group in this area called the Southeast Manitoba Charolais Breeders. We had our first sale in 1993 in Grunthal with around sixteen breeders consigning. The last group sale was in 2001. When Whole Herd Enrollment came in, we lost some people that were registering all of their calves, but didn’t want to be told they had to.” “Everything goes in cycles and Charolais will blossom again the way they should. We have a big foundation of black and red females just waiting for Charolais bulls to visit them. When the cattle prices drop, the Charolais bulls will still be in big demand.” Cliff was involved in the start of the Gunton Test Station. Their Ag Rep, Ray Salmon, felt there was a need for a supply of quality bulls in southeast Manitoba and interlake. Those producers just didn’t travel to Douglas Test Station to buy bulls. Gunton was the first test station to start semen testing. It was a decision Cliff took some flack over from other Charolais breeders, but he felt it was continued on page 22

The first Gunton Test Station Sale was in 1985 and Walking Plow Charolais had the bull with highest average daily gain. There were 54 bulls on test. “I have never been bashful or shy about promoting Charolais.” Cliff recalls his start in politics and feels it has been a natural progression throughout his life. Those who know Cliff’s quick wit and dry sense of humour may find this hard to believe, but Cliff has been involved in getting things done for the betterment of many for a long time. “When we went farming there was no organization to represent the cow/calf producers in Manitoba. There was a group called the Beef Growers that had 100 membership and it was all feedlot guys or big operators. The average cow/calf guy at that time had 30 cows and had no representation. In 1974 when we bought cows, in the fall the cow and calf weren’t worth the price we paid for the cow. The market had just fallen off the edge of the world.” “My neighbour and I were complaining to each other and felt that we needed some representation. So we started lobbying and working and organizing. All of this work came out of our back pocket. There were guys that would fill our tank with gas and send us on our way, maybe give us a sandwich. My neighbour Pepsi

The NDP had a BIAP program (Beef Income Assurance Program) but it wasn’t doing what it should have. We fought with the NDP to try to get decent policies to represent the average guy.” “We did a lot of travelling around the province, as Rose can attest to. At any rate, in 1977 Sterling Lyon got elected and the province had a Conservative government. At that time I wasn’t interested in provincial politics but I had a problem with the socialists. I was debating them on TV and the Conservative wannabes were using me and I was a willing participant. Those 14 districts are still the way the MCPA is organized.” Editor’s note: MCPA – recently changed to Manitoba Beef Producers (MBP) – is the exclusive voice of the beef industry in Manitoba and represents 7000 beef producers across the province. MBP is a non-profit organization with a producer elected board that consists of 14 directors, each representing cattle producers in a specific region or district of the province along with four full time staff.

“We conducted the election and had to establish the pecking order of the board. Knowing this was the Beef organization and the Cow/Calf organization working together for the first time, each piece of the industry would elect who they felt would serve them best. As it turned out, there were seven feedlot guys and seven cow/calf guys elected. So the cow/calf guys didn’t do anything different than the feedlot guys, we had a meeting the night before in the hotel to decide who we wanted to put forward for positions on the board. The boys insisted that I take on the president’s role. We had four votes the next day for president and they were tied every time. The acting secretary who had been appointed by the government decided this was going to be established by the casting of lots. I was just a stump rancher and I had no idea what casting of lots was, so I continued on page 24

asked. He said the decision would be made by flipping a coin and that’s how the first president of the MCPA was established. Norman Eadie, from Dugald, won the toss. It was one of the best things that happened to the organization. He was a lot more mature than I was at the time and he was a great guy.” “We had quite a task in establishing the checkoff system. I was chairing the committee to explain the process to the packing industry and auction marts. It was basically on the honour system. We did not have the power to audit anyone to make sure funds were transferred appropriately. Every time an animal changed hands there was supposed to be one dollar deducted. So they called a meeting with the packers and some of the auction mart guys and I was told in the first five minutes of the meeting that the packers would require $.80 to collect the $1 and would only pass on $.20. I talked a little bit and talked a little bit explaining that we couldn’t do that. They weren’t budging, so I said we would just have to talk to the minister and get the power to collect it. Then John Creshanga, the top buyer for Canada Packers, stood up and said, ‘We owe these boys a bill of gratitude. We would have a marketing board in Manitoba if it hadn’t been for them.

Canada Packers will collect and submit one dollar per head, there will be no collection fee. And we will advertise any other packer that does not and we do know how many head go through your packing plants.’ He made a speech and it only took him a

I am just happy that he is able to do something where he can have a little bit of recognition, because he has always done everything and no one knows. I hope they form government because I want him to be in government.” Cliff shared some advice and philosophy before we left. “The reason there are mountains is so they can be climbed. The only thing that will hold you back are your own dreams or lack of dreams. Maintain your integrity with your cattle, that’s it. We have never had a calving wreck with a bull. We have helped lots of people out over the years when they couldn’t afford a bull, sometimes it comes back and sometimes it doesn’t. It doesn’t matter, as long as it felt good when you did it.” Cliff has dedicated his life to the service of others. We hope he continues to share his experience and knowledge with the province he loves, but on the other side of the house after the next election.

OBITUARY

Clarence Eric Geddes Clare was predeceased by his parents, brother Cameron and his precious wife Dorothy Geddes. He is survived by daughter Pamela Salzburger, sons Eric, Earl (Helen Ann), Michael and Maurice (Jane), nine grandchildren & 13 great grandchildren. Clare lived his entire life in the Pilot Mound area of Manitoba except for his years of service in Europe during World War II. His passions for searching for historical artifacts, birds and flowers were well served by living on the farm west of Pilot Mound from 1946 until he moved to town. He looked forward to the Legion’s Remembrance Day services and always dressed up and marched along with the other Legion members, reminding his children to never forget the sacrifice so many have made.

Clare was a pioneer in many respects but certainly in the cattle business in Canada, where he brought some of the very first Charolais cross cattle to Canada in 1958, from Texas, and the very first French Charolais, from France, in 1966. His leadership at the Canadian Charolais Association resulted in the first North American Hotel Ballroom Sale in the brand new Lombard Hotel in Winnipeg in 1971. He was all for creating a stir. Clare was a director of the Canadian Charolais Association from 1960-1974 and president in 1964 and 1965. He was president of the Manitoba Charolais Association in 1968, 1969 and 1970. Clare and his wife Dorothy travelled to many countries around the world while he was involved in providing leadership to the International Charolais Association. His trip to Argentina was a highlight as well as the friendships he made in France and Japan. In 1981, Clare

imported a French bull from Scotland named Kinloch Roger which became a mainstay for many years in the Char-O-Clare operation. His commitment to agricultural leadership and development was recognized by the Manitoba Agricultural Hall of Fame, Red River Exhibition, Canadian and Charolais Internationals, the Manitoba Beef Cattle Performance Association as well as many others including the Pilot Mound community for his volunteer work. He enjoyed social get togethers, especially dancing. So much so that he moved the Forester’s Hall out to the farm so there could still be community dancing. For many it became known as the “Dancing Stock Farm.” He taught us the value of trees, to pick up a stone as it might be an ancient artifact and to smell a flower because we likely wouldn't see it again. He was a man of few words, in difficult times he would often say, “Life goes on.”

Canadian Beef Breeds Council Report Michael Latimer, CBBC Executive Director

Kazakhstan Trade Mission As part of our ongoing trade relations with Kazakhstan, the Canadian Beef Breeds Council (CBBC) attended a trade mission to Kazakhstan in August of 2015. This was in part to follow-up and build on activities from 2012, 2013, and 2014 trade missions to Kazakhstan. According to CanFax, Kazakhstan accounted for 39% of live breeding cattle exports in 2013. This will have been lower in 2014, but remains a priority export market for Canada. The trade mission was developed by Alberta Agriculture and Forestry with support from the Canadian Embassy in Kazakhstan as well as other Canadian government agencies and industry representatives. The role of CBBC on trade missions is to promote the Canadian purebred beef cattle and beef cattle genetics sector and not any specific breed. However, we often find ourselves discussing the strength of a particular breed and promoting the benefits of other sectors of Canadian agriculture such as dairy genetics, crops/forages, beef and many more; so representatives need to be prepared to answer a wide variety of random questions. The Kazak organizations that we met with were generally well informed of the value of Canadian

beef cattle, and how they improve local breeding stock in several functional traits. This is largely the result of the good work done by livestock exporters, breed associations and the tremendous support we have from the trade commissioner service through the Canadian Embassy in Kazakhstan. There are a number of interested buyers but financing and health regulations remain a barrier to increasing the number of cattle exported to Kazakhstan. It is primarily limited to buyers who can access financing outside of government programs and can do so in ‘planeloads’ of approximately 300 head of open heifers. CBBC will continue to work with our members and government agencies in developing opportunities in Kazakhstan for Canadian genetics. Trade Mission to Turkey The second leg of our trade mission took us to the country of Turkey. The export certificate for live cattle is currently being negotiated and we anticipate access in the near future. Currently, there is access for semen and embryos from Canada. The Canadian dairy industry has exported a significant volume of semen to Turkey as they have a well developed dairy production system and dairy products feature prominently in the Turkish diet.

It was interesting to visit several dairy farms as they utilized both Simmental and Holstein cattle. The beef cattle industry in Turkey is less developed than the dairy industry but is well positioned geographically and economically to grow over the next few years. The younger generation of Turkish consumers prefer beef products over their traditional dishes of lamb and mutton. Due to import tariffs on beef, it is more economical to import live feeder cattle, feed them for approximately 90 days and slaughter them under their ceremonial Halal standards. We visited a feedlot with a onetime capacity of 3000 head that were all imported from Uruguay. These cattle were primarily Hereford and Angus (Red and Black) and were in excellent condition. However, the Cattle Breeders’ Association of Turkey indicated that they need to further develop their domestic production in order to reduce their reliance on beef production through importing feeder cattle. They indicated that this will be accomplished through importing breeding stock and improving production management practices to fill the increasing demand for beef in Turkey. This will also be an important market for Canadian genetics as we look to add value to purebred cattle in Canada.

Fall Vaccinations and Processing Roy Lewis DVM

Producers are in the best position to control stress and maximize resistance to disease when timing of weaning is totally in their control. It has been proven time and again in the past with preimmunized (vaccinated) calves both morbidity (% getting sick) and mortality (% dying) are reduced. It is far better to prevent disease by vaccination than treat it both in terms of costs death loss and chronics. If you have not immunized at spring turnout for the common diseases such as blackleg (7 or 8 Way), IBR, PI3, BVD, BRSV do it NOW. The most prevalent respiratory pathogens Mannheimia Hemolytica, Pasteurella Multocida and Histophilus are also thrown into the mix. Most veterinarians are recommending these as the common infectious diseases to vaccinate for. The most important thing to remember is the calves ideally should have protection to these diseases before the stress of weaning occurs. If vaccinated initially at spring turnout the booster can be given right at weaning. Any other stressful procedures such as castration of the poorer bulls or tattooing are best done ahead of weaning as well. Hopefully these procedures are already done but if not donâ€™t leave them until weaning. The only stress at weaning should be the actual weaning event itself. If the calves were not immunized at spring turnout the priming or initial shots must be given at least two weeks prior to the major stress of weaning. This allows the calves to achieve maximum immunity. This requires the herd to be brought in, separated, immunized and put back together. Effort that is well worth the investment in healthier calves that go on to gain well and make good breeding stock. If doing the two-stage weaning with the nose flaps these

could be put on now. Most producers can attain the protection they require by giving two main vaccinations in the fall. A multivalent viral and bacterial vaccine contains protection against IBR, PI3 and BRSV the respiratory viral diseases as well as BVD and Mannheimia. A couple of vaccines on the market also contain protection against Pasteurella Multocida another bacteria that can cause pneumonia. BVD is often involved in the respiratory disease complex as well as causing severe diarrhea. BVD and IBR are also the two main reproductive diseases we want to especially protect the replacement heifers from. The second vaccination involves 8-way blackleg combined with histophilus. Your veterinarian could best advise the best combination for your farm and geographic area. Use the combinations, which minimize the number of shots necessary. The trend is always to use the modified live vaccines (where you mix the liquid to activate the powder) because they instill a longer immunity in the calves and are generally cheaper. These are fragile vaccines once mixed so donâ€™t overheat or freeze them and use any mixed product within two hours. If the modified vaccines are used in the spring at turnout and/or in the fall it is imperative the cowherd has been well protected for the reproductive diseases IBR and BVD ahead of time. As long as the cows have good immunity to these diseases the calves can be given the modified live vaccines while still sucking their mothers. Histophilus (ITEME) was once a significant killer in feedlots but vaccinating has severely reduced its incidence. A lot of the chronics in feedlots from heart abscesses to severe arthritis can be traced back to this disease. Vaccinating prior to weaning is critical to acquire the immunity necessary to protect calves

from the many forms of this disease. Even though feedlots vaccinate directly upon arrival they still have a large number of cases. This is simply because it is too late and vaccinating when calves are stressed does not achieve as high a level of immunity. This constitutes a second choice option at best. You as seedstock producers have the option of vaccinating at the most ideal time. Follow the weather reports and try to wean when weather is the most stable. Snowstorms or times when ambient temperatures are really fluctuating are obviously not ideal times to wean. When temperatures fluctuate below freezing at night to warm during the day this allows for a natural buildup of extra fluid on the lungs. In stressed calves this is where the respiratory viruses such as BRSV will multiply causing respiratory disease. We definitely see more severe cases of BRSV in farm-raised calves than in purchased ones. Remember to apply an endectocide together with an oral dewormer like safeguard, as this should remove all internal and external parasites improving gain and maintaining healthier calves. This is getting to be a routine procedure now across Canada. Removing the parasites helps the calves develop a good immunity to vaccines as well as improve gains. We always try to use subcutaneous vaccinations whenever possible to maintain beef quality. This way is easier and there is way less chance of needle breakage. The transition period to get calves started on proper feed is critical. Ideally if they have had creep feed over the summer the change will be minimal? If the calves are used to the pen and know where the watering bowls etc. are, change is again minimized. It is best to remove the cows and leave calves in their familiar surroundings. This is not always possible I know. Make sure water (Good Quality & Clean Water) is continued on page 33

Grass hays are the best to start with as they most closely mimic the pasture situation. If grain is introduced begin very gradually and bring up over a weeks time. When all precautions have been

taken, still watch diligently especially the first two weeks for signs of respiratory disease and digestive upsets. Work with your nutritionist and veterinarian to assist setting up the ideal program for your calves. Specific pneumonia treatments are best left up to you and your personal veterinarian. By utilizing these procedures it is not

uncommon to keep death loss very low (in the order of 1%) and purebred herds could be even less than that. I know most of you have tons of experience weaning your purebred herds so this article may have been more of a review, but hopefully a few ideas were learned. The Alberta Charolais Association event of the year is upon us again. This truly is an event that every breeder, not only in Alberta but across Canada should attend. It is two days of action packed excitement, enthusiasm and networking with Charolais breeders and commercial producers. It starts with the ACA AGM on Thursday afternoon, followed by supper and the Select Single Bull Show. All the cattle are housed in the great facility at the Westerner Park and there is lots of time to view the cattle and visit with breeders from across the country. Friday morning is the Select Pen Bull Show with draws of $11,000 in Bull Sale Credits and Pick of the Barn Winner. Last year there were many premier breeders who found their next herd bull in the pen show. The finale of the two days is the Select sale with another quality offering from 15 of Alberta’s top breeders. We are very excited to be helping with the sale again and although the numbers aren’t big, the quality is extremely high. The breeders participating this year offered their very best knowing the caliber of cattle that will be here. As you will see in the catalogue this sale has something for everyone, from an exclusive semen offering from a proven herdsire to unique embryos and flushes that will put you at the forefront of the industry. We have some picks and choices of bull and heifer calves and bred heifers that let you get into the keeper pen to find a great one. There are some fancy show prospect heifer calves that would work in any program, purebred or clubby. Bred heifers that took some convincing to get as the breeders didn’t want to part with them knowing how good they would be. Some cow/calf pairs that show how well these cows can produce. If you want to improve the quality of your herd or buy your first Charolais, this sale is the place to be. Over the past few years we have had several inquires about selling the pick of our heifer calves and we have always gave the same answer, “That we were building our program and that they were not for sale”. His grandfather purchased the first purebred bull that Rudiger Charolais sold the fall of 1960. They purchased their first females from the Michaelis Ranch in Texas in 1961 as well as the 1st purebred female sold in the 1st consignment sale in Canada from Rodney James. His family imported 1 bull and 2 females in the first French Importation and over the years imported 4 bulls and 8 females from France. They had the 1st and 3rd high gaining bulls, the same year, twice at the U of S Test Station sired by their own herd bulls. Ron, whose farm name was Char-Ron Charolais from Denzil, Saskatchewan had the 1977 Agribition Grand Champion Bull and the 1980 Grand Champion Female both sired by their own herd sires. Successfully showed his own cattle at shows like the World Show, Agribition and Denver as well as sticking cattle for other breeders at shows including the Toronto Royal, Denver, Houston and more. He was one of the first Canadians to be placed on the American Charolais judging list. Ron is retired and living in Edmonton. He was an art dealer for many years and is now donating his remaining prints to different organizations that he can help out.

Young Ranchman’s All Breeds Livestock Show The show was attended by youth across three provinces, Saskatchewan, Alberta and Manitoba, on September 25, 26 and 27 in Swift Current, Saskatchewan. There was 150 participants, exhibiting 170 head of cattle. They competed over the course of three days, in skill competitions such as public speaking, art, photography, team grooming, showmanship and show team judging. Saturday afternoon an open prospect steer show was held. The show concluded on Sunday with the

conformation show. Brian Barragree from Absorkee, Montana, evaluated both the prospect steers as well as the female show. On Saturday evening, at the Young Ranchman’s banquet, the online and live auction for the Cody Sibbald Legacy Fund was completed. The funds raised are to go towards helping qualified youth at the Young Ranchman’s Show take part in some worthwhile and memorable Champion Charolais Heifer Calf – MCL PLD CARRIE 514C, Morgan Debenham, Kennedy travel and educational scholarship opportunities.

The Canadian Charolais Youth Conference & Show was held in Yorkton, Saskatchewan this year from July 22nd to the 25th. 65 eager participants experienced a terrific event, with 65 head in the show. With 29 juniors and 26 intermediates, the 12 seniors had their work cut out for them as they assisted and mentored the younger groups. The strength in the youth divisions points to a strong organization for years to come. The educational seminars started

the Conference on the first afternoon. AgMoreThanEver has visited the CCYA Conference and Show for the past few years, Kara Martinson and her team got the group thinking about agriculture with a power point presentation on agricultural promotion and some interesting Ag Facts. Once broken into groups, youth were asked to write tweets for the AgMoreThanEver twitter page using hash-tags like #agproud and #farm365, some of these were posted

online! The Juniors created Ag posters and paper fortune-tellers, the Intermediates watched video parodies created by the Peterson Farm Brothers and tried to create some of their own. Riley Lafrentz, from Wheatland Cattle Co., Bienfait, worked with each age group on the different aspects of judging cattle. Riley made some great points on how to present yourself, how to work with animals and ringman to organize a ring and how to put together an effective set of oral reasons. This advice went a long way for our youth in both the Individual and Team Judging events held throughout the week. Dr. Bart Lardner and Kathy Larson from the Western Beef Development Center in Lanigan also did a seminar for the group. The juniors learned about things to look for when selecting cattle for a herd and grazing choices. A presentation on the costs of heifer development and some specific research done at Termunde related to breeding and feeding replacement females was given to the intermediates. A presentation focused on the goals at Termunde Ranch, as well as data gathered from trials focused on different grazing systems for cow herds (swath grazing, bale grazing, corn grazing) promoted an excellent discussion among the Seniors. The Yorkton Exhibition Association sponsored a barbecued steak supper for everyone on the opening night

setting the stage for the hospitality experienced throughout the week. As has been the case for a number of years, the opening mixer was a highlight for everyone. The kids all participated and those that were new to the program soon set aside their apprehension and enjoyed the evening making many friends. Warm showers in the wash rack were welcomed, but for some reason the swimming area in the hotel smelled more of maple syrup than chlorine that night. Sliding Hills Charolais, Carey and LeeAnn Weinbender

of Canora hosted the Keep and Cull Competition. Jordan River Charolais, Glen and Lori Mangels, Carrot River, joined them to sponsor, cook and serve supper for all of the participants and their families. Everyone got a chance to have a herd tour and the youth enjoyed a team balloon breaking competition. The game turned out to be so popular, they played three rounds before it was time to leave. Mike and Joanne Neilson, Neilson Cattle Company, Willowbrook, hosted a pizza supper Friday night in their beautiful yard and their sale facility. It was a relaxed supper and the kids enjoyed more games before returning to Yorkton to retire. Barn Bosses for the event were Carey Weinbender and Glenn Ching. All of the parents chipped in where necessary to hold animals for the judging competitions and to help things run smoothly. Although the parents are not allowed to help the participants, this help enables the youth to participate in the week’s activities freely. Special thanks to the Grieve family, who provided the animals for the team grooming finals. 2nd Generation CCYA Conference and Show Participations Awards were awarded to Morgan Debenham, Kennedy; Hunter, Halle and Hayla Herback, Bladworth; Will Rosso, Moose Jaw; and Pheonix and Titan Preston-Winder, Neudorf. All in all it was a terrific week and many of the youth are already talking about attending next year in Alberta!

OBITUARY

George Bolin 1944 â€“ 2015

Long-time resident of Cecil Lake, British Columbia and well-known rancher, George Bolin passed away July 9, 2015 in 78

Edmonton, Alberta. George was born August 19, 1944 in Fort St. John, BC. George was a dedicated rancher and took great pride in raising his herd of Charolais cattle. He ran a large herd under the name Bar B Charolais. For over 30 Charolais Banner â€˘ October 2015

years they had a bull sale every spring in Dawson Creek, selling 40 bulls. The cowherd and herd bulls sold to Bob Miles at Williams Lake last winter. George was a very familiar face at local auctions. He is survived by his wife Lynda.
