As the saying goes, “Records are made to be broken,” and broken they were. This year saw the highest-selling Charolais bull in Canadian history. Congratulations to everyone involved in making history.
I don’t think anyone anticipated what this spring would bring in terms of what buyers were willing to pay for top-end bulls. I’ve always said that quality sells—and that holds true across all commodities. The better the product and the clearer the benefit to the consumer, the more they are willing to pay. Commercial cow-calf operations really stepped up this year and, in many cases, came prepared to invest. I hope everyone shows their appreciation for that support. Overall, the sale average was up $3,608—an outstanding result. Congratulations to each and every one of you on a job well done.
So where are we on the demand curve for Charolais bulls? I wish we had a crystal ball. I truly believe we haven’t seen the peak yet, as more producers recognize the advantages of incorporating Charolais bulls into their operations. That said, we must
be careful not to become complacent. Just because we can doesn’t mean we should. Maintaining integrity and strengthening the breed requires continued discipline. I encourage all producers to keep raising the bar year after year.
We also saw increased demand for calving ease and heifer bulls, as more operations recognize the benefits of breeding heifers to Charolais to produce the kind of uniform calf crop buyers are looking for.
Top-yielding cull bulls have surpassed the $8,000 mark—nearly $2,000 higher than this time last year. Not sure about you, but I can’t wait to see green grass again—even if it comes with mosquitoes.
In this issue, you’ll find the spring bull sale chart. As always, its accuracy depends on the information provided. The more data we receive, the more reliable these charts become, and we thank you for continuing to see the value in contributing.
Looking ahead, the Canadian Charolais Association AGM will be held in Nova Scotia in June. It’s shaping up to be a great event, with plenty of activities planned throughout the week in the Maritimes. We’re looking forward to it.

While on the topic of the Maritimes, be sure to read the profile on the multi-generational McAffee Farms in New Brunswick—it’s a great story. Also, don’t miss updates from the Saskatchewan Charolais Association, the Sask Royal at The Willows Golf Course, and the Alberta Charolais Association’s annual summer tour.
In July, youth will gather in Carp, Ontario for the Canadian Charolais Youth Association Conference and Show. The organizing committee has been working hard, and it’s sure to be a fantastic week. The Charolais World Congress in Australia in early August is also shaping up to be an incredible event—there’s still time to book your trip if you haven’t already.
We wish everyone a safe and successful spring seeding season and hope you receive the moisture needed to keep that grass growing.
Justin and I will be on the road this summer, so if you’re looking to update photos for next spring’s bull sale catalogue or want to be part of the 60th Herd Sire edition, now is the time to book. Summer truly is the best time for cattle photography.

2026 is shaping up to be one for the history books. One of the early highlights came in January when I attended the U.S. National Show and Sale in Denver. This event is always a great opportunity to network with my counterparts at AICA, and US breeders.

Overall, the convention provided valuable insights and reinforced the importance of staying informed and engaged within the industry. To remain competitive, the plant needs to maximize pounds on each animal.
The next event on the agenda was the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association Convention in Nashville. This was my first time attending, and I would highly recommend it to all members. The sessions were informative and thought-provoking. One session I attended focused on carcass size, and it generated a great deal of discussion. There was considerable debate around optimal carcass weights, with some arguing that increasing size—up to 1,150 lbs—can still be profitable, while others questioned the longterm sustainability of that trend. It was interesting to hear different perspectives and consider how these decisions impact both the producer and the end product.
Another key takeaway from the event was the ongoing conversation around cow herd efficiency. There was strong emphasis on the need to produce more with less—focusing on efficiency, profitability, and adaptability in today’s market conditions.
The next session I attended focused on the Beef on Dairy and the direction the industry is heading. At present, black-hided cattle continue to dominate many breeding decisions, but there is a slight shift occurring toward cattle with more yield potential. Advancements in technology—particularly genomics— are playing a larger role in how breeding and selection decisions are made in this sector of the beef industry.
Sale season this spring has been very strong and active. It’s been interesting to see the shift in mindset among producers. A few years ago, many producers would talk about how little they had invested in their bulls—now, the conversation has shifted to how much they are willing to pay for quality genetics. Let’s hope these positive trends continue for the foreseeable future.
The Canadian Charolais Association (CCA) AGM will be held in June, in the Maritimes. More information is available in this issue of the Banner. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

MC AFFEE FARMS LTD.
MULTI-GENERATION BREEDERS IN NEW BRUNSWICK
by Heather Coughlin
Tucked along the border between New Brunswick and the state of Maine, and about an hour and a half from the Quebec border, McAffee Farms Ltd. is quietly building on a legacy more than 50 years in the making.
What began with Jack McAffee has grown into a third-generation Charolais operation in Lower Knoxford, with his son Jeff and grandsons Jacob and Jack David. Today, the family runs roughly 300 head of cattle,
the majority of them purebred Charolais, with a smaller number of commercial animals rounding out the herd.
That legacy traces back to 1974, when Jack Sr. purchased his first purebred Charolais cattle—two cows originally from Texas that cost nearly as much as a brand-new truck at the time. “A lot of people thought I was crazy,” he recalls with a laugh. “But it was the best decision I ever made. Charolais is the breed that I like.”
Jack started farming in 1967, milking Holsteins and shipping cream while also playing music several
nights a week. Looking for a change of pace, he quit milking and began crossing with Charolais by AI before eventually investing in purebred bulls. Over time, those early decisions helped shape what the farm is today.
His decades of commitment to the breed were recognized with a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Canadian Charolais Association at the AGM in Moncton in 2019.
Jeff, the middle generation of the operation, focuses on feeding and machinery. He says he enjoys every day having the opportunity to work with his father
“A lot of people thought I was crazy,” he recalls with a laugh. “But it was the best decision I ever made. Charolais is the breed that I like.”
and sons. “We all work together to keep the farm going – I couldn’t ask for a better career and crew.”
For Jacob, who is 28 years old, farming is both tradition and full-time commitment. He and his grandfather handle the day-to-day herd work, including the busy calving seasons—purebreds arriving in January and February, while commercial cows calve out on pasture in the fall. Jacob’s brother
Jack David lends a hand wherever needed, having returned to the farm after working as a carpenter. While cattle are now the clear focus, the farm once had a strong footing in potatoes. For decades, the McAffees grew about 200 acres, but changing industry dynamics made it increasingly difficult to continue. As contracts shrank and larger operations expanded, it became harder for smaller growers to compete.

Labour challenges added another layer of pressure.
“At the same time, our cattle herd was growing,” Jacob says. “And honestly, we wanted to go bigger with the cattle.”
The potato growing operation ended in 2017. Today, the McAffees farm approximately 1,500 acres, including hay, pasture, and cash crops like soybeans, corn, and grain. About 800 acres are typically sold as cash crops, though that balance continues to evolve with input costs and market conditions.
Still, it’s their summer grazing program that is truly unique.
Each year, the McAffees load cattle onto a barge and transport them to islands in the St. John River near Oromocto and Maugerville. With a capacity of about 16,000 pounds per trip, the barge carries the cattle to expansive island pastures—each roughly 700 acres. The land, which typically floods in the spring, remains free of permanent structures, making it ideal for seasonal grazing.

The family owns part of one island and leases another, sharing space with other producers. Once the cattle are turned out, management is very lowmaintenance. Every couple of weeks, one of the producers makes the trip by barge—often with a side-by-side loaded on—to check the herd and replenish mineral and salt.
“There’s no fencing to worry about and no predators, really,” Jacob explains. “It’s about as worryfree as it gets.”
As the operation grows, those islands have become an important piece of the puzzle. In recent years, the McAffees have expanded their herd in part by purchasing cattle from neighbouring farms as producers exit the industry. Rather than dramatically increasing infrastructure at home, they’ve been able to make use of rented pasture and island grazing to

accommodate that growth.
The farm’s cattle move well beyond New Brunswick. Feeder cattle are regularly shipped to Cookstown, Ontario, connecting the operation to a broader market. Only the registered Charolais females are retained, and the family continues to build their reputation through select purebred sales in Atlantic Canada (consigning to Balamore Farms & Guests Shoreline All Breeds Female Sale, Atlantic Elite Charolais Female Sale) and Quebec.
Even with decades of experience behind him, Jack Sr. still keeps a close connection to the day-to-day work. In the summer, he can often be found fixing fence—something he says he enjoys for both the exercise and the quiet.
He has also seen firsthand how the industry has changed. What once meant small mixed farms with a handful of cows and a few acres of crops has shifted to larger, more specialized operations. Markets, too, have become less predictable, influenced by global
trade and factors beyond a farmer’s control.
“It’s a different world now,” he says. “There are things going on that we have no control over. You just have to carry on.”
That mindset—adapt, adjust, and keep moving forward—has helped guide McAffee Farms through decades of change. It’s also what continues to drive the next generation.
Jacob, who has been involved on the Maritime Charolais Association, brings a forward-looking approach to the operation. Whether it’s expanding the herd, finding new opportunities, or making deals to bring in additional cattle, he is focused on growth while maintaining the strong Charolais foundation his grandfather built.
“We’re definitely not done growing,” he says.
From two cows bought on a hunch to a multigenerational operation spanning land, river, and borders, McAffee Farms Ltd. is a story of steady evolution.
“It’s a different world now,” he says. “There are things going on that we have no control over. You just have to carry on.”

Share Your Feedback on the Beef Cattle Code of Practice
Tyler Fulton, President
The public comment period for the Beef Cattle Code of Practice (Beef Code or the Code) is open from April 13 through June 12, 2026 at www. nfacc.ca/codes-of-practice/beef-cattle. The Beef Code outlines expected and recommended animal care practices for beef cattle and is subject to a regular review process. The public comment period is an opportunity for anyone who has an interest in how beef cattle are raised in Canada, including consumers, veterinarians, foodservice professionals, and producers, to review the draft content and share their feedback.
Feedback gathered through the public comment period is critical in the code development process and helps determine the content of the final document. Having strong producer feedback from all regions of Canada will be an important step in this process.
The Beef Code is one of 14 Codes of Practice in Canada that provide critical guidance for the care and handling of farm animals. The Codes of Practice serve as our national understanding of on-farm animal care requirements and recommended practices. They serve as reference materials for regulations, extension tools, and the foundation for animal care assessment programs. General information on farm animal codes of practice in Canada can be found at https://www.nfacc.ca/codes-ofpractice
The Beef Code is meant to drive continuous improvement in animal welfare and is built to be scientifically informed, practical, and reflect societal expectations for responsible farm animal care. The Code uses an outcome-based approach that focuses
on achieving successful standards while allowing for flexibility in how these outcomes are met rather than dictating the exact processes or methods to be used.
The National Farm Animal Care Council (NFACC) (www.nfacc.ca) oversees the process of developing and reviewing Codes of Practice through a structured, multistakeholder process that includes producers, veterinarians, scientists, transporters, processors, retailers, government, and animal welfare representatives. CCA is a member of NFACC and serves as the national commodity organization responsible for initiating the code review process for its sector, in alignment with NFACC’s established review timelines. Decisions are scienceinformed and consensus-based.
The review process involves two committees: the Code Development Committee and Scientific Committee. The Code Development Committee updates the Code if required and the Scientific Committee reviews literature to determine priority welfare issues and summarizes the available research for use by the Code Development Committee. Science-informed, industry leadership on code development, reviews, and revisions ensures a code that reflects an animal care standard that is grounded in practicality while considering the diversity of Canadian beef cattle producers.
Codes of Practice are used as a reference document for developing extension and educational materials, the foundation of on-farm quality assurance programs, and to inform regulatory frameworks. Maintaining an up-to-date Code informs potential policy conversations with industry expertise backed by science and
prevents rules written by people far from primary production. A current Code can help inform policy by showing what’s workable and already in place, providing helpful context and a frame of reference on acceptable practices and standards of care in Canada.
The content and layout of the draft code available for public comment remains largely consistent with the current Beef Code, which can be viewed at www.nfacc.ca/codes-ofpractice/beef-cattle. The proposed draft incorporates new scientific evidence and updated practices in beef cattle care.
The code committee uses a consensus-based process to propose changes. The draft code changes have been suggested with consideration for scientific evidence, societal expectations and feasibility to adopt in a wide variety of regions and production systems.
There are six sections or “chapters” in the Code. Key topics of interest to producers are highlighted here. Producers are encouraged to review the document in full to provide feedback.
Animal Environment
• New section on mud and moisture to describe welfare impacts of mud and moisture, including reduced coat insulation and foot health problems
• An emphasis on the importance of safe, low-stress cattle movement that protects both cattle and handlers
• Considerations for housing severely sick or injured cattle Feed and Water
• Stronger guidance on feed and water testing, toxic feeds, feed bunk management, and use of nutritionists

Breeding season is now here, so thoughts on placing bulls and pulling bulls are necessary at this time of year. With prices, they are a huge investment and sometimes Murphy's law of bulls the high selling one’s weird things seem to happen, so be ever vigilant.
Planning and careful observations are necessary anytime around bulls. They may give us a clue as to how the breeding season will go or has gone. Because they are stressed during breeding season and have lost lots of weight, they are, in a way, a sentinel animal for disease, parasites, both external and internal. Bulls are now going into their rest and relaxation period for next year, but decisions need to be made on several fronts. Are they going to be used next year or just fattened to be marketed at an appropriate time? Do they have any nagging injuries or issues that need attending to before they are put in the bull pen? You paid good money for your herd sires, whether commercial or purebred breeder, and it is an investment worth protecting. Also, reintroducing bulls to each other comes with its own set of problems. Those bulls coming out of a single sire mating pen will need to get accustomed to their new roommates and therein lies the problem. The zoos talk about enrichment for their animals, and I do believe the bull pen things to rub on push around cover to get into, as well as being as big as possible, go a long way to preventing mishaps from developing.
Most good breeding bulls in a confined breeding season will come off underweight, which is often a good sign that they have been actively breeding. Those in immaculate condition, I often
Things to Consider When Placing and Pulling Bulls
Roy Lewis, DVM
wonder if any breeding was getting done. Conversely, those that lose a tremendous amount of weight, one wonders if they were overly aggressive breeders or spent too much time fighting, especially with multi sire pastures. Since bulls are being pulled and often transported, now is the ideal time to closely examine them. Closely examine the underbelly for swellings around either the sheath, penis or testicles. Minor swelling may indicate a cut penis, which may indicate a problem for next year and severely swollen or degenerated testicles, which may cause to fertility check after a few weeks of convalescence. I know this is not a routine procedure, but it may be warranted, especially if going into another breeding. In other cases, identifying a problem may lead to a treatment option or avoiding feeding the bull all winter only to find him infertile at the spring-time semen check. Any penile ulcers, cuts, scarring of the penis or adhesions from a tough breeding season can be dealt with, or if permanent, the bull shipped.
The feet and legs, including hoofs, should be at least visualized for any conditions that need treating or corrective trimming done as a preventative. Lameness and injury are one of the most common causes of culling bulls. Again, no reason to feed a bull all winter simply to cull him in the spring. Conversely, attending to foot problems early or treating and allowing a bull to convalesce from an injury or treating with appropriate anti-inflammatory drugs in a timely fashion may allow another year's usage. I am seeing more bulls collected after the breeding season for reasons like having insurance in the tank in case something happens, or getting older, and longevity is a great trait to pass on from either the bull or cow side.
Another potential for problems developing is how bulls are reintroduced to each other when pulled from pasture. The best thing, in my opinion, is a pasture/pen with lots of room, no boxed-in corners, some bush or hiding places and lots of feed. They should have good access to water with no boxed-in areas where a bull could get trapped. I have seen many severe and life ending injuries once bulls are pulled from pasture. Our priority is getting the bulls out of the breeding herd, and we are not thinking yet about their health or being proactive for next year's breeding season. There may be very valuable bulls that, if they have been used on a single sire mating, you may want to winter with a younger buddy than risk running with all the bulls. Murphy’s law is that the most valuable bull is the one most likely to get hurt. Also, with insured bulls, insurance companies take a dim view if due diligence isn’t demonstrated when reintroducing bulls back to each other with doing things like avoiding fighting
Try to introduce the bulls to each other at the same time, but let them slowly find each other. You may know from history that bulls get along with each other. Bulls have been culled over the years simply because they disturb the peace and are trouble makers, and that aggressiveness will not go away. Others are extremely good at inflicting damage to other bulls, so they may not be worth keeping around. Previous health concerns or inability to keep weight on may be other reasons. Also, when mixing the appeasing products, like Cattle Zen or Ferappease, could be applied. If you did, I would do the whole group and likely as they were walking down an alleyway. Just do it safely, and I realize many times you are trying to minimize handling and
agitate them.
Sometimes blood may even need to be drawn if we think of internal infection, such as peritonitis, kidney issues or liver damage. Some producers use foot rot, clostridial and respiratory viral vaccines, fly control, and deworming at semen testing time as health prevention measures. Inquire from your veterinarian which preventative strategies are relevant in your geographic area. Once breeding season is over, bulls tend to be forgotten about. This is why the syndicated partnership bulls that are used in different herds at different times have many benefits. Bulls are looked at more closely, especially when moving and transporting. Early problems can be identified, and they really stay in much better shape. They are less likely to injure themselves than sitting in a bull pen. If you have partners in a bull, think they are trying to look after them as well as you can. When delivering bulls, think of using the appeasing pheromone
products when necessary. This keeps them calmer.
By being proactive with an eye on prevention and housing bulls properly, you are helping to ensure more bulls will come out of the winter in good shape and pass their breeding soundness exams. Conditions such as corns on one foot can be surgically corrected. Keep in mind that if your veterinarian prescribes treatment, many antimicrobials can be put in grain, some anti-inflammatory drugs given orally in feed or poured on the back. Dewormers are given in the feed or minerals under prescription. My last points show there are many management preventions which can be given to bulls without having to handle them all the time.
Drones and mounted cameras or a good set of binoculars should also be carried so observations can be made on these valuable herd sires. It has been said many times that they are half the genetics of the herd, so worth preserving. If age is advancing or

things like stifle injuries are making shipping inevitable, many producers may even get semen drawn so they can preserve the valuable genetics for many years into the future. That even happens with good heifer bulls, which simply get too big to breed the cows. By looking after the bulls better in the fall and culling those necessary, you will be set up well to look early for the next promising herd sire. With no surprises, you can better purchase new stock and manage better how you market the old sires as one must not forget what they are bringing on the rail.

2026 Spring Bull Sale Summary
The 2026 Charolais bull sale season stands as the most successful year in the forty four year history of recorded breed data, marking an unprecedented milestone for both breeders and buyers across Canada. Every major performance indicator— number of sales, average prices, total lots, and gross revenue—reached its highest level on record, underscoring the exceptional demand for Charolais genetics and the continued confidence in the breed’s commercial value.
A total of 131 sales were held in 2026, the largest number ever documented. This expansion in sale activity reflects both the depth of breeder participation and the sustained strength of the Canadian cattle market. Increased sale volume was matched by remarkable price performance across all bull categories.
Mature bulls led the year with a dramatic rise, averaging $25,990, more than doubling the previous year’s figure and setting a new benchmark for the category. Two year old bulls averaged $13,292, while yearling bulls reached $13,217, both representing significant year over year gains and the highest averages recorded in the dataset. These increases demonstrate broad based market confidence, with buyers investing heavily in both proven herd sires and young breeding prospects.
Total lots sold averaged 13,267, another all time high, indicating strong supply matched by equally strong buyer demand. The cumulative impact of higher volumes and elevated price levels resulted in a record setting sale gross of $57,390,513, surpassing the previous
high by more than $17 million.
The 2026 results affirm the Charolais breed’s position as a leader in performance, consistency, and market relevance. Breeders across the country delivered exceptional cattle, and buyers responded with unprecedented enthusiasm. This historic year reflects not only the strength of the current market, but also the long term value and reputation of Charolais genetics within the Canadian beef industry.
Bull Sale Chart Notes:
• Statistics are from fall 2025 sales with bulls and spring 2026 bull sales.
• No U.S. bull sales are included in the chart.
• The sales with fall long-yearlings were treated as two-year old bulls.
Breeders must submit a sale summary to the Charolais Banner office (by e-mail or phone) to ensure their sale is included in the chart and further statistics. Unless the Charolais Banner office receives a report, no information will be shown for that sale.
