Wow, what a bull selling season. Outside of a few sales that had some weather issues most all Charolais sales were stronger, with more bulls selling and just like the commercial market, got stronger as the sale season progressed. There were a number of sales where the averages were up $1,500 or more per bull. The commercial market, whether it be feeder cattle, fat cattle or cull cows and bulls, is at all time highs. We have also seen the breeding heifers, bred cows and cow/calf pairs heading for grass getting steadily stronger and at historic high prices. In April open commercial heifers in the prairie provinces were well above $1,500 apiece and cow/calf pairs at $2,500 and rising. At the start of the bull season there was definite concern we would have an oversupply of bulls with all the cows that went out of the system in the past 12 months. Maybe this did occur in some of the other breeds’ later sales, but on the whole, I think the high cull bull prices saw more older bulls being sold and replaced with new ones. The Charolais also didn’t see it as the switch is on and more commercial producers are coming back to or trying Charolais for the first time. As I have said many times, you have to crossbreed as a cow/calf producer and more are realizing this. The Charolais breed is going to be an exciting place to be, in the years ahead. Check out the Bull Sale Summary at the end of the sale reports in this issue and see how well we did.

This spring quality definitely paid a premium in the bull sales. There was very strong demand for the heifer bulls that also had enough performance to breed the cowherd. I can see this trend continuing as more breeders try to get their BW EPD at levels that are sought after by many of the commercial producers, but not give up too much performance. Having said that, there were many instances where the bigger birth weight, bigger performance bulls were highly sought after as well. If you have developed a varying cliental you will have good markets for all your bulls. Starting to feed your bulls earlier is also a plus in marketing your animals. Not only do you have better performance numbers at weaning and yearling but the bulls are more ready for pictures 60 days before the sale. The better the pictures, the better the interest is. I am not saying stuff the bulls to where you hurt them or shorten their longevity, but if you start early and feed them better, longer, it will pay dividends. As one breeder told me years ago “most farmers sell their corn for $4/bushel, I feed mine to my bulls and sell it for $10.” Candace and I have put together a very informative program for the Canadian Charolais Breeder School. There are so many younger breeders in the Charolais industry that we felt we needed to help equip them with some more knowledge in the fast paced world of technology. From Genomics to Social Media to online record management from your smart phones and the wisdom of some very successful breeders, we feel we have a

great event and hope you will all make a sincere effort to attend. It will also be a great opportunity to network in a relaxed atmosphere with breeders you have never met before. The Canadian Charolais Association Annual General Meeting is in Renfrew, Ontario, the last weekend in June and we were asked to put together a little pre‐tour ahead of it. This will also be a fun few days and we hope whether you are from the west, Ontario or further east that you will come and see the capital city and surrounding area and breeders. Also on a National level is the Canadian Charolais Youth Association Conference and Show in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba. I know the Manitoba hospitality will be excellent and if you have never attended one of these, please try to. If you have kids who enjoy 4‐H, they will love CCYA. My city raised kids were never in 4‐H but really enjoyed participating in this annual event and they made lifelong friends from right across the country. You don’t need to haul an animal as you can borrow from other participants or have other breeders bring an extra for you. Just come out and be a part of it. There are also many provincial events from shows to Annual meetings coming up this summer and I encourage you to attend and support as many of these as you can. The more you put into the industry the more you will get out of it and it starts with participation. See you down the trail. Until next time, Helge

Wow, quelle saison pour les ventes de taureaux. À part les quelques ventes qui ont eu des problèmes causé par la météo, la plupart des ventes Charolais ont été très bonnes, avec plus de taureaux vendus sur le marché commercial, qui est resté plus fort à mesure que la saison progressait. Il y avait plusieurs ventes où les moyennes étaient jusqu’à 1500 $ supérieures par taureau que les autres années Le marché commercial, que ce soit bovins d’engraissement, vaches et taureaux de réforme en bonne condition de chair, ont atteint des niveaux records. Nous avons également vu des génisses d’élevage, vaches saillies et des paires de vaches / veaux pour le pacage obtenir des prix historiques. En Avril les génisses commerciales dans les provinces des Prairies étaient bien au‐ dessus de 1500 $ chacune et des paires de vaches / veaux à $ 2500 et en hausse. Au début de la saison on craignait pour les ventes, d’avoir un excédent de taureaux, avec toutes les vaches qui ont été réformées depuis les douze derniers mois.. Peut‐être que cela s’est produit dans certaines des ventes pour d’autres races, mais dans l’ensemble, je pense que les prix des taureaux de réforme élevés à contribuer a ce que les éleveurs les ont remplacés par des nouveaux. Le Charolais ne voyait que du positif et les producteurs commerciaux sont de retour, ou plusieurs essaient du Charolais pour la première fois. Comme je l’ai dit à plusieurs reprises, plusieurs font un croisement en tant que producteur vache / veau et de plus en plus se rendent compte de son potentiel. La race Charolaise continuera,sa montée fulgurante dans les années à venir,consultez les rapports de vente sur notre site WEB et cela répondra à plusieurs de vos questions. 6

La qualité à été très payantes dans les ventes de taureaux ce printemps. Il y avait une très forte demande pour les taureaux de 1 an avec de bonnes performances pour entrer dans le troupeau. Je peux voir cette tendance se poursuivre et de plus en plus d’éleveurs essaient d’obtenir des EPD BW à des niveaux qui sont recherchés par de nombreux producteurs commerciaux, mais sans pour autant enlever de la performance. Cela dit, il y avait de nombreux cas ou le poids à la naissance était plus haut, et des taureaux avec plus de performance sont très recherchés. Si vous avez développé ce genre de taureaux vous aurez toujours de bons marchés pour tous vos taureaux . Nourrir vos taureaux tôt contribue dans la commercialisation de vos animaux. Non seulement vous avez de meilleures données sur le rendement au moment du sevrage et du poids à 1 an les taureaux sont plus prêts pour les photos 60 jours avant la vente. .Plus les photos sont révélatrices meilleurs sont les prix. Je n’ai pas à vous montrer comment nourrir vos taureaux pour ne pas raccourcir leur longévité, mais si vous commencez tôt à bien les nourrir,ils vous rapporterons des dividendes. Comme un éleveur m’a dit il ya plusieurs années “ la plupart des agriculteurs vendent leur maïs pour 4/bushel $, je nourris bien mes taureaux et ils me rapporte 10 $. “Candace et moi avons mis sur pied un programme très instructif, ni plus ni moins qu’un genre d’École Charolaise Canadienne. Il ya tellement de jeunes éleveurs dans l’industrie Charolaise que nous avions besoin de les aider à s’équiper avec un peu plus de connaissances dans le monde trépidant de la technologie. très bien réussis, nous pensons que nous avons quelque chose de très important, et nous espérons que vous allez tous faire un effort pour pouvoir y assister. Mes enfants n’ont jamais été des 4‐H, mais ils ont vraiment apprécié participer à cet événement annuel et ils se sont fait des amis à vie à la grandeur du pays. Vous n’avez pas besoin d’apporter d’animal vous pouvez en partager avec d’autres participants,ou demander à un éleveur d’en apporter un de plus.C’est tout simplement de venir s’amuser.Il y a également de nombreux événements provinciaux et d’expositions qui se tiendront au courant de l’été et je vous encourage à y assister et de soutenir vos activitées .La participation est la base pour soutenir l’industrie. Freemartins Roy Lewis DVM

With better nutrition and management and a higher incidence of twins in the Charolais and Holstein breeds, some larger herds can have up to a 10% twinning rate. With the odds of 50% of the twins being the mixed sexes it is no wonder freemartins are not an uncommon occurrence. Remember though that being twins of mixed sexes is not a guarantee the female will have none or undeveloped reproductive organs. In eight percent of the cases a normal intact heifer is the result, which if kept could reproduce normally. Freemartins become a bit of a management headache for several reasons. They are often the ones orphaned onto another cow and their identity as a twin may be lost. Because of their masculine characteristics they grow very well and most often end up in the upper 25% percentile for growth so inadvertently will be kept as replacements. If in the feedlot and identified they should be given a steer implant as their hormonal profile more closely mimics a steer. The issue here is they tend to get ridden lots if put in the steer pen and are the more aggressive ones if put in the heifer pen. Sometimes they end up in the chronic pen and stay there until finished. Veterinarians can pick out these freemartin heifers if you have them palpated to select for breeding soundness. Several beneficial things are accomplished at palpating. As mentioned the freemartin heifers are identified and removed as well as any pregnant ones (teenage pregnancies), ones with abnormally small pelvises, or those which are reproductively underdeveloped. One must remember any twin intact heifers genetically will have more of a predisposition to twin themselves. If you want a higher incidence of twins in your herd select them as replacements and if not cull

them out the choice is yours. If you don’t palpate heifers before selection the management issue is keeping track of these freemartin heifers. The first is identifying them for sure. There are several ways to do this. Most have abnormally developed external genitalia with a very prominent protruding clitoris and what I describe as feathery vulval lips. There is a small instrument which measures the depth of the vaginal vault or a person can use a plastic test tube. Measure some normal heifers to get the average depth. Freemartin heifers will be considerably shorter to the point of having no vaginal vault. This measurement is made within a few days of birth. Then identify these freemartins with a distinct tag or notch their existing tag. The bottom line is making them distinguishable down the production line. Blood or DNA tests can also be done for freemartin determination and is useful if their external genitalia looks normal and they are potentially valuable breeding stock. Where the huge loss comes with freemartins is if they are kept and kept not having a calf and remaining in the herd. I have personally palpated several four to five year old freemartins with the producer wondering why they have not calved. If you purchase heifer replacements, again keep in mind some will be freemartins. When palpating in the heifer shows pen of ten or pen of five type competitions, it is not uncommon to find some freemartins present. They are selected because as already mentioned they have superior growth. A good rule when selecting heifers is always remove the top five percent of your heifers for growth as they may have higher levels of male hormones and similar to freemartins will have poor fertility or be totally sterile. If you see dairy heifers for sale, do an about face as they most likely are Charolais Banner • May 2014

freemartins as most intact dairy heifers are kept as replacements with the high culling rate in the dairy industry. I once was spaying heifers and spent some time trying to spay a freemartin heifer at a feedlot before finally realizing it, only to discover on her tag the producer had written twin. Had we been paying attention, the procedure of spaying would not have been necessary. It would be nice to have a standardization of tagging across the industry for freemartins but that will probably never come to pass. I have looked at some triplets and the same principal applies, most are freemartins if there is a bull calf in the mix. Other bovines such as bison have had freemartins documented even though twinning is very rare. We also rarely see hermaphrodites (intersexes) in the cattle industry and these should be put in the same category they are sterile and should be fed out as slaughter animals. But the beef in all these animals is of high quality and has no bearing on taste tenderness etc. When possible they make good freezer beef for the owner. With mixed twins, if the bull calf survives to 60 days gestation and then is resorbed, the heifer calf’s reproductive organs have already been affected and it may be born a freemartin without a live twin. As early as 60 days gestation nonetheless. In the purebred industry you may want to have freemartins, checked out as about ten percent will have a complete uterus and will breed. This is one other criterion to consider when selecting your replacement heifers. At the same time, your other heifers can be palpated for small pelvises, unwanted pregnancies, scarring, or internal abscesses. This will hopefully eliminate problems down the line and increase the longevity of your heifers when they calve or are sold as breeding replacements. 7

Associated Herds An associated herd is used to report cattle that are managed together. The genetic evaluation is built on comparisons of cattle that are managed together in the same environment. Larger groups allow for more direct animal comparisons. If cattle are owned by separate entities but are managed in common, it is important that they are reported using an associated herd so that they are compared with all other

cattle under the same management. Please note that each member is responsible for enrolling their females. Ultrasound Ultrasound data should be collected on Charolais animals between 320 and 430 days of age. It is highly recommended that the data be collected by a UGC certified technician and processed through an approved lab. This data is used in the calculation of Charolais carcass EPD. Animals to be scanned should also have weaning information reported through the CCA program. Please

note the importance of proper animal identification on the barn sheets. Technicians can be found by visiting www.ultrasoundbeef.com Carcass EPD The CCA has released a new carcass evaluation conducted by AGI. This new evaluation is very similar to past evaluations as it includes carcass and ultrasound data, as well as pedigree and performance data. The evaluation provides EPD for Carcass Weight (CW), Rib‐Eye Area (REA), Fat Thickness (Fat), Marbling Level (Marb) and Lean Yield (LY).

The CCA will be building an initial training population through the efforts of both the CCA and the American International Charolais Association. Once we have established a training population specific to our Charolais herd we can apply this information and work towards a genomically enhanced EPD. Genomically enhanced EPDs will ultimately increase the accuracies on young animals with no or few progeny.

Troupeaux associés Un troupeau associé à un autre indique que les bovins sont tous sous la même régie. Les évaluations génétiquessont basées sur la comparaison des animaux qui sont dans un même environnement. Plus le group est nombreux plus la comparaison est précise. Il est important de déclarer les troupeaux associés dont tous les animaux sont gérés en commun, surtout s’ils sont la propriété de différentes personnes. Veuillez noter que chaque membre (propriétaire) est toutefois responsable de l’enrôlement de leurs femelles respectives.

Échographie de carcasse Les données échographiques doivent être recueillies sur les animaux Charolais entre 320 à 430 jours dʹâge. Il est fortement recommandé que les données soient recueillies par un technicien certifié UGC et traitées par un laboratoire agréé. Ces données sont utilisées dans le calcul des EPDde carcasse Charolais. Les animaux qui font partis de l’analyse,devront également avoir au poids au sevrage déclaréà l’association Charolais. Veuillez noter qu’il est important de bien identifier les animaux sur la feuille qu’utilise le technicien afin que les données soient cohérentes avec les registres de l’association.

Cette nouvelle évaluation est très similaire aux évaluations antérieures puisquʹelle comprend les données de carcasse directes et celles obtenues par échographie, ainsi que des données généalogiques et de performance. Lʹévaluation fournit des EPD pour poids de carcasse (CW), œil de longe (REA), épaisseur de la graisse (Fat), niveau de persillage (Marb) et niveau de rendement (LY).

OBITUARY

Brian McTavish 1949 – 2014

Brian was born in Moosomin, Saskatchewan, to Roy and Vi McTavish. He was raised on the family farm. He started school at Woodlands District and completed his schooling at Moosomin McNaughton High School. After graduation he went to Winnipeg and earned his Journeyman’s Electrician certificate at Red River College. It was in Winnipeg Brian met Betty Ann Usiski. They married on June 24th, 1972. Right from the start they knew they would move back to Moosomin to farm, which they did in the harvest of 1974. There they raised their 3 children. Brian was a member of the Board of Directors for the Saskatchewan Charolais Association from 1995 to

2001. While serving on the board, he looked after the Agribition show catalogue for the Charolais breed. Before this was computerized, this was a huge job. He became councillor for the RM of Moosomin in 2005 and served until 2012. At the same time he served as RM rep for APAS when it was first established. In October 2012 he became Reeve. He truly enjoyed this involvement in his community. Brian was an avid curler, participating in several different leagues and bonspiels over the years. He was always very involved with Jared and Sean in hockey and Tanis in her curling. He also loved to camp, his pride and joy was his fifth wheel camper purchased in 2008. This allowed him more time to get away, travel, fish and camp with neighbours, he looked forward to this

time every year. Brian’s primary passion was farming. He wasn’t just a farmer but a steward of the land and his livestock. He felt a responsibility to future generations. He started McTavish Charolais 25 years ago. In 2013, Brian and Betty were awarded the Saskatchewan Charolais Honour Scroll in recognition in their involvement in the Association in the promotion of the Charolais breed in Saskatchewan. His life dream for his children came true, farming with his sons and seeing Tanis succeed. Brian is survived by his wife Betty Ann, and their children, Tanis, Jared (Heather) and Sean (Darcelle) and their five grandsons: Rylan, Austen, Hayden, Sawyer and Emmett and extended family.

Reg Phaff 1927-2014

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Reginald “Reg” Phaff on Thursday, February 27th, 2014 at the age of 86 years. Reg will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 61 years, Lorna; his sons, Kenneth (Cindy) and Stephen (Debra); and his four grandchildren, Bryce (Naz), Brianne (Nick), Colin (Cheryl), and Wyatt

(Jennifer); as well as one great‐ granddaughter, Myah. Reg was born, raised and educated in Hatton, Saskatchewan. He married Lorna in 1952 and they raised their two sons in Medicine Hat. Because of his passion for bodybuilding, he owned and operated several gyms. As a weight lifter he was very successfully in many competitions. After bookkeeping in Medicine Hat and ranching near Maple Creek, Reg and Lorna purchased what would become

the P Bar 3 Charolais Ranch, located near Irvine. This ranch became one of the most successful purebred Charolais cattle operations in Canada. To this day, P Bar 3 genetics can be found throughout North America and Europe. Reg and Lorna retired to Medicine Hat in 1997, after selling the P Bar 3 Charolais operation. In their retirement years, they enjoyed many trips abroad. Reg also played the organ and entertained in various seniors’ residences.

The Canadian National Charolais Show is being hosted by Manitoba November 6th to 8th, Manitoba Livestock Expo, Brandon Plan to be a part. 30

The Wilgenbusch family always put forth some excellent hospitality, the night before and again before and after the sale, with many different kinds of home made pie and great beef meals. Besides the hospitality, they also put forth a great set of bulls and this year was no different. With Ultrasound data and Leptin testing done there is plenty of information. Both two year olds and yearlings, red factor and whites saw purebred and commercial producers from five provinces, one state and Mexico on the buyers’ list. 2014 Spring Bull Sale Summary According to statistics, the 2014 Spring Bull Sales had the highest overall sales average and total gross dollars in the 33 years the Charolais Banner has been compiling bull sale results. There were 76 sales reporting in 2014, one less than 2013, with the overall average up $674. There were 76 more lots selling and an increase in total gross dollars by $2,106,900. A quick overview shows that of the 66 sales reporting in both 2013 and 2014, 89% of those sales had an increase in their

overall sale gross. There were 35 sales grossing more than $150,000. There were 25 sales selling more than 40 lots. Mature bulls were down in average $6718 with 5 2/5 less lots selling in 2014. There were 62 more two‐year‐old bull lots selling in 2014 with an increase in average of $576. 78% of sales with two‐year‐olds selling had a two‐year‐old average above $4000 compared to 56% in 2013. There were 41 1/6 more yearling lots selling in 2014, increasing the overall

average by $675. Of all the sales with yearling bulls selling, 62% of the yearling sales averaged over $4000 compared to 33% in 2013.

The Canadian Charolais Youth Association Conference and Show COMPETITION AND SHOW RULES AND REGULATIONS COMPETITION RULES 1. Entry The Canadian Charolais Youth Association (CCYA) show and Conference is open to all youth members in Canada or foreign countries who are registered members of their respective associations. Canadian members must have paid their $15.00 active membership fee to the CCYA or their $25 active membership fee to the CCA to be able to participate in the conference (see http://youth.charolais.com/membership for more information). CCYA members may include their $15 membership fee with their application form for the Conference and Show. Registration for the Conference enters the youth members in all competitions. First time Conference participants will receive a $50 rebate of their registration fees. 2. Ages The age division for the competitions will be: Junior: 12 and under; Intermediates: 13-16 years; Seniors; 17-21 years, as of January 1 of the current year. 3. Photography Competition The photography competition is open to all participants. The photograph must be taken by the youth member exhibiting it. Photos should depict the purebred or commercial Charolais industry. Points will be awarded on clarity, quality, originality and relationship to the Charolais industry. Presentation and/or framing is not permitted. Photos must not be larger than 8” X 10”. Bring your photo entry to the conference and enter when you register. Only one photo per exhibitor will be accepted. Pictures entered in past competitions will not be accepted. 4. Art Competition The art competition is open to all participants. All artwork must be done by the youth submitting it. The artwork must depict something directly related to the Charolais industry. It cannot contain photographs. Any medium may be used: pencil, crayon, pastel, paint, fabric, wood, clay, etc. Originality is the key. Presentation and/or framing are encouraged but no points are awarded on this basis. Artwork must be brought to the conference and entered when you register. Only one entry per exhibitor will be accepted. The highest placing between photography and artwork competitions will be used in aggregate and scholarship points. Artwork entered in past competitions will not be accepted. 5. Showmanship Competition The showmanship competition will be divided into the three age categories. Animals will be made available for participants not exhibiting in conformation. If the youth have their own animal, it must be used for the competition. Showmanship will be a non-fit/dry-brush competition; animals that have been fitted will not be allowed to be used for the competition. The assigned ring marshal’s decision will be final. 6. Team Grooming Competition The team grooming competition will be twenty minutes in length. Teams of junior, intermediate and senior participants will be arbitrarily made prior to the show. Yearling heifers will be used exclusively for the competition. Heifers are to be washed and clipped prior to the competition but dressing prior to commencement will result in disqualification. Teams will be evaluated on the use of equipment, knowledge, skill, involvement, final appearance and presentation of the heifer. The judge will select up to three teams in each split to bring their heifer back to compete for the overall title. Teams that qualify for the final, if available, will have an hour to groom an unclipped animal. If not available, teams will have an additional 5 minutes per team to touch up the original animal in the show ring. The use of unethical or artificial fitting practices will result in immediate disqualification and under no circumstances will be tolerated. 7. Team Selling/Judging Competition All participants will choose between team marketing and team judging. This will be chosen at the time of registration. Teams will be made up of two members who are in the same age category. Teams will be made prior to the conference, but the committee reserves the right to modify teams based on actual attendance. a. Team Selling. Each team will have approximately 5-7 minutes to sell an animal, embryo, semen or related product to a prospective buyer. Teams will be judged on knowledge, enthusiasm, group cooperation/involvement, and overall ability to convince and sell. b. Team Judging The hosting province has the authority to choose if one or two classes will be judged. If expected to judge two classes, in the first class one team member will be responsible for the ring-person duties and the other will place the class and give a set of oral reasons to the audience. In the second class the team members will alternate positions. 8. Individual Marketing Individual marketing evaluates participant’s ability to promote a product (or service). Time is given at the conference; participants are not permitted to use/submit materials in advance. c. Junior: Individuals are given a choice of individual selling, or developing promotional item - one of: a radio ad, or a magazine ad. Tape recorders and art supplies will be provided for the ads. Forty-five (45) minutes will be given for individuals to prepare their marketing campaign. d. Intermediate: Participants will be required to compare and critique two advertisements of the same medium, and will be judged on logic and effectiveness. Participants will be judged in originality, and content. Forty-five (45) minutes will be given for individuals to complete their questionnaire. e. Senior: Individuals will be required to develop a marketing plan for a specific scenario. The product/service will be selected by the organising committee prior to the conference. A set of questions will be provided as a template for the plan, as well as necessary background information. Forty-five (45) minutes will be given for individuals to prepare their marketing plan. Plans will be submitted in writing and will be judged on logic, clarity, creativity and originality, and effectiveness. For Intermediates and Seniors the top 5 participants, based on their written marketing piece, may be asked to return and given a face-to-face sales pitch to the judge. 9.Keep and Cull Competition Participants will compete individually and learn the basics of keeping females in the herd on the criteria of past performance and appearance. Members will be given EPD’s and a farm based scenario according to the competitors age category, as developed by the judge prior to competition, and will be expected to select three females from a pen of five. A class will be held by the judge prior to the competition to explain the fundamentals of EPD’s and what the industry is looking for in today’s producing animals. 10. Judging Competition Members will compete individually and will judge classes of steers, females, and bull calves. Junior participants will be expected to complete written reasons on three classes and oral reasons on one class, as determined by the organising committee. The time limit for each class will be 20 minutes. The Intermediate and Senior participants will complete the same classes and be required to submit placings cards as well as complete oral reasons on all three classes. 11. Oral Reasons Members will compete individually by presenting their oral reasons on previously judged steers, yearling heifers or bull calves. Junior members will only complete one set of reasons on a chosen class. Only junior members will be allowed to refer to their judging cards while giving their oral presentation. There will be a time limit of two minutes. 12. Herdsmanship Competition The organising committee will group youth exhibiting with those youth without cattle at the Conference and Show. This allows for juniors without cattle to help those with cattle and to meet new people. All members are encouraged to help keep their alley swept and clean and to help one another out. Teams will be limited to a maximum of six members and will be made by organisers according to the youth members’ experience/age and the number of animals to be cared for by the team. A select group of unknown judges will be monitoring the activities of the participants and will compare notes to pick the winners. All families with cattle will be in the same herdsman group unless notified by the families that this is unwanted. Farm signs will not be permitted. 13. The Grant Moffat Memorial Ambassador Award Members will be evaluated on the helpfulness, willingness, encouragement, spirit, and general attitude towards the conference and fellow participants. A select group of unknown judges will be monitoring the activities of the participants and will compare notes to pick the winners. Members will be

evaluated in their respective age categories. A ballot will be filled out by CCYA members attending the Conference and Show and will also be used in the judging process. 14. Education Awards Education award monies will be awarded on an overall point basis at the conference and show. Eligibility requirements are listed in the CCYA Policies and Procedures, section 21. The amount of education award monies will be $1800, with $1000 for 1st, $500 for 2nd and $300 for 3rd place, based on the breakdown of the following competitions: Judging & Oral reasons 35%, Ambassador 20%, Showmanship 10%, Photography or Art (best of) 5%, Keep & Cull 10%, Individual Marketing 15%, Essay Competition 5%. 15. Aggregate Competition Juniors: Points will be awarded as follows: photography/art – best 5%, judging 25%, showmanship 10%, herdsmanship 5%, individual marketing 10%, team marketing or team judging 10%, keep/cull 5%, ambassador 10%, team grooming 10%, oral reasons 5% and 5% for bringing cattle. Intermediates & Seniors: Points will be awarded as follows: photography/art – best 5%, judging 30%, showmanship 10%, herdsmanship 5%, individual marketing 10%, team marketing or team judging 10%, keep/cull 5%, ambassador 10%, team grooming 10%, and 5% for bringing cattle. The first and second place winners in each division will be awarded belt buckles to recognise their accomplishments. Additional monies may be awarded at the discretion of the Conference and Show organising committee. 16. Conformation Classes Offered I. PUREBRED a. Bull Calf born in 2014 b. Heifer Calf born in 2014 c. Yearling Heifer born in 2013 d. Female born in 2012 with natural 2014 calf e. Female born in 2011 or previous with natural 2014 calf f. Champion & Reserve Purebred Female (top 2 animals from classes I (b-e)) II. COMMERCIAL (50% Charolais or visible Charolais cross) a. Heifer Calf born in 2014 b. Yearling Heifer born in 2013 c. Female born in 2012 with natural 2014 calf d. Female born in 2011 or previous with natural 2014 calf e. Champion & Reserve Commercial Female (top 2 animals from classes II (a-d)) III. SPECIAL CLASSES a. Best purebred, designated red factor animal in the show. b. Market steer (50% Charolais or visible Charolais cross) Supreme Champion Charolais Female will then be selected from the top 2 animals from classes I(f) and II(e). Entry deadline is June 15, 2014 and no entries postmarked after this date will be accepted. 17. Prizes All prizes and placings will be announced only at the banquet on the final night, with the exception of conformation. CONFERENCE AND SHOW REGULATIONS 1. Absolutely NO parent/adult participation will be allowed. Barn bosses and ambassador volunteers will be monitoring the barn, wash rack, and tie-out areas at all times. Any parent/adult participation may result in a deduction of aggregate and scholarship points from the youth member in question. Senior members are encouraged to help the junior members. This includes the set-up and take-down of the stall. 2. All purebred animals entered must be registered with the CCA. Crossbred heifers do not need to be registered. Calves should be registered and must be tattooed by show day. No tattooing will be permitted on the grounds. Original registration certificates must accompany purebred cattle to the show, including all calves. Tattoos will be checked upon arrival. 3. Members showing animals that are owned by them or their family can enter as many head as they choose, keeping in mind that they are responsible for showing their entries. Members who cannot bring their own cattle but wish to enter the conformation show may enter an animal belonging to another Charolais breeder. However, members entering cattle not owned by them or their family are limited to only one entry. 4. Animals must be shown by the youth member entering them unless more than one entry is in the class. 5. There is no limit placed on the number of entries per class, however, the youth will be responsible for finding other youth to help them show. 6. The entry fee is $15 per class. Calves may be split off cows, but in the case of a pair that goes on to the finale, the heifer calves will be ineligible to be shown in the heifer calf division. 7. Classes will be determined after the entry deadline and will contain approximately eight to ten animals. 8. All animals are expected to be broke to lead. If in a case where the animal in question poses a threat to the safety of the other participants, the owner will be asked to remove the animal from the show barn. The Barn Boss will have final say. 9. A bedding base will be provided to all participants. Exhibitors will be responsible for their own feed for the duration of the conference. Night tie-outs will be available, as well as pens for nurse cows. 10. For all CCYA members the consumption of alcoholic beverages is strictly prohibited on show grounds or during any show activities. Failure to comply with this rule will result in immediate disqualification and removal from the remainder of the Conference and Show. 11. Unethical fitting practices are not allowed in any of the competitions. This includes the use of artificial tail heads, and artificial fillers such as stomach filling; unless deemed necessary by a veterinarian. 12. Surgical alterations are not permitted on any animal being exhibited, unless a valid veterinarian certificate is produced that explains the reason for them. 13. All participants are expected to participate in all events, unless illness forces them out of competition. Youth not participating in all events will lose aggregate and scholarship points. Any youth that chooses not to participate in all events may be disqualified from all competitions and show, and forfeit any prizes or awards that they may have otherwise earned. 14. The show shirt is expected to be worn for conformation, showmanship and team grooming. Name tags are to be worn at all times. 15. The hosting CCYA Conference and Show Organizing Committee, Agricultural Society, or any of the show advisors or volunteers is not responsible for loss, injury or accident to animals, property or humans for the duration of the Conference and Show. 16. First time participants will receive a $50 rebate from the CCYA National Board after the conference, but should pay the full registration amount for the conference. 17. By submitting the attached entry form and signing the Code of Conduct, the youth member agrees to abide by all the above rules and regulations for the competitions and the cattle show. A group of adult advisors, including the Youth Coordinator have been appointed by the hosting Conference and Show Organizing Committee to enforce the rules and regulations. The hosting CCYA Conference and Show Organizing Committee has the power to, at any time, intervene to settle disputes or clarify the rules.

INSTRUCTIONS • All youth members attending the show are required to pay their annual CCYA membership of $15.75 which funds the semi-annual newsletter, purchase incentive program, leadership scholarship and essay competition. Please enclose a separate cheque for this amount payable to the Canadian Charolais Youth Association (CCYA). • Animals can be borrowed from a family who does not have a participating youth member, but ONLY ONE (1) animal can be registered per participating member. • Members showing animals owned by them, their family, or a family with a participating youth member can enter multiple animals. • List each entry separately. • Additional livestock entries can be submitted on a separate sheet of paper. • Photocopies of livestock registration papers must accompany entry form. • Please note the changes to this year's rules and regulations and make sure that you have met all of the requirements. • A signed Code of Conduct must accompany all youth member registrations, absence of the signed form will render youth member ineligible to partake in the Conference & Show. • Registration fee is $150 per youth. This includes merchandise, meals for Tuesday lunch through Friday night Banquet and all competitions except the cattle show. Registration fee for Adults includes all meals and banquet ticket. • First-time participants will receive a $50 rebate from the CCYA after the conference, but should pay the full registration amount. • Cheques should be made payable to Canadian Charolais Youth Association.
