With over 6,000 clicks of the shutter, through dozens and dozens of bull pens, picturing is finished for the spring bull sale ads and catalogues. I cannot remember having as nice of a winter for picturing in Western Canada as we had this year. Other parts of Canada have had everything from above average temperatures to big snows and below average temperatures. The lack of moisture in some parts is cause for some concern but, hopefully, it will come as rain and we won’t have to contend with any more snow or ice this winter.

With the mild weather since last fall, it was interesting to find the hair so good in the bull pens this winter. I know breeders have been selecting for good quality hair coats, but with the weather, I wasn’t sure the animals would have grown hair as much as they did. The good haired feeder calves will bring extra dollars from the buyers, so it is important to keep an eye on it.

I know many of you haven’t started calving yet and it is a long time until fall sales but here is something to consider. Last fall I got visiting with a large feedlot operator in Ontario at a pre-sort, pre-vaccinate sale at the start of Beef week in Keady. These Charcross calves were bringing top dollars because of the quality and the strict vaccination protocols they adhere to. As a feedlot operator if they aren’t sure the cattle they are buying have been pre-vaccinated, they will routinely give them a shot of Draxxin and other medications when processing them on entry to reduce sickness. This feedlot man’s concern isn’t just the cost of doing this from his end, but what happens when there is a break in these drugs’ effectiveness or some drug resistance. It would be much better if all calves in the fall were pre-vaccinated before weaning and waterer trained and been on some feed to eliminate the need to do the 8

treatments and to slow the possibility of this happening. He was generous enough to share what they do in their operations.

“Our calf program on receiving is the following: Bovi Gold, Covexin 8, Ivomec, ADE, check for bulls and stags, clean any horns plus pain med, feedlot tags with corresponding CCIA tag and Draxxin. If the cattle are from a back grounding program, we skip the Draxxin. We do not implant calves on arrival but we do afterwards. I see too many problems with steer calves that have been implanted early.

Mainly behavior problems. The implants should be saved for the last 180 days on feed. To be honest, put the dollars into vaccines. A 550 lb. vs a 575 lb calf (the heavier one implanted) brings the same dollars per head.”

“I feel the calf program on the ranch should look like this; Bovi Gold, 8 way, blackleg at branding, no implants from a vaccinated cow.

Another option if the calves stay on the ranch is to wean and start on feed which saves antibiotic usage. Lastly if the calves are going right off the cow at least have the minimum of a Bovi Gold 5 IBR, BVD, PI3, BRSV and what really helps is access to a water bowl and access to dry feed and being fed in a place that the calves can be by themselves. The feed area by themselves with a water bowl and a bunk is really helping these cattle stay stress free. When they get to their new home they know what these scary things are. Also the area by themselves with some human contact will make weaning a very simple process.”

I know what many of you are thinking and yes unless you are selling just your calves in packages and can guarantee the vaccination protocols, you aren’t getting paid for the extra time and effort you put into it. Somehow the industry will have to address this and make positive steps forward. In a perfect world with BIXS or other traceability/herd health programs, we should be able to Charolais Connection • March 2016

identify these calves and eliminate the extra vaccinating and treating routinely done now.

The first Charolais bull sales have been very strong with the demand high and the supply no more than in previous years. Already this spring I have seen some commercial producers buying their first Charolais bull in many years and the bulls going to breed straight black cows. The message is getting through from the order buyers and feedlots that the quality silver calves will bring a premium as well.

We will have a shortage of Charolais bulls when a bigger portion of the cow/calf industry realizes the dollars they are missing out on by not using a Charolais bull. We need more Charolais breeders especially in some areas that are almost void of them. If you have thought about becoming a seedstock producer, I would say there is a great opportunity to get started and have a ready bull market moving forward.

So as we get into more of the bull sales, if Craig Scott or I can be of any assistance, please don’t hesitate to give us a call. We are always happy to help in any way we can.

Avec plus de 6000 clics de l’obturateur de nos caméras, dans des dizaines et dizaines d’enclos de taureaux. Le montage est terminé pour les annonces de ventes et pour les catalogues. Je ne me souviens pas d’avoir vu un aussi bel hiver dans l’ouest canadien. D’autres régions du Canada ont été au-dessus de la moyenne des températures avec beaucoup de neige. Le manque d’humidité dans certaines régions est sûrement préoccupant, en espérant qu’il sera compensé sous forme de pluie et n’ont pas avoir plus de neige ou de glace. Avec le temps doux qui s’est installé depuis l’automne dernier, il était très intéressant de constater que les taureaux dans les parcs ont une superbe toison cet hiver. Je sais que les éleveurs sélectionnent, pour avoir de bonnes couches de poils, mais je ne suis pas sûr qu’ilsont augmenté comme d’habitude. Car les bons veaux d’embouche avec beaucoup de poils rapportent d’avantage, il est donc important d’en prendre note.

Je sais que plusieurs d’entre vous n’ont pas encore commencé leur saison de vêlage, car cela est très intéressant pour les ventes d’automne et cela est vraiment à considérer.

L’automne dernier j’ai visité un gros parc d’engraissement de l’Ontario, et assisté à un pré-tri de pré-vaccination pour vente qui avait eu lieu en début de semaine du bœuf (Keady) Ces veaux charolais croisés rapportent les plus hauts prix à cause de la qualité et des protocoles de vaccination très stricte à laquelle ils adhèrent. En tant qu’opérateur de parc d’engraissement, s’ils ne sont pas sûr que le bétail qu’ils achètent ont été pré-vacciné, ils vont leur administrer régulièrement une dose de DRAXXIN et d’autres médicaments, lors de leur traitement à l’entrée pour réduire au minimum les maladies. La préoccupation de l’opérateur, est non seulement le coût, mais c’est de savoir s’il y aura une 10

rupture dans l’efficacité des médicaments, mais une résistance à ceux-ci. Il serait beaucoup mieux si tous nos veaux à l’automne étaient pré-vaccinés avant le sevrage et habitué aux abreuvoirs, et à certains aliments, afin d’éliminer de faire un chevauchement de traitements. Il a eu la générosité de partager ses méthodes de travail avec moi. Notre travail à la réception des veaux est le suivant : BOVI GOLD, COVEXIN 8.

IVOMEC, ADE, vérifier les mâles et les mal castrés décorner avec médicament pour la douleur, étiquettes de parcs avec une étiquette et DRAXXIN CCIA correspondant. Si les veaux sont déjà sur un programme connus nous sautons le DRAXXIN. Nous n’implantons pas les veauxà l’arrivée, mais nous le faisons par la suite. Nous voyons trop de problèmes avec les veaux implantés trop tôt.

Principalement des problèmes de comportement. Les implants peuvent être oubliés pour les premiers 180jours. Pour être honnête mettre de l’argent sur les vaccins pour un veau de 550 livres et un veau non implanté de 575 livres il n’y a pas de différence le tout rapporte le même montant d’argent. Sur un programme de vaccination à la ferme il devrait ressembler à ceci : BOVI GOLD, 8 WAY, BLACK LEG TYPE, et pas d’implants d’une vache vaccinée. Une autre option si les veaux demeurent à la ferme, est de sevrer et de commencer l’alimentation, ce qui permet d’économiser sur l’utilisation des antibiotiques. Enfin si les veaux demeurent avec la vache est d’au moins d’avoir le minimum : BOVI GOLD, IBR, BVD, P13, BRSV, et ce qui aide vraiment c’est d’avoir accès aux abreuvoirs, et aux aliments secs où seul les veaux peuvent avoir accès.

Une zone d’alimentation avec accès à l’eau et une bonne litière est un bon remède antistress. Quand ils arrivent dans un nouvel environnement ils connaissent déjà à quoi s’attendent.

peu de contact humain, rendra le processus du sevrage beaucoup plus simple.

Je sais ce que beaucoup d’entre vous en pensent, excepté si vous les vendez tous en même temps, alors vous pouvez garantir le protocole de vaccination, et que vous n’êtes pas payé pour le temps et les efforts que vous y mettez. De toute manière l’industrie devra se pencher sur cette situation pour y apporté que du positif. Dans un monde parfait avec BIXS ou d’autre programmes de santé traçabilité / de troupeau, nous devrions être en mesure d’identifier ces veaux et d’éliminer la vaccination supplémentaire systématique.

Les premières ventes de taureaux charolais ont ététrès fortes et la demande beaucoup plus forte que l’offre.Déjà ce printemps nous avons vu certains producteurs commerciaux acheter leur premier taureau charolais depuis plusieurs années, et utiliser ces taureaux sur des vaches noirs. Le message passe par les acheteurs à qui leurs veaux vont rapporter lors de la vente. Nous aurons une pénurie de taureaux charolais quand une plus grande partie de l’industrie vache/veaux, réaliseront qu’il passe à côté d’argent supplémentaire en n’utilisant pas un taureau charolais.

Nous avons besoin d’éleveurs charolais car dans certaines régions ils sont inexistants. Si vous pensez devenir un éleveur pur-sang, je dirais qu’il y a un bon marché et à la hausse.

While markets are nearly impossible to predict at times, the proven performance from your Charolais bull is predictable.

The Charolais herd has made genetic improvements that add value. Lowered birth weights, increased weaning and yearling weights all add value to your bottom line. While you cannot control or always predict the market, you can control your calf crop. Efficient char-cross calves have the ability to pad your wallet with their naturally heavier weaning weights and market premiums. Charolais influenced cattle are yielding premiums at the markets across the country; it pays to sell Charolais influenced cattle.

---Pourquoi. Pourquoi est la source de plusieurs questions. Lorsqu’on considère une réponse, on se demande “pourquoi”; pourquoi ce taureau et non pas celui-ci?

Pourquoi cette race et non-pas celle-ci? On me demande souvent; « pourquoi utiliser la race Charolais? » Et ma réponse est simple; « Pourquoi pas? » Il est bien entendu qu’il est impossible de prédire le prix des marchés, pourtant la performance d’un taureau Charolais est prédictible. La race en générale a pris des mesures d’amélioration génétique qui vous assure une valeur ajoutée. En particulier, les poids à la naissance ont été diminués, tout en augmentant les poids au sevrage et les poids à un an – un scenario qui affectera vos profits d’une façon positive.

Les prix de marchés sont hors de votre contrôle, mais la qualité de vos veaux est entre vos mains. Dick and Sandra Hamilton, Windy Ridge Farms Ltd. operate a successful cattle and grain operation near Darlingford, Manitoba, with their son Michael and his fiance Kayla. Their eldest son, Matthew Hamilton lives with his fiancé Stacey in Toronto, where he is finishing school.

They run 270 cows and this is about their capacity for pasture. The winter feed isn’t the issue at this point. They run two calving periods. About 40 cows calve from October 15 to December 10th. “It gives us forty nice big calves and we background them to 1000 lb. and they go to Ontario. It gives us a more spread out cash flow.

I don’t mind calving that time of year, things are pretty much cleaned up and it gives us a month gap to when the main herd starts calving.

“You know if you are going to a sale, you might as well buy a load,” Sandra adds with a laugh.

“The whiter the better is what our Ontario buyer says.”

“We usually have four loads go to Ontario each spring. This year one load had a high average of 1080 lb.”

“We run 260-270 cows but through BSE we probably got to 325 cows. We survived, but there were a couple of pretty tough years. The first 1000 lb. calves we sold went for $.45 per pound. It was a good thing oats were cheap.” Dick remembers. “So we ended up fattening all of the calves for

cows and we go to see them and there isn’t a white cow there. We are so disappointed. Now when we phone to arrange to have a look at them, we ask what colour they are,” says Sandra. The Hamiltons strive for a uniform herd and inquiring about the colour of a package of females is part of that uniformity.

“I phoned a guy with a hundred Charolais cows for sale and asked him how many were white. He replied there were five or six,” Dick recalls.

“They get off the truck and I think ‘What is this?’” exclaims Sandra. “We don’t mind a little gold or tan, but

reds just don’t fit in to our herd. We like an even coloured pen.”

When the calves go to pasture at the start of June, the Hamiltons try to have them as vigorous as possible, usually 250-400 pounds. The calves are weaned in mid-October between 600-700 pounds. “We get used to what our cattle look like and when you get out and compare, it is so surprising,” shares Sandra.

“We feed our cattle well. They get what they need to grow and we get paid by the pound,” Dick adds.

“We have them on creep feed in April and May. It is pretty light, but it keeps them out of the way when continued on page 26

the bulls are put in with the cows. When we breed inside the pens, it has saved many accidents. We learned to do it to protect the calves. It has made a big difference,” tells Dick.

“Even when we are taking our calves to the community pasture, ours are already so much bigger. Genetics, creep feeding and early calving all contribute to this.,” says Sandra.

“We love to talk cows, but this time of year (interview was in August), the grain sort of takes over. It gets a little overwhelming doing both grain and cows. In the spring we are busy with the cows and we don’t get seeding real early,” tells Sandra.

“Those years when it was too wet to seed, those guys that only had grain would get out there in the mud, getting stuck and complaining. I just told them they should have a couple hundred cows and they wouldn’t be worried about the fields until they dried up,” Dick laughs.

Dick and Mike do the swathing and seeding. Sandra and

Kayla do most of the baling and combining. Everyone pitches in to get the work done. The discussion quickly turns to whoever swathes the canola, should have to combine it and how having a cook would really help in the busiest seasons of the year. The laughter around their table is quick and free-flowing, showing just how much they enjoy their work.

They crop about 2700 acres and all four of them make their income from the farm. No one has an off-farm job and they just recently incorporated as part of a succession plan.

Dick’s dad passed away when Dick was only 23. He didn’t have any brothers and it was up to him and Sandra to keep things going. His Dad had 30 Shorthorns, but they switched to a Charolais bull in 1977 and haven’t had anything since.

Dick has been farming since 1973 when he was still in school. They had 40 cows when Dick’s father, James died in 1982 and slowly started to build up the herd. “When we continued on page 30

❝ Genetics, creep feeding and early calving all contribute to this…,❞ “The first load should go out in the first couple weeks in January. The load will be the 40 fall calves and the biggest of the spring calvers to make up the load. So some of our January calves will sell in January at a 1000 pounds. The March calves will go in March. They will eat about 20 lb. of oats a day. We crush it and mix it with the better hay and fill a couple of self feeders.” got to 100 we thought, wow, this is a pile!” At the time, land was really hard to get. Now the farm rents more and owns nine quarters. Half of the seeded acres are canola every year, 1000 acres are wheat and 300 acres are barley or oats.

This year the farm has 80 acres of corn for silage for the first time.

“The barley and oats are for feed. The feeder cattle won’t get any corn silage this year, we will give it to the cows until we are set up better for that. The calves here are already on creep feed, when the calves come home from Woodlands (a community pasture that used to be a PFRA pasture) towards the end of October, they will go in the pen and be on self feed and the cows will go to fall grazing. They are so early they need to be weaned by then anyway.” They do this to prevent losing pounds during the critical weaning period.

They aren’t afraid of work, using a lot of square bales and individual pens when calving. “It was definitely difficult when the boys were playing hockey, but it is what we do.”

They start breeding on the first of April. The cows go to Woodlands pasture around the first of June. “The calves are all tagged, pre-vaccinated with Calfguard 2 and given Ticlaserol at birth. The Ticlaserol is for coccidiosis and cryptosporidiosis. Crypto can be really bad. We think we got a bit of it from somewhere during the BSE years, we aren’t really sure where, but the Ticlaserol has really helped to clean it right up.

We shouldn’t have to give them Calfguard 2 because they should be covered by the cows getting Scourboss 9, but rotavirus can come up through the manure and the Calfguard covers it. When you calve in tight spaces, you have to protect yourself and we are pretty safe with this protocol. The calves also get Enforce at 5 days in both nostrils. As soon as 30-40 days are up, they get Pyramid 5,” explains Dick.

“Castration is done in May by pinching them with a burdizzo. They get a blackleg and 8-Way at this time, too.

I like to see the vigour in the calves. I know banding is quicker, but they seem to grow better if you can leave them until they are three months old before we pinch them. I think it is to our advantage, we get pounds and they are healthier. By then they are a big strong animal and if we get bad weather, they can take it. We don’t put the CCIA RFID buttons on until they are going to pasture. They get a booster shot when they come home from pasture.”

“We have our own pasture in Woodlands and get to take our own bulls. They are mostly bred when they go, but it is a requirement of the pasture that bulls be with them. We send three, two younger ones and one mature bull for the 120 cows. We have enough bulls at home for 25 cows per bull for the seven weeks before they go to pasture,” says Dick.

“The cows are vaccinated before breeding with Express 10 and Vitamin A. All of our cows get Rumensin all winter and it sure seems to make a

difference in their overall health. We just started a few years ago and they seem so much healthier. They tell us ‘healthier stomach, healthier cows, healthier fetus.’ It just helps them digest the food better.”

It’s not only grain that makes them do well, it’s the little things in there that make a difference. The feeders get 32% Beef Builder and Rumensin mixed in with the crushed oats right from the start. You only want them to get a pound a day. So as they start to eat more, you have to keep calculating what they are getting and cut back on the 32% Beef Builder and Rumensin. If they are on Rumensin they can’t get coccidiosis even as large feeders. It is

preventative, it isn’t a cure. If it is in their stomach, that bug can’t exist. I think it helps with crypto too. They are kind of related, crypto is a bug it isn’t a virus. It definitely holds it down in the cows. They can hold it in their stomach for years and years and every time they pass manure it is on the ground and the calf can pick it up.

It’s kind of like spraying wild oats, the more you hold them down, the less of them there are out there. It has made a huge difference.”

“They used to tell us to just spread them out, get them out of the pens.

That only helped minimally and if you got a heavy snow storm while they were spread all over you had another problem. Now we have gone the opposite. We keep them confined, keep it clean, keep them well vaccinated and we can control everything else. Now if there is a storm, something we can’t control, those calves are all inside. We use a lot of straw.”

“We like bigger birth weight bulls and that saves us some money because they are not in as much demand. We go up to 110 lb. We bring in replacement females and it helps to keep us going to the same purebred continued on page 34

They watch the grain markets and watching the cow market is interesting for them

The bulls all have to be semen tested and trichomonisis tested to go to the pasture. They pull them from the pasture on September 10. We either have to pick them up or they put them in a small paddock. It is a real struggle to keep the bulls away from the cows in the fall when you don’t want to be feeding them. We keep the bulls in pens of three or four.

We put two yearlings with one older quiet one, so they can have enough space that they can both eat and not let the big guy get it all. Shorter breeding periods are less labour but you need more space at calving time.

Social media was invented to improve the connectivity we have with our friends, neighbours, customers, and an infinite amount of strangers. The irony on the social media highway is the harder we try to connect the more disconnected we become. The volumes of useless gossip, sensationalism and misinformation have turned many of us into cynics and skeptics impacting the original intention of social media in the first place.

The cluttering of content driven by the informal competition to get more Likes, Shares, or Retweets has become an official pastime for many users.

Whether you like it or not, one fact about social media remains true; it’s here to stay. Therein lies the opportunity.

Whether you use Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat, or any other trending software, you have a huge opportunity to reach your customers. Social media can be a very effective marketing outlet to help you sell something. Some sell tickets (like Agribition), some sell ideas (like political pundits) and others sell cattle. Either way, people build social networks to sell one thing or another.

If you are going to play in this domain you must have one goal: get noticed. There are some best practices you can employ when making posts on any social media platform.

Be authentic Authenticity is the best way to grow the number of followers you have.

Remember, the basis of the medium is about talking to your friends; be who you are. The more authentic you are, the faster your user base will grow.

Complement this by acknowledging other’s content and reposting and liking their posts. Being authentic is more than just talking about yourself, it is also about showing interest in others, too.

Include photos or hot links in all that you post. Use a catchy photo to 38

grab viewer’s attention, and then redirect them to your show catalogue, website, or some other location where they can look at the cattle in greater detail. Remember, social media is about people. The most popular post for Agribition in 2015 included an iconic photo of a beef show. It should be no surprise the horseman stole the show.

They are light, humorous, and require direct engagement and sharing. The intent of this strategy is to encourage those who follow you to help spread the word. Some organizations use contesting to strike engagement.

Although effective, contesting objectives are predictable and are met with mixed results and some sites have tight rules about contesting.

Focus on a call to action that incorporates your authenticity and anchor it with a great photo.

Avoid negativity Negative comments and offensive language works in politics and it sells newspapers, but it doesn’t attract the

nature of your content.

Frequency If you plan to post for a specific event like a bull sale, be mindful of the frequency to which you post as well. Your friends and followers want to hear what you are up to, but they don’t want to hear about it all the time. Make sure your posts are timely and meaningful.

Networking Social media platforms offer the illusion people are friends and they are truly connected. Researchers recently identified most Facebook users only have 4 ‘true’ friends within their Facebook base.

Strike a balance of social media interactions and face to face contact with people and your network will grow even faster.

Treatments for Scours other than Antibiotics Roy Lewis, DVM

Producers often look for the magic bullet (an antibiotic) when it comes to scours treatments. In reality although helpful if a bacteria is involved, more commonly the other treatments given are most likely to help with the cure. I always say if I only had one thing to treat scours with it would be electrolytes. This article will focus on the “other" more effective treatments.

Although the infectious cause of scours whether it be a virus (rota or corona) or bacteria (ecoli or salmonella or clostridial) or a protozoa (cryptosporidiosis), it is often the dehydration and electrolyte imbalances from the fluid losses which kills the calf.

Fluid and electrolyte replacement is by far the most important treatment when it comes to scours. The calf is both loosing tremendous amounts of water and electrolytes out the back end but if really depressed sucking is also diminished. A normal 90-100 pound calf needs four to five liters of fluids daily for maintenance or ten percent of its body weight. In order to grow and do well a healthy calf takes on more than that. If dehydrated we must add in more to allow it to catch up so to speak. Standard recommendation on a scouring calf is one and a half to two liters up to four times daily.

There are several very good brands of electrolytes on the market so see which one your veterinarian carries and recommends. They are balanced with the main electrolytes being Na, Cl and K as well as varying amounts of dextrose for energy. The high energy (HE) electrolytes are especially important to use if the calf has lost body weight or is going to be on electrolytes for an extended period of time. Since there is no protein in the electrolytes, we must not give electrolytes as the sole source of nutrients for more than two days 46

otherwise weightloss will become a major problem. Getting the calf back onto milk even at every other feeding will be beneficial even though the scours may not have fully cleared yet.

Don’t mix milk and electrolytes at the same feeding. The electrolytes by diluting the milk it interferes with the clotting mechanism forming the curds and whey. This will aggravate the diarrhea even further.

Electrolytes come in individual packages or containers holding up to several gallons of powdered concentrated electrolytes. Follow the instructions closely to get the right dilution and seal the container well between uses. I don’t recommend home made electrolytes as a mistake in formulation can cause a calf to become too alkalotic, too acidotic or give them salt poisoning. The better quality electrolytes have been specially researched and formulated to provide electrolytes in the right proportions.

The only time I personally break from this routine is a calf that is very acidotic. An acidotic calf will be very weak and staggery with a drunken stupor. I treat only initially with one tablespoon of straight baking soda in a small amount of water. Baking soda or sodium bicarbonate is a strong base so will help neutralize the acid.

The electrolytes will do this too but require the calf’s body to convert more bicarbonate and the process takes longer. After the initial bout of baking soda follow up with your regular electrolytes.

Only do this on the very acidotic calves. Definitely go over with your veterinarian the electrolytes they use and in what situations they give them plus the amounts number of treatments per day, etc.

Anytime you catch a calf to treat it for scours electrolytes are good to give even the one time. Products like keopectate and other stool hardeners can be mixed in to help prevent fluid Charolais Connection • March 2016

loss out the back end. Some of the scour boluses will have these mixed in as well. The problem with scour boluses is the tablets drop into the rumen which isn’t fully functioning yet. Also the intestines ability to absorb is compromised so it is best to use injectable products including antibiotics where possible.

If the scours lasts for more than a few days the natural bacterial organisms may be killed and must be reintroduced. There are a number of very good commercial probiotic products out there which provide large numbers of lactobacillus and streptococcus organisms. These will help digestion get back too normal.

Again they are more important than antibiotics. One must watch to not overtreat with antibiotics as they may themselves wipe out the normal gut flora (organisms).

Always keep the calves and their mothers isolated in an area away from the calving herd where it is warm dry and preferably stress free. Use a different esophageal feeder for the scouring calves and the newborn ones. Disinfect everything inbetween usages and change coveralls after treating the scouring calves as well as dip your boots. Farmers can themselves be the biggest spread of scours around the farmyard.

Another method is to deal with any calving cows first before you begin treatments on the scouring calves.

If calves get dehydrated to the point where their eyes sink into their heads they are greater than eight to ten percent dehydrated and oral electrolytes alone will not get them back to normal so this is where intravenous fluids may be necessary.

One can also give nonsteroidal antinflammatories such as banamine or metacam to help with the shock toxemia (these must be prescribed by your veterinarian). The kidneys must continued on page 48

The New Year brings some new requirements under Canada’s Code of Practice for the Care and Handling of Beef Cattle. Effective January 1, 2016, Canadian beef producers are required to use pain control, in consultation with your veterinarian, to mitigate pain associated with dehorning calves after horn bud attachment (2-3 months of age) or when castrating bulls older than nine months of age. Most producers realize that the longer you wait, the more difficult and painful it gets, and the greater the setback in animal growth.

More and more producers are using some form of pain control (especially NSAID drugs like meloxicam, flunixin, ketoprofen) even in younger calves. So the new Code requirements will primarily impact late-born calves, those that escaped early processing, and some seedstock bull calves that fail to measure up. Whether a beef animal is horned or polled is determined by a single gene, so the widespread use of polled genetics has greatly reduced the need to dehorn beef calves. Because polled is dominant to horned, it can take generations before breeders can be confident that a polled line isn’t hiding some recessive horned genetics. At the same time, breeders also need to think about calving ease, growth rate, conformation, carcass merit, and so on. Developing polled lines in traditionally horned breeds is a very slow process. You can’t just take a horned animal and turn it into a polled animal. Until recently.

A research paper entitled “Efficient nonmeiotic allele introgression in livestock using custom endonucleases” (PNAS 110:1652616531) described how American researchers used new tools called 50

“TALENs” and “CRISPERs” to do genetic surgery that replaced horned DNA with polled DNA in bovine cells. This has moved from the research lab into practical application.

Using cells cultured from a Holstein bull, a company called Recombinetics has used this approach to replace the Holstein horned gene with a polled gene from an Angus. The DNA from these “gene edited” cells were moved into bovine eggs to create embryos, transplanted into recipient cows, and healthy polled Holstein bull calves are on the ground. This technology has also been used on beef cattle; the double-muscling gene has been successfully copied from Belgian Blue and pasted into Wagyu and Nellore cattle.

As astonishing as that may sound, remember that polled/horned is a genetically simple trait. It is controlled by a single gene, researchers know where it is located, and the precise mutation responsible for the polled trait is well-characterized. The horned/polled gene also doesn’t seem to interact with other traits. This means that the horned/polled gene could be switched out and replaced like a fuse, with virtually no impact

on other traits.

Double muscling is also a single gene trait. Post-mortem tenderness also appears to be under relatively simple genetic control.

In contrast, “polygenic” traits (things like feed efficiency, growth and reproduction) are governed by a large number of different genes that all have to work together in a coordinated manner. No one knows exactly how many or which genes are actually involved in those traits, or where they are all located. Not only that, but many genes are involved in more than one trait. For example, the genes that determine when and how much estrogen is produced will affect fertility, growth and carcass composition.

Also, sometimes the expression of one gene is affected by another gene.

For instance, a gene coding for estrogen production won’t have any effect if the gene coding for the estrogen receptor is faulty.

Geneticists will need to learn much more about the actual genetic basis of beef production traits and the interactions among them before gene editing technology will be able to continued on page 52

improve things like fertility, feed efficiency, longevity, growth performance or beef quality. For instance, geneticists and meat scientists at the University of Alberta are collaborating on a Beef Cluster project to identify the genes responsible for connective tissue content in beef. That will help genetic improvement, even without gene editing.

Time will tell whether or how gene editing will be regulated or accepted by the public. Traditional breeding aims to make favorable genes more common in the population. Gene editing does the same thing, just a lot faster and more specifically. This type of gene editing didn’t produce a novel trait; it just switched an existing cattle gene with another version. It didn’t introduce new DNA from a different species, as was done with Roundup Ready crops. This may make gene editing technology more acceptable to some people. But the fact that it is all cattle DNA, and all the genes are in 52

their original places, means that geneedited cattle can’t be distinguished from traditionally bred cattle.

For most cattle producers, the spring of 2015 looked promising. Beef prices were at an all-time high, soil moisture conditions were good to excellent and there was no reason to believe that the wet weather we had grown accustomed to would change.

But change it did. For most of the province, the spring of 2015 will go down as one of the driest springs on record, with some areas receiving less than an inch of precipitation from April right through to July.

Financier Warren Buffet said: “Only when the tide goes out do you discover who’s been swimming naked.” This is especially true in grazing management. For many, the spring of 2015 was a wakeup call.

Pastures that had been overgrazed dried out quickly, providing very little forage yield. Some livestock

producers scrambled to find alternate feed supplies; others began culling and reducing herd size and others sought advise about what they could do to address the lack of production on their pastures. What they learned was that droughtproofing a pasture should begin several years before an event.

Those who have experienced droughts in the past understand the importance of maintaining litter cover and carry-over from one year to the next. These producers manage their pastures to increase the soil’s moisture-holding capacity so that rain and melting snow are absorbed where they fall. The approach to achieving this goal varies with each ranching operation, depending on the mix of tame, annual and native pasture. The level of management also varies, from

low-intensity rotational grazing to high-intensity “mob grazing” systems where cattle are moved on a daily basis. Regardless of which system is used, the goals are the same: using the range or pasture to obtain the highest sustainable animal yield without endangering forage plants, soil, water resources and other land attributes.

The key principle is to balance forage supply with livestock production in order to build or maintain litter cover which, in turn, improves the soil’s moisture-holding capacity and prevents runoff and erosion. Over time, these systems increase the productive capacity of the land while increasing its resilience to environmental extreme of too little or too much moisture.

Each year the Canadian Charolais Youth Association works hard to plan a fantastic summer conference for members from all over Canada to attend! This summer the conference will be in Olds, Alberta, and everyone on the national board can’t wait to see what the Alberta planning committee has in store for us! Since there are so many activities and competitions at each conference for members to take part in, it is easy to see how it takes months of planning to organize it all beforehand.

In the summer of 2017, the CCYA conference will be held in Ontario again, and believe it or not, the planning has already begun!

They also organize prizes, clothing, donations, and fundraising, which are all extremely important parts of running the show.

Along with all of the above, they also get the opportunity to organize things like the catering, the banquet, and the keep and cull location, as well as finding and contacting judges for our wide range of competitions!

Reduce Winter Feeding Losses Lorne Klein, PAg, Regional Forage Specialist, Weyburn, AgriviewAgriculture

When stored forages are supplied to livestock during winter, it is inevitable a portion of the feed will be lost. Some may be ground into the soil and snow, and some will be fouled and left uneaten. Losses can be reduced, but there will be extra costs associated with supplying and managing the feed. In years of low forage prices, the extra costs may not be justified, but this winter, the extra time and management could pay off.

In 2005, an Alberta study compared three methods of feeding alfalfa/meadow bromegrass hay: bale unrolling on snow, bale processing on snow and bale processing in feeders.

The snow was a minimum of six inches deep. The hay was restricted to 90 per cent of voluntary intake to ensure the feed left behind was caused by the cow’s inability to consume the feed rather than oversupply. Supplementary straw was provided free-choice.

The hay was fed daily. Bales weighing 1,250 poinds were unrolled or processed into 230 foot lines. Feed weight losses were 12 per cent when unrolled on snow, 19 per cent when

processed on snow and zero percent when processed in a feed bunk.

Compounding the weight losses was feed quality loss. Fine materials, which have a higher feed quality, made up a disproportionate amount of the feed lost. The unrolled bales lost 24.6 per cent of the total bale protein in the snow.

The weight and quality losses increased feeding costs due to the extra feed required as well as the extra machine-hours to deliver the feed. In this trial, which assumed $60 per ton and 180-day feeding period, the extra cost per head was $45 for unrolling and $75 for processing on the snow. Today’s feed costs are considerably higher.

Bale grazing has become a popular method of winter feeding due to its ease and convenience, but the amount of fouled or uneaten forage means it may be somewhat inefficient.

Efficiency can be increased by feeding fewer bales more frequently as the cattle have less opportunity to foul or waste feed. Producers currently providing more than 10 days of feed at a time may want to experiment with three- to five-day allowances.

After several feedings, they should be able to visually judge whether the increased management has resulted in a noticeable feed saving.

Water Requirements for Livestock During Winter LeeAnn Forsythe, DVM MVetSci, Disease Surveillance Veterinarian, Livestock Branch, AgriviewSaskatchewan

During winter, livestock producers should closely monitor the quality and availability of their animals’ water supplies in order to ensure they remain healthy and productive.

An animal’s water requirements are based on it species and breed, activity level and production status (i.e. growth, pregnancy or lactation), as well as environment and climate.

Livestock tend to decrease their water intake during the winter. This can lead them to eat less, which can result in a decline in body condition.

Snow should not be used as the sole source of water for cattle. Fresh, clean snow can be sued as a primary water source in some extensive beef operations, but it is essential that a permanent source of water is in place for times when there is not enough loose, clean snow that has not been trampled, wind-blown or crusted.

Snow must not be used as the sole source of water for cattle that are lactating, growing or in poor condition as they will lose the excess energy they need to produce milk, gain weight or regain their health. It is also important to allow cattle several days, even weeks, to acclimatize themselves to using snow as a primary water source.

Snow is not a suitable source of

water for horses. They have very specific water requirements during winter and cannot eat enough snow to adequately hydrate themselves.

Without sufficient water, horses cannot eat enough to stay warm. They will lose weight and become suseptible to impaction and colic.

Forcing a horse to eat snow as a source of water is actually counterproductive in that the calories used for melting the snow will not be available for body warmth, condition, maintenance and overall health.

Quality and palatability also affect water consumption. Livestock will limit their consumption of water to the point of dehydration if the quality

is compromised. Producers noticing a reluctance to drink, reduced feed consumption or decline in body condition in their animals should test the quality of their water supplies.

It is important to monitor livestock regularly during the winter and producers should use body condition scoring to assess livestock’s body reserves or fat accumulation. A decrease in body condition may indicate that livestock do not have enough good quality water to digest their food.

BIXSco and Cargill Limited Sign Deal Enabling Flow of Carcass Data Through Supply Chain Deborah Wilson, Sr. Vice President, BIXSco Inc.

BIXSco Inc. (BIXSco) and Cargill Limited (Cargill) have released further details of a signed master agreement through which Cargill will provide the past three years of beef carcass data, and all future data, to BIXSco. This agreement is a tremendous step forward in enabling the tracking of cattle production information through the supply chain—allowing everyone from producers, packers, and retailers to unlock the value of their data and reflect the pride of the Canadian cattle industry by allowing it to verify the quality of its beef.

“Access to carcass data has long been identified as the major roadblock to industry-wide data sharing as it relates to cattle production information throughout the supply chain. With this agreement, that roadblock has been removed,” said Hubert Lau, President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of BIXSco. “In partnership with Cargill, we look forward to helping the industry unlock value by sharing data through the Beef InfoXChange System (BIXS), which now includes more detailed carcass data to help beef producers improve management and profitability.”

Lau added that BIXS’ data management system is currently being rebuilt to accommodate the anticipated high volume of data. The more robust system will also allow the supply chain to buy and sell data up-and downstream. The enhanced BIXS data management system will continue to ensure no personal information is shared through the system; users will remain anonymous until they choose to contact a source of information. ”Cargill has worked with BIXS since its inception in 2009. We look forward to continuing on this journey and embracing the potential of this data management system,” said Chantelle Donahue, Vice President,

Corporate Affairs, Cargill.

“This agreement is a crucial step in ensuring information flows up and down the cattle value chain,” said Dennis Laycraft, Executive Vice President of the Canadian Cattlemen’s Association.“

What does the Cargill agreement enable?

The agreement provides for the last three years of carcass data for cattle processed and all future carcass data to be provided to BIXS, in trust, as available. At present, fifteen fields of data will be provided. Initial data

transfer will start with their Alberta asset, but will work towards including Ontario when the time is right.

When will the data be accessible?

The data will be provided to BIXS following an audit by Cargill of BIXS’ privacy functions. The audit is partially complete. Additionally, BIXS’ data management system is currently being rebuilt to accommodate the anticipated high volume of data, and providing a better system that will allow for robust data trading up and downstream.

Who pays for what?

BIXS is similar to a stock market by allowing buyers and sellers to exchange data for a price. In addition to purchasing carcass data (which will help producers improve their operating efficiency and profitability), producers will also be able to sell their management data to others, allowing them to be compensated for their work in capturing data.

Much data lies dormant in desktops across the country. BIXS allows all parts of the supply chain to unlock the value of data by sharing it and determining fair value for based on market factors. The end result is a supply chain that is more knowledgeable, productive, profitable, and responsive to increasing demand by domestic and foreign consumers for more information about the quality of Canadian beef.

About BIXS BIXS was established in 2009 as a platform for information sharing.

The BIXS database includes information about individual animal and carcass data, management protocols, and health treatments. No personal information is shared through the system; users remain anonymous until they choose to contact a source of information.

Livestock Industry Embraces Awareness Programming Michelle Panko, PAg, Provincial Agriculture Awareness Specialist, Regional Services Branch, Agriview

Consumers are becoming increasingly interested in how their food is produced. However, the majority of consumers live in urban centres and have no personal connection to agriculture. In order to connect with these consumers, Saskatchewan’s livestock industry has created videos that show the public how modern agriculture works.

For the past two years, the Saskatchewan Stock Growers Association has created videos to showcase the ranches of The Environmental Stewardship Award (TESA) winners. Michael and Tammy Burgess won the 2014 TESA. A videotour of their Circle Y Ranch at Big Beaver showed the diverse array of species that coexist with cattle amidst native pasture in the Big Muddy

Valley. The video created for the 2015 winners, Jason and Karla Hicks of Bluestone Stock Farms at Parkbeg, shows year-round grass management and its importance in balancing the health and sustainability of native grass and wildlife. The videos can be found at www.skstockgrowers.com/tesa.

The Saskatchewan Prairie Conservation Action Plan (PCAP) produced a video, entitled Conservation Conversations, that shows how ranchers sustainably produce beef while protecting the ecosystem and providing landscapes that will be enjoyed by the public for generations. The Saskatchewan Egg Producers produced a series of video vignettes

that take viewers inside barns and egg-grading facilities. These videos allow the public to “meet” egg farmers and learn about their farms and the different hen housing methods they use. Additional videos focused on the food safety measures at an egg-grading station in Saskatoon and on interviews with scientists who discussed their current research as well as potential career opportunities.

Videos are only one example of the many types of initiatives eligible for funding under the Agriculture Awareness Initiative Program (AAIP).

The AAIP is funded under the Growing Forward 2 program, a federal-provincial-territorial initiative.

Industry Info Beef Drippings Receive Taste Award Beef Dripping (BD) has been named one of the 50 best foods in the UK and Ireland. Produced in Ireland, BD is made from the suet of grass-fed Angus and Hereford beef, rendered down and clarified to pure fat. The product was described as “nutrient rich, high in omega-3 acids, clean, pure and carries great flavor”.

Eating Meat Benefits Heart A study from the University of East Anglia, Norfolk, England, reports that eating meat can be as beneficial as regular exercise for heart health. The study researched the effects of seven different amino acids to heart health on 2000 women.

Researchers found evidence that women who consumed amino acids had better cardiovascular health. Meat consumption was also linked to low levels of arterial stiffness. “Proteinrich foods such as meat, fish, dairy, produce, beans, lentils, broccoli and spinach could reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.”

Older People Need More Protein Recent experiments have discovered

that adding protein to the diets of men above the age of 50, together with weight lifting, improved muscle protein synthesis.

The ability to retain or build muscle was influenced by the intake of protein, which provides amino acids for the body to use as building blocks for protein. Exercise increased protein synthesis while age decreases it, but exercise alone cannot overcome all effects of age.

Iron-Branding Damages Hides An article published in the Republic of Botswana advises cattle producers to stop hot-iron branding because of its effect on quality and value of the leather.

The report states that eliminating branding is vital for making the leather industry more viable.

In Botswana, cattle are branded over much of their bodies with specific no area designated for branding. The article says, “a viable leather sector can be realized by ensuring that farmers get incentives for taking care to eliminate hide damage”.
