COVID-19 Restrictions If crowd sizes are restricted due to COVID-19, please take the opportunity to view the cattle prior to the sale at the farm. You will have the opportunity to bid online, over the phone, or leave a bid with us or any of the sale staff in attendance.

Directions

We are making every plan necessary to host a safe and comfortable event. We will be adhering to the AHS guidelines on sale day. If regulations allow, please join us for coffee and snacks before the sale. Lunch and refreshments will be served immediately following the sale.

Between Botha and Gadsby Go north on RR 18-0 for 2 miles, turn West for 3/4 mile on 39-0, then turn north again on RR 18-0. Continue north for 5 miles, the road dead-ends in Legacy’s yard.

From the Junction of 601 and 56 Turn east on Hwy 601 for 5 miles, turn south on Hwy 850 for 2 miles, then east 5 miles on Twp 39-4 to RR 18-0, then north 1 mile into the yard.

Viewing the Bulls

Absentee Buying by Order or Online

We welcome visitors at any time. We encourage producers to come to the farm before the sale and to take as much time as you need to view the entire offering. It could be helpful to come prior in the event that you cannot make it to the sale or would like more time.

If you are unable to attend the sale, we would be more than happy to help you find a bull to fit your program. Call one of us or the sales staff, or buy online through DLMS.

Hospitality

Video Sale As this is a video sale, the bulls will not be walking through the sale ring. Please come early to view the bulls penned outside prior to the sale. Videos will be available at charolaisbanner.com. Under Events, find Legacy Bull Sale.

Either view the catalogue and click on the bulls’ pictures to view the video or click on the Video Link. The videos can also be viewed on DLMS by scrolling by date to March 7th.

Delivery We will deliver all insured bulls free of charge to central points in Western Canada by April 1, 2020. Bulls that aren’t insured will be delivered at the seller’s earliest convenience.

Credit Card Purchases Visa and Mastercard may be used for payment of purchases.

A 3% surcharge will apply.

Bull Evaluation All bulls current weights and scrotal measurements will be available prior to sale day. All bulls selling will be semen tested. In the event that you purchase a Decision Deferred bull, we will re-test the bull as soon as it is safe to do so following the sale. If the bull does not pass that semen test, we will let you use a different bull for the current breeding year and keep a sale credit of the val-ue of the bull you purchased, or refund your money back. We would never keep a bull in the sale that we did not believe, with the advice of the vet, would not go on to pass a semen test.

Welcome to the 4th Annual Legacy Charolais Bull Sale. We invite you to stop by the farm ahead of the sale to view the offering. If there are crowd restrictions, or you feel more comfortable to bid from home, there are options, but we encourage you to attend, if possible, and be a part of the day. The sale will be broadcast live on DLMS.ca, or you can be on the phone with any of the sale staff, or the Walgenbachs. We are here to make your buying experience as easy and pleasurable as possible.

The bulls are very quiet with the kids out and about them all the time. There is a great mix of pedigrees, with bulls that will calve well, give you the added performance you desire, and then have calves that will top the market being in the top sort pens. This past fall, the premium paid for the Charcross calves was again as high as it has ever been. If you aren’t using a Charolais bull, you are giving up a lot of dollars when you sell your calves. There are many half brothers that will give you the uniformity that is so desired when selling your calves.

For the purebred breeders, you will find some bulls that can go into any seedstock operation and add value to your program. The management of this mixed farming operation is top shelf, and you will be impressed with the bulls and the three generations of Walgenbachs here.

Being able to have our 4th Annual Bull Sale marks a point of reflection to us. We can’t say it enough, thank you to the past buyers, bidders, friends and family for their continuous support. As our program evolves, the goal has remained the same. We want to produce good bulls that add value to other herds.

We still believe strongly in the use of Charolais genetics throughout the cattle industry. Charolais cross cattle are yielding the optimum carcass sizes with the most efficient feeding rates. For that reason, premium prices are being paid for good Charolais cattle at the markets. This seems to be a trend that is not going away.

We strive to run an efficient operation therefore, simply put; our cattle have to work in order to stay in the program. Our herds strength isn’t in numbers but the high standard of production we expect out of each and every cow. As in previous years, we expect our females to produce cattle with correct confirmation, easy fleshing ability, deep bodies and quiet dispositions.

Feed

We initially feed our bulls using a fibre based no-starch protein supplement along with oats. We then continue with a fiber based non-starch protein pellet. This combination is designed to provide the energy required for good growth, but does not contain any added starch (grain). In addition, it contains chelated minerals, trace minerals and Vitamin E at a higher level to promote better skeletal growth, scrotal development and immune response. It also helps with the stomachs transition from pen to pasture. When we feel their skeletal growth for their age is at a maximum, we then switch to a TMR. We do this to help you see their potential, but not at a rate that is going to affect their longevity.

Birth Weight & Calving Ease University studies in Wyoming and data from Montana and Colorado lend credence to the following conclusions: 1. The birth weight itself influences calving ease by 65%.

2. The female has 60-70% influence on birth weight of her calf.

3. The bull has 30-40% influence on birth weight of his progeny.

4. Pelvic measurement and angle as well as the shape of the calf have 35-40% influence on calving ease.

5. Length of gestation greatly affects birth weight. A fetus can gain over one pound per day in the last days of gestation.

6. Weather and temperature the last 30 days affect the length of gestation.

7. Size and maturity of the cow influence calving ease.

Remember, everything is relevant. Increased growth, frame and performance will increase BW. A longer-bodied calf will weight more. If a calf is expected to have genetics for growth, it will display this prior to birth as well as after. As a rule of thumb, it takes a calf weighing 85 lb. at birth to finish at 1200-1250 lb. A cow should easily give birth to a calf weighing 8% of her own body weight. Thus a 1200 lb. cow should give birth to a 96 lb. calf with ease.

Continued selection for light birth weights will ultimately reduce the mature sizes and performance of your cattle.

The bull pen reflects the consistency of quality in Cairo’s offspring. We can really rely on his sire ability to conform a group of cows to produce an even set of progenies. This might be something to consider when you are putting together pens of steers. These cattle have great dimension of muscle, lots of depth and are free moving.

We have to try different genetics in order to see what they do with the type of cattle we have in our herd. We used a little bit of Chism semen last year on select females and were not disappointed.

Legacy’s Game Day 45G Game Day, one of the highest selling Charolais Bulls last year in Canada, was sold to Poplar Bluff Stock Farm. We think very highly of him, therefore, we retained a ½ semen interest.

Cay’s Outlaw 2G We purchased Outlaw with Horseshoe E Charolais. He was the Senior Bull Calf Champion at Agribition in 2019. He is an impressive and complete package. He has got dimension and softness. By including Outlaw in our program, this will give our customers additional calving ease options.

BLC Gasket 62G Gasket caught our eye during last year’s bull sale season. He has the natural muscling, excellent bone and leg structure with the size we were looking for. The goal for Gasket was to increase frame on some select cows. This homo polled bull’s offspring will also be included in next year’s bull sale.

Between Botha and Gadsby Go north on RR 18-0 for 2 miles, turn West for 3/4 mile on 39-0, then turn north again on RR 18-0. Continue north for 5 miles, the road dead-ends in Legacy’s yard.

From the Junction of 601 and 56 Turn east on Hwy 601 for 5 miles, turn south on Hwy 850 for 2 miles, then east 5 miles on Twp 39-4 to RR 18-0, then north .75 miles into the yard.

Terms & Conditions: Terms: The terms of the sale are cash or cheque payable immediately after the sale in Canadian funds. All settlements must be made with the sale clerks before cattle will be released. The right of property will not pass until final payment is made.

Bidding: Each animal will sell to the highest bidder. Bidders unable to attend the sale may phone their bids and instructions to the sale manager, auctioneer or special representatives.

Bids must be received in sufficient time prior to the sale.

Disputes: Bidding will be reopened between the parties involved. If no further bid is made, the buyer will be the person from whom the auctioneer accepted the last bid. The auctioneer’s decision is final.

Announcements: Announcements made from the auction block will take precedence over printed matter in the catalogue. Buyers are cautioned to pay close attention to announcements.

Purchaser’s Risk: Each animal becomes the risk of the purchaser as soon as sold. Animals will be cared for at the purchaser’s risk for a reasonable length of time. All animals left with the seller must be insured.

Certificate of Registration: Each animal will carry papers issued by the Canadian Charolais Association. A certificate of registry duly transferred will be furnished to the buyer after payment has been made.

Delivery: Assistance will be given in making delivery after the sale. The purchaser agrees shipping arrangements will be at the convenience of the seller, but will be as soon as practical after the sale, at the buyer’s risk.

Breeder Guarantee – Bulls: Should any bull fourteen months of age or over, fail to prove a Legacy Charolais

breeder after being used on cows known to be breeders, the matter shall be reported in writing to the seller within six months following the date of purchase or six months after the bull has reached fourteen months of age. The seller has the right and privilege of six months to prove the bull a breeder. No guarantee is given that semen collected from the bull will freeze.

Exception Guarantee: In case where the animal is subjected to any hormonal or surgical reproductive techniques after the sale, this guarantee shall be null and void. The seller is not responsible for damage caused by foreign bodies after the animal has been sold or for sickness not apparent at sale time. In no event shall the seller be responsible for more than the purchase price.

Accidents: Although every precaution will be taken to protect the safety and comfort of buyers, neither the sale manager, auctioneer, or sellers assume any responsibility and disclaim any liability, legal or otherwise,in the event of accident or lossof property. By Livestock is only acting as a medium between the buyer and seller and is not responsible for failure on the part of either party to live up to their obligations; or for the truth of any warrantees or representations, expressed or implied. By Livestock assumes no obligation to enforce or collect monies between parties. By Livestock assumes no responsibility for any credit extended by the seller to the buyer. Any legal action taken in exceptional cases must be between the buyer and the seller. The buyer must look to the seller for fulfilment of all guarantees and representations.

Insurance: Insurance will be available sale day.

Pictures: By attending the sale you are granting permission for your picture to be used for promotional and advertising purposes relating to the sale.
