e would like to welcome everyone to our Legacy Charolais program. Having our first bull sale has been a goal that we have wanted to reach since we started to sell our first purebred bulls. We enjoy being in the cattle industry and are excited to offer our selection of bulls to everyone.

We have been around cattle since we were old enough to be. Troy’s parents had a commercial cow herd which he naturally invested in and came to co-manage. Hally and Rhonda, bought the first purebred cows 15 years ago. Originally, they raised bulls for their own herd use, but as time went on the decision came to sell the commercial end. It wasn’t an easy one, but we had grown our farming acres and decided to focus on expanding the purebred end. Together, Troy, Dianna and Rhonda, have been actively selling bulls privately for the last 10 years. We now run a purebred cow herd of approximately 120 mother cows.

We strongly believe in the benefits of using Charolais genetics in a cross breeding program. We have an open door policy. We encourage producers to pick a bull that will fit their herds’ needs. Success to us is when our customers are successful in their own herds.

Originally, when we decided on a herd name, we wanted people to know that we realize that every management decision producers make effects their outcome. We know that buying a bull is ultimately a decision for years to come; hence we strive that every bull or cow resulting from our program leaves a Legacy behind.

We wanted to offer a larger selection of bulls in our sale than what we could produce ourselves, therefore, it was an easy decision to invite Bob Charolais as a guest consignor. We are very like-minded in the quality of bulls we want to offer and how we both strongly believe in customer satisfaction.

Lastly, but most importantly, thank you to our customers, friends and family that have been with us for the past years. If not for you, we would not be able to do the things we do.

Welcome to Legacy Charolais’ first bull sale with guest consignor Bob Charolais. Troy, Dianna, Rhonda and Bob are all very conscientious breeders and have been working for many years in developing a product that will work in all segments of the industry.

Legacy Charolais has been selling their bulls off the yard and finally have the numbers, quality and the desire to give everyone first pick of the bull pen by having a sale. This summer they were the final stop on the Alberta Charolais Association tour and hosted 200 people for supper in their new shop that will be the location of this video sale. The breeders who attended the tour were very impressed with the quality of the cattle on display and the hospitality. I am sure you will also be impressed with the quality of bulls they have to offer and the great hospitality awaiting you.

Bob Burla has been breeding Charolais for a couple decades in the partnership of Springside Farms. This past fall, the cows were split between Mike and Bob and his herd is now under the name BOB Charolais. Many of you have seen the quality of the Springside herd over the years and this is the quality you will find in his operation today.

The bulls are very quiet and there is a great mix of pedigrees with bulls that will calve well, give you the added performance you desire and then have calves that will top the market being in the top sort pens. For the purebred breeders, you will find some bulls that can go into any seedstock operation and add value to your program.

As this is a video sale, the bulls will not be walking through the sale ring.

Bull Evaluation

Delivery

All bulls sell with a passed semen test by Dr. Jackie Dobinson. All bulls current weights and scrotals will be available sale day.

We will deliver all insured bulls free of charge in western Canada by April 1, 2018. Bulls that aren’t insured will be delivered at the seller’s earliest convenience.

Landmark

In order to find a bull to help elevate our program, we needed to decide what characteristics we should focus. We wanted a proven bull that is highly maternal, has good confirmation and would increase performance. We followed what this bull has done in the Horseshoe E herd and decided that he would be a good addition to our program. It is important to take note that with the added performance, we have not sacrificed calving ease on cows. With the introduction of this bull, we are offering different, but reliable genetics.

Bluegrass

When we first started A.I.ing, we decided to use Bluegrass. We wanted a herd sire that was going to increase muscling, and create consistency while maintaining calving ease. We are very happy with the udder development and milking ability of these females. A considerable amount of the females we have raised and kept in our program have Bluegrass in their parentage. In the past, we have sold a significant number of Bluegrass bulls. The reason we don’t continue to use this sire heavily is only because we want to offer new genetics to our existing customers. We still like to continue to use Bluegrass on special cows.

We like this cross so well; it is hard for us to change.

Legend

Last year, we purchased a hand full of heifers that were bred Legend.

We were very impressed with how easily they calved, their vigor and their ability to gain. We were so pleased with this sire that we decided to continue to breed with this bull. This is the only bull calf we had from the heifers we had purchased. We believe that he will pattern his sire and be a very easy calving bull with ample performance.

Atomizer

Atomizer is a bull we raised ourselves. We have used him as a walking bull to conclude our breeding season and we have always been able to rely on him to increase performance in our later born calves. He improves structure and confirmation, adds smoothness and is our ideal frame score. He is overall a very well-muscled bull. To date, he has provided us with four crops of marketable bulls. His mother, sisters and offspring are still actively producing in the herd.

Welcome to Legacy Charolais’ First Annual Bull Sale!

I would like to thank Troy, Dianna and Rhonda for inviting me to be a guest consignor at this momentous event for their operation. Having been in the area for the last decade, I have watched as they built their herd into a exceptional program. Legacy Charolais are not just a numbers builder but are dedicated to breed improvement and I value and respect them for their commitment to the breed. I feel our combined operations present a very complimentary group of bulls for this sale.

This sale is also momentous for me as it is my first bull sale operating as BOB CHAROLAIS. It is my first in that respect, however it is my 17th bull sale selling Charolais bulls that have been raised with the customers’ expectations foremost.

My 22 years as co- owner and operator of Springside Farms, these years were filled with many achievements both in the show ring and the sale ring and I am very proud of how much Mike and I accomplished together. Now, I am excited to make my own achievements with BOB’S BULLS. The debut of BOB CHAROLAIS at the 2017 Alberta Select Show was the first achievement so far, where my bulls dominated the pen show and brought home the Grand Champion Pen Banner.

A purebred breeder can be compared to as a kid at Christmas time when it comes to waiting for the time to pass between the day you decide on a herdsire until you see those first offspring hit the ground. For me, I value consistency in that herdsire above all else.

Princess Hanna 188R was born and raised back in Manitoba, and happens to be where I got started in this breed. Her sire HTA Crown Prince did so much good and sired many terrific commercial men’s bulls that sold in the first seven bull sales back in Manitoba. BUYING BULLS MADE EASY BY BOB: For those of you attending your first video sale here are a few preparation tips!

• It’s beneficial to evaluate and score the entire offering and make notes on all the lots so as to not get mixed up or second guess yourself during the sale!

• Highlight or circle information pertaining to your acceptable levels, anyone selling calves right off the cow weaning weight is important, finishing your calves you’ll want to see how yearling weights compare, selecting bulls with the most value to your operation. We will make available a list of bulls with their sale day weights and scrotal sizes to help assist you.

• Know your herd and your breeding needs, number of cows one bull will cover, size of your cows versus the size of the yearling you’re interested in putting with them.

• Have a budget and your allowance for wiggle room figured out, sometimes one more bid is all it takes and can make the difference between owning the bull you wanted versus a second choice.

• Come early or come twice to allow your self time to analyze the entire offering, or watch the videos online ahead of time.

• Ask questions. That’s what we as owners want. We want to know what you’re wondering about or would like answered.

• Register and be prepared to bid online in case an emergency arises, you can also contact either of our operations or our Sale Day Staff to assist you with your needs.

• Relax, have a coffee and a snack before finding your preferred seating.

• Don’t forget to get insurance after and ask the agent what all it covers and for how long do you carry it. All bulls sell with a passed semen evaluation which is needed for insurance so there will be no hold ups there.

Terms & Conditions:

Terms: The terms of the sale are cash or cheque payable immediately after the sale in Canadian funds. All settlements must be made with the sale clerks before cattle will be released. The right of property will not pass until final payment is made.

Bidding: Each animal will sell to the highest bidder. Bidders unable to attend the sale may phone their bids and instructions to the sale manager, auctioneer or special representatives.

Bids must be received in sufficient time prior to the sale.

Disputes: Bidding will be reopened between the parties involved. If no further bid is made, the buyer will be the person from whom the auctioneer accepted the last bid. The auctioneer’s decision is final.

Announcements: Announcements made from the auction block will take precedence over printed matter in the catalogue. Buyers are cautioned to pay close attention to announcements.

Purchaser’s Risk: Each animal becomes the risk of the purchaser as soon as sold. Animals will be cared for at the purchaser’s risk for a reasonable length of time. All animals left with the seller must be insured.

Certificate of Registration: Each animal will carry papers issued by the Canadian Charolais Association. A certificate of registry duly transferred will be furnished to the buyer after payment has been made.

Delivery: Assistance will be given in making delivery after the sale. The purchaser agrees shipping arrangements will be at the convenience of the seller, but will be as soon as practical after the sale, at the buyer’s risk.

Breeder Guarantee – Bulls: Should any bull fourteen months of age or over, fail to prove a

breeder after being used on cows known to be breeders, the matter shall be reported in writing to the seller within six months following the date of purchase or six months after the bull has reached fourteen months of age. The seller has the right and privilege of six months to prove the bull a breeder. No guarantee is given that semen collected from the bull will freeze.

Exception Guarantee: In case where the animal is subjected to any hormonal or surgical reproductive techniques after the sale, this guarantee shall be null and void. The seller is not responsible for damage caused by foreign bodies after the animal has been sold or for sickness not apparent at sale time. In no event shall the seller be responsible for more than the purchase price.

Accidents: Although every precaution will be taken to protect the safety and comfort of buyers, neither the sale manager, auctioneer, or sellers assume any responsibility and disclaim any liability, legal or otherwise,in the event of accident or lossof property. By Livestock is only acting as a medium between the buyer and seller and is not responsible for failure on the part of either party to live up to their obligations; or for the truth of any warrantees or representations, expressed or implied. By Livestock assumes no obligation to enforce or collect monies between parties. By Livestock assumes no responsibility for any credit extended by the seller to the buyer. Any legal action taken in exceptional cases must be between the buyer and the seller. The buyer must look to the seller for fulfilment of all guarantees and representations.
