Keystone Simmentals was a Silver Sponsor for Round Up 2012

Keystone Simmental Association Dana & Megan Johns Photo Credit Simmentals Focus

Keystone members support the future of the Cattle Industry. Pictured is Everett More President of Keystone Simmental Association and Dana & Megan John. Dana, Megan and son Terron Johns run a mixed grain and cattle farm at Kenton, MB. They run a herd of 110 cows with approximately half being Simmental. They also have a custom back grounding feedlot with the main customers being from Quebec and Nebraska. They are also part owners in a custom silaging operation, Ag-Land Farms Limited. Dana and Megan have been involved with the Simmental Breed from a very young age, Megan’s parents Ken and Merrilee Bond, always had the Simmental influence in their commercial herd. Dana got his start by helping Bruce Johnston and Preston Stock Farms show at various fairs and then began his own herd. The John’s family continues to show at the local fairs competing in the commercial classes. In their herd, they try to aim for calving ease, milk, and performance by using mainly the black and red genetics with bulls and A.I. and are always trying to make their herd better. Congratulations from the Keystone Simmental Association to the Johns Family.

President Everett More (204) 748-1225 Secretary Irene Vanin (204) 748-1225 Welcome to the 34th Annual Keystone Konnection Simmental Sale. In this group of producers, we have consignors who have been part of this group for many of those years. This year again, as most years we welcome new members to our group. The consignments cover all facets of the breed - Full Flecks, Reds, Blacks, Bulls, Breds and Open Females. There is a common thread however - they are quality cattle, backed by breeders with integrity. Age verified cull cows again this fall are bringing good dollars. This sale will provide you the opportunity to replace those culls with genetics that will add to the quality of your herd.

Everett 11:30 a.m. on Sale Morning, Come and participate in the fun and excitement of the…

2012 Born Simmental Heifer Calf Futurity

Everyone Attending the sale can be a judge! Juniors - get a free ticket on the Sim-Acta for a chance to win a credit on a heifer calf. Here's how it works: • You can buy a "Card" to become a "Judge". 1 card for $25 or 3 cards for $50 - each card entitles you to select a Sim-Acta of heifer calves. Simply put, you give it your best guess on which three heifer calves will be placed first, second and third place in the show. The Winner (the "Judge" who picked the correct heifer calves in order) will received a sale credit totaling the whole amount of tickets sold (ex. 22 tickets @ $50/ticket = $1100 sale credit.) • "Judging cards" need to be bought and the three heifer calves chosen on the card before the show judging starts at 11:30 a.m. on sale morning. • The heifer calves will be judged TOURNAMENT STYLE (single knockout elimination). Judging cards need to be bought and your selections recorded and turned into sale management before show judging starts at 11:30 a.m. on sale day. • Calves will enter the ring two at a time. Each judge will vote for one or the other. The winner advances to the next round until we get down to the final three calves. If there is a tie, the money will be split.

Simmental females are known for their maternal strengths. These strong maternal traits combine fertility and longevity with increased milk produc tion. The result is rapid growthy calves with exceptional weaning and yearling weights.

It is hard to believe that 8 years have gone by since we dispersed our herd and moved to Brandon. It is great that we still are involved in the cattle business, raising quality Simmentals and keeping in touch with the friends we made in the ndustry. We have been very fortunate to have our cows with Neil Carson. He manages them as his own. They produce profitable, low maintenance cattle or go down the road. This ensures that all the heifers and bulls that we bring to a sale will be productive and long lasting. We hope to see everyone at the different Simmental events this fall and wish all a great 2013.

She might not be the biggest cow but works very hard, has a perfect udder and feet and raises great calves. What more could you ask for? 27Z shows all the signs of a good herdsire with his strong top, long body, deep quarter and being naturally quiet. Don't pass him up this fall.

Welcome to the 2012 Keystone Konnection Simmental Sale! This is the first time that Lazy Rainbow River Ranch has consigned to the Keystone Konnection sale and we are excited to be part of this reputable event! My parents, George and Vivian Bernier, originally established Lazy Rainbow River Ranch near Fisher Branch, MB, a small Interlake town that is a “short” 4 hour drive north-east of Brandon. We ran 350 head of purebred and commercial Simmental and Gelbvieh cattle until dad decided to disperse of the herd in 2008. After more than 30 years of breeding Simmental cattle, I couldn’t stand to wave good-bye to those top-quality cows that we worked so hard to develop. So, I retained a handful of our most elite purebred Simmental cows and have since taken over the purebred operation. Dustin and I currently run 43 head of Red and Black Simmental cows at our new farm located just 22 miles north-east of Brandon. Heifers and bulls are sold by sale consignment or private treaty at both our Fisher Branch and Minnedosa locations. To start off our first year in the Keystone sale, we are offering two powerful red heifer calves that we would love to keep in our own herd. You are more than welcome to stop by the farm to view the cattle or contact us at anytime. We look forward to visiting with you on sale day!

Bred to Winchester HR 653187, due January 31, 2012. A stout, moderate framed Top Gun heifer out of a little cow who is one of our best producers. Her 1st calf was one of the top bulls in our 2010 bull pen and this year's calf (her 4th) will repeat that feat. In between she had 2 heifers:her two year old was in our show string this summer and won her class 4 out of 5 shows and was Supreme Champion Female at the Boissevain Fair and then 117Y. With siblings like this there is very little guess work here.

Welcome to the Keystone Konnection 2012 Sale. We are happy to be a part of this prestigious group of breeders. WE have been working with a small herd of purebred Simmentals for 22 years now and have enjoyed the many friends we have made over the years. We have operated our herd over the past several years with the generosity of a friend with facilities to house our cattle as we live in town. However, due to the passing of this friend we have been searching for new cattle housing facilities for a number of months to no avail. For this reason we have made the decision to sell off our cattle. These heifers were destined to be the building blocks of our herd into the future. While we say farewell to our cattle, our friends in the cattle industry will last a lifetime. Merry Christmas to you all!

As I stated last year the Keystone Sale has become well known for its affordable quality. We encourage you to come and have a look at this strong offering. We have dipped into this sale’s quality a number of times, grabbing females that have gone on to be major players in our herds annual production. One of the two red heifer calves we are offering is an ET heifer out of a Keystone purchase two years ago. Our red baldy heifer is product of a cow family, which got its start from the Keystone Sale. When you see the strength of these two you will know you can buy with confidence in this sale. Nancy and I invite you to stop by our pens to have a look at the four heifers we are offering. These heifers will make great junior show heifers or good replacements. We think they will stack up pretty good with the quality this sale is known for. As for those of you who are not familiar with WLB Livestock, Nancy and I operate a 160-cow seed stock herd of purebred black and red Simmental and Polled Herefords. We are located 6 miles north and 1 mile east of Douglas. Do not forget our annual bull sale. It will be held at the farm, March 26, 2013.

Welcome to Workman farms portion of this year’s Keystone sale. The bred females we are bringing out are functional and consistent in type and quality, and bred to calving ease sires. We used the Wheatland bull on heifers this year because he calved so easy on cows last spring with the heaviest birth weight being 90lbs. The open heifers are very different types with the black heifer more moderate and fancy, off our Wheatland bull, and the fullblood heifer that is a big deep ribbed power type female. Bred: AI to Beef Maker April 5/12, exposed to Wheatland Bull 15X April 20/12 – July 1/12. Observed bred May 11/12. Safe to May 11. 47Y is a smooth polled solid black female that goes back to a high selling female that came out of this sale, Blueridge 23K. A moderate framed heifer that is setting a nice udder. We calved our first Kosmo heifers this past spring and are happy with the results. 47Y should make an excellent cow and bred to our Wheatland bull, who calved extremely easy last spring, should make for an exciting combination.
