Welcome to our 6th Annual Sale Welcome to our 6th Annual Bull Sale. The markets this fall were up and down but one thing that was constant, was the premium given for the Charcross calves. And a white bull definitely stamps his progeny. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to raise some of the “premium” calves. All of us at Hunter Charolais really appreciate your confidence in our cattle. This support gives us the incentive to keep pursuing our passion of producing functional cattle. We enjoy having everyone come to the yard and see the bulls, their dams and the sires. It gives us an opportunity to spend time and show case our program and what we are trying to achieve – a consistent pen of bulls with functionality and longevity built in. You will also notice as you thumb through the catalogue that we are offering polled Hereford bulls for sale. The opportunity to purchase foundation females from Leveldale Polled Herefords (Amy’s Father) arose this past fall. The Hereford genetics that we bought will be a nice fit and will complement our previous breeding program. We look forward to everyone evaluating this new addition to our program. The bulls are available anytime for viewing before the sale. Coffee is always on and any excuse to stop work and visit is very welcome. Thank you to all the bidders and especially the buyers from previous years. A huge THANK YOU to our family, friends and By Livestock for all the help through the year and leading up to the sale. The Hunters Doug & Marianne, Jimmy & Amy, Michael & Candace • Kristi & Steve Michaleski
A Charolais family operation for over 30 Years
When picturing this set of bulls, I was impressed with the quality as well as the variation in type, from calving ease to big performance. From bulls that could be used in the heifer pen to bulls that would add as much performance as you would want in your mature cowherd. There are bulls that would work in any purebred operation or for any commercial producer with a good variety of pedigrees to complement any cowherd. Let them help you find what will work best for you. The drive to Roblin will be worth the trip and you can have a preview by video of the bulls before hand. Come for lunch and look through the bulls as it is a video sale and the bulls won’t be coming through the sale ring. Hunters are committed to agriculture and the cattle business and will work with you to make sure you’re happy with the genetics you are buying. They know what works in the commercial industry as they have commercial cows themselves. Again this year, the Hunters are offering some very good commercial open heifers that will fit into the top of most herds. A new addition this year are the Polled Hereford bulls. Have a look at the pedigrees and pictures and you will see a high quality offering develop from years of breeding by the Allisons at Leveldale Polled Herefords. If Candace or I can be of any assistance before the sale or on sale day, please don’t hesitate to give us a call. We would be happy to help you find a bull that is right for your program. Sincerely, Helge & Candace By • By Livestock 306.584.7937 306.536.4261
This year’s bulls were fed a TMR to develop them with longevity and functionality in mind. We have worked with Doug Allison, Cargill Animal Feed and Nutrition, to develop the rations.
Something to Consider A cow should be able to have a calf which is 7% of her body weight. This is the national average. 1,400 lb cow equals 102 lb calf 1,800 lb cow equals 126 lb calf So a calf that is 115 lb out of a larger cow should give you no problems when bred to a smaller cow, as he is less than the 7%. The other factor is that the cow’s genetics and feed is more responsible for calf size than the bull. Pounds at birth equals pounds at weaning. Don’t short change your profits by selecting too small of birth weight bulls.

Zeus was bought to add length of body, sound structure and to throw some “oomf” into his calves and he hasn’t disappointed. He is consistently siring calves that are born easy, have great hair coats and grow like crazy. We were very pleased with the great job his daughters did on their first calves and believe the Zeus daughters will be a big part of our program moving forward. All of his sons in the sale are extremely sound, easy doing bulls that have great temperaments.

Dublin is one of the longest bulls in the entire offering! Dublin is as sound made as they come with plenty of thickness, depth and a second to none disposition. He is loaded with performance with an ADJ 205 of 861. We have a full sister to Dublin in production that is doing an awesome job, displaying an excellent udder, and milking extremely well. Don’t miss out on Dublin, he is sure to add performance and not sacrifice calving ease.

We have been using Ledger to add calving ease without giving up performance. We have been ecstatic with the results that we have been getting on heifers and cows alike. They come easy at birth, with excellent vigour, without giving up weaning weight in the fall. The Ledger sons continue to impress us with their docility, natural muscling and sound structure. His BW EPD is in the top 2% of the breed with his calving ease being in the top percentile. Ledger is without a doubt a curve bending sire and his sons are going to follow suit.

When we took a drive down to HTA’s sale in 2014 and saw Texas, we loved how he was put together. Texas is stout made with correct structure and has an excellent disposition. He moves like a cat and is siring calves with lots of hair and length. Being a Senator x Gridmaker, we think his is going to have a real impact on our program. We have used Texas a lot through A.I. on our commercial cows and have really loved the results we are getting.

Debate is one of the younger bulls in the sale this year and he has without a doubt earned his right to be here. He has a thick curly hair coat and has been a standout since day one. His mother has been one of our most consistent cows, with every bull calf she has had going through the sale and her only daughter looks to be following in her footsteps.

Doc’s mother has been a cornerstone of our program for many years. She has produced numerous high sellers and herd bulls over the years and continues to get it done every year. This year’s consignment is no disappointment, with Doc being one of the deepest and soggiest bulls in the entire offering with a thick shaggy hair coat. He is super stout made and moves like a cat. We think the world of this bull and think the possibilities are endless with him Retaining ¼ interest

LEVELDALE POLLED HEREFORDS In 1981, Ray Allison of Myrtle, Manitoba registered his first Hereford heifer under Leveldale Polled Herefords. The herd relocated to Douglas, Manitoba in 1998 and Doug and his family continued until his herd reduction sale in October, 2016. In the fall of 2016, the opportunity arose for Jimmy and Amy to purchase the foundation females from the Leveldale program. Jimmy, Amy, Brandon, Ryleigh and Blake will carry on the Leveldale name alongside the Hunter family in Roblin, Manitoba.

We are pleased to offer a group of Charcross commercial replacement heifers this year. These heifers are out of our own commercial Red Angus x Simmental cross cows that we run here alongside our purebred cows. All of the mothers of these heifers are here at the farm and we would love to show you them. They are sound, easy doing females that have excellent udder confirmation and milk hard. The commercial heifers have been developed on a high roughage ration consisting of barley silage, corn silage and 4 lb. of barley a day. These heifers were done with Bovi-Gold FP5 and Ultra-Choice 8 plus, given Ivomec mid-February. We are selling one group of three, and three groups of two.
