Pounds continue to pay bills. I know it probably sounds like a broken record. You’ve probably heard it or read it many times before, maybe even from me, but Brian & Doris Aitken Bridor Charolais it’s as true now as ever. And when those 519-323-2538; bridorcharolais@yahoo.ca pounds are hanging on a Charolais or http://www.bylivestock.com/bridor/ Charolais cross calf you have the best of both worlds. Here’s what I mean: almost every Wednesday morning I scan the Keady sale report from the previous day and even more often than once a week during the special fall sales. Time and again the Char cross calves outsell everything else when it comes to price per pound at Doug, Earl, Cory, Ryan & Erin Briggs comparable weight. Now friends please Echo Springs Charolais forgive me if I’m being too blunt, but let EMB Charolais me say it straight up the market is the 705-487-5840; briggserin@hotmail.com market and it is what it is. Char X calves have the ability to consistently command a premium, and feedlot managers know they work. Now for a cow/calf producer, if I can add a few extra pounds to that calf—well, extra pounds X premium price = profitability. It’s what all of us need to put groceries on the table and it’s why I believe so strongly in using Charolais bulls on commercial cows; especially when those calves are headed to a stocker sale or feedlot. It’s a proven formula and one that works. This sale offers many unique opportunities. Because the bulls come from three different programs there’s sure to be a bull or two here that will meet your requirements. It is important to note that each bull comes from a fully vaccinated cowherd and will be semen tested. Please do not hesitate to contact us any time prior to the sale, come for a visit, view the bulls, ask questions and tell us about your cows. We want you to make an informed decision and we look forward to seeing you on sale day.

Jim Baker

Spring 2017 Breed EPD averages: CE 70.5

BW 1.3

WW 43.4

YW 83

M 21.2

TM 42.9

Note: EPDs are not perfect or foolproof, but they do offer valuable information. Above are the Charolais breed averages. For example: If a bull’s BW EPD is less than 1.5 it is an indicator that his offspring birthweight should be below the breed average. Again, if a bull’s YW EPD is 84.1 for example, it’s an indicator that his calves’ yearling weight should potentially be 2 lbs heavier than the breed average. Likewise, if a bulls EPDs for Milk or MTL (total maternal) are above the breed average, then his offspring have the potential to make “better than breed average” mothers.

Sunrise Lightening is an All State son and although you’d never know it by his size today, he entered this world as a 65 lb twin. Coming from a big, long Bluegrass daughter and looking at his EPD numbers, this bull should be safe to use on heifers. He’s quiet, he has a good straight top, he’s filled with performance and as an added bonus he’s clean sheathed.

Anyone who has been around my daughter over the last 12 months has certainly heard this bull’s name mentioned more than once. He’s been to town a few times and most of those were standing beside his nice made Turton mom in the cow/calf class. The performance in this bull is remarkable; he hasn’t been fed anything different than most others in the sale and yet he’s got at least 100 lbs on them. He weaned at over 1,000 lbs and he’s in the top 1% of the breed for weaning, yearling and total maternal score. He’s incredibly long with big, strong leg and bone structure. If you’re looking for a bull with performance, this guy is going to add pounds to your calf crop.

Heifer bull alert! Razoul is brought to us by a heavy milking first calf heifer who just happens to also be a Sunburst daughter. That’s significant because, sired by Distinction (who we’ve also used successfully many times on heifers), this bull has calving ease on both sides of the pedigree and Distinction will certainly give him some added punch. The numbers certainly support that statement with a CE number of 94.3, BW of 0.4 and yet he’s in the top 10% of the breed for his yearling weight number. If you’ve got some heifers to breed, then this one will fit the bill.

While I’m not sure what the heck a “Yeti” is or who for that matter, I do know a thick, stout, hairy, big boned, wide made bull when I see one. This guy is all meat from front to back. Get around behind him and you have to lean way over to get a view of anything other than butt and while he maintains a smooth shoulder he’s about as wide in front. His mom is a heavy milking, Kaboom daughter who is one of our foundation cows and as an added bonus he’s halter broke and super quiet. A meat making machine and one of our very best.

Catching Zee’s is a bull that we had a ton of fun with over the past summer. He’s easy to work with, he has a very smooth front shoulder, he has some width and he’s a Distinction son that I think will really work well on any size of cow. He comes from a moderate frame Smokester daughter that’s been a very consistent producer. If you’re looking for an easy to work with, easy doing bull then Catching Zee’s is the one.

Keyser Soze is another one of these Distinction sons with absolutely phenomenal growth. Just look at the depth of quarter in this bull. He’s thick, wide front to back, and covered with an easy doing hair coat for those cold winter months. He’s been to town and seen the lights of Toronto, even slept on the street under the Gardiner Expressway for a few nights, so he’s a bit of a looker and he knows how to get along with people. But even more important, he has some incredible numbers and he’s going to sire some calves that are just like he is; calves that will weigh up and bring a premium.

Here’s our only Sunburst bull on offer this year, but he is certainly a good one. He has that nice small Sunburst head and smooth, long neck that all help with calving ease. But along with calving ease, 41D has some width and hip to him as well. He’s out of a big, strong Algonquin cow that I purchased out of the Martin Charolais herd in Saskatchewan. She’s a heavy milking “U” model and if I’m not mistaken every one of her calves has been sold for breed stock, so there’s certainly some proven genetics in this package. Don’t miss out on a solid opportunity here.

We continue to be impressed by our Five Star calves year after year. They rise to the top in weight gain and performance in our feedlot and his females are stamped with those maternal front ends and thickness to raise those bull calves. We see lots of similarities between Daybreak and Five Star and think he would be a great addition to any herd.
