Welcome to our Freyburn Farms Family Traditions Bull and Female Sale. All of us here at Freyburn would like to thank you all for your interest in and support of our program over the years. Your continued support is what gives us the opportunity to continue doing what we are passionate about, in raising quality seedstock. It has been a year of changes here at Freyburn. With growing numbers on both the commercial and purebred side of our operation we feel we have more depth of quality in our bull pen than ever. In doing so, we have had to push our calving back to start in February instead of January in order to comfortably handle calving out the larger numbers. We have not changed our overall goal at the ranch. We still strive to raise bulls that will provide powerful, high weaning weight cattle that will hopefully pay dividends in the fall for the commercial man, keeping in mind udder, foot and overall structure of our females in our cow herd. This year our bulls were grown on a balanced pellet bull ration from Landmark Feeds along with free choice hay. We feel our bulls have grown out very well this way and are fresh in their look. You can see by the pictures and videos that our bulls are not over conditioned. The bulls this year as a group get out and travel very well. Our bulls are still wintered on a 40 acre pasture where they are forced to walk every day for water. After this fall run it was clearer than ever, cattle are selling by the pound once again!! Luckily enough we have some young, growthy herd sires in our offering this year. We have a group of high performance Stout and Yellowstone sons on offer, followed by some easier fleshing, powerful Astroid and Genesis sons. And as always, we still have heifer bull calving ease specialists on offer with the Windy, Pioneer, Tiger, and Long Distance sons. Look for a calving ease or heifer recommendation on our offering through out the catalogue. As always, the bull sale will be in video format with the bulls on display just outside the door. Now one thing that we have done different is we have on offer April/May born commercial heifer lots. There will be two pens of five Black Angus heifers on offer followed by one pen of three Black Angus heifers, and a pen of three black white face heifers. Buy with confidence as these heifers are all sired by Freyburn raised bulls. Please feel free to come early and view the bulls. We would love to show you the working cows these bulls come from, with calves at foot. We know it’s not always possible to get out ahead of time to go for a tour. If you would like to see a picture of the mother or need anything at all to help make your next herd bull selection decision easier, don’t hesitate to ask. The bulls can also be purchased online through DV Auctions. These sales are all backed by our sight unseen program. If you don’t approve of the bull when you get him, you don’t own him. 7E This Long Distance son may be the highlight of the sale this year. He definitely has that herd bull look about him. 7E has a unique pedigree with no SAV in it. He has calving ease with exceptional growth all backed by an exceptional first calf heifer. 11C is an absolute favorite around here, that is destined for great things. 11C is an easy keeping type with a flawless udder, and is the type of cow you want behind your next herd bull. 7E was a favorite everywhere we showed this past fall and the same could be said for 11C as a bred. 61Y, the grand dam, is also a cow with an exceptional udder. 61Y has raised three excellent herd sires over the years, one is at West Bench Colony, one at the neighbors and the other right out of the show string is at Ed Threinenâ€™s. 61Y also has an exceptional Yellowstone heifer in the replacement pen this year. Both 61Y and 11C have fantastic bull calves at foot this year as well. This cow family flat out gets it done year in and year out. In fact, we think so highly of 11C she is going to become part of our flush program. 7E truly came out of the heart of our program.

Freyburn Angus Farms

Many of you are most likely aware of the heart stopping moment that Jason and Melissa and the rest of us in the Freyburn family encountered this winter with Joran. For those of you who do not know Joran, he is the 9 year-old son of Jason and Melissa whose passion for the cattle runs deeper than anyone we know. He never misses an opportunity to help any of us at the farm. Joran loves sports, but his true passion is raising and showing cattle. On December 6 at 3:00 p.m. Melissa took Joran into the doctor in Oxbow with symptoms consisting of a headache and very sore to touch his head. All symptoms of meningitis. Joran was kept in Oxbow for observation for a few hours before his situation worsened to a point of needing to be rushed by ambulance at 10:00 p.m. to emergency at Regina General Hospital. When Joran arrived in Regina the doctor was waiting for them in the room. They immediately gave him a CT scan where they found inflammation on his spine. After finding pockets of infection on his spine it took two different doctors and over an hour to perform a spinal tap, where the screams of pain from Joran were terrifying to say the least. While waiting for results on the culture tests for meningitis to come back they admitted Joran into the hospital and started treatment for both viral and bacterial meningitis due to it taking up to 48 hours for results to come back on cultures. By noon on December 7th Joran had lost feeling from the waist down. Joran also had no bodily functions. By this time there was concerns from Jason and Melissa that there was damage done from the spinal tap. Those concerns were not put to rest for a while. Joran’s condition worsened to the point of the doctors performing an emergency MRI on Friday at noon. The doctors found five spots of inflammation on his brain and from his shoulder blades down on his spinal cord. Almost instantly the results from the MRI had diagnosed Joran with ADEM (acute disseminated encephalomyelitis). ADEM is a rare neurological disorder that affects children more than adults. Most people infected with ADEM often have some infection two to four weeks before being diagnosed with ADEM, in Joran’s case most likely his Agribition flu. Being so rare, this 1 in a million disorder has very limited treatments. In laymen’s terms ADEM is a disorder were your immune system does not quit fighting and it attacks your brain and spine. At this time Jason and Melissa were informed the Air Ambulance was being prepped and on route from Edmonton, and that Joran would be flown to Saskatoon with a full pediatric team. They immediately stopped treatment for meningitis and began treatment with methyl-prednisolone. They also had to insert a catheter for a 2nd time. At this point in time Joran’s condition was far from stable. With the extreme and rapid decent of Joran’s condition, many of us back home unfortunately were beginning to fear the worst. Fortunately, for everyone involved Melissa was able to ride in the Air Ambulance with Joran. Upon arrival at Saskatoon, Joran was taken directly to pediatric observation. At this time, it became more than obvious that life had and was changing rapidly for Jason and Melissa’s family. Joran was now under observation and receiving treatment by the best pediatric team in the province. At this time Jason and Melissa had been by his side for three days without sleep. Brother Greg and his wife Cheri came from Edam and stayed by Joran’s side so they could get some rest. After that Jason and Melissa began shift work, taking turns resting and staying by Joran’s side. This is where the Ronald McDonald House comes in. Not only with the affordable rate of $10 a night to stay there, the accommodations they offer are truly 2nd to none. Meals supplies are there for the families if needed. Even some meals are prepared for you. This carried on until nearly Christmas when Joran had finally responded well enough to treatment that he could return home for Christmas under strict guidelines. With having no immune system left everyone was to take strict health precautions if you were to be around him. Joran’s treatment carried on until February 10th. After several trips to doctors, and missing school for all of December, January and February, Joran was given a clean bill of health on the 27th of February. It took 62 days for all of Joran’s feeling to come back. After this life changing event for everyone at Freyburn and all the support that was received along the way several things have come to light. We thank God everyday for giving Joran the strength to battle through this horrific disorder, and to give everyone the strength to be strong for him. It has truly been a blessing how everything turned out and that with the great and fast response from the health care system we are able to look back on this time and be thankful. Thankful not only for the healthcare system, but for the friends and family that supported us along the way in countless different ways. This is why we have chosen to donate 25% of the revenue from the lead off feature bull in the sale to the Ronald McDonald House Foundation. It’s only suiting that Freyburn Long Distance 7E is the offspring of Joran’s first calf heifer Freyburn Rally Missie 11C.

Length, thickness, performance and great hair all come to mind when I think of this March calf. His mom was an awesome addition from the Gerlei Angus herd. She has a great udder and tonnes of rib and mass. Last year 22Y raised a bull calf that made our show team and sold to Bruce Brokenshire. Note the EPDâ€™s on this bull - weighing 1375 lbs and not even a year of age. Tonnes of growth and performance in this calf.
