Here it is the middle of January and most of Canada has just had its first taste of winter. The fall across the country was long and mild and definitely helped the feed situation with cows being able to graze longer in many areas.

Without the cold weather, the cows were just not taking as much feed to maintain their body condition either.

The El Nino weather pattern has sure given us these conditions and it is weakening now so hopefully will allow more moisture into Western Canada for the spring. Especially into the areas that were lacking moisture last year. Only time will tell as forecasters can’t seem to get it right all the time. I was concerned last fall that we were going to see an exodus of bred cows out of our country to the U.S. but fortunately that didn’t happen as the feed situation improved for many. The U.S. herd is starting to increase but we haven’t seen that happening here yet.

The cattle market has seen as much volatility as ever with the futures market on live and feeder cattle going from limit up one day to limit down the next. The elimination of the trading pit in Chicago along with the computers doing the trades instantly and with the trends has contributed to this situation. It seems to have found its level now and hopefully some assemblance of order will return to the market. The fat market here in cattle came back somewhat from the December lows helping to eliminate some of the huge losses that cattle feeders were facing. Although it was a very profitable 2014 and part of 2015 for the feeders, there were losses up in the $600/head I was told by one who

hadn’t sold in to the December market in hopes that it would increase.

This of course has pushed the calf market lower but it too has seemed to stabilize somewhat and the lower Canadian dollar has helped keep our export prices competitive and shielded us from just how far some of the commodity prices have gone.

Another positive is that the boxed beef price has rebounded as well and the supermarkets are again using beef in some of their promotions so this should help pull some demand back.

Just had a text from a breeder in Northern Alberta who had a customer top the sale at North Central Livestock at Clyde January 12th with a set of 49 Feb/Mar born Charcross steers weighing 983 that sold for $2.2350/lb or $2,197/head. These would be extremely high quality, clean cattle but that is good money.

Was visiting with another cattle producer while standing over the meat counter in Costco last week and when the consumer compares a pork loin at $20 to a beef loin at over $100, it is easy to see if money is tight what they will be buying. Yes, the beef loin is bigger but there would be some shock value when doing the price comparison. Sirloins and some of the other cuts have to be a lot more appealing to the buying public and if prepared properly are excellent eating experiences as well.

In this issue you will see advertising for many of the early spring bull sales. What I have seen so far in the bull pens is as impressive as ever. Lower birth weights, more performance, just what everyone wants. The Charolais breeders are doing a great job producing the type of bull that will work at all levels of

the industry with no problems.

A common theme across the country last fall was the number of mature bulls going to market. Many auction markets had as many numbers as ever. With the decent prices being received there were still bulls selling for more money than when they were purchased and were used for a number of years. Combine that with the cost of wintering and semen testing and lots of producers shipped them and will replace them this spring with fresh new genetics.

My point here is you can expect a very strong bull market. There will be lots of demand, especially as we see more producers switching to Charolais bulls to capitalize on the premium prices paid on the Charcross calves this past fall and winter. If you watched any sales or ask any of the market managers, there was a strong premium consistently on the Charcross calves. A $.10 premium and an added 20 to 50 lb. from crossbreeding adds up to a lot of money when you are starting at over $2.00/lb. Who wouldn’t want an easy extra $100 plus a calf?

Ici au milieu de janvier nous avons eu nos premiers signes de l’hiver.

L’automne à travers le pays s’est prolongé avec des températures douces, ce qui a permis de prolonger la période de broutage au champ plus longtemps dans plusieurs régions.

Avec des températures moins froides, les animaux n’ont pas à prendre autant de nourriture pour maintenir leur état de chair. Le phénomène EL NINO nous a sûrement donné des conditions plus clémentes et en espérant qu’il apportera plus d’humidité ce printemps pour l’ouest du Canada. Spécialement dans les régions où ils en ont vraiment manqué. Seul le temps nous dira si les météorologues avaient raison.

L’automne dernier j’étais inquiet de voir un exode de vaches saillies quitter notre pays pour les USA, mais ce n’est pas ce qui est arrivé, probablement à cause de la nourriture disent certains. Les troupeaux aux USA ont commencé à augmenter, mais ici on ne voit pas encore de signe d’augmentation.

Les marchés ont été très volatiles, et souvent l’avenir du marché pour les animaux vivants et les veaux vont à la limite, une journée et le lendemain sont à leurs plus bas. L’élimination du commerce par ordinateur à Chicago, a contribué à cette situation. Il semblerait avoir trouvé un niveau semblable et que tout revienne à l’ordre pour le marché. Le marché du bouvillon s’est replacé quelque peu, avec les baisses qu’on a connues en décembre aidant à limiter les pertes énormes que les engraisseurs ont été confrontés. Bien que ce fut très rentable en 2014 et une partie de 2015,

ils ont eu des pertes jusqu’à $600.00 la tête pour ceux qui n’avaient pas vendu dans l’espoir que les prix allaient augmenter. Cette ligne de conduite a conduit le marché du veau d’embouche à la baisse, mais semble se stabiliser depuis, avec le cours du dollar à la baisse cela a aidé à avoir des prix à l’exportation plus compétitifs.

Un autre point positif est le prix de la viande en boîte qui a rebondi et que les supermarchés utilisent le bœuf à nouveau dans leur promotion, ce qui devrait aider à une demande accrue de la viande de bœuf.

Juste un exemple, un éleveur D’Alberta m’a texté il a eu les meilleurs prix à ( North Central Livestock Clyde) le 12 janvier 49 veaux charolais croisés nés en fév/mars au poids de 983 lbs à $2.2350 lbs ou $ 2197.00 la tête. C’était des animaux de très grande qualité et très propre et pour l’éleveur c’était de la belle argent.

Je visitais le comptoir des viandes chez Costco avec un producteur la semaine dernière et quand le consommateur compare le filet de porc à $20.00 et le filet de bœuf à $100.00 c’est facile de comprendre ce qu’il achètera. Oui le filet de bœuf est plus gros, mais c’est tout un choc quand on compare le prix. Aloyau et quelques autres coupes sont plus attrayantes à acheter par le public et si bien préparés sont un excellent choix.

Dans ce numéro vous verrez des annonces de plusieurs ventes printanières de taureaux. Cela fait longtemps que je n’ai pas vu des enclos de taureaux si impressionnant.

Les éleveurs charolais ont fait du très bon travail, en développant la sorte de taureau qui travaille à tous les niveaux dans l’industrie, sans aucun problèmes.

Un thème commun à travers le pays l’automne dernier était le nombre de taureaux matures réformés. Les réseaux d’encan n’avait jamais vu cela. Avec les prix récents qu’ils ont reçus ils ont vendu plus chers qu’ils avaient payé en plus de les avoir utilisé plusieurs années. Combinez avec le coût d’hivernage et les tests pour la fertilité, plusieurs les remplace avec dela nouvelle génétique. À mon point de vue il faut s’attendre à un marché en forte hausse car il y aura beaucoup de demande, d’autant plus qu’il y a eu de très bonnes primes sur les veaux croisés charolais cet automne et l’hiver dernier. Si vous avez suivi les ventes, ou demandé des informations aux Réseaux d’encan il y avait une différence de 0.10 la livre pour un charolais croisé. Cela veut dire un $100.00 dollar de plus la tête facilement.

Cow Health Issues at Calving Roy Lewis, DVM

With all the stressful events leading up to and including calving the incidence of several problems does increase and we would be remise if we did not review them just before calving season begins. By being ever vigilant of these conditions we can initiate treatment before the problem worsens.

The whole goal is to keep cows healthier so they milk better for their newborn calves and then rebreed.

What we do at calving then has a great influence on the upcoming breeding period. Both purebred and commercial cattle are at an all time high so the more calves we save or the more cows we can rebreed will return benefits to us down the line.

Mastitis although not real common in beef cattle compared to dairy there are conditions that predisposes cows to it. Most mastitis you see in beef cattle comes from the environment and infection wicking up through the milk canal. Cows which are very heavy milkers leak milk close to calving from the pressure. Watch them extra close for signs of a swollen quarter or depression. If in doubt strip out the milk and see what it looks like. A lot of the serious infections may have very watery looking milk.

Old cows with low slung bags and very large teats are the other group most susceptible. Most of us have very few of these and cull them if possible but one or two may be left to have the calf as a spare to be grafted to a young cow which may have lost her calf. Calves have a hard time sucking the large teats the milk becomes stagnant and mastitis can develop. Also the low slung bags where the suspensory apparatus has been stretched the udders contact more dirt and manure again making them susceptible. Cows may have had a low grade mastitis the year before which flares up when they calve again. If caught early stripping out the infected milk and infusing the quarter

may be enough. Because beef men don’t encounter mastitis very often some cases turn into chronic infections where the quarter is damaged beyond repair. Here there are various products your veterinarian can advise to allow the whole quarter to dry up.

Metritis or infection in the uterus is much more common in cows which don’t clean. Twinning or early premature births have a very high incidence of retained placenta. Most veterinarians have a regime for retained placentas, which may include hormonal shots. Metritis if it develops will see a cow very depressed with a very watery and smelly vaginal discharge. A mucous discharge indicates the cow is dealing with the problem. On occasion all the uterine contents are trapped inside so the discharge or smell is non existent. It is only when you examine the vagina and uterus that this will be evident.

Antibiotics may do the trick but if the cow is very depressed and febrile your veterinarian may need to be called in to flush the uterus give antiinflammatory drugs and if severe put the cow on i.v. fluids. That is why it is very important to monitor cows with retained placentas so they don’t turn into a metritis. Some cows which don’t retain their placenta can still develop metritis. Any cow that is depressed with no obvious signs post calving metritis would be a definite possibility but she needs to be thoroughly examined, as the cause can sometimes be hard to determine.

Milk fevers from lack of calcium or the related conditions from a shortage of phosphorus or magnesium or excess potassium definitely need emergency care. The quicker they can be treated the faster a response. If you notice signs of staggering, knuckling, difficulty rising these could all be precursors to the disease. Many come as a combination of shortages of the three minerals so veterinarians often will check the blood and treat with a product that has Magnesium

Phosphorus and Calcium in it. Heavy milkers are of course most susceptible because of the calcium loss in the milk. Beef cows can develop these milk fevers after (most common) or before calving. They may indicate there is not adequate mineral getting into the cows. Nowadays with blood machines in most clinics there will be a blood test taken to see which if any mineral is low. There may be other cases teetering on the edge and that is good to know ahead of time. Also we must distinguish the classical milk fever from other conditions causing a downer animal. Usually response to treatment is quite dramatic if the deficiency is solely calcium but phosphorus and magnesium deficiencies have a slower response.

Downers from injuries (slipping or falling) or hard pulls causing obturator paralysis (nerve damage) are another common category of conditions seen near or after calving.

Here we must diagnose and then give a prognosis for recovery. Downer cows are hard to work on and over time complications such as pressure sores, stiff joints and muscle damage is the result. If there is a hard calving or calf stuck in the pelvis for a long time, there will be lots of abrasions and contusions which may need antibiotics and anti inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) to keep the swelling especially around the obturator nerve to a minimum. In spring or summer watch for fly strike as eggs are often layed in and around the area. Feeling is reduced and the nerves which innervate the tail may be damaged as well. It given lots of TLC and making sure cows are rolled side to side a few times daily over time lots will eventually get up. There will be slow progress over a few weeks in some cases. If you start going backwards it may be necessary to put them down for humane reasons. Fortunately these days fewer of these cases are seen as calving difficulties from fetal oversize continued on page 20

Calving related deaths fall under the BSE program and we must try and get all our cow deaths tested to maintain the quota Canada has been given.

This will eventually help get Canada’s BSE status reduced from controlled to negligible which may help us reopen more export markets.

Around calving it has been my experience that conditions such as kidney infections, peritonitis

(hardware type diseases) and even pneumonia crop up more because of the stress on the cow as well as the large unborn fetus taking up room in the abdomen and the cow through her kidneys filters the calf’s blood.

Lameness issues can also crop up, as movement is more restrictive packing the extra weight around. These all add to more problems for the cow close to, during and just after calving.

Try not to pull too hard and call if

any unusual things are experienced at calving. Most prolapsed uteri replaced by your veterinarian survive and many will rebreed (this condition is not heritable). By being observant for these conditions which crop up around calving season, early intervention and treatment will reap rewards and allow more of these cows to survive and then rebreed. Let’s hope the 2016 calving season is the best yet for the Charolais breed.

Each year the CCYA’s National Board meets for their annual winter meeting in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, to discuss what changes to make to improve the experiences and programs for the Charolais Youth members. This year we met on January 16th and looked at how well the year of 2015 went with all of our programs, along with our improved website and another successful CCYA summer conference and annual semen auction. We would like to thank everyone who donated and/or bought semen at the auction, helping us raise over $4000. The proceeds from the semen auction go a long way towards helping the CCYA fund the scholarships given to members each year which they greatly appreciate!

Board promotes is the Genetics Program, which allows youth members to apply for straws of semen to breed their animals. This year, rather than providing youth applicants with a limited list of bulls to pick, the CCYA has again decided to allow applicants to pick from any of the bulls listed in the Genex or Semex catalogues.

Members can apply for the Genetics Programs through the application on the CCYA website, youth.charolais.com.

The deadline for the Genetics Program of 2016 is February 15th, after which members will be notified

by March 1st of the semen they will be receiving. Other programs the CCYA offers can also be found on our website such as the Buy and Show Program, which the National Board has recently changed to include steers.

ric and Lavonne Munro, along with their son Darryl and his wife Terri and son Bradley run a cowherd of over 300 bred females in the Kelwood, Manitoba, area.

Like so many farm families, the ladies work off the farm. Terri has worked for ten years for the CFIA in the hog industry in Neepawa.

Lavonne owned and operated the grocery store/liquor commission/post office in Kelwood for over twenty years. She retired but still does the Rural Route delivery of the mail for Canada Post.

Their cowherd is predominantly white as they have been using mainly Charolais bulls since the 1990s.

“We tried using Simmental bulls but just lost too much size. When we looked at the heifers we had kept for replacements, there just weren’t any there. It’s not that we bought poor bulls, we paid good money to select good bulls, but they just never panned out. They were quickly gone.”

Eric tells.

“We thought we would get some red females to give us good tan calves to market, but any that we did keep, didn’t turn out,” Darryl adds. “The bulls were all gone before they were

mature, it just never worked.”

“The herd has become quite white.

We have bought some cows with colour, but we raise most of our own replacements.”

They usually put 40-50 replacements in the herd each year.

“Cull cows are worth so much we found we were culling more. Any excuse at all and they are gone,” Eric chuckles.

“I think it is going to be at least four or five years of good prices before the cow herd can be built up on the

continent,” says Eric.

The herd size is at its maximum because of the limitation of their manpower, as Eric and Darryl don’t feel they can handle more.

“The cowherd goes to the Alonsa Community Pasture. This was a PFRA pasture that has been taken over by the province. We have our own pasture there and the manager retired with the restructuring change, but everyone else that works there is the same. We were pretty concerned when the announcement was made about continued on page 32

they rotate about 200 pairs back and forth. The heifers have a separate pasture,” Eric explains.

“We were in the McCreary pasture and our cows were co-mingled with other herds. When we got to go to our own pasture in Alonsa, with our own bulls five years ago, we jumped at the chance,” Darryl adds.

“We breed our heifers at home with one bull and we send a fresh bull with them to the pasture. We use mostly Red Angus heifer bulls, but this year we have one Charolais. Birth weight is

important when buying our heifer bull. We try to find a breeder that is honest and will work with us to find something they think will work.

Usually we have had pretty good luck. Darryl brought home a Charolais bull last year and we tentatively tried him on about six heifers. He calved really well and the calves are really nice so he got about 25 heifers this year,” tells Eric.

“We buy a mix of yearlings and two-year-olds each year. A yearling never goes to the community pasture.

We take the yearlings out of the herd when they go to pasture and we keep them here with other cows. When we can separate them from the cows in the fall they go on the same ration as our backgrounding calves for about three months. We like to get some condition on them. They don’t do well if they are in with the mature

herdbulls. These young bulls have a lot of growing to do and need special attention,” says Darryl.

“So they will be on probably 50 lb. of corn silage, and if they are on the steer ration they will get up to 10 lb. of barley. If they look like they are getting too much condition, we will switch them to the heifer ration which is maxed out at 7 lb. of barley. If they look like they have enough condition and don’t need any grain, we put them on straight corn silage,” states ❝You spend so much money on bulls, you have got to like them when you see them. ❞

“You spend so much money on bulls, you have got to like them when you see them. I don’t like to look at a bull down in condition when I have paid a bunch of money for him. We try to get them back in condition as soon as we can,” Eric says.

“One winter, we got a call from a guy who heard we had bid him up on a bull and he wanted to sell him to us after one season. We went to look at him and you wouldn’t even recognize him. He had only had him for one breeding season. He was probably the thickest bull in the sale and he had a bit of slough hay in his pen. It was terrible,” Darryl and Eric explain.

Bulls are insured for the first year, sometimes the second year too. They used to buy all of their bulls out of the yard by private treaty. Now with so many guys having sales, they have been forced to pay more for the better quality bulls.

They buy a lot of horned bulls because they have found they can get the same bull for less money than a polled bull. “We have to handle calves anyway because we start calving between the 15th and 20th of February.

You can buy enough dehorning paste for the whole calf crop for $50 and easily save more than that in the price

of a bull,” emphasizes Darryl.

Bulls are kept close to home until they are at least two, before they go to the community pasture. They run one bull for every 25-30 cows. They always send a couple of fresh bulls to the community pasture. Breeding season ❝ All of the bulls are semen tested and trichomoniasis tested, which is a requirement of the community pasture. ❞

there doesn’t seem to be any fighting.

They have been breeding and are content to rest and graze. Later in the fall (November) we pull the younger bulls and put them on separate feed,” says Eric.

The cows graze hay fields when they are weaned. When we start feeding them, they go on 2/3 corn silage with 1/3 hay. The mineral is mixed in with the feed. Garlic was added to the mineral at the pasture and the pasture manager was very happy with the fly control. They said there is also less pink eye since they started using the garlic additive.

The pastures close to home have one strand of electric wire around the bottom, which effectively keeps the young calves off the highway.

The calves are weaned when all of the cows come home from the community pastures around the 20th of October. When the calves are sorted off to haul home, we run them continued on page 36

through the chute and they get their second IBR/BVD vaccination on the Phizer Gold program. They let the heifer and steer calves stay together for about the first month. Once they are settled on feed, we sort them by sex and treat them with Ivomec.

“We don’t implant anything. It’s another trip through the headgate we just don’t want to bother with. We put Rumensin in the protein mix and it eliminates any threat of coccidiosis and they do seem to gain better on feed with it in their ration,” explains Darryl.

“It’s all about minimizing your risks,” Eric confirms.

Within the first week after birth the calves get a tiny Toltrauril capsule shot down their throat and there is no coccidiosis. They also get Presponse, Enforce 3 nasal spray, Vit A, D & E and selenium, dehorned (caustic paste), castrated (banded) and tagged.

The calves get their first IBR/BVD vaccination at about a month of age.

“Since we have been on this vaccination program, we haven’t had near the sickness in the herd. We hardly ever have to pull a weaned calf from a pen to treat it,” says Eric.

They seed about 1300 acres, (1/4 section of corn for silage, oats, wheat and canola). They buy their barley, as their land just isn’t suited for successful barley cropping.

In the past they have been forced to do tuberculosis testing, because of

their close proximity to the Riding Mountain National Park. Over the years the Munros have been required to test the whole herd which comes at a price. They have to hire people and the tests are done two days apart. The first day isn’t too bad, but getting them through the chute the second day is always a bit more challenging.

They always end up with an abortion or two during the process from the stress. It started before BSE and they had to test every second year until ❝ That’s why we have stuck with white. It weighs well and sells well. We have never had them discounted. ❞

“We market our calves at Ste. Rose around the first of March. We have dealt with Myles for years and he has buyers that know our calves. Our calves go in his show listing and it is a really good program. (The show list provides the feature calves by owner, breed and size, selling in the upcoming sale. Byers across Canada access this list off the Ste. Rose Auction Mart website to see whose calves are selling.) We weigh off the truck and take the pencil shrink and are always happy,” Eric continues.

This is when the calves are sorted into packages by weight and entered into the show listing.

“Darryl is always on the website following the market,” Terri adds.

“It is interesting to see what everybody’s calves weighed and what they got for them,” Darryl explains.

The steers and heifers are backgrounded separately and fed silage and about 10 pounds of grain

“It’s worked well for us. If you have good calves, they sell by themselves.

We don’t really like selling where they blend everything together.”

“It is the only auction market using this kind of system, but it really works well for us,” Eric confirms.

“We only take our calves the day before the sale. Some people take them two days, but we feel it is a long time to sit in smaller pens unnecessarily,” Darryl adds.

Their calves normally go to Ontario, but some have gone to Alberta.

Usually, the steers average 925 lb. and the heifers average 825 lb. The order buyer that buys the first package of steers, usually buys all the steers.

Their top steers brought just over $2400 in 2015 and the general comment around the table is that it is about time it is where it should be.

The top heifers brought $2100.

“Last year after the sale, I talked to the order buyers who had bought most of our calves. We discussed our breeding and feeding program and both order buyers emphasized the same point – Don’t change a thing.

There is way more demand for this type of calf than there are calves,” remembers Darryl.

Eric explains, “we’ve never had a problem with all white calves. We have had lots of discussions with Myles at the auction mart about it and he always says the same thing, “You sell by the pound. Whatever comes in weighing the most is going to take home the most money.” That’s why we have stuck with white. It weighs well and sells well. We have never had them discounted.”

Overview Body condition scoring (BCS) is a useful management tool for distinguishing differences in nutritional needs of beef cows in the herd. This system uses a numeric score to estimate body energy reserves in the cow. Research indicates that there is a strong link between the body condition of a cow and her reproductive performance. The percentage of open cows, calving interval, and calf vigor at birth are all closely related to the body condition of cows both at calving and during the breeding season. All these factors play an important role in the economics of a beef cow-calf operation and help determine the percentage of viable calves each year. Monitoring body condition using the BCS system is an important managerial tool for assessing production efficiency.

Body Condition Scoring System Body condition scores are excellent indicators of the nutritional status in beef cows. Ideal liveweight varies from cow to cow whereas ideal body condition (BCS 5-6) is the same for all cows. Also, body condition can be measured in the field without gathering or working cattle.

Body condition scores are numbers used to estimate energy reserves in the form of fat and muscle of beef cows.

BCS ranges from 1 to 9, with a score of 1 being extremely thin and 9 being very obese. Areas such as the back, tail head, pins, hooks, ribs, and brisket of beef cattle can be used to determine BCS (Figure 1).

backbone is no longer visible. Cows with BCS of 6 or 7 become fleshy and the ribs are no longer visible. There is also fat around the tail head and in the brisket. An overconditioned cow (BCS 8-9) is smooth and boxy with bone structure hidden from sight or touch. She may have large protruding fat deposits (pones) around the tail head and on the pin bones. Be aware that gut fill due to rumen contents or pregnancy can change the appearance of moderately fleshy cows, especially over the ribs or in front of the hooks. Visual indicators of each BCS are listed in Table 1, and example photos of BCS 1-9 are illustrated in photos 1 through 9.

Long hair can often make it difficult to correctly evaluate the body condition score of a beef cow or heifer. When the hair on the cow is long, palpating the specific areas of fat deposition is particularly important, as shown in Figure 2.

Cows should be palpated over the back, ribs, and over the horizontal processes of the backbone (edge of loin). ‘Thin’ cows will have a sharper feel in these areas than cows with moderate or fat body conditions.

It is important to be aware that the breed of beef cow can have a strong influence on where body fat is deposited. For example, Bos taurus breeds and crossbreds will show a more uniform distribution of fat across the ribs, whereas Bos indicus cattle may have very little fat over the ribs but will deposit fat over the hooks and pin bones. spinal processes – back bone

A cow in ‘thin’ condition (BCS 1-4) is angular and bony with minimal fat over the backbone, ribs, hooks, and pins.

There is no visible fat around the tail head or brisket. A cow in ‘ideal’ condition (BCS 5-7) has a good overall appearance. A cow with a BCS of 5 has visible hips, although there is some fat over the hooks and pins and the 44

Guidelines for Body Condition Scores On average, most beef cows score in the range of 3 to 7 throughout the year. A cow is expected to be in optimal body condition (BCS 5-7) before calving. She may lose condition after calving and possibly into the breeding season. She may gain condition and weight as weaning approaches (assuming there is adequate forage) and continue gaining fetal weight and any needed body condition in late gestation.

Body condition should be evaluated and recorded three times a year: at weaning, 60-90 days before calving, and at calving. By assigning BCS scores at the time of weaning, the cows can be sorted for appropriate feeding. Grouping cows by feed requirements and feeding them accordingly can help each of them reach BCS 5-7 by calving. Scoring cows 60-90 days before calving allows you to evaluate your dry cow nutritional program while allowing enough time prior to calving for "emergency feeding" if needed. Although body condition should be evaluated at calving, it may be difficult to increase body condition since lactation requires most of the energy a cow consumes. If environmental conditions at the time of calving are mild, cows may be able to reach BCS 5 or 6 by breeding time. However, this is unlikely to occur when the weather is cold or high quality feeds are limited.

Liveweight should not solely be used as an indicator of nutritional status of beef cows in a herd. Research indicates that body condition is a more reliable indicator of nutritional status than liveweight. Most herds have cows that range in age, frame size, and muscling all of which impact the weight of the animals. Therefore, only using liveweight may over- or under-estimate the amount of body fat. Liveweight is also affected greatly by gut fill and pregnancy. Weight and body condition will vary depending on the physiological state of the cow, forage quality and availability, and the body condition of the cow.

Importance of Body Condition In order to manage a beef cow-calf operation in the most cost-efficient way, producers must be aware of the body condition of their herd. Research indicates that the body condition of beef cows is related to many critical aspects of production such as conception rate, days to estrus, calving interval, and milk production. When cows are extremely thin (BCS < 4), they are not only reproductively inefficient, but they are more susceptible to health problems. Cows at BCS 1 are in a life-threatening situation and need immediate attention. Cows that are over-conditioned (BCS 8-9) are the most costly to maintain. Two-year-olds with BCS 8-9 may encounter dystocia (calving difficulty) due to the excessive fat in the pelvic area. Table 2 lists many of the production problems associated with cows and heifers in ‘thin’ or ‘fat’ condition.

Failure to conceive is the most important factor contributing to the reduction of net calf crop. Conception rates are dramatically compromised in cows that are BCS 4 or less. Figure 3 shows the comparison between pregnancy rates and body condition scores and how these two factors impact the break-even cost of a cow-calf operation. In Virginia, the continued on page 50

average yearly cost to maintain a cow is $300 per year. The following example also assumes an average weaning weight of 500 pounds and a 90% calf crop weaned. At a BCS of 4, only 50% of the cows were pregnant, resulting in a break-even cost of $133.33/cwt. At a BCS of 5, the 81% pregnancy rate results in a break-even cost of $82.30/cwt, at a BCS of 6 with 88% pregnant, the break-even cost falls to $75.76/cwt and finally, at a BCS of 7, the break-even cost falls to $74.07/cwt. Economically, BCS directly affects net calf crop and the success of a beef cow-calf operation.

There is a significant difference in profit margin in percent calf crop between BCS 4 cows and BCS 7 cows.

Research indicates that the body condition of a cow influences days to first estrus after calving and calving interval. A beef cow must conceive within 82 days of the birth of her calf to maintain a 12-month calving interval.

Figure 4 illustrates that 91% of the beef cows with BCS >5 at calving showed signs of estrus by 60 days post-calving, whereas only 61% of beef cows with BCS 4, and only 46% of beef cows with BCS <3 showed estrus. The percentage of cows cycling by 80 days postpartum is an important factor affecting calving interval. The rectangular box in Figure 4 shows the critical breeding time in order to achieve a 12-month calving interval. This figure demonstrates the differences in postpartum cyclicity for beef cows at different condition groups. Calving interval is a function of many aspects of reproduction including conception rate and percent cyclicity. If the cows are not cycling, they are not going to conceive, which lengthens the calving interval and negatively impacts profits.

Nutritional Programs Using Body Condition Scores Since feed costs make up roughly 60% of the cost of a cow-calf operation, different feeding programs can be used to achieve the best reproductive performance without high

costs. Choosing a calving season that is most compatible with your forage program is the first step in maximizing cow condition and reproduction. Understand that the changes that occur in body weight and condition are normal in the production cycle of the cow.

pounds and a decrease of two body condition scores.

Moreover, an additional 100 pounds is typically gained during the last trimester of gestation for fetal growth and uterine development. Table 3 shows body condition scores and weight change recommendations for cows achieving a desired BCS of 5-7 90 to 100 days producer has the ability to put condition back on a ‘thin’ cow or restrict feed intake of a ‘fat’ cow.

Maintaining and feeding beef cows to attain a BCS in the optimum moderate range (BCS 5-7) allow beef cows to achieve maximum reproductive performance while feed supplementation costs are held to a minimum. In most situations, it is not economically feasible to supplement the entire herd if only half of the cows will respond to the higher level of nutrition. Separating cows based on BCS and feeding them accordingly are good managerial strategies. This should be done at or soon after weaning to allow 2 to 5 months of feeding prior to calving.

Summary Achieving a BCS of 5 or more before calving and throughout the production cycle is the key to a profitable cow-calf operation. Many producers waste profits by overfeeding cows in adequate condition when only part of the herd needs extra energy and supplementation. By sorting and feeding groups based on BCS, the economics of the operation improve. Producers need to pay attention to stocking rates and pasture quality. Overstocking and poor forage quality can lead to ‘thin’ cows.

As research indicates, monitoring cow condition directly impacts the reproductive performance of the herd. As

mentioned above, failure to conceive is the most important factor in reducing net calf crop. Keeping cows in adequate condition throughout the production cycle can improve reproductive performance and positively impact the economics of the operation. The BCS system is relatively easy to learn and can be implemented in any farm situation. The Livestock Feed Industry – Why Animal Agriculture is the ONLY way to Save the Planet Wendell Schumm, Ruminant Div. Mgr, Wallenstein Feed & Supply Ltd./Ontario Farmer

I have never paid much attention to doomsday predictors, but even I know that the earth has a limited capacity and the growth of the human race shows no signs of slowing down.

In November 2011, the global population reached seven billion people and is expected to reach nine billion by 2050! Sustainability is a buzzword that has gained worldwide attention. Finding a definition for sustainability can be more confusing than understanding the loyalty of a Leafs fan, but generally, sustainability has three key parts: environmental stewardship, economic viability, and social responsibility. For an industry to be sustainable, all three pieces need to be in place. If one factor is ignored or focussed on independently, then the system isn’t really sustainable in the long term.

Public opinion seems to be that animal agriculture uses an unreasonable amount of resources (both renewable and non-renewable) and is an alarming contributor to global warming in the form of green house gases (GHG). For example, a 2007 study cited agriculture as contributing 14% of global GHG emissions, which is more than the total emissions from burning fossil fuels for transportation! And that’s when farmers become enemy number ONE on the internet and I get that red face and twitch my family has come to recognise. While it’s true that growing food has an environmental cost, it’s NOT restricted to foods of animal origin. As we, in agriculture strive to maintain and improve food sustainability, we face criticism that animal agriculture is an inherently inefficient method of food production.

If you’ve spent any time on the internet, you will have likely seen the suggestion that farmers are irresponsible hoodlums who should

stop using valuable land growing food for animals and use it to grow people food – preferably kale and sprouts. It’s true that globally we are facing a growing food crisis during the next century. Worldwide, one in seven people have insufficient energy and protein to maintain health and undernutrition accounts for 12% of deaths worldwide. It has been suggested that one of the underlying issues is the so-called “feed vs. food” competition between animals and humans, but that isn’t really true at all. Although lots of foods that are suitable for humans can also be used as animal feed, animal feed and human food are not always interchangeable. In the quest to alleviate world hunger, activist groups often quote the statistic that one third of all cereal grains are fed to livestock.

This leads to the, seemingly logical suggestion, that we should all stop being bloody, meat eating cavemen and switch to an earth loving, vegetarian diet. What they never tell you in this “feed vs. food” argument is that livestock diets include mostly crops and by-products from human

food, fiber, and fuel production that are not suitable as human food and would otherwise be garbage.

Some examples of commonly used feeds in North American livestock systems: By-products A wide range of food by-products are fed to animals depending on region, system, and animal species. It should be noted, also, that pastures used for livestock grazing are based on plants which are completely indigestible by humans. Estimates suggest that 70% of the world’s agricultural area is grassland. The majority of energy stored in these plants is in trapped as cellulose or hemicellulose, which are of ZERO food value to humans. Ruminants (cows, goats and sheep) are unique because they have a rumen with a tremendous microbial population that breaks down the plant cellulose and hemicellulose into simple sugars and, voila… Turn inedible grasses into energy and protein, otherwise known as meat and milk.

The suggestion that animal agriculture should be abolished and

that the global population could survive on a vegetarian or vegan diet is a narrow view and doesn’t consider the consequences of such a change.

Most comparisons are based on swapping out animal based energy for plant based foods on the basis of total calories, without regard for supply of protein, vitamins, or minerals that you also get from animal-source foods.

Nonetheless, there are numerous campaigns aimed at getting consumers to eat less meat, and, often quote a reduction in GHG emissions as the principal reason. The misguided folks behind the “Meatless Mondays” program, encourage consumers to forgo meat for one day per week, and claim they can decrease GHG emissions the equivalent of removing 20 million mid-size sedan cars from the road. The obvious piece they have missed is that a large-scale reduction in meat consumption not only would result in the replacement of animal products with plant-based foods, but additional sources would be required for the diverse byproducts that come from animal agriculture, including leather, fertilizer and pharmaceuticals just to name a few. Take leather – replacing leather with hydrocarbon-based synthetics has a serious global environmental impact because it requires huge amounts of primary energy.

Until the 1950s, the majority of beef was raised using an entirely pasturebased systems and lots of urbanites and outspoken celebrities would like us to return to that. The move to rations containing a significant proportion of corn and by-product feeds is portrayed as an entirely negative development. The truth is that this shift has been a big plus not just for steak lovers, but also for precious mother earth. Average carcass weight, growth rate and feed efficiency have increased dramatically in the last half century resulting in less animals required to produce an equivalent amount of food. This is important relative to livestock’s environmental impact because every animal has a daily nutrient requirement for maintenance, pregnancy, lactation, or growth and thus associated resources (including feed, land, and

water) and GHG emissions. The net result is that beef cattle today use 19% less feed, 33% less land, 12% less water, and 9% less fossil fuels than they did in 1977. The carbon footprint per kg of beef has improved by 16%!

The pork and dairy industries have seen similar improvements.

Nonetheless, the reliance of intensive beef and dairy systems on fossil fuels and fertilizer inputs for feed production and transportation still leads to the suggestion that feedlots have a greater environmental impact than pasture-based beef operations. The reason this isn’t true is that cattle in feedlots convert feed much more efficiently. Numerous studies have demonstrated that GHG emissions per kg of beef are greater in pasture-finished systems than in feedlot systems, by as much as 20%.

Here’s where the animal feed industry makes its contribution. When grains or other vegetable ingredients are processed for human consumption, a significant portion is unusable and becomes a by-product.

For example, when 1,000 kg of sugar beets are processed, the end result is 685 kg water, 140 kg of sugar and whopping 175 kg of feed only suitable for cattle. That means that for every kg of sugar produced there is 1.25 kg of food for animals. Almost 70% of the ingredients used in livestock feed originate from the food processing industry as human inedible residues.

As the world population continues to grow, livestock and poultry will be essential to recycle by-products that are inedible by humans into highquality protein sources.

can be efficiently converted by ruminant animals into meat and milk products.

Fact – The gains made by recycling safe, yet otherwise valueless, byproducts from human food production decrease competition between animals and humans for crops and reduce the environmental impact of food production In a world where the global population is continually growing, the “feed vs food” myth will be pushed on us by well meaning vegans and environmentalist. We need to help them see that the use of by-product feeds in combination with management strategies that improve efficiency will, in fact help make animal agriculture a key pillar of sustainability. The challenge for us is to foster social acceptability and understanding of our industry’s contributions, thus advancing all three pillars of sustainability. It’s not as if we didn’t already have our hands full feeding the 9 billion.

Industry Info Heinz Absorbs Kraft Foods H.J. Heinz Company has purchased Kraft Foods, creating one of the largest food and beverage conglomerations in the world – with annual revenue in excess of $28 billion. Shares of Kraft Foods immediately jumped by more than 14%. Annual cost savings due to increased efficiency for the combined corporation are expected to top $1.5 billion by 2017.

The combined company, which is now the third largest of its kind in North America, will own Kraft, Heinz, Oscar-Mayer, Ore-Ida and other brands. It will maintain headquarters in Pittsburgh, where Heinz is based and also in the Chicago area where Kraft Foods resides.

OnLine Grocery Shopping Tested The Iowa-based Hy-Vee Company is moving ahead with a program called Hy-Vee Aisles Online. Being offered in selected stores are in-home grocery delivery and in-store pickup options. Shoppers visit an online store and complete their orders, an employee then fills the order, the items are scanned loaded and delivered. Or, shoppers can arrange to pick up their order in person.

The services is priced at $4.95 for a delivery order and $2.95 for in-store pickup. If the total order surpasses $100, the fee is dropped. Such sales at Hy-Vee and other stores are estimated to exceed $18 billion within three years. The practice has been in use in Europe for several years.

Consumers Binge in New Year Despite well-intentioned resolutions to “eat better and lose weight,” people buy the greatest amount of food immediately after the holidays, according to a study by a University of Vermont researcher.

The study found that consumer spending on food increases by 15% over the holiday season between Thanksgiving and New Years, with most of the increase attributed to higher levels of junk food. However, shoppers buy even more food after

New Years, the equivalent of a 9% increase in calories above the holiday levels.

Marinating With Beer Many experienced cooks utilize beer in cooking and researchers in Europe report that marinating meat in beer prior to grilling could reduce formation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), which in some studies has been associated with increased risk of colorectal cancer.

According to the research report, black beer showed the highest inhibitory effect, reducing formation of PAH by 53%, followed by nonalcoholic beer, which had a 25% an inhibitory reduction.

Extra Lean Beef Endorsed Retailers now have the opportunity to help identify eight different extra lean items as options for part of an overall healthy diet, using one of the most trusted nutrition icons on food packaging today.

The Beef Checkoff Program has announced that extra lean ground beef that is at least 96% lean, is now certified by the American Heart Association to display its recognized and highly respect Heart-Check mark.

Other cuts that qualify (all USDA Select Grade) are: Bottom Round Steak, Sirloin Tip Steak, Top Sirloin, Petit Roast, Top Sirloin Strips, Top Sirloin Filet, Top Sirloin Kabob; and Top Sirloin Steak, Boneless, Center Cut. Hide Industry Hits New Levels The US hide, skin and leather industry established new records in 2014, exporting more than $2.85 billion worth of cattle hides, pig skins and semi-processed leather products.

According to USDA, China was the largest buyer of cattle hides, followed

by Korea, Taiwan, Mexico and the European Union.

US companies, including producers, processors, brokers and dealers, regularly export more than 90% of total US production of these items and are ranked at the top of raw materials suppliers to the global leather manufacturing industry.

JFK Becomes First Animal Terminal John F. Kennedy Airport in New York will become the first privatelyowned animal terminal in the world.

Cleverly, it will be called “the Ark.” The $48 million project is expected to create 180 jobs and generate $108 million in revenues over its 30-year span.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has signed a longterm lease with Ark Development to design and build the 178,000 square foot animal cargo facility in JFK. The Ark, which is projected to open in early 2016, will follow high standards for “comprehensive veterinary care and quarantine services,” according to a press release.

Hormel Promotes Quick Protein The owner of the iconic Spam canned meat product, Hormel Food Corporation, is planning to compete in the quick-protein snack market with the introduction of dried bitesized versions of Spam. The product will be available in specific markets and grocery stores in three flavors – bacon, classic and teriyaki.

The new product places the company within recent trends among processors to offer on-the-go, proteinbased snack foods to consumers.

Hormel offers more than 20 original varieties of Spam, and the new snacks are expected to provide as much as 10 grams of protein per serving.

Meat Snack Consumption Jumps Consumption of dehydrated, salted meat snacks has increased 18% in the last five years, according to research by National Purchase Diary (NPD). Beef is the leading meat snack, but turkey jerky is the fastest growing snack.

Turkey jerky shipped from food service distributors to restaurants and other food outlets increased by triple digits when compared to a year ago.

Typical time of consumption for meat snacks is between lunch and dinner, but also as a late night snack.

Vitamin A Directs Immune Cells A recent study from Purdue University found that an important set of immune cells that protect the body from infection would be lost without direction provided by Vitamin A. A metabolite, retinoic acid, which comes from digested vitamin A, is necessary for two of the three types of innate immune cells that reside in the intestine to find their proper place.

The mucosal barrier that lines the intestines is the point of entry for many infections, viruses, and parasites, and in a healthy system the innate immune cells sound the alarm for the broader immune response. A vitamin A deficiency is known to lead to an increased susceptibility to disease because of low concentrations of immune cells in the intestines.

Amino Acid / E. coli Interaction New research from the University of Glasgow suggests that an amino acid produced in the brain could help prevent or treat infection from E. coli 0157. E. coli 0517 is found only in the gut, and scientists wonder why it doesn’t spread to other parts of the body.

They concluded that high concentrations of D-Serino, an amino acid, blocks E.coli from attaching to host tissue, and suggesting that altering diets to increase D-serino levels could prevent or event treat infection.

By-Products as Renewable Fuel A growing number of biofuel producers are working with farmers, meatpackers and water management companies to tap into waste for renewable jet fuel and diesel production. According to a recent report, beef tallow and manure are used to produce high-quality, lowcarbon transportation fuel.

A wide range of different agricultural by-products, including organic waste, can be harnessed for renewable fuel. Methane, a potent greenhouse gas, is released into the atmosphere as manure and food decompose, and is also potentially useful for fuel production.

GM Cows Help Fight Diseases SAB Biotherapeutics, a biotech company has developed a herd of genetically modified cattle that have been engineered to produce “fully human” antibodies. The cattle are then treated with vaccines to target diseases such as hantavirus, and Ebola is expected to follow.

Hershey Company Moving to Beef Snacks According to a recent news report, the Hershey Company, widely known for being a premier candy manufacturer with global name recognition, has announced that it is moving into the snack foods sector with the aquisition of Krave Jerky, a Sonoma, California-based company.

Krave is positioned as a leader in production of premium jerky with the distinction of offering such unique flavors as black cherry barbecue, basil citrus and lemon garlic. Analysts are debating whether or not the move is in response to declining demand for chocolate products or recognition of growing potential for protein snacks.

Food Wate Reduction Needed Reducing consumer food waste could save as much as $300 billion per year by 2030, according to a new report by the Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP) and the Global Commission on the Economy and Climate. To achieve such a goal would require a 20 to 50% reduction in consumer food waste.

One-third of all food produced in the world ends up as waste, while the value of global consumer food was more than $400 billion per year. The report also identifies other significant opportunitites for reducing waste in agriculture, transportation, storage and consumption.

India Number Two Beef Exporter Ironically, India where 80% of the population is Hindu, a religion that believes that cattle are sacred and not to be eaten, has become the second largest exporter of beef in the world.

India’s meat industry claims the product being exported comes from buffalo, but that claim is challenged by many groups.

and it is against the law to export beef. It is likely that meat from cattle is being slipped into the buffalo market. In 2014, India exported $4.3 billion worth of beef and that figure is expected to rise by at least $200 million in 2015.

Flying on Animal Fat United Airlines (UA) and Fulcrum Bioenergy have announced that UA will begin flying commercial jets using bio-fuel from household waste, plant oil and animal fat. UA is spending $30 million in equity investments with Fulcrum, a California-based company.

Fulcrum has developed and commercialized the ability to convert municipal solid waste into low cost sustainable aviation biofuel. The fuel can be directly blended with traditional jet fuels. A biofuel refinery is under construction in Nevada to open in 2017, with plans for five more plants around the country.

Healthy Fat in Beef A recent research article addressing the biology and biochemistry of beef marbling and its effects on production systems, carcass and fat quality, concludes that against consumer perception, ground beef is healthy for consumers.

Other studies state that ground beef increased high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol (the “good” cholesterol) in both men and women.

According to the research article, as cattle fatten and put down marbling, the fat becomes healthier because there is a replacement of saturated fats with oleic acid.

Farm Dirt = Healthy Kids In a recent study, researchers pinpointed a protein that affects the structural cells that make up the lining of the lungs, confirming that the lungs play an important role in the development of allergy responses.

The researchers suggest people that grew up on a farm have fewer respiratory problems than the general population because farms have the best exposure to germs for preventing allergic reactions later in life.
