By the time you read this, the fall female sales will be wrapped up and with the interest and enthusiasm in the Charolais industry I am sure we will look back at a very successful fall season. The attendance at the fall shows and early sales in Eastern Canada was very good with strong demand for the genetics on offer. The numbers at the National Show at Agribition in Regina were way up and it was a great event showcasing Canadian Charolais proudly. The larger crowds and enthusiasm in the barn made for an historic event with the sale averaging right next to $10,000 with solid interest from across the country. Charolais also did very well in the interbreed competitions which culminated with a Charolais female being named champion in the Beef Supreme Challenge. Next year our National Charolais Show will be held in conjunction with the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in Toronto. There is already some discussion amongst breeders to take

some cattle from Western Canada to participate in the event. With a good contingent of breeders and cattle usually attending Agribition from Ontario, it would be nice to see this reciprocated and also have some from Quebec and the Maritimes be there, to truly make it a National event. From November 8th to 16th, Candace and I had the privilege of touring 33 Norwegian farmers around Alberta. It is always enjoyable to show your country off and to see it through the eyes of your International guests and the questions they ask. From ranch tour, to feedlot, to auction market, to western movie set there was lots to see and do including a day at the large Agri-Trade equipment show in Red Deer and a couple of days at Farmfair International in Edmonton, including a night at the CFR rodeo. 2016 will be an exciting time in the Charolais business in Canada with the interest in bull sales already starting. The move is on to more crossbreeding and we are situated very well to capitalize and help many commercial producers improve their bottom lines

with Charcross calves. The premium paid for the identifiable Charolais calves was huge this fall with $100 to $200 a calf more being paid. Tell our story and help make the cow-calf producer more profitable. Bull sale season is just around the corner and Craig and I are already working on our picturing schedules for the many ads and catalogues for the sales that will be happening. I hope that your bull pen is looking good and that you will feed and promote them to their fullest potential. We are poised for a great bull selling season, but you still need to work on staying in touch with past customers and getting the best pictures for the promotion of them to maximize your returns. Quand vous lirez ces lignes, la vente automnal de femelles aura suscité beaucoup d’enthousiasme et d’intérêt dans l’industrie du charolais, et nous aurons connu un automne plein de succès. Les assistances aux expositions et aux ventes d’automne dans l’est du Canada ont été très fortes avec la génétique qui y était offerte. Le nombre d’exposants à l’Agribition de Regina était en hausse cette année et les Charolais Canadien ont été une fière vitrine pour la race. La plus grande et survolté foule fut dans l’étable a la vente qui fut un évènement historique avec une moyenne tout près de $10,000.00 aura connu un solide intérêt à travers le pays. Le Charolais a aussi connu beaucoup de succès dans l’inter race femelle en remportant la Grande Femelle de l’expo. L’an prochain l’Expo Nationale Charolais se tiendra simultanément avec l’Expo Royale de Toronto (Royal Agricultural Winter Fair) il y a toujours des discutions entre les éleveurs pour envoyer les meilleurs animaux de l’ouest du Canada pour participer à

cet évènement. Avec une bonne participation des gens de l’Ontario à l’Agribition ce sera juste le retour de l’ascenseur pour ceux de l’ouest, il serait bien aussi d’avoir des gens du Québec et des Maritimes pour faire un évènement vraiment National. Du 8 au 16 novembre, Candace et moi avons eu le privilège de faire visiter l’Alberta à 33 Agriculteurs Norvégiens. C’est toujours plaisant de faire visiter notre pays et de voir à travers leurs yeux et les questions qu’ils posent. Des visites de ranch aux parcs d’engraissements en passant par les encans d’animaux aux films western ce qui faisait beaucoup de choses à voir, incluant une journée à l’Expo d’Équipement à RedDeere et une couple de jours à l’Expo International de Edmonton (farmfair) incluant une soirée au Rodéo CFR. 2016 sera très excitant pour les affaires dans le Charolais, avec un intérêt particulier pour les ventes de taureaux qui viennent juste de commencer. Le mouvement est de plus en plus pour le croisement, et nous nous situons avantageusement pour aider plusieurs éleveurs commerciaux à améliorer leur croisement avec des veaux croisés

Charolais. Pour les veaux de choix identifiable Charolais cet automne les prix étaient de $100.00 à $200.00 plus élevés. N’hésitez pas à en parler et rendre le vache-veau plus profitable. La saison des ventes de taureaux est à nos portes, et Craig et moi, sommes prêts à répondre à vos demandes, pour prendre des photos et commentaires pour vos catalogues de ventes. J’espère que vos parcs de taureaux regarde bien, et que la nourriture est abondante pour leur permettre d’atteindre leur plein potentiel génétique. Nous sommes confiant d’avoir encore cette année une saison de vente extraordinaire, mais nous avons toujours besoin de travailler fort, et de nous tenir en contact constant avec nos acheteurs passé, et de leur montrer nos meilleurs photos de promotion pour maximiser nos ventes. What a year it has been; 2015 continued to bring out the best of Charolais! The CCA Board of Directors met in Calgary this fall and reviewed the many successes of the past year. With gracious thanks to Candace and Helge By of By Livestock, the World Charolais Technical Congress will remain a highlight of 2015 for many years to come. International guests were treated to Canadian hospitality throughout Western Canada that didn’t disappoint. Record sales of Canadian Charolais seed stock were realized with tremendous interest and support of our high quality genetics spanning the globe. Right here at home, the Provincial Associations as a whole reported renewed enthusiasm, Charolais premiums and a general buzz in the industry. CCA Whole Herd Enrollments saw an increase over 2014 as a result. The EYE Committee would like to commend all those who applied for the 2015 CCA Scholarships. It was a true pleasure for those on the committee to read through the inspiring messages and get a first hand look at the next generation of Charolais Leaders. The strength of the leadership skills, the involvement with the breed and your respective communities is remarkable. We received a significant number of highly qualified applicants for this year’s funds. Of the sixteen strong Charolais Banner • December 2015

applications, we had the tough decision to select four recipients. Congratulations to: Laura Weinbender of Canora, SK as the 2015 Recipient of the $1500 Dale Norheim Memorial Scholarship and to Jessica Sperber of Rimbey, AB, Luke Marshall of Red Deer County, AB and Genevieve Dubuc, StEulalie, QC for each receiving a 2015 CCA Scholarship of $1000. Looking to 2016, please remember that Memberships and Whole Herd Enrollments are due January 1, annually. Please report any changes of address or account information to the CCA Office. Charolais Banner subscription fees have increased to $45 for 2016 as a direct result of postal, printing and paper fees. You will see the increase on your 2016 CCA Membership fees. New for 2016, you can view the Charolais Banner online! The Banner will be available online immediately upon publication. As we move into the New Year, CCA will be optimizing funding and will be conducting additional testing with HD panels to help work toward our goal of publishing Genomically Enhanced EPDs. We continue to work closely with Doug Blair, CBBC, AGI and various University researchers to move forward in exploring ways to better position the Charolais breed for expansion in the beef industry. We are committed to due diligence and exploring what we can do as a Board to move the breed forward.

DÉCEMBRE 2015 L’année 2015 restera marquer dans nos mémoires étant une des meilleures pour la race Charolais. Une réflexion, sur toutes les activités remarquables,a été discutée lors de la rencontre du conseil d’administration de l’association à l’automne. Malgré le grand nombre de faits saillants, la conférence technique mondiale Charolais est certainement l’apogée de l’année. Cet évènement a eu lieu grâce à Candace et Helge By. Nous les remercions infiniment pour leur implication. Nos invités internationaux ont été traités à l'hospitalité de l’ouest canadien tout au long de leur séjour. Le commerce de génétiques Charolais soit d’animaux vivants, de semence ou d’embryons, a été réalisé grâce au grand intérêt pour nos animaux canadiens de haute qualité. Au niveau des associations provinciales dans l’ensemble, on signale un enthousiasme renouvelé, des primes pour les animaux aux caractères Charolais et un buzz général dans l'industrie. En conséquence l’association canadienne a aussi jouit d’une hausse d’enrôlements d’animaux comparativement à 2014. Le comité de sélection des bourses d’études tient à féliciter tous les ceux qui ont appliqués. Les membres du comité ont eu un immense plaisir à lire les messages et se réjouissent de l’autorité qui existe parmi nos futurs leaders. Leurs accomplissements, tout autant en agriculture que dans leur

communauté, sont remarquables et inspirent une grande confiance. Cette année, nous avons reçu seize applications, ce qui a augmenté le défi de sélection pour le comité. En préparation pour la nouvelle année, je vous prie de vous rappeler que vos cotisations et vos enrôlements de troupeau sont dus le 1er janvier. C’est aussi l’occasion parfaite de mettre vos coordonnées à jour. L’abonnement au Charolais Banner a subi une augmentation directement reliée aux coûts de postage et d’impression. Vous remarquerez que vos frais annuels augmentent pour refléterle nouveau tarif de $45. Toutefois à partir de janvier 2016, le Banner sera affiché sur l’internet aussitôt qu’un numéro sera publié. En 2016, votre association continuera d’utiliser ses ressources financières pour tester des bêtes par ADN avec un panneau de haute densité ce qui est nécessaire pour atteindre le but d’avoir des EPD génétiquement rehaussés. Nous collaborons toujours avec notre consultant Doug Blair, le Conseil Conjoint des Races de Boucherie

(CBBC), AGI (l’organisme qui calcule nos évaluations) et diverses universités pour s’assurer que la race Charolais empoigne une position favorable dans l’industrie. Le conseil d’administration explore sérieusement toutes les options qui feront avancer la race. CCA assemblée générale annuelle L’assemblée générale se tiendra en juin, dans le centre nord de l'Alberta. 2016 Conference & Show Luke Marshall, National Board Director

Well as the fall show season has come to an end and most of the sales have wrapped up, it seems like a good opportunity to look back on the past year and look ahead to next year. Most recently on behalf of the National Board I would like to thank Wilgenbusch Charolais, Rosso Charolais, Pleasant Dawn Charolais & Eaton Charolais, Hunter Charolais, and Horseshoe E Charolais for donating semen for the CCYA Semen auction at Agribition this year. I would also like to thank Langstaff Charolais, Scott Johnston Charolais, CharMaine Ranching, Phillips Farms, and Charmill Ranching for purchasing these semen packs. Support from both the buyers and donators is greatly appreciated. Also looking back at the sales we want to remind any juniors that purchased a Charolais heifer this fall to make sure to take advantage of the buy and show program. Also keep in mind that you will have the opportunity to get semen for the female purchased or one of your other

females through the genetics program that will open in the New Year. Hopefully any of the juniors that got semen through the genetics program last spring are getting excited to see the results of this program when their cows calve. The end of this show season means looking ahead to the next one and for me the first one I have on my list is the CCYA Conference that will be held in Olds, Alberta, July, 2016. The rest of the Alberta board and I are very excited to be hosting the conference and having a great time as usual. We have some exciting events and opportunities planned that are sure to make it a great time. If you have any questions about the conference now or in the future feel free to contact any Alberta board member or I and we would gladly help you out. If I don’t see any of you again this fall, I want to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year and look forward to seeing everyone again in the spring at bull sales as well as at the conference in July.

OBITUARY

Harvey Wood Harvey Wood of Alameda, Saskatchewan, passed away peacefully at his residence with family by his side on Friday, November 13th at the age of 82. Harvey is survived by his wife Audrey; son Kerry (Laura); three daughters: Karla (Lorne) Kennedy, Karen (Wes) Andersen and Karel Wood 22

(Michael Hutchinson); 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Harvey and Audrey were tireless promoters of Charolais and were founding members of the 49’ers Charolais Breeders in southeast Saskatchewan and participated in that sale until its end. Their herd name was Char-K Charolais, which they started in 1966 with the purchase of some high percentage females. Harvey was secretary of the Charolais Banner • December 2015

Saskatchewan Charolais Association for seven years from 1973 to 1979 and they were awarded an SCA Honor Scroll in 1995 and a CCA Honor Roll in 2008 in recognition of their work for the Charolais breed. Harvey still enjoyed coming to the cattle sales in Alameda and always had time for a visit. He was very genuine and his big smile and quick to laugh personality will be missed by all who knew him.

Prevention of Calf Scours Roy Lewis DVM

Most calf scour documents focus on treatment of calf scours and methods involved to eliminate an outbreak. In this article preventative measures will be discussed highlighting management procedures, which have been proven to substantially reduce all scours. Nothing is foolproof but if certain measures are followed incidence can be drastically reduced. There are certain management procedures you want to avoid as they markedly increase the possibility of a scour outbreak. FOSTERING of calves is a common procedure with twins but purchasing calves for this purpose can be a recipe for disaster. If you absolutely must purchase a calf do so from a BEEF herd, which has a good management system, and is scours vaccinated. Keep the pair isolated in a separate area for two weeks. The best strategy is NOT to purchase calves for fostering; the risk is not worth it. The same thing applies to purchasing cow calf pairs or heavily pregnant cows just prior to the calving season. Two scenarios can result. Either their calves may start scouring from the cows not being exposed to organisms on your farm. The opposite can also happen: your own calves scouring from not being exposed in the past to the organisms the new cows have brought in. This is where maintaining a closed herd at least close to calving is a very very good idea. The key is preventing the first case. Once it happens, the organism is quickly seeded out in the environment and if crowding is present, all in contact calves become at risk. So even if you purchase purebred heifers, make sure they are on the same management system as your herd. Herds with a high percentage of first calf heifers (>20 %) run a greater risk of scours for several reasons. Heifer’s colostrums are never as charged

with as many immunoglobulins against the scours organisms. Mothering with heifers is a bit harder and with more difficult births heifer’s calves are generally more stressed. Always have several litres of good frozen colostrum on hand. Some producers will drench most first calf heifer’s calves with colostrum to supplement the heifer’s own colostrum. At least give colostrum to any stressed, slow to rise calves. Drenching with colostrum may take time now but it could have huge benefits later in the calf’s life. Try if possible to calve heifers separate from cows. It makes them easier to watch and if any scours do start, it can be maintained. Heifers mother up a lot better in a smaller group. Check the suckle reflex on newborns calves by sticking a couple of fingers in the calf’s mouth. If it is a weak suckle reflex after being born 20 minutes, give the calf colostrum. Scour vaccination should be mandatory in most circumstances and the ones on the market are all pretty good I believe. Especially in first calf heifers, if there is past history of scours or in herds where crowding is an issue. We find all herds once they reach 100 cows can greatly reduce their scours problems by vaccinating. This however is not a panacea for sloppy management. Any calf no matter how well protected can succumb to scours if exposure is too great. Make sure and give the scours vaccine at the ideal time before calving that is recommended. The calving area must have been cleaned of manure the year before and preferably not have cows in it more than 30 days prior to calving. The manure allows a buildup of the undesirable organisms and this is exacerbated in the spring thaw when melting snow washes through the manure packs. for so any sick calves and their mothers can be immediately removed from the group and kept there until no more diarrhea is evident. Always treat the sick calves last after the calving herd has been checked. It is imperative to change your coveralls and dip your boots before going back to the main herd. A product called Virkon is an excellent disinfectant against bacteria and viruses and can be mixed in a boot dip. Farmers can be the biggest cause of spreading scours around the farm so be very cognizant of this fact. Esophageal feeders have also been incriminated. I have most large producers have a separate feeder for giving colostrum and treating scouring calves with electrolytes. Also disinfect inbetween usages with the virkon disinfectant. Nutritionally you must keep cows in a condition score of 2.5 to 3.5 at calving. This insures good colostrum and strong cows for quick deliveries. With exercise in the winter cows will be in better shape to calve quickly. One study compared calf shelters and wind breaks to barns to nothing at all. Not surprisingly, the calf shelters and wind breaks caused the greatest reduction in neonatal disease. Even though barns may seem the best the higher ambient temperature allows proliferation of the organisms. The calves are usually quite confined as well. There is no doubt a barn for obstetrical procedures etc have their purpose but calf shelters give a stress free environment especially in a snowstorm. Most scours outbreaks occur from management breakdown and then allowing the first case to spread. By following most of the management procedures listed above calf scours can be kept to an absolute minimum. Lorne McCorriston 1943 -2015

Lorne Douglas McCorriston, beloved husband of Joy McCorriston; devoted father to Scott, Mark and Joanne; loving grandpa to Taylor, Mackenzie, Ainsley and Jase, passed away at Minot, North Dakota on Wednesday, October

28th, 2015 at the age of 72 years. Lorne started in Charolais in the 1973 and dispersed the McCorr Charolais herd in 1997 to expand his grain farming operation. Located at Moosomin, Saskatchewan, he was a member of the S.E. Charolais Breeders participating in their annual bull and female sales. McCorr Charolais also

consigned to the Ag-Ex sale and tested and marketed bulls at Douglas Test Station in Manitoba for many years. Their most famous bull was Pleasant Dawn Monte 1Z which Lorne bought out of Douglas and then leased to Alta Genetics who marketed him world wide.

I would like to recognize the efforts of the exhibitors, volunteers, sponsors, staff and guests in making the 2015 show season an incredible success. The combined efforts at countless shows across Canada demonstrates why we are recognized for our world class genetics. By all accounts, cattle entries were up over last year, there were more international visitors than there have been in several years, and the cattle looked terrific. As we look forward to 2016 and we begin strategizing for next year, I encourage you to look at adopting new technologies into your operation. This may be a new farm management software program, an updated piece of machinery, or look at incorporating new science based genetic selection methods. The cattle market has seen several of its best years in decades as

of late and now is a good time to invest in moving your farm operation into the future. In an increasing globally competitive landscape such as the beef cattle industry, it is important to be efficient and utilize all available technologies. If you wait to see how it works out for your neighbour or someone from another breed, it may be too late. As a high cost producer, we can compete, but we will have the greatest chance of success by utilizing and embracing the tools available to us in Canada. The inaugural Canadian Beef Industry Conference (CBIC) will be held in Calgary from August 9-12, 2016. This event is geared toward producers as there will be sessions that are directly relevant to your farm operations. It will also be an opportunity to become engaged with industry organizations and network with other breeders, commercial

cattlemen, international guests, researchers and government officials. More information on the conference will be available over the course of the coming months on the website www.canadianbeefindustryconference .com. Consider this your invitation to attend and I look forward to seeing you there. The CBBC will continue to work on behalf of purebred producers to develop markets for Canadian genetics. We will also work closely with industry and government to ensure that the unique perspective of purebred breeders is heard.
