Welcome to our 6th Annual Bull Sale!
What a crazy and interesting year. Hopefully, everyone has managed to stay healthy through this unpredictable global pandemic. Never in a million years would I have thought anything like this would happen in my life time…. boy was I wrong. Although the feedlot didn’t have a good year, we were very blessed to have some early rains that gave us some awesome grass production. We were also very fortunate on the farming end of things, as we avoided most of the hail storms and the crops ended up very good with excellent prices. This year we have another outstanding set of bulls to choose from. Although our birth weights may be a bit higher than some producers and in some cases are weaning weights are lower as well. I want everyone to know that our calves are raised on there mothers’ milk and grass, that’s it. We do not feed any creep feed. Our January calves are weaned in the first half of August and the April calves in the last half of October. Once they are weaned they are fed a silage based ration with very little grain in the ration. The biggest changes you will notice in our catalog this year is that you will not see any bulls with a birth weight over 120 lb. Its not that we don’t have any, we just decided not to put them in the sale, and we will use them on our own commercial cows. The other thing that is noticeable is the size of our January calves. They have more skeletal growth and weight this year over last year. I believe the biggest reason for this is quite simple. It is the quality of the silage. I learned a very good lesson last year and that was, hailed on silage just simply does not have what young growing animals need to show their true growth and genetic potential. Unfortunately with COVID, it does not look like we will be having a normal sale again this year. We strongly encourage people to phone ahead and come out to have a look at the bulls before the sale. We all look forward to the time when things will get back to somewhat normal and hopefully that is before our bull sale, but if it isn’t, we want to be as prepared as possible. Welcome to the 6th Annual Coyote Flats Bull Sale.
The quality of their bulls this year is the best they have ever offered. There is a mix of two-year old and yearling bulls for your appraisal, with top quality in both divisions. From calving ease to big performance, there is something for the most discriminating commercial or seedstock producer. The coming two-year old bulls are from a summer calving program designed to produce two-year olds, and are developed slowly, are sound, free moving and correct. The yearling offering, from the winter calving program, is not over conditioned and again, is developed on a good growing, not finishing ration. The boys at Coyote Flats want these bulls to go out and work right away and last for you. As you go through the catalogue, and watch the videos, you will want to make the trip to see the operation, the bulls, and the many pens of Charcross feeders, as many of them carry their genetics. If you can’t make it sale day, you can view the sale and bid on DLMS, or on the phone. These Lohues families are committed to all aspects of the cattle business, from the purebred industry, to having a commercial herd themselves, to running a 6,000 head feedlot, which is as nice as you will find. COVID-19 Restrictions
If crowd sizes are restricted due to COVID-19, please take the opportunity to view the cattle at the farm prior to the sale or sale day morning. You will have the opportunity to bid online, over the phone, or leave a bid with any of the sale staff in attendance.
Video Sale
All bulls will sell by video and not enter a sale ring. Plan to come early to view the bulls.
Wintering Program
All bulls can be left at Coyote Flats Charolais until May 31st. After June 1st there will be a $3/day board fee. Please insure all bulls being left for wintering. Bulls left will be eligible for terms of half paid sale day and half on delivery.
Insurance
Insurance will be available sale day.
Delivery
Deduct $100 from the purchase price of each bull you take home sale day. Otherwise, there is free delivery within 300 km.

“Every bull sold comes with a bid on your calves in the fall” This program was developed so that we could become your partner in the cattle business. A successful partnership must benefit both parties.

• Excellent sale price: We pay top dollar for the calves that enter our feedlot. We can also offer to contract your calves during the summer months. • Less stress: On the day you wean your calves, you already know your price and don’t have to worry about what price you are going to get or what the weather is going to do. No worries about calves getting cut out because of a minor problem or off colour. We are also flexible on delivery times and dates. • Less shrink: We have a government inspected scale. The calves are weighed on the truck and the shrink is determined on a sliding scale based on distance from our feedlot. • No sales commission: All that you pay for is the brand inspection and the trucking to get your calves to our feedlot. • Pride: You can come back at anytime to the feedlot and have a look at how your calves are doing.

When Mark and the feeding crew sat down with us to put a nutrition program together for their bulls, they had one clear goal in mind. They wanted to grow bulls with a high roughage diet that would support strong breeding soundness, ensuring that customers would be able to take their bulls home with confidence that they would get their job done and last for years to come. These bulls have been raised on a chelated mineral program that was designed to enhance immunity, semen quality and strong foot structure. We have formulated a balanced ration that meets growth curve requirements necessary for proper breeding maturation that allows for their superior genetics to be passed on. Coyote Flats is committed to their customers through the feeder cattle buyback program, with a vested interest in raising a quality product for everyone involved. This year marks the sixth annual bull sale that Coyote Flats Charolais has put together and once again, on behalf of the veterinarians at the Coaldale Veterinary Clinic, I am very pleased to provide some insight into the health practices of this organization. I have had a close working relationship with them for over 25 years and in all my dealings with Coyote Flats Charolais, I have found them to act with a great deal of integrity and good faith towards their customers and towards the beef industry in general. I have found Mark to be very conscientious with respect to the health of the cattle that are on the farm, and those that are to be sold. Vaccinations are carried out in a timely manner to help prevent disease in the individual animals, as well as in the calves that are raised. All cows receive a 5-way (IBR, PI3, BRSV, BVD Type I & II) modified live virus vaccine pre-breeding, to protect the fetus from infection with IBR or BVD. This program is started while the cows are still calves, so all mature cows have received at least 2 doses of the 5-way viral before first conception and then annually pre-breeding after that. When the calves are born they are initially given an intranasal IBR, PI3, BRSV and an intranasal Mannheimia hemolytica and Pasteurella multocida for protection against respiratory illness. At branding time, the calves are given a modified live 5-way viral to continue this protection, as well as an 8-way Clostridial vaccine that also contains Histophilus somni. The 5-way viral and the 8-way Clostridial vaccines are boosted at weaning time, and the heifers are given the 5-way viral pre-breeding. This program provides maximum protection for the calves against respiratory disease, as well as protecting the fetus from BVD infection and abortion from these viruses. The bull calves go through this vaccination program as well, and before leaving the farm they also receive Fusogard and the booster for protection against footrot during the breeding season. Coyote Flats Charolais has a comprehensive herd health program and have invited the Coaldale Veterinary Clinic to work closely with them in all aspects of their cattle operation. This involves everything from pregnancy diagnosis and breeding soundness evaluation of the bulls, to regular herd health visits for examinations of sick animals, and also training purposes. We are also involved in the feedlot aspect of this farm and in the past, many of the calves that have been inducted into the feedlot have been purchased from producers that have sourced their bulls from Coyote Flats Charolais. This close working relationship has proven beneficial for the cow/calf producer as well as Coyote Flats Charolais. The Lohues family is always interested in developing more of these relationships with producers that are purchasing bulls and would welcome any inquiries regarding providing calves for sale to the Coyote Flats Charolais feedlot and vaccination and health protocols for the cows and calves from these herds. The Percentage Calving Chart
1. An average cow of any breed should be able to calve 7% of her body weight. 2. M ost Charolais cows will weigh between 1400-1800 lb., expected calf weight to range from 98-126 lb. 3. M ost Red Angus cows will weigh between 1200-1600 lb., expected calf weight to range from 84-112 lb. 4. C alving ease is MORE important than birth weight because a longer sided calf may calve easy, but the birth weight is higher.

This bull is worth $4,500 more than the average bull who will keep your weaning weights the same. Take this formula and put your own figures in and see what you can afford to pay. This equation does not consider the increase in value due to calving ease, higher quality replacement heifers, yearling growth, feedlot gain and improved carcass quality.
Example: A bull who will add 30 lb to the weaning weight of each of his calves mated to 25 cows per year for 4 years and you sell the calves for $1.50 per pound. 30 x 25 = 750 x 4 = 3000 x $1.50 = $4,500

Birth Weight & Calving Ease University studies in Wyoming and data from Montana and Colorado lend credence to the following conclusions: 1. The birth weight itself influences calving ease by 65%. 2. The female has 60-70% influence on birth weight of her calf. 3. T he bull has 30-40% influence on birth weight of his progeny. 4. Pelvic measurement and angle, as well as the shape of the calf have 35-40% influence on calving ease. 5. Length of gestation greatly affects birth weight. A fetus can gain over one pound per day in the last days of gestation. 6. W eather and temperature in the last 30 days affect the length of gestation. 7. Size and maturity of the cow influence calving ease.

Most commercial producers do not take birth weights. Guessing is as inaccurate as driving with a broken speedometer - what’s thought to be 55 mph may in fact be 65 to 70 mph, and what’s thought to be 70-80 lb may actually be 80-90 lb. Remember, everything is relevant. Increased growth, frame and performance will increase BW. A longer bodied calf will weigh more. If a calf is expected to have genetics for growth, it will display this prior to birth as well as after. As a rule of thumb, it takes a calf weighing 85 lb at birth to finish at 1200-1250 lb. A cow should easily give birth to a calf weight 8% of her own body weight. Thus a 1200 lb cow should give birth to a 96 lb calf with ease. Continued selection for light birth weights will ultimately reduce the mature sizes and performance of your cattle.

Terms & Conditions Terms: The terms of the sale are cash or cheque payable immediately after the sale in Canadian funds. All settlements must be made with the sale clerks before cattle will be released. The right of property will not pass until final payment is made.
Bidding: Each animal will sell to the highest bidder. Bidders unable to attend the sale may phone their bids and instructions to the sale manager, auctioneer or special representatives. Bids must be received in sufficient time prior to the sale. Disputes: Bidding will be reopened between the parties involved. If no further bid is made, the buyer will be the person from whom the auctioneer accepted the last bid. The auctioneer’s decision is final. Announcements: Announcements made from the auction block will take precedence over printed matter in the catalogue. Buyers are cautioned to pay close attention to announcements. Purchaser’s Risk: Each animal becomes the risk of the purchaser as soon as sold. Animals will be cared for at the purchaser’s risk for a reasonable length of time. All animals left with the seller must be insured. Certificate of Registration: Each animal will carry papers issued by the Canadian Charolais Association. A certificate of registry duly transferred will be furnished to the buyer after payment has been made. Delivery: Assistance will be given in making delivery after the sale. The purchaser agrees shipping arrangements will be at the convenience of the seller, but will be as soon as practical after the sale, at the buyer’s risk. Breeder Guarantee: Should any bull fourteen months of age or over, fail to prove a breeder after being used on cows known to be breeders, the matter shall be reported in writing to the

seller within six months following the date of purchase or six months after the bull has reached fourteen months of age. The seller has the right and privilege of six months to prove the bull a breeder. No guarantee is given that semen collected from the bull will freeze.
Exception Guarantee: In the case where the animal is subjected to any hormonal or surgical reproductive techniques after the sale, this guarantee shall be null and void. The seller is not responsible for damage caused by foreign bodies after the animal has been sold or for sickness not apparent at sale time. In no event shall the seller be responsible for more than the purchase price. Accidents: Although every precaution will be taken to protect the safety and comfort of buyers, neither the sale manager, auctioneer, or sellers assume any responsibility and disclaim any liability, legal or otherwise, in the event of accident or loss of property. Sale Manager: By Livestock is only acting as a medium between the buyer and seller and is not responsible for failure on the part of either party to live up to their obligations; or for the truth of any warrantees or representations, expressed or implied. By Livestock assumes no obligation to enforce or collect monies between parties. By Livestock assumes no responsibility for any credit extended by the seller to the buyer. Any legal action taken in exceptional cases must be between the buyer and the seller. The buyer must look to the seller for fulfilment of all guarantees and representations. Insurance: Insurance will be available sale day. Pictures: By attending the sale you are granting permission for your picture to be used for promotional and advertising purposes relating to the sale.
