Welcome to our Fifth Annual Bull Sale!

2019 was filled with many challenges and rewards. However, we were reminded of how blessed we are to have so many great customers, and we are excited to see what 2020 brings us.

The challenges started early in 2019 with the lengthy cold snap in February and part of March. I don’t ever recall having calves freeze their ears when they were a month old, but that’s what happened last year. Our spring and summer were good, but very dry. Then came August 6… the hailstorm from, well, you know, h e double hockey sticks. We have never been hit so hard before. Every one of our quarters was hit by the hailstorm, and all but 2 suffered 100% damage. But, like with all things difficult, you have to try to find the silver linings, and there certainly were some. I was amazed at how many people called and offered their support or their help with finding us enough silage. We were also very fortunate to be doing a rebuild on the oldest part of the feedlot because if we were not doing it already, we would have started that day, as I am sure we would have had many fences blown over. Hopefully, we do not see another storm like that for quite some time.

George and I both had new additions to our families as well. George received his first grandson, Aro, in August from his son and daughter-inlaw, Connor and Krysten, and I welcomed Cody Nelson into our family when he married my daughter Jessica in September.

Charolais cross calves once again were at the top of the market last fall. It definitely pays to be using a Charolais bull! Calving ease is first and foremost on most everyone’s bull selection criteria, and I certainly don’t blame them. We all need to start with a live calf to be successful. I would love to tell you that all of our bulls are 90 to 100 pounds when they are born, but that is certainly not the case. Yes, we have some bulls with bigger birth weights, but these are from bigger cows, and they are just longer when they are born. Every year I say the same thing, but I think it is worth repeating that length adds weight at birth without calving difficulty. The best part about it is it adds weight at weaning and at slaughter as well. When we select a herdsire for our herd, one of the first things we look for is length of body. I can honestly say you can go out and buy with confidence, knowing our bulls will sire calves that will calve easy. As well, all our bulls have been vaccinated twice with Fusoguard before the sale to help prevent footrot.

Our “WIN-WIN” program was once again a huge success this last fall with over half of our feedlot filled with calves from our customers. If you are interested in finding out more about the program, please don’t hesitate to give me a call and I can answer all of your questions.

Welcome to Coyote Flats Charolais and the home of the Win-Win program. This is their 5th Annual Bull Sale but over 25 years of producing purebred Charolais bulls that will work in all aspects of the industry.

The coming two-year old bulls are from a summer calving program designed to produce two-year olds that are developed slowly, are sound, free moving and correct. The yearling offering from the winter calving program is not over conditioned and again are developed on a good growing, not finishing ration. The boys at Coyote Flats want these bulls to go out and work right away and last for you. They could all be a couple hundred pounds heavier, but that wouldn’t change the bull.

These Lohues families are committed to all aspects of the cattle business from the purebred industry to having a commercial herd themselves, to running a 6,000 head feedlot, which is as nice as you will find.

We can also offer to contract your calves during the summer months.

• Less stress: On the day you wean your calves you already know your price and don’t have to worry about what price you are going to get or what the weather is going to do. • Less shrink: We have a government inspected scale. The calves are weighed on the truck and the shrink is determined on a sliding scale based on distance from our feedlot.

• No sales commission: All that you pay for is the brand inspection and the trucking to get your calves to our feedlot.

They wanted to grow bulls with a high roughage diet that would support strong breeding soundness, ensuring that customers would be able to take their bulls home with confidence that they would get their job done and last for years to come.

These bulls have been raised on a chelated mineral program that was designed to enhance immunity, semen quality and strong foot structure. We have formulated a balanced ration that meets growth curve requirements necessary for proper breeding maturation that allows for their superior genetics to be passed on. Coyote Flats is committed to their customers through the feeder cattle buyback program, with a vested interest in raising a quality product for everyone involved. and then the heifers are given the 5-way viral pre-breeding. This program provides maximum protection for the calves against respiratory disease as well as protecting the fetus from BYD infection and abortion from these viruses.

To whom it may concern,

This year marks the fifth annual bull sale that Coyote Flats Charolais has put together and once again, on behalf of the veterinarians at the Coaldale Veterinary Clinic, I am very pleased to provide some insight into the health practices of this organization. I have had a close working relationship with them for over 20 years and in all my dealings with Coyote Flats Charolais I have found them to act with a great deal of integrity and good faith towards their customers and towards the beef industry in general. I have found Mark to be very conscientious with respect to the health of the cattle that are on the farm, and those that are to be sold. Vaccinations are carried out in a timely manner to help prevent disease in the individual animals as well as in the calves that are raised. All cows receive a 5-way (IBR, PB, BRSV, BYD Type I & II) modified live virus vaccine pre-breeding to protect the fetus from infection with IBR or BYD. This program is started while the cows are still calves, so all mature cows have received at least 2 doses of the 5- way viral before first conception and then annually prebreeding after that. When the calves are born they are initially given an intranasal IBR, PB, BRSV and an intranasal Mannheimia hemolytica and Pasteurella multocida for protection against respiratory illness. At branding time the calves are given a modified live 5-way viral to continue this protection, as well as an 8-way Clostridial vaccine that also contains Histophilus somni. The 5-way viral and the 8-way Clostridial vaccines are boosted at weaning time

The bull calves go through this vaccination program as well and before leaving the farm they also receive Fusogard and the booster for protection against footrot during the breeding season.

Coyote Flats Charolais has a comprehensive herd health program and have invited the Coaldale Veterinary Clinic to work closely with them in all aspects of their cattle operation. This involves everything from pregnancy diagnosis and breeding soundness evaluation of the bulls, to regular herd health visits for examinations of sick animals, and also training purposes. We are also involved in the feedlot aspect of this farm and in the past, many of the calves that have been inducted into the feedlot have been purchased from producers that have sourced their bulls from Coyote Flats Charolais. This close working relationship has proven beneficial for the cow/calf producer as well as Coyote Flats Charolais. The Lohues family is always interested in developing more of these relationships with producers that are purchasing bulls and would welcome any inquiries regarding providing calves for sale to the Coyote Flats Charolais feedlot and vaccination and health protocols for the cows and calves from these herds.

THE PERCENTAGE CALVING CHART 1. An average cow of any breed should be able to calve 7% of her body weight.

2. Most Charolais cows will weigh between 1400 and 1800 lb., with expected calf weight to range from 98 to 126 lb.

3. Most Red Angus cows will weigh between 1200 and 1600 lb., with expected calf weight to range from 84 to 112 lb.

4. Calving ease is MORE important than birth weight because a longer sided calf may calve easy, but the birth weight is higher.

BIRTH WEIGHT & CALVING EASE University studies in Wyoming and data from Montana and Colorado lend credence to the following conclusions: 1. The birth weight itself influences calving ease by 65%.

2. The female has 60-70% influence on birth weight of her calf.

3. The bull has 30-40% influence on birth weight of his progreny.

4. Pelvic measurement and angle as well as the shape of the calf have 35-40% influence on calving ease.

5. Length of gestation greatly affects birth weight. A fetus can gain over one pound per day in the last days of gestation.

6. Weather and temperature the last 30 days affect the length of gestation.

7. Size and maturity of the cow influence calving ease.

COWMAN FORMULA Increase in pounds per calf from a top performance bull X number of cows bred to him per year X number of years to keep the bull X expected selling price of calves = Additional dollars you can pay for a better bull

Example: A bull who will add 30 lb to the weaning weight of each of his calves, mated to 25 cows per year for 4 years, and you sell his calves for $1 per pound. 30 lb x 25 cows = 750 x 4 years = 3000 x $1/lb = $3000. This bull is worth $3000 more than the average bull who will keep your weaning weights the same. Take this formula and put your own figures in and see what you can afford to pay. This equation does not take into consideration the increase in value due to calving ease, higher quality replacement heifers, yearling growth, feedlot gain and improved carcass quality.
