Calf Wt. 1400-1800 lb., expected calf weight range 1200 lb. 84 lb. 98 to 126 lb. 1400 lb. 98 lb. 3. Once again, it is our pleasure to welcome you to the 2016 Cornerstone Bull Sale which could provide the genetics to be the cornerstone of any breeding program, whether you are a purebred or commercial breeder. The quality in both breeds this year is excellent with both proven and exciting lead time genetics being offered. The Charolais bulls again provide calving ease plus performance. The Brimner bulls are good haired, big volume bulls that will work at all levels of the industry. The WRAZ program is really reaching its stride with some excellent bulls from calving ease to performance to high maternal that will work for you. Red cows and white bulls have been the Cornerstone of the commercial industry for decades and will continue to be popular from the sale ring to the packing house. Using a quality bull is the first step to herd improvement and they are here in both breeds. Again this year, there is a good offering of open Red Angus and Red Angus X Charolais open replacement heifers that would be excellent additions to an existing operation or a great place to start a new herd. If Candace or I can be of any assistance before the sale or on sale day, please don’t hesitate to give us a call. We would be happy to help you find a bull that is right for your program. Sincerely, Helge & Candace By • By Livestock • Tel 306.584.7937 • Cell 306.536.4261

Welcome to the Annual Cornerstone Bull Sale 2016! First off, I would like to thank you for taking the time and interest in our bull sale. This year’s bull pen is as even as we have ever produced. Once again, the Bar J Trojan sons are a big part of the bull pen. Their built in calving ease, muscle and shape have been really popular in the past and these boys won’t disappoint! This is the first year for the Infusion sons and they are big topped and powerful with calving ease as well. These bulls are an athletic bunch ready to go to work and you can buy with confindence. Your past support is greatly appreciated! Always great to see repeat customers coming back – means we’re doing something right and gives us the confidence moving forward. Feel free to call or come to the farm to see them in their natural environment. Looking forward to seeing some old faces as well as meeting new ones. See you sale day! ~ Kelly

Cornerstone Bull & Female Sale

WRAZ RED ANGUS Welcome to the 8th Annual CORNERSTONE “More Bang for Your Buck” Bull & Female Sale. We sure do appreciate your time to have a look at our catalogue and the genetics we have put together for you this year. We would like to extend many thanks to all who have attended or taken the time to have a look and a special thank you to our past buyers for their confidence in using our genetics. Many of you have been repeat buyers and we feel very fortunate to have you back. Our goal is to fulfill your genetic needs as well as look after any needs that may arise after the sale so that you will for sure have a bull to cover your females no matter what situation may arise. We know there are plenty of bulls/choices out there and most sales are before this one so again THANK YOU! Everyone is invited to come on out to the Ranch 5 miles east of Wawota for a preview of this offering and their dams with their next calf at foot – really the whole program – on Saturday, April 2 anytime after 1:30 “til the cows come home”. Please come for a preview of the offering and a little WRAZ hospitality. These are exciting times in the cattle industry so enjoy it while you can. I know some of you are saying “Ya but the price is $200 a calf less than I got last year” but think back just a few more years or maybe even pull out an old cheque from the fall run of calves to remind yourself where we really are at today in the cattle industry. We are a lot closer to all-time highs than to all-time lows and we also have access to something we never had before in the cow-calf, feeder and fat market with what I would like to call the cover your ass insurance program (WLPIP). Is it perfect – not likely but it’s a heck of a lot better than nothing which is what we had before.I also have to say my hat is off to the SSGA for their part in their lobbying efforts in the interests of fellow livestock producers. The behind the scenes actions of these grass roots associations carry a big stick with respect to getting things done like insurance programs and landowner rights when dealing with the government. I also have to say I really appreciate the speaker they brought out to spread the word about the fact that McDonalds all across Canada is using Canadian beef from two Canadian plants and the patties are all made at one Canadian plant. The McDonald’s verified beef program is very interesting if you have not heard about it. I guess my point here is that the beef industry in my eyes – for what that is worth – looks pretty darn good! There is no better investment for your bottom line than the “The program best herd sire you can afford for the goals you are trying to you can count on” reach in your own operation so do your homework. I am Phil & Lana Birnie & Family pretty much always a phone call or a text away if I can Box 461, Wawota, SK S0G 5A0 help in any way I would appreciate the opportunity to chat T 306-739-2988 • C 306-577-7440 with you. I could speak volumes about this excellent Herdsire but I will do this in point form to keep it short. I will say that he is the most influential sire we have used and he will definitely leave his mark here and in other programs across the globe. His progeny have been well accepted both male and female. • Daughters are now milking and they are excellent uddered with plenty of milk. • Progeny are very good footed and structurally correct. • Progeny are well above average at feed conversion and flesh very easily. • Progeny have a great hair coat • Progeny are born easily with excellent birth to wean growth • Progeny are thick and full of muscle and red meat • He has the ability to add a little frame yet keep progeny stout and easy fleshing

Many thanks to Cam & Carla for their confidence in our program and to Rick Rohrich, from Steele, ND, who was runner up bidder that day (special thanks to TRCC, Ron, Ed and Ryan Clemetson for making the trip up to attend our sale and carrying that bid – greatly appreciated!). All reports are that he is still looking great and he has done his job breeding as well as calving on their heifers. Don’t be afraid to go check out the good set of bred heifers that Cam & Carla have on offer at the ranch every fall – many this past fall carried his service. Ghost Rider 95C entered this world at 74 lb. and never looked back (very consistent with his full brother last year at 73 lb.). 95C has a very nice spread from 74 lb. at birth to 834 Oct 12 to 1174 Feb 8. SALE FEATURE BY GHOST RIDER 108Y! What a tremendous job Ghost Rider has done for our program. A big thank you to my good friend Bryan Mackenzie for these great genetics! We are very pleased with his many daughters now proven in their milking ability and sons proving their value as breeders. This guy has been a standout for quite some time and he would have been in our Agribition pen of bulls had it not been for an injury last August that set him back. After carefully watching him all winter right in the middle of the pack during all the riding that went on in the main bull pen, I am confident that he is now physically and structurally sound for breeding. This guy will have the calving ease required for the heifer pen along with the performance and power you would expect from a higher BW cow bull. Excellerator 54C is a standout in my mind with a tremendous hair coat along with all the pieces to the puzzle of a great herdsire in the making including his dam from the Christy cow family by Tycoon 2T – a bull I sure wish we would have collected and a Black Red Gene Carrier granddam that goes back to the great black sire Fortune 425C. 75T is still here and going strong as well. Excellerator 54C is at the very top of my list of favourite bulls in the offering. This is a bull we would like to use in our program. Please do not hesitate to call Phil at 306-577-7440 with your ideas on how this could benefit your program and ours! Perhaps you calve at a different time of year than we do. FEATURE GHOST RIDER POWER BULL! This could be the most powerful son of Ghost Rider we have produced to date. He was our heaviest of all the bull calves on Oct. 12 at 940 lb. followed by a Feb 8 weight of 1247 lb. - still the heaviest! I appreciate a bull that has the kind of growth this fella has – he was steady from birth right up until the last weigh date on Feb 8. There are plenty of bulls out there that grow at times throughout their life but the vast majority of them cannot keep it up – they either do it from birth to wean and then stop or they idle along with adequate growth and then explode when they get on feed. This guy is unique in his growth pattern which would be very desirable to breed into the herd. I have yet to mention that the structural correctness of Crusader 48C is right at the top of what we have ever produced here as well. The foot and leg structure is very good on this guy! His young dam, 265X is proving to be an excellent producer – her first daughter 34Z is working in our herd (her first calf was a bull that sold in the bull sale, second calf was a female selected for the Masterpiece Agribition sale and sold to the Hunt family - T&S Red Angus). She also produced one of the top young open heifers in our annual bull sale last spring selling for $5250 to Murray & Karen Crawford and family, Ramblin Rose Stock Farm. We would like to use this guy in our herd in some way as well, so do not hesitate to give Phil a call 306-577-7440 with any ideas you may have – I am open to suggestions! This Ghost Rider son is a twin that was raised alone on his natural dam. Using birthweight as your guide of calving ease especially in a twin is not usually a wise decision. This guy has a birthweight of 78 lb., which as a twin I would usually caution you against using on heifers but I believe this guy to be an exception to the rule. The female side of this pedigree is strong in calving ease so I will say this guy would be acceptable on heifers. Icecap 19W has produced three maternal brothers to this guy and they have all made the cut and sold through our bull sale. The Squire 334N bull left behind some great females and Granddam 24N was a beautiful top end female in the herd until we had the misfortune of losing her. He had a little more birth weight but I will give you a few very good reasons why it is not a worry. He is well under 7% of her body weight, there are other Ghost Rider sons successfully calving on heifers and the length of body he possesses will maintain that all important calving ease and give you more weight across the scale in the fall where it helps your bottom line. Hitch 36C is backed by a very good, strong cow family – his dam Annie Irene 120X is a very good producing, long bodied, well put together, moderate framed female. Granddam Annie Irene 10U has a top end bull in the offering, another son at KW Heaton Farms and a high selling son by Makn’Waves working for Dave & Tracee Vikse of Vikse Family Farm near Donalda, AB. Granddam Irene 36E was an ET donor for Fabulous Females that had 12 registered progeny.

Here is a heifer bull that will add a little frame while still maintaining consistent calving ease from his many times proven sire Hitch 23X. Strong maternal traits here as well when he gets too big for the heifer pasture he can graduate to cows and make you some very useful females. Dam Duchess 48Y comes out of a black red carrier female if you are in need of a little change up in pedigree. Hitch 80C has a pretty respectable Oct 12 weight of 728 for starting out at 78 lb. What a proven track record there is behind this Hitch 23X son through his dam. His dam, 23U was originally purchased out of the mighty Red Round Up sale in Red Deer, AB, and has been here on lease ever since - currently owned by Gordon Murray. The consignments from this well respected long time sale are from the top of each consigner’s program and this female has proven herself well. Her first son, BUCC 5X was our high seller to Emmatt Creek Ranch and then a couple years later to Hamco Cattle Co., near Glenboro, MB – watch for their upcoming sale for sons. The BUCC 5X daughters I have seen are phenomenal. The next son 32A went to Shawn Tessier, of Broken T Ranch, near Weyburn – watch for Dam: SBB 23U sons in their upcoming Equinox Bull Sale. Maternal sister 54B was the high selling open female last year to Baxter Blair/Blair Ag – thank you so much to the Blair family for your confidence in our program! Now this guy has a little different twist being by our proven calving ease sire Hitch 23X but with the same great female behind him. You will get a ton of calving ease for your heifer pen and even the females off those heifers will be worthy replacements. Then when he gets too big to breed heifers he will still be an outstanding sire in the cow pasture to produce some of the best females you will find anywhere. We did not get a video but he certainly is worthy of one.

RED WRAZ HITCH 123C

Hitch 123C is extremely strong in maternal bloodlines and the calving ease is bred in on both sides of this fella’s pedigree. Granddam 438N had 11 progeny before we parted with her last fall. Kodiak 3A is a bull that I was interested in from the moment I saw him at Bryan Mackenzie’s bull sale in Fort Macleod. He sold that day to Darren Vancuren of Sunberry Valley Farm for $58000. I was one of the first in line to buy a semen package on him to incorporate the calving ease of the well accepted Kodiak blood line into our heifer pen. The calving ease has been excellent and his progeny have exceeded all of our expectations including females that will make you take a second look. I liked him so much that I recently made the investment to own a 50% interest in the bull himself and he will be breeding heifers for us in 2016.

Gerry Walter, WCF Red Angus and I purchased this bull together from the Crowfoot dispersal. His sire was the talk of the dispersal sale and sold to Genex and Oly Farms if I remember correctly for $68000 – unfortunately he met his death not long after that. We used this direct son Moonshine 3084A as a yearling and then he went to Ontario to breed for WCF so we only have a few progeny for the next couple of years as the trip is long to Ontario so Gerry will use him there until he is done with him. He has left us some very stout made dark hided offspring that are very interesting to say the least. His young females are well above average in udder development for their age and the calving ease appears to be very good for the limited use we have had with him. Give Gerry Walter a call if you need a second opinion.

FEATURE RED KODIAK 3A SON! If you are looking for a heifer bull with a little more frame and jam behind him you may want to have a look at this guy. He has a little more birth at 82 lb. than is typical of the Kodiak 3A line but our Serebl cow family is known for long bodied high growth cattle. I am far more inclined to check out the dam’s weight and check whether or not the calf’s birth weight is plus or minus 7% of her weight than to get all hung up on birth weight! The Serebl cow family is one of our best cow families in terms of production potential but they are not small framed. Granddam 95N is a powerful daughter of Sensation 702E that we have flushed very successfully and typically has progeny that are less than 7% of her weight. Although this fella’s dam Serebl 146A weighed 102 lb at birth, she was still well under 7% (1650 @ 7% = 115). Serebl 146A was selected for the Masterpiece sale at Agribition as a heifer calf a couple years back and sold to Callaway Cattle Co. Dave put her back here on lease with us and this is her first calf on offer. Kodiak 66C has a little more frame and he will work in the heifer pen but he also has enough growth in him for the cow pen in the future as he will mature into a big lad! The strength in this cow family also presented itself this past fall when a full sister to his dam, 104B, was selected as a bred heifer for Red Round Up 2015 and when the smoke cleared the winning bid was $10,000 and the proud new owner was Cheramie Viator of Texas! Those of you who have been asking if I will have any higher birth weight cow bulls with lots of growth, here is one that will bring you in some extra pay weight in the fall. The female side of this fella is pretty attractive as well if you keep back some females for breeding. Proven female makers Typhoon and Indeed are behind this big boy and you will be very pleased with the females he leaves behind. Although he has a birth weight of 110 lb., do not be afraid of this good bull. He was 10 days old before this guy found the time to weigh him but that is what he weighed that day so that is what I put down. He likely should have been closer to 100 and look at his Oct 12 weight of 742 lb. Last I checked, we are still being paid by the pound!

Swayze 43C is genetically very maternally bred. Hobo 1961 daughters are known for their maternal strength and our Swayze sire is showing he is very likely going to be remembered for his females as well. Swayze 43C is another great candidate for the heifer pen that will still be an asset in the cow pasture for producing females if he gets too big for the heifer pen.

One of the few Swayze sons in the sale, not because we didn’t want a bunch of them, but simply because of breeding circumstances beyond our control (we just nicely had Swayze 33Z out breeding and I had to pull him to send to a customer to replace a bull we had sold in the sale but had come down with a bad case of hardware disease and had to be euthanized). This guy is an attractive dark red, moderate but very well put together son of Swayze 33Z. Our sale partners Kelly & Tracy and family, of Brimner Cattle Co., are using a maternal brother to this guy in their heifer pen and that is where Swayze 64C would be best suited as well. This guy comes to us from an in dam purchase from Scott & Tina Fettes, DKF Red Angus, through the Touch of Class sale held each December in Sasktatoon. He is a complete outcross to anything we have had in the sale to date. He is an early maturing meat machine with a tremendous amount of muscle expression. He will add shape and muscle to his progeny.

Here is a heifer’s first calf from a female I purchased as one of the high selling females at the Blake’s Red Angus Fantastic Females Sale in Moose Jaw. Shane thought a lot of her and she did a nice job on this guy with her first attempt.
