The future of the Charolais breed in Canada is in your hands Seems like a bold statement to start an editorial but it is the truth. Each and every breeder in Canada is responsible for their part in developing, promoting and expanding the Charolais breed in this country. Are you doing your part? Are you a breeder or a multiplier? Are you a promoter or a taker? Think to yourself about what role you are playing in the Charolais breed. Is there more you can do?

The Association and other breeders cannot be responsible for the growth of the breed. Each and every member must step up and challenge the industry as to our place in the beef chain. Frankly, I don’t think our associations at either the National or Provincial levels have been challenging themselves to take the leadership role required. Some of the other breeds have been way more aggressive in their pursuit of mentoring their younger members, chasing the genetic advancements and promoting the facts and being a face in the industry than we have. Me included, I must do more and we all must do our part and continue to do more.

This fall we are going to see some long faces coming out of the auction markets as some of the commercial producers who have not been keeping up on the performance end of the genetics or using the convenience (calving ease) genetics, get their butts kicked with the lighter calves.

This is our time to shine. We can show the industry what being the terminal sire of choice means and how it can reflect in dollars in their pockets. If they can’t see this fall that pounds pay, they never will.

Please move out of your comfort zones and get out and do some promoting at your local and regional level to help expand the interest and market of the breed. Help some youth in your area feel more welcome to the Charolais breed and encourage more of the younger generation to want to participate in the livestock industry and hopefully use Charolais genetics in the process. Try to attend at least some of the Charolais sales or shows and don’t be afraid to add a better female to your operation in support of the breeders who are out there trying to promote and better the breed.

Being a successful marketer is highly correlated to a positive attitude and there are things that you can do to contribute to this. One of the most important is to avoid people with contagious negative attitudes. If there are people you associate with that are always negative and bring you down with them – avoid them. There are more than enough people out there that don’t see the glass half empty that you can spend time with. It doesn’t cost any more to be positive, so why be negative. People want to be around people that are positive, so be one of them. Keeping a positive attitude isn’t that hard. You just have to choose to be positive. Every minute of every day you make choices. Just keep making the right choices and your attitude will follow.

Next spring the bull sales are going to be tougher for some breeds. I don’t believe we will feel the down trend as much as we pick up market share from those realizing that you have to crossbreed and add pounds to the calf crop to survive. Let’s all do our part to sell the message and make sure we increase our presence in the industry.

Marketing tip of the month: When you go somewhere don’t always visit with the same producers that you see

all the time. Reach out and meet some new people. It always struck me funny to go to let’s say Denver Stock Show and see other Canadians who drove down together spend the whole time there together. They would have another 15 hours in the car ride home to catch up on everything they saw, who they met and what they learned.

Why did they seem joined at the hip for the three days they were there also? You don’t have to go to Denver to see this. I see it all the time at events around the country. Reach out and meet some new potential customers or get to know some of your existing customers better. We have been challenging people to tour ten herds a year, maybe you need to make a challenge between a few breeders you normally hang out with.

At the next show or event, see how many different commercial breeders and purebred breeders each of you can talk to. No matter who wins the competition, your business will win with increased interest in your program.

In the Fall Connection, you will have seen the list of members and the number of cows enrolled. As we were doing it, we noticed that some of your membership information needs to be updated. If you don’t like how your first names, or lack of, reads, then update your information with the CCA please. It is good to have all your information as accurate as possible, including updating your email addresses as well.

As you read this, we are heading into the fall show and sale season and I look forward to visiting with as many of you as possible.

If we have never met, please come up and introduce yourself. I would like to meet every breeder in Canada if possible.

L’avenir de la race Charolaise est entre vos mains. Peut-être trouverez-vous ma déclaration audacieuse pour commencer mon éditorial, mais c’est la vérité. Chaque éleveur au Canada est responsable du rôle qu’il a à jouer dans son développement, sa promotion et l’expansion de la race dans ce pays. Est-ce que vous faites votre part? Êtes- vous un éleveur ou un multiplicateur? Êtes-vous un promoteur ou un éleveur? Pensez au rôle que vous joué dans la race charolaise.

Pourriez-vous en faire plus?

L’Association et les autres éleveurs ne peuvent pas être responsables seul de la croissance de la race. Chaque membre doit intensifier ses actions, et contester l’industrie quant à la place qui nous revient dans la chaîne de la viande bovine. Franchement, je ne pense pas que nos associations au niveau National et provincial ont pu assumer leurs rôles de leadership nécessaire. Certaines autres races ont été beaucoup plus agressives dans leur quête de mentorat pour leurs plus jeunes membres, chassant nos progrès génétiques et la promotion de notre race dans l’industrie. Moi le premier je dois en faire plus et continuer de plus en plus à en faire d’avantage.

Cet automne certains auront le visage long aux ventes de veaux d’embouche, ceux qui n’ont pas tenu compte de la performance et de la génétique pour aller vers la facilité de vêlage, c’est là que nous allons leur botter les fesses avec leurs veaux plus légers. Ce sera le temps de jubiler.

Nous pourrons montrer à l’industrie qui est le père du terminal et qui se reflétera, en mettent plus d’argent dans les poches des producteurs. Si elle ne peut pas voir cet automne les

livres en plus, elle ne le verra jamais.

S’il vous plait sortez de votre zone de confort et faites un peu de promotion au niveau local et régional pour aider à élargir l’intérêt et la marché de la race. Aidez certains jeunes dans votre région pour qu’ils se sentent les bienvenus dans la race charolaise, et encouragés la jeune génération dans l’industrie bovine, et à utiliser la race charolaise.

Essayer d’assister et de participer dans les ventes de la race et dans les expositions, afin d’ajouter une meilleure femelle dans votre opération et d’appuyer les éleveurs qui tentent de promouvoir de leur mieux la race. Être un bon agent de commercialisation et avoir une attitude positive, ce sont des choses pour y contribuer. La chose la plus importante à éviter c’est que des personnes avec des attitudes négatives deviennent contagieuses.

S’il y a des gens que vous associez au négatif, les éviter le plus possible, il n’y a pas assez de gens qui voit le verre à moitié plein au lieu de le voir à moitié vide. Il ne coûte pas plus cher d’être positif, alors pourquoi être négatif. Les gens préfèrent côtoyer des gens positifs. Garder une attitude positive n’est pas si difficile. Vous avez juste à choisir d’être positif il suffit de continuer à faire de bons choix et votre attitude suivra.

Au printemps les ventes de taureaux seront plus difficiles pour certaines races. Je ne crois pas que nous allons sentir cette tendance, en autant qu’on continue à prendre part au marché et que nous croyons à la valeur du veau pour survivre. Faisons notre part pour vendre le message, et assurons-nous d’augmenter notre présence dans l’industrie.

Et pour le slogan en marketing du mois… quand vous allez quelque part pour des visites, ne visitez pas

toujours les mêmes éleveurs, serrez des mains et rencontrez de nouveaux producteurs.

Ce qui m’a toujours frappé dans les visites, exemple : Denver Stock Show c’est de voir des canadiens passer tout leur temps ensemble, et ne jamais se séparer pour rencontrer d’autres gens, pourtant ils seront 15 heures ensemble pour voyager dans l’auto. Ils n’ont pas besoin de raconter ce qu’ils ont vu ils y étaient tous. Vous n’êtes pas obligé d’aller à Denver pour voir ça.

Je vois ça à chaque évènement à travers le pays. Serrez la main pour rencontrer de nouveaux clients potentiels ou apprendre à connaître certains de vos clients. C’est difficile de visiter dix troupeaux par année mais lancez-vous le défi d’en visiter de nouveaux. À la prochaine exposition ou évènement voyez à combien d’éleveurs commerciaux ou pur-sang vous pouvez parler. Peu importe qui gagne la compétition, votre entreprise y gagnera sûrement, et un intérêt sera de plus en plus probable pour votre entreprise.

Dans le numéro d’automne du Connection vous trouverez la liste des membres et le nombre de vaches inscrites. Comme à chaque année vos informations d’adhésion seront mise à jour. Il est bon d’avoir toutes vos informations aussi précises que possible y compris la mise à jour de vos adresses e-mail.

Quand vous lirez ces lignes les expositions et les ventes d’automne seront débutées, et j’espère en visiter le plus grand nombre. Si nous nous sommes jamais rencontré s’il vous plait venez- vous présenter. Je voudrais rencontrer chaque éleveur au Canada si possible. À la prochaine, Helge

A joint collaboration of the Beef Cattle Research Council (BCRC), Canada Beef, the Canadian Beef Breeds Council (CBBC) and the Canadian Cattlemen’s Association (CCA), held the inaugural Canadian Beef Industry Conference (CBIC) August 9-11, 2016 in Calgary, AB. The conference was a resounding success, exceeding expectations while hosting over 650 participants representing producers, industry representatives and youth.

CBIC was a national meeting place to bring together all facets from the grass routes through to all parts of the supply chain of the Canadian beef industry.

Networking, brainstorming, sharing knowledge and ideas on how to move the industry forward was contagious. The impact of the industry meeting expanded much beyond the walls of the convention, the hashtag #CBIC2016 became a top trending Twitter topic in Canada.

Keynote speakers addressed connectivity, productivity, beef demand and competitiveness, the four pillars of the National Beef Strategy and covered a wide range of developments, issues and hot topics.

“We couldn’t have asked for a better first time experience delivering this new national conference for Canada’s beef and cattle industry,” says Rob Smith, Canadian Angus Association Chief Executive Officer and co-chair of the conference. “The theme was ‘Putting It Together…’ and that’s exactly what happened. The response has been absolutely amazing. It bodes well for making this an annual event and that’s

what we’re talking about now.” The CBIC will be back in Calgary, AB for 2017 and it’s going to be an event you don’t want to miss out on, specific dates and location information to come.

If you were a previous user of the online system and haven’t done so already, you must request a new password from the CCA Office. Une collaboration conjointe entre le Conseil de recherche de bovins de boucherie (BCRC), Bœuf du Canada, le Conseil canadien des races de boucherie (CBBC) et l’Association Canadienne des producteurs de bœuf (CCA), qui s’est tenue la première Conférence canadienne de l’industrie bœuf (CBIC) du 9 au 11 à Calgary, en Alberta. La Conférence a été un franc succès, dépassant les attentes en accueillant plus de 650 participants représentant les producteurs, les représentants de l’industrie et la relève.

CBIC était un lieu de rencontre nationale pour réunir toutes les facettes de la chaine de production et mise en marche du bœuf ; des éleveurs primaires jusqu’aux détaillants de viande. Le réseautage, les remue-méninges, le partage des connaissances et des idées sur la façon d’avancer l’industrie étaient contagieuses.

L’impact de la rencontre de l’industrie étendu bien au-delà des murs de la convention, l’hashtag #CBIC2016 est devenu un sujet de haute tendance sur Twitter au Canada. Les conférenciers d’honneur ont adressé la connectivité, la productivité, la demande pour le bœuf et la compétitivité, les quatre piliers de la stratégie nationale de la viande bovine et couvrent une large gamme de développements, de questions et de sujets d’actualité.

Amélioration du système d’enregistrement Le système d’enregistrement de l’ACC a été mis à jour. Malheureusement, en raison de la mise à jour les mots de passe précédents ne sont pas transférables. Si vous étiez un utilisateur précédent du système en ligne et que vous ne l’avez pas déjà fait, vous devez demander un nouveau mot de passe en contactant l’association. Une fois connecté, la fonctionnalité demeure le même mais, il sera un peu différent ! Nous apprécions votre patience car nous sommes tous les familiarisons avec les changements !

Soumission des poids de sevrage avant le 31 octobre 2016 Faites-nous parvenir vos données sevrage aussitôt que possible pour vous assurer qu’elles soient incluses lors de la prochaine ronde d’EPD. Il est important pour les éleveurs pur-sang de contribuer vos données de performances.

Les données de performance sont impératives pour l’entretien d’évaluations précises de la race pour assurer des améliorations positives.

Getting Cattle Insurance?

Cattle insurance is no different really than auto or house insurance, we get it because we cannot afford the loss should we loose the animal whether by death or its reproductive ability compromised.

Many livestock insurance policies are initiated at high end purebred sales.

At the fall of the gavel the animal is deemed healthy.

If insuring other than directly after an auction sale you will have to justify to the insurer that the animal is similar to what it is worth at public auction. This would apply to pet animals, show animals etc. Just because you think it is worth X amount, they need to see some reasonable justification you could get near that at public auction. Policies on bulls cover just death or death and breeding ability on them. To process the claim a bull must permanently be a non-breeder because of either sickness accident or disease.

When deciding to buy and insure make sure and examine the animal closely especially in regards to auctioned animals. Any blemish, problem, conformational, hereditary or semen issue that was previously present will not be covered by the new policy. Examine breeding bulls breeding certificate closely prior to purchase as insurers will not cover bulls that have failed or in some cases barely passed their semen evaluations.

They might insure them for death in the meantime in cases where bulls were too young or they are waiting for the semen evaluation.

Claims when they are made have to be justified. In the case of death an autopsy done or in other cases a clinical exam performed by a licensed veterinarian. The claims must fall into the category of sickness, accident (injury) or disease. There are several conditions which could fall back to the original breeder such as hereditary defects, the inability to breed or lack 16

of libido in the case of bulls. Testicular degeneration is most definitely a grey zone. Many cases are caused by injury to the testicles or concurrent disease but others are spontaneous. Each cause may have a different outcome as far as the insurance company is concerned. Always advise insurance companies of any health or injury issues which happen during the policy period. In regards to breeding bulls have a semen evaluation preformed before the expiration date of the policy to detect problems which may have cropped up.

Many misunderstandings occur regarding bull fertility. A veterinarian might fail but in the insurance company’s eyes if he could still sire calves he is deemed a breeder and they may overrule the semen certificate. For example a vet might fail a bull with only one functioning testicle and the other is degenerated or injured scarred even though the semen motility morphology and density may be good. In the insurance companies eyes he can still sire calves so they would not pay out in this example. We probably have too high an expectation on yearling bulls.

Fifteen to twenty cows is plenty for a yearling bull. If exposed to cows in too large a pasture with too much competition weight loss and potential injury are much higher.

Insurance companies also have to watch the due diligence of the producer. If an insured animal had an ailment which was ignored (especially if treatment could have been successful) a claim could be rejected.

An example is a lame cow with foot rot that was ignored and became a septic arthritis. Surgery could be done in this example and this is where notifying the company when issues first happen and keeping lines of communication open is paramount.

Vaccination history is also noted. It is a shame when highly valued animals have not been vaccinated with for instance blackleg and then die needlessly of a highly preventable Charolais Banner • October 2016

disease. Co-mingling of bulls can lead to problems and the best advice is leave as much space as possible when reintroducing bulls.

Just like other insurance policies different clauses can be put on. A clause for loss of use during the breeding season so if a bull goes down with a cut penis and misses that breeding season he has lost one breeding season and the payout would be a percentage of the cost of the bull. Adding clauses can increase the premium cost. With certain farm policies commercial cattle can be insured for acts of god such as drowning in floods or loss from lightning. You can usually set a high deductible that keeps the premiums lower.

As with any dealings always keep the lines of communications and report or have your veterinarian report any sickness or treatments that are done on an insured animal.

They’re apt to be much more cooperative if they know you have been treating a condition that has now gone south than find out two days before the policy has expired. Never ship or destroy an Insured animal without the company’s permission unless your Veterinarian does it for humane reasons. Identification should for sure include the verified tattoo but have your veterinarian use the RFID and dangle tags as well as any other identification such as colour or brands.

Insurance companies will pay the rock solid claims. As an industry if they started paying all the unnecessary claims with time all premiums would go up. Right now the basic death and breeding premiums are around 10% of the value of the animal plus a ten percent deductible because claims are rather high. Most of my clients insure animals the first year they own them which is when breeding injuries and sickness occur. The odds drop down as the animal matures.

Broken Box Ranch Jerry Maltby was raised on a purebred Hereford ranch sixty miles north of Sacramento, near Williams, California. The industry was selecting for smaller framed cattle and Jerry’s father just didn’t want to go that direction. They couldn’t give bulls away. At the time, Jerry was just leaving home to attend California State University, in Chico, where he picked up a brochure on Charolais.

It intrigued him enough to go to Phoenix, home of one of the top five shows in the nation at the time.

There were 100 head of Charolais on display and he bought a heifer in the sale, as there were no bulls in the offering.

They were able to find one bull for sale and the only reason he was available was because he had foot rot earlier. They paid $800 for that bull and ventured out in a station wagon with a U-Haul wagon with a tarp on top to bring him home. “All the way home, people would drive by and point and laugh. We stopped a couple of times to see what was wrong, but never saw a thing. We stopped for gas and when we came out of the station, there was the bull with his head poked through the top of the tarp looking around. He must have been enjoying the scenery the entire time, it was quite a sight,” Jerry laughs. “We were so lucky that bull was so quiet.”

“That bull bred all of the Hereford

cows and when we weaned his first calf crop, they gained 150 plus pounds over the Hereford weaning weights.” That was when Jerry became a believer in Charolais and in crossbreeding. He set a goal to produce seedstock bulls for the commercial industry that were easy calving with rapid growth and would sire top quality carcasses.

He went back to the sale in Phoenix the next year and bought two more heifers. They started with some Charbrays, but in 1963 were able to purchase some Charolais cows.

He built his herd up until the trend towards taller, leaner cattle in the late seventies and early eighties. “They

just got too big for us,” he says. They dispersed their Charolais and started an all-breeds bull test center in Oakdale in 1978. He couldn’t stay away from Charolais for long and started building a Charolais herd again in the mid nineties and returned to Williams. “The goals have remained the same, first and foremost is calving ease. Second is their offspring’s performance: weaning, yearling and ultrasound data on ribeye, back fat and marbling while maintaining a moderate frame size and proper structure.”

They sell bulls at twelve to eighteen months of age to mostly repeat buyers. “It is great to sell a

He said he sorted off 42 of them and he got three cents per pound less for the Charcross, but he got $135 per head more. So I asked him how that cheque worked for him,” Jerry remembers.

Broken Box sells between six and ten bulls every year at the Red Bluff Bull Sale at the end of January and another four are taken to a bull sale put on by the Nevada Cattlemen’s Association in Fallon in mid February.

The rest are sold off the farm.

Jerry and Sherry are not strangers to Canada either having been up here a number of times. He was a volume buyer at the Merit Dispersal sale in 2009 and his purchases included the dam of Merit Roundup. They were also up for the World Charolais

They now have 200 breeding females and a feedlot in an area that is quickly changing to irrigated rice, tomatoes, almonds and walnuts, to

name a few. Land in the proximity of the Sacramento river is irrigated for crops we don’t see here. Acres and acres of tomatoes are grown to fill the world’s largest tomato paste processing plant. Maltby’s have ventured into organic rice and grow short or medium grain rice. This year there were few contracts for organic rice due to overproduction last year, so some of their land was seeded to Italian rye for the cattle. They are hoping to seed back to organic rice next season.

Broken Box also fills a need with their conventional and organic rice straw. Colusa County is the number 1 rice county in the U.S. as far as production and California will raise nearly 600,000 acres of rice. They also custom bale rice straw that is used as forage base for the feedlot and Jerry feeds it to his purebreds while on both dryland and irrigated pastures. “It has continued on page 24

decent TDN but little protein” so he supplements protein with a special mix. On irrigated pasture, he can increase carry capacity by 10%.

They also sell rice straw to beef and dairy producers, and also market it for erosion control, bedding and construction purposes.

The National Resource Conservation Service has funded a project to water cattle through underground pipe, which allows them to divide pastures into smaller paddocks for grass management and keep the cattle out of the creek.

Flood irrigated pasture will dry up in four days on the adobe soil in the area. Some of their land is situated in a fly-way and many people come from all over to hunt or photograph the birds. Pheasants and ducks nest in the area.

Living in the proximity of such a variety of crops provides feeding options not available to everyone.

Jerry has fed sixty different kinds of by-products in his feedlot: tomato waste, tomato pumice, almond hulls, rice straw, prune pumice, grain screanings, cull nectarines, cull peaches, rice cakes, sunflower seeds, cotton seed, olive pumice, prune paste, rice bran, pumpkin seed, cake mixes, bakery by products, sugar snap peas, beet seed, etc. They all go into the mixer and a balanced ration is prepared.

“Occasionally we will get some tomato waste dumped and if the cattle walk through it, they get all red and look awful for a couple of days.”

there is no packing plant close and it is cheaper to ship lighter cattle the distance and finish them closer. Fattened cattle have to go to Pascal, Washington or Utah for slaughter. Many are finished in Nebraska or Oregon. The cattle are sometimes sold by video. Broken Box Ranch doesn’t market for clients, they just get them through the background stage so clients are able to market them.

“This year we fed a lot of cows because so many people ran out of grass with the drought and they had no place to go.” “Sometimes we are a stopping point to preg check and sort

females so they can be divided to ship to various locations. Sometimes we also feed cull cows to prepare them for shipping. The cows do well on the cheap by-products, whereas finishing young cattle would not work as well.”

The feedlot holds around 2500 during the winter or 3500 light cattle.

The diversity of opportunities is broad for those willing to take advantage. The Maltbys have a chicken litter composte on their land.

The company that rents it has a contract to clean chicken barns in the area. He mixes them with rice hulls. It gets turned three times before it is sold as compost.

Sherry Maltby is very involved in the operation and the community. She serves as the Glenn-Colusa Cattlewomen President and is the Bylaws Chair of the State Cattlewomen’s Association. The State Association meets three time each year and the local organization meets five times per year. Their main focus is Ag In the Classroom and Beef Promotion. Their meetings have included topics to assist the members in estate planning, social media, how to do an interview, worker’s compensation guidelines, etc.

She is also a member of the Garden Club and competes in its annual horticulture show. “I never knew I was a competitive person until I saw that first blue ribbon on my entry,” Sherry laughs.

Cattlemen’s Association and a director on the California Cattlemen’s Association. The State association is making a Foothills Abortion Vaccine to protect cows from abortions due to tick bites. They sell it as a fundraiser to fund their programs. He is also the local Republican Committee Chairman, was on the bank board, California Republican Party Board, California Beef Improvement Board, Family Water Alliance board for many years and the American International Charolais Association board of directors for two years.

Nicholas Livestock Company Nicoli Nicholas Sr. has been breeding Charolais since 1959. He and Nicoli Nicholas Jr. have 1500 head including calves and bulls. This year they are breeding 110 replacement heifers.

The sustainability of their program is based on their commercial bull market and for years their focus has been calving ease because without a live calf, you have nothing. After that, they let the bulls speak for themselves through the performance of their progeny.

Their first Charolais were descendents from imports to Mexico in the 1930s. By 1959, most of the ones in the United States were domestic purebreds bred up from British or Brahman based cows.

Enthused by his early success in breeding Charolais cattle, Nicoli dedicated himself to the promotion and advancement of the breed in local, regional, and national efforts.

Nicoli served two terms as an at-large director of the AICA, and also as its treasurer and secretary.

His AICA committee assignments included: Executive, Finance (Chairman), Artificial Insemination (Chairman), Charbray (Chairman), Convention and Building Commercial (Chairman), Promotion (Chairman), Breed Improvement (Chairman) and Foreign Marketing (Chairman). As the Promotion Committee chairman, Nicoli changed the emphasis of owning Charolais breeding stock purely as an investment (in order to take income tax deductions) to one emphasizing the benefits of using Charolais in a commercial cattle enterprise.

❝At the time, we did not have the benefit of DNA tests, so my solution was to test via matings to reach 99% + probabilities…❞ “In 1963, the Charolais breed association petitioned the USDA for permission to import semen from France to broaden the gene pool. A protocol was established and the association was in the process of gathering funds to finance the project when the Canadian government announced that it would issue permits for live imports into Canada. That move effectively ended the U.S. program and American breeders flocked to Canada in search of new blood. My wife, Barbara and I were among the Americans that were in Quebec when the first importation off loaded. Regrettably as it turned out, I was on assignment as the representative of the Western Charolais Association (WCA) to execute a contract for the purchase of a 1/4 semen interest in a bull for $40,000. The Canadian program turned out to be a mixed blessing because, while some very good animals were imported, there were others that were walking disasters!

One such disaster was the bull the WCA purchased who was widely used within the western United States and because of the calving difficulties associated with that bull and others

like him, the Charolais breed garnered a reputation for calving problems that persisted for many years.

Notwithstanding the fact that there were severe problems associated with some of the imports, it was also obvious that benefits could be had from the judicious use of the better ones.”

“Of particular interest to me was the controversy relative to AI between our respective breed associations. I was the Charmian of the AICA AI committee. We had factions here that were at odds. Some wanted restricted AI and others wanted unrestricted. I was caught in the middle. Foremost in my mind, however, was how to deal with issues of deleterious recessive genes. I was already aware of double muscling (from the work with my mentor in genetics at UC Davis, Wade C. Rollins) and from my personal experience with dometstic Charolais of Mexican origin. And the palatepastern (arthrogryposis) had appeared. At the time, we did not have the benefit of DNA tests, so my solution was to test via matings to reach 99% + probabilities (e.g. 35 siredaughter matings or matings with known carrier cows.” For eight consecutive years, beginning in 1966,

Nicoli Sr. tested and evaluated more than forty-five imported bulls and finally identified two he wanted to build from.

The first of these, Bayard FMC 67, was from a dam (Racine) that was unique for a French cow as she was a heavy milk producer. Nicoli Sr. obtained a semen interest in Bayard in 1967. The other was Eclair FMC 426 and he distinguished himself by being one of the highest rated bulls ever tested on the Canadian Conception to Consumer program. Nicoli Sr. purchased Eclair in 1974 from Ken and Doris Bargholz, in Alberta, who had imported him from France in 1970.

“We concentrated the breeding in our herd using these two bulls and their sons on all of our cows. In order to assure the relationships to the two bulls could continue through successive generations, we set about identifying one individual as the focal point for a linebreeding program.”

“Ordinarily, that individual would have been an outstanding bull.

However, as it turned out, we identified a female instead. That cow, NGN Miss Bayard Eclair 265/81, bore a striking resemblance to Racine and traced back several times to Bayard, as well as to Eclair and several of the better Fullblood bulls from Mexico.

We called her Little Cow. She died in 2003 at nearly twenty-two years of age and lived a very productive life.

Today more than 95% of our herd has descended from Little Cow and thousands more of her descendants are born each year in our customers’ commercial herds.”

There are thousands of acres of almonds grown in this valley

selected outcross bulls to breed a few of our progeny-proven females. From these matings we choose the best females to breed back with our linebred sires. In addition, we use sons of the outcross bulls to produce females that we breed back to our linebred sires. By using this approach, we have been able to incorporate the strengths the outcrosses have to offer, while maintaining the integrity of the linebreeding program.”

“Since 1988, most of the semen has come from French bulls and is an outcross to our bloodlines. While most of the French breeders still cling to their traditional type of cattle that we can’t use, there are a few individuals that are described as “Le Nouveau” (the new) Charolais, which more closely resemble our kind of cattle. It takes a great deal of breeding and selection before we are comfortable selling any cattle containing outside blood as range bulls.”

“We pasture grow our bulls, In the winter we supplement with hay. Our naturally grown bulls stand up well when they are put to work and do their job settling cows. Scott Frame, JLG Enterprises, Inc. technician, who probably semen tests more bulls each year than any other technician in California, tells us our bulls consistently receive the highest fertility scores of all bulls in all breeds that he tests. Obviously, higher fertility in the bulls contributes to improved conception rates.”

They sell their bulls off the farm with most staying in California, but some go to Oregon and Nevada each year as well. They sell around one hundred and fifty bulls each year with repeat customers being the mainstay 30

of their business.

“When I was younger, there were thirty packing plants in northern California. Now they are all closed.

I used to market some fat cattle to Pacific Packing Company, which produced the Dutch brands, but when boxed beef came in, that ended that.

So now anything that isn’t going to be kept as breeding stock is steered and shipped out to Wyoming or Colorado to be fed. “It is cheaper to put a light calf on wheels and get it closer to the final market.”

“The heifers calve first in mid August and the cows calve at the start of October. Outside of the semen we use to breed, the herd has been closed

engineering feats. This year they have 183 acres of a type of Roma tomato for paste or Campbells soup. This is all underground irrigated under each row and fertilized along with the water for their growing season. The seedings are transplanted and about 4 months later they are harvested. The Cannery that has the contract decides on the harvest time and these tomatos are bred so they virtually all mature at the same time.

They have also started to grow organic rice and last year had an incredible year with the rice running 90 sacks (100 lb/sack)/acre and the price was $42/sack. As a result they are growing more of it this year.

The 1600 acre farm has 13.5 miles of underground pipeline for irrigation which he has been working on since 1956. It also features laser levelled farm fields and a computer controlled variable frequency drive irrigation pumping facility - impressive

The whole Sacramento valley is a flood plain and everyone has water rights to use. If they don’t use it some years they can sell the water to others that may need more. They also flood irrigate their pastures with great productivity in this fertile soil. This was very interesting to us as there are over 168 different crops grown and many we had never seen before.

These two breeders have worked hard for Charolais and the industry. They have learned to utilize the resources available and have adapted to an ever-changing market.

OBITUARY

Kenneth Russell Fisher Ken Fisher, 69, of Emo, Ontario, entered into eternal peace after a courageous battle with cancer on July 21st, 2016 with his family by his side. Ken was born in Fort Frances to parents Russell and Mary Fisher.

He was united in marriage to Evelyn Alexander on April 26th, 1969. At an early age Ken started his farming career down east where he worked at a feedlot. After a year, he returned to Emo, purchased some property along the river and started to raise Charolais cattle. As well as working his own farm, he was honored to continue to farm his father and grandfather’s century homestead farm. Later on he added Belgian draft horses and enjoyed showing at the Emo Fair and giving many sleigh rides to people of the Rainy River District.

Prior to farming, Ken worked at various jobs in carpentry, mining, surveying and mineral exploration.

He also operated a Bull Test Station on his farm for 20 years and took pride in caring for all breeds.

Ken was very involved in numerous organizations; he served 32 years on council for the Municipality of Emo, operated a school bus for 45 years and was the owner of Fisher Monuments. He enjoyed being

involved with 4-H and helping the local youth with their cattle. Ken was a member of the Canadian Charolais Association for over 50 years and sponsored a trophy for Charolais cattle at the Emo Fall Fair every year.

He was also a loyal sponsor of the Borderland Quarter Horse Association.

Ken looked forward to his bi-annual bus trips that he provided for the seniors of both manors in Emo; at Christmas time they toured around town to see the lights and in the fall he drove them through the countryside to see the leaves changing colors and stopped at various highlights along the way.

His wife, Evie, worked tirelessly to support his dreams of farming, the school bus and a family. They enjoyed time together while they worked in their garden every summer and taking short trips to Nevada where they loved the warmth and scenery. Evie was a very dedicated loving wife whom always stayed right by his side.

Ken was lucky to have two daughters whom each picked up his passion for horses and cattle. Patty loved to be with the horses. She would show the Draft Horses with her dad and did all the braiding of manes and tails. They worked as a team with Ken visiting and Patty getting the horses prepared.

He taught her how to drive a 2 and 4 horse hitch and later showed her the

ropes when she got her first Quarter Horse. A passion that continued to her daughter, and Ken’s granddaughter, Paige. He loved watching Paige show her horse and spoke so highly of all her accomplishments. Charlene loved to be with the cattle. Ken and Charlene showed cattle at many local fairs and large exhibitions (Ag-Ex & Agribition) all across Canada and into the United States. Charlene enjoyed fitting the cattle and showing Charolais alongside her Dad. It was in the barns that Ken passed on many life lessons to Charlene that she continues to pass on to her daughter, and Ken’s newest granddaughter, Nya. He enjoyed travelling out west to shows and to see his cattle there, and more importantly to see Nya whom he loved to tease.

Ken loved to visit over coffee, laugh and tell great stories. He was the life of the party and everywhere he went people were drawn to him and his kind and giving heart. Ken will be greatly missed by his wife Evie, daughters Patty (Randy) McNally, Charlene Fisher, his grandchildren Paige McNally (Nolan Vold), Nya Fisher, sister Gail Paterson, in laws Alvin and Eileen Alexander, brother in laws Fred (Ruth) Alexander and Lawrence Alexander, sister in law Eleanor (Melvin) Morken and numerous nieces and nephews.

Let’s Be Careful What We Wish For! Grant Alexander Grant Alexander is a successful Shorthorn breeder from southern Saskatchewan who also helps publish the Shorthorn Report magazine. Although he is talking about his Shorthorns, his points are valid for all breeds.

Over the past number of years I have heard many cattle producers saying that we need to reduce our birth weights in order to be able to gain more commercial acceptance. I would agree with this, to a degree, but I think we better be careful what we wish for. The debate about birth weights should never been done without a discussion on calving ease at the same time. Gestation length is also a component and needs some discussion at the same time as well.

This is a complex topic as there are many genetic and environmental components that can affect both birth weights and calving ease. It simply isn’t a situation where you eliminate your calving issues by using low birth weight bulls. Low birth weights can bring a completely different set of problems as well.

All breeders use some common sense when it comes to deciding what they are going to sell for breeding stock. The older I get, the more I am becoming convinced that everything in life is best in optimum amounts.

That is true for the food we eat, the money in our bank accounts, the work we do, the size of our cattle… and the birth weights of our calves. In most everything I can think of, too much or too little is not necessarily a good thing.

One of the main reasons we need to talk about calving ease at the same time as we talk about birth weights is because of the relationship between performance and birth weights. Here on our farm we have now completed nine years of performance testing our bull calves after weaning. In those nine years, 342 bulls have gone through our bull pen and they have been weighed every 28 days from weaning through to our bull sales each spring. One thing that has caught my attention is that there has not been 34

a single bull in the lower 50% of our birth weights that has indexed over 100 for gain post weaning. Not a single one! I would have thought that somewhere along the line, one would have surfaced. Two years ago, I got pretty excited when I thought I had finally produced a low birth weight bull that was above average for performance. I got to enjoy this thought for a few days until I found out that I had made an error in calculating the gain after the previous weigh day. I will also add that the

There are also some pretty large operations today where cows are expected to calve on their own. A few years ago, we took a load of bulls to a range bull sale at Sturgis, SD. I was surprised that the bulls were selected almost opposite to how they would have been here. The smaller the birth weight the higher the sale price. I remember one of the buyers of our bulls saying that he flew his plane

I have also banded any bull calf born with a birth weight over 110 lbs during these nine years. There was no science behind my picking the value of the 110 pound birth weight but I decided to start there and move it as required. I have not moved it since I started this, as I have not had any reason to do so. In any case, of the 342 bulls we have tested, 330 were born unassisted and 12 were assisted due to mal-presentations. In those nine years, there were an additional 14 bulls steered because of their birth weights being over 110 lbs or they required assistance once the presentation issues were corrected.

Many of these had extra gestation length which is also a topic that needs to come into the discussion of the relationship of birth weights and calving ease. I have banded some pretty good bull calves because of their birth weights, but I would rather do this, than have a bull buyer complain to me about the calving issues he had from a bull sometime in the future.

I am certainly not saying that there is not a place for low birth weight bulls. There will always be a place for bulls for use on heifers. We all have to Charolais Banner • October 2016

over the heifer pastures during calving 2-3 times a week and the main cow herd once a week. If it looked like there were too many dead or cows having problems, they then rode through the pastures on horseback.

When you manage your herd in this manner, you soon learn that a live calf has a far better gain than a dead calf ever will have.

A few years ago I had a discussion with a leading cattle buyer in which he told me it was getting harder for him to gather uniform groups of feeder calves for his buyers than it was a few years ago. When I asked him what he thought was causing this, his answer totally surprised me. He said he felt one of the main reasons was because of the beef industry’s obsession with birth weights. In his opinion, too many bulls were being selected only because of their low birth weights and they were responsible for siring calves with a wide range of performance. This resulted in less uniformity in the feeder calves being offered. I am not sure this is the only reason this may have happened but to this man, or it was one of the main reasons, but I tend to believe that, at least, it was a contributing factor.

When we hear someone claiming that birth weights are too high, we need to be ready with the right answers. industry. There has to be adjustments from time to time to deal with changes within our industry and with consumer demands. The problem is that when the pendulum of change starts to swing, it oftentimes goes on past where it should have stopped and then we see it move back the other way again, and it goes too far in the opposite direction. I guess this probably the human nature factor showing itself, but it also suggests that if we stay somewhere in the middle, we can catch the pendulum as it moves in both directions. This holds true when we are dealing with birth weights as well.

One more thing that has been proven in many research studies in recent years is that selection for low birth weight sires for too many generations will also lead to smaller pelvic size in the cow herd. It will also lead to smaller framed cows. You may want to raise smaller framed cows, but this is not the selection method

you should use. This is yet another thing that factors into any discussion on birth weights vs calving ease. Most things in animals we raise are linked to each other. That is why changes to one area usually leads to changes in other places. For example if you select for more muscling in your herd, not only will you see larger rib eye areas but you will have increases in muscling in all parts of the animal.

This is similar to how selection for lower birth weights can affect things such as pelvic area in the females in your herd.

At the end of the day, I think it is important for us all to get on the same page with our facts. When we hear someone claiming that birth weights are too high, we need to be ready with the right answers. We need to tell them that our birth weights and calving ease have seen improvement and that we are working hard to make our breeding stock user friendly. I had a discussion a few months ago Charolais Banner • October 2016

with a breeder who said that it was virtually impossible to sell a bull in his area that had a birth weight over 85 lbs. I told this guy that either they weren’t weighing their calves or they needed to sell their cows and replace them with cows that could calve bigger, normal sized calves. In the part of the world where I live, I think a mature cow should be expected to calve a 95 to 100 lb calf easily on her own. If we all strived for this, I think everyone in this industry would be in a better place. Again common sense has to play a role in our breeding decisions, and common sense has to be used by all purebred breeders when it comes time to select the breeding stock they will offer to the public. With the strong connection between birth weights, performance and the ability for a bull’s daughters to calve easily, I think we should strive to produce breeding stock that fit into the optimum category. Again, too much or too little can lead us where we don’t want to go.

In the early days of Helge’s career with the Charolais Banner, I attended a production sale with him in southern Saskatchewan. It was a terrific sale and gathered a lot of interest from the U.S. and Canada.

After the sale, there was a social in the hotel where everyone was staying.

One person from the U.S. was there and I knew who he was, but he did not know me. He purchased the high seller at the sale and I didn’t feel it was right for him to be sitting alone.

I decided to be social and go over and introduce myself.

I knew his name was Larry, as I heard many people calling him that throughout the day. I walked over and sat down and said, “Hi Larry, I don’t believe we’ve been introduced, my name is Candace.”

He looked at me and sort of sneered, “It’s Doctor Grimes to you.”

I didn’t miss a beat and pleasantly told him, “Oh okay, then it’s Mrs. By to you.”

It was pretty clear why he was sitting alone and it was a fairly short conversation. The interesting thing is every time I saw him in the future, he made a point of coming over to talk to me. I guess the short conversation left some kind of an impression.

A long time ago when Helge and I still lived in an apartment, we had his biggest clients over for supper during Agribition. I wanted everything to be just right. We had planned to fondue over the course of the evening and just enjoy their company. It was a man and wife and their hired man.

Our little galley kitchen was tiny and everything had to be prepped ahead of time or there wouldn’t have been any room on the counters to serve anything. Getting everyone seated around our hand-me-down

chrome table from my grandmother, was no easy task. Everyone had to enter their place in order, to fit in the cramped quarters and I hoped no one had to leave to go to the bathroom.

Everything was going really well until one of the fondue pots ran out of fuel. Luckily, we had extra fuel and just had to fill the empty burner.

Sounds simple. We managed to retrieve the hot burner and fill it with fuel and replace it under the pot.

We lit the burner and things were under way again, until the flames started to get too high. We closed the air vents on the burner so not as much air was assisting the burn. Simple fix, but it didn’t work. As the fuel heated, it expanded and apparently we had put too much in the burner. Now it was running over the edges of the burner and flames were licking up around the edge of the pot.

We put the lid on the burner thinking that would snuff it out, but continued on page 43

The event started with a Youth meeting which saw many juniors from

across the province come to participate, drawing attention to how many young juniors are coming up in Manitoba.

Following the meeting and a break for lunch, the pen show started with a great turnout of 19 purebred cow/calf pairs and 3 commercial cow/calf pairs exhibited. HTA Charolais, Rivers, won

In an act of desperation, our ever so polite guest gently but quickly suggested I try baking soda to extinguish the flames. I reached for the baking soda and a generous dousing did the trick. The tension in the room definitely changed as everyone started to relax from their jump and run perched posture. We were all very pleased with this result, but there was another problem, burning baking soda releases quite

terrible fumes. Our eyes were watering and we needed some fresh air.

Helge managed to open the window on this cold winter’s night.

The hired man was sitting closest to the window and I was concerned he was going to be too cold. I asked if he was alright and he replied, “Oh yes, I am fine,” but you could see his breath right there in our kitchen. Funny, no one was really hungry anymore.

Everybody got pretty nervous instead of amused at this point and getting away from this cramped space wasn’t exactly easy. We were like people sitting in a bull arena playing poker hoping the bull didn’t come for us first, holding our chair and being brave, but we all had fear in our eyes.

CANADIAN CHAROLAIS YOUTH ASSOCIATION NEWS

2016 CCYA AGM News Shae-Lynn Evans, President

This year’s CCYA Annual General Meeting was held at our conference in Olds, Alberta, on July 15. We began the meeting going over financial details, such as what our main sources of income and expenses are throughout the year. Our income this year includes CCA sponsorship for education awards, membership fees, Charolais Banner calendar project, T Bar Invitational donation, fundraisers (McCaw Field Day Calcutta and Semen Auction), and conference proceeds from Saskatchewan. This year’s expenses include the Education Award, Youth Coordinator payment, the Essay Competition, Leadership Scholarship, National Board Winter Meeting, Conference and Show expenses, conference calls, new member rebates, website fees, and the Genetics Program.

We continued the meeting by reviewing the year, which included a very successful Semen Auction raising approximately $4475 in scholarship funds. Our Genetics Program was also a great success with about 15 applicants receiving semen from various bulls, provided by the youth association. Our spring and fall newsletters were sent to members

including lots of insightful information from the National Board members. This year was also the first year of changing our membership year to run from January to January (instead of July to July) to coincide with the CCA membership year in hopes of increasing our membership numbers, which indeed it did, as our membership numbers were around 100 this year – a significant increase!

The National Board Winter Meeting was once again held in Saskatoon in January and we discussed the above topics, as well as classes at the conference, showmanship class divisions, and sponsorship for the Ambassador Award (Manitoba Youth Association). I gave a brief overview of my trip to Australia this summer where I represented the CCYA at the Australian National Youth Stampede in Dubbo, NSW. We spoke about our partnership with Ag More Than Ever, and decided to renew this.

We also discussed that next year’s conference will be held in Barrie, Ontario, from August 2-6. There were no changes to any policies or procedures this year. We had a great turn out at the conference, so the AGM was well attended. It was a very successful show and was run very smoothly. Having the conference in conjunction with Synergy was excellent and the Charolais kids did

Canadian Beef Breeds Council Report Michael Latimer, CBBC Executive Director

The fall months in Canada are always a busy time of year in the beef cattle industry.

It will be interesting to see how the cattle markets evolve during the fall run of commercial calf sales and purebred sales as we may not be at the bottom of the market yet. The commercial market is significantly lower this year than in the previous few and is challenging to predict where the price for purebred cattle will end up by the end of 2016 and into 2017.

CBBC is joining the Canadian and Alberta governments on several trade missions this fall. This will take us to Italy, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Georgia and China. Our role in these trade missions is to promote Canadian purebred beef cattle and genetics as well as work to ensure that we have meaningful market access that adds value back to our industry. Over the past few years, our industry has enjoyed record prices domestically and international markets were not as important to the profitability of farms.

However, as discussed in my opening statement, in order to maintain our current purebred cattle prices we need to push hard to continue the development of international markets.

This takes considerable time and isn’t accomplished easily or overnight.

Breed associations as a primary component of CBBC, play an important role as they work as advocates for our industry and to promote breed attributes and industry capacity.

Often, organizations in international markets are as interested in the capability of our industry and ability to deliver value added products or technology transfer, as they are in the cattle themselves. Livestock exporters then work to make sales, source cattle, transport them to the buyer, and in some cases provide after sales support. Our shows are a great focal point for incoming delegations and for us to showcase our world leading genetics. So I encourage you, as breeders, to play an active role in supporting the international programs that our shows offer and welcome our international visitors with open arms.

The CFIA is currently modernizing regulations for the collection and distribution of bovine semen collected within Canada. We will be working closely with CFIA, semen companies, breed associations and other livestock industry groups to ensure that new regulations work for the beef cattle industry. By this, the regulations need to maintain or improve our current ability to export semen, and also work for the domestic trade of beef cattle semen. This isn’t to alarm you but to inform you that changes are on the horizon.

Planning for the Canadian Beef Industry Conference 2017 has begun.

It will be hosted once again in Calgary and then it will be on the move to other regions in Canada. If you are interested in helping organize future conferences or if you have ideas for a theme or speakers you would like to hear, please let us know. We want this to be inclusive, informative and the most fun you will have working all summer.

While serving on the Manitoba Cattle Producers board, Bob and fellow cattlemen initiated the Douglas Bull Test Station in the late 60s. In 1969, Bob served as the first president and founding partner of Bar- 5 Simmentals, Brandon, MB. Bob initiated the importation of Simmental cattle from Europe. Achilles Cattle Co. hired Bob as manager to promote and sell Simmental semen all over the world.

In the 70s, the Hereford herd was established when his children’s love for showing cattle began. While serving as director of the Canadian Hereford Association, Bob initiated the formation of the Canadian Junior Hereford Association (CJHA) hosting the inaugural youth event at Kinnaber

in 1979. Bob was intrigued by the Angus breed and developed a small herd in the 80s. His experience with multiple breeds led him to be named Sire Selector and Manager of the Beef Program for Western Breeders / Alta Genetics, Balzac, AB, in 1985. Bob was inducted into the Canadian Agricultural Hall of Fame in 1995. In 2007, Bob and Joyce together were inducted into the Manitoba Agricultural Hall of Fame for their contribution to agriculture and the beef industry.

In 2003, Bob and Joyce wrote, “A Cattleman’s Walk Down Memory Lane”, a book chronicling their lifelong experiences in farming and livestock industry. Bob and Joyce retired to Boissevain in 2008.

Bob and his brother Wayne formed Kinnaber Cattle Co., establishing a Shorthorn operation. Bob was named “Builder of the Shorthorn Breed” in 1970. He was instrumental in forming the Canadian Shorthorn Lassie Organization and president and director of the Manitoba Shorthorn Club. Kinnaber won three consecutive Grand Champion Females and two Reserve Grand Champions between 1969 and 1971, at the esteemed National Western Stock Show in Denver and two Champions at the 1968 and 1969 Chicago International.

Bob judged many livestock shows including the Agribition, Toronto Royal, many 4-H achievement days and U.S. state fairs.

Craig and Tricia Wilgenbusch, of Wilgenbusch Charolais, Halbrite, Saskatchewan, are excited to announce the arrival of their first child, Harper Faith, on August 4th, 2016, weighing 8 lb., 15 oz. Proud grandma is Brenda Wilgenbusch.

Johnson – Przekop Wed Dacie Przekop and Stephen Johnson were married on August 27, 2016 in Waskatenau, Alberta. Dacie runs her

family's purebred Simmental operation, Lake Bottom Cattle Co., of Waskatenau.

Stephen is the son of Herb and Brenda Johnson, of Johnson Charolais, Barrhead. Stephen and Dacie have made their home at Barrhead.
