More Memories Than Dreams

Grandpa David was an avid fisherman and outdoorsman. He enjoyed a fish putting up a good fight. His favourite phrase was keep’em as big as you can as long as you can.

On one occasion, Grandpa had planned a fishing trip for Saturday – the day when I had Wyatt home and working cattle was the norm.

A young lad fitted on his boots and cowboy hat, positioned his badge as he opened the door.

He grasped the reins of his broomstick horse as he galloped across the deck floor.

He nudged the old man being hugged by a chair, his chin tucked tight to his chest.

Wake-up Grandpa – Are you dreaming dreams, or are your eyes just having a rest?

A raspy voice retorted – Dreams – I can tell you dreams – see I once had a horse like that.

It was a wooden rocking horse that your Great Grandpa made – proudly on it I sat.

That horse and I we once rode together, pounded dirt and rocked through many a year.

On top of that steed I roped rank renegades, and in a rodeo he’d buck and rear.

We chased those outlaws moving hard and fast, we set a frisky pace.

That horse was a champion that’s for sure, he always won the race.

We scouted out Jesse James and Geronimo made ‘em run with a yip and a whoop.

Then we team roped in the arena, headed and healed all with only one loop.

On that wood floor we drug calves for branding and roped charging bull.

We corralled white faced heifers in record time, and even competed in a heavy horse pull.

Now toy ponies – they gallop on forever, but young cowboys not so much.

Wooden horses and championship ribbons, are set aside for grown up things and such.

No one really knows how it happens, growing cowboys gradually spread their wings.

Sheriff badges, outlaws, and six shooters are abandoned to corral other things.

So ride that horse hard, let her buck, over rolling hills that are forever wild.

Shake out a loop and lasso the stars before you’re no longer a child.

Gather in your dreams and cinch ‘em up tight, then ride them for all they are worth, Cut them out fast from the billowing clouds and a memory will become it’s birth.

So as I sit here – Am I dreaming dreams? – Na – You see, that’s what Grandsons are for.

They’re no longer dreams, merely memories, more memories than dreams anymore.

When Grandpa announced that he and his grandson Wyatt were going fishing – I said I had planned to work heifers that day. All Grandpa Dave said was “What good is a Grandpa if he can’t take his Grandson fishing?” Now I realize how much wisdom was in that logic. Maybe it was wisdom – maybe just common sense.

Kind of makes you think our politicians would probably do a better job if they would have gone fishing more often.

Anyway – Grandpa and Wyatt had a good day fishing.

As the sun does glisten, on the water if you listen, you can hear two old boys start to talk.

From home they were missing, cause they were out a fishing, stretched on that big black rock.

Mac said – Boy this is fun, laying out in the sun, just waiting for the big one to bite.

The only thing I never done, was let my wife know where I’ve gone, she’ll be nattering at me all night.

Judd replied mine said fishing is a waste, as I left the house in haste, funny how women have their ways.

I might just leave the place, and by herself her life she’ll face, cause she ain’t going to talk to me for ten days.

Mac – he took a sip of his brew, as he repositioned his chew, then gave his reel a short wind.

He said – If I was only you, I’d reconsider my view, cause a woman like that is mighty hard to find.

Selection for correct feet and legs, strong user friendly udders and moderate easy fleshing is the norm in our breeding program – why should it not be – that’s what commercial cattlemen demand.

We prefer to compare our cows to a factory – functionally sound, economical, moderate sized, fertile milking machines with user friendly udders. – treat them right and they will continue to produce for you year after year.

We have set a breeding program for low to moderate birth weight – due to stacking pedigrees on birth weight and gestation period. Easy fleshing and moderate frame score make these bulls and females very appealing.

This year we had the pleasure of working with two up and coming young cattlemen.

Ty Schwan and Greg Gillis have bulls in our sale this year. The bulls fit right into our bull pen and fed out right along side our own bulls. Ty and Greg have the knowledge of the Angus industry and know pedigrees and bloodlines as good as any long time Angus breeder. Talking to these two young cattlemen it is evident our livestock industry is in good hands with this younger generation.

PIONEER is a Final Answer son that follows in his sires footsteps. He sires stout, deep musculine sons and daughters with his dams phenotype. Use Pioneer sons for claving ease as well as performance.

The calves born on our ranch from Pioneer last year average 79.5 lbs. with a gestation period of 277 days. A couple of his sons have pedigrees stacked with Duramax – concentrating calving ease even further.

We have strived to maintain a cattle operation with low maintenance, easy fleshing type cattle. We have therefore selected bulls to use in our AI program and natural breeding program which will pass on those desired results. Many of the bulls on offer have been born the end of March and into the first couple weeks of April. The bulls have all been fed a growing ration to target a gain of approximately 2.8 to 3 pounds per day, maintaining adequate growth but have not been pushed hard. All bulls have undergone a reproductive evaluation by Horseshoe Vet Clinic and will be sold sexually sound. Most cattle breeders now put bulls in the breeding fields in June or July.

Therefore these bulls will still have approximately 2 months to continue growing and developing before the breeding season commences.

We have strived to select AI bulls and develop a breeding program which is in harmony with calving ease as well as performance. Although many associate calving ease with birth weight (as do we to a degree), there are other factors that come into play. I have often thought that birth weights should be like buying t-shirts: small, medium, large and X-large (don’t want to go there). Consideration should also be placed on genetic make up (bloodlines), environmental, and management practices. I have become aware that gestation length is a contributing factor. By using bulls which pass on shorter gestation periods to their calves they can attribute to calving ease. We have concentrated on bulls with gestation lengths of 270 to 280 days. The average gestation length (benchmark) for the Angus breed is 283 days. From our first calf heifers this year we have had calves born from 268 to 294 days gestation and birth weights from 56 to 93 pounds. By calving ease stacked pedigrees we refer to low birth weight and short gestation length on the sire side as well as the sire of the mother.

FRL WINDY 13W was purchased from the Forsyth Ranch. We used him as cleanup bull on our heifers. Last year he was turned out with a select group of Duramax females.

The AI bulls we use are moderate framed (under frame score 6 closer to 5 even better – although we have made the odd exception), under 90 pound birth weight and excel in performance. We calve out about 50-60 heifers yearly. After one calf they become a cow. Cows graze out all winter one mile from home headquarters and calve out there on native prairie. We don't split cows into groups and feed 3 and 4 year olds special or 12 and 14 year old cows special. A cow is a cow, either they make it or are culled. Heifers calve in February, cows in April the calves are weaned normally the third week of October.

The cattle we raise must adhere to our conditions in short grass country. We breed our heifers to calve in February before the main cow herd starts due date of March 25 - April 1. We have followed an AI breeding program here on the ranch every year since 1971. Guess I'm an "old timer” cause that's 40 years. At the Burnett ranch not all types of critters fit into our breeding program. I have heard purebred breeders say "We have a few of each different type of purebreds so we have what any customer wants." Well you won't find that at the Burnett ranch. The big 1800 pound slap sided cows do not do well on our ranch. The big boned 2700+ pound bulls that have 100+ birth weights won't find work at our ranch. And big fat show heifers that weigh 1500 pounds certainly aren't the norm here.

The AI bulls we use are moderate framed (under frame score 6 closer to 5 even better – although we have made the odd exception), under 90 pound birth weight and excel in performance. We calve out about 50-60 heifers yearly. After one calf they become a cow. Cows graze out all winter one mile from home headquarters and calve out there on native prairie. We don't split cows into groups and feed 3 and 4 year olds special or 12 and 14 year old cows special. A cow is a cow, either they make it or are culled. Heifers calve in February, cows in April the calves are weaned normally the third week of October.

At the Burnett ranch not all types of critters fit into our breeding program. We have strived to select AI bulls and develop a breeding program which is in harmony with calving ease as well as performance. Although many associate calving ease with birth weight (as do we to a degree), there are other factors that come into play. I have often thought that birth weights should be like buying t-shirts: small, medium, large and X-large (don’t want to go there). Consideration should also be placed on genetic make up (bloodlines), environmental, and management practices. I have become aware that gestation length is a contributing factor. By using bulls which pass on shorter gestation periods to their calves they can attribute to calving ease. We have concentrated on bulls with gestation lengths of 270 to 280 days. The average gestation length (benchmark) for the Angus breed is 283 days. From our first calf heifers this year we have had calves born from 268 to 294 days gestation and birth weights from 56 to 93 pounds. By calving ease stacked pedigrees we refer to low birth weight and short gestation length on the sire side as well as the sire of the mother.

We have strived to maintain a cattle operation with low maintenance, easy fleshing type cattle. We have therefore selected bulls to use in our AI program and natural breeding program which will pass on those desired results. Many of the bulls on offer have been born the end of March and into the first couple weeks of April. The bulls have all been fed a growing ration to target a gain of approximately 2.8 to 3 pounds per day, maintaining adequate growth but have not been pushed hard. All bulls have undergone a reproductive evaluation by Horseshoe Vet Clinic and will be sold sexually sound. Most cattle breeders now put bulls in the breeding fields in June or July.

Therefore these bulls will still have approximately 2 months to continue growing and developing before the breeding season commences.

Our program is very similar in philosophy to that of the many commercial cattlemen that use our breeding stock. Cattle that work for us. Selection for correct feet and legs, strong user friendly udders and moderate easy fleshing is the norm in our breeding program – why should it not be – that’s what commercial cattlemen demand.

We prefer to compare our cows to a factory – functionally sound, economical, moderate sized, fertile milking machines with user friendly udders. – treat them right and they will continue to produce for you year after year.

More Memories Than Dreams

Grandpa David was an avid fisherman and outdoorsman. He enjoyed a fish putting up a good fight. His favourite phrase was keep’em as big as you can as long as you can.

On one occasion, Grandpa had planned a fishing trip for Saturday – the day when I had Wyatt home and working cattle was the norm.

A young lad fitted on his boots and cowboy hat, positioned his badge as he opened the door.

He grasped the reins of his broomstick horse as he galloped across the deck floor.

He nudged the old man being hugged by a chair, his chin tucked tight to his chest.

Wake-up Grandpa – Are you dreaming dreams, or are your eyes just having a rest?

A raspy voice retorted – Dreams – I can tell you dreams – see I once had a horse like that.

It was a wooden rocking horse that your Great Grandpa made – proudly on it I sat.

That horse and I we once rode together, pounded dirt and rocked through many a year.

On top of that steed I roped rank renegades, and in a rodeo he’d buck and rear.

We chased those outlaws moving hard and fast, we set a frisky pace.

That horse was a champion that’s for sure, he always won the race.

We scouted out Jesse James and Geronimo made ‘em run with a yip and a whoop.

Then we team roped in the arena, headed and healed all with only one loop.

On that wood floor we drug calves for branding and roped charging bull.

We corralled white faced heifers in record time, and even competed in a heavy horse pull.

Now toy ponies – they gallop on forever, but young cowboys not so much.

Wooden horses and championship ribbons, are set aside for grown up things and such.

No one really knows how it happens, growing cowboys gradually spread their wings.

Sheriff badges, outlaws, and six shooters are abandoned to corral other things.

So ride that horse hard, let her buck, over rolling hills that are forever wild.

Shake out a loop and lasso the stars before you’re no longer a child.

Gather in your dreams and cinch ‘em up tight, then ride them for all they are worth, Cut them out fast from the billowing clouds and a memory will become it’s birth.

So as I sit here – Am I dreaming dreams? – Na – You see, that’s what Grandsons are for.

They’re no longer dreams, merely memories, more memories than dreams anymore.

When Grandpa announced that he and his grandson Wyatt were going fishing – I said I had planned to work heifers that day. All Grandpa Dave said was “What good is a Grandpa if he can’t take his Grandson fishing?” Now I realize how much wisdom was in that logic. Maybe it was wisdom – maybe just common sense.

Kind of makes you think our politicians would probably do a better job if they would have gone fishing more often.

Anyway – Grandpa and Wyatt had a good day fishing.

As the sun does glisten, on the water if you listen, you can hear two old boys start to talk.

From home they were missing, cause they were out a fishing, stretched on that big black rock.

Mac said – Boy this is fun, laying out in the sun, just waiting for the big one to bite.

The only thing I never done, was let my wife know where I’ve gone, she’ll be nattering at me all night.

Judd replied mine said fishing is a waste, as I left the house in haste, funny how women have their ways.

I might just leave the place, and by herself her life she’ll face, cause she ain’t going to talk to me for ten days.

Mac – he took a sip of his brew, as he repositioned his chew, then gave his reel a short wind.

He said – If I was only you, I’d reconsider my view, cause a woman like that is mighty hard to find.
