Welcome to the Bar Punch charolais DisPersal sale Please join us for complimentary lunch before the sale John Hoff was born in 1925 and has decided it is probably time to disperse his herd of Full French cattle. The cows have been on a share basis at Maple Leaf Charolais and Stephen Charolais, thus the calves are not in the sale except for a few that were too young to wean. John has been breeding Charolais in six different decades and his enthusiasm is still as strong today as when he started in the 1960s. Candace and I have enjoyed getting to know John over the last number of years and, being a Charolais history buff, we drove many miles while listening to stories of his early days in the breed. This group of females is a combination of cattle he has been developing for a long time, combined with many females he purchased from the front end of sales across the country in the last few years. When John went to a sale, he wanted to buy the best and did. The last number of years John has been working on building the polled influence in these Full French cattle and really moved ahead when he purchased the 901W bull. This excellent son of Virgil proved to be Homozygous Polled and has done a great job breeding. This summer touring John’s herd at Maple Leaf where
the bull has been working, I saw a very solid set of calves with meat, hair and the polled head in this sire group. When the Full French cattle were introduced into Canada in the mid sixties, they added performance, docility, hair and meat to the existing purebred and percentage Charolais that had arrived in the country from the United States. Still today they are noted for these traits and there are many commercial producers that look for the French bulls to give them the stout topped, feeder calves with which they top the markets. This is a great opportunity to start a new herd or add to your existing program with some good young females that will go on to make money for you. the history of Bar Punch ranch “I bought the entire Townsend herd of Hereford cattle in 1964 and that was the start of Bar Punch Ranch. The land I had was suited for cattle,” John starts to tell. “I didn’t own any Charolais females yet, but I read about this upbreeding program. Some of them were getting these 3/4 and 7/8 bulls and there were calving problems but Litton’s brochure “The Bullogram” I picked up at the service station got me interested. It said that if I used a purebred bull you could breed up to purebred. I thought if I bred my cows and keep upbreeding, each calf crop would increase in value to be worth more than the cow. I couldn’t see how I could go wrong. Litton Ranch in Chillicothe, Missouri, really had a promotion program going. The Bullogram was in John’s local service station, in Redvers, Saskatchewan, to pick up and read, all the way from Missouri. “We went down to have a look and see about a bull. They were July calves and they were weaning them in February. He had just put the calves in the pen when we got there and Jerry was booked for a speaking engagement that night. It was about 4 o’clock in the afternoon when we got there and he said they had a little cabin and told us to stay in that and we would talk in the morning. When I met him in the morning and told him which one I

picked out, his eyes lit up and he said, “Gee, that’s going to be quite a bull.” He turned out to be a good bull. “As far as Litton’s bulls, they were the top breeding in the U.S. at the time. LCR Sir Sam 72nd was the first bull he bought and he was 6 months old. “I paid $5000 at that time, oh a lot of people thought that I was just crazy, but I was just lucky with my banker. I didn’t have the money. I mean I just scraped all the time, I went through most of my life that way. But the banker got curious and always watched my credit rating and knew what was going on. He went along with it and I bought this $5000 bull, but I had the pick of the calf crop and I used that bull before he was a year old, in May and June and he didn’t turn one until the 2nd of July. Jerry Litton delivered him. I didn’t know about what was happening in Canada until after I bought my bull and joined the Association. I used to go visit with Rodney James when I went out to Alberta to buy equipment for my road
construction business. When I started I didn’t even know about the first importation. I just bought my first bull in 1965 and that’s the year the cattle were already selected and they were in Gros Illes. I went down to Quebec to see that first shipment of bulls, in the spring of 1966. A bunch of guys went down and rode the trains. A lot of people went and the excitement was really high. “On the B importation, I brought a female, Briquette FFC148. “On the C importation I got a bull, Clotaire 58227 C07. Didn’t particularly like him, I didn’t pick him out. I sold a half interest and possession to Richard Wear in the States. I think it was Ray Woodward that picked out the bull, he also picked out Artiste and Dessauny. I was satisfied with his selection of Briquette, so I let him pick out a bull for me. “On the D importation I got two permits and picked two heifers. I think I had 17 imports in total. 5 in the E importation, 5 in the F, 5 in the G and in H I only got one. I was discouraged to be cut back to one and I toyed with the idea of dispersing them then. But, you know, I just got a little too married to the Charolais. “I had my first production sale in 1969, on the 31st of March and just sold percentage yearling heifers. They were mostly half-blood heifers of the Sam bull I bought and I A.I.d them to Artiste. I sold the lower percentage females and kept anything 7/8 or higher. “At my first production sale, Denzil Sutton had been watching the testing of Charolais in Saskatoon and he knew we had something. He was one of the top Polled Hereford breeders and he started

breeding polled into Charolais. He stopped in one day at my place at Redvers. At that sale, he bought three head, but they were transferred into Wilma’s name. Here we weren’t even looking for polled then, but the three head he bought were all polled. He dispersed his Herefords before long and he was buying good Charolais cattle – half French, Aiglon daughters. He got a polled bull in the States and he started to push polled Charolais. “In the 70s we had the hotel in Redvers and we were still farming. The last grid road I built was in 1966. In the 50s and 60s we built roads and I started with just a backhoe and we had an old cat on the farm and I had rigged a dozer up on it. I had done some cutting for Sask Power because that was when they were going through the province to install power. So I went to Winnipeg and got an old TD14. “I tell young guys now that they have to keep their credit rating good. It doesn’t matter how good a deal is, if you haven’t got the money or can’t get it, that’s it. You’re done. “I got married December 5, 1951, so I could get off the farm and get on my own. I never really worked for anybody else. I’ve always been my own boss and called my own shots. And I paid pretty near 18% interest most of my life. I was always good with the finance companies because I could buy equipment, sometimes with nothing down. I got so
as I never kept anything, if I wasn’t using it I sold it. It never sat idle and usually if you buy right, you can sell right. “Nobody gave me anything to speak of. At that time I had 3 quarters of land and we paid $1200 for it in back taxes as it had been lost during the thirties. That is how I accummulated the land, when I sold it I had four sections. It wasn’t all paid for, but I never had a problem keeping it up. One banker told me, “As long as you are worrying, we don’t have to. It’s when you quit worrying that we better start.” “We bought the hotel in Redvers in 1976 and sold the farmland to an American but retained the mineral rights. They said we could keep our cattle there but a year or so later, they starting tearing down fences. So I was scrambling to rent pastures and ended up selling the cows. We sold the hotel in Redvers in the spring of 1979 or 1980. Then we bought the hotel in Kennedy but never even had it a year. My real estate agent in Regina knew I wanted to get over Alberta way because our boys were all there. So he called me when Burstall Hotel came up for sale. Burstall is in Saskatchewan close to the Alberta border north of Maple Creek. “When in Burstall I started buying cattle again from Ed and Pat Silbernagel, of Bar 7 Easy. I was asking around and there weren’t many Full French cattle around, but I was able to
buy some heifer calves from him. Pat had a book of all the pedigrees and I started looking through it and couldn’t get over what they had. They had all the best damn pedigrees and he was buying them at market price. I kept my cattle with Colin Herter to start with. I think the most interest I paid on land was 10%. “When the tall cattle were in style, I wasn’t very active, but I kept up my Charolais Association membership. “We sold the bar in Burstall in 1994 and moved to Medicine Hat. I bought that land in Medicine Hat when we moved to Burstall because I saw it and I liked it. It was just prairie then, but it is a busy street now. Jean passed away in 1995. “I like the genetics of it and what I can put together. I like the Full French because they are all parentage verified and you can trace them all the back to France. I am back up over 50 head. It would be nice to keep them until I have a complete polled Full French herd to disperse, but I don’t even buy green bananas anymore at my age. I’ve enjoyed my time in the breed and it has always kept me interested,” John concludes with a big grin. His interest and love of the breed are evident. He also enjoys the action and competition of the auction. It will be interesting to see if he will be able to contain himself and not buy more cattle following this dispersal.

Terms: The terms of the sale are cash or cheque payable immediately after the sale in Canadian funds. All settlements must be made with the sale clerks before cattle will be released. The right of property will not pass until final payment is made. Bidding: Each animal will sell to the highest bidder. Bidders unable to attend the sale may phone their bids and instructions to the sale manager, auctioneer or special representatives. Bids must be received in sufficient time prior to the sale. Disputes: Bidding will be reopened between the parties involved. If no further bid is made, the buyer will be the person from whom the auctioneer accepted the last bid. The auctioneer’s decision is final. Announcements: Announcements made from the auction block will take precedence over printed matter in the catalogue. Buyers are cautioned to pay close attention to announcements. Purchaser’s Risk: Each animal becomes the risk of the purchaser as soon as sold. Animals will be cared for at the purchaser’s risk for a reasonable length of time. All animals left with the seller must be insured. Certificate of Registration: Each animal will carry papers issued by the Canadian Charolais Association. A certificate of registry duly transferred will be furnished to the buyer after payment has been made. Accidents: Although every precaution will be taken to protect the safety and comfort of buyers, neither the sale manager, auctioneer, or sellers assume any responsibility and disclaim any liability, legal or otherwise, in the event of accident or loss of property. By Livestock is only acting as a medium between the buyer and seller and is not responsible for failure on the part of either party to live up to their obligations; or for the truth of any warrantees or representations, expressed or implied. By Livestock assumes no obligation to enforce or collect monies between parties. By Livestock assumes no responsibility for any credit extended by the seller to the buyer. Any legal action taken in exceptional cases must be between the buyer and the seller. The buyer must look to the seller for fulfilment of all guarantees and representations.
