AS I SEE IT
How High’s the Water, Momma? Robbie Chomik
What a crazy summer it has been when it comes to rainfall. It seems this has been the story right across the country. What we once considered "normal" rainfall certainly wasn't the norm this year. Even so, I'll go out on a limb and say that most areas eventually received adequate moisture and were rewarded with green grass. Considering how dry the spring began, that's something to be thankful for. Here at home, we've received well above our average rainfall. It's great to see full ponds, running creeks, and lush green pastures. Hoof rot, however, hasn't been nearly as enjoyable. In this 60th Herdsire issue you will find ads for multiple Charolais dispersals and breeders promoting their programs. We also thought it would be fun to look back over the past 60 years of Herdsire issues and see how the breed has changed over the years. Hope you enjoy the pictures and excerpts we pulled from various ads over the past 60 years. In early June, news broke about the detection of a three-week-old calf in Texas with screwworm. At the time of writing, the situation remains isolated to Texas and New Mexico. Since I last sat down to write, we've made two trips to eastern Canada. The first was in mid-June for the Canadian Charolais Association AGM and tour in the Maritimes. It turned into a fantastic week spent with a great group of people from across the country, and I'm certainly glad we made the trip.
6
We had the opportunity to visit four different Charolais operations and meet breeders from across the Maritimes. It's hard to say what everyone enjoyed most—the breathtaking scenery, the adventures, the incredible seafood, or the endless supply of ice cream. The older I get, the more I appreciate not only the places I visit but the people I get to experience them with. One of the greatest rewards of being involved in the livestock industry is the friendships you make along the way. Most of the people riding in our van were strangers at the beginning of the week, but it didn't take long before the stories, laughter, and good-natured teasing took over. By the end of the trip, it felt like we'd known each other for years. If you ever have the chance to take part in one of these tours, I highly recommend making the time. One of the biggest highlights for Candice and myself was tidal bore rafting on the Bay of Fundy. I never imagined you could laugh that hard while trying not to die. While we were away, we learned that Viking Auction Market in Alberta had burned to the ground, only a few months after celebrating its 20th anniversary. Many people don't realize what a tremendous loss a livestock auction market is—not only for producers, but for an entire rural community. Auction markets are much more than places to buy and sell cattle; they're gathering places, economic drivers, and an important part of the agricultural landscape. Toward the end of June, I read an article about Cape Breton Regional

Municipality investing $250,000 in MB Meat Company in Judique, Inverness County. The business provides custom slaughter and cut-and-wrap services for regional livestock producers while also marketing locally raised beef and other products directly to consumers. The investment, made through Perennia's Nova Scotia Beef Processing Program and the Nova Scotia Beef Initiative, will help increase local processing capacity and improve access to Cape Bretonraised beef. It's encouraging to see governments supporting projects that strengthen local agriculture and food production. Later in the summer, Candice, our two youngest daughters, and I travelled to Ontario for the Canadian Charolais Youth Association Conference and Show in Carp. Despite the heat, it was another excellent week filled with outstanding young cattle enthusiasts and dedicated volunteers. Congratulations and thank you to the organizing committee on hosting such a successful event. We'll have more coverage from CCYA in the October Banner. Speaking of the October Banner, we've pushed the advertising deadline back a little to give consignors a bit more time to capture photos of their fall female consignments. As always, if you'd like Justin or me to stop by and take some updated pasture photos, don't hesitate to give either of us a call. Have a safe, productive, and bountiful harvest. Have a great day!

AS I SEE IT
Maman, comment haute est l'eau? Robbie Chomik

magnifique exploitation Lady Fane Charolais.

Maritimes Charolais Association Summer Tour
The Maritimes Charolais Association leaned on Helge & Candace By to come out of retirement and plan a tour of the Maritimes in the days leading up to the CCA AGM. Most of the group arrived on Sunday and did the complete tour, while others joined in later in the week. We were fortunate enough to see some great Charolais cattle at CES Charolais, Golden Brook Farm, Lady Fane Charolais and Balamore Farms. It was not all work and no play. The group had the pleasure of a wine tasting, deep sea fishing (where some guests caught more fish than others) and a strawberry farm tour where some sampling was done. And the most thrilling of all was the Tidal Bore rafting on the Bay of Fundy. We had the opportunity to see lots of beautiful scenery along the way between stops and enjoy plenty of seafood meals as well.

This year the ACA decided to hold a Summer Field Day & BBQ southwest of Olds, AB to go along with their special meeting instead of their annual summer tour. The change was well received by those in attendance. A nice crowd was able to appreciate the hospitality from the ACA and tour hosts Harvie Ranching. NEWS
Getting Ready for Fall By Tyler Fulton, CCA President
It’s hard to believe that we are already heading into fall. Summer presents many opportunities for CCA to advance our advocacy and policy priorities through meetings, events, and often hosting MPs, Senators and Ministers on tours. The timing of this column presents an opportunity to share an update on achievements this year and priorities for fall. In April, we launched an aggressive campaign to raise awareness about trade negotiations between Canada and Mercosur that could see a massive increase in imports of Mercosur beef. Mercosur is the Southern Common Market (called MERCOSUR for its Spanish initials). It is a South American economic and political trade bloc established in 1991 and comprised of Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay. Increased imports would incentivize beef production on the other side of the world, disincentive cattle production and herd rebuilding in Canada, and would have no impact on the price of beef in Canada. At a time when the federal government is investing in food security, increased trade with Mercosur that would allow increased beef imports does not make sense. If you have not already joined our campaign, there is still time! Thank you to everyone who visited www.cattle.ca/mercosur and sent a message to their MP, Minister of International Trade, the Honourable Maninder Sidhu and Prime Minister Mark Carney. Throughout the summer we have seen producers share information to increase consumer awareness, and we appreciate your help. Trade is always a priority area of focus for CCA given the export-heavy nature of our industry. For the last 44
year, we focused on the CanadaUnited States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA) review, ensuring governments are fully informed on the integration of the North American beef cattle market and the importance of continued free trade. We continue to support a tariff-free integrated North American beef and cattle market. That includes making ourselves available to negotiators to answer questions as they arise during the review process. There was positive trade news to celebrate in January when Canadian beef access to China was restored after being wrongfully shut out in 2021. The Chinese market presents significant opportunities to add carcass value as the majority of exports are for cuts that are not desired in North America. Following our AGM in March, we announced that we would convene a Task Force to work for producers on a risk-based, industry-led approach to disease preparedness and emergency management. The task force was announced in early June; see www. cattle.ca/beef-cattle-traceability-taskforce-is-established-immediatelyassessing-opportunities-andbarriers-to-traceability for details if you missed the announcement. It is important to reiterate that CCA genuinely recognizes the importance of traceability for the industry. We need to have readily analyzable data that allows a rapid and effective disease investigation. Our ability to contain and eliminate disease, and prove our return to a diseasefree status, is what will re-open negotiations with trading partners in the event of an outbreak. We understand that an effective system is both simple to understand and easy to participate in. CCA and the Alberta Beef Charolais Banner • August 2026
Producers (ABP) also announced in June that we have reached an interim participation agreement following motions passed in principle by the CCA at our Annual General Meeting. The agreement follows CCA’s agreement-in-principle to bylaw reforms recommended by the Provincial Working Group, which includes representatives from each of CCA’s provincial member organizations. These recommendations will be presented again for approval at CCA’s SemiAnnual Meeting in August. As we head into fall, feedback from the Beef Cattle Code of Practice Public Comment Period is being reviewed and assessed. Thank you to everyone who took time to participate and share input. This document describing how beef cattle are cared for and handled is an important resource for producers, policymakers, the public, the value chain and animal welfare and enforcement agencies looking to gauge industry standards for beef cattle production in Canada. The Code Committee is now reviewing all feedback received and we anticipate the new Code will be released in early 2027. If you did not participate in the comment period, the next Code review will take place five years after new draft Code is released, likely in 2032. Another topic that is top of mind as we head into fall is Business Risk Management programs and sufficient supports. CCA had many opportunities to share concerns and ideas with Members of Parliament and advocate for the industry at the Calgary Stampede and the FederalProvincial-Territorial (FPT) Ag Ministers meeting in Halifax. The 60-day public comment period for proposed Regulations Amending ... continued on page 46

The 63rd Annual General Meeting for the Saskatchewan Charolais Association was held on Thursday, June 11th, at The Willows Club, Saskatoon, SK. The morning started with golf open to any attendees, followed by the meeting with supper and the Sask Royal Sale to follow. Dale Weinbender, Canora, remains as President of the SCA Board of Directors. Both Justin Cay, Kinistino, and Scott Sunderland, Saint Front, remain as 1st and 2nd Vice Presidents, respectively. In board elections, Scott Sunderland and Duncan Spenst were re-elected to the board of directors. Mason Beck, Milestone and Cassidi Elder, Coronach, were also elected to the board. The SCA thanked Wacey McCaw and Michele Bomok for their time and efforts with the board. The 2025 Financial statement showed a net profit of $61,037. This is largely due to hosting the players club event at Agribition last fall. The association remains stable with just over $120,000 in its savings account. The largest expense was their Annual Meeting Expense of $12,689. The SCA hosted the Players Club Show in conjunction with the National Show at Canadian Western
Saskatchewan Charolais AGM Agribition this past year. New for that year was mandating that PA Test results be publicized for voting members during the players club show. The rule was well accepted by the players club members. Congratulations to Blanchette Ranching on winning the $50,000 jackpot with BRL Nobleman 504N. Plans are in motion for Agribition this fall, where the show will be judged by Garth Rancier, Rancier Simmentals, Killam, AB.
The 4-H & Youth account drew over $4,306 in expenses. This investment provides DQ Gift Cards to 4-H members exhibiting Charolais calves to further incentivise junior to start or continue showing Charolaisinfluenced animals. This also funds a prize for 4-H members who exhibited a Charolais-influenced calf that was named grand or reserve champion animal at their 4-H region. The SCA has yet to announce next year’s location.

GETTING READY FOR FALL, CONTINUED FROM PAGE 44 Certain Regulations Relating to Harmonization of the Enhanced Feed Ban ends September 9. After years of ongoing advocacy, CCA and the Canadian Meat Council issued a joint news release sharing that we are encouraged by the proposed amendments to Canada's specified risk material (SRM) requirements, published in Canada Gazette Part I
46
in July. The proposed changes better align Canada with the science-based, negligible BSE risk status it has held since 2021—the same status held by the United States. Canada requires about 57 kilograms of SRM removal per carcass versus 3 kilograms in the U.S. These outdated requirements cost our industry an estimated $31.7 million annually. We are hopeful

60 Years of Charolais in Canada Over the last 60 years, Charolais cattle have transformed the Canadian beef industry. Imported directly from France in the late 1960s, the breed revolutionized crossbreeding and forever changed commercial beef production across the country. Today, Charolais is recognized as Canada's premier terminal sire, valued for rapid growth, exceptional red meat yield, feed efficiency, and the ability to thrive in Canada's demanding climate.
1960s–1970s:
The European Invasion
The Canadian Charolais story began in 1967 following the establishment of a quarantine station at Grosse Île, Quebec, allowing the first major importations of French Charolais cattle. At the time, British breeds such as Hereford and Angus dominated the beef industry, and many producers were skeptical of these large white cattle. It didn't take long for commercial cattlemen to recognize what Charolais genetics could do. Charolais bulls dramatically increased weaning weights, growth rates, and carcass yield when crossed on British cows. Demand exploded, and elite breeding stock often brought prices ranging from $10,000 to $50,000, making Charolais one of the hottest breeds in Canada. The 1970s quickly became the golden era of expansion. Charolais-cross calves gained a reputation for adding pounds and producing lean, heavy-muscled carcasses. Commercial producers embraced the breed, while performance recording and computerized pedigree programs began modernizing breed improvement across North America.

The 1980s: Commercial Dominance
By the 1980s, Charolais had firmly established itself as one of Canada's leading beef breeds. The focus shifted from simply producing larger cattle to building a more balanced and profitable animal. Breeders emphasized structural soundness, carcass quality, maternal ability, and improved calving ease while maintaining the exceptional growth the breed was known for. In 1984, the Canadian Charolais Association introduced Charolais Connection, a publication dedicated to helping commercial cattlemen better understand the economic advantages of Charolais genetics. The decade also saw growing interest in Black Charolais genetics, allowing producers to combine the muscle and performance of Charolais with the black hide and maternal traits desired in many commercial markets. Youth involvement flourished during this period as junior shows and provincial events encouraged the next generation of Charolais breeders.

The 1990s: The Polled Revolution
The 1990s marked a turning point for the breed. One of the biggest changes was the rapid transition toward polled genetics. Through careful breeding programs, Canadian breeders dramatically reduced the number of AD horned cattle while preserving the breed's outstanding growth and muscle. Commercial cattlemen increasingly relied on Charolais bulls because Charcross calves consistently produced heavier weaning weights, faster gains in the feedlot, and outstanding carcass performance. The Canadian Charolais Youth Association continued expanding during this decade, providing leadership opportunities for young breeders while strengthening the future of the breed. At the same time, Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs) became a valuable selection tool, allowing breeders to make more informed genetic decisions than ever before.

The 2000s: Technology Meets Tradition
The new millennium brought significant advances in performance testing and genetic evaluation. Canadian breeders increasingly relied on EPDs to improve calving ease, growth, maternal traits, and carcass merit while maintaining the muscle and performance Charolais are famous for. The industry also shifted away from producing extremely large-framed cattle. Instead, breeders selected for moderate-framed, structurally sound, efficient cattle capable of performing under real commercial conditions. Char-cross calves became increasingly popular throughout Canadian feedlots because they consistently delivered exceptional feed conversion and superior lean red meat yield. Bull sales throughout Alberta and Saskatchewan remained strong as commercial producers continued investing in proven Charolais genetics.

55
The 2010s: The Genomic Era
The Canadian Charolais Association celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2010, marking five decades of remarkable progress since the breed's introduction into Canada. DNA testing and genomic evaluations became valuable tools for breeders, significantly improving the accuracy of EPDs for young cattle. Producers could now make better breeding decisions earlier in an animal's life. The breed continued improving calving ease and temperament while maintaining its exceptional growth and muscle. By the end of the decade, polled genetics had become the preferred choice for most Canadian breeders, simplifying management while maintaining the breed's performance advantages. Across Western Canada, Char-cross calves consistently topped sales thanks to their ability to add pounds, hybrid vigor, and profitability.

The 2020s: A Global Leader
Today, Canadian Charolais genetics are respected around the world. Joint Canadian and American genetic evaluations continue improving selection accuracy while giving breeders access to some of the industry's most advanced genetic information. Modern Charolais cattle have come a long way from the large, sometimes difficult cattle first imported from France. Decades of careful selection have produced cattle with improved calving ease, quieter dispositions, greater feed efficiency, and excellent structural soundness while preserving the breed's signature muscle and rapid growth. The move toward polled genetics has also been one of the breed's greatest success stories, with the majority of registered cattle now naturally hornless. Canadian Charolais continue setting records in the sale ring, with elite herd sires commanding impressive prices and Canadian genetics being exported around the world.

More 2020s:
Looking Back—and Looking Ahead
Over the past 60 years, Charolais breeders have transformed a rugged European breed into one of the most efficient and profitable terminal sires in the beef industry. Through careful selection, modern technology, and a commitment to continuous improvement, today's Charolais offer outstanding growth, excellent feed efficiency, superior carcass quality, and improved calving ease without sacrificing the traits that made the breed famous. From the first French imports in the 1960s to today's world-class genetics, Charolais has earned its place as a cornerstone of Canada's commercial beef industry. As genetic technology continues to advance, the future of the breed looks as bright as ever, ensuring Charolais will remain a driving force in Canadian beef production for generations to come. 58
