It has been an interesting summer with weather patterns across this vast country being from too dry in a big chunk of the prairie provinces, to too wet across parts of eastern Canada. Cattle producers will have to get creative on their winter feed stuff to keep the costs of maintaining the herd over winter affordable. Grain and straw, green feed, screening pellets and many other things can and will have to be used in place of very high hay prices. At least the prices are still very good if some extra selling down in numbers has to be done.

The Canadian Charolais Association Annual General Meeting was held in Manitoba in June. The Manitoba Charolais breeders led by Shawn and Tanya Airey did a great job in putting together a fun pen show and evening at HTA Charolais the day before the AGM. A big tent, that was good shade during the hot afternoon and a big umbrella during a down pour that evening, worked great. An excellent meal, and live music by Juno nominated recording artist Del Barber made for a fabulous evening. A semen and baking auction raised more than enough money to cover all the costs that had to be covered by the association, showing that with a little work these types of events can be very affordable. With a good crowd attending the meetings the next day, it was a fun couple of days.

Something I found interesting from the business side of the CCA meetings is that the board has invested less than $30,000 on

Genomics to this point. I have had breeders express concern that we were spending too much money on this and what is the point. Well we haven’t invested much at all and I feel it is very important to the genetic advancements of the Charolais breed down the road. The board has taken a very cautious approach with much of the initial steps being done by Dorian Garrick at Iowa State University as research projects. We are combining our DNA work with the American International Charolais Association to build numbers to have a more accurate Genomically Enhanced EPD when the first one is produced, hopefully in the not too distant future. Also when transferring to the SNP technology from the micro satellite or blood work process used before, this also was funded through government programs. Along with the work that Genome Canada has been doing on all cattle breeders behaves we are moving down the path quite nicely.

What GE EPD will do is just give a higher accuracy to the EPD we now already have. You won’t see any difference in how the numbers are expressed, they will just have a higher accuracy number.

Whole Herd Enrollment numbers look like they will be up this year which is also very positive for the Charolais breed coming off the best bull sale season ever. The buzz in the industry is very positive for Charolais at all levels. Make sure you are doing your part to promote the breed in your area and province to continue this growth.

The last week of June saw Canada host the World Charolais Technical conference with the acceptance of our

cattle being very positive. With breeders from eight countries besides Canada, it was a fun, educational and well worthwhile project for all Canadian breeders. A complete report is later in this issue. We hope our coverage gives you the feeling that you were there and saw much of what we presented to the international breeders and association personnel.

We had lots of feedback from breeders across the country following some of us on Twitter during the event. I also know that many of the out of country breeders were posting on Facebook some of the pictures and happenings with favourable responses by breeders back in their home countries.

Social media is definitely being used more each year by farmers around the world. It is becoming a very valuable marketing tool and if you aren’t utilizing it yet, you need to look into it. There are many different options and forms, but at this point Twitter, Facebook and Instagram seem to be the most used in the industry.

Well I am now off to one of the fun events of the year, which is the CCYA Conference and Show. By the time you read this Craig and I will be starting to picture for fall sales and working on the Fall Connection and October Banner. If we can be of any assistance with your marketing this fall or preparing for next spring’s bull sales, please let us know.

I don’t normally put any humour in these editorials but I saw a line that I couldn’t resist passing on. Even duct tape can’t fix stupid… but it can muffle the sound.

Les conditions météorologiques ont été très variable à travers le pays ce printemps, très sec dans les prairies et très humide dans l’est du Canada. Les producteurs de bovins devront faire preuve de créativité l’hiver prochain pour garder leurs coûts d’entretien le plus bas possible, en utilisant du grain, de la paille et de la moulée en cubes pour remplacer le foin dont les prix sont très élevés. Au moins les prix pour les animaux sont encore bons.

L’Assemblée Générale Annuelle de L’ACC s’est tenue au Manitoba, elle était supervisée par Shawn et Tanya Airey, qui ont fait un excellent travail pour monter un spectacle et une grande tente qui a servi de parasol l’après midi et de parapluie pendant la soirée. Un excellent repas nous a été servi et la musique de l’artiste Del Barber un nominé au (JUNO) a été très apprécié. Un encan de semence et de pâtisserie a rapporté assez pour couvrir les frais de l’évènement cela prouve qu’on peut monter ce genre d’évènement et le rendre abordable. Les deux jours ont été très intéressants.

Une autre chose que j’ai trouvé intéressante c’est que l’ACC a investi moins de $30,000.00 à ce jour dans la Génomique. Certains craignaient que l’ACC dépense trop d’argent dans

cette recherche. Il est très important de faire ces investissements pour le progrès de la race Charolaise. Les directeurs ont adopté une approche très prudente, avec plusieurs étapes dirigés par Dorian Garrick de l’université de l’état de l’Iowa sur ce projet de recherche. Nous continuons notre travail avec l’American International Association Charolais à construire des EPD génomiquement améliorés dans un avenir rapproché.

Qu’est-ce que le GEEPD c’est tout simplement une plus grande précision des EPD que nous utilisons présentement, vous ne verrez pas la différence, ils seront tout simplement plus précis.

L’enrôlement n’a jamais été aussi bon que cette année dû à la meilleure saison de ventes de taureaux. Le buzz de l’industrie bovine est très positive pour la race charolaise à tous les niveaux. Assurez-vous que vous faites votre part pour promouvoir la race dans votre région et province pour quelle continue sa croissance.

La dernière semaine de juin, le Canada a accueilli la Conférence Mondiale Technique du Charolais et notre bétail a été coté très positivement. Avec des éleveurs de huit pays cela a été très amusant et éducatif pour nos éleveurs Canadiens. Nous espérons que la

couverture de cet évènement a été très positive pour les éleveurs internationaux et pour le personnel de l.ACC. Nous avons eu beaucoup de commentaires d’éleveurs de partout au pays sur Twitter lors de l’évènement. Je sais aussi que plusieurs ont publiés sur Facebook de retour dans leur pays d’origine. Les médias sociaux sont très utilisés par les agriculteurs dans le monde entier.

Ils deviennent un outil de marketing très précieux et si vous ne l’utilisez pas encore il serait grand temps de le faire. Il y a beaucoup d’options différentes et de formes, mais à ce jour les plus utilisés dans l’industrie sont Twitter,Facebook et Instagram.

Et bien maintenant j’en suis rendu à l’un des évènements les plus amusants de l’année soit le CCYA. Au moment où vous lirez ces lignes Craig et moi seront à préparer la publicité des ventes dans le Charolais Connection et le Banner d’Octobre.

Lungworms Roy Lewis DVM

Every year in mid to later summer we see a few outbreaks with lungworms on pasture. This is especially true if the year has been wet where the life cycle of the lungworm can be completed. This year is starting out dry, but much like we see with Anthrax outbreaks, in drier years where cattle can now pasture low lying areas we will see flare ups of this parasitic disease as well.

The life cycle of the lungworm (dictyocaulus viviparous) starts with the animals picking up infective larvae off the grass. The larvae are then ingested and migrate through the intestine into the bloodstream and end up in the lungs as adults.

They cause damage to the air sacs in the lungs and the adults live in the bronchial tubes. The adults produce a tremendous number of eggs which are coughed up and swallowed where they on passage through the intestinal tract change to larvae by the time they are passed in the manure. The entire cycle takes about one month. These larvae are one of the ways veterinarians can diagnose the condition by examining a manure sample. It takes a different test than looking for the intestinal worm eggs.

The baerman technique is done on a handful of fresh manure and takes a few hours to run. We have samples arrive in the morning so we can give you an answer the same day. Most clinics are set up to run this test in house. The finding of even several larval lungworm is significant and necessitates deworming so if worried have several samples checked as levels will vary.

Other than checking manure samples cattle can be checked clinically or autopsies can be done if any have died. Clinically we may see cattle doing poorly in spite of good grass conditions. There is often a number with very prominent 16

coughing. Some may have varying degrees of diarrhea. With herd involvement there is always great variation with some doing very poorly others just a bit rough haired and still others looking almost normal. Generally the younger cattle (calves and yearlings) are most susceptible as any previous exposure yields some immunity. If we listen to the lungs there is often evidence of emphysema caused by the lungworm larvae damaging the air sacs. We may even get a secondary bacterial or viral pneumonia from the stress the lungs are under. Some of these lung changes if severe enough will not reverse so even if treatment is successful a poor doing animal with reduced lung capacity is the result.

With autopsies an experienced vet will notice changes to the lungs and actual adult lungworms can be found in the bronchial tubes and trachea. It is very easy to see how lung capacity has been diminished.

The lungworm can overwinter in our Canadian winters but most of the exposure comes from carrier cattle shedding the larvae on the pastures.

Generally then you will get buildup by midsummer in areas that are affected. If a clinical diagnosis is made in the summer we sometimes have the dilemma of how to treat if cattle cannot be easily rounded up.

The drug fenbendazole (safeguard) is very effective against lungworms. It comes as an oral suspension, crumble or concentrated feed additive. The product can either be mixed in grain and fed in feeders as a one time treatment or fed in reduced amounts over three to six days or be scripted into the minerals by your veterinarian. This is because this is not an approved method of administration. This ensures most of the cattle will get it. Most cattle young or old consume minerals at their leisure. This product if put out just before maximum exposure to lungworm (that appears to be around Charolais Banner â&#x20AC;˘ August 2015

July first in northern Alberta) this goes a long way to reducing the incidence. The safeguard is mixed in with many assumptions. We assume adult cattle will eat 30 to 60 grams of mineral per day and that all cattle will eat minerals at least every couple days. Some cattle get over treated but at least there is a very good likelihood most cattle will get treated and reduce contamination for the rest or subsequent animals that may get reintroduced. On average 8090 percent of the cattle get enough to clear the lungworms. Again to go in the minerals you need a veterinary prescription. The added benefit here is by treating for lungworms you are also treating for other internal parasitic worms so both gains and feed efficiency improves as well.

When treating clinical cases the symptoms such as coughing or respiratory problems will actually increase for a few days after treatment. This is because all the dead worms need to be coughed up and swallowed. The killing of all the adult worms may cause a reaction but the animal must be dewormed so you have to treat. Any pneumonia complications may need to be treated with antibiotics at this time. Pastures that have had previous problems on are the ones we really concentrate on.

Over a few years the treatment possibly can be phased out but always be on the lookout for the clinical signs reappearing and we want to keep treating the internal parasites anyways.

Bison are very susceptible to lungworms and the same safeguard can be used but under a veterinary prescription. The endectocides if given are used at the same rate as cattle. Horses can get the cattle lungworms as well but all you will see is clinical evidence as they are a dead end host so no larvae will be shed in the manure.

Canadian Genetics Excelling in Norway Beef Maxx Award Fat Lane av Veistad, a Charolais bull raised by Erling Gresseth of Veistad Charolais, Stjodal, Norway, was named the top beef bull of all breeds in Norway this spring. Fat Lane is from a Canadian embryo sired by BXB Dateline Son 65R, out of a CS Mango 256M daughter from JMB Charolais, Brookdale, MB. The Beef Maxx prize is a competition between all breeds for progeny tested bulls.

These bulls have at least 500 progeny from crossing with Norwegian Red (dairy cows) and beef cows. They need to be okay for calving ease and then they are evaluated on three factors: 1. Feed Efficiency 2. Average Daily Gain 3.

Beef Capacity. The first measure is of the bull himself in a performance test where they measure what they eat both of concentrate and sileage. The other two categories are on the progeny.

A record price for a beef bull was established this spring in Norway when Erling Gresseth, Veistad Charolais, Stjodal, sold a 12 month old, full brother to Winn Mans Lanza 610S, for $180,000 NOK (Norwegian Krone) (about $30,000 Canadian). Andreas Hansen Brandvold of Osen purchased this outstanding bull, Total Balanz av Veistad which was raised from an embryo purchased in Canada.

Anytime a postmortem is done especially at pasture have the lungs checked. The lungs will often look overinflated yet still quite pink and they often have areas of emphysema in them. If doing any butchering we 18

always want to check the internal organs as I know of several instances where butchers alerted the farmers to evidence of lungworms in their herds even though there may have been very little clinical evidence of it. Bring several manure samples into your veterinarian if you suspect it and follow their recommendations for Charolais Banner â&#x20AC;˘ August 2015

treatment if it is diagnosed. You then know that pasture has lungworm and treatment in subsequent years is generally highly recommended by your veterinarian if continuing to utilize that pasture. By being diligent and checking manure samples if suspicious we can go a long way to keeping lungworms out of our herds.

Highlights from the Annual General Meeting They call it “Friendly Manitoba” for a reason! Charolais and Industry enthusiasts met in Brandon, Manitoba for the Canadian Charolais Association’s 2015 Annual General Meeting on June 12 and 13.

We were greeted with smiles and wonderful hospitality at HTA Charolais in Rivers, MB on Friday, July 12 for the Manitoba Pen Show and Picnic. Twenty-eight pens were exhibited and Brian Coughlin, Cobden, ON sorted through the entries to name his Champions for the day. The Pen Show was followed up with a pasture tour and dinner. We met on Saturday, July 13 at the Victoria Inn, Brandon, MB for the Annual Meeting. The meeting was well attended by members, associates and guests who engaged in positive, productive interaction.

Active membership of the CCA is holding strong at 700+ and we continue to maintain a healthy 20,000+ breeding females on our annual Whole Herd Enrollments.

The Association remains in a solid financial position because of our maintained revenues, strong memberships and enrollments, as well as optimizing efficiencies. The CCA realized a profit in 2014 and

particulars are shown with the Kenway Mack Slusarchuk Stewart Review Engagement included in the Annual Report. Under the guidance of ATB Investment Services the CCA Board continues to invest the Association’s finances wisely.

The Canadian Charolais Association has taken a more active role with our digital footprint engaging thousands of Charolais supporters from around the world not only through our refreshed website but also through social media, Twitter and Facebook.

Genomics and how they relate to our herd was discussed openly; the CCA has taken a conservative approach in moving forward with incorporating genomics into our evaluation and in doing so the founding technologies have improved and advanced. As an Association we have invested minimal amounts of funding over the last two years researching our most appropriate course of action.

The CCA congratulates Brian Coughlin of Cobden, Ontario, on being elected president and welcomes new board members Mike Elder of Coronach, SK, and Kasey Phillips of Waskatenau, AB. Newly elected President Brian Coughlin shares that “It is an honour to take on the role of president. I look forward to collaborating with members of the board to continue the good work of our predecessors, and working for Charolais breeders across Canada.”

Les amateurs de Charolais et de l’industrie du bœuf se sont réunis à Brandon (Manitoba) pour l’assemblée générale annuelle 2015 de l’association canadienne les 12 et 13 juin derniers et ils ont été témoins de cette promesse.

Vendredi, le 12 juillet, nous avons 30

été accueillis avec à bras ouverts chez HTA Charolais à Rivers pour le concours de groupes d’animaux et le pique-nique. Vingt-huit groupes ont été évaluéspar le juge M. Brian Coughlin de Cobden, Ontario. Le jugement des groupes a été suivi d’une tournée des pâturages et un souper. Une levée de fond pour l’Association Charolais du Manitoba a terminé la soirée par l’entremise d’unevente aux enchères de semence.

Les membres de l’association ainsi que d’autres invités spéciaux se sont rencontrés samedi 13 juillet à l’Auberge Victoria à Brandon (Manitoba) pour la réunion annuelle.

L’adhésion active de l’Association Canadienne Charolais (ACC) est maintenant à plus de 700 membres et nous continuons un enrôlement de troupeau solide avec 20 000 + femelles reproductricesau dernier compte. L’Association demeure dans

une position financière enviable soutenue pardes revenues stables qui proviennent de l’adhésion et des enrôlements, ainsi qu’une efficacité optimale des opérations quotidiennes au bureau. Le bilan financier de l’association a été préparé par la firme KenwayMack Slusarchuk Stewart et se trouve dans le cahier des rapports annuels. Sous la direction des Services d’investissement ATB, votre Conseil d’administration continue d’investir positivement les excès de recette de l’Association.

Au cours de l’année 2014, l’association canadienne Charolais a assumé un rôle plus visibleau niveau des empreintes digitales, en engageant des milliers de partisans Charolais de partout dans le monde non seulement par le biais du site internet maintenant actualisé, mais aussi par le biais de médias sociaux comme Twitter et Facebook.

Le sujet de la génomique et comment elle se rapporte à notre cheptel national, a été discutée ouvertement lors de l’assemblée. L’ACC a adopté une approche prudente tout en se déplaçant vers l’avant avec l’intégration de la génomique dans les évaluations génétiques et, ce faisant, les technologies fondatrices se sont améliorées et odernisé. L’association a investi des sommes minimes d’argent au cours des deux dernières années, toujours à la recherche de la meilleure ligne de conduite pour le bénéfice maximum des membres.

L’ACC félicite Brian Coughlin de Cobden, Ontario, pour avoir été élu président et nous accueillons aussi des nouveaux membres au Conseil soit; Mike Elder de Coronach, SK et Kasey Phillips de Waskatenau, AB. our years ago, the Canadian Charolais Association requested permission from Charolais International to host the 2015 World Technical Conference. Since then, interest in the Canadian trip grew to a point where Canada requested the approval at the AGM in France to open the Technical to anyone that wished to attend, rather than the normal two delegates per country. The event was attended by 59 people from nine countries, including Canada.

From the buzz at the opening social on Monday, June 22, in Regina, we knew it was going to be a great trip. The people were excited to see one another again, meet new breeders and join in on the adventures planned for the week. The next morning everyone was at the bus early and the excitement continued as we made our first hour and a half drive across the Regina plains. Many questions about the crops, land prices, inputs and everything else farm related were put forth as is customary by farmers travelling in a different country.

The first stop on the tour was at Wilgenbusch Charolais. Many in the bus were excited to see their friends John and Brenda and their cattle. They were not disappointed. Being greeted with special edible cowboyhat-topped muffins and cherry tarts, the red and white Canadian theme was well received and those muffins where photographed by many before being consumed.

Craig and Tricia Wilgenbusch had about 30 cow/calf pairs on display in a large round pen with five herdbulls being displayed in adjoining pens outside the circle. The guests were thorough in their appraisal of the cattle and interest was expressed in live animals and embryos.

Wilgenbuschs served a beautiful prime rib lunch with Charolais beef from Western Prime Meats, a packing plant John and a partner built at the start of BSE. This was very well received as good beef is the end result of our industry. Canada markets beef at a much younger age

than many European countries and the quality of the product was evident.

Being well fed, we set off to find dessert! Beck Farms had a special treat for the group as Donna had baked pies and Gary had made home-made ice cream for our guests. The tent they had set up to serve the special treats was welcomed shade from a very hot day.

The cattle on display started with the Beck childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s (Mason, Jorja, Kaden and Kylie) 4-H projects. For many European countries, this type of youth organization is uncommon and seeing the kids there to explain their program and talk about their animals was beneficial.

Wade and Cynthia Beck also had pens of cow/calf pairs on display and people were welcome to hop in the back of a truck and tour the cows in the adjacent pasture. We were in very dry conditions at this time and many of the guests were surprised to see the cattle holding their condition so well. When they saw what native prairie looked like this year, they had trouble comprehending the nutritional value of short-grass country and its ability to sustain livestock.

Being fully and completely well-fed and watered, we ventured on to Moose Jaw to the Temple Gardens Mineral Spa for supper and a free evening. Many utilized the healing waters to shake off the remnants of being cramped in a plane for hours to get here. Others ventured across the street to try their luck at the casino.

Whichever they chose, they were up the next morning ready to start the day and participate in the opportunities it provided.

Wednesday started with the upbeat, dynamic presentation by Lyndon Carlson, Senior Vice-President of Marketing for FCC. Lyndon discussed the very favorable position agriculture is in today and how producers can contribute to the positive marketing of their industry. His vision for the inception of Ag More Than Ever has grown beyond his expectations and is starting to have a following outside North America.

As this was a Technical conference there were presentations from the participating countries to update the rest of the world on what they are working on in their countries and sharing concerns of agriculture in their parts.

The Technical Conference at the Temple Gardens Mineral Spa

Manager Mel Reekie gave Canada's presentation with an indepth update on the Association and Canadian cattle industry.

Cherilyn Nagel then gave a presentation on behalf of Farm & Food Care Saskatchewan. Cherilyn farms with her husband in southern Saskatchewan and continued on the theme of being proactive as farmers to the consumers. Consumers want healthy, safe, environmentally friendly food and she told how we should educate the consumer that we are doing this to the best of our ability.

The Wednesday morning sessions ended with a presentation from David Benson of the British Charolais Society talking about the steps they have taken to insure the integrity of their herdbook with relevance to age, birth weights, etc.

These events are always a blend of meetings, cattle and culture. The afternoon started with a stop at the Tunnels of Moose Jaw to enjoy the escapades of Al Capone and the Bootleggers of Moose Jaw’s colourful history. Many of the guests enjoyed

this tour so much, they chose to see the second tunnel tour Passage to Fortune.

The afternoon concluded with a visit to White Cap Charolais to learn about their effluent water irrigation project with the city of Moose Jaw. The drought this year displayed a dramatic difference between the effluent irriagation crops and the non-irrigation crops. The interest in the program was evident and the desire for such a useful way of handling water treatment was enviable.

We also had the opportunity to look at some cow/bull calf pairs and bred heifers on pasture at White Cap and many remarked on the frame size of the herd. The last time many of these people saw Canadian cattle was at the 2006 World Congress when the show ring featured smaller framed animals. They presumed we were still stuck there and were excited to see livestock they could utilize in their home countries.

When we went to the farm, Rosso Charolais and Elder Charolais also had cattle on display. The pens were busy with many showing interest in

the genetics. Johnny and Darwin Rosso had a special treat for the guests as they were serving prairie oyster appetizers. Most everyone was brave enough to try them and they definitely created some excitement.

Supper that night was a venture into the heritage of many Canadians with a feast of cabbage rolls and perogies and a variety of salads. The trip was planned to offer a varied menu to keep people eating and entertained. It was very well received and the evening couldn’t have been better. We were definitely gifted with terrific weather and the only thing good about a drought – no mosquitoes. We were able to sit out and enjoy the networking opportunity.

We returned to Moose Jaw for the last night at the Spa and enjoyed the freedom to choose the water or the casino; some managed to do both.

Thursday started with a presentation on genomics by Dr John Crowley who works with the Canadian Beef Breeds Council and has been very involved with the University of Alberta and Delta continued on page 40

Genomics. This was a great, easy to understand presentation that showed where we in Canada are in developing Genomically Enhanced EPD in all breeds.

Colin Rex the new Breed Development Officer for the Charolais Society of Australia talked about the performance testing trials that they have been working on as well as an overview of the society.

Neil Orth, Executive Vice-President of the American International Charolais Association and Dr. Rex Ricketts explained a new project they are working on in the United States being a multibreed genetics service and registry under one roof. It was very interesting and they are down the path quite a ways in the formation of the plan.

presentation on the country and the industry with some genetic lessons thrown in.

The alternate program for the morning was a tour of the historical mansion Greyson House, the home of Fifth Avenue Collection. The tour included more of the colourful history of Moose Jaw that prominent names in the community would not have wanted known. Enough time has passed to afford people the safety of telling it like it was and how some of the most rich and prominent collected their fortunes. Then they opened the doors to the jewelry collection and told us to have fun.

And that we did! We tried on a multitude of fine jewelry, shopped for gifts and ourselves. They were so easy going and helpful we had to

hurry to get back for lunch! The stop took far longer than anticipated and it was decided that no pictures would be allowed. If there were no pictures, there was no evidence!

As soon as we finished lunch, we were on the bus heading to Saskatoon. We had a good laugh as we travelled down and up the Qu’Appelle Valley and actually experienced the first hill of the trip.

Many were excited to tour A. Sparrow Farms as they have seen their bull sale reports in the Charolais Banner magazine and on the website news for years. They were not disappointed. The tour through the herd was very well received. Interest in buying genetics was again expressed. Many took the opportunity to walk through the yard and facilities and also see some of the grain operation.

The evening ended with barbecued burgers and all of the trimmings.

Everyone was quite jovial and refreshed as we continued to North Battleford for the night. A few tried their luck at the casino here and were very successful! continued on page 42

Friday was a big day, but a good day that became a highlight of the trip for many. We toured the Roy Berg Kinsella Research Farm where there is a Charolais herd, an Angus herd and a composite herd that are used by the University of Alberta for research. They are also doing extensive Residual Feed Intake testing using the GrowSafe systems. This will be the basis for the Charolais RFI Genetically Enhanced EPD. A presentation on the program was made before we went and saw the system first hand. As well a very elaborate handling and chute system was demonstrated by the staff at the station.

Under the time restraints of the day, we had pizza for lunch on the bus. Team Canada (Mel Reekie, Craig Scott, Andre Steppler, Candace and Helge) served it so efficiently we had everyone fed and beverages refreshed well before our next stop. Anders Wiklert from Sweden stood on the bus to request a round of applause for the fast food that was good. He couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t believe how well it went.

We rolled into the Ponoka Stampede & Rodeo just a little late for the start of the rodeo, but we saw all the events, which was excellent. Rodeos are illegal in Europe, so this was a first for many.

Following the rodeo, we had made arrangements to visit the stall of Rae Croteau Jr. in the the chuck wagon racing stalling area. Rae, who was stalled beside Troy Dorchester, was very open about discussing the ins and outs of racing. They fielded questions on all aspects of the sport and the animals. Many stopped to have their picture taken in wagons and some were treated to 11 x 17 posters of Troy Dorchester in racing action. They were thrilled with the experience and we were impressed with their willingness to share their time with us on a race day.

Supper in the Big Top Tent on the grounds was exceptional and everyone wished they could eat more, but our capacities were maxed and it was time to get our seats for the Chuck Wagon races. They did not disappoint! The excitement was evident as we cheered for Troy and Rae, although their success was not to come that night.

Leaving the arena, we had many positive comments about the day and how wonderful it was. No matter what our guests thought the day was going to be like, we surpassed their expectations and there were many questions on the bus to Red Deer about things they saw and we were able to share tidbits of information to enhance the experience.

Saturday was the day of the Alberta Charolais Association Field Day and our guests enjoyed viewing the cattle on display by Alberta breeders that accepted the opportunity to participate. The trip was drawing to a close and there was starting to be a building anticipation to buy genetics from Canada. Everyone was so pleased with the trip and the cattle, they just wanted some to take home. Some good interest and business was done at this stop.

The barbecued beef ribs and roast beef at the field day were exceptional and there started to be talk about personal ADG on the trip.

From Bowden we bused to Cattlelands Feedyards near Strathmore and were given a very informative tour of the large feedlot by William Torres the manager of the Bull Evaluation and Cattle and Research projects. This feedlot does many research projects for a vast array of companies along with specific testing for breeders and breeds. He explained their handling and tagging systems they use along with how the whole operation runs. Many had not seen a feedlot of this size so it was very impressive.

We arrived in Calgary ahead of schedule for a free evening following dinner. For many this seemed to consist of continuing the networking until closing time in the lounge.

Sunday morning started with a Sustainability presentation by Fawn Jackson. Fawn, a former Canadian Charolais Youth Association alumni, is the Manager of Enviornment and Sustainability for the Canadian Cattlemen's Association. Fawn has been around the world sitting in on beef round table meetings on these topics and explained what it means to cattle producers and how companies like McDonalds are wanting to source meat only from verified sustainable operations. It was very informative and will affect every cattle producer in the world at some stage.

The final country presentation was given by Anna Ingvar-Nilsson, a director on the Swedish Charolais Breed Improvement Committe on the association and testing that they are doing.

The technical portion of the Conference concluded with the Charolais International AGM which is featured in a separate article.

The alternative for the morning was the Calgary Zoo or shopping at the Chinook Centre. As it turned out, the Calgary Zoo was closed due to a power outage, which was unfortunate, but out of our control. No one seemed to mind and they found other ways to amuse themselves.

The afternoon started with a stop to shop at Cross Iron Mills Mall at Balzac. For many, this was their first opportunity to find things to take home. Shopping was successful for many, and for others it was an opportunity to visit, taste test the ice cream or local brew and people watch.

The final stop on the cattle part of the tour was at McLeod Livestock.

Rod, April, Colby and Megan did extensive amounts of landscaping to get ready for the day and things looked great. The tent was once again well received as the heat of summer was definitely upon us. Cold drinks

industry related people present.

The tour through the donor females and other pens inspired some of the international guests to pursue purchases.

The steak supper was exceptional and the buzz in the tent was indicative of the trip. The entire week was filled with discussion. The time spent on the bus went quickly and everyone enjoyed the scenery and/or the visiting.

The last day was a tourist day in Banff and the only disappointing weather of the week. We went up the gondola to find it overcast, hindering the beautiful views.

It didn’t seem to disappoint as it meant more time to shop around town on the last day. Many tested the Cows ice cream and picked up souvenirs. Some did the hike to the falls and many expressed interest in returning to Banff in the future.

The final banquet in Calgary ended with many thank yous, country gifts and farewells. We received many thanks from those who felt they didn’t know what we could have changed to improve the trip, everything went so well. We were pleased to show off the land we love, the exceptional cattle, the warmth of the people and a flavour of our lifestyle. We would like to thank the breeders that opened their doors to us and made the effort to make the tour great. Your work was very appreciated. We also want to thank all of the people who travelled to Canada to join us. You were terrific guests and gave us many wonderful memories as we saw Canada through your eyes. We hope you will return some day. Until then, we hope to see everyone at the World Charolais Congress in Mexico next April.

Charolais International AGM Charolais International Association,Coast Plaza Hotel Meeting Room, 28 June 2015, Calgary, AB, Canada President Helge By called the meeting to order. Minutes of 2014 Annual General Meeting in France were adopted as read.

Clement Perrodin presented the 2014 financial report. Clement Perrodin advised the Total Assets of Charolais International at year end $€95,836.71 Agreed to accept the financial report as presented.

Clement Perrodin advised of a request from Ecuador for membership of the Association.

Acceptance of this request was carried.

Colin Rex asked for clarification of the process of renewal of memberships. Clement Perrodin advised the meeting that all members are sent an invoice for membership fees for Charolais International. The financial year is the calendar year.

ICAR Meetings Helge By advised the meeting a genomics subcommittee had been formed in 2013 (Robert Williams of USA, Terence Ferrell of Australia, Nuala Hourihane of Ireland and Michel Baudet of France) however, several members of the subcommittee were no longer involved in Charolais.

Moved Ben Harman, Seconded Gregerio Farias Mateo that Anna Ingvar-Nilsson be appointed as Charolais International Representative to ICAR meetings.

Gregerio Farias Mateo proposed that access be granted to Mexico to update the current website with 2016 World Congress material while the new site is under construction. Anna Ingvar-Nilsson recommended the page be in English, French and Spanish. Ben Harman recommended that each country be responsible for translation into their language. Colin Rex recommended that if the site maintenance is moving worldwide then the labels of pages etc on the dashboard should be in English.

Future Events Helge By asked for nominations for hosting the 2017 World Technical Conference and the 2018 World Congress events. It was noted that Sweden had requested the rights to host the World Congress 2018.

Moved Neil Orth, Seconded David Benson to award the 2018 World Congress to Sweden. Carried Ben Harman recommended that Ireland be approached to host the 2017 Technical Conference. He advised that Ireland had a program in place to capture data into their genetic evaluation which would be of interest to many countries. Australia was also mentioned as a possibility.

Agreed to correspond with Ireland in regard to hosting the 2017 World Technical Conference. Carried Colin Rex reported that Australia would celebrate their 50th anniversary of Charolais in 2020 and the Australian Committee would discuss a proposal for the 2020 World Congress in the next month.

Harry Airey Inducted to Manitoba Agriculture Hall of Fame Harry Airey was born and raised on a farm in the RM of Daly. He attended Rivers High School, and following that he began farming with his father. In 1965 he took over the home farm and began his own mixed farming operation.

Two years later, Harry married Joan Bennett. Harry and Joan have three children, Raymond (Barb), Lori (Darcy) Heapy, and Shawn (Tanya) and several grandchildren.

In 1972, the Aireys bought their first Charolais cattle and their farm became known as HTA Charolais. They continue to raise cattle as well as farm over 3,000 acres of pasture, hay and grain land. HTA Charolais has shown and sold cattle across Canada and the United States. Their heifers have also been sold and shipped to Russia.

Charolais embryos exported to purebred breeders in Sweden produced a bull that was the only one allowed in Sweden’s herd book because of his quality.

Since the purchase of their first Charolais bull, Harry has been hooked on the breed because of its superior performance. In addition to becoming an AI technician to help promote and establish the breed in Manitoba, he also served for many years as Chair of the Breed Improvement Committee of the Canadian Charolais Association. Harry was actively involved in the Canadian Charolais Association from 1992 to 2001 and the Manitoba Charolais Association from 1986 to 2013.

Record of performance (ROP) of his animals has been of upmost importance to Harry. At the Douglas Bull Test Station, he served as a director, vice-president and president.

He also worked on the ROP Board and the Charolais Herd Analysis and Records Management program.

In 2002, Harry was named to the Canadian Charolais Association Honour Roll. In 1988 he was awarded the

Purebred Beef Producer Award from the Manitoba Department of Agriculture and in 1989 and 1998 he was nominated for the Seedstock Producer Honour Roll of Excellence by the Beef Improvement Federation based in South Dakota.

In his community, Harry was a promoter of cattle production in general and the Charolais breed in particular. As a leader for 18 years in the Rivers 4-H Club, he was always active and interested in the Beef Project.

When his children were younger, Harry took time to coach minor sports – baseball, hockey and ringette. An avid curler, he served on the Rivers Rink Board for several years.

In 2009 Harry became a director of the Rivers and Area Community Foundation. His quiet demeanor, combined with his “let’s get it done attitude”, never fails to keep all of the directors on point and completing the task at hand.

Calving Ease in Charolais Sean McGrath

While many commercial users of Charolais genetics may ask questions or pay close attention to the birth weight of a potential purchase, in truth what they are really concerned about is the calving ease associated with that animal. While birth weight is highly associated with calving ease (0.65) it is not a reliable predictor of potential calving ease. For this reason the Canadian Charolais Association invested in a unique genetic evaluation for Calving Ease that combines calving ease scores from first calf heifers, birth weight information from calves and information on gestation length where available.

These pieces of information are combined to provide the foundation for a very effective tool to improve the calving ease of Charolais cattle and to work with commercial customers to maximize growth while minimizing calving difficulty. The evaluation uses the association or relationships for calving ease between direct effects such as how heavy the calf is and its actual calving ease score and maternal effects, such as the damâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s influence on the gestation length. Calving ease actually has a relatively low heritability compared to traits such as birthweight and gestation length, but by combining these indicator traits into the evaluation, we can produce an EPD for calving ease that is a better predictor of easy calving than any of the component traits included in the evaluation. The associations between the various traits included in the evaluation are shown in Table 1.

One obvious question that comes to mind is why we do not include information on calving ease from mature cows. The main reason for this is that there is virtually no difference in expressed calving ease between mature cows and very few 60

calves are assisted out of mature dams. In essence if all calves are born unassisted, we cannot tell which sires are throwing calves that create difficulty. We do use the birth weight and gestation length information from these cows as it is a good indicator of relative calving difficulty and there is variation in the data.

Results from the EPD analysis are standardized on a scale from 0 to 100 that includes all Charolais cattle evaluated (back to the early herdbook). Although the EPD is calculated based on predicted calving difficulty when used on first calf heifers, higher values indicate easier calving for all classes of cattle.

Breeders have made tremendous

0.10 progress in this area. The current average CE EPD is 68.8 for the current population which includes calves born in 2013 through to 2015.

These are the cattle that are newly active in the commercial industry or will be heading out to the industry in the next year. By looking at the Genetic Trend for Calving Ease (Figure 1.) we can see a meteoric improvement compared to a mere 15 years ago when the average was under 50.

In terms of using the CE EPD and understanding the values. The range of EPD for the current population goes from 0 (very difficult) to 100 (very easy) calving. While it would not be recommended to use bulls continued on page 62

with lower CE to breed heifers, there are certainly some easy calving Charolais genetics available. In most cases cattle in the upper 10% should have no issues when used on growthy heifers, dependent upon their genetics and pre-calving management and most modern Charolais cattle will readily work for breeding mature cows.

Admittedly most customers are going to continue to look at birth weight, however, the calving ease EPD that combines birth weight information, gestation length information, calving ease information from first calf heifers and maternal effects is a much more powerful tool to select easy calving Charolais genetics.

Contribution to the ‘Awareness of Depression’ Campaign Doug Johnston

Dear Helge Thank you for helping me get the semen and for helping with the transit to Alta-Genetics.

Unfotunately, I had another set back with my depression back in January.

It took until early April before I could get going again. Needless to say my grandiose plans of embryo transplanting the heifer I bought got put off for amother year. The heifer did calve in January outside on her own and has a beautiful bull calf. He still has all of both ears and all of his tail. She calved January 18th, which just happened to be one of the three days in January that the temperature got up to +5 C. I named him Lucky!

after the heifer has Speckled Park. He also calves in January and February so a warm barn was available if she needed it.

He decided he wanted to try synchronized AI, so I offered to do the AIing if he synchronized my cow.

I bought a brand new shiny nitrogen tank and drove to Balzac to pick up the semen. When the day finally got here I was so excited I could hardly sleep the night before. It was a timed synchro so at 3:00 pm. we started to A.I. I was able to thread 7 out of 8.

Not bad for a guy who hasn’t A.I.d a cow in 25 years. I am pretty sure the cow I couldn’t thread was not in heat anyway. At least that’s what I told the young man!

All I can say is I’m back!

Helge, after a 15 year hiatus, due to a long battle with depression, I want to announce to you and all the Charolais world, I’m back!

Gerald Sim stopped in the other day for coffee. He told me that when I took him to the SCA convention last June so he could have a visit, that the afternoon turned his life around. He found a new reason for living.

A great supper was sponsored by HTA Charolais and then a semen and pie auction was held, which raised enough to cover the cost of the event for the MCA. This was followed by an evening of socializing and enjoying the music of Juno nominated artist Del Barber and his band.

OBITUARY

John Wilgenbusch 1953 – 2015

John Allan Wilgenbusch, late of Halbrite, passed away July 4, 2015 at the age of 61 years, after a four year battle with cancer. John was born in Midale August 20, 1953 and raised on the family farm south of Halbrite. He attended school in Halbrite and finished his high school in Midale. It was there he met his future wife, Brenda McGregor. He attended the University in Saskatoon until he heard of some farm land for sale. He purchased the farm that he has operated for 42 years. John and Brenda were married in 1974. Always involved in sports, John played and coached hockey and baseball at all age groups even before his own children were involved.

In 1979, son Colin was born, followed by Conrad in 1983 and Craig in 1986. He was always their first coach and their biggest supporter. “If a job was worth doing, you do it to the best of your ability.”

Because John had been involved with cattle his whole life and a former 4-H member, it was only natural the boys were also involved. John was Cymri 4-H leader for over 10 years. He also served on the local rink board for many years organizing many hockey tournaments, ball tournaments and fund raisers. Supporting your local community was important.

The drought and grasshopper years in the 1980s changed life on the farm. To support his growing family John went to work full time for Saskatchewan Crop Insurance and worked for them for 10 years. He loved the work and the people he met but hated being away all day from his farm. The choice had to be made – sell the cattle and continue working away or quit the job and expand the cattle herd and try to stay 66

on the farm. The decision was easy for him. Expand the cattle herd and spend more time at home with his boys. This led to the eventual creation of Wilgenbusch Charolais, the purebred Charolais cattle operation that has been the focal point of his life for 27 years. He purchased their first Charolais females in 1987 and sold their first bull in 1989. In 1994 they hit the show road and have been out there ever since. They have been Premier Breeder and Exhibitor at Brandon and Regina many times and had many champions showing the quality of the herd today. The Wilgenbusch Charolais herd is now the second largest in Canada. John was happiest when talking to other breeders about their latest calf crop or showing people through the bull pen for the upcoming bull sale. John served on the Saskatchewan Charolais Association for many years including two years as president and then the Canadian Charolais Association board including 2nd Vice-President until the past year when his health declined. During this time John and Brenda travelled to many countries around the world looking at and promoting the Charolais breed.

Because of his outgoing personality, John made many friends worldwide.

In 2012 John and Brenda were presented with the Saskatchewan Charolais Association Honour Scroll for their dedication and hard work to the breed.

John’s love of sports led to a life-long love of the Roughriders and the Blue Jays. At one bull sale in Ontario, the bonus was a Blue Jays baseball game. The cows took a back seat to the excitement of going to the Jays game.

help local ranchers get a fair return for some of their animals. Western Prime Meats was started and John worked there for over 2 years to help get it off the ground but then it was back to his own cows. That year John also decided that to sell his own breeding bulls more efficiently, he needed his own bull sale. The 12th annual bull sale was held this past April. In 2006, Western Prime was awarded a Weybex award for business of the year in Weyburn.

That same year John and Brenda were awarded the Golden Sheaf award by the Weyburn Chamber of Commerce for excellence in farming achievement.

John’s latest passion was his grandchildren. The past 3-4 years have been the most painful for him but also the most exciting. It didn’t matter how bad a day he was having, when those grandchildren showed up it was time to have fun. Have a play fight, read a book, share some ice cream or have a snooze with grandpa in his chair!

John was predeceased by his parents, Henry and Kay Wilgenbusch, sister, Rita Casey and mother-in-law Marvel McGregor.

He will lovingly be remembered by his wife, Brenda Wilgenbusch; son, Colin (Ashlee) Wilgenbusch and their family, Cash, Carter and Cally; son, Conrad (Erica) Wilgenbusch and their family, Rhea and Turner; son, Craig (Tricia) Wilgenbusch; father-in-law, Keith McGregor; sisters, Rosella (Jim) McGrane and family and Marilyn (David) Elliott and family; brother, Daniel (Robbie) Wilgenbusch and family; brothers-in -law, Robin (Robin) Casey and Ross (Karen) McGregor and sister-in-law Carla (Tom) Mesic; as well as 15 nieces and nephews and many close friends.

OBITUARY

Joseph Grandmont Age 87

Joseph Laurent (Lawrence) Antoine Grandmont, Charmont Farms, Arglyle, Manitoba passed away May 10th at his residence in Bethel Home, Selkirk, MB at the age of 87. Left to cherish Lawrence’s memory is his wife Irene, the love of his life for 62

years, his sons John (Joan), Ronald (Dawn), daughter Judy, two grandsons and three great-grandchildren.

In 1975 Lawrence partnered with his son John to expand their grain farm and establish a herd of purebred Charolais cattle carrying the name

Charmont Farms. This breeding herd still operates today.

Lawrence was very community oriented volunteering for many boards and projects, including being a councilor in the RM of Woodlands for 27 years.

OBITUARY

Camiel Doolaege 1925 – 2015

Camiel Henricus Doolaege was born in Oostburg, Holland, where he took schooling and one year of Agriculture College. In 1951, he moved to Canada and worked for farmers in Spirit River, Alberta. Later that year his fiancé Margriet joined him in Canada and they were married. In 1952 they moved to the Castor area where Camiel worked as 70

a farm laborer. Finally they rented a place which included 31 Angus cows.

Marguerite worked right along with Camiel. She also had a baby every year; 10 children in 11 years.

He had a passion for raising cattle and excelled at it. Switching to raise Charolais cattle the Spruceville Cattle Company and the Doolaege Farming Ltd. continued to grow over the Charolais Banner • August 2015

years. Camiel was a director of the Canadian Charolais Association for a term from 1982 – 1985.

Camiel was predeceased by his wife Margriet in March of 2015 and by children Joseph, Anthony, Annie and Robert. He is survived by children Maria, Willy, Lucie, Paul, Gerald and Leana, 23 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.

Saskatchewan Charolais Association AGM The 52nd Annual General Meeting of the Saskatchewan Charolais Association was held in conjunction with the Canadian Charolais Youth Association Conference and Show July 25th in Yorkton. This year about 12% of the Saskatchewan membership was in attendance.

Greg Gilliland, Carievale, was reelected President for the upcoming year while Carey Weinbender, Canora, takes his 3rd year as 1st Vice-President.

Kelly Howe, Moose Jaw, was voted 2nd Vice-President and Dave Blechinger, Rosetown, goes into his 8th year as Secretary-Treasurer.

Re-elected to three year terms on the board were Dave Blechinger and Kelly Howe, while Tyler Smyth, Herbert, was newly elected for a three year term replacing retiring director Orland Walker, Hudson Bay. The 2014 financial statement showed a net loss of $7,200 with still $36,000 in reserves on a budget of over $40,000.

The Fieldman budget is the largest expense with nearly $14,000 invested in time and travel of Bob Jackson.

Bob attended 17 market sale days including 5 bred cow sales. Of the 12 feeder sales he attended all but one started with Charcross calves and they consistently showed a 2 to 5 cent premium over other breeds. Besides the sales Bob attended industry conferences with a booth at the Saskatchewan Beef Industry Conference, the Sask. Stockgrowers Annual Meeting and the Western Beef Field Day at Termuende Ranch.

Advertising and promotion is the next biggest budget item spending nearly $13,000 with Radio advertising and promotional handouts taking the biggest part of this. Some paper advertising and newletter were also included in the spending.

In 2014 the SCA supported 4-H members showing Charolais animals by distributing 75 Dairy Queen gift cards to 24 clubs in the province.

Also, at Agribition they awarded 13 embroidered Stormtech jackets carrying both the SCA and 4-H logos.

The recipients of the jackets had won top hours at their respective Regional shows. They also sponsored the major Spring steer and heifer shows.

Mel Reekie, General Manager of the CCA, was on hand along with the two Saskatchewan directors on the CCA board to bring an update from the association office and answer questions from the membership.

There was good discussion on topics such as Genomics, Scholarships and more.

The Key to Unlocking the Value of Data Is in the Industry’s Hands Deborah Wilson, Sr. Vice President, BIXSCO Inc.

During the month of June 2015, I had the great privilege of formally interviewing nearly twenty industry leaders from all parts of the supply chain to discuss a critical topic—the issue of exchanging information. (A full summary of information is available at a link below). Those of you who know me know that this issue has been on my radar for years.

This is why I agreed to join a startup technology company (BIXSCO) when most women at my stage of life (notice I didn’t say age, I said stage) would be finding ways to wind down.

I believe that industry-wide data sharing is critically important.

Despite my passion, I realize that not everyone shares my enthusiasm. Talk to the hand Deb, some might say.

Instead, let me talk to a couple of other important localities. The first is your back pocket. The second is your chest pocket. But don’t take my word for it. Take it from the cross section of industry leaders I spent hours with on the phone.

The first thing they will tell you, as they told me, is that information is power. It’s the key to understanding what you’re producing so you can do it better, faster, with a higher quality—and get properly rewarded for the meat you’re able to produce.

One insider told me that there could be up to twenty-five percent more profit if producers have access to data information flow at the cow/calf stage.

It’s also the key to accessing the world’s high value markets like Asia and Europe—who are asking us to prove the history of care of our animals, which at the moment, we aren’t able to do. Countries that can—like Ireland and Australia—are going to gain a much bigger share of these markets while fight amongst ourselves, thinking that the best way to make money is at someone else’s expense (their words, not mine).

I was happy to hear them say that the industry has a lot of confidence in BIXSCO’s management and is willing to give BIXS another shot after a disappointing first attempt. And while they’re optimistic, they’re also realistic about our chances for success. So they’re sceptical about whether BIXS can overcome the competitiveness, mistrust, and complacency that plague the industry and have delayed the evolution of data sharing.

That’s why our job at BIXSCO is to help the industry imagine the value of an integrated supply chain, and to help everyone (from producers through to packers) find their own ways to unlock the value of information by buying and selling it to others. We’re here to help facilitate those relationships so that everyone can find value. When we do that, some believe that industry fragmentation will be a thing of the past. Others wonder if mandating data sharing is the only realistic solution. The answer is clearly in the industry’s own hands.

Now that I’ve addressed your back pocket, let me talk to the chest pocket—specifically the left side pocket. Yes, I’m speaking to your heart now, and the pride that every one of us feels about being part of this industry. But again, don’t take my word for it. Listen to the industry leaders I interviewed. They’ll tell you that Canadian beef is recognized as the highest quality protein in the world, raised right by producers who care. They’ll tell you that you’re part of a great industry with a great story.

They’ll also tell you that none of that matters because we can’t prove our promises. And that’s the other important thing that BIXS can do— reflect the pride of care that goes into raising, feeding, and packaging our beef. By helping to track those practices through the chain, we can strengthen and protect the whole Charolais Banner • August 2015

industry while helping individual players extract value from their data.

The last thing these industry leaders told us is that our job isn’t going to be easy. So our goal is to start with some small wins. As a sign of positive momentum, several breed associations are now prepared to bridge their databases with BIXS to allow their data to flow through the chain. This is an important first step, providing us with millions of new records. Secondly, the packers have agreed to re-engage with BIXS by inputting their most recent carcass data into the system. These are exciting new developments for sure, but we still have other hurdles to overcome. We’re working on technology and website improvements, and have developed a strong industry engagement plan that we’ll roll out later this fall.

Over the next few months, we’ll keep building momentum by getting support from different parts of the chain—starting with the most interested and engaged parts of the industry that already buy into the importance of data sharing. Maybe you’re not interested in unlocking the value of the data that you already have. Perhaps you don’t want to get compensated by other parts of the chain for the value of your work or the pride you take. After all, improving marketing, management, and profitability isn’t for everyone.

But if it’s for you, get on board! In fact, what are you waiting for? If everyone waits until someone else takes the first move, we’ll never progress. BeefTalk: Summer Safety for the Farm and Ranch Kris Ringwall, Beef Specialist, NDSU Extension Service

Safety never should be taken for granted on any farm or ranch. And even more so when guests arrive, so plan ahead.

Growing up on a farm or ranch seemed to be the norm and something everyone did. At least that was the thinking for all those kids who grew up in the middle of the last century.

Granted, not everyone wanted to stay on the home place, but regardless of where life led, the memories of those carefree days are real. But times have changed, and today, most kids do not have the opportunity to explore and reach out to nature as farm and ranch kids did in the past.

The fact is many, many children today grow up in a city or urban environment with little contact or interaction with the farms and ranches of yesterday. The stark reality: Even if a child is growing up on a modern farm or ranch, the complexities of today’s agriculture often prohibit much involvement. Instead, those “country kids” are pretty urbanfriendly, while the urbanized child is not farm or ranch savvy. Child safety is a huge concern because when a child does not grow up in a rural

environment, the many survival traits of rural youth are missing.

Growing up, we buzzed around cows and bulls and pigs and chickens and tractors and drills and about any other obstacle that would be around.

Our skate parks were cow paths and the ramps simply cliffs. In fact, even back then, the arrival of the city cousins was always a bit challenging.

The story goes that it really was my own cousins who chased several pigs to death on a hot summer afternoon.

Catching them was much like the centennial greased pig chase, only in this case, the pigs were in a pasture supposedly gaining weight for market.

Those city kids just did not know.

The “good old days” were real. But how many children today would know how to catch a pig? I can remember handing the city cousins a bucket of feed for 30 troughs and they always would put the whole bucket in one trough. And they wouldn’t even spread out the grain. Those city cousins had no concept of how to feed a herd.

And then there was the stud. Colts were always pretty nice, but the same could not be said for the stud. Or the boar, the bull, the ram or maybe even

the rooster. One simply knew: Do not go in the stud pen. But those city kids, no, they just climbed over the fence like a bunch of lemmings following one after the other over a cliff.

Retrieval was always successful but not fun.

Today, these memories only serve as strong reminders that those summer visitors are pretty naïve when it comes to farm and ranch safety.

Constant monitoring of not only the little tykes, but their parents as well, is necessary. As equipment has gotten larger, there is no room for errors and certainly not for passengers and wannabe farmers.

Today is not a day to overreact, but it’s certainly a day to contemplate the arrival of summer guests and draw up a plan for everyone’s safety. Perhaps simply shutting down for the day, pulling the keys, locking up the shop and making sure the pen gates are all secure would be a good practice.

Prepare for summer family and guests and do not expect the next generation has any common sense on how to herd cows, shut gates, watch out for the bull, catch a calf or even why there are sharp barbs on the wire fence. Think safety first.

CANADIAN CHAROLAIS YOUTH ASSOCIATION NEWS

CCYA Programs Shae-Lynn Evans, National Board President

Sixty-five juniors met in Yorkton, Saskatchewan, this year for the Canadian Charolais Youth Association Conference and Show from July 22-25. The week was a great success, and will be featured in the Charolais Banner in October with show results and highlights from the week!

At the National Board meeting held during the conference, it was decided to make a small change regarding membership. Previously, membership was due in July to coincide with conference registration and our membership year ran from July to July. We have decided to change the membership due date to January 1st so the youth memberships can be paid at the same time as the CCA memberships. The cost of membership will be $20.00 if paid in January, and if the membership is late and paid in July with conference registration, the cost will be increased to $40.00. Members will receive a letter in the mail at the beginning of the year as a reminder that membership fees are due.

One of the major benefits of having a junior membership for the whole year is that youth members have the opportunity to take advantage of the variety of CCYA programs available.

Here is a brief outline of some of the programs available: Genetics Program - This program is run by the National Board and encourages youth to take an active role in their breeding programs.

Youth are able to apply for free semen from leading bulls in the industry and use them in their own herds. This year we expanded the semen on offer to all Canadian exportable bulls from the Semex and Genex catalogues, as well as any semen that is held in the CCYA storage at Alta Genetics. We were very excited that eleven youth members took advantage of the program this year.

Essay Competition - This program aims to encourage youth to be involved in the industry by thinking critically about topics influencing agriculture and the Charolais industries, as well as encouraging education. Essays are due in June and prize money ranging from $75-300 is awarded at the conference. This year we had ten essays entered in the competition, and were very excited with this turn out.

Leadership Scholarship - The leadership scholarship is funded by the annual semen auction, which was held in conjunction with the Charolais National Sale in Brandon, Manitoba this past November. Because of such a great turn out this year, prize money was increased to $1400 for first, $900 for second, and $700 for third place. The scholarship is based on an application and an interview, and awarded on contribution to the industry and the association.

Newsletters - The CCYA newsletters are sent out via email twice a year, in fall and in spring.

Newsletters are full of tips and helpful hints for showing, as well as updates from your National Board.

Buy and Show Program - Monetary rebates up to $125 are available for youth who have purchased their own Charolais or Charcross female, and then proceed to show her. For further guidelines or details, visit the CCYA website at www.youth.charolais.com Purchase Incentive Program Youth members who purchase a female will be provided with a copy of the CCYA semen inventory lists and can select two straws of semen for their female.
