Preface The writings contained in the “Life Lessons” series draw on my personal experiences, lifelong recollections, lessons learned, and acquired knowledge. These works also come from the heart. They are purposefully filled with emotion. Therefore, I used poetry for the most part. I am not a poet. Those with expertise in such matters will certainly confirm this. Nevertheless, my use of poetry enabled me to open my heart. These poems reflect a combination of my observations and experiences in the world at large. Clearly, my personal life colors what I have to say. A few of these poems are written in the “first” person. But most of them speak in terms of “we” or “you,” rather than “I.” The poems are obviously saturated with my own beliefs and philosophies. I hope the reader will find some small dose of wisdom included in each poem.

Age July 5, 2019 Lesson, in reality. All of us, are aging. For time, is always, marching on. Often, it is racing. Not just, Grandpa and Grandma. The same, with newborn child. For all of us, age every day. Advance, by yards and miles. While passing, through life’s phases. I’ve noticed, one odd thing. There seems to be, small parts of me. To which, I always cling. Early, childhood memories. In many ways, align. With how I’ve lived, each stage of life. Both in my heart, and mind. Though I have grown, in stature. Sometimes, I do feel small. Educated. Experienced. Still don’t know much, at all. And yes, insecurities. I felt, when I was young. Will sneak into, grown-up thinking. Worry, till things get done. Obvious signs, of aging. From these, I cannot hide. But still do act, in silly ways. Innocent child, inside. Even tackling, grown-up tasks. The boy in me, presides. He sees, the adult challenges. Like, a carnival ride. Another thing, I’ve noticed. The same things, make me smile. As child, and senior citizen. By music, I’m beguiled. Internal peace, found in church. Library, feels like home. Books! Amuse, inspire, enlighten. Imagination, roams. Seek warmth, in colder weather. Dress cool, in summer heat. Hot dog, hamburger, and ice cream. Remain, as special treats. Accept, I won’t stop aging. That’s not, entirely bad. I’ve earned, each gray hair, ache, and pain. With full life, I have had. Perhaps, best part of aging. Appreciate, each chance. Every new day, is such a gift. To learn and laugh and dance. 6
Alone June 15, 2019 Sometimes, want to be alone. It helps me, to be me. Does not mean, I’m anti-social. Or acting, bashfully. Alone, does not mean loneliness. Or ignoring, duties. But slowing down, looking inward. Makes the world, less crazy. My life’s, been rather hectic. Service. Helping others. Soldier, teacher, husband, father. Writer, and caregiver. Love, being with family. They mean, the world to me. Our time together, fulfilling. With feelings, flowing free. Value, my friends and colleagues. With strong, and lasting bonds. Have made, so many memories. Through teamwork. Battles won. Still, I need to be alone. For moments. Or a day. To pull myself, back to center. In very, simple ways. At these times, I’ll set aside, responsibilities. Instead, do hiking or reading. Go to concerts, movies. Traveling, is also useful. Restores, my attitude. At other times, just need to sit. Alone, in solitude. Reconnect, with who I am. My core thoughts, and desires. Identify, with my own self. Rekindle, my own fire. Reflect upon, what I’ve done. The errors, and the good. Make sense, of what I need to do. Adjust, in ways I should. Turn down the noise, around me. Turn down the noise, inside. Surrender, to that softer voice. That deep in me, resides. Alone, I find my compass. True north, it points the way. Corrects life’s map, and lights a path. Even, on darkest days.

Angel January 26, 2019 The angel, on your shoulder. It’s always there, for you. Part of your life. Part of your world. Observing, all you do. No, it does not control you. Nor will it, intervene. Its purpose, both clear and hidden. Visible, and unseen. Your angel, communicates. In very many ways. Often, it whispers. Sometimes, roars. As messages, relayed. Your angel, will speak often. But not always, with words. Through art, nature, feelings, and dreams. Fluttering wings, of birds. Angels, change appearance. Variety, of forms. A sunrise, sunset, stormy sky. A child, that’s newly born. A good deed, deep in your past. Allegiance, to a team. A melody, you can’t forget. A reoccurring, dream. A quote. A painting. A look. A tender, loving touch. A toy. A taste or aroma. A song, that means so much. A spouse, parent, grandparent, friend, or patient mentor. A flower. A pet. A hobby. An open, or locked door. Aches and pains, as warning signs. Pictures, of your hometown. Reminders, of mortality. And love, that’s lost then found. A quilt, good book, or warm coat. A comfortable chair. A movie, ball game, or phone call. A chill, that’s in the air. Your angel, transforms quickly. In ways, you don’t perceive. One moment, right in front of you. Then from your sight, it leaves. Even when, you don’t feel it. At your side, it does stay. In touch, with what happens to you…and all, you do and say. Some people, will question this. They’ll chose, not to believe. But angels, don’t need permission. To doubters, pay no heed. 8
Baseball Cards September 1, 2019 Mantle, Maris, and Yogi. Koufax, Drysdale, Gibson. Baseball cards, kept in cigar box. Collected, each season. Statistics, mesmerized me. On one side, of the card. Posed picture, on the other side. I held, in less regard. The numbers, and the data. I found, fascinating. The photo, I rarely looked at. Didn’t find, compelling. Was not, till I was older. Began to understand. The human being, on the card. Was why, I was a fan. Their stories, more than numbers. Finally, discovered. They all, had personal struggles. The cards, had not measured. The human side, of players. The cards, just did not tell. Burdens, flaws, and disappointments. The many times, they fell. The leadership, on the field. Sacrifices, for team. The constant glare, of media. Reporters, often mean. When victory, was so close. Their quiet, tragedies. Countless injuries, they played through. The pain, fans didn’t see. Still each day, they persevered. Rebound, from each defeat. The daily grind. The victories. The odds, they’d often beat. I still, collect baseball cards. Now, digitally shown. Of course, there is an app for that. Collection, on my phone. The stats, updated daily. With deep, analysis. Yes, the pictures, are more colorful. But things, these photos miss. The human side, still ignored. Very, impersonal. Lots of glitter, but lacking heart. Mostly, statistical. I love the game. The players. And all, they overcome. See them, as more than mere numbers. When every game, is done. 9
Bridges May 27, 2019 In life, cross many bridges. Most short. Some very long. Leading us, into our future. To where, we each belong. Some bridges take us, physically. To people. Locations. Other bridge crossings, are mental. Found, in hard decisions. Emotional crossings, too. As heart, deals with changes. Spiritual bridges, as well. Spanning deep, vast ranges. All life, is constant motion. Beginning, to the end. Often, our motion’s just routine. In our small circles, spin. We fear, breaking these circles. For that means, changing too. Uncertain, where bridge might take us. Sometimes, don’t have a clue. Still, moving on, to new things. Embedded, in our core. For destiny, is only found, when we boldly, explore. That is harder, than it sounds. We love, our comfort zones. Anxiety, can swell within, as we, begin to roam. The first step, that is taken? Some courage, is required. Yet most bridges, will be conquered. By things, that we desire. If something, you truly want, is on, the other side. You’ll cross, with greater willingness. As fears, slowly subside. But what if, you’re still unsure? Don’t want, to take a stance. Afraid to gamble, what you have. Don’t want, to take the chance. That is when, you must decide. Just how, your life will be. Someone, who’s chained to just one spot. Or someone, who is free It’s not my place, to push you. Or tell you, what to do. But as for me, each bridge I cross. I’ll also, watch for you.

Circles July 6, 2019 Actions, travel in circles. It’s always, been that way. “What goes around, will come around.” For all, you do and say. Circles, might be large or small. Represent, lengths of time. Yet there’s one thing, that’s unchanging. Response, will come, in-kind. Some circles, are rather large. Seems to take, forever. Other circles, very tiny. Sooner, more than later. We can’t change, the circle’s size. How quick, reply will be. Nor can we decide, what happens. Just have to wait, and see. We CAN control, our actions. But that’s all, we control. Actions of others, will evolve, till circles, become whole. Think some people, are exempt? Those, with power or fame. Those of wealth, blue bloods, or elite. For them, it’s not the same? While often, it’s hard to see. Circles, apply to all. Rewards. Punishments. Will arrive. In ways, both large and small. Station in life, won’t matter. The long run, tells the tale. We all receive, mirror outcomes, for actions, on life’s trail. When we do good, it comes back. But often, it’s disguised. What we’re given, just might not be, the thing, we most desired. Bottom-line, we still are blessed. With things, we want or need. It might not come, direct to us. Loved ones, instead, receive. And yes, the reverse holds true. Hurt others, seeking prize? Intentional, or just thoughtless. Perhaps, rationalized. Consequence, for bad actions. Message, karma will send. Direct to us? Friends? Your family? Penalty, shared by them? If boastful. Prideful. Selfish. Your circles, will turn dark. Focus, on positive actions. In brightness, make your mark. 11
Consistent January 11, 2019 Consistency. Stagnation. These words, are not the same. Consistency, is a virtue. Stagnation, blocks all change. Being consistent, builds trust. A pattern, clear to see. This pattern, must include evolving. Improvement, as your key. Do not close, your mind or heart, to ideas, that are new. Implement, innovations. Make updates, that are due. Draw richly, upon the past. The lessons, that you’ve learned. Then, build bridges to the future. New respect, you will earn. Be open. Experiment. Don’t stagnate, or decay. Listen, learn, and evaluate. Do something new, each day. Read, study...observing much. And then, you can decide. What you do wish, to try today. And what, to set aside. Think clearly, before changing. Don’t act, like a pinball. Retain methods, that are worthy. In matters, large and small. Do not be, “helter-skelter.” Without, any real plan. Thoughtfully blend, the old and new. In every way, you can. Be fair, honest, respectful. Aim true, and follow through. Throughout your life, stay positive. In all the things, you do. Treat others, consistently. Avoid, being moody. Do not criticize, unjustly. Praising good work, freely. Accept, you won’t be perfect. Stumbles, will be common. Don’t brood or pout. Pick yourself up. Forgive yourself, move on. If you focus, on these things, you will be, a success. You’ll earn esteem. And be admired. Counted, among the best.

Data August 3, 2019 From the moment, we are born. Information, gathered. All of our senses, utilized. Tons of data, captured. Taking, all this data in. Storing, in memory. Gradually, makes us informed. About the world, we see. This data, does have meaning. But only, when we think. We’ll start to sort. Categorize. Discover patterns, links. As we grow, our data bank. Develop, perceptions. A concept, of our world and life. Philosophy. Reflections. Data, can be powerful. Improving, all our days. For when data’s timely, accurate. It helps, to light our way. Data, is valuable. To people. Companies. Decisions, are made. Lives, are changed. Can shape, our history. Nations. Organizations. Might either, thrive or fail. The compilation of data, impacts, who will prevail. How, we interpret data. Is also, very key. For data, must be analyzed. And applied, properly. Embrace, the strength of data. Be wary, just the same. While it, is not a living thing. It’s something, we must tame. Data, is not achievement. Nor always, positive. Inaccurate? Misunderstood? Turns into, negative. Accuracy of data, something, we must demand. Plus, thoughtful interpretations. To be, the best we can. What is our level of trust, in the data, we see? Do we understand it, deeply? Analyzed, carefully? Data, is not good or bad. Depends, on what we do. How, it’s gathered. Understood. Used. Will define, it’s value. 13
Don’t Go Looking for Christmas November 26, 2018 Don’t go looking for Christmas. You won’t find it, on-line. Christmas resides, in faith and love. Within us, all the time. Throughout the year, covered up. By our worries, and chores. Our minds focused, on other things. On Christmas, closed the door. Then the season, does arrive. Often, with air that’s cold. We dream, of snow and icicles. Wrappings. Red, green, and gold. We turn our thoughts, to shopping. Decorations, in the yard. The Christmas tree, and ornaments. And sending, Christmas cards. We plan the meals. Gatherings. Christmas concerts, and plays. Stock up, on eggnog and fruitcake. Get fatter, by the day. Watch, our favorite movies. Listen, to special songs. Read “‘Twas The Night Before Christmas.” Hang lights, where they belong. Take pictures, with Santa Claus. Children, dressed so dear. And, we put out milk and cookies. Carrots, for the reindeer. Spend time with family, friends. Contact, those far away. Attend, religious services. Then brace, for the big day. We did it all. Gifts unwrapped. We take, everything down. And then, might feel strangely empty. The “spirit,” was not found. Good things, were done. And it was right. For all of this, to be. Really nice, shopping for presents. (Especially for me!) And still, despite our efforts. Christmas, just might not come. For we cannot, “create” Christmas. With all these things, we’ve done. The season, can be joyful. But still, not be complete. Uncover Christmas, inside you. Through faith and love, find peace. Don’t go looking for Christmas. In all the things, you do. Embrace your faith, open you heart. Christmas, will come to you. 14
Easter Awakening April 19, 2019 I was only, ten years old. Easter, awakening. Sleeping, in a hospital bed. Past few days, confusing. In and out, of consciousness. My memory, unclear. This had started, on Good Friday. And it, had ended here. Set, for Friday services. Weather, was looking bad. Going to church, whole family. Mom sent me, to get Dad. “Go tell Dad, time to get dressed. We don’t want, to be late.” Dad was doing, a simple chore. In the barn, mending gate. Cut across, the “riding pen.” Thought that, would save me time. I did not check, as I’d been taught. A horse, came from behind. Was a bronc. A little wild. Was spooked. I did not see. As I called out, “Dad. Mom says that…”. The horse, ran over me. I really, don’t remember. Anything, after that. From that moment, through Easter day. Was laid out, on my back. My Mother told me later. “Mumbled. Mostly asleep.” A concussion. No broken bones. Was just groggy, and weak. As I awoke on Sunday. Saw gray walls, that were bare. My mind clearing. And I could see, my Dad, sleeping in chair. His big arms, were wrapped around. Very large, stuffed bunny. At first, I wondered where I was. Head, still feeling funny. Slowly, pieced things together. This must be, Easter day. My Dad, then opened his eyes. Smiled, in a sleepy way. And then, I asked the question. “Is that bunny for me?” He laughed. But did not say a word. The pain, in him, could see. “It’s my fault. I should have looked.” I quickly, told my Dad. He put his lips, on my forehead. Best Easter, ever had. 15
Expectations September 13, 2019 Learned, in officer training. How soldiers, do react. To big goals, and lengthy speeches. To them, it’s all abstract. So many goals, come and go. That’s just how, they see it. Fancy words, printed on paper. Through lectures, they must sit. The daily grind, continues. As goals fade. Disappear. Just do their job. Follow orders. Weekend pass, drawing near. So, the question must be asked. Can this cycle, be changed? When setting goals, isn’t working. New mindset, must be framed. A goal, will endure and thrive When it, becomes transformed. Into real world, expectations. An urgency, then born. When goals, become expectations. That, is VERY different. For then, troops know, things will get checked. A message, clearly sent. Must inspect, what you expect. So all, will understand. There’s going to be, a follow-up. On each, and every man. Expectations, do work well. When there is, a sound plan. Inspections, focused logically. Led with firm, guiding hand. Monitor? Intimidate? Those words, are not the same. Troops don’t mind, being observed. That won’t, drive them insane. But if the troops, feel mistreated. Of if, they are abused. They will despise, the process. Sabotage, will ensue. If soldiers, feel encouraged. They’ll take inspections, well. If recognized, for improvements. Morale, will quickly swell. It’s about, the follow through. And it’s about, the style. With trust and respect, mutual. Needle, moves on the dial.

Fair January 21, 2019 We have been told, “life’s not fair.” This isn’t, entirely true. Often, we get, what we deserve. Can make us glad…or blue. Our best efforts, to succeed, won’t always, guarantee. Those great outcomes, for which we’ve worked. Opposite, we receive. Bad things happen, to us all. Tough times, we must endure. Hard, to stay upbeat and focused. Discouraging, for sure. It’s easy, to blame others. Sometimes, they are guilty. “Blame,” might also be inside us. Yet we, choose not to see. Yes, you might be a victim. Mistreated, or attacked. Justice denied, or even worse. Hands tied, behind your back. This is not, always the case. For you, could be at fault. What’s done to you, a reaction. By others, you assault. The world, is just not perfect. Of course, neither are we. If fairness, is so elusive, in what, can we believe? First step, believe in yourself. Don’t lose, your faith or hope. Next step, keep moving, improving. Develop skills, to cope. Don’t tolerate those, who abuse, for selfish greed, or gain. And don’t become, like “one of them.” That’s how, they win their game. Don’t push aside, those you love. Appreciate them, more. Don’t hate those, who have done you wrong. For that, destroys your core. You can use, the pain inside. Along, with love you feel. As fuel, for internal engine. New outcomes, you can build. You cannot right, every wrong. Reverse, all bad decisions. But you can fight, for what is right. Changes, and revisions. If you truly, seek fairness. These words, will be the key: “Imagine, the person you’d follow. That person, you must be.” 17
Hearts Aglow June 30, 2019 How do we, explain these things? Heavenly, mystery. We see a face. Or touch a hand. Vision, of what might be. We listen. Talk. Even laugh. Pretend. Begin to dream. We long for more. Yet, still deny. Just can’t be, what it seems. How is it, we sense these things? Somehow, must take a chance. Pursue, often so awkwardly. The first kiss. The first dance. Is it simple chemistry? Primal, tribal bonding? Or is it fate? Merging of souls? Beyond, understanding? How is it, we feel these things? That two, will become one. Unite, despite our differences. Aligning, moon and sun. Is it all coincidence? Random? Or meant to be? Spiritual? Raw attraction? Matter of destiny? Can we really, know these things? That feelings, will endure. Through ups and downs. Triumph and trials. Final outcome, insured. The answers, to these questions. I doubt, we’ll ever know. But the answers, aren’t important. With two hearts, all aglow.

Help Someone April 18, 2019 Something inside, signals you, to help those, that you can. An impulse, from your DNA. You “want,” to lend a hand. For “species preservation,” is deep inside, of us. And just like “self-preservation,” it’s something, we must trust. We have this thing, in common. It’s part, of who we are. Desire to assist, and protect. Even, without reward. Yes, there are times, you’re selfish. A natural instinct, too. But “being there,” when others need. Something, we-re called to do. These kind acts, are essential. A special purpose, seen. As we do sense, internally. We’re all, part of a team. When you do good, for others. Might not, feel the impact. Yet, a void is filled, inside you. Somehow, the good came back. We cannot help, everyone. And really, that’s OK. For despite, our best intentions. Life does not work, that way. Some people, will reject you. No matter, how you try. Others are slow, accepting help. And some, just sit and cry. But still, you can help many. Kind gestures. Or tough love Words of praise. Perhaps, a firm “no.” A strong jolt. Or a dove. Give them the gift, of your time. Bring calm. Perhaps uplift. Maybe, just sit and listen. Reach out, to those adrift. Focus, upon the children. And those, in pain today. The elderly. The disabled. Or those, who’ve lost their way. The innocent. The victims. The lonely, and depressed. The broken-hearted. Discouraged. Tired souls, in need of rest. Help someone. Each chance you get. Knowing, that this is right. Helping others, makes your life shine. And shares with them, your light. 19
History July 14, 2019 We should not live, in the past. But respect, history. For as things change, we do remain, bound to, humanity. Throughout, human history. A cycle, does repeat. New becomes old. Old become new. In background. Tribal beat. I’m amused, and amazed, by many, ancient predictions. Fulfilled by new, technologies. And countless, inventions. The charismatic leader? New method, or process? Revolutionizing, our lives? New toy, all must possess? These emerge, from past, reborn. In new, and modern ways. Fresh ideas, grown from the soil, of our bygone days. Advancements? Brand new thinking? Address, same basic needs. That have been with us, forever. Motivating, our deeds. History, teaches cycles. Perspective. Understanding. Need to change. And need to maintain. Both linked, to simple things. Simple things, within our lives. To which, we all relate. Hunger, for love and acceptance. The desire, to create. Nourishment, and shelter. Relief, from heat and cold. Material goods. Useful tools. Beauty, to touch our souls Building, of strength and order. To survive, and protect. Search for purpose. Answers. Meaning. The yearning, for respect. Young, wary of status quo. As were the old, when young. In cycles, we all are rebels. Grow wiser, rung by rung. We’ve always done, complex things. To achieve, simple goals. History’s, but a chronicle. Through which, this story’s told. We should not live, in the past. But respect, history. Embrace change, while understanding. Some things, will always be. 20

Ignition July 20, 2019 “We have ignition. Liftoff.” Words, from Mission Control. This expression, translates to me: “Don’t wait, until you’re told.” As I look back, upon my life. At all the things, I’ve done. The key, was how I’d start myself. With each, new rising sun. Did not wait, for someone else. Push me, to get going. Taught myself, to be self-starter. I’d hit the floor, running. No, I was not born that way. Over time, I did learn. First as a student, then soldier. That inside, a fire burned. Fire was desire, to excel. But early on, held back. Should I seize, the initiative? Just sit back? Or attack? I was truly, fortunate. While becoming, a man. Teachers, and senior officers. Provided, helping hand. They gave me, tough assignments. And then, leadership roles. Allowed me, to make decisions. Encouraged, to be bold. Every time, I’d turn around. Responsibilities. Were placed upon, my young shoulders. Challenges, given me. Before long, I was charging. Towards, my lifetime goals. No longer, needed convincing. Was, “going for the gold.” The first step. Daily process. My engine, I’d ignite. Next step: keep the motor running. From daylight, into night. This I would do, every day. Regular, happening. Did not rely, on others to, get me up, and moving. My advice, to you my friend. As each day’s, beginning. Take charge, of your own ignition. Don’t sit around, waiting.

Image February 16, 2019 We all, project an image. With things, we say and do. Some people are, who they seem. Others, image untrue. No image, will be perfect. There’s no need, to ask why. As human beings, we are flawed. No matter, how we try. Still, as much as possible. Your image, should align. With who you are, and what you think. Clear pattern, over time. To some extent, we conform. Our desires, world constricts. Do some things, that just aren’t us. Image… core…in conflict. Yes, we all compromise. To reach, specific goals. In doing, project an image, not rooted in our soul. But if we stray, far away. From whom, we really are. The world will know, and so will we. Inside, there’ll be a war. Those close to us, clearly see. Image, filled with falsehood. Eventually, trust is lost. As reasonably, it should. But worse than that, will happen. Our inner faith, gets lost. Can’t look at ourselves, in mirror. False image, has a cost. Image, must reflect our core. Who we are, shining through. Without this, there’s constant frustration. Our psyche, bruised and blue. Beware, people who push you. To be something, you’re not. You must push back, gently or hard. A little, or a lot. The more, that you operate. With an image, that’s true. More likely, people will trust you. And be accepting, too. If your image, is not you. Re-align, and you’ll see. That this, restores an inner peace. Happier, you will be. This does not, prohibit you, from changing over time. As you mature, image evolves. Often, richly refined. 24
In the Middle November 26, 2018 “Should love others, as yourself.” Normally, good advice. Might not work out, that well because: “Don’t treat yourself, that nice.” Sensing, we should help others. Giving, to many, much. And yet might feel, oddly empty. We’re cold, to others’ touch. You won’t feel, the love you give. Unless, you love yourself. This may seem strange, on the surface. Because, it sounds selfish. Loving “self,” is not selfish. It’s only, where love starts. First accept, then embrace yourself. The horse, before the cart. Once you learn, to love yourself. It becomes, easier. To discover love, for others. How to please them, clearer. Loving “self,” is important. But can, be overdone. Ignoring “self,” is just as bad. When all, is “said and done.” Should not be too, self-centered. Some ways, must be humble. But we should have, a bit of both. Or through life, we’ll stumble. Loving others, important. Do as much, as you should. But don’t smother others, either. That does more harm, than good. Can get caught up, helping all. Becomes, an obsession. So must set, reasonable limits. Important, life lesson. How should you balance, loving? We all, face this riddle. How much for self? And for others? Answer’s, in the middle.

Keys May 30, 2019 Encountered, many locked doors. Throughout, my life’s journey. Some doors, I passed. Others opened. With keys, I found inside me. Within us, there are talents. Most small. But some, are great. We all possess, a ring of keys. Of different sizes, shapes. Every talent, is a key. Only useful, if used. For even when, we have a key. The right door, we must choose. As each of us, moves through life. Utilizing, our keys. Unlocking portals. Discovering. Who we, are meant to be. Our talents, are like new keys. Some do work, right away. Others, must be filed, or refined. Improving, day by day. Skills, developed from talents. Are keys, for tougher locks. As we grow, so do challenges. By stronger doors, we’re blocked. Talents and skills, essential. But there is, one more thing. Experiences, become keys. That compliment, our ring. No matter, how many keys. That we, may have or gain. Talents, skills, and experience. Won’t win us, every game. For not all doors, will open. Some are not, meant to be. Learn patience, and humility. As denied, certain keys. This becomes, a positive. Looking back, we will see. Unopened doors, altered our course. Pointing, to destiny. Do not fear, the obstacles. Nor locks, that might frustrate. Talents, skills, experience. Will open, the right gates. For we all have, a purpose. In which, we can take pride. That true purpose. Our guiding light. A torch, burning inside. When things, aren’t going your way. Trust your keys. Persevere. Establish, your identity. As each new door, appears. 26
Little Things June 22, 2019 Good to have, challenging goals. Big dreams, we should pursue. But often, it’s just the little things. That make, those dreams come true. We’re easily, distracted. By huge, glittery stuff. But big things, won’t happen unless, tiny things, done enough. Must not ignore, simple tasks. Or progress, will get stalled. Our most, important achievements. Begin with things, so small. While this concept, helps at work. Also applies, at home. Common duties, really are, important steppingstones. Key, to lifetime achievement, is getting, small tasks done. Logical order, of actions. From dawn, to setting sun. If you’re consistent, with this. It enhances, career. By nurturing, relationships. Earning respect, from peers. Don’t let your ego, stop you. From ordinary things. Pretending these tasks, “beneath you.” Hard feelings, this will bring. Make time, to do minor jobs. Even, when schedule’s tight. Help others, get through busy days. Together, win the fight. Establish, an environment. With colleagues, family. Where all take part, in common tasks. Building. Bonding strongly. Be fair, when assigning jobs. Balancing, carefully. Give opportunities, for growth. Increase, capacity. Remember, it’s not all on you. On each other, depend. Assist people around you, but, don’t do their work, for them. It is the small steps, you take. That give you, peace of mind. And make you proud, of daily life. Self-image, then will shine. Shoot for the stars. Lofty goals. But still do, normal chores. Little things, will keep you humble. And open, many doors. 27
Louisiana Snow December 8, 2018 Decorating. Christmas tree. Cold outside. North wind blows. Overcast skies. With light rainfall. Louisiana Snow. We enjoy, the holidays. Bright lights, and candy canes. Weather, does not dampen spirits. Learned, to live with the rain. Gulf Coast is our home, of choice. Temperatures, high and low. Any day, might start clear…then wet. Louisiana Snow. Roads get slick, then dry again. As weather, plays its game. Shop for presents. The stores still full. We’re not stopped, by the rain. Skies turn blue. As “fronts” pass through. Despite cold, yards get mowed. Sunny days, starry nights, and then…Louisiana snow. No escaping, all of this. To try, would be insane. We wrap our gifts. Sit in duck blinds. To soft sounds, gentle rain. Chicken, sausage, and dark roux. Grocery list, for gumbo. Weather’s fine, head to store. Driving back…Louisiana Snow. Oh well, that’s just how it is. Know this, will never change. We watch bowl games, and snack away. Not deterred, by the rain. Sometimes, we do get surprised. Sunshine, days in a row. We will rejoice, and do not miss. Louisiana Snow. Other times, it pours for weeks. And yes, we all complain. Then dry and cold, landscape turns brown. Pray for, a little rain. Cajuns, are adaptable. This is, the life we know. The droughts, storms, and winters with, Louisiana Snow. Special Christmas memories. In hearts, these do remain. Many were made, on cold, damp days. With sights, of freezing rain. Our lives, linked to all of this. Despite drizzle, we glow. Our love, our faith, our homes, our friends. Louisiana Snow. 28
Moderate July 12, 2019 Military, veteran. Supporter, of Defense. I am, fiscal conservative. Applying, common sense. And I am, a capitalist. Incentives, for workers. Yet disturbed, with concentrations. Of wealth, control, power. Civil rights, high on my list. Children. Education. Fairness in pay, and good health care. Regardless, of station. Dedicated, to my church. Believe, in rule of law. When voting, rarely mix the two. In both, acknowledge flaws. Yes, I am a moderate. Part of, a dying breed? The truth: there are many of us. We have, the “votes” you need. With close, partisan voting, moderates do decide. Which candidate, will win the race. Which party, gets the prize. If you do, identify, more to the left, or right. I will respect, your position. The things, for which you fight. I also have, strong beliefs. All of us, share that trait. But try to keep, an open mind. Value, civil debate. When I express, opinions. I simply, state my case. Sometimes surprise. Or open eyes. Find I’m, not in your “base.” Perhaps, you will earn my vote. But not, with rhetoric. Nor with insults, or righteousness. Only with, clear logic. I’m not impressed, with slogans. Rallies. Advertising. 24-hour, media. For me, has no meaning. Creative meme, on Facebook? That won’t, win me over. You must dig deeper, with your case. To make me, supporter Yes, I am a moderate. Part of, a dying breed? The truth: there are many of us. We have, the “votes” you need. 29
Outcomes July 31, 2019 What are, the desired outcomes? That question, must be asked. And then, answered very clearly. Not hidden, and not masked. For when outcomes, are defined. All can plan, and design. If outcomes, not clearly stated. Our work, never aligns. If the endgame’s, understood. Then everyone, will know. What will be, expected of them. The growth, that they should show. Process used, to achieve growth, is of great, importance. But outcomes, must be established. For process, to make sense. Express goals, in simple terms. Through spoken word, and print. There must not be, mixed messages. Accidentally, sent. For all, to pull together. Towards, destination. Communication’s, essential. With clear, expectations. First step, always clarity. The next step, loyalty. Outcomes remain, the bottom line. Pathways change, as needed. Circumstances, fluctuate. Methods, can be altered. But outcomes, should be firm and set. That’s, what really matters. Progress towards goals, rarely straight. All must, be flexible. Assess. Adjust. Might zig. Then zag. Analyzing, troubles. The key, is deep commitment. Our strength, must not dissolve. Cannot allow, the ups and downs. To lessen, our resolve. Outcomes, must be paramount. In actions, and in speech. With engaging goals, as our guide, finish line, can be reached. Success, is only measured. By progress, toward these goals. It all starts, with stated outcomes, that are both clear, and bold.

Success and Happiness October 1, 2015 When, I started out in life. I did not, recognize. Success…happiness…not the same. In time, I realized. Took a while, to accept this. Early on. Did resist. That these two things, were not the same. But often, co-exist. For some, success is money. For some, it’s about fame. For some, it’s power or control. For some, winning big games. The money, fame, and power. Or being called, “the best.” These things can define, one’s success. Not always, happiness. Success for me? Achieving. Liked things, very concrete. “Brain” said, this would make me happy. “Heart,” not always agreed. Success, did make me feel good. At least, right at the time. But after, every victory, the joy passed, I did find. So each day, I worked harder. To elevate, success. Perhaps the secret: achieve more. So rarely, would I rest. But life, does not work that way. “Work” didn’t, hit all marks. I did enjoy, what I achieved. Yet inside…remained dark. Happiness, not guaranteed, by concrete, clear-cut goals. Happiness, is a different thing. A warm and glowing soul. The soul, needs love and beauty. It wants you, to accept. It asks you first…to love yourself. Requires you, to reflect. Happiness, requires full life. With failures. And some pain. For both, help you appreciate, the good things, that you gain. Work hard, to achieve your goals. You also, must be kind. Happiness. Success. Can hold hands. Though not, all of the time. So will you, find the balance? Success AND happiness? It can be done, by all of us. Please don’t settle, for less. 31
Test March 11, 2016 From beginning, to the end. Our lives, are filled with tests. Challenges. Opportunities. Some days more. Some days less. Few things in life, are constant. But one thing, you will find. The quizzes won’t stop. Just changes form. Taxing, both heart and mind. We can’t escape, life’s exams. That’s just not, meant to be. Meet them head on. As best you can. With strength, and dignity. There will be times, you’re worried. Fearing results. Hope sinks. Remember, outcomes might not be, exactly what you think. Most times, we will discover. Did better, than we thought. Sometimes it’s true, we did poorly. But next time, success caught. When you score high, will feel good. But doesn’t mean, you’ve won. For a moment, gratifying. But doesn’t mean, you’re done. Those times when, you don’t do well. You still, just might prevail. Winds often change, during journey. Don’t panic. Adjust sails. For short-term grades, can fool you. They seem to look, one way. But over time, picture evolves. Stay patient, through those days. Some tests are fair. Others not. Some do have, great design. While others, just don’t measure up. Built poorly. Unrefined. Understand, “knowledge” exams, don’t measure, everything. Often “a” test, is not “the” test. Life’s how, you deal with things. Your attitude. Endurance. The bell, always answered. How you handle, adversity. Composure. Style. Manner. There is no man-made, measurement. That’s ever, been devised. To show, your true worth. All you know. The value, of your life. Your trials, are not made equal. Some really, matter more. Critical ones, are within you. Reveal you, at your core. 32
Thank You August 2, 2018 I just want to say, “thank you.” To each, and everyone. For all you’ve done, and all you’ll do. From dawn, to setting sun. Never, can be said enough. I do, appreciate. Each smile you share. Encouragements. Trust me, you ALL do rate. I wish, each of you, the best. I want you all, to know. You have support. I’ll cheer for you. No matter, how things go. As you face, your challenges, I’ll praise you, night and day. And as months pass, my pride will grow, as each, will find “the way.” The way, to make things better. The way, to make it through. The way, to keep good perspectives. To find solutions, new. Not all of those, you work with. Will thank you, as they should. But in the end, what matters most…you did do, all you could. Take some time, to thank others. Even if, they don’t thank you. Understand, it is hard for some. Unfortunate, but true. Praised or not, enjoy work. Creating, what should be. For students, parents, and teachers. And for, communities. Find joy. Take pride. Celebrate. Each day, you have the chance. To inspire, fulfill, elevate. To help, many hearts dance.

The First Time February 18, 2018 The first time, that I saw her, she did not, look at me. She had her eyes, on someone else. Was all, that she could see. The first time, asked her to dance, about, one year later. She shook her head, and just said, “No.” I turned around, sadder. The first time, I asked her out. I thought, there might be hope. She seemed to think. Hesitated. But answer, still was, “Nope.” The first time, she did agree. I nearly, dropped the phone. Went to the movie, that she wanted. After, she went straight home. The first time, tried to kiss her, she took, a small step back. It confused her. Mostly because, she hadn’t, considered that. The first time, we went “steady.” Began, to build some trust. And yes, she did enjoy the dates. But still, not serious. The first time, that I proposed. She said, she was unsure. She was not ready, for such things. Had other plans, for sure. The first time, at the altar. Admit, I was surprised. What would she say? She said, “I do.” Agreed, to be my bride. The first time, the bank refused. A loan, for our first home. She reached out gently. Touched my hand. She did not whine, or moan. The first time, she wrecked our car. She cried, all through the night. I held her tight. Kissed her softly. Told her, it’d be all right. The first time, that I left her, going to Vietnam. She got a job. Wrote me each day. With words, both strong and calm. The first time, in hospital. For birth, of our first child. She said, “I’ll not do this again!” Then looked at me, and smiled. The first time, a grandchild born. Our children, heard her say. I am too young, for this to be! Still pride, shown through that day. 34
The first time, no longer worked. Had finally, retired. We cruised, each year, fixed up our home. Love grew, even higher. The first time, was really lost. My mind, drifting away. She understood. She took the lead. She’d prepared, for this day. The first time, intensive care. They told her, I would die. She held my hand, for days on end. They never, saw her cry. The first time, she brought flowers, and sat upon my grave. She wept, and prayed, then talked to me. And this, is what she said. “The first time, that I met you, you weren’t, ‘man of my dreams.’ But life is strange. So many things, are just not, what they seem.” “The first time, I said, ‘I do.’ I’d come, to realize. You were the one. Love of my life. God, had opened, my eyes.” The first time, she shared story. Grandchildren, at her feet. They were amazed, at what she said. About, how we did meet. The first time, they did not know, if the story, was real. But later on, they understood, just how, young love can feel. The first time, that I saw her, knew things, she could not see. That there was no one, just like her. The only one, for me.

Thunderstorm April 13, 2019 The rain, appears suddenly. Thunderstorm, in your mind. Those dark clouds, high winds, and downpours. Occur, from time to time. Often, with little warning. Your thoughts, had been so clear. Then comes, internal rumbling. Brain lightning, raising fears. Most of the time, mind works well. Your attitude, is good. You’re confident, in reasoning. While doing, what you should. But life, is not a straight line. Some things, you won’t control. As the winds of life, grow and blow. Your warm thoughts, turning cold. Your worries, become thunder. Resonating, in you. With peace of mind, dissipating. Mind’s sky, no longer blue. The mind’s storms, can pass quickly. Or linger on, for days. Flooding your thoughts. Obscuring views Blocking, mental roadways. Rain does fall, inside us all. It’s part, of nature’s plan. Often, it will help us grow. With sunshine, hand in hand. But severe storms, do damage. Destructive force, within. You must be, mentally ready. And braced, for all life sends. Do this, by building your life, in strong, positive ways. Take daily steps, doing what’s right. Be steadfast, come what may. This prepares you, for the worst. Helps build, mental toughness. Gives you, a solid foundation. That reinforces, goodness. Makes your character, sturdy. Puts you, on higher ground. Keeping life, more consistent. From blueprint, that is sound. All of these things, do matter. For when, life is not kind. They’ll sustain, and enable you. To endure, stormy times. Enjoy blessings, on your way. Prepare, for mental strife. Pick yourself up, after the storms. Then move on, with your life. 36
Today December 27, 2018 Today, is not yesterday. Turn page. What’s done, is done. Likewise, today’s not tomorrow. That day, might never come. Reflecting, on your past days? Can at times, have value. And dreaming, into the future? Inspires goals, that are new. But reflecting, and dreaming. Won’t get us, anywhere. Unless we focus, on today. With diligence, and care. Make the most, of each new day. The opportunities. Set stage, for a brighter future. The person, you can be. This simple truth, that we know: All we have, is today. We can use it wisely, or not. Defines us, either way. Today’s about, “here and now.” Address, your tasks and chores. Target, most important duties. Do your job. Open doors. Work, is not the only thing. We all, need time to play. Improve our health, relationships. Add balance, to our days. Of course, there’ll be some bad days. Get over it. Move on. Just footnotes, in our history. That’s where, those days belong. Some days, are more demanding. Natural, ebb and flow. Other days, will seem magical. With smiles, success, and glow. Understand, today’s the key. Do not, just sit and dream. Take action, build, and help others. Our mistakes, then redeemed. Embrace, each precious moment. Don’t linger, in the past. Produce today, shining jewels. That is, what today asks.

Tree August 25, 2018 Three words, that work together, are “belief,” “faith,” and “hope.” Through wisdom gained, from these three words. With all things, we can cope. Beliefs are roots, in heart and soul. They anchor, our life’s tree. From them, we gain our nourishment. Enable, us to be. What you believe, in your heart. The starting point, for you. These beliefs, are your foundation. Reasons, for what you do. There’s great power, in belief. Carries us, throughout life. Our beliefs, help us to endure. The trials, pain, and strife. Faith, is how you live your life. Branches, and trunk of tree. As faith evolves, it lifts you up. Also, helps you to see. Our faith guides us, every day. Motivates, our actions. Helps us understand, deal with life. Provides us, with traction. Each of our trees, are different. Because our faith, varies. To some extent, depends, on ground, where roots are buried. Our hopes, are the leaves and fruit. That grow, upon our tree. Hopes, reflect our desires, and dreams. How we, want things to be. We live, through many seasons. Leaves turn brown, and fall. The fruit does ripen. Drops to ground. But still, our trees stand tall. Our hopes may fade, in harsh weather. But return, with the Spring. The leaves will sprout. Our hope renewed. Cycle, life-seasons bring. Storms can come, at any time. Might break, or knock limbs down. If our roots are deep, tree trunk strong, we heal, and then rebound. Trust in “belief,” “faith,” and “hope.” Embrace them, every day. They will sustain, and lead you to, the right place, come what may.

Trojan Horse February 16, 2019 The world, is filled with messages. Speeches, that are bold. Some, delivered eloquently. Others, biting and cold. Most messages, are developed. To convince us, to act. Perhaps, in support of something. Or maybe, to attack. No, not all speeches do this. But oh, so many do. Touching, emotional buttons. Tapping, deep beliefs, too. Some speakers, are very smooth. Others, are blunt and crude. Both styles, are mostly just an act. What works, is what is used. Often, message is packaged, inside, a Trojan Horse. Social media, and commercials. Purpose hidden, of course. TV. Radio. Newsprint. And through, the internet. Round-the-clock, communication. For these, sun never sets. These “pitches,” now pervasive. Use algorithms, too. That target us. Tailored approach. Influence, what to do. The real source, of each message? At times, it might be clear. But much of this, also disguised. By people, far and near. Really, is quite sinister. The way, this game is played. Treated as if, we’re mindless toys. As stakes, are slowly raised. Messages, overt or covert. Should not, replace debate. Manipulations. Trojan Horse. Must not, determine fate. Passionate pleas, can touch us. There’s nothing wrong, with that. Yet need, rational discussion. Centered upon, the facts. Do not fear, the Trojan Horse. Or messages, within. Don’t succumb, to shallow thinking. Or just submit, to friends. There is a process, to which, we must be, committed. Careful research. Opposing views. Reasonably, presented. 39
Victory and Defeat November 12, 2016 “Defeat,” can enter loudly. Or quiet. A soft sound. For all of us, it will arrive. In small ways. And profound. “Victory,” is much the same. Big splash. Or just subdued. We all will taste it, in our lives. Before our days, are through. These two imposters, greet us. And impact, how we feel. But in the end, they’re both the same. Often cloud, what is real. The win. The loss. Important. But do not, end the tale. Both of them, are temporary. Just like “succeed,” and “fail.” They do, have value to us. Motivation, forward. They also can, be troublesome. Both can push us, backwards. How you handle, “ups and downs.” Is still, what matters most. Can’t let a “loss,” paralyze you. Or “win,” cause you to boast. Battles, that you choose to fight. In some ways, define you. “How” you fight, these chosen battles. Does really matter, too. Our lives, are rarely measured. On just, losses and wins. Ethics. Endurance. Have meaning. Strong messages, these send. Wins and losses. Starting line. Not the end, of the race. Should greet success, with humility. And embrace loss, with grace. “Victory,” doesn’t mean you’re right. It only means, you’ve won. “Defeat,” doesn’t mean that you are wrong. Or that your cause, is done. Your next step, is what matters. Just what, will you have learned? From victory? Or from defeat? What is it, you have earned? Between, the wins and losses. You find out, who you are. Evaluate. Plan. Improve. For yourself, raise the bar. Move on. Compete. Do better. Climb to, a higher ground. Do good things. And in good ways. Be stronger, for next round 40
Vote February 22, 2016 It is not, always easy. Responsibility. To take a stand. To cast a vote. In our, democracy. With candidates, and issues. Confusion, often reigns. Simple things, get complicated. Distorted facts. Mind games. Still each person, must decide. What they, believe and feel. Search for truth. Reason through it all. What’s fantasy? What’s real? With candidates, consider. What’s important, to you? Your feelings about, what they say? What do you think, they’ll do? With candidates, consider. Where is, their loyalty? Are they controlled, by something else? Are outside forces, key? Hopefully, you’ll find someone, you sense, that you can trust. Aligns enough, with what you want. Then vote for them, you must. Changes, in laws or taxes? Some problems, might be solved. Of course, change is seldom easy. Takes courage, and resolve. Changes in laws or taxes? Might not, do what they should. Unintended, consequences? Could do more harm, than good? There’ll be different, points of view. There will be, verbal duels. Happens, in a democracy. Majority, will rule. Only thing, that would be wrong. Shirk, from civic duty. When citizens, refuse to vote…outcomes, become faulty. Your candidate. Win or lose. Your vote, was at least earned. That alone, is so important. On votes, history turns. Make a choice. Make your voice heard. Don’t leave things, just to fate. Democracy, will only work. When all, participate.

Want To July 2, 2019 You have to have, some “want to.” My Dad, often told me. Internal drive. Motivation. Move forward, constantly. He had lived, amazing life. From “Great Generation.” Little, formal education. Grew, through “Great Depression.” Lost his mother, early on. Lived a rough, rural life. Survived, gaining blue collar skills. Became young man, with wife. Overseas, in the Army. Through all, of World War II. Then, with Gulf State Utilities. While training horses, too. The hobby, with the horses. Grew into, full-time work. While building a business, from scratch. Family, never shirked. When he, was in his 60’s. Still at it, dawn to dusk. In heat and cold. In rain and mud. Covered, in sweat and dust. Rising up, from poverty. To being, self-employed. For him, it was a dream come true. His job, labor of joy. He had this knack, with horses. Began, when just a boy. Through every phase, of his long life. The work, he most enjoyed. On top of that, had big goals. Always, reaching higher. His “want to,” would not go away. He never, seemed to tire. Another point, made with me. Future, rooted in past. What’s truly desired, as a child. Inspires goals, that can last. The “work” of life, your motor. The “want to,” is the fuel. He showed me, through his example. And with my brothers, too. You can see, this common trait. In all, of our careers. Found motivation, in our youth. That endured, through the years. Dad excelled. In Hall of Fame. Self-made man. Much adored. And each of his boys, found success. With “want to,” at our core. 42
Work January 19, 2016 Each see "work," in their own way. We need not, all agree. Some enjoy, going to their jobs. It’s where, they want to be. For others, job’s just a job. It’s not, a special thing. See work, as a means to an end. A paycheck’s, all it brings. Some do find, their work a joy. It truly, makes their day. Look forward, to the things they do. Their work, seems more like "play." Most see a mix, in their job. Parts good. But some parts, not. Some people, love new “challenges.” Some like, "routines" a lot. Some want, precise instructions. They need, a clear pathway. Others, thrive on innovation. “Must have freedom,” they’ll say. Some like to work, with people. Some prefer, paperwork. Technology is fun, to some. Others? Tech's not a perk. Some people, MUST see progress. In order, to feel right. They spend their day, "measuring" things. Goals always, in their sights. There are those, who are global. View job as deep. Complex. For them, work is a huge puzzle. Use instincts, more than text. Some work, expressing feelings. In, an artistic way. They focus on, touching the soul. Emotions, they relay. "Productivity is key!" For some, they must "produce." Concrete things. Or needed service. Each product, must have use. For some, work tied to ego. “It is, all about ME." Job just used, for personal gain. For them, that's all they see. "Work is for, the social good." Some people, feel that way. Helping others, is what they do. Must save someone, today! "My job, is a ball and chain." That is, how some do feel. They sense they're trapped. Not understood. Their work, has no appeal.
43
A million, different viewpoints. Yet all of these, connect. Our world thrives, on diversity. On that, we should reflect. Finding ways, to coexist. Efforts, we try to merge. Learn from others. Build strong bridges. Allow work, to converge. How we see "work," matters not. Each taking, their own stance. But if we link, all that we do. This world, still has a chance.
