Preface The writings contained in the “Life Lessons” series draw on my personal experiences, lifelong recollections, lessons learned, and acquired knowledge.

These works also come from the heart. They are purposefully filled with emotion.

Therefore, I used poetry for the most part. I am not a poet. Those with expertise in such matters will certainly confirm this. Nevertheless, my use of poetry enabled me to open my heart.

These poems reflect a combination of my observations and experiences in the world at large. Clearly, my personal life colors what I have to say. A few of these poems are written in the “first” person. But most of them speak in terms of “we” or “you,” rather than “I.” The poems are obviously saturated with my personal beliefs and philosophies. I hope the reader will find some small dose of wisdom included in each poem.

Some the poems in Book Three reflect upon the trials encountered during a difficult period of history. The year 2020 brought a global pandemic plus a severe hurricane season that greatly impact life in my region of the world.

Anxiety February 5, 2021 It’s not, a pleasant topic. Your stomach, starts to burn.

Sinking feeling. Stressful event. Your mood, downward does turn.

Anxiety, often caused. By things, we don’t control.

Circumstances. Demands. Conflicts. Unrealistic, goals.

Anxiety, can be brief. But sometimes, it endures.

Might get resolved, rather quickly. Or long time, before cured.

Anxiety, can be quiet. Or it might, loudly rage.

May just hide, in your subconscious. Or pound you, entire day.

Impulses, often triggered. Common sense, gets smothered.

Your logic, and thinking process. Divorce, one another.

Maybe, situations change. Bringing, a solution.

But usually, it’s up to you. To find, resolution.

There is, no silver bullet. But character, is key.

Your strength, gained from adversity. Strong roots, of your life’s tree.

Take control, of emotions. Focus, on the issue.

Do what is right. Do what you can. And to yourself, be true.

Beauty January 13, 2021 Mother Nature, and Mankind. Both uplift, and destroy.

Bringing tranquility, and storms. Confusion, loss, and joy.

On brighter days, it easy. To see, all that is good.

In darkest moments, we struggle. To do the things, we should.

Our minds and eyes, get focused. On ugliness, and hate.

Causing our passions, to blind us. Depleting hope, and faith.

Toughest times, are challenging. But will be, overcome.

Embrace each day. Don’t surrender. The battle, can be won.

Escape the fog, of turmoil. Reach out, for clarity.

Even during, life’s upheavals. World, is filled with beauty.

Big Virus Blues March 25, 2020 I got, dem big virus blues.

I say, dem big virus blues.

Gov’ment says to stay home, in any old room I choose.

I got, dem big virus blues.

Wall Street is going crazy.

The churches and bars, are closed.

People on-line, all of the time.

I’m cooking and washing da clothes.

I got, dem mean virus blues.

I say, dem mean virus blues.

Watching replays, on ESPN…cause I just can’t, stand the news I got, dem mean virus blues.

All the ball players, are sitting.

It might be that schools, are through.

Can’t find, no toilet paper.

So, I’m stocking up on booze.

I got, dem big virus blues.

I say, dem big virus blues.

Gov’ment says to stay home, in any old room I choose.

I got, dem big virus blues.

I’m just paycheck to paycheck.

With holes, in both of my shoes.

That stimulus check, they say that they’ll send.

Is money, my baby will use.

I got, dem mean virus blues.

I say, dem mean virus blues.

Watching replays, of Tigers and Saints…cause I just can’t, stand the news.

I got, dem mean virus blues.

Practicing elbow to elbow.

My hands, I wash all the time.

Walking the kids, in the neighborhood.

And keeping, six feet behind.

I got, dem big virus blues.

I say, dem big virus blues.

Gov’ment says to stay home, in any old room I choose.

I got, dem big virus blues.

Trying, to teach up the children.

The way, that I thought was best.

They roll their eyes, and sneak away.

Get on, that internet.

I got, dem mean virus blues.

I say, dem mean virus blues.

Watching replays, of Hee Haw at night…cause I just can’t, stand the news.

I got, dem mean virus blues.

Gas prices, well they keep dropping.

But we got nowhere, to go.

The Easter Bunny’s, quarantined.

Our chocolate’s, running low.

I got, dem big virus blues.

I say, dem big virus blues.

Chair May 17, 2020 Until you’ve sat, in that chair. You will not, fully grasp.

The challenges, or the pressures. Magnitude, of the task.

For if you’ve never, been there, you’ll have, misconceptions.

The chair, is not that powerful. That’s a false, perception.

Huge, responsibilities. With some, authority.

The influence, over others. Is what, most people see.

The power, that the chair has. Is limited, at best.

By laws, rules, and regulations. By budgets, and requests.

At times, chair is overruled. By those chairs, higher up.

Of course, there will be politics. Often, a bitter cup.

The “buck stops here,” at this chair. So at times, you’ll be blamed.

Even if fault, lies elsewhere. Some critics, can’t be tamed.

Yet people long, for the chair. A goal, in career quest.

Apply for job. Then feel fulfilled. Chosen, above the rest.

It is, an accomplishment. A boost, to the ego.

Yet reality, is waiting. Battles. Failures. Foes.

Most in the chair, will succeed. Despite, all the demands.

Using strength gained, upon their climb. With things, they understand.

At first, chair seems oversized. And not, that comfortable.

Requires hard work. Judgement. Toughness. With mindset, that enables.

There will be trials, and heartache. Stories, that all will tell.

The victories. Both small and large. Disappointments, as well.

At some point, chair becomes home. It feels, more natural.

Doesn’t mean, job gets easier. Must still rise, from each fall.

The chair’s, not for everyone. For some? Their destiny.

Those in the chair, not thanked enough. Nor praised, adequately.

Coach Comeaux March 17, 2020 Measured, in feet and inches. He was not, very tall.

But he had, the heart of a giant. When coaching, basketball.

Competitor. Taskmaster. Yet with, a gentle soul.

He changed the lives, of his players. Their future, he did mold.

Championships. Victories. His story, does contain.

Likewise, heartbreak and losses. Lessons in life, retained.

Like him, his teams were focused. Hard work, and lofty goals.

Did not tolerate, wasted time. He pushed them, to be bold.

Watched him work. And watched them play. My first, five years of teaching.

He mentored me, so carefully. No loud words. No preaching.

He taught me, by example. Just like, he trained his team.

With how, he managed practices. The passion, he would bring.

As time passed, we grew closer. To his office, I’d go.

Bouncing ideas. Asking questions. His answers, thoughtful, slow.

As a young educator. Made my share, of mistakes.

But he never, gave up on me. A difference, he did make.

He knew, just when to lift me. That big smile, he would show.

When I was down, he’d come around. Somehow, he seemed to know.

I recruited, his players. To be, part of my band.

For in them, I saw special things. Instilled, by this good man.

He turned them, into winners. Taught each, to face life’s tests.

Together, they sought excellence. Striving, to be the best.

His teams, and I, do owe him. For pointing out, the way.

Our success in life, enabled. From then, right through this day.

Date June 27, 2020 It was, forty years ago. My life, began to change.

A young man. Who had quit searching. Afraid, to feel more pain.

Had taken chances, on love. It always, fell apart.

A conclusion, had formed in my mind. To build wall. Protect heart.

Successful, in the workplace. Beyond that, had nothing.

Set aside, the personal life. Gave my all, to teaching.

Then she walked, into my world. Full of life. Soft brown eyes.

Tall. Cute. Artistic. Athletic. An unexpected, surprise.

What she saw in me, can’t say. Nothing, I could offer.

Also unsure, what I should do. Her confidence, stronger.

Perhaps, failures in my past. Had tempered, my outlook.

But she intrigued me. Can’t deny. She read me, like a book.

She also took, the first step. Note placed, on my windshield.

Encouraging me, to ask her out. My heart jumped. My head reeled.

I called her up. Made a date. Evening meal, and movie.

Somehow, she saved me, from myself. With one kiss, helped me see.

Should put my past, behind me. And give love, one last try.

Summoning courage, to commit. Final attempt, to fly That one date, made the difference. To this day, can’t explain.

Four decades, further down the road. Shared love and life, remain.

Dawn March 28, 2020 The darkness, would be leaving. Soft light, was coming soon.

Didn’t know, what the day might bring. Awake, in my bedroom.

Yes, I had a plan of course. For me, that is the way.

But the world, and mother nature. Might have, something to say.

With fog, lifting from my brain. I did, inventory.

No big pains, or paralysis. Still had, mobility.

For as, a stroke survivor. Still remember, the day.

When waking, from a fitful sleep. All I could do, was pray.

Selfishly prayed, for myself. And then, for family.

Was going be, a trying time. For them, as much as me.

All in all, was fortunate. Over time, made great gains.

Was able to finish, my career. But never, was the same.

In some ways, I was better. Had, a new perspective.

Learned to take nothing, for granted. Also, more reflective.

As I await, each new dawn. Challenges, expected.

I’ll take my swings. Home runs. Strikeouts. Acceptance. Rejection.

As sun goes down, I seek peace. Stop focusing, on chores.

Set aside, mistakes and worries. Close those, compartment doors.

The key thing, I hope each night. Is that, new dawn arrives.

With one more chance, to get things right. For big goals, I still strive.

Remind myself, the next day’s dawn. Will be, beautiful gift.

So grateful, that I had this day. While off to sleep, I drift.

December 2020 December 1, 2020 A unique year. This has been. One, we will remember.

Pandemic. Hurricanes. And now…a different December.

We’ll still shop, and decorate. Twinkling lights. Christmas trees.

Listen, to seasonal music. Watch movies, on TV. But gatherings, will be small. Events, will be toned down.

As we adjust, and alter things. By some restrictions, bound.

While things are not, just the same. There are, so many ways.

To make this month, very special. And celebrate, each day.

Stay in touch, with the reason. We do this, every year.

Recall, the very first Christmas. Its meaning, remains clear.

The first gift, that we should give, is the heart, within us.

Share your smile, with a warm greeting. One filled, with peace and trust.

Do not ignore, your duties. But also, do make time.

To help. To praise. To embrace life. To laugh, and to be kind.

We won’t escape, all worries. We’re in, recovery.

Despite all this, we can do good. Treat others, graciously.

Open your heart, to Christmas. Reinvent, December.

If you’re not sure, just how to start. As always, love’s the answer.

Extra May 9, 2020 Most people, will do their job. Completing, assigned tasks.

There are some, who will do extra. Even, when they’re not asked.

Doing more, than required? It’s not, universal.

Could be that’s why, it does stand out. Because, it’s not normal.

I have been drawn, into this. But not, naturally.

At first, simply curious. When others, I would see.

Accomplishing, so many things. That was above, the need.

Taking things on. Extra duties. It seemed, part of some creed.

Exceeding, expectations. At each, and every turn.

Perhaps, second nature to them. Or somehow, it was learned.

They have, an internal drive. That has, an added gear.

A motivation, pushing them. Beyond, what’s done by peers.

When first, I tried to do this. Inside, there was conflict.

A boy. A young man. An ego. Spirit, more free than strict.

But was intrigued, by others. Who weren’t like me, at all.

It seemed as if, they were showing me. The right way, to stand tall.

Was really hard, to buy in. Resisted, selfishly.

But gradually, I did become. The person, I could be.

It did take years. Back and forth. The truth, it wasn’t easy.

Baby steps. Growing. Sacrifice. Seeking, maturity.

“Extra,” became a reflex. The matter, was resolved.

“Extra,” is no longer extra. It’s just, how I’ve evolved.

Of course, I do have limits. I know, how to say no.

I won’t do someone’s job, for them. That’s one place, I won’t go.

I’m happy, with the choice I’ve made. Looking back, I can smile.

At all I’ve done. Beyond, the call. Walking, those extra miles.

Goodbye December 28, 2019 This is something, we all do. Happens, every day.

“Goodbye.” To people. Places. Things. Challenges. Yesterdays.

Goodbyes, spoken or implied. Might be, for the moment.

Yet there are times, more serious. Meant to be, permanent.

Goodbyes, mostly, are routine. A polite, ending phrase.

Phone call. Visit. The workday done. Said when, we drive away.

But some goodbyes, are bigger. Beginning, a new phase.

Choosing, different direction. On new goals, set our gaze.

Some goodbyes, will be tearful. Deep sense, of joy or pain.

A conflict, between heart and mind. Or place, we can’t remain.

There are also, “hard” goodbyes. At some point, we endure.

Tough decisions. Made, or imposed. Stressful, and painful cures.

Say goodbye, to each past year. On January one.

To disappointments…achievements. For what is done, is done While putting things, behind us, might bring, some sadness too.

It also can, improve our lives. Creating, a “new you.”

Like a sailor, leaving port. Bound, for distant shores.

We must abandon, safe harbors. For better life, explore.

Our lives, are filled with changes. We leave somethings, behind.

A home. A job. A friend. A love. A different world, we find.

Yet even, after moving on. Saying, final goodbye.

There just might be, a twist of fate. As time, goes rushing by.

A special thing, circles back. Returning, from the past.

We thought that it, was gone for good. But it was meant, to last.

Do not fear, moving forward. Take chances, touch the sky.

But maintain core, of who you are. With every, goodbye.

Guidelines by Pat Deaville February 20, 2021 Our job, can be demanding. But it’s the path, we chose.

As world of work, challenges us. Conditions, get imposed.

Expected, to solve problems. But warned, just don’t do “that!”

Your told, to be ingenious, but also, to hold back.

There’re always rules, to follow. Regulations, applied.

Having guidelines, are a part of life. That cannot, be denied.

Setting, certain rules in place. May, be necessary.

To ensure, that standards are met. Comply, with policies.

On other side, of the coin. Restrictions, might impede.

If arbitrary, or pointless. Like growing, worthless weeds.

A guideline, can be helpful. Or just, get in the way.

It can be, a useful blueprint. Or root cause, of delay.

How our guidelines, are conceived. Is therefore, critical.

Clearly should be, the subject of, a process, logical.

Need insight. Analysis. With input, from below.

Experts, should be consulted too. Drill deep, in what they know.

The more rules, that we create. The more complex, things get.

Might also become, confusing. Get tangled up, in net.

Secret is, have just enough. Should not, be manacles.

Operating more, like guardrails. Rather, than obstacles.

Avoid seeing, all you do. Through, a guideline’s prism.

For that, confines initiative. In, a mental prison.

Focus, on moving forward. Stay within, boundaries.

Balance compliance, with action. Towards success, proceed.

Lessons April 25, 2020 Life tries, to teach us lessons. That sometimes, we don’t learn.

Might not, be paying attention. So later, we get burned.

Or maybe, we do learn it. But forget, over time.

Perhaps the lesson, hides away. Dark corners, in our minds.

We also, get distracted. By bright, and shiny things.

Fail to apply, what we have learned. Pain on ourselves, we bring.

It’s OK, to make mistakes. Life’s filled, with twists and turns.

But always making, same mistakes, means we don’t want, to learn.

Learning does take, some effort. Requires us, to commit.

Must be willing, to make changes. Some impulses, resist.

Life tries, to teach us lessons. That sometimes, we don’t like.

So we’ll pretend, not to notice. Select wrong, over right.

Human nature. Selfish thoughts. We get, set in our ways.

Ignore. Deny. Refuse. Defy. Procrastinate. Delay.

Good lessons. Tough lessons, too. Our hearts, might push away.

We don’t want, to do certain things. So from the path, we stray.

Our progress, rarely steady. As backward steps, we take.

While futures, remain dependent, on choices, that we make.

Life tries, to teach us lessons. Most easy. Many hard.

And the lessons, keep on coming. Each day, life deals us cards.

One hard lesson, is patience. With ourselves, and others.

We must accept, that we’re all flawed. Forgive, one another.

Even when, we disagree. Solve problems, together.

Learning, to build on common ground. We make this world, better.

Life tries, to teach us lessons. But it is up, to us.

To learn. And make the lessons last. Be fair. Be strong. Be just.

Let It Go May 22, 2020 Much in life, temporary. Few things, are meant to last.

Hold on tight, to what means the most. The rest, put in your past.

Your good routines, and habits. You should work, to maintain.

People, who love and support you. Those relationships, sustain.

So much, of everything else. You just, don’t really need.

Some acquisitions, and people. Hurtful, or pointless deeds.

Certain events, in your life. Blend in, to who you are.

But some of what, you will go through. Can become, cold jail bars.

Chaining yourself, to moments. That only, bring you down.

It’s a pattern, you must avoid. Or in regrets, you’ll drown.

Even, cherished memories. Can’t allow, to distract.

For like, security blankets. Feel good, yet hold us back.

Love will likely, challenge you. Some chances, you must take.

Love of your life? Or one-sided? Celebrations. Heartache.

There’s a mix, of joy and pain. You will, experience.

For love, defies most logic. At times, it won’t make sense.

Most need a job, to fulfill, responsibilities.

Might enjoy work…or maybe not. But all, one day set free.

Career could end, gracefully. Or dismissed, thoughtlessly.

You may be praised or rewarded. Or treated, shamefully.

The point is, what you cling to. Becomes, engrained in you.

Embrace the good. Push bad aside. We all, must learn to do.

Resentments. Disappointments. If dwelled upon, will grow.

The toughest lesson, in your life. Is just, to “let it go.”

Let it go. Keep moving. Strive, to make life better.

Lose, the emotional baggage. Keep only, what matters.

Make a Positive Difference February 4, 2021 We all, do have an impact. One way, or another.

Progress or damage. Rapid or slow. Alone, or together.

Your life, is never neutral. We’re all, participating.

With things we do. And things we don’t. Working. Thinking. Changing.

We can’t escape, nor evade. The part, that each does play.

Our best efforts, or lack thereof. Are always, on display.

The biggest, and the smallest. Both elite, and common.

Alter the world, in each their way. Before, their life is done.

Starts with choices, we all make. Selecting, path to take.

But regardless, of road chosen. Some mark, each one will make.

And each mark, has importance. Obvious or subtle.

A tidal wave, with big headlines. Or, a gentle ripple.

World impacted, by us all. I say, without pretense.

It’s up to us. Get it right. Make, a positive difference.

Moment May 2, 2020 At a certain, point in life. We all, will face a test.

A moment arrives, upon us. Different, from the rest.

Average days, are challenging. Mostly, in simple ways.

Little things happen. New tasks too. Forced, to alter our day.

But sometimes, we’re blindsided. A surprise, life has sent.

Could be, series of obstacles. Our pathway, blocked or bent.

These tougher times. Important. For they provide, training.

Giving us skill, and confidence. Special strengths, we’re gaining.

These strengths, are for that moment. Which truly, measures you.

When all you’ve learned, and have endured. Is what, can get you through.

You might not seek, the moment. But it, will still find you.

It penetrates, into your life. Changes, what you must do.

When you, are in that moment, just how, will you respond?

Will you rise? Embrace the challenge? Reach, “above and beyond?”

When the moment, is over. Was the challenge, answered?

Did you do, what was needed most? Could you, have done better?

Success, is not guaranteed. Might not, have measured up.

Too passive? Left it to others? Refused, to drink from cup?

Did you choose, to persevere? Alone. Or with a team.

And through the darkness, thrown at you. Shown bright, like lighthouse beam.

How we handle, our moment. Is not, “one size fits all.”

For each, a different story told. Unique ways, to stand tall.

No two people, are the same. That is not meant, to be.

But all of us, do share this fate. Someday, each one will see.

Biggest moment, in their life. Within, that timeframe, find.

What they are made of. Who they are. By what they do, defined.

North Star February 6, 2021 There is a North Star, shining. It’s there, for all of us.

Illuminating, the mind’s sky. Revealing, what is just.

Some, will find it early on. For them, easy to see.

Others confused. A billion stars. So many, galaxies.

Even when, it is spotted. It just might take, some time.

To discipline ourselves, towards it. There’s weakness, in our minds.

The North Star, can be obscured. By life’s, demanding sun.

On stormy nights, filled with pain. From North Star, we might run.

But North Star, remains stable. Stays with us, come what may.

While humans often, bounce around. In awkward, complex ways.

We are driven, to do things. That are, not always right.

We rationalize. Justify. Put North Star, out of sight.

The North Star, does not scold us. Nor issue, punishment.

It simply, maintains position. Same message, always sent.

Our path, is often rocky. The journey, can be long.

But if we’ll aim, for the North Star. We won’t do much, that’s wrong.

If you have lost, the North Star. The one thing, I will say.

It is still there, glowing brightly. It’s you, who’s looked away.

Patience and Persistence October 28, 2020 Both patience, and persistence. Are equally, required.

When facing, big adversities. Or in disasters, mired.

You won’t control, everything. There will be, some waiting.

Despite this, you must take steps. Even if, it’s planning.

You do control, many things. Including, attitude.

Start doing. Every way you can. Draw on, your fortitude.

Disappointments, come and go. Don’t stop, turning pages.

Displaying, determination. Make progress, in stages.

Be understanding, of others. But be demanding, too.

Cooperate. Reach out. Inspire. Influence, what they do.

Don’t always sprint, down this road, towards recovery.

For this is more, a marathon. Endurance, will be key.

Be patient. Do not anger. While you, keep on trying.

Be persistent. Stay positive. Always upward, flying.

Plan B February 15, 2020 Plan B. Being flexible. Wasn’t easy, for me.

Plan A was firmly, in my mind. How I’d want things, to be.

Took years, defeats, and lots of pain. Before, coming around.

Accepting, the reality. To one plan, can’t be bound.

I’ve always, been a planner. With drive. Self-confidence.

Determined, focused, and headstrong. Straight forward. No pretense.

Mostly, this had worked for me. Of course, not all the time.

And when I failed, was so confused. Why life, had been unkind.

The truth, was hard to accept. Was afraid, to adjust.

Needed to listen, more often. In others, I must trust.

Plan A, was not the problem. The problem, was in me.

I had to take, my blinders off. A broader picture, see.

You must, have faith and courage. In order, to succeed.

You must also learn, from others. Sound advice, seek and heed.

Best plan, to achieve your goals. May be, inside of you.

But don’t be afraid, to research. Observe, what others do.

Give your plan, some time to work. It may turn out, just fine.

Just needs, small modifications. To fit, the changing times.

Your plan, might be a good one. But is it, the best way?

Others may be, passing you by. While in a rut, you stay.

It’s better, to make changes. Than have Plan B, imposed.

You might not even, have a choice. Some things, you don’t control.

Progress involves, many things. We all, must understand.

Being self-reliant, is great. But reach out, all you can.

Your plan, and you, can improve. Don’t be afraid, to try.

Find worthy mentors. Caring friends. Learn when, to swallow pride.

Professional June 23, 2019 You, are a professional. With all, that it entails.

As a teacher, you are challenged. By human storms, and gales.

You, are a professional. It’s not, a “sometime” thing.

You’re always tested. Daily grind. Adjustments, each day brings.

You, are a professional. In good times, and in bad.

Share moments, with many students. Some joyful, others sad.

You, are a professional. You dress, and act the part.

You’re, a positive role model. Inspiring, many hearts.

You, are a professional. Honest. Reliable.

You are on time. Very prepared. Excellence, enable.

You, are a professional. Each day, bring energy.

Uplift, correct, engage, and lead. The best, that you can be.

You, are a professional. You grow. Experiment.

Learn from those, who’ve paid their dues. Who did not break, when bent.

You, are a professional. Improving, is the goal.

Giving guidance, to your students. Each day, their futures mold.

You, are a professional. In language, and in speech.

Demonstrate, through your high standards. Levels, others much reach.

You, are a professional. You don’t dwell, on mistakes.

Make progress, based on positives. Do, whatever it takes.

You, are a professional. Clock, is not your master.

Focused on achievement. Outcomes. Not, just working faster.

You, are a professional. Emotions, you control.

Quiet Time at Christmas December 8, 2019 Quiet time. Being alone. Is important, to me.

Does not mean, I’m anti-social. Or acting, selfishly.

Alone, does not mean loneliness. Or ignoring, duties.

But slowing down, looking inward. Making world, less crazy.

The holidays, are hectic. Shopping. Helping others.

Home decorations, cards, and tree. Food baskets, deliver.

Love, being with family. They mean, the world to me.

Our time together, fulfilling. With feelings, flowing free.

Value, my friends and colleagues. With strong, and lasting bonds.

Enjoy church services. Parties. And programs, filled with song.

Still, I need to be alone. For moments. Or a day.

To pull myself, back to center. In very, simple ways.

It’s important to schedule, some quiet time, for me.

Go walking, in the chilly air. Watch movies, on TV. Other times, just need to sit. Alone, in solitude.

Dwelling, on meaning of Christmas. Restoring, attitude.

Reconnect, with who I am. My core thoughts, and desires.

Identify, with my own self. Rekindle, my own fire.

Reflect upon, what I’ve done. The errors, and the good.

Make sense, of what I need to do. Adjust, in ways I should.

Turn down the noise, around me. Turn down the noise, inside.

Surrender, to that softer voice. That deep in me, resides.

Alone, I find my compass. True north, it points the way.

Corrects life’s map, and lights a path. Brightens, my holiday.

Renew February 27, 2020 Lent is about, many things. For me, these forty days.

Involve stoking, a fire inside. And building, on my faith.

When I was, an altar boy. A priest, gave me this thought.

Don’t see Lent, as a painful time. “Renew.” Is what he taught.

Observe fasting. Church teachings. Take time, each day to pray.

Then take concept, of sacrifice. And view it, a new way.

We are called, to do much more. Than just give up, some things.

We’re asked, to give more, of ourselves. To others, comfort bring.

Lent is not, a time to cry. Or wear, permanent frown.

By doing good, in your small world. Deeper faith, can be found.

Help someone, really in need. Sacrificing, your time.

Sharing your skills, and energy. Touch a soul. Ease a mind.

If you must, deny yourself. Think about it, this way: Deny yourself, of selfishness. Focus on that, each day.

Dreaming less, of what you want. Or, of compensations.

Try listening more. Speaking less. In, your conversations.

Uplift, and encourage those, who are, enduring pain.

Donate a part, of what you have. Spread love, like gentle rain.

Kind actions, elevate hope. For others, and for you.

By giving freely, of yourself. Your soul, will be renewed.

Role November 7, 2018 Our lives, do go through stages. We take on, many roles.

Some, we select. While other times, we just do, what we’re told.

Careers will ask, much of us. As will, our families.

Our egos, also get involved. In choosing, who’ll we’ll be.

Some of our roles, we cherish. We’re always, wanting more.

Others, we find troublesome. They’re burdens. Tiresome chores.

There are some roles, that grow on us. As we mature. Evolve.

Absorb these roles, into our life. As conflicts, gets resolved.

There are some roles, we desire. Connected, to our core.

Still others fade, as we grow old. With these, we become bored.

Most of the time, we juggle. Various roles, and tasks.

We lead and follow and support. Often, a mixture asked.

Trust, this simple formula: There are, three things to do.

Understand, accept, and perform. Each role, that’s given you.

First, must strive to “understand.” The details, of the role.

Most roles, require certain skills. Pursue these, being bold.

“Accepting” roles, must be done. An important, next step.

Without, high-level commitment. Results, we’ll never get.

Then can come, the final step. “Performance,” is the key.

In the end, this matters the most. Tasks done, effectively.

When performance, is lacking? Role doesn’t seem, to fit?

Understanding and acceptance. Are, the likely culprits.

Unless first two steps, achieved. The final step, won’t be.

Learn vital skills. Fully commit. Performance, then you’ll see.

Smile January 25, 2020 It’s well within, your budget. It doesn’t, cost a thing.

A smile, is almost magical. The feelings, it can bring.

A smile, can be the spark plug. That ignites, your whole day.

It can also touch, those around you. Brightening things, you say.

Some smiles, might reflect outcomes. Or something, you have done.

Or you can simply, choose to smile. Envision work, as fun.

Happiness, can be a choice. Creating, your own mood.

Smiling, can uplift your spirits. Like soul-enriching food.

We all, do have a “game-face.” Project, seriousness.

We’ll frown and squint. Distort our face. When facing, certain tests.

If that’s how, you always look. It will, come at a cost.

Suppressing, all the joy inside. Your “happy” life, gets lost.

Constant scowling, builds a wall. Between, you, and others.

Colleagues, family, friendships suffer. Relationships, smothered.

Yes, there are special moments. When smiling, is not right.

A time, a place, a tragedy. Events, more dark than light.

But most days, are not like that. Happiness, is waiting.

Like a door, you need to open. The first step, is smiling.

At night, take inventory. Of just how much, you smiled.

Are you shocked; how little it was? Been going on, a while?

Start day, with a little grin. Focus, on your blessings.

Awkward at first, but you will find. A sense of peace, growing.

Commit, to making a change. Refresh, internal child.

Don’t waste your life, looking angry. Remind yourself, to smile.

Solution April 18, 2020 Despite, all we are doing. Accept, reality.

When we return, to normalcy. Big learning gaps, we’ll see.

What will be done, to fix this? What’s, the resolution?

“Teachers, will teach. Students, will learn.” That, is the solution.

By no means, is this simple. We all know, it’s complex.

But it is not, impossible. It just requires, our best.

Indeed, there are obstacles. Our world, is not the same.

But we can do, what must be done. Stay focused. Up our game.

The keys, to education? The strengths, that do remain.

Are human beings. Their resolve. And how, they use their brains.

Don’t doubt, our resourcefulness. The ways, we’ll innovate.

Our challenges will be met, head on. Right out, the starting gate.

Our first days back, in the schools. Should allow, for bonding.

The second step, is to assess. Then, crank up the teaching.

Assess, at the start of school? That is not, something new.

Discovering, what students know. We always, have pursued.

But this year, will be unique. Variances, profound.

Levels of knowledge. Skills. Concepts. From much, we must rebound.

For all of this, to happen. When students, do arrive.

The adults, must take many steps. Good plans, that come alive.

Before, the buildings open. Prepared, internally.

Behind the scenes, tackle the tasks. The public, never see.

And yes, the economy. We’ve been through this, before.

Adjust. Adapt. Just find a way. Till budgets, get restored.

But in the end, what matters? What’s, the resolution?

“Teachers, will teach. Students, will learn.” That, is the solution.

Soul November 3, 2019 We all, are on a journey. Through life. Perhaps, beyond.

We do live, knowing, in the end. To death’s call, all respond.

Our bodies, are but vessels. Sailing, across waters.

The length of the crossing, unknown. Distance, will not matter.

The three things, that do matter. First, how we live our lives.

Next, is accepting life will end. Then, how our souls survive.

Know, our physical bodies. Revert to ashes, cold.

But deal with, a big mystery. Destination, of souls.

What becomes, of our essence? The soul, within us all.

Existence beyond, mortal world. Other side, of the wall.

There are those, who refute this. “The soul, is just a myth.”

“We are simple organisms. Life ends, with death. That’s it.”

I can’t claim, I know for sure. And won’t assert, I do.

But still I sense, deep within me. The afterlife, is true.

World religions, preach to us. Many, different outcomes.

Philosophers and scientists. Their theories, wildly run.

In the end, each one of us. Will make up, our own mind.

What we believe, about all this. Conclusion, each will find.

We may be right. Might be wrong. But still, each one decides.

The course they choose. The faith they have. Which pathway, is their guide.

I struggle, with these concepts. Yet somehow, I believe.

Human life ends. Our souls move on. To higher plane, received.

If I am right, we’ll exist. Beyond, this world of strife.

If I am wrong, I’ll still be proud. Of how, I’ve lived my life.

Spirit March 15, 2020 Throughout her life, Virgie Dronet has been a role model and inspiration. Just when we think this master teacher has taught us all she can, she gives us another lesson on the depths of the human spirit. This one is for you, Virgie. Thank you, for the examples you continue to give to all of us.

Do not, underestimate. The strength, you have inside.

In each, and every one of us. Human spirit, resides.

Both triumphs, and tragedies. Each one of us, will see.

Exhilaration, and sorrow. Do visit, you and me.

Through all of this, we are shaped. By the choices, we make.

For outlook…determination. More important, than fate.

When we’re on top, succeeding. Should show, humility.

Celebrate, appropriately. Never, arrogantly.

Enjoy life. Strive for success. Working, for a balance.

Maintaining, sense of who we are. Building, self-reliance.

Accept, there is a cycle. There will come darkness…rain.

Like high mountains, and low valleys, that form, the world’s terrain.

No one likes, to be in pain. And no one, likes to fail.

Yet circumstances, beyond us. Can lead us, down rough trails.

During, difficult moments. External life, may change.

The secret then, must look within. A source of strength, remains.

Human spirit, still is there. Just waiting, to be called.

Push aside, your doubts and worries. Climb over, mental walls.

Many, suffer more than you. And still, they overcome.

Their stories, inspirational. They show us, how it’s done.

Staying Home April 5, 2020 I’m “staying home,” with Grandma. I’m not sure, what that means.

Mommy says, it’s for the best. This virus, is so mean.

My Daddy’s, in the army. In some place, called Iraq.

Mommy’s a nurse, for sick people. She works shifts, back to back.

My Grandma, is very nice. She cooks, and feeds me well.

But I miss my home, and my Mommy. And my little cat, Belle.

Belle, has always slept with me. Doesn’t, have any fleas.

But Mommy says, she can’t be here. Grandma, has allergies.

Don’t go to school. Or ride bus. Or get to see, my friends.

Grandma says, I should not worry. For some day, this will end.

My Grandma, has a garden. In the yard, are flowers.

I help her pull out, the tall weeds. Then, I help her water.

Grandma, has a computer. So I can play, some games.

My teacher, sends some things to do. But it, is not the same.

Always need help, to do things. And Grandma, really tries.

I work, and do the best I can. Last night, I saw her cry.

My Mommy, came to see me. Wearing gloves, and a mask.

She would not let me hug, or kiss. Why not? I had to ask.

Said again, it’s for the best. So much, I do miss you.

You must be brave. One day you’ll see. We’ve done, what we must do.

Some of this, confuses me. Can all of this, be true?

Mommy just says, I must be strong. My Grandma, says that too.

At night, I do say my prayers. Stay quiet. Not a peep.

If I get lonely, when it is dark. I’ll think of Belle, asleep.

I can’t say, I am happy. But I’m not, really sad.

I just feel lost. Don’t understand. Why things, must be so bad.

Stop June 9, 2019 There are times, when you should stop. You really, need to rest.

May be, that your body’s worn out. Outcomes far, from your best.

Physical fatigue. One factor. Not only, measurement.

The mind, can become exhausted. Thus impairing, judgement.

The mind and body, are linked. Each, impacts the other.

When one is tired, the other knows. Both of them, then suffer.

The spirit, also weights in. Though our, psychology.

Attitude, and motivation. Altering, all we see.

Weary spirit, brings us down. Dragging, body and mind.

Impairs outlook, and perspective. Leading, to thoughts unkind.

Need, a strong work ethic. To attain, worthy goals.

But work ethic, can mislead us. For glitter, sell our soul.

For some, “stopping” can be hard. Requires, blending of traits.

The “will to work” and “will to halt.” “To push on” and “to wait.”

Of course, at times, we do push through. Crisis. Emergency.

Take pride, enduring tough stretches. “Can always, count on me!”

But often, manufactured. Crisis, does not exist.

As others, able to fool us. Some ploy, we can’t resist.

We also do, trick ourselves. Bypassing, reasoning.

With unrealistic, timelines. Importance, pretending.

Stopping, is not laziness. Nor, a character flaw.

Stopping, is a positive step. Prevents, the final straw.

Disengage, from work routine. Find peace. Have some, recreation.

Sleep, relax, and enjoy yourself. Embrace, fun distractions.

You will know, time to return. With energy, renewed.

Might not, look forward to the grind. But to goals, remain true.

Struggle June 8, 2019 You will struggle, all your life. As each new stage, unfolds.

This is a form, of exercise. For body, mind, and soul.

The struggle, is not failing. Nor does it mean, you’re weak.

The struggle, is what must be done. To reach, achievement’s peak.

Your struggle, is natural. A normal, human thing.

Key component, in life’s process. With time, reward, it brings.

The struggle, helps make you strong. Can also, make you wise.

It will teach you, great humility. Cut ego, down to size.

Struggles, force you to face things. And learn, from your mistakes.

Pushes you, to be more human. To others, you’ll relate.

Struggling, aides with bonding. A building block, for teams.

Teaches you, about forgiveness. Empathy, becomes keen.

It is very important. To accept, the rugged climb.

Maintaining, strong self-confidence. Solutions, you can find.

There will be, moments of joy. Success. Celebration.

Depth, of your struggles, will enhance, your sense of elation.

Don’t spend your life, just whining. Complaining, how life’s tough.

Your troubles and trials, are needed. With tasks, demanding, rough.

Walk the path, of champions. Big challenges, do face.

Must stretch yourself. Endure the pain. And then, increase your pace.

The struggle, won’t be pleasant. Will knock you down, often.

Pick yourself up. Start moving on. Don’t let resolve, soften.

Struggle, is your drill sergeant. Your, personal trainer.

And it will drive you, constantly. Until, potential’s gained.

Sunrise March 8, 2020 My functional, depression. Returns, from time to time.

Just like, an uninvited guest. Who’s not, a friend of mine.

It first arrived, in college. Stayed with me, for a while.

Achieved greatly, despite it. But rarely, did I smile.

Deep inside, was strangely sad. Confused, in soul and mind.

I never could, pinpoint the cause. Told others, I was fine.

Kept hoping, with each sunrise. That it, would go away.

One day, it was lifted from me. Why it left? I can’t say.

The next few years, were happy. Following, that sunrise.

But the depression, did come back. To cut me down to size.

Despite success, in teaching. A dark mood, captured me.

Once again, painful upheavals. The reasons? Couldn’t see.

Kept working. Tried to hide it. From students, and colleagues.

But when alone, or at day’s end. The hurt, was there in me.

It lasted, for several years. These feeling, could not tame.

Then out of the blue, a sunrise, unexpectedly came.

And that’s, my secret story. Throughout, my adult life.

Keep going, working, and doing. Despite, internal fights.

There’s always been, a sunrise. To save me, from the pain.

I do not, understand all this. But know, no one’s to blame.

Mental health, is tricky. So much, hidden within.

Over the years, I’ve learned to cope. Sunrises, help me mend.

Depressions do, come and go. Accept, they always will.

Still, my life’s been blessed. Beautiful. So many dreams, fulfilled.

Team November 10, 2019 We are, individuals. Yet bonded, together.

For all our lives, are connected. One way, or another.

Each of us, responsible, for what we say, and do.

But our actions, also weave into, the lives of others, too.

We find ourselves, on many teams. In assorted groups. Crews.

Neighborhoods, schools, churches, careers. Ideologies, too.

Our family, friends, and colleagues. Are also, on these teams.

Each member, has a unique role. With their own song, to sing.

Sometimes, you’re the soloist. Backed by, human chorus.

But when your voice, joins harmony. Blending, becomes a must.

We all have, a time to lead. And a time, to follow.

You won’t always, carry the ball. Selfish pride, must swallow.

Learning, to assist others. When it’s their time, to shine.

Willingly, give up the spotlight. Supporting role, you find.

We can open, the pathway. Help others, reach their goal.

Building pride, in team achievements. Great attitude, we mold.

While all this, is common sense. There also, is a warning.

“The more you do…the more expected.” Teams, become demanding.

You cannot star, on every team. Or carry, every load.

You can’t give equally, to all teams. You can’t, pave every road.

Balance, gets complicated. On many teams, we play.

Each team wants, our time and effort. Requests, come every day.

These teams often, will compete. Seeking, our loyalty.

A back-and-forth. Push-and-pull. Demands, assignments, pleas.

Overwhelmed? Or stressed by this? You must, look deep inside.

Establish, your priorities. And set some things, aside.

The Crew December 1, 2018 Most of us, do have a “crew.” A small, group of people.

Comprised of family, friends, colleagues. So precious, and special.

Countless people, cross our path. But few, stay in our world.

Often, find our “crew,” by chance. As the winds of life, swirl.

Can’t plan, this sort of bonding. Or method, calculate.

This blending, of mind and spirit. Is more, matter of fate.

What does create, lasting bonds? Is it, shared endeavors?

More likely, something deep inside. That links us, forever.

May not see it, right away. But feel it, over time.

Or perhaps a spark, from the start. A kinship, we do find.

Time does not, erode these bonds. Years, just make them stronger.

And we don’t feel, truly complete. Unless, we are together.

Each visit’s, an adventure. Part familiar, part new.

Talk and eat and shop and sightsee. And share, our concerns too.

Treasure, countless memories. Love making, new ones too.

Can’t imagine, what it’d be like. To be, without this “crew.”

Life is full, of twist and turns. Nothing, is guaranteed.

For now, must make the most, of this “blessing,” we’ve received.

Take the time, to stay in touch. And share, both thoughts and dreams.

Then come together, every chance. Enjoy pleasure, it brings.

For it is clear, in our hearts. Something, we can’t deny.

That we are at, our very best. When we stand, side by side.

The Santa Question December 10, 2019 What should we buy, for Grandma? She never gives a clue.

What is, the “trendy” gift right now? Which cellphone, is most new?

How much, should we spend this year? Perhaps, we should scale down?

Do we still, want to do turkey? With fixings, all around?

Just how much, should we cook? Do we know, who’s coming?

Where did we put, that ornament? Is the doorbell, ringing?

Where did we hide, that present? Are we out, of ribbon?

Why do these lights, keep burning out? There has to be, a reason.

No, young lady. Can’t wear that. What time, is midnight mass?

I mean, when the choir starts singing? Did you fill the car, with gas?

Christmas questions, fill the air. Repeated, every year.

These most, traditional queries. We all, expect to hear.

But what, is asked most often? To both, the young and old.

Do you believe, in Santa Claus? And things, you have been told?

Legend, of St. Nicholas. And how, this has evolved.

The sleigh, the elves, and the presents. How is this, all resolved?

The answer, is quite simple. The question, is what’s flawed.

Does Santa Claus, believe in you? Now that, should give you pause.

The root concept, of Santa. Is not, about the toys.

It’s about, who is deserving. Rewarding them, with joy.

What have you done? Or become? That warrants, Santa’s touch.

What have you shared, or sacrificed? And if so, just how much?

Don’t try, to explain Santa. For that, is not the key.

Focus on, what you say and do. The person, you should be.

These Challenging Times June 26, 2020 Focused, flexibility. Our world, does now require.

Adjust each day, transitioning. Without losing, the fire.

Minds kept, on our purpose. The children. Their future.

The mission itself, is unchanged. The core of this, endures.

How should, we go about this? Challenge, seems so immense.

The truth. No one can do it all. Takes teamwork. Common sense.

We are, the difference makers. Each one, must share the load.

Despite discomfort. Confusions. Conquer, this twisted road.

Innovation. Adapting. Taking on, new training.

We’ve always, modified methods. But now, vastly expanding.

Shifting, guidelines and signals. Add to, uncertainty.

Planning, for what we do not know. Stressful, internally.

Complaints, plus criticism. Disagreements. Mistrust.

These will occur. Part of the job. Loud voices. Public fuss.

Leadership, will pull us through. Maintaining, a vision.

Sustaining, a calm demeanor. Positive, positions.

Focus, on the key things. Keeping, an open mind.

Listen. Study. Deliberate. Solutions, we will find.

Being flexible, valued. It’s always, been that way.

This skill, must be fully embraced. Applied, to every day.

There won’t be, a perfect plan. But there can be, progress.

The limitations, of resources? Find ways, to pass that test.

Later on, when we look back. At how, we measured up.

Were we focused, on our mission? Yet flexible, enough?

Mishaps. Mistakes. May happen. But we, can still succeed.

With focused, flexibility. The courage, to proceed.

Trial January 9, 2020 Just when you think, you’ve made it. There comes, another trial.

When everything’s, going your way. Just wait, a little while.

For challenges, are brewing. And will arrive, in time.

And when they do, they’ll measure you. Your character, defined.

The trial, is not the definition. Of who, you really are.

It’s the manner, in which you engage. And how, you fight your war.

We can’t fulfill, potential. Without facing, these tests.

The fire, from these encounters. Needed, to be our best.

We may not like, the pressure. Or wish, to fight the fight.

But our trials, are a requirement. The darkness, before light.

We seek, pleasure and comfort. Sailing, on calmer seas.

But it’s the wind, rain, and huge waves. That strengthens, you and me.

Do not complain, or grumble. Tough times, will come and go.

And blessings, will be your reward. Good times, again will flow.

Ups and downs, are natural. With tension, and release.

Like night and day, our lives rotate. Between, struggle and peace.

Try February 5, 2020 Imagine how, world should be. We do this, all the time.

Each of us, has our own vision. With everything, in line.

But that’s, not reality. A different world, we find.

How things, should be. And how, they are. Often, do not align.

Some seven billion, people. Are playing, in life’s game.

And while, we are all similar. No two, are just the same.

We each, are on a mission. To alter, those around us.

To shape the world, to suit ourselves. Debate, argue, and fuss.

Sometimes, we seek consensus. Looking, for common ground.

Family. Tribes. Nations. Allies. To certain visions, bound.

It’s called, civilization. And often, it’s a mess.

“Common ground,” is not always firm. When facing, real-world tests.

Factions form. Divisions too. We fight, internally.

Unity, becomes delicate. The cracks, easy to see.

Then quickly, our actions change. Offer, a helping hand.

Emotions, rise and fall like tides. They’re hard, to understand.

Like when we face, larger threat. We seem, to find a way.

Commit ourselves. Pull together. Lift others, through rough days.

Back and forth. Unite. Divide. A roller-coaster ride.

Might make progress. Cooperate. Then suddenly, collide.

The only thing, we have learned. The one thing, we must do.

Discover ways, to balance out. Our different, points of view.

The worst thing, that we can do. Is scream and pout and cry.

Despite the fact, we want our way. Together, all must try.

Try, to stay positive. Try, to find solutions.

Engage. Listen. Think. Respond. Seeking, resolution.

The virus, plays by its own rules. As graphs go up, then drop.

Pandemics, don’t read reports. Or click, computer links.

Pandemics, don’t track statistics. Nor care, what we might think.

The virus does, what it wants. While we do, what we can.

We study, research, and worry. Distance. Wear mask. Wash hands.

Covid-19, does not speak. It can’t, play politics.

Does not connect, with our desires. Ignores, economics.

We plan for outcomes, unknown. The virus, has no plan.

We revise, adjust, and pivot. Debate. Argue. Take stands.

Despite, the stress and damage. The deep, financial cost.

Science and time, are on our side. Even, as lives are lost.

The day will come. This shall pass. Find, some normalcy.

But there’ll be, visible changes. Affecting, you and me.

Perhaps, there is a lesson. Realization, large.

The ultimate update, is this. Humans, are not in charge.
