Message from CEO Welcome In positive news the PCYC Emergency Services Cadets (ESC) program has been funded for a further three years by Queensland Fire and Emergency Services, with the recent announcement of a further $2 million commitment till 2024.

Congratulations to the ESC team for hosting the Brisbane Cadet Games at PCYC Sandgate on 19th June involving 162 cadets from across the state, we look forward to the Townsville Cadet Games at PCYC Townsville on 17th July.

As the Check In Qld app is now mandatory in gyms and recreation facilities, please be reminded that ALL staff, visitors and members to PCYC Queensland clubs must sign in using the new QR codes provided.

PCYC Queensland Corporate Golf Day PCYC Queensland held its annual Corporate Charity Golf Day in May at McLeod Country Golf Club in Mount Ommaney, with 20 corporate teams and sponsors joining us on the day.

Thanks go to Major Sponsors BDO and Sci-Fleet for their ongoing support, Hole Sponsors Austbrush, Schweppes, Life Fitness, BMS Group and JACL Enterprises, and to all our staff and volunteers who helped deliver another great day raising funds for PCYC Queensland.

Thanks also go to prize donors for providing great raffle prizes and giveaways on the day, including from Brisbane Racing Club, Pandora, Brisbane Broncos and Queensland Reds, Free 2 Travel, Sit Down Comedy Club, Lavazza Coffee and Deep Grey Photography. Congratulations to PCYC Mount Isa for taking out several awards at the 7th Mount Isa Community Services Ball! Chillin’ in the Park won the Community Services Event of the Year, Senior Constable Aimee Sewell was awarded the Outstanding Community Worker of the Year, and volunteer Margie Rogers was awarded the Community Services Customer Service Award.

PCYC Cloncurry Fight Night PCYC Cloncurry held a fantastic 2021 Fight Night, displaying an amazing blend of youth development, community participation, family fun and explosive boxing action. PCYC Napranum launch Braking the Cycle Changing Gears

PCYC Mount Isa Barista Boys Get Set for Work

With support and funding from Rio Tinto and Motor Accident Insurance Commission (MAIC), PCYC Napranum successfully launched Braking the Cycle Changing Gears on 28th April.

PCYC Mount Isa’s Get Set For Work program recently helped the ‘Barista Boys’ to successfully achieve their goals, with all of them securing employment after the program and received certificates of attainment towards their Certificate II in Hospitality.

Adapted to support the cultural and learning needs of Indigenous Australians living in remote communities, Braking the Cycle Changing Gears will initially be offered as a pilot program at PCYC Napranum, with plans to expand to other communities as the program is established.

We thank all the boys for the wonderful coffee services provided to the community and wish them every success in their future endeavours!

Boxing program for young Indigenous students

Meet Jade at PCYC Mackay

Indigenous Community Sport and Recreation Officer, Arika Appleby, has been running a community boxing program teaching Indigenous primary and secondary school children fitness, self defence, discipline and respect at PCYC Upper Ross and PCYC Townsville.

What do you love about PCYC Queensland?

I love how our activities bring the community together, especially our gymnastics programs that allow parents to mingle and engage in activities with their children. It’s a great program for children to interact with other children in activities which challenge their self confidence, fine and gross motor skills.

“When they first rolled in they felt quite shamed at the start and then over time they just built this undeniable confidence,” said Arika.

The kids get the opportunity to become both leaders and mentors in a culturally safe space.

“They are that bigger sister or brother, and the younger kids just love it because they feel that as well.”

Fun Fact: I also work closely with seniors and special needs members. I have a passion for helping as many people as I can in the community!

Central Queensland PCYC Gladstone youth volunteer raising awareness for breast cancer A huge shout out to PCYC Gladstone youth volunteer Cooper West who is shaving his long locks to raise awareness and support for breast cancer!

“I’m fundraising to help make the lives of families experiencing breast cancer that little bit easier, by having access to support in their time of need.”

Cooper has experienced first-hand how a close family member’s breast cancer diagnosis can change your life in an instant. He is a valued member of PCYC Gladstone and a great example of a young person displaying leadership, passion and commitment to improve himself and his community.

PCYC Hervey Bay gymnasts compete Congratulations to our gymnastics performance team who competed at the YMCA Winter Carnival recently. Some amazing results from our level 3’s and 4’s who all passed their level. A special mention to Lexi who achieved 1st on vault, 2nd on floor and 1st place overall!

Well done to our fantastic team of coaches and judges, we are all so proud of your hard work and achievements!

PCYC South Burnett run Catch Me If You Can PCYC South Burnett’s first ever Catch Me if You Can police and youth mentoring program was a hit in Murgon with six Murgon Primary State School students graduating from the program with police mentors.

The students completed the four-session program, with local police mentors Sergeant Mark O’Brien, Senior Constable Danielle Gordan, Acting Senior Constable Aaron Hartwell, Constable Graham Lochrie and Constable Trent Ward, involving intense discussions about issues within the community, positives and negatives of school, and discussions about home life.

PCYC Zillmere’s 20th Anniversary Open Day PCYC Zillmere recently celebrated its 20th anniversary with an Open Day celebration!

We had such a great day and hope those that came along did too. Thank you again to all our amazing vendors, staff, volunteers and generous donors.

PCYC Sunshine Coast teen girls boxing camp PCYC Sunshine Coast’s Teen Girls Boxing Reconnect camp at Habitat Noosa was a huge success thanks to Sundale Community Foundation.

The girls had a great time taking part in activities such as Qugong, yoga, canoeing the Noosa Everglades, climbing Mt Coorora and participating in a crystal macrame workshop. Thanks to all the staff and volunteers involved and a big shout out to our lovely canoe instructor Jeanette!

Brisbane / South West Queensland PCYC Inala boxing comp Our PCYC Inala boxers showed excellent enthusiasm and sportsmanship as they competed in the recent Queensland Novice Titles.

Fantastic job by all and what an even more incredible experience as it was for some, their firstever boxing tournament.

We are all very proud of everyone’s efforts and of the PCYC Inala boxing coaches.

PCYC Fortitude Valley member shout out A big shout out to our member Gideon for landing a role touring Australia with Shake & Stir Theatre Co performing an adaptation of George Orwell’s Animal Farm, playing at QPAC in June. Congratulations Gideon, we are so proud of you and can’t wait to see you on stage!

PCYC Inala Blue Edge PCYC Inala’s Blue Edge Program participants completed an exercise routine today that required them to perform a number of physical activities to earn letters that would spell the word “HARMONY”.

The group then had a short discussion regarding Harmony Day and what it means to them and our community. Well done to all members of the group, as usual they all took part and tried their best throughout the session and completed each activity enthusiastically.

Gold Coast / South East Queensland PCYC Carindale Deep Blue Line

PCYC Carindale, PCYC Redlands and PCYC Hills District recently brought 15 young boys together to experience working with the Redlands Water Police, as part of the Deep Blue Line program.

The teenage participants were given insight into the duties and responsibilities of the Water Police and at the same time experienced the joys of cruising the waterways of Moreton Bay. By the end of the session, the boys were confidently conversing with the police officers, and enjoyed the positive interaction. Many thanks to the officers of Redlands Water Police for giving their time and support to our program.

Meet young PCYC Redlands gymnast

Keala has been doing gymnastics at PCYC Redlands since she was one year old, first in unstructured KinderPlay before progressing into structured classes, KinderGym and then KinderStars. Keala's mum did gymnastics as a kid and knew it was a lot of fun and great for physical development. When Keala was diagnosed with hypermobility her paediatric physiotherapist strongly recommended gymnastics because it develops strength throughout the full range of motion.

Gymnastics has been extremely helpful for managing this condition and Keala’s coordination, strength and confidence in her physical abilities have all improved. In addition to physical development, there are so many other positive outcomes from attending gymnastics classes; from following directions, taking it in turns, remembering instructions, or counting repetitions, the classes have helped her develop a range of skills that she’ll use when she starts school and in general life.

Keala’s gymnastics coach says she is absolutely outstanding, her confidence has grown, and she even wants to be a gymnastics teacher when she grows up!

PCYC Mt Gravatt host Wheels and Beats Skateboarding, Scooter and BMX Competition PCYC Mount Gravatt hosted Wheels and Beats in celebration of Youth Week 2021, with over 100 young people attending.

Everyone enjoyed the food and entertainment, with representatives from the Logan District Road Policing Unit, Multicultural Australia and The Salvation Army - Employment Plus also coming along to promote road safety and provide information to young people about the opportunities and services available to them.

Other News ESCape Week 2021 PCYC Queensland Emergency Services Cadets ESCape Week is the most prestigious event on the Cadet calendar – a once in a lifetime opportunity for cadets to be inspired, by experiencing life as an emergency service worker.

Congratulations to the 22 Cadets who were selected to participate in April 2021 ESCape Week – this unique event offers unforgettable training experiences for ambitious young volunteers. Special thanks also go to our staff, adult leaders and mentors who made this week so successful.

ESCape Week involves five days of intense hands-on experiences provided by multi-agencies, and we are incredibly grateful to our partners for providing this year’s amazing experiences including Marine Rescue Bribie Island, Queensland Police Academy, Villeneuve Rural Fire Brigade, Dayboro & District Rural Fire Brigade, Bellthorpe Rural Fire Brigade, Hazeldean Rural Fire Brigade, Wamuran Rural Fire Brigade, Coochiemudllo Surf Life Saving and Queensland combined emergency services academy.

Dalari Fast 5 Netball Tournament The 2021 Dalari Fast5 Netball Tournament held at PCYC Yarrabah for the third year running was again a huge success, with the Yarrabah community welcoming teams from surrounding communities including Cairns, Mareeba, Mossman, Kuranda, Cape AFL Girls House, and Townsville. A total of 57 girls aged 11-14 participated in the event.

The grand final saw Yarrabah and Mareeba battle it out in what was an extremely close and competitive game, with Mareeba becoming the 2021 event winners.

This successful community-delivered event was supported by Yarrabah Deadly Choices, and Yarrabah Aboriginal Shire Council CEO and we extend our thanks to local Elder and traditional owner Aunty Earnestine Yeatman for welcoming everyone to country on behalf of the Gunggandji people.

Profiles I have extensive, high level experience in negotiating successful outcomes across government and nongovernment agencies - aligning culture, finance and resources to deliver safe and secure communities through crime prevention strategies, diversion strategies for at risk youth, and in response to crime and road trauma.

Board Director Paul Taylor Deputy Commissioner Regional Queensland Queensland Police Service (QPS) How long have you been on the PCYC Queensland Board?

I was elected to the QPCYWA Board of Directors in December 2018.

Have you had any previous association with PCYC Queensland?

In 1980 I served as the Club Manager of PCYC Castle Hill in Townsville (no longer operating). It was a great experience to enhance the business relationship between our two organisations and to foster unique interactions between QPS Officers and the young Queenslanders within our community.

Please tell us a little about your previous career experience.

With over 40 years policing experience in Queensland, I have been a Commissioned Officer with the Queensland Police Service since 1997 – relieving in such positions since 1992.

Appointed to numerous commanding roles I have performed duties as Director, National Police Tactical Group Counter Terrorism Training; Commander, G20 Finance Ministers Meeting Cairns; Deputy Commander, G20 Leaders’ Summit Brisbane and Commander, SPOC 2018 Commonwealth Games. I am currently serving as the Deputy Commissioner, Regional Queensland and responsible for the efficient and effective engagement of over 6000 employees in delivering safety and security outcomes to Regional Queensland communities.

I am a member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and was awarded the Australian Police Medal (APM) for demonstrated leadership capabilities within the QPS in 2001.

What attracted you to the PCYC Queensland Board, and how does your background contribute to your position?

The QPCYWA and the QPS have had a long-standing relationship since 1948, which has evolved and become substantially more complex over time. Becoming a Board Director allows me the opportunity to support Youth Development and Crime Prevention activities whilst also addressing the diverse challenges police face in terms of youth engagement within our community today.

What are you excited about for the future of PCYC Queensland?

The QPCYWA plays a vital role in the lives of more than 50,000 young people each year, encouraging them to get involved in a range of sports and activities, and exposing them to the positive influence of great mentors and community leaders - including our serving police officers.

The ability to change the path of a young person, to develop and encourage productive adults, is a prospect I find extremely exciting. Delivering initiatives that give young people purpose, focus, motivation, skills and opportunity is the future I see for PCYC Queensland.

Any other comments you would like to make?

I find it immensely rewarding to travel throughout the State, visiting PCYC Queensland clubs and witnessing such passionate dedication and commitment to our community from Police, Staff & Volunteers. To see the great programs on offer that are helping to shape the Queenslanders of the future is extremely gratifying.

September 2013 What do you enjoy most about working at PCYC Queensland?

Working with young people from a large variety of different back grounds, making a positive difference, helping them to reach goals and offering equal opportunities.

What has been the highlight/s over your length of service?

There have been lots of highlights! Key highlights include building strong successful programs, assisting athletes to reach sporting and life goals, and consistently achieving the largest number of State and National Champions.

What are you most excited about for the future of PCYC Queensland?

The growth of the club and the being the largest provider of gymnastics in Queensland!

Tell us a little about yourself?

I have been in the Gymnastics industry for more than 40 years as an athlete, coach, and program manager. I have previously owned multiple gymnastics centres, I have been a State Team coach and judge, and National Squad Coach. I am passionate about the sport in general and love to see young people achieve their goals!

Profiles What has been the highlight/s over your length of service?

Delivering The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award and the Youth Leadership Team has given me great joy over the years, watching young people grow and develop from the age of 12 with the Bridge Award, through to finishing their Gold Award. You really form a bond with them, and I enjoy seeing their success as they become young adults pursuing further education and careers.

What are you most excited about for the future of PCYC Queensland?

Club Manager Sergeant Linda Baade PCYC Gold Coast Club Manager When did you start working at PCYC Queensland?

I started volunteering at PCYC Mackay in 2001 and became the Club Manager in 2006. In 2008 I transferred to the Gold Coast and started at PCYC Gold Coast in August 2009, and I have been here ever since!

What do you enjoy most about working at PCYC Queensland?

I love helping people. It gives me satisfaction seeing people achieve their goals.

PCYC Gold Coast is currently renovating a number of areas and I’m excited to see the final product. We have new tiles in the reception area ready for a makeover of our BBQ area where our customers can purchase smoothies and coffees. This will be great for our Saturday morning parkrunners and our members wanting protein shakes. We also have a new roof and the skylights have brightened the stadium making the space more inviting.

We are also working towards new equipment and modernisation of the gym, so watch this space there is lots happening!

Tell us a little about yourself?

I’ve discovered you can do anything if you don’t quit. I started running about nine years ago and have finished 21 Ultra Marathons. The toughest was Ultra Trail Australia, 100km through the Blue Mountains finishing with 996 steps up the Furber Steps. My distance is usually 100km however I have finished a 100 miler across the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail (161 km usually but my husband and I got lost and did 168 km!) I’m hoping to finish the Surf Coast Century in Victoria in September. I finished in 17 hours in 2019 and they give you a beer mug if you get in under 16 hours so I’m going back for another shot at it. I sprinted the last kilometre of the Margaret River Ultra 80km to get in under 14 hours for a wine glass. I love the bling you can win! My motto in life is “Make Each Day Count!”

Thanks to Haymes Paint Shop Sunshine Coast for awarding us the grand prize of our Gymnastics Hall being painted during the school holidays in their Helping Hands competition! Gymnastics Coordinator Maree Calder and Club Manager Sergeant Mick Hughes were over the moon to be presented with their big cheque.
