Message from CEO As always, I am incredibly proud of our volunteers and their involvement across the organisation and thank you all for your ongoing loyalty – PCYC Queensland could not operate without your continued contribution and support.

Our volunteer numbers continue to increase as you will see in our infographic on the back page. Now at over 3,300 volunteers and growing, more than 500 volunteers have joined our organisation this year alone, which speaks volumes about PCYC Queensland’s ongoing community engagement reach and strong culture.

There have been many positive things happening across the state this month, including new Emergency Services Cadets (ESC) locations opening and PCYC embRACE launch, not to mention numerous member achievements and awards. I was also proud to sign a Statement of Commitment with the Department of Child Safety, Youth and Women, in our collaborative approach to delivering programs and services to benefit young Queenslanders.

I know there are so many more congratulations, staff to welcome and events happening across the organisation – so please share your stories at media@pcyc.org.au.

PCYC Queensland signs Statement of Commitment PCYC Queensland's CEO Phil Schultz and the Department of Child Safety, Youth and Women's Director-General Michael Hogan recently signed a Statement of Commitment together to provide strong outcomes for Queenslanders. The statement reflects the commitment of PCYC Queensland and the Department to work collaboratively to deliver even greater programs and services, to benefit Queenslanders at risk. Our organisations look forward to growing our partnership with you all to achieve wonderful outcomes for young Queenslanders through youth development programs.

Zone 1 – Far North Queensland PCYC Mount Isa branch manager wins Australian Police Medal PCYC Queensland congratulates six Queensland Police Service (QPS) officers, including previous PCYC Mount Isa branch manager Sergeant Gina Scott, who were all recently awarded an Australian Police Medal (APM) in recognition of their distinguished service.

Sergeant Gina Scott has been a member of the QPS for over 25 years and until December 2018, was branch manager at PCYC Mount Isa for nine years. Sergeant Scott is a dedicated police officer who gives selflessly to the community, and she has continuously fostered positive relationships between police and the community.

Her achievements include obtaining funding to complete significant club upgrades, developing and delivering programs to improve the lives of Indigenous children and women, and empowering youth through Youth Management teams. Congratulations Gina and all the APM recipients!

PCYC Cloncurry to host the inaugural ‘Fit for Duty’ Challenge PCYC Cloncurry has been given the opportunity to host the inaugural ‘Fit for Duty’ Challenge between Cloncurry’s local police and firefighters. Week one saw the police win the bench press challenge, and firefighters taking out the dead lift challenge. The beep test saw both teams tie with the exact same average speed of 9.27 seconds! Week two consisted of a 4km road run and wall sit and plank contest – with the firefighters victorious in planking, and police wining the road run and wall sit. Both teams are competing well, and we are excited to see the results of the upcoming 100m sprint, suspension challenge and push up contest!

PCYC Mareeba hosts Mareeba Rotary Club PCYC Mareeba recently hosted a visit from some members of the Mareeba Rotary Club, including past President Matt Jacob, incoming president and Mareeba Shire Councilor Lenore Wyatt, and Chantelle Pedersen for a club ‘show and tell’. The attendees all enjoyed a tour of the building and the proposed new gym, and discovered the amazing programs, activities and support networks PCYC Mareeba provides for young people and the wider community.

Zone 2 – North Queensland PCYC Queensland North Queensland Flood Appeal and Townsville support In the wake of Townsville’s terrible floods, the PCYC Queensland North Queensland Flood Appeal has been established to support our clubs and members affected by this terrible natural disaster. During the appeal, every dollar raised during March and April will go directly to support our clubs and members affected.

PCYC Charters Towers update PCYC Charters Towers Circle of Respect recently welcomed Sergeant Paul Ansell to join the circle, to welcome new participants and share a little about his role at the club and what it is like being a police officer. After his chat, Sergeant Ansell showed the team some of his favourite games, of which Bash Ball was a favourite.

PCYC Queensland is also amongst several key partners involved in the Townsville Youth Recovery Task Force, established to meet recovery needs of young people through activities and programs and delivered with the help of our Indigenous Programs team. Thanks also to Tradelink and Laminex for their Flood Recovery Family Fun Day in Garbutt on Saturday, 23 March.

Congratulations to two PCYC Charters Towers Ignite members, who received Australia Day awards.

Makayla Foster won Young Citizen of the Year and Kassity Knox won Young Cultural Person of the Year! It is wonderful to see our young members being recognised by the community for their efforts and achievements.

PCYC Innisfail Youth Engagement Symposium a success Thank you to everyone who attended and made the first YES (Youth Engagement Symposium) a great success at PCYC Innisfail. More than 62 community members came along, with the guest of honours being 25 students from seven local schools. Supported by the Queens Hotel Innisfail, many great ideas were shared between local businesses, community members, local councillors and the Mayor. PCYC Queensland would like to share this celebration with you all today as you may not have seen this wonderful achievement.

Zone 3 – Central Queensland PCYC Emerald branch manager aged care ‘Adopt‑a‑Cop’ Residents of the Avalon Aged Care Facility in Emerald have recently ‘adopted’ PCYC Emerald branch manager Sergeant Julia Henderson, thanks to the popular Adopt-a-Cop program. Aimed at building relationships in the Queensland Police Services (QPS) community, Adopt-a-Cop benefits include enhanced feelings of safety and well-being, increased community satisfaction and education.

Sergeant Henderson will be a key resource for residents seeking information and advice especially for residents having difficulty getting out into the community. Sergeant Henderson is passionate about caring for seniors in the community, saying “I am honoured to have been adopted by Avalon and look forward to getting to know the staff and residents.”

PCYC Sunshine Coast gymnastics awarded for growth and performance Congratulations to PCYC Sunshine Coast, who at the Gymnastics Queensland’s Annual Awards Dinner last month was awarded a Membership Growth Award and Performance Club of the Year Award. Awarded for their growth and expansion, the gymnastics team now includes five coaches and more than 350 members. Thank you to all our gymnasts, parents and coaches for the fantastic effort you put into our club to make it Performance Club of the Year!

Zone 4 – South West Queensland PCYC Beenleigh making dreams come true PCYC Beenleigh’s Ready for Work Program commenced at the end of February and is helping young member Jaide to achieve her career goal of working in the movie makeup industry. To support Jaide’s participation in the program, and pursue a diploma to achieve her goal, staff at PCYC Beenleigh have helped Jaide start up her own face painting business, and she recently secured her first face painting job. Well done!

PCYC Dalby gymnasts make the WAG Team Future Squad Congratulations to PCYC Dalby gymnasts Lexie Kimpton and Philipa-Rose Simpkins, who have made the Women’s Artistic Gymnastics (WAG) Team Future Squad!

This squad is made up of only 30 girls from Levels 4 to 6 across the whole state, so it is a big achievement for PCYC Dalby to score two of those spots. Well done to all!

Zone 4 – South West Queensland continued...

PCYC Carindale hosts Ship for World Youth Program On February 15, PCYC Carindale had the pleasure of hosting 30 young people from Ship for World Youth Program (SWY), operated by Cabinet Office, Government of Japan. SWY is a program that involves youths from Japan and countries around the world. The participants study and discuss common issues from a global perspective and participate in various activities that involve multi-cultural and multinational exchange opportunities to cultivate international awareness and leadership. The delegates from 11 different countries attended a two-hour session learning about PCYC Queensland and the impact our programs have on our communities. PCYC Queensland Chair, Garry Humphries, was honoured to meet the delegates at a formal reception.

Zone 5 – South East Queensland PCYC Bornhoffen training PCYC Bornhoffen Leadership Development Team recently delivered a day service at the University of Queensland. A 23-person delivery team ran a group process for 900 first year engineering students as part of their orientation week. The session is aimed at building connections and friendships that will assist in supporting a positive learning experience. Thanks to everyone who made this a success!

Former PCYC Redlands member makes it big in US basketball Former PCYC Redlands basketballer Tina Mangakahi is now one of the best basketball players in United States college basketball and is chasing her dreams of playing in the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) and representing her country with the Australian Opals.

Tina started playing basketball at PCYC Redlands when she was just five years old, never knowing it would turn into her career. “I would always play with any team that needed an extra player and loved playing with or against my five brothers. When I got a bit older and started to realise my potential, I started saying I want to play in the WNBA,” she said.

Now aged 23 and playing with renowned Syracuse University, Tina is arguably one of best point guard’s in US women’s college basketball!

Other News PCYC Emergency Services Cadets expands to three new locations Our PCYC Emergency Services Cadets (ESC) program has expanded operations to three new locations, welcoming Charters Towers, Hinchinbrook and South Burnett into the team.

PCYC Gymnastics PCYC Redlands gymnasts showcase their new uniform. As our gymnastics footprint expands to 32 clubs across the state through our new statewide syllabus. We welcome hundreds of new gymnastics members.

We look forward to seeing our 94 new cadets develop skills, leadership and volunteering and making the most of the mentoring opportunities available to them. Thanks to all of the volunteer Adult Leaders and Emergency Services Personnel who have put in so much hard work to get these units operating.

Brisbane Roar tickets Thanks to Brisbane Roar Football Club and their new platinum partner BBC Painting for recently donating 40 tickets to PCYC Queensland clubs Inala, Sandgate, Pine Rivers and Redcliffe, for members to attend the Brisbane Roar FC v Western Sydney Wanderers match at Suncorp Stadium!

PCYC embRACE launches!

PCYC Queensland CEO Phil Schultz officially launched PCYC embRACE recently with Logan City Council Acting Mayor Cherie Dalley, Network 10 Sports Reporter and Youth Ambassador Jono Williams, Inspector Michael Volk and students from Kingston State School. Thanks to our major event partners Logan City Council and Network 10, and new sponsor Downer Group for their support.

This year, free entry will be made to 200 young people PCYC Queensland supports across all South East Queensland. This offer is made via your local club manager and is open to Youth Management Teams, Cadets, Indigenous Programs and young people who would be otherwise unable to attend the event - as well as a youth workers or coordinators who will be responsible for the team of young people.

Register now as an individual/team with your staff and volunteers and fundraise for your club! Encourage your members, community groups and other local businesses to register for the event as well or support your fundraising. Great prizes are up for grabs.

PCYC Bundaberg Outside School Hours Care (OSHC) PCYC Bundaberg OSHC help keep their service sustainable by feeding Mr Piggy daily. Sergeant John Kendall has many animals on his farm at home, and the children love to collect all the food scraps Mr Piggy can eat and give them to Sergeant Kendall. The children look forward to seeing pictures of Mr Piggy indulging in all of the fruit and vegetables the children do not eat! The children are invested in ensuring that all the scraps do not go to waste. It is great to see the children get involved in feeding Mr Piggy and all of the other animals at the farm.

A very deserving PCYC Lottery winner!

PCYC Queensland recently caught up with Ken, the lucky first prize winner of PCYC Lottery 68, who won a brand new Mitsubishi Pajero Sport! Ken first donated to PCYC Lottery due to his affiliation with Scouts where he worked as a leader and was inspired by the work of PCYC Queensland and the positive impact our organisation has on young Queenslanders. Ken has supported our PCYC Lottery for over six years, with his contributions having a significant impact throughout Queensland communities, especially in his local area of Wynnum. As a communitybased bus driver for 37 years, Ken is a very active member in his community, with a passion for youth development and fundraising. After supporting community fundraising initiatives for over 30 years, this is the first prize Ken has ever won and he was incredibly grateful. Congratulations and thank you Ken for supporting PCYC Queendland.

When did you start at PCYC Queenslwand?

I started with PCYC Queensland over 12 years ago in 2007. The roles I have had include Branch Support Officer, Branch Administration Officer and now Branch Operations Manager.

What do you like most about working at PCYC Queensland?

The opportunity to work with highly skilled, passionate and motivated staff. Over the years, I have also developed lifelong friendships with both co-workers and club members which are incredibly important to me.

Sergeant Bernadette Strow Branch Manager PCYC Mount Isa New Branch Manager at PCYC Mount Isa Sergeant Bernadette Strow has several goals for the future of the club.

“My main goal is to build good relationships within the community and with various agencies, to ensure we all work together to achieve the best community engagement and support we can offer,” said Sergeant Strow.

“I would also like to establish a PCYC Queensland Youth group where the youth have the ability and responsibility to coordinate activities, where they can engage and be mentored by good role models.”

What has been the highlight over your years of service?

“Another goal would be to ensure the PCYC Mount Isa club continues to offer the community a safe and inviting facility for all members to use,” she said.

One of the main highlights for me has been to witness the positive impact that our programs and services have made to the lives of our members, and to the local community.

“Returning to Mount Isa was definitely a family decision, my husband is also a police officer who had previously served in Mount Isa in 1993.

What are you most excited about for the future of PCYC Queensland?

I am really excited about seeing the continued growth of PCYC clubs, and the success of our programs and improvement of communities.

Five Year Flashback

Sergeant Strow credits Mount Isa for her passion in community policing.

“My passion is to establish rapport with our youth as they are the future.

“By working closely with community organisations and gauging what is required to address current issues within the community allows me to be involved in numerous educational and crime prevention initiatives with PCYC Queensland,” she said.

In 2014, popular Aussie rock band Ball Park Music filmed their iconic song ‘Trippin’ The Light Fantastic’ at PCYC Hills District!

Jesse McLennan Local Cadet Coordinator PCYC Emergency Services Cadet Why did you join PCYC Queensland?

PCYC Queensland is an amazing organisation that does so much in the wider communities. I wanted to bring that support and access to the area I lived and worked in by starting up the PCYC Queensland Tara Emergency Services Cadets (ESC) for our youth. My goal is to help people create their own tool-set to build resilience, critical thinking and coping strategies in order to help themselves throughout life.

What do you enjoy about volunteering with PCYC Queensland?

I really enjoy the opportunities and challenges.

You can get as much out of it as you put in.

What opportunities have you gained from being connected to PCYC Queensland?

I’ve gained great opportunities through PCYC Emergency Services Cadets program such as attending the State Youth Leadership Program (SYLP) as staff, upskilling workshops, facilitation workshops at PCYC Bornhoffen, taking cadets to the Australian Fire Cadet Championships in Newcastle and lots more.

What advice would you give a young person thinking of engaging with their local PCYC Queensland club?

Do it! You won’t be disappointed when you put effort in. You will have access to amazing and inspiring people, don’t be afraid to learn from them. PCYC Queensland can offer you many opportunities, it will be up to you to choose which will be the best for you.

What is your favourite PCYC Queensland moment?

I really can’t pick a favourite PCYC moment. Watching the youth of PCYC Queensland grow into amazing, confident and resilient leaders and role models makes every minute spent in the role such a wonderful experience with enriching rewards.

What does the future hold for you?

Thanks in part to the support and personal growth I’ve experienced within PCYC Queensland I’m currently studying my Bachelor of Psychology with Honours. I’m wanting to expand my knowledge and use my new skills to help the community.
