Message from CEO Welcome back to a new year, I look forward to working with you all in 2019. The year will really see us operationalise and embed our strategy and core activities to ensure best practice and continuous improvement for the sustainability of our organisation. I am excited to continue delivering initiatives that give young people focus and motivation to make positive choices and impact the local communities that we serve.

As you will have seen, PCYC Queensland is proud to expand our gymnastics footprint with the recent launch of our new state-wide syllabus across 32 clubs. The web blog story received 1,500 visits in the first 14 days, and we look forward to sharing many of your gymnastics stories across the organisation.

In other great news, we are very proud of PCYC Braking the Cycle winning a Prince Michael International Road Safety Award. Our Board Chair Garry Humphries and I were privileged to attend the award ceremony recently in London and discuss the impact of this initiative, and all our important programs with international delegates.

Finally, I am thrilled to confirm PCYC embRACE our signature family-friendly fun run will be held on Sunday, 9 June, again around the beautiful Logan River Parklands, starting and finishing at PCYC Beenleigh with a fun community festival. More information will follow shortly.

PCYC embRACE is back for 2019!

PCYC embRACE is back in 2019, to be held on Sunday, 9 June. Last year our signature event was a great example of the community embracing the spirit of fun and fitness, with hundreds of people travelling across South East Queensland to participate.

Lets make this year’s event bigger and better!

Last year’s winner was PCYC Hills District member Connor Munroe. A valued member of the club’s Youth Management Team (YMT), Connor loves playing basketball and engaging in activities at the club. Having originally joined the PCYC club based on a friend’s recommendation, he quickly became an active member and discovered his passion for helping others.

“PCYC Queensland has given me the opportunity to make new friends, help others and have fun. I am excited to take on new adventures and challenges in the future” said Connor.

“Participating in the 2018 embRACE was a big challenge for me, and I look forward to returning in 2019!” he said.

PCYC Queensland gymnastics state‑wide syllabus launches!

Our new PCYC Queensland gymnastics state-wide syllabus has launched including KinderGym, Recreational Gymnastics, Performance Gymnastics and Gym Sports. The seamless pathways program allows individuals to experience gymnastics at any age and any level. Our program is tailored to the differing needs of individuals, whether they are serious competitors or just wanting to have some fun. Our gymnastics pathways program is a great reminder that at PCYC Queensland you can start your gymnastics journey no matter what your age! Encourage your local community members to enrol now or enquire via the website gymnastics.pcyc.org.au.

To assist with promotion, an editable suite of collateral and marketing action plan guideline and template are available on the PCYC Intranet. Pull up banners, external signage and promotional materials (t-shirts and bags) are being organised for distribution by Brandon Brown, Sports & Recreation Manager. Please ensure all enquiries are followed up promptly as it is critical to provide a good customer experience of these potential new members.

PCYC Braking the Cycle wins a prestigious International Road Safety Award PCYC Queensland is excited to be a winner of the prestigious Prince Michael International Road Safety Award (PMIRSA) for PCYC Braking the Cycle. Awarded for outstanding contribution to improving road safety, PCYC Braking the Cycle was acknowledged for improving the safety record of disadvantaged young people and for addressing the important area of social inclusion.

For over 30 years, the Prince Michael Award has publicly recognised those organisations who have improved road safety throughout Britain and worldwide, and this year our CEO Phil Schultz and Board Chair Garry Humphries were honoured to attend the award ceremony to meet His Royal Highness Prince Michael of Kent at the gala presentation held on 11 December 2018 at The Savoy Hotel in London.

Zone 1 – Far North Queensland PCYC Mount Isa jumps into 2019 with ‘Chilling in the Park’ PCYC Mount Isa has jumped into 2019, hosting ‘Chilling in the Park’ on 17 January, a wonderful weekly event where young people in the Mount Isa community can play games and enjoy some afternoon tea, engage with others and be educated on everyday issues.

This month’s event brought together Police Liaison Officers, Headspace workers and PCYC Queensland staff for an afternoon of milkshakes, sausage sizzles, artwork, parachute games and a whole lot of fun!

Attendees were also lucky to have a visit from community member Louis, and his heart surgeon puppet. Congratulations to PCYC Mount Isa for a great start to 2019!

PCYC Cooktown hosts laser tag battle PCYC Cooktown and the Cooktown District Community Centre hosted a Star Wars laser tag ‘galactic battle among good and evil’ event at the Events Centre on Monday, 14 January.

Thanks so much to our friends at Cooktown District Community Centre for coming up to run Star Wars laser tag. It was great to see so many young people attend and we look forward to the next event!

Our appreciation also goes to the Endeavour Lions Club of Cooktown for their ongoing support to young people in the local community.

Zone 2 – North Queensland PCYC Townsville celebrates gymnastics coach Fiona Young PCYC Townsville puts the spotlight on one of our fantastic gymnastics coaches, Fiona Young. As a member of the PCYC Townsville coaching team with a long history in gymnastics, Fiona began her coaching career as an assistant while she continued to train and compete. She competed as a gymnast from ages 10-18 and completed her coaching accreditation in 2004. While no longer competing, Fiona praises how gymnastics improved her ability to retain motor patterns, balance work and training - and is excited to work with the Townsville community and create a variety of gymnastics opportunities and continue to develop her coaching passion.

PCYC Mackay celebrates Australia Day Award winner Congratulations to PCYC Mackay karate instructor Trent Dyson, who was awarded an Australia Day Mackay Senior Sports Award. Trent has been volunteering and teaching karate at the club for 20 years, sharing his knowledge and inspiring the next generation of children learning karate. With a third‑degree black belt in karate, Trent has trained in various styles of martial arts for more than 23 years.

He has won medals and competed in numerous competitions across karate, mixed marital arts (MMA), Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) and judo.

Zone 3 – Central Queensland PCYC Emerald arrange a spirited game of laser tag In October 2018, PCYC Emerald and the Dysart Bluelight Association held their first ever laser tag event at the Dysart Recreation Centre. The event exceeded all expectations, and police were so impressed when 130 kids attended the event.

The Dysart team were incredibly thankful to PCYC Emerald branch manager Sergeant Julia Henderson, for bringing laser tag to Dysart and for making the day a success. They thanked Sergeant Henderson personally saying “You made this easy for me and my team since our first correspondence. The preparation, organisation and pack up was conducted by your team and was of such a professional standard, thank you for making this happen.”

Zone 3 – Central Queensland continued...

PCYC Rockhampton’s champion boxers Well done to boxers from PCYC Rockhampton who recently competed at the Australian Amateur Boxing League National Titles held in Hobart in December 2018. Five PCYC Rockhampton boxers represented Queensland including Drayden Marou, Lachlan Hinchliffe, Michael Lynch, Sidney Booth and Blake Hughes, who were supported at the titles by coach Des Upton and assistant coaches Nat Marou and Rick Hughes.

Congratulations to Lachlan, Michael and Blake who all won gold medals, and Drayden who won a gold medal on a walkover. Sidney won gold in his weight division on a walkover and then stepped up two weight divisions and won silver. The boys were able to attend the National Titles after the boxing club tirelessly fundraised, and received sponsorship from Darumbal Community Youth Services Inc. and Gidarjil Cultural Heritage Corporation Ltd.

PCYC Hervey Bay boxer wins a gold medal!

PCYC Hervey Bay’s Zac Lovekin has achieved an amazing accomplishment by winning a gold medal at his first international boxing tournament at the fifth Hong Kong City International Tournament in early January. Prior to competing, Zac took a six-month break from training and returned to PCYC Hervey Bay for an intense pre-competition training regime under coach Rodd Hanns. Congratulations Zac and the PCYC Hervey Bay boxing team!

Zone 4 – South West Queensland PCYC South Burnett launches Restart PCYC South Burnett has launched the Restart program in preparation for the 2019 school year.

Cherbourg State School, Murgon State School and Murgon State High School have invested $152,000 over the next 12 months for the program, that focuses on students who are at risk of suspension, disadvantaged or disengaged to get back into the cycle of education, rather than becoming disconnected.

Murgon Chamber of Commerce Chair, Leo Geraghty, said this program was a chance for the community to make a stand for change and address the town’s youth crime and school attendance situation. “We want to be known as the town that did something about this,” he said.

PCYC Dalby congratulates latest PCYC Braking the Cycle learner PCYC Dalby congratulates Daniel, a very special PCYC Braking the Cycle participant. In August 2018, Daniel, aged 55, entered PCYC Dalby to join the program having failed his provisional license five times, and looking for extra support. After 23 hours and 793kms of driving lessons with his Braking the Cycle mentors (who he shared his incredible personal story with), Daniel achieved his provisional license in late 2018. He was overwhelmed with his achievement and was excited that he had a way to visit his family and travel to work.

Congratulations Daniel, what a wonderful achievement!

PCYC Logan congratulates youth office on award win Well done to PCYC Logan’s Youth Development Officer Codie Smith, who won a Logan City Council ‘Safe City Award’ in the government and business category. Codie was chosen for the award as a congratulations for all her hard work and dedication in running the community programs, many of which have a profound impact on the surrounding area and has helped to keep the city of Logan safe. Congratulations Codie and the whole Youth Management Team on your achievements!

Zone 5 – South East Queensland Women’s basketball leading the way at PCYC Redlands PCYC Redlands congratulates basketball players Penny Lynch and Laura McKillop who have both recently been selected in the Queensland Under 18 State Basketball Squad. Both Penny and Laura currently play for Redlands Pride and have progressed through the junior ranks at PCYC Redlands. Laura said that making the Queensland State Squad was very exciting and had introduced them both to a higher level of basketball. PCYC Redlands is excited to see what the future holds for both girls!

PCYC Sandgate clubs celebrate Gymnastics Queensland Award Many PCYC Queensland clubs were excited to be amongst winners and finalists at the recent Gymnastics Queensland Annual Awards Dinner (see awards list story further on).

Among them, PCYC Sandgate were honoured to be among the finalists for the Club Promotion & Community Engagement Award. The entire gymnastics team worked tirelessly throughout 2018 to ensure the gymnastics program continued to grow and thrive, focusing on the enjoyment and development of young gymnasts.

The recognition by Gymnastics Queensland is very much appreciated!

Other News Indigenous Programs Townsville graffiti tour As part of the PCYC Queensland Indigenous Community Sport and Recreation Program, on 8 January, 24 young people were given the opportunity to participate in the Townsville graffiti tour.

The young people were given maps of where to find buildings, pictures and descriptions of the pieces, and everyone took turns navigating the group through the city and finding the landmarks, stopping for a quick lunch.

Wynnum Outside School Hours Care embrace new educators Wynnum Outside School Hours Care has embraced the strengths of new educators by focusing on recycling.

Throughout term 4 last year the children started collecting a number of second-hand clothing items and assorted bric a brac. During summer vacation care the program ran numerous up-cycling activities which included the most popular activity: transforming old t-shirts into bags.

This proved so popular, it was extended over several more days! During the activities the children were taught about being environmentally friendly, and engaged in some great examples including transforming discounted books into fluffy pillow books!

PCYC Ashmore celebrates 60th anniversary of the Duke of Edinburgh International Award PCYC Ashmore celebrates the 60th anniversary of delivering the Duke of Edinburgh International Award. Lauren Robsons’ story (below) gives a great example of the positive outcomes the program achieves.

Lauren’s story: “I heard of the Duke of Edinburgh (DoE) International Award through a friend at school and started my journey with PCYC Ashmore in 2017. I haven’t looked back and Wednesday afternoons at PCYC Ashmore have become my favourite part of the week!

I first joined to grow my confidence and develop my leadership skills and now, I am so proud to have achieved my Bronze Award and am close to achieving my Silver Award. Through the DoE program, I have learned the clarinet, completed camp craft, volunteered for PCYC State Youth Leadership Program (SYLP), completed two urban journeys across Brisbane and Gold Coast, a five-day Gold Coast Hinterland bushwalk and a week long 65km Overland Track in Tasmania. I am so proud of myself and what I have achieved and want to inspire others to do the DoE. Although it may seem daunting at first, it has been an amazing experience, where I have met many wonderful people and experienced unforgettable things.”

PCYC Emergency Services Cadets expanding to Charters Towers Commencing in February, young people in Charters Towers will soon be able to train with the Charters Towers Emergency Services Cadets. Cadets aged 12-17 years will gain exposure and learn valuable skills, and can train with ambulance, fire and rescue, police and other services.

Cadets learn a diverse range of emergency services skills, develop their leadership potential and are encouraged to seek a career or ongoing volunteering role. Not only do they get to use all the real equipment and accompany personnel on training exercises, there is even the chance to gain a Certificate II in Public Safety. For those interested, come along to the Charters Towers Emergency Services Cadets information and sign-on night from 5pm–7pm on 12 February at PCYC Charters Towers.

Congratulations to our PCYC Logan Gymnasts!

Congratulations to our talented junior gymnasts who won third place at the 2018 Sanix Cup International Junior Rhythmic Gymnastics Tournament, held in November 2018 in Fukuoka, Japan. Our PCYC Logan Gymnastics Junior Group, consisting of Reina, Mikayla, Grace, Adelaide and Isabella, placed third against 28 groups.

Staff Member Profile Dane Cross We caught up with Grant Unit Manager, Dane Cross, on 15 years with PCYC Queensland!

What do you like most about working at PCYC Queensland?

The thing I like most about working at PCYC Queensland is knowing that what I’m doing is making a difference to the lives of thousands of young people across Queensland. Albeit indirectly, the $12million+ per year in grant funding that my team and I work tirelessly to secure, goes directly into enhancing our facilities and programs which in turn directly benefits our members and young people.

What has been the highlight over your years of service?

When did you start at PCYC Queensland?

I got my first start in PCYC Queensland way back in 1995 as a school age care supervisor at PCYC Logan City vacation care. After sustaining a spinal cord injury in 2001, I made my return to work via a volunteer opportunity with PCYC Bornhoffen doing a market analysis in 2004. That was 15 years ago! My grant writing prowess was soon discovered and put to work at PCYC Beenleigh that same year, where I worked until 2006 before getting my start with the Youth Team at State Office. My role as Grants Unit Manager commenced in 2008, where I have been happily toiling away ever since.

While there have been a few standout grants including PCYC Rockhampton’s Youth Connections Program ($767,000 per year for three years), I have to put meeting my wife and now mother of my two children at the top of the list! Stacey and I met as colleagues at PCYC State Office back in 2010 and the rest, so they say, is history. Other than that, I have enjoyed the many Branch Managers Conferences and Gala Dinners. One true highlight though was being part of the facilitator training for the State Youth Leadership Program (SYLP) and, while I’m yet to facilitate a SYLP program, it gave me a great insight into one of PCYC Queensland’s flagship programs. It’s no wonder that SYLP has been credited for empowering hundreds of young people over the years!

What are you most excited about for the future of PCYC Queensland?

My own personal bias has me excited about seeing PCYC Queensland becoming a more inclusive service provider. With a Queensland Government Disability Action Plan soon to be developed, I’m excited by the prospect of seeing more people with disability participating in our activities, daily.

Volunteer Member Profile Kassity Knox

Containers for Change Member of PCYC Charters Towers, Kassity Knox has won an Australia Day Award for young cultural person of the year! Kassity was nominated for her leadership efforts to be a role model in the community, and last year was selected to take part in PCYC Queensland’s State Youth Leadership Program (SYLP) in recognition of her leadership abilities.

Having recently graduated from The Blackheath and Thornburgh College, Kassity remains involved in school activities, helping out at local events and teaching the children to sing and dance to their class songs. Kassity took part in the PCYC Breakfast of Champions event, engaging with police, local indigenous elders, business owners, school principals and politicians to find out more about our community and how to engage youth. She volunteers with the PCYC Indigenous Programs Circle of Respect program and enjoys giving back to her community. Congratulations Kassity!
