Message from CEO It is difficult to believe five months have passed since our clubs, programs and activities essentially came to a standstill back in March. After such a challenging period of enforced closure, it is wonderful to finally have so many of our programs and activities welcoming members back into clubs again.

In positive news, I am pleased to announce that Dr Cassandra Cross was unanimously elected to the position of Board Chair last night. Dr Cross who is currently Deputy Chair, will take over from Chairman Garry Humphries following our AGM in November.

In other news, it is great to hear the new customer service and sales training currently being rolled out to support the new Member Services Teams structure being implemented in clubs is being well received and eagerly adopted.

As we can now begin to look ahead for events and activities, we look forward to hosting the Wariganda Indigenous Golf Tournament in Townsville on 14 September, and the PCYC Queensland Corporate Golf Day on 23 October.

Customer service and sales training Our customer service and sales training being implemented across clubs is going incredibly well, with great engagement and feedback by all involved.

Delivered by Zone Development Managers, the training incorporates both principles and procedures of customer service and sales.

Initial training sessions involving Club Managers as well as our newly created positions of Member Service Team Leaders (MSTL) and Member Service Officers (MSO) consist of self-awareness activities, customer service break-out sessions and sales scripting for gym and gymnastics memberships, with sessions focusing on how we can improve the member experience from start to finish and sharpening sales skills. Thanks to all for the engagement and positive feedback provided!

Dr Cassandra Cross elected as new PCYC Queensland Board Chair Congratulations to Dr Cassandra Cross, who has been unanimously elected as PCYC Queensland’s new Board Chair. The election was held in advance of the AGM to ensure a seamless transition of leadership, and Dr Cross will take over the position following the AGM in November.

As the first female Board Chair in PCYC Queensland’s history, Dr Cross welcomes the appointment of her new position. Dr Cross takes over from current Board Chair Garry Humphries, who will step down in his role at the end of the year in accordance with our Constitution, following a successful nine year tenure.

Far North Queensland PCYC Innisfail benefits from customer service training As the first club to undergo the new customer service training, PCYC Innisfail club manager Sergeant Mick Maguire said the training was one of the best sessions his staff had attended.

“Since the training, PCYC Innisfail has been able turn five enquiries into sales.

However, the real impact has come at the front counter with 35 new members signing up for Gym and Fitness and two Innisfail members referred to our gyms at PCYC Townsville and PCYC Mount Isa!” said Sergeant Maguire.

“The Member Services Officers (MSOs) are growing in confidence and delivering fantastic customer service. This was highlighted recently when one of our Life Members and avid gym users dropped by the office to congratulate staff, saying she received feedback from a gymnastic parent in the community who said their experience from start to finish with PCYC Innisfail was brilliant and made the whole process of signing up their child for gymnastics seamless.”

PCYC Townsville Elders group Well done to the Townsville Elders group who have been very busy as of late with their Indigenous Community Sport and Recreation Officer (ICSRO), visiting Herveys Range Tea House for a walk and morning tea and playing games of Huoy. The group come together every second Friday for Hoy and Mondays for walks to start the week off right!

Get Set for Work participants revitalise the veggie patch at PCYC Capricorn Coast

PCYC Caboolture achieves first Braking the Cycle licence post COVID

PCYC Capricorn Coast’s Get Set for Work participants made the most of the cooler weather recently by revitalising the old veggie patch at the club in Yeppoon.

Congratulations to Angel who passed her provisional licence test with flying colours on her first attempt! It was also the first licence achieved since the program has recommenced. Well done Angel and a big call out to mentor driver Jerard.

Weeding, tilling and planting have resulted in some great produce being harvested including beetroot, carrots, zucchini, tomatoes and this whopping lettuce!

Gold Coast / South East Queensland PCYC Ashmore celebrate gym member Cliff’s 92nd birthday The PCYC Ashmore team recently celebrated their most senior member Cliff Andrews’ 92nd birthday! Cliff has been a member of the club’s Mature and Determined Seniors (MADS), fitness group for nearly two years and the group celebrated with birthday morning tea and cake…only after completing their 45-minute fitness class of course!

Cliff is known for his persistence and ‘can do’ attitude and is a great inspiration to the group members and local community.

Brisbane / South West Queensland PCYC Lang Park flash back!

As PCYC Queensland’s first club established in 1948 at the corner of Caxton and Hale Streets, enrolment at PCYC Lang Park was open to boys and girls aged from 12-17 years and totalled 790 members as of June 1950.

Activities included boxing, wrestling, basketball, gymnastics, folk dancing, millinery and needlework. This wonderful photo below is of the Lang Park Judo Club in 1955!

Other News PCYC Gold Coast’s Duke of Edinburgh’s team Silver Award Adventurous Journey Congratulations to PCYC Gold Coast members Miku, Anna, Ryan, Felicity, Tvisha, Ethan and Tahlia who recently completed their Silver Award Adventurous Journey from 27-29 June along the Sunshine Coast Hinterland Great Walk.

PCYC Mount Isa OSHC Officer Aimee Sewell from PCYC Mount Isa, also known as ‘Mt Isa’s Rodeo Queen’ attended the PCYC Mount Isa OSHC’s Rodeo Pupil Free Day. The children had a great time learning The Git Up dance, and Aimee enjoyed judging the children’s Rodeo dress up competition. Congratulations to Will and Olivia on your amazing outfits!

The team coped well with the cold nights and drizzling rain that occurred for most of the second day, as well as the hiking, with the group saying the hiking was a highlight of the trip. Thanks to all involved, and to Ray for volunteering as a supervisor.

Indigenous Community Sport and Recreation Program contract extension PCYC Queensland is excited to confirm our continued delivery of the government’s Indigenous Community Sport and Recreation Program (ICSRP) in 35 indigenous communities till June 2021. As we enter the third year of the contract extension, the contributions of our ICSRP network as we have navigated COVID-19 have been inspiring, with many wonderful examples of our staff bringing a new approach to community engagement and program delivery to support indigenous people in local communities across the state.

Team Connect Profiles Staff Andy Cassidy General Manager Indigenous Programs Beginning her journey with PCYC Queensland in March 2000, this year marks Andy’s 20th anniversary! Leading from the front, seeing passion and commitment from her team and making the impossible possible across the remote communities of Queensland are the driving forces that have shaped her 20-year career.

How have you progressed through PCYC Queensland?

I have embraced my progression within PCYC Queensland, starting as a Youth Development Worker in Central Queensland, then transferring to the same position in North Queensland to raise my then-young family. I was then afforded the opportunity to help establish PCYC Palm Island, which led to me lobbying for a standalone Indigenous role within PCYC Queensland that would bring a dedicated platform to the Indigenous PCYC Queensland clubs in Mornington Island, Palm Island and Yarrabah at that time.

I seized the opportunity to embrace the North Queensland Zone Development Manager role for 2.5 years prior to establishing my current General Manager Indigenous Programs portfolio in 2013, which required me to move my family and life from Townsville to Brisbane. I liken this move to the country mouse learning how to become a city mouse!

What are some of your highlights over the past 20 years?

There are so many highlights to mention! Mostly, the amazing people I’ve had the pleasure of working alongside and whom I have come to regard as my PCYC family, and the communities I have connected with and advocated for to affect positive change.

My PCYC Queensland experience has been a genuine adventure that has taken me to places where most people wouldn’t have the opportunity to venture.

Bringing some joy into the lives of young people and their families in some very challenging locations has been incredibly rewarding.

My “ah-ha” moment is seeing the smile that erupts on a young person’s face and hearing the giggles of delight as you see the fruits of your team’s efforts resulting in the provision of a program or resource, or an event you’ve made possible – in communities where many other services are not available.

What achievements are you proud of?

I have always proudly shared that PCYC Queensland makes the ‘impossible possible’ for many communities where others would not venture, due to their challenging nature of these remote locations.

PCYC Queensland brings a platform of possibilities to communities where they are usually limited, and I feel very blessed to belong to a company that has supported my passion and career pathway coming together and allowing me to work across many metro, regional and remote communities to bring them a unique participation experience.

During the many unspoken long hours often spent in transit on my own and with my team to get to the locations we work in, and facing challenging conditions at every turn – when the outcome is the delivery of an activity, program or event for young people and their families, bringing them something that our mainstream communities can access daily with ease as part of the norm – that is what I’m proud of.

What are you most excited about for the future of PCYC Queensland?

Being part of PCYC Queensland’s evolution in its commitment to work with and being responsive to the Queensland communities it works alongside has been wonderfully gratifying.

I feel excited for our organisation’s ability to continue working with regional and remote locations to grow these communities to deliver a PCYC Queensland platform that will reduce the gap in accessible social, emotional well-being programs and services for young people and their families often experienced due to isolation of their community.

What opportunities have you gained from being connected to PCYC Queensland?

I have met so many new people within the community, including other great mentors and influential community members. It is also wonderful to be able to use my time positively, get out of the house and use my skills to benefit people who need it.

My driving has also changed for the better from being a part of the program. I am more aware and safer on the roads. I enjoy hearing about the new way to drive not only to pass on to the young people who need to know, but for myself!

What advice would you give a young person thinking of engaging with their local PCYC Queensland club?

Volunteer Bill Casey PCYC Nerang Why did you join PCYC Queensland?

I joined PCYC Nerang as a volunteer about five years ago, to be actively involved in Braking the Cycle, and with the outside school hours care (OSHC) bus runs. I was sick of always seeing poor and unsafe drivers on the road, and one day I was told about the PCYC Braking the Cycle program. I thought, that sounds great, I want to do that! I wanted to show more people how to drive safely on our roads and help those young people who couldn’t achieve their driving hours.

The best advice I have for young people who are thinking of engaging with their local PCYC club is to bite the bullet and do it! There are so many programs and activities to suit everyone, and there is always something going on.

What is your favourite PCYC Queensland moment?

I have had so many, it’s hard to say! If I were to generalise, I would have to say my favourite moment is seeing the young people’s faces the moment they are told they passed their drivers test and have earned their Ps. It is the most infectious, overwhelming moment, and the smile on their faces makes you feel over the moon. The young people are always saying thank you, thank you – they are so grateful for what you have done to help them.

What do you enjoy about volunteering with PCYC Queensland?

I like being involved in the success of seeing our young students pass their tests and obtaining their driver’s licence. PCYC Nerang is a positive, fantastic place to be.

The staff always have great attitudes and greet you with a smile every day. Braking the Cycle is such a great, positive program and you really get to see the progress of the young people. Some take longer then others, but it’s fantastic to see their journeys.

Sergeant Caletti said it has been a privilege to have spent a lot of his working career in small communities.

“I’ve been all around the place doing various policing duties, but most of them were rural and out in the country.

Being a country police officer is very beneficial and I’ve really enjoyed being involved in the small communities – you make a big impact.”

After joining the force at the age of 19, Sergeant Caletti has worked across the state over the past four decades.

“I was sworn-in in 1981 in Oxley and from there I ended up in the Gold Coast for a short period of time before heading into country areas. I was in Duaringa for three years, then went to the Atherton Tablelands, Mareeba, Mount Garnet then back down to Wowan. I was also the officer in charge of a one-officer station, then went to Rockhampton, Biloela, Injune and from there I joined PCYC Queensland in 2013.”

He said working at PCYC Queensland is like working with family.

“PCYC Queensland is like one big family – when you can work alongside your wife and daughter and everyone else, you become very attached to everyone. And the best part is, everyone is driving to achieve something for the community.”

Club Manager Sergeant Greg Caletti PCYC Maranoa AFTER spending more of his life in the police force than out of it, Sergeant Greg Caletti is set to hang up his hat and enjoy preretirement bliss. The staff and community recently celebrated and thanked Sergeant Caletti for his 40 years of service, most recently managing PCYC Maranoa.

“It was a fantastic day,” he said. “The best part was seeing the community members that showed up and support the day.”

“But the bond I made with fellow police officers, especially in smaller stations where officers rely on one another, and the friendships I formed was a big highlight of my career.”

“The friends I made with officers in Taroom and Wandoan – it’s that sort of bond and friendship you make which is so special and we’re still friends today.”

For now, Sergeant Caletti’s wife, Melissa Caletti who is based at PCYC Fernvale, has written a big to-do list for his spare time.

“I’ve applied for assistant manager at BCF, just for something different but if I don’t get that role, I’ll be the housemaid,” he joked.

“I officially retire in March next year and that’s when I think it will kick in and I’ll realise I’m no longer a police officer.”

Cam’s ‘fortnight’ becomes 16 years at ant’s nest that’s PCYC JOHNO’S SAY GREG JOHNSON FACEBOOK IS a very happy medium for me because it gives me the opportunity to communicate with the world.

Some nice little surprises turn up, like this recent message I received. “Evening Johno, with all this talk about unemployment, the bonus dole and no jobs etc etc, it’s worth recalling that PCYC’s Cam Crisp hosted a very successful Work for the Dole program. “Might be worth a story or a chat with him.�

So chat with him I did, and he told me the program had ended.

I could have said thank you and headed home, but I decided to push on and find out more about this much-loved character.

He’s humble all right, but he did let go of a few things.

(Sergeant) Cam Crisp attended Toowoomba South Boys School and Centenary Heights State High School and became a Queensland Police cadet in 1982.

In 2004, he became manager of the PCYC (Police-Citizens Youth Club) for a fortnight and 16 years later he’s still there.

Mrs C wanted their son to play football (soccer), and naturally Cam became an instant coach, like so many mums and dads, and in the years following he coached the Toowoomba Thunder and state Futsal

The Toowoomba branch opened in 1969 and, as with all branches, is run by the Queensland Police Service.

Cam has other police officers in the team along with business managers, mentors, 61 staff and volunteers.

I confess my only interaction with PCYC has been at the James St markets on Sunday mornings where I became aware of some serious grunting within its walls – I concluded physical activity was under way.

You might think of PCYC as a charity, so let me assure you that this is one very significant business.

Nothing’s off the burgeoning program which already includes Indigenous sport and recreation, crime prevention initiatives, self-development programs, physical fitness programs for potential victims of domestic violence, and programs for youngsters who are at risk of probable suspension from school.

Martial arts, boxing, dance, gymnastics, fitness, cycle safety and learn to drive programs are in the mix along with vacation care and before and after school care.

Visiting PCYC is akin to being in an ant’s nest, it’s a very busy place.

Sadly for our community, Cam has to retire at 60, which is a Queensland Police requirement, but I bet you’ll still see him around the place for at least another one of his “fortnights�.

BACK IN ACTION Fitness fans return to community gym

TIMOTHY COX THE Emerald PCYC this week raised the shutters on its gym, allowing customers to flex muscles left languid since the coronavirus-induced shutdown.

GYM BOUNCES BACK ONE of Dalby’s most popular gyms has swung back into action now the COVID-19 restrictions have lifted after a three-month suspension.

PCYC Dalby acting club manager Sergeant Lindsay Small said it was wonderful to have the gym open again. “We are so pleased to welcome members safely back into the club, with all gyms complying with the fitness industry COVID-safe plan,�

Sgt Small said. “We now have a booking system in place, as well as increased cleaning and hygiene requirements and restricted opening times, but all our members understand these new protocols and are just happy to return to the gym.�

Gym supervisor Sally Mauch is also thrilled to welcome members back to kickstart their fitness goals once again. “During COVID-19 it has been great staying connected with our fitness community through our online Activ8 @home program,� Ms Mauch said.

More and more people in the community are starting to know and appreciate the great facility and activities the PCYC Hervey Bay offers�.

Leigh also described the PCYC as a place where unleashing kids’ potential starts. “PCYC Hervey Bay is a not-for-profit organisation that aims to enhance our community through youth development. This is encouraged through a caring environment with a wide range of activities for all ages as well as an affordable membership, as well as our gym & activity fees�. “We offer a variety of activities including

gymnastics, boxing, netball, futsal, Dance, FreeG, Group fitness, Tiny Tots, KinderGym, martial arts, senior fitness and cheerleading.�

opened up the youth group, so you become very involved in the kids’ lives, and their parents’, and the wider community – that’s satisfaction.�

After joining the force at the age of 19, Sergeant Caletti has worked across the state over the past four decades. “I was sworn-in in 1981 in Oxley and from there I ended up in the Gold Coast for a short period of time before heading into country areas,� he said. “I was in Duaringa for three years, then went to the Atherton Tablelands, Mareeba, Mount Garnet then back down to Wowan. “I was also the officer in charge of a one-officer station, then went to Rockhampton, Biloela, Injune and from there I joined PCYC in 2013.�

He said working at the PCYC was like working with family. “The role at PCYC is very different to your role as a police officer at a station,�

Sergeant Caletti said. “PCYC is like one big family – when you can work alongside your wife and daughter and everyone else, you become very attached to everyone. “And the best part is, everyone is driving to achieve something for the community. “But the bond I made with fellow police officers,

especially in smaller stations where officers rely on one another, and the friendships I formed was a big highlight of my career. “The friends I made with officers in Taroom and Wandoan – it’s that sort of bond and friendship you make which is so special and we’re still friends today.�

For now, Sergeant Caletti’s wife, Melissa, has written a big to-do list for his spare time.

“I’ve applied for assistant manager at BCF, just for something different but if I don’t get that role, I’ll be the housemaid,� he joked. “I might also volunteer at Fernvale PCYC with Melissa. “But besides that there’s a lot of things around the house that I’ve got to do. “I officially retire in March next year and that’s when I think it will kick in and I’ll realise I’m no longer a police officer.�
