Welcome from the CEO This year marks the 70th anniversary of the opening of our first club, PCYC Lang Park, in 1948. As PCYC Queensland reaches this milestone, we recognise and honour our past, while continuing our journey towards our vision. PCYC Queensland celebrated this achievement with our Gala Ball and held our signature family fun-run, PCYC embRACE, and more.

These events allowed us to showcase what PCYC Queensland offers through community engagement.

PCYC Queensland and the Queensland Police Service (QPS) remain committed to working together in the community to achieve positive outcomes, particularly for young people.

Our strategic priority, as a leading charitable not-forprofit, is also reflected in our government partnerships, particularly with the Queensland Government. These essential partnerships provide considerable in kind and some monetary support, particularly for our Indigenous programs that are funded on an annual basis, to enable us to provide opportunities to benefit young people. These opportunities aim to increase social cohesion, address whole of community needs and have a positive impact in communities across Queensland and beyond.

PCYC Queensland recognises that our work in supporting and addressing youth at risk is far from done and more support is needed. With increased financial support from the Queensland Government and other key stakeholders, PCYC Queensland would be in a stronger position to continue to deliver recurring initiatives that give young people purpose, focus and motivation to make positive choices.

PCYC Queensland strives to achieve best practice and implement continuous improvement within our local communities. Our recent Human Services Quality Standards certification and commitment to governance standards reflects this. Our refined strategic goals for members, people, brand and financial performance ensure we meet and exceed these and our own high compliance standards.

This year, PCYC Queensland has consolidated a number of operational processes, allowing us to achieve stability and ongoing sustainability.

These include a new careers website, volunteer management system, outside school hours care system and financial Shared Services Centre. By implementing these systems and processes, PCYC Queensland has reduced duplication and increased efficiency across the organisation.

Highlights emerge through the delivery of all our youth leadership and development programs across the state. So many of our young people have experienced amazing achievements through their involvement in walking the Kokoda Track in Papua New Guinea, State Youth Leadership Program adventures, our Duke of Edinburgh’s Adventurous Journeys, and over 220 cadets competing in the Emergency Services Cadet Games.

Many of our Gym+Fitness centres have been upgraded this year. As a result, membership levels have risen substantially through our 38 facilities, 27 of which now have 24/7 access, cementing our status as a leading community gym provider. Gymnastics continues to be our most popular sport, and with over 7,500 gymnasts involved in 30 of our clubs, PCYC Queensland is now the largest gymnastics provider in the state.

Perhaps the most significant highlight for this year was the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Representatives from PCYC Queensland participated as baton bearers in the Queen’s Baton Relay; competitors in wrestling, boxing, gymnastics and diving; hosts to dignitaries; partners in the Games’ Indigenous Volunteer Support Program; and, of course, as volunteers and attendees. I am incredibly proud of our involvement in this momentous sporting event and in particular, the way PCYC Queensland embodies sport for positive choice. Thank you to the GC2018 for their generous donation of equipment following the games.

Finally, PCYC Queensland could not achieve all that we do without our dedicated 4,500 staff and volunteers across the state. I congratulate many of them for their own personal achievements this year, including our Youth Volunteer of the Year winner, our longest serving volunteer of 53 years, and over 25 staff and volunteers who have been with PCYC Queensland for more than 20 years. Thank you all for your ongoing loyalty.

I look forward to another exciting year ahead, as PCYC Queensland continues to work together building safer, healthier communities through youth development. I appreciate the wonderful support and generosity of those who enable us to continue making a positive impact in our local communities.

Year in review As you read through this year’s Annual Report I hope that you will see the positive way in which PCYC Queensland impacts our members’ lives. I hope that, like me, you are proud of your role in this whatever it may be within our PCYC Queensland community - whether you are a volunteer, Queensland Police Service (QPS) Officer or civilian staff member, one of our key stakeholders, a club member, supporter, sponsor or an interested member of the public.

The question that often is front of mind for me is “how can PCYC Queensland make an even greater lasting improvement in the lives of the young people we reach?” I have no doubt that PCYC Queensland already has had a profound impact, however we can always do more.

PCYC Queensland engages with young people of all ages. Over 9,000 children attend our outside school hours care services on a weekly basis. Over 11,500 young people have passed through our Bicycle Safety program. More than 4,500 young people - who are at risk, disadvantaged or disengaged were supported through the Safe Communities Program. And more than 270 young people this year have received their drivers’ licence after being supported by skilled volunteer instructors through our Braking the Cycle Program. Plus, so very much more, with over 50,000 young people supported over the last year. Each of these has an effect not only on the individual but also on the wider Queensland community.

Our clubs operate in some of the most in need communities in our state. One of the problems is the limited horizons and ambitions many of these young people see as achievable, given their daily challenges. Our wonderful staff, QPS officers and volunteers do so much to inspire these young people every day, whatever their dream may be. Whether it is obtaining their licence, getting fit or giving them the ambition to see the world, not just their local town.

PCYC Queensland can help young people to set goals for themselves, if it is their dream. For others, their local PCYC Queensland club is there simply to support them to achieve whatever they want to do.

There is always more that our PCYC Queensland community can do.

Travel is often considered a wonderful way to achieve these extended horizons. Seeing people overcome challenges in other places allows the individual to put their own challenges into perspective and seeing how other people have risen above their limitations can inspire you to rise above your own.

Our Bunburra Indigenous Programs Beach Touch Football Tournament, part of the Sport & Culture Corroboree brings to the Gold Coast young people who may never have seen the ocean or a city before.

Some of our young people travel outside Australia for the first time to trek the Kokoda Track as part of their Duke of Edinburgh International Award. Several PCYC Queensland members competed in the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games in boxing, diving and gymnastics and rubbed shoulders with the world. A number of these athletes will go on to compete in future Commonwealth and Olympic Games, or professional endeavours in their chosen fields. It is these ‘horizon expanding’ opportunities that I challenge you to find more of, for our young people.

Whilst PCYC Queensland clubs’ impact local communities, it is our responsibility as an organisation to think globally. So please take any chance you can to inspire the young people you engage with every day, challenge them to travel further, dream bigger and achieve more and to lead the truly extraordinary lives of which they are all capable. No matter what their dream may be.

Governance, charity status & our business Governance

Our business

Queensland Police-Citizens Youth Welfare Association (QPCYWA) is our registered name.

QPCYWA is a constitutional member-based association and a company limited by guarantee to ensure we can deliver our vision. Our Board oversees our governance to assist local operations that operate under our trading name, PCYC Queensland.

QPCYWA operates in the local community under our business name PCYC Queensland. Our 54 clubs operationalise our vision by delivering local programs and services, to meet youth development, crime prevention and local community needs.

Our PCYC Queensland story PCYC Queensland celebrates our 70th anniversary this year. As we reach this important milestone we reflect on and celebrate our history and past achievements.

PCYC Queensland is a registered charity supporting more than 73,000 members across 54 clubs from Cape York to the Gold Coast.

Together we are building safer, healthier communities through youth development.

For 70 years, PCYC Queensland has been a leading provider of community sport and recreation programs, services and facilities. PCYC Queensland works together with the QPS to meet local and community youth needs through the delivery of different programs and activities, gym+fitness, outside school hours care and more.

PCYC Queensland clubs play a vital role in the lives of young people who are at risk, disadvantaged or disengaged. Our clubs provide opportunities for over 50,000 young people to have a positive experience, get involved in a range of activities, and benefit from mentors and community leaders, including serving police officers.

Our three pillars of youth development, crime prevention and community engagement underpin all that we do.

Fundraising through the decades As we celebrate 70 years of working together in our communities, we are able to reflect on the many thousands of young people who have grown up in our PCYC Queensland clubs, like Byron. When Byron was six-years-old, he discovered his passion for basketball at his local PCYC Queensland club. As a teenager, he participated in the Deep Blue Line program to develop self-confidence. At 18, Byron finished high school and obtained his driver’s licence with the help of our mentoring driving program, Braking the Cycle. Byron has continued his passion for sport and is now an aspiring basketball player. Thanks to the generosity of PCYC Queensland supporters, we can continue to help young people in the community like Byron, reach for their dreams.

Your PCYC Queensland stories Your stories PCYC Queensland programs continue to receive regular media coverage through your stories on a local, regional and state level. State wide programs such as Braking the Cycle and RUBY have gained significant media coverage and attention, resulting in substantial positive outcomes.

Our media coverage demonstrates how PCYC Queensland’s programs and activities benefit the community as a whole, raise awareness, and increase participation.

This year, PCYC Queensland media reached an audience of 33.2 million through print, radio, online and TV, generating an equivalent advertising space rate (ASR) of $4.2 million.

Social media engagement PCYC Queensland is reaching a wider audience through social media channels and engagement. Our PCYC Queensland club pages achieved an average annual reach of over 5.2 million and over 121,000 followers regularly engage with us through our social media channels, namely, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and LinkedIn.

Spotlight Jo-Nesha, PCYC Cairns Jo-Nesha, a 14-year-old girl from Cairns, who after initially attending activities designed to positively engage young people, was identified with leadership potential.

Encouraged, Jo-Nesha engaged with PCYC Queensland’s Participate, Lead, Champion (PLC) program.

Jo-Nesha also became involved with ‘We all dance – 3M project’ that PCYC Queensland and a group of Cairns services implemented to improve engagement within three suburbs of Mooroobool, Mununda and Manoora. As the result of a music video, created with local rap artists Last Kinnection, telling the story of hope the young people have for their community, 3M were then invited to dance with the Brisbane Ballet.

Jo-Nesha completed her Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award and Level 1 State Youth Leadership Program (SYLP) with PCYC Queensland. Throughout these programs, Jo‑Nesha has been supported to develop and use a wide range of life skills. “It was a challenge to trust people I didn’t know at SYLP. I got to know people and build a strong connection with them during the program, so to learn to trust new people was a big deal for me,” she said.

Jo-Nesha is grateful and hopes to continue her many positive experiences with PCYC Queensland. “Thank you for your support and help, it has really helped. We were struggling at times. The positive impact from the branch and programs like PLC has made our community more open.”

With leadership skills and strategies, Jo‑Nesha now has the confidence to encourage others to get out of the house and have fun. “Life can be hard sometimes, but you’ve just got to get through it, so I help the young kids out when they need it.”

In your community PCYC Queensland has five zones across the state, with 54 clubs within these zones. Each club offers a mixture of programs and activities to meet the needs of communities. Many clubs also feature facilities including halls, kitchens and meeting rooms available for hire.

Our clubs are unique because each one is managed by a serving police officer. Zones are overseen by both a Zone Development Manager and Senior Sergeant, illustrating the partnership between PCYC Queensland and the QPS.

Zone teams also include Youth Management and Indigenous Programs representatives who undertake activities throughout the year with local communities, such as our important Breakfast of Champions series.

Zone Highlights PCYC Cloncurry’s extended gym opening hours increased attendances to over 15,000 visits during the year. Two new Youth and Community Engagement Officers introduced new activities and programs, resulting in over 170 additional attendances. The Curry Knock Out Program continues to encourage mentor relationships between youth, community leaders and local police and this year featured over 150 attendances.

PCYC Edmonton’s Youth Management Team joined the Edmonton Youth Community Sleepout to help raise funds and generate awareness of the issues that face young people experiencing homelessness.

Spotlight PCYC Mount Isa Branch Manager Wins International Policing Award PCYC Mount Isa’s Sergeant Gina Scott has been internationally recognised for her outstanding contribution to the Mount Isa community. She is one of three female police officers to receive this year’s awards from the International Association of Women Police.

Sergeant Scott was recognised with the ‘Community Service’ award for her exemplary actions within the Mount Isa community. She identified challenges with youth crime in the area and implemented a weekly program to provide at-risk young people with free activities including sport, art and craft and referral options to community groups for those seeking further support. The initiative has increased community confidence with the police and has significantly decreased disengagement among youths.

This year, Sergeant Scott was also chosen to represent Mount Isa in the Queen’s Baton Relay for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games. She was selected for her personal and professional dedication to improving youth development and has been the branch manager at PCYC Mount Isa for over eight years.

Zone Highlights Following Tropical Cyclone Debbie in March 2017, many of the clubs in the zone continue to be affected. PCYC Bowen and PCYC Whitsundays were both severely damaged, and remain closed while refurbishment takes place. Despite the clubs being closed, services have continued in these communities due to our dedicated staff maintaining core activities in other locations. PCYC Bowen has also been instrumental in the $400,000 redevelopment of the local skate park.

PCYC Upper Ross underwent a complete relocation and upgrade of their gym+fitness centre, which resulted in gym memberships increasing by over 700%.

PCYC Townsville’s gym was also relocated and transformed into a 24/7 facility. A new purpose-built gymnastics room was also developed, resulting in over 200 attendances each week. PCYC Innisfail also moved its gymnastics centre, which has seen a 30% increase in members.

Spotlight PCYC Burdekin produces national boxing champions!

PCYC Burdekin celebrates the achievements of two of their boxers – Damon Pitcher and Emma Lawson.

Damon Pitcher started boxing at the club when he was eightyears-old and started competing at the age of 10. Now 13, and after several years of competition, Damon has achieved Gold medals in both State and National titles, and was recently the youngest member selected for Boxing Queensland’s Development Squad.

At 18, Emma Lawson is already a celebrated boxer. Emma’s career highlights include winning two National titles, and being ranked #5 in the World Junior Rankings.

She was selected for the Australian team to compete in the Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires in October 2018.

These are incredible achievements not only for Damon and Emma, but also for their coach Alex “Chook” Lawson (Emma’s father), who was also named as one of Boxing Queensland’s Development Squad coaches.

Zone Highlights Braking the Cycle at PCYC Rockhampton continues to grow, with over 130 learner drivers successfully obtaining their licence and the addition of 30 volunteer driving mentors. The Get Set for Work Program, now in its 4th year, continues to provide training and vocational opportunities to young people, with around 40 members successfully completing this program each year.

PCYC Deception Bay gymnastics program has expanded considerably and now has over 220 members. PCYC Emerald continues to see positive outcomes from programs including RUBY, Love Bites and Fatal Five.

PCYC Sunshine Coast branch manager embodies the power of mentoring A young man was arrested earlier this year after breaking into the PCYC Sunshine Coast club twice. After his arrest, this man bravely faced up to his actions and apologised to branch manager Sergeant Billy Li. When Sergeant Li discovered the reason the 20-year-old was breaking in was because he wanted to stay fit but had no money, he put him on a program and sponsored his membership.

The Sergeant saw this as an opportunity to help him get his life back on track, taking him under his wing and becoming his mentor.

In return, the man does volunteer work helping to clean the club, and has been regularly attending the gym ever since.

Sergeant Li says PCYC Queensland is there to help youth get back on track.

“I’ve seen a lot of changes in him. This has certainly changed his view of QPS,” said Sergeant Li.

Zone Highlights PCYC Goondiwindi successfully launched the Riverview Function Centre, a great community venue located on the MacIntyre River. Following this successful event, bookings and memberships have steadily increased. Gym+fitness memberships have also increased due to the upgraded gym and expanded gymnastics program.

PCYC Toowoomba remains a pivotal youth centre, with an average of 9,500 members accessing the club every month through a diverse range of youth leadership and crime prevention programs such as Restart, Love Bites, Onyx, Jade and Catalyst.

Braking the Cycle’s vehicle fleet has grown to five.

Now featuring 90 participants and 45 mentors, the program has resulted in 64 young people receiving their licences and 30 gaining employment.

PCYC Ipswich’s gym+fitness centre has also recently transformed into a state-of-the-art 24/7 facility with new equipment and programs.

Spotlight PCYC Logan Gymnasts embody sport for positive choice!

Congratulations to our amazing gymnasts at PCYC Logan. The Senior International Rhythmic Gymnastics team which includes Heather Blakeway, Tiah McLaren, Melisa Lawrie, Theresa Hammond and Alexis Lane were named on the National squad and invited to compete at this year’s Rhythmic Gymnastics World Cup and Rhythmic Gymnastics World Championships.

Tiah was also awarded the 2017 Australian Levels Gymnast of the Year, and Kerrie Mancini, PCYC Logan Rhythmic Gymnastics Head Coach, was awarded the 2017 Australian Levels Coach of the Year. Several of our junior gymnasts also won awards at the 2018 Australian Gymnastics Championships including Lucy Auton, Millie Hintz and Bree Webster.

Zone Highlights PCYC Lang Park’s gym has been completely redeveloped. The amazing transformation into a new 24/7 facility has led to a 339% increase in memberships. Excitingly, PCYC Lang Park has also been nominated as the official training gym for the Queensland Reds.

PCYC Gold Coast’s boxing team has had another successful year, competing in over 15 tournaments including the Haringey Box Cup, Europe’s largest amateur boxing event, and the Golden Gloves tournament, Boxing Australia’s premier event.

Spotlight PCYC Mount Gravatt helping young people achieve their dreams Jesse Brunel, 17, has been with PCYC Mount Gravatt for more than two years. Starting his journey with PCYC Queensland as part of the Youth Support Program, Jesse is now a boxing regular and is also working towards obtaining his driver’s licence through Braking the Cycle. Jesse dreams of becoming a landscaper and knows that getting his licence will be vital for him to gain employment.

“Lots of people at PCYC Queensland have really helped me, including giving me emotional support. Gary has been a great mentor, Sandie organises all my Braking the Cycle driving lessons, and Gareth my boxing instructor helped me to deal with my issues and helps me to train really hard,” said Jesse.

Spotlight Jess began her PCYC Queensland journey over 10 years ago when she joined the Youth Management Team at PCYC Beenleigh. She is now the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award Coordinator.

I started my PCYC Queensland journey in 2007 when I walked into PCYC Beenleigh to find support for my younger brother, looking for something to get him involved in. While I was there talking to the youth worker, she asked me about myself and told me about the Youth Management Team (YMT) as she thought it might be something I would be interested in pursuing. Not long after joining the YMT, I started completing the Duke of Edinburgh’s (DoE) International Award. All the DoE activities were new to me, so the idea of starting this was both exciting and terrifying. I had previously lived my life without any real direction, and having to set goals and expectations for the next six months seemed like a huge task. However, I completed my Award by attending the gym weekly, focussing on personal development, volunteering at PCYC Queensland clubs and completing my Adventurous Journey.

Through the DoE Award I was able to start thinking about my future and began to realise that things that were previously out of my reach, were now achievable with a bit of hard work, dedication and commitment. The DoE and PCYC Queensland helped me realise that my current situation did not have to be permanent, and that I can have whatever life I dreamed of having.

Not long after completing my Bronze Award I started working for PCYC Crestmead as a trainee, and soon after had the opportunity to run DoE. At PCYC Crestmead I supported a number of young people through their Awards and Adventurous Journeys, which sparked my love for the outdoors. I love being able to provide other young people with the same opportunities that were provided to me. I continued to complete my own Award levels while doing this and continuously working to improve myself. This led me to travel for a year while volunteering overseas and studying Spanish, which was another dream that the DoE Award and PCYC Queensland helped me achieve.

After travelling, I returned to my current role as PCYC Queensland DoE International Award Coordinator.

I love this role because I am now able to support staff to facilitate this incredible program, and provide opportunities to young people by supporting them to set goals for themselves and seeing them smash them! I also get to share my passion for the outdoors and travel with participants through running our peak experience programs to Kokoda and Overland. The Award helps participants to dream big, but also gives them the tools to make those dreams a reality. It empowers young people to explore their full potential regardless of their location or circumstance.

Because of the tools that PCYC Queensland and the Award has taught me – I was the first in my family to complete year 12, and am the first to complete secondary education. I have gained and maintained full-time employment which has funded my dreams of traveling all over the world. I am now in a place where I know that if I want to achieve something I know I can do it, and am continuously working towards creating a better life for myself. I am so grateful for how far I have come already. I continue to participate in my own ‘Award’ even though I am passed the age-limit, but I believe that applying the DoE framework to my life keeps me always working on myself.

The younger years PCYC Queensland offers lots of ways for younger children to have fun and active experiences at our clubs, from our outside school hours care (OSHC) services, to KinderGym, dance and martial arts, and programs such as Bicycle Safety.

KinderGym KinderGym provides a fun way for children aged five and under to learn the basics of gymnastics, with parents, children and coaches all participating together. KinderGym is a developmental program which stimulates motor skills, strength, hand-eye coordination and helps to create a general sense of self in younger children as they use a range of movements.

Bicycle Safety Bicycle Safety provides a valuable service to the community by teaching young people practical riding skills, road rules and how to identify hazards within the environment where they cycle. It helps raise awareness of traffic and road conditions, safety techniques and bike handling skills.

Outside School Hours Care PCYC Queensland provides outside school hours care (OSHC) services for young people in 113 locations across school sites and our PCYC Queensland clubs. OSHC services include before school care, after school care and vacation care.

Our broader vision and mission directly define our approach of focussing on the social, emotional and physical development of the young people in our care.

This year has seen significant changes impacting our OSHC services, and the sector in general. Many of our services successfully completed assessment and rating under the National Quality Framework.

All services are now operating under the new National Quality Standard (NQS) that took effect in February 2018.

This year, PCYC Queensland centralised the OSHC service management system. With the introduction of a Head of Outside School Hours Care and three Regional Managers supporting 16 Service Managers, we are now positioned to support the management, upskilling, training and mentoring of our OSHC services and take our business growth and financial management to an exciting new level.

The Federal Government’s new Child Care Subsidy scheme was the biggest change to the distribution of child care fee assistance to families since 2012. Our staff supported families throughout the process to minimise the impact and effectively maintain services.

Spotlight Theresa Totman, OSHC Service Manager Theresa started her PCYC Queensland journey over 35 years ago, attending trampolining and gymnastics at PCYC Fortitude Valley. Then aged 16 she became the club’s trampoline coach. After spending years as a volunteer at PCYC Bornhoffen running school camps and education programs, Theresa left PCYC Queensland to raise a family, and returned as an OSHC Coordinator in 2002. She progressed to become an OSHC Area Manager and is now an OSHC Service Manager.

Young people’s personal development PCYC Queensland provides young people with an environment that supports individual development, encourages community connection and celebrates diversity.

Preparing young people to meet the challenges of adolescence and adulthood is a fundamental part of our vision. Many of our programs encourage young people’s personal development, such as Deep Blue Line and Braking the Cycle. We are also provided with funding to implement other important government initiatives such as Youth Support Services, Safe Communities Program and Emergency Services Cadets.

Deep Blue Line Deep Blue Line is a police mentoring program that aims to enhance young people’s positive sense of self, boost self-esteem, provide a variety of positive life experiences, encourage goal setting behaviours and expose participants to healthy role models.

The program is gender-specific and can be adapted to cater for young males or females as a small group of up to ten participants. Weekly sessions deliver life skills and interactions with mentors based around the key learning areas of communication, wellbeing and positive futures.

Safe Communities Program PCYC Queensland was funded by the Attorney General’s Department as part of the Safer Streets Initiative enabling bespoke crime prevention initiatives to be delivered to ten different communities burdened with high levels of criminal and anti social behaviour.

Following 14 months of program delivery across the ten locations, 140 crime prevention programs were delivered, in excess of 4,000 young people at risk were engaged and the team attendance figures reached over 16,000.

Braking the Cycle Braking the Cycle is our volunteer driver mentor program designed to support learner drivers without access to a supervisor or registered vehicle to complete their logbook hours. The aim of the program is to provide young people with increased employment opportunities, community connection and driver education.

Youth Support Services

Youth Justice

PCYC Queensland and the Department of Child Safety, Youth and Women are committed to benefiting young Queenslanders. The funding we receive allows us to deliver Youth Support Services in 13 locations across metropolitan, regional and remote Queensland communities. Our focus is on providing case-managed support for vulnerable young people to strengthen relationships with their families and support networks.

Youth Justice works to improve community safety and reduce reoffending by young people who have been involved with the youth justice system.

PCYC Queensland also worked collaboratively with the Department to inform the development of the Queensland Youth Strategy. This involved developing and implementing a youth consultation process for over 1,200 young people.

Emergency Services Cadets PCYC Queensland in partnership with Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES), delivers the Emergency Services Cadets (ESC) program at 14 locations. ESC is a dynamic program that engages young cadets under the guidance of volunteer Adult Leaders to acquire a diverse range of emergency service skills, develop their leadership potential and encourages them to explore a rewarding career in emergency services.

This year cadets were involved in a variety of training and development opportunities such as the Southern Cadet Games, ESCape Week, the Kokoda Track in Papua New Guinea, Australian Fire Cadet Championships, Adult Leader Conference and the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Spotlight Cadet Brayden Wright Starting Cadets at 13-years-old, Brayden has been a dedicated volunteer for his community for over four years. Two years into his cadetship, Brayden was identified as a natural leader and attended PCYC Queensland’s State Youth Leadership Program (SYLP) to build on his skills.

In 2017, Brayden represented Hughenden ESC at ESCape Week – the ESC’s prestigious recognition program. Returning to SYLP for Level Two in 2018, Brayden’s leadership journey and development has been shaped by his experience in the Emergency Services Cadets, and where he is currently a Cadet Section Leader, having successfully led three teams in the Cadet Games.

Young people’s leadership development PCYC Queensland’s leadership development programs aim to develop and support, challenge and inspire young people to recognise and achieve their leadership potential.

State Youth Leadership Program The PCYC Queensland State Youth Leadership Program (SYLP) is a multi-stage training program designed to develop young people aged 14-25 into leaders. This is achieved through adventure based learning and engaging challenges. It offers young people a chance to step out of their comfort zone, challenge themselves and develop skills useful in school, community, work and life.

This year four SYLP adventures took place at our two Leadership Development Centres, PCYC Bornhoffen in the Gold Coast Hinterland and PCYC Capricorn Coast in Yeppoon, and included 155 participants, 13 youth coaches and six branch managers.

Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award The Duke of Edinburgh’s (DoE) International Award is a leading youth development program, empowering young people aged 14-24 to explore their full potential, learn skills, improve their physical wellbeing, volunteer in their community and experience a team adventure. Participants are required to complete four sections at each level that encompass service, skill, physical recreation and an adventurous journey.

PCYC Queensland is one of the leading licensees facilitating the DoE International Award Program, and this year marks our 10th year of delivering the Award to young people across Queensland. During this time, we have delivered over 1,100 levels of the Awards and welcomed more than 500 young people through the program.

This year, PCYC Queensland was also honoured to receive a Duke of Edinburgh Employer Award, which was presented at a special ceremony by Prince Edward Earl of Wessex.

Spotlight Rohan Concick, PCYC Mt Gravatt “When I first started the DoE Award, right back in grade seven I was a very shy, reserved boy who didn’t like speaking to people very much. I doubted my ability to overcome a lot of challenges, and was scared of just about everything. Throughout my journey I have grown into someone who now does things that boy could never have dreamt of doing.

I’ve spoken in front of hundreds of people, sung and danced in front of hundreds more people, scaled 40m cliffs while rock climbing, been on leadership camps, hiked and canoed many kilometres and much more. I cannot say that I am no longer scared of all of those things, but I know that I have come a long way from the person I was when I started the DoE Award, and I could not be more proud of who I have become.”

Kokoda – Adventurous Journey As part of the Adventurous Journey component of the DoE International Award, 12 teenagers, their mentors and staff successfully conquered the Kokoda Track last year. Each day involved hiking between 7-10 hours, camping in local villages, visiting small schools, completing memorial services and enjoying the company of locals. Two nights in Port Moresby and a visit to the Bomara War Cemetery, where 3,000 servicemen are buried, concluded the life changing trip.

After working her way through the levels of the DoE Awards, Jessica learnt to play two musical instruments, and how to drive. She expanded her volunteering efforts to St John’s Ambulance and umpiring. Her best moment came when she was selected for the Kokoda Track as a part of her Gold Adventurous Journey, with her proudest moment being the commitment to finish all levels.

Youth Management Teams

PCYC Bornhoffen

Youth Management Teams (YMTs) are located in many of our clubs and provide opportunities for young people to develop leadership skills and abilities. YMT members comprise of leadership students who have attended school-based programs, young people who already attend activities or volunteer at their club, DoE Award participants, or local school leaders. Our YMTs play instrumental roles in their local club assisting as volunteers by running discos, activities and other larger events.

Teams meet regularly, set their own goals, create and complete their own youth-related projects, and try out different leadership roles.

This year PCYC Bornhoffen celebrates 40 years of operation. The leadership centre is located on a spectacular 95-hectare property in the Gold Coast Hinterland, adjacent to the World Heritage listed Lamington and Springbrook National Parks.

Team members are encouraged to continue growing their own leadership skills, with some becoming elected as Youth Delegates (16 to 25-year-olds), who present issues affecting young people and play an advisory role on activities and events for young people in their local community.

Leadership Development Centres PCYC Queensland has two Leadership Development Centres – PCYC Bornhoffen in the Gold Coast Hinterland (featured) and PCYC Capricorn Coast in Yeppoon. Both centres provide group accommodation, professional catering services and adventure activities and are available for community members to hire.

Leadership learning and adventure experiences are offered at PCYC Bornhoffen through different school Outdoor Education programs, community programs including SYLP, and group accommodation. In addition to the spectacular natural environment, cabin accommodation and full catering service, PCYC Bornhoffen is renowned for its adventure experiences including high ropes, abseiling, rock climbing, canoeing and rafting.

Our Indigenous programs PCYC Queensland continues to work closely with local Indigenous communities.

PCYC Queensland works in partnership with QPS, Queensland Government and Indigenous communities to deliver a range of sporting, recreation and youth development programs.

The ICSRP includes a diverse range of over 70 different sporting, recreation, cultural, youth development and crime prevention activities that promote health, wellbeing and safer communities.

Community engagement Traditional games and events play a significant part in our Indigenous programs, with the following available to participants by ICSRP officers invitation only.

Bunburra Bunburra, the Yugambeh word for ‘beach’ is our Indigenous Beach Touch Football Tournament, that provides young boys and girls aged 14-17 in Indigenous communities the chance to participate in an annual competition held on the Gold Coast.

Deadly 3s Deadly 3s is an annual three-on-three basketball tournament for adults from Indigenous communities across Far North and North Queensland.

As another event by invitation, it is the only major basketball tournament of its kind in Far North Queensland and continues to have a broad representation of communities participating with many participants organising smaller competitions in their own communities.

Bunburra fosters sporting skills and leadership qualities and rewards motivated young people who are selected for their behaviour, and ongoing achievements throughout the year. It provides the opportunity to meet in an environment that supports pride, identity and achievement. Participants often develop the confidence and ability to play a key role in sports development and community engagement within their own communities.

Catch Me If You Can Catch Me If You Can is an innovative program using sports to develop and improve relationships between Indigenous school students and local police. As part of the program, students are matched with a police officer of their choice and participate in team building activities and a friendly sporting competition.

This allows students and police officers to get to know each other in a healthy environment and build positive, respectful relationships.

Indigenous Volunteer Support Program for GC2018 This year marked the commencement of the Indigenous Volunteer Support Program (IVSP), a legacy initiative created for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Our Indigenous Programs team partnered with The Office of the Commonwealth Games to support more than 60 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people across Queensland to participate in the IVSP. Our team worked tirelessly to manage the logistics of engaging, selecting and training Indigenous volunteers for the Games and PCYC Queensland congratulate the efforts of all the staff and volunteers involved.

Health & wellness for everyone PCYC Queensland’s health and wellness programs have been designed to offer something for everyone, regardless of their age, skills or fitness goals.

Many of our clubs feature creches, group fitness rooms, cafés, meeting rooms and youth lounge areas, to encourage the community to come together.

Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games PCYC Queensland staff, volunteers and members alike all showed spectacular commitment to the recent Commonwealth Games, embodying our vision of sport for positive choice.

From club members who competed in the Games including PCYC Pine Rivers boxer Liam Wilson, PCYC Lang Park wrestler Tom Cicchini, PCYC Gold Coast diver Domonic Bedggood and former PCYC Ashmore gymnast Georgia Godwin, to our volunteers, and all those chosen as Batonbearers – you all did us proud!

Following the Games, PCYC Queensland were also honoured to receive legacy equipment from a variety of sports including gymnastics, weightlifting, boxing, netball, squash and beach volleyball. This equipment was much appreciated and benefits many of our clubs across the state.

Gymnastics Gymnastics continues to be PCYC Queensland’s most popular sport.

Our positive relationship with Gymnastics Queensland, coupled with a strong focus on implementing our future Pathways Program and a unified gymnastics curriculum across all clubs has made PCYC Queensland the largest provider of gymnastics in the state.

With over 7,500 gymnasts at 30 of our clubs, 20 of which are registered Gymnastics Queensland centres, PCYC Queensland has achieved the most growth awards for any gymnastics sporting association for the past two years.

Our Pathways Program that is soon to be rolled out across every PCYC Queensland club offering gymnastics, will aim to help all gymnasts achieve greater skill development through a consistent syllabus - from KinderGym and recreation, through to performance and competition.

Boxing Boxing continues to hold an important place in PCYC Queensland’s history as our foundation offering at PCYC Lang Park, our first official club in 1948. Today 70 years on, boxing remains one of our most popular activities, with many of our 38 Gym+Fitness centres also offering boxercise and boxfit classes.

Congratulations to all our boxers and clubs that have celebrated wins and achievements this year including PCYC Gold Coast and PCYC Burdekin.

PCYC Pine Rivers boxing club has had another hugely successful year under coach Benny Harrington, with the team boasting more Australian Champions than any other state, winning 15 gold medals at the Queensland State Titles, nine gold medals at the Australian Championships and a further nine gold medals at the National Golden Gloves Tournament.

Spotight Liam Wilson, PCYC Pine Rivers PCYC Pine Rivers boxer Liam Wilson, 22, is a wonderful ambassador for sport and PCYC Queensland. He started boxing when he was 10 years old and has had an incredible journey winning 122 from 135 fights. He has been representing Australia since the age of 14 and, after claiming his first senior title at the 2017 Elite Australian Boxing Championships, he was selected to compete at the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Liam’s mental drive, passion and dedication make him a dominant competitor. He promised his father who passed away when he was 15, that he would win a world title – and it is a promise he is determined to keep.

Liam has been training at PCYC Pine Rivers under head coach Ben Harrington for the past two years, and is proud to be part of one of the most successful amateur boxing clubs in the state. He is especially proud to be a PCYC Queensland youth ambassador alongside his mentor and sparring partner, former World Boxing Organisation (WBO) welterweight champion Jeff Horn.

Martial Arts

Dance

PCYC Queensland offers a number of martial arts programs throughout our clubs, including Aikido, Ju Jitsu, Judo, Karate, MMA, Muay Thai, Taekwondo and Tai Chi.

Dancing has increased in popularity throughout all our clubs. PCYC Queensland now offer a range of dancing programs, from hip hop to ballroom dancing, tap, jazz, funk, ballet, to contemporary, line dancing, Zumba and more! Many clubs also offer cheerleading, acrobatic dance and Eisteddford team classes.

Martial arts training provides a great platform for children and adults alike to strengthen all aspects of health and fitness, learn self-defence techniques, and improve self-confidence and general wellbeing.

All clubs offering martial arts have qualified and experienced instructors with classes teaching techniques and styles to suit all ages and skill levels.

Our dance classes cater for children to adults, with baby ballet for kids as young as two, to line dancing and Zumba Gold for over 50’s.

Gym+Fitness

Key Programs

PCYC Queensland has 38 gyms across the state, all featuring commercial quality equipment and large training rooms. Currently 27 of these offer 24-hour access including PCYC Ipswich and PCYC Lang Park, both of which have recently been transformed through major refurbishments.

RUBY

Our qualified fitness professionals help people of all abilities to achieve fitness goals. We offer personal training services and fun group classes such as pilates, yoga, Zumba, HIIT, boxercise, circuits and more.

RUBY (Rise Up, Be Yourself) is a free physical fitness program for women who are, have been, or likely to be experiencing domestic and family violence. Held weekly at 31 PCYC clubs across Queensland, RUBY is designed to empower women by building physical strength and contributing to general well-being, emotional resilience, self-esteem and confidence through physical exercise in a violence free and safe environment.

RUBY is offered to women over 18, or over 16 who are living independently. Classes are run by qualified fitness instructors and female police officers.

Over 50’s Fitness This year we have implemented a number of fitness classes for seniors such as Move for Life, Zumba Gold and group classes to improve mobility, muscular conditioning, balance and flexibility. Our seniors fitness programs offer supportive and friendly environments great for social interaction and building relationships, as well as achieving fitness goals. These classes have grown in popularity across many of our clubs.

Healthy Bodies, Health Minds Healthy Bodies, Healthy Minds is a communitybased recovery program that addresses the physical and emotional wellbeing of people recovering from mental health issues. Participants complete an eight week exercise and healthy eating program supervised by a personal trainer, tailored to each individuals’ abilities.

Our community events PCYC Queensland and our clubs host a wide range of large and small events to benefit local communities, raising valuable funds to support our youth development and crime prevention programs.

Important community festivals such as the PCYC Inala Multicultural Festival, PCYC Nerang Funanza and NAIDOC Week events attract thousands of local supporters.

PCYC Gala Ball On 19 May 2018 over 450 guests helped us celebrate our 70th anniversary at the PCYC Queensland Gala Ball. It was an evening of celebration and reflection as we looked back on 70 years of building safer, healthier communities through youth development. Highlights of the evening included wonderful entertainment by QPS Pipes and Drums, Divine our Destiny dance crew, Band of Blue and RedTie.

PCYC embRACE Our inaugural family-friendly signature event PCYC embRACE was held on 22 July 2018. PCYC embRACE had something for everyone including a 5.5km walk/race starting at PCYC Tudor Park, fun inflatable obstacles along the Logan River Parklands, and a 1.5km dash for our younger members. The event culminated in a fun festival at PCYC Beenleigh, where everyone enjoyed games, onstage entertainment, a sausage sizzle and more inflatable fun! Check out Facebook for our next event.

PCYC Golf Day Our annual PCYC Queensland Golf Day held on 3 November 2017 saw 17 teams come together for a great day at the McLeod Country Golf Course.

Supporters were encouraged to take on some fun challenges including hole-in-one, speed gun and longest drive competitions.

PCYC Queensland clubs also host many important community festivals and events.

Palm Island Colour Run PCYC Palm Island held its first Colour Run as part of the Palm Island NAIDOC Week Celebrations. Over 40 children took part in this fun filled event, which consisted of four laps of the course with local kids throwing the coloured powder at each other during the run, before celebrating with a sausage sizzle back at the club. Thank you to the Palm Island Police and SOS Health for lending a hand for this great community event.

PCYC Maranoa – ColourXplosion The 3rd annual PCYC Maranoa ColourXplosion this year welcomed over 300 participants. The ColourXplosion is a family friendly event that encourages people of all ages to meet and walk, ride or run on a 5km track, while being blasted with colour at each colour station.

Charity Golf Days Many PCYC Queensland clubs including PCYC Deception Bay and PCYC Redcliffe run a charity golf day each year to help with raising much needed funds to help support PCYC Queensland youth development programs. Charity golf days provide a great golfing experience, first class social event, and networking opportunities, where the community and sponsors are invited to come together.

PCYC Inala Multicultural Day PCYC Inala once again hosted their hugely successful 7th annual Inala Multicultural Youth Day, with a record crowd of over 7,000 in attendance.

People of all ages celebrated diversity and harmony in the thriving multicultural community, and enjoyed free rides, games, crafts, performances by local artists and musicians, reptile shows, exotic cuisine, driving simulations, and face painting.

PCYC Beenleigh – Community Fun Day This year, PCYC Beenleigh’s Possibility Program, which helps people with a disability to access quality sport and recreational programs, hosted their 3rd annual Community Fun Day during Disability Action Week. More than 450 people from the community came along to participate.

PCYC Beenleigh worked with Netball Queensland, Touch Queensland, Volleyball Queensland, Rugby Queensland, Multicap, AFL Queensland and Bowls Queensland to bring the Community Fun Day together, which featured a DJ, free sausage sizzle and 10 different sports to try.

Mareeba Family Fun Day PCYC Mareeba collaborated with other Mareeba agencies to host another successful Family Fun Day during National Aboriginal and Islander Day Observance Committee (NAIDOC) Week Celebrations. This inclusive community event, held for the 3rd year in a row, brought together over 400 locals who enjoyed Indigenous dancing performances, face painting, arts and craft, traditional Indigenous games, a jumping castle and climbing wall.

PCYC Nerang – Family Funanza PCYC Nerang’s 2nd annual Family Funanza was another huge success with over 60 market stalls and local community groups, and 18 food vans/food vendors. Over 7,000 people attended the fun community day which featured activity demonstrations, entertainment, family games, a jumping castle, giant slide, rides and more.

Thank you to Nerang Paradise Country Parklands for providing free parking, Nerang Bunnings for sponsoring rides, a Nerang High School music teacher for managing all the stage performances, and their own YMT who did a wonderful job running the BBQ.

Spotlight Leanne & Steve Eggins, Donors Meet Leanne and Steve Eggins, who have supported PCYC Queensland over the years as volunteers, donors and members.

Leanne Eggins first learnt about PCYC Queensland as a serving Police Officer. Having worked within a PCYC club in the 80s and 90s, Leanne knows firsthand the impact that a PCYC club and its members have on the local community.

PCYC Queensland’s longest serving volunteer Betty Paxton

Emily Ireland Betty is a PCYC Queensland Life Member, and as our longest serving volunteer has been involved with PCYC Redcliffe for almost 53 years.

In her years of volunteering, Betty has held positions of Club Delegate, President, Secretary, Treasurer, Coach and Statistician.

In recognition of her outstanding volunteer service to softball, Betty has received numerous Softball Queensland awards, and has a softball field ‘The Betty Paxton Field’ named in her honour. In 2000 she received a Medal (OAM) of the Order of Australia in the General Division at the Queen’s Birthday Honours, for her significant and extensive volunteer service to softball as an administrator, coach and to the young people of Redcliffe.

Betty epitomises in every sense, what it means to be a volunteer. She has consistently and unselfishly given her time to the sport of softball, to PCYC Queensland and, to the general community for decades.
