Message from the CEO Welcome to the April edition of Community Connect. PCYC Queensland has had a very busy start to the year and I am delighted to share with you all some wonderful highlights so far. These include the expansion of our gymnastics footprint, with our new state-wide syllabus launched at 32 clubs. PCYC Braking the Cycle winning a prestigious Prince Michael International Road Safety Award, with the program now offered at 42 clubs across Queensland; and several new Emergency Services Cadets (ESC) locations opening. In other great news, I was especially proud to sign the official Deed of Agreement between PCYC Queensland and the Queensland Police Service, as well as a Statement of Commitment with the Department of Child Safety, Youth and Women. Both represent significant milestones in our 70 year history and in the future sustainability of our organisation moving forward. I would like to thank all our wonderful VIP supporters for your ongoing contributions to the PCYC Lottery. I am thrilled to see that PCYC Queensland members continue to be amongst the major prize winners each lottery. Your support really does makes a difference to the lives of young Queenslanders. Together we are building safer, healthier communities through youth development.

With your support we are changing the stories of young Queenslanders. Jesse had an incredibly difficult childhood, experiencing domestic violence and bullying throughout his life. He was filled with anger, struggled in school and had no real direction or confidence. He disengaged from everyday life and was at risk of following a negative and destructive lifestyle, with very damaging outcomes. But everything changed when Jesse was referred to PCYC Queensland. He began visiting his local PCYC club for support, mentorship and encouragement to make more positive life choices. With assistance and guidance, Jesse had the courage to participate in sporting activities and programs and was able to gain more balance in his life, set personal goals and build hope for a positive future. We are excited to share that Jesse has now finished his high school education and is participating in the PCYC Braking the Cycle learner driver mentor program to get his licence. He also put his new-found confidence into play and recently landed his dream job as a landscape gardener! Today, Jesse is calm, can easily talk to people and is a much more positive person. He credits his changed story to PCYC Queensland’s staff, volunteers and serving police officers. Jesse has shared his story to let you know how your support makes a difference. Your generosity allows PCYC Queensland to continue to change the stories of young people and provide them with skills and confidence to help them obtain employment and become positive role models.

Jo-Nesha’s journey from PCYC Cairns to the Australian Institute of Sport! Since 2017, we have been following Jo-Nesha’s story, and after such a positive response, we wanted to give you an update on her journey. Jo-Nesha began her PCYC Queensland story participating in our sports programs. After her leadership potential was recognised, she participated in two of our Leadership and Development programs - Participate, Lead, Champion (PLC) program and Level 1 of the State Youth Leadership Program (SYLP) and completed her Bronze Duke of Edinburgh International Award. Jo-Nesha’s experiences with PCYC Queensland had a lasting effect and she continues to have the confidence to encourage peer involvement and have a positive impact on members of her local Cairns community. One of her goals was to represent Australia at the 2020 Olympics for sprinting and excitingly, this year she gained a part-scholarship to Canberra Girls Grammar to attend the Australian Institute of Sport. Jo-Nesha has also been accepted into the Raise the Bar program, a joint initiative between Athletics Australia and Melbourne University Sport, that provides Indigenous school students the chance to discover pathways to studying and participation through high performance sport. Congratulations Jo-Nesha, we wish you lots of luck for the future!
A very deserving PCYC Lottery Winner! We recently caught up with Ken, the lucky first prize winner of PCYC Lottery 68, winning a Mitsubishi Pajero Sport! Ken has supported PCYC Queensland via the PCYC Lottery for over six years having been inspired by the work and positive impact PCYC Queensland has on young Queenslanders. Ken is a very active member in his community, with a passion for youth development and fundraising. After supporting community fundraising initiatives for over 30 years, this is the first prize Ken has ever won and he was incredibly grateful. Congratulations and thank you, Ken!

PCYC Braking the Cycle expands to Caboolture and Deception Bay PCYC Queensland’s international award-winning, learner driver mentor program, PCYC Braking the Cycle (BTC), was officially launched at PCYC Caboolture and PCYC Deception Bay by State Member for Morayfield, Mark Ryan. PCYC BTC is our volunteer driver mentor program designed to support learner drivers without access to a supervisor or registered vehicle to complete their logbook hours. Participants are matched with a specific volunteer from our 700 strong driver mentor network. Mentors provide encouragement and help young people improve their self-esteem and develop positive road safety attitudes. Since 2013, PCYC BTC has helped over 1,350 young people obtain their driver’s licence, built up a fleet of over 50 vehicles and has had support from over 50 government, community and corporate partners. The program has been awarded 13 State and National Road Safety Awards and received a prestigious Prince Michael International Road Safety Award in December 2018. Thanks to the support of the Motor Accident Insurance Commission (MAIC) and the Department of Transport and Main Roads the program is now offered at 42 clubs across the state. PCYC Queensland CEO, Phil Schultz, said “the program not only empowers disadvantaged young people to obtain their licence, but also increases a young person’s employment and education opportunities, encourages positive community connection and improves road safety outcomes for young drivers”.
