Changing stories through opportunity As I reflect upon a wonderful year of achievements, I am reminded of the fundamental role that our clubs play and the impact PCYC Queensland has on young people’s lives and in local communities. We help people get involved in a wide range of sports and activities, give them the opportunity to connect with mentors and community leaders and help provide lifelong skills. Our 55 clubs offer safe spaces for young people and the community to engage, be connected and be active in every stage of life. We also engage with the community through more than 50 programs, 38 Gym+Fitness centres and 32 gymnastics locations.

Equality is important to PCYC Queensland and this year more than 34,000 women and girls gained access to sport and recreation activities in a welcoming and supportive environment by joining one of our programs, clubs or fitness centres.

Our signature sports of boxing, gymnastics, martial arts and dance welcome beginners through to elite athletes competing on the world stage, and we congratulate our sports champions across the state. Our delivery of the government’s Indigenous Community Sport and Recreation Program continues to achieve positive outcomes across 35 Indigenous communities. We also give young people a better start through our activities, KinderGym program and our 113 outside school hours care services.

Through our programs and services young people have greater opportunities to make better choices and change their story. Our clubs exist largely in low socioeconomic areas from the Torres Strait Islands to the Gold Coast and provide an important source of employment, volunteer and Skilling Queenslanders for Work programs in some of the state’s most rural and remote communities.

Our youth development programs continue to motivate and inspire. Not only does the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award and our flagship State Youth Leadership Program create leaders, this year our learner driver mentor program Braking the Cycle achieved international acclaim, winning a prestigious Prince Michael International Road Safety Award. Our youth development programs not only help young people to recognise and achieve their leadership potential, they help them achieve in school, at work and in life.

Our personal development programs such as Deep Blue Line, Project Booyah and the Safe Communities Program support crime prevention through meaningful engagement and early intervention. These programs use police-led mentoring to reduce barriers between police, young people and communities, and ultimately improve community safety.

This year we commemorate the Deed of Agreement with the Queensland Police Service, a key milestone in our 70-year history. Other notable achievements include a Statement of Commitment with the Queensland Government, and community partnership with the Western Cape Communities Trust to deliver services to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community of Napranum.

While we celebrate many achievements this year, we also recognise the devastating impact of the Townsville floods in February 2019 that caused significant damage to all our North Queensland clubs. This event had and continues to have an enormous impact on the region. I am endlessly proud of our staff and volunteers for showing their dedication and commitment to the community during these tough times.

As we embark on a new year and the beginning of our 2019-2022 Strategic Plan, we remain committed to our vision of building safer, healthier communities through youth development. The more youth development programs we create, the more we can increase our impact on crime prevention. These programs also ensure we continue to enhance our communities by encouraging participation and help to establish the leaders of tomorrow.

Heading One Chair welcome It has been a spectacular year full of celebrations and achievements. As I witness the energy of the volunteers and all our staff, I am continually impressed by their dedication and tireless efforts to encourage our organisation and our members to go from strength to strength.

I know that many of you, like me, are moved by our members’ stories, such as the young man who couldn’t get a job because he couldn’t get his licence, but now has both because of you. Or the young girl who should have been crushed by the abuse she experienced, but who has grown into a confident and positive young woman because of programs supported by you. And the young boy who was firmly headed down the wrong path and had only seen police as an adversary, and who now sees them as positive mentors that he can draw strength from.

Changing our young people’s stories is possible because of your support. So, when life gets tough, as it did for our Townsville region colleagues and community members during the floods, draw strength from these stories as I do.

Always remember that you are part of a big PCYC Queensland family spread across the entire state. We operate in predominantly the lowest socio-economic areas of Queensland because that is where we are needed, and our clubs provide safe hubs for our members to connect. Reach out to your extended club family, get to know them, swap ideas and resources and draw on their experiences for the benefit of your local community.

The not-for-profit sector in Australia is going through a tumultuous period, with growing complexities across governing legislation, regulations, and competition for charitable giving. In the face of this, PCYC Queensland remains committed to addressing community need, positively impacting young people’s lives and encouraging social cohesion. Without support from PCYC Queensland, many of our members’ stories would be quite different but we recognise our work is far from done and more support is needed.

One of our biggest challenges is building the awareness of all that PCYC Queensland does to build safer, healthier communities through youth development, and our valuable clubs and programs. I frequently hear the comment, ‘I was not aware of all that PCYC delivers!’.

We need to ensure partners, sponsors and government departments understand our full potential and our critical impact in young people’s lives and local communities.

I encourage you all to share our stories to turn this awareness around, so we can continue to do more.

May I say how incredibly grateful I am to our departing President, Commissioner Ian Stewart for his guidance over several years. I am eager for the year ahead, and I look forward to continuing the long positive working relationship we have had with Commissioner Katarina Carroll, who will now take on the role as President of PCYC Queensland. Commissioner Carroll has been an advocate for PCYC Queensland for many years most recently through the Emergency Services Cadets program and we welcome her in her new role.

Who we are PCYC Queensland is a leading charity providing youth and community programs, services and facilities. Our staff and volunteers have been working alongside the Queensland Police Service to meet community and youth needs across Queensland since 1948.

Our PCYC Queensland story Through our 55 clubs, we support 68,000 members and play a vital role in more than 50,000 young people’s lives each year from the Torres Strait to the Gold Coast and beyond, many of whom are at risk, disadvantaged or disengaged.

Almost 90% of our work is funded through kind donations and our fee-for-services, and the remaining 10% is through government funding and significant in-kind support from our QPS partners.

PCYC Queensland is committed to addressing whole of community needs, positively impacting young people’s lives and encouraging social cohesion through inclusive programs. Our youth development, crime prevention and community engagement programs underpin all that we do. Our clubs provide a safe place for our members, and our work is predominantly in the lowest socioeconomic areas of Queensland through employment, skill development programs and opportunities to improve health and wellbeing.

Acknowledging our supporters PCYC Queensland is supported by the generosity of our members, donors, workplace givers, corporate partners and sponsors, and those who support us through fundraising and events.

Almost 90% of our work is funded through kind donations and our fee-for-services, programs and community events, and the remaining 10% is from various levels of government.

We value our many ongoing supporters of the PCYC Lottery, and this year we also joined Play for Purpose, the online sports and charity raffle that saw a PCYC Queensland member win $500,000 in gold bullion in the inaugural draw!

Ken’s story “Having been a community-based bus driver for 37 years, and then a disability bus driver for a further seven, I am passionate about youth development. I am a very active community member and have been a Scout Leader for years, and I am always keen to support fundraising initiatives that help young people in the community.

I first donated to the PCYC Lottery due to my affiliation with Scouts, as I was always keen to help young people and their leadership development. I bought my first PCYC Lottery ticket almost six years ago and I continue to support the lottery every month. This year I was absolutely astounded when I found out I won a brand-new car!

I am inspired by the work that PCYC Queensland does, and the positive impact the organisation has on young people in their local communities, especially the ones that really need the extra support.”

Aimee’s story Acting Senior Constable Aimee Sewell was crowned winner of the 2019 Mount Isa Mines Rodeo ‘Queen Quest’, for raising an astounding $80,174 for PCYC Mount Isa. “As a former teacher, and now as a police officer, I am passionate about youth development. Being exposed to some of the traumas that some children have been through is heart-breaking, and it has reinforced my passion to protect the most vulnerable people in our communities.

When I moved from Brisbane to Mount Isa in 2015 I was surprised by how the police were so heavily woven into the community. Even when children had negative experiences with police in the past, whenever they saw us in the street, they would come over to say hello and give us a hug. Other female police officers before me had done amazing jobs running crime prevention and community engagement programs in the community and I was inspired to do more.

Through PCYC Mount Isa, I saw the incredible work the organisation was doing to support youth development. The Mount Isa Rodeo Queen Quest seemed like the perfect opportunity to raise the profile of PCYC Queensland and raise some money to support the young people in my community.

After inviting close friends to help me fundraise for the event, community support grew and turned into a team of 120 people who were dubbed ‘Aimee’s Army’.

It was an amazing to experience to have so many like‑minded people willing to share their time and energy to support the community, especially as most of the volunteers were professionals with their own families and commitments!

The community support was overwhelming and winning the Mount Isa Rodeo Queen Quest was the icing on the cake. I am so thrilled with the money raised and I hope it will have a lasting effect in the community.”

Celebrating our volunteers PCYC Queensland values our thousands of wonderful volunteers, whose dedication and passion help us to deliver our vision.

This year we reached more than 3,200 committed volunteers across the state, many of whom who have been volunteering with us for decades.

Margaret’s story “I joined PCYC Sandgate in 2008 with the Shorncliffe Pottery Club. Being a PCYC Queensland member and volunteer for the past 11 years has given me the opportunity to meet lots of people. I enjoy interacting with others and knowing that I am helping others in my community and this year I received a local ‘Deagon legend’ volunteer award, which I am extremely humbled by.

Being a volunteer allows me to help support a worthy cause. I would encourage anyone to get involved with their local PCYC Queensland club and to make the most of the advice, support and opportunities that come from joining a community charity.

I value my volunteering time overseeing the Pottery Club, being part of the team who run Rock Under the Clock and fundraising at community events. I look forward to increasing my involvement, and sincerely hope to stay active in these pursuits for years to come!”

Jono’s story “I have been a sports presenter and producer at Network 10 for more than a decade, and I am a self-confessed sports tragic. My love of sport started from an early age. Growing up on the Sunshine Coast, I was a keen surfer and rugby league player with a strong interest in rugby union, AFL, cricket, golf and martial arts. Now I get to follow my passions and live my dream job.

Being a Youth Ambassador for PCYC Queensland allows me to see first-hand the wonderful ways involvement in sports impacts individuals, families and communities, and the positive role sports and mentors play. Having two young children myself, I am passionate about getting kids active and engaged, and was surprised at just how many sports and activities PCYC Queensland clubs have to offer. They also run fun family events like PCYC embRACE that my family and I all participate in, providing a great way for the community to connect and get involved.

PCYC Queensland embodies sport for positive choice and I am only too happy to share their message and impact in the wider community.”

Working together in the community This year marks the historic signing of the Deed of Agreement between PCYC Queensland and the Queensland Police Service (QPS).

The Deed is a significant milestone, formally recognising our 70-year history working together in the community to meet youth and community needs. It marks an important junction in our history and the future journey of PCYC Queensland and celebrates our unique joint initiative that enables us to deliver programs to support young Queenslanders to make positive choices and be more connected to their community.

PCYC Queensland Legacy Club Membership PCYC Queensland, in conjunction with Minister for Police and Minister for Corrective Services, the Hon Mark Ryan this year launched our special Legacy Club Membership for families who have sadly lost a loved one in the line of duty.

The membership encompasses all Queensland emergency service providers and their referral agencies and provides families with support to access our programs, activities and outside school hours care services.

In our communities Our programs and activities are unique to each community’s needs, but all provide greater opportunities and pathways to help young people make positive choices and choose alternative futures.

PCYC Queensland is helping to change young Queenslanders’ stories through employment, skill development programs and opportunities to improve health and wellbeing, with the support of mentors and community leaders including our serving police officers.

Far North Queensland Highlights PCYC Cairns saw 80 enrolments in Braking the Cycle this year, supporting 15 young people to achieve their licence.

PCYC Cloncurry’s Youth Management Team (YMT) took part in a Leadership Camp travelling from Cloncurry to Cairns with 11 members attending to develop their leadership and life skills.

PCYC Cooktown received a car for Braking the Cycle, generously donated by the Cooktown Bowls Club. In May 2019 they hosted their first ‘Breakfast of Champions’ with 40 participants representing 20 organisations coming together to work collaboratively to discuss youth and community needs.

PCYC Mareeba’s Ready for Work program saw great outcomes, assisting more than half of their 39 participants to obtain employment or commence further study after completing the program. The club also received a car for Braking the Cycle with support from Mareeba Rotary.

PCYC Napranum opened in May 2019 as the organisation’s first community-funded club with the support of The Western Cape Communities Trust.

Zach’s story “The day my life changed with PCYC Queensland was when I volunteered to be a support person for a young family member who had been in trouble with the police. After the meeting, I was yarning with the Restorative Justice representative about wanting to change my life and she told me about PCYC Mareeba’s Ready for Work Program.

I attended and completed the Ready for Work course and at that same time I applied for a position at the Queensland Indigenous Youth Leadership Program being held at Queensland Parliament. Following the skills and knowledge I gained from the program, I also applied for the Youth Support Worker position that opened at the club and couldn’t believe it when I got the job! Soon after I was also accepted to attend the Queensland Indigenous Youth Leadership Program which was an amazing and humbling experience.

I have started to achieve my career goals being in a job where I can support the Indigenous youth of my community, and in my role as a Youth Support Officer where I have been invited to attend Restorative Justice Conferences as an Indigenous Cultural Representative. This opportunity has put a spark within me to support as many Indigenous youths to succeed in life and most importantly to create more Indigenous leaders in our communities.

I couldn’t be more grateful for my PCYC Queensland journey and all the opportunities the organisation has given me.”

North Queensland Highlights PCYC Bowen’s redeveloped skating rink has been welcomed by the community and now more than 100 young people enjoy this activity every Friday night.

PCYC Burdekin’s celebrated female boxer Emma Lawson was selected as a member of the Australian Youth Olympic Team and she secured herself the title of fourth best junior boxer in the world after competing in the Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires.

PCYC Charters Towers held their first ever Christmas Pageant in December 2018 which was greatly supported by the community and Youth Management Team (YMT) member Makayla was awarded Young Citizen of the Year.

PCYC Innisfail’s pop up programs using the Blue Light Trailer have been run in local parks with great community involvement.

PCYC Palm Island held its first colour run as part of NAIDOC Week 2018, with more than 40 children taking part in the fun-filled event.

The natural disaster that hit North Queensland in February 2019 impacted our three Townsville clubs. PCYC Queensland staff, volunteers and members showed their dedication and commitment to the community and worked tirelessly together during this crisis.

Makayla’s story “My PCYC Queensland journey started in 2014 when I joined the YMT. Throughout my time with PCYC Queensland I have had the opportunity to be an active member of my community and I enjoy working alongside my fellow members and other local organisations on initiatives to positively engage with young people from my community. I love being a role model and mentor.

PCYC Queensland has given me the opportunity to attend a youth forum in Brisbane where I represented Charters Towers and rural youth. I was also recognised by winning the ‘Young Citizen of the Year’ Australia Day Award, and was recently selected to co‑chair a Youth Advisory Group.

I believe that my involvement with PCYC Queensland and the mentoring and encouragement I received has helped me to be where I am today. I have achieved some incredible outcomes and I am very grateful for the support and the confidence I have built in myself. I am looking forward to where my PCYC Queensland journey will lead me in the future and would highly recommend any young person looking to get involved in their community to head to their local PCYC.”

Central Queensland Highlights PCYC Biloela was awarded a $10,000 grant from the Commonwealth Bank in recognition of the inspiring and far reaching impact of their programs and services in the local community.

PCYC Bundaberg’s annual charity ball was a huge success and their gymnastics program has now reached more than 500 members.

PCYC Caboolture and PCYC Deception Bay celebrated the launch of Braking the Cycle. PCYC Deception Bay also launched their 24/7 gym with great success.

PCYC Gladstone was presented with a $20,000 cheque following the Gladstone Botanic to Bridge fun run and the donation went towards creating a youth space drop‑in lounge.

PCYC Hervey Bay’s Fight Night was a must-do on the boxing calendar, raising thousands for the club.

PCYC Redcliffe celebrated the official opening of the club redevelopment in March 2019, boasting a large multipurpose sports arena with enclosed access between buildings.

PCYC Rockhampton celebrated the launch of gymnastics at the club which welcomed more than 100 members in the first term.

PCYC Sunshine Coast’s gymnastics has also expanded this year, with Free G parkour the most popular program.

Harrison’s story “I have been trampolining since I was eight years old.

I loved being out on the trampoline and was teaching myself tricks. My mum wanted me to learn properly and do it in a safe environment so I started with PCYC Redcliffe with Lyn Gilroy as my coach.

Now, six years later, I train with Lyn four days a week, which includes morning training starting at 7am. I do a run each morning and ride to and from school most days to maintain my fitness. Making sure I get enough sleep, good nutrition and stretching are also vital to my training routine.

Lyn is a great coach and I am lucky to train under her guidance, especially as PCYC Redcliffe was ranked the 7th top trampoline club in Australia at the 2019 National Club Championships.

Being selected for the 2019 Queensland Team Future program and the 2019 Australian Junior Training Squad on top of winning gold and silver at the State Age Championships have been massive highlights for me this year. My ultimate goals are to compete at the World Age Championships this year, the Junior Olympics and Olympic Games.”

South West Queensland Highlights PCYC Beenleigh received over $180,000 from the Queensland Government and Logan City Council to upgrade their gymnastics facility and equipment.

PCYC Bayside’s Bike Safety Program was delivered to over 700 school students across six schools on bike education and training, with more than 500 new helmets fitted.

PCYC Carindale’s Youth Shed Mentoring program saw great outcomes for the young men involved who built positive relationships with community leaders and mentors.

PCYC Crestmead’s youth team implemented a street art program for disengaged young students from Shailer Park State High School that resulted in positive engagement.

PCYC Logan’s Youth Development Officer Codie Smith won a Logan City Council ‘Safe City Award’ for her hard work and dedication in running community programs.

The club also received a generous renovation by Fallon Solutions.

PCYC Toowoomba and PCYC South Burnett’s success running Restart in partnership with Education Queensland has seen the program expand to PCYC Cairns and PCYC Mareeba.

Helen’s story “Attending Rise Up, Be Yourself (RUBY) forced me to confront my fear of people knowing the truth about what happened to me. It also helped me to realise that I am not the only person this happened to.

PCYC Dalby won both the Judges’ Choice and Business of the Year Awards at the Dalby Chamber of Commerce and Industry Business Excellence Awards in October 2018 and celebrated five years of delivering Braking the Cycle with support from Arrow Energy, helping 150 participants secure their licences.

Most importantly, the RUBY program is tangible evidence to me that the wider community care. I may never meet the person who dreamed up the concept but I know that person valued people who have survived domestic violence.

PCYC Ipswich commenced Rise Up, Be Yourself (RUBY), which helped dozens of young women suffering from domestic and family violence.

RUBY is not just an exercise program, but an expression of the community’s support and a hope for better things. Thank you to all who are a part of lending hope in a time of need.” *name changed to protect identity

South East Queensland Highlights PCYC Ashmore RUBY had 14 regular participants.

All those involved improved their physical health, fitness and confidence and two participants gained full time employment.

PCYC Hills District judo club member Anneliese Fielder was selected to represent Australia at the Oceania Championships in New Caledonia.

PCYC Lang Park’s boxing fundraiser was a great night with over 130 people attending to watch 11 sparring bouts. The club’s under 11 boys basketball team won the State Club Championships in July and many were selected to join the Basketball Queensland Future Development Program.

Now in its sixth year, PCYC Redlands’ Girls Excel program is empowering young women to change their outlook on life, focus on healthy relationships, build selfconfidence and have the courage to face fears. This year the program helped 20 young girls aged 12‑15.

PCYC Sandgate gymnasts excelled at the State Championships and two gymnasts were selected for Nationals.

PCYC Pine Rivers main sports hall underwent a $1m redevelopment and was also granted over $86,000 to develop a purpose-built gymnastics facility.

Paula’s story “Eleven years ago I was extremely unfit, very overweight, severely depressed and had numerous health issues. I had socially isolated myself and was very introverted. I made the decision to change my life and join my local PCYC Queensland gym. One morning my trainer invited me to join the over 50s fitness Matured and Determined Seniors (MADS) group and I enjoyed it so much I became a permanent member. Within a short time I was joining the group after the classes for coffee. I didn’t expect the social benefits of going to a gym!

Years later and now in my seventies I continue to train regularly. My weight is in a healthy range, I am much fitter, my mobility has improved, and my depression is long gone. I am now much more outgoing and have made lifelong friends.

The trainers are caring, respectful and always encouraging. It is a happy, safe environment for seniors who might feel threatened going alone as there is no judgement or competitiveness. You can come along and start at your own pace and you will be surprised how quickly your life changes, because mine certainly did!”

Giving young people a better start PCYC Queensland offers opportunities for all young Queenslanders to get a better start through early activities such as KinderGym, dance and martial arts, programs such as Bicycle Safety and Restart and through our outside school hours care services as one of Queensland’s largest providers.

Bicycle Safety Our popular PCYC Bicycle Safety program provides education for young people on vital road safety rules to improve road awareness, encourage safe bicycle riding and reinforce the importance of wearing helmets. Delivered in clubs and schools by police officers, the program equips young primary school students with awareness and skills to improve general road safety and encourage health and fitness.

Outside School Hours Care

PCYC Queensland is one of the state’s largest providers of Outside School Hours Care (OSHC) with 113 service locations. We provide care to more than 25,000 children through our 85 school-based and 28 club-based services, our before and after school and our vacation care services. Our OSHC services are uniquely tailored to each local community. We provide diverse, quality leisure-based experiences supported by a centralised model.

KinderGym classes are structured sessions that introduce basic skills and strength building activities, where interaction between you and your child is a key developmental component.

PCYC Queensland values the importance of play in childhood and we are committed to providing programs that assist young people to reach their potential and make positive life choices. Our OSHC programs focus on the social, emotional and physical development of young children to ensure the learning outcomes are consistent with the Australian Government’s ‘My Time, Our Place’ framework for the young people in our care.

Our program is designed to develop children’s social, emotional, cognitive and physical abilities and adopts the Gymnastics Australia KinderGym guiding principles.

Classes are conducted by qualified and accredited coaches and encourage children to build motor skills, coordination, social skills and confidence.

This year a centralised OSHC Service Management Team has been implemented to provide consistency and support to all our services. A new electronic sign-in/signout system, online enrolment and booking system has also been installed at all services to better support our families’ needs.

Michelle’s story “I have held a number of roles throughout my 20-year career working with school age children, including OSHC Service Coordinator, Project Manager for Queensland Children’s Activities Network developing industry resources and facilitating training and also as a trainer working with childcare students.

I joined the PCYC Queensland OSHC team in 2016 and was appointed as the OSHC State Educational Leader this year. This role involves training and upskilling hundreds of educators across the state as well as providing specialist advice and support around professional practices to increase the quality of care for children attending our services.

Building safer communities through crime prevention PCYC Queensland’s personal development programs support crime prevention through positive engagement and early intervention. Yousuf’s story Yousuf was referred to his local PCYC Queensland club as a Rohingya refugee to help him assimilate into Australian culture and community. Yousuf is an active member of his community and has taken part in Deep Blue Line program.

“Our (Rohingya) people have been suffering for a very long time now. My dad got arrested (overseas) by the police for no reason. They just came in the middle of the night... then they banged the door, broke the door.

In 2010 we arrived in Australia. Even at the airport if I saw a police officer, I would shake. So basically, when I got involved in the Deep Blue Line program it was a whole lot of new experiences for me. Just talking to police officers, meeting new friends, meeting new people, going out to the police academy, talking to the cadets - I have gained a lot of confidence and yeah, I think I have benefitted a lot from that program. To get involved with PCYC Queensland means a lot.”

Jacob’s story Jacob is one of more than 1,000 students who have successfully completed our positive intervention program, PCYC Restart.

“PCYC Restart was good, it helped me. It made me feel like I could step up in life because I realised acting the way I was wouldn’t help me in the future to get an education and for when I go to high school.

Everything improved after I attended Restart. It helped me understand my teacher and the staff helped me understand what it is like for my teachers when we don’t behave. I’ve realised now my teacher is trying to do more for me. It has helped me at home too. Instead of being grumpy, I’ve been happy.”

Jacob’s mum Charleena agrees that Restart was incredibly positive.

“Before the program Jacob was being very defiant, very negative, hating on everyone. He used to blame everyone and didn’t take ownership of what he was doing. Since the program we are not getting the severe outbursts, no meltdowns, no trashing of his room or threatening to hurt himself – now we just get the normal teenage attitudes!

We hope he can continue to make positive choices so that he can keep attending the holiday programs.

The PCYC Queensland staff there are wonderful, and they have the time to work one on one with the kids and they are really easy to talk to.”

Gwenneth’s story Police Liaison Officer Gwenneth Yeatman is helping young people in the Yarrabah community through art and the Safer Communities ‘Paint for Pride’ program.

Safer Communities The Safer Communities program deploys crime prevention and community engagement programs across 13 high priority Queensland communities from Mornington Island and Aurukun, to Logan, Inala and Toowoomba and is delivered in partnership with the Australian Government.

“I am passionate about art and wanted to use this activity to help kids in the Yarrabah community.

Working in partnership with the council, businesses and local high schools, we do murals with messages from the kids that the whole community can see.

It is about giving the children a voice through art.

The messages are about values, respect, pride and sustainability.

The concept is to keep kids engaged. During their time in the project, we create a yarning circle and talk about what their future looks like without education. When they design their mural I encourage them to write a simple message. Their first attempt was the boomerang on the front of the PCYC Yarrabah club, with nearly 30 kids aged 11-years-old and upwards having a go.

I see disengaged kids on the street and I ask them what they’re doing, if they like art and if they’re interested in jumping on the Paint for Pride crew. It is about engaging them in an educational activity, giving them a voice and reminding them how proud they should be. It’s all about building their selfesteem and giving the community pride as well and that’s just why it’s called Paint for Pride.”

Shaping leaders of tomorrow through youth development Our youth development programs and activities develop, support, challenge and inspire young people to recognise and achieve their leadership potential.

Some of our most notable programs include our flagship State Youth Leadership Program (SYLP), the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award, Emergency Services Cadets, Braking the Cycle and our training program Ready for Work also prepares young people to become ready for employment.

Emergency Services Cadets Our Emergency Services Cadets (ESC) program is now offered at 18 locations across Queensland and is delivered in partnership with Queensland Fire and Emergency Services. ESC is offered to young people aged 12-17, who under the leadership and guidance of volunteer adult leaders and mentoring emergency services personnel, learn a range of emergency service skills and develop their leadership potential.

Skye B’s story “I started as a Cadet in 2016, and eventually worked my way up to a Cadet Unit Leader. I loved being part of the Cadets, learning emergency service skills, building my leadership skills and growing under the guidance of passionate adult Cadet Leaders and other mentors. The program really supports young people to find and reach their potential. I think being part of the Cadets also really helped me focus and strive at school. I was school Vice-Captain and achieved good grades and held down a part-time job as well.

As an aspiring firefighter, the Emergency Services Cadets gave me the opportunity to represent Queensland at the Australian Fire Cadet Championships where my team achieved 18th place. I was also able to attend ESCape Week and I received the Women and Firefighting Australasia (WAFA) Youth Leadership Award in late 2018, which was a real highlight for me.

I strongly recommend to anyone who is looking to join the Emergency Services Cadets to go ahead and sign up! Being a Cadet has positively impacted my life, you gain and learn so much, like great leadership skills, respect for yourself and others, integrity and confidence.

Heading One

Skye D’s story As a valued Youth Management Team (YMT) member and mentor to other young people, Skye has completed Levels 1, 2 and 3 of our State Youth Leadership Program.

State Youth Leadership Program SYLP is our multi-stage experiential based learning program designed to develop young people into leaders. The six-day, five-night program is held at PCYC Bornhoffen Leadership Development Centre in the Gold Coast Hinterland and is by referral and invitation only.

It is aimed at young people aged between 14-25 and encourages them to step out of their comfort zone to challenge themselves and develop skills that are useful in school, community, work and life.

“After becoming a PCYC Queensland member in 2017, I was soon invited to become a part of the YMT at my club which I love. I felt so privileged when I was nominated for SYLP 1 and was proud to go onto complete SYLP 2 and SYLP 3 in 2018.

The program really challenged me and pushed me outside my comfort zone, but I really developed my leadership skills and my confidence.

I have always valued being a YMT member and enjoy encouraging other young members to get involved. After completing SYLP 3 I had the powerful realisation of what it means to be female and a leader, and I am incredibly grateful to PCYC Queensland for giving me the opportunity to develop myself. I have learnt so much from my mentors and coaches and I totally believe my SYLP experiences helped me to become a camp counselor in the US summer camp where I recently worked. Now I am excited to come back and attend SYLP 1 as a Youth Coach to mentor other young people.”

Zeke’s story Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award As the largest Award Centre in Queensland delivering the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award, PCYC Queensland is incredibly proud of our long history delivering the program that supports young people on their journey to a better future.

The Award is available to young people aged 14-24 and encourages them to set their own goals and challenges, work towards achieving them and be recognised for sustaining the commitment they have made. All participants complete four sections at each level of the Award (Bronze, Silver and Gold) that encompass service, skill, physical recreation and an adventurous journey.

Overland Track – Adventurous Journey This year’s adventurous journey involved nine participants from all over the state travelling to Tasmania to complete the Overland Track. With temperatures as low as minus 5 degrees, the young people traversed 65km across the Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park within the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area, working together as a team to complete the challenge.

Gold Awardees PCYC Queensland is proud of our 13 members who were all Gold Awardees at The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award presentation in Brisbane in September 2018. Achieving a Gold Award requires a minimum 12-month commitment and we are proud of each young member’s skills and determination!

Experiencing trouble at school and at home Zeke first came to PCYC Queensland through the Streetwise program. With help to change his story, Zeke has recently achieved his Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.

“In 2016 I started the PCYC Streetwise program as I was having some problems at school. Through the support of the PCYC Queensland program and staff, I improved my selfmanagement and confidence to make positive decisions.

The program really matured me and taught me about risks, consequences and responsibility.

Because my attitude and engagement at school changed so much, I was referred to undertake the Bronze Duke of Edinburgh’s Award through my club. I was so grateful for the opportunity and it motivated me to improve all areas of my life.

By 15, I had begun the Silver level of the Award and was recommended for SYLP to hone my leadership skills, self-awareness and emotional intelligence.

This year I was so honoured to be awarded a Gold Award through Duke of Ed, and to also meet the Honourable Paul de Jersey, Governor of Queensland, to receive my certificate at Brisbane City Hall.

Being connected to PCYC Queensland has opened so many doors for me. I became School Art Captain in Year 12, I obtained my licence through Braking the Cycle, I finished high school and am about to commence studying at the Australian Performing Arts Conservatorium.

I believe that PCYC Queensland is a place that allows young people to develop into who they need to be.”

Braking the Cycle Braking the Cycle is our renowned volunteer learner driver mentor program designed to support learner drivers to complete their 100 hours of supervised driving.

The aim of the program is to provide young people with increased employment opportunities, community connection and driver education. The program is now offered at 42 clubs across Queensland.

Tyrone’s story Tyrone came from a tough background and is one of nine children in his family. He did not attend mainstream school and had no literacy or numeracy skills when he was referred to PCYC Queensland at age 16.

“When I started school, I was completely illiterate and innumerate. Commencing at a physical school was a shock! It took me a while to figure out how to be social.

At first I didn’t know what PCYC Queensland was.

But before I knew it, I was learning to drive, and I was being supported through my TAFE course.

I was terrified of driving before doing Braking the Cycle. I wouldn’t have even been able to pass the test to actually get my Ls. Without PCYC Queensland, I wouldn’t be able to drive or write properly.

I owe a lot to PCYC Queensland. They have given me endless support and helped me to get to where I am today.”

In December 2018 PCYC Queensland received a prestigious Prince Michael International Road Safety Award for outstanding contribution to improving road safety. The program was acknowledged for improving the safety record of disadvantaged young people and for addressing the important area of social inclusion. Both PCYC Queensland Chairman Garry Humphries, and Chief Executive Officer Phil Schultz attended the award ceremony with Prince Michael in London.

Indigenous Programs “By Community, For Community” PCYC Queensland works closely with local Indigenous communities to deliver programs in metropolitan, regional and remote locations across Queensland.

Community engagement Traditional games and events play a significant part in all our Indigenous programs, and showcase events including Bunburra and Deadly 3s continue to create opportunities and build capacity for individuals and teams to establish similar activities within their local communities and regions.

Bunburra Bunburra brought together over 160 young people from 22 Indigenous communities to participate in our showcase Indigenous Beach Football Tournament in August 2018 at Surfers Paradise Beach on the Gold Coast as part of the Sport & Culture Corroboree.

The program fosters sporting skills and leadership qualities, empowering young people to strive for sporting success by providing a modern-day event for young Indigenous people from all around Queensland to meet in a context that supports pride, identity and achievement.

Thanks to event ambassador Petero Civoniceva for being such a positive influence, and to the Yugambeh Choir, Luther Cora and the Yugambeh Dancers and Ethan Bulabula Yag for their wonderful performances.

Deadly 3s The annual Deadly 3s Basketball Tournament was held in November 2018 at PCYC Edmonton. It is still the only major basketball tournament of its kind in Far North Queensland and this year was officially endorsed by the International Basketball Association (FIBA). Over 160 players from 22 Indigenous communities travelled from Mackay, Mornington Island and the north of Cape York for the annual tournament.

The three-on-three basketball tournaments for adults offers ongoing benefits for participants and communities as the journey results in competitors sharing their experiences and knowledge to organise smaller community competitions.

Catch Me If You Can Catch Me If You Can is an innovative program that uses sports to develop and improve relationships between Indigenous school students and local police. Students are matched with a police officer of their choice and participate in team building activities and a friendly sporting competition. The program uses sport and mentoring as the foundation to build meaningful and sustainable relationships.

Marc’s story “These young people are at school but there is the possibility they could drop out and that’s what we don’t want. The school identifies the students they think are on the brink of either being suspended or expelled, or just dropping out of school completely.

This program aims to encourage high attendance.

After participating in Catch Me If You Can, students’ confidence levels are boosted through the roof.

School attendance goes up to the school standard and general behaviour in class and respect levels go up around the community outside of the school hours.

PCYC Queensland has enabled me to share my personal story and experiences with young people, which in turn provides a positive outlook in the young people I connect with.”

3x3 Hustle This year PCYC Queensland launched an official partnership with the National Basketball League (NBL) to deliver the 3x3 Street Hustle competition across Queensland.

The premier NBL event endorsed by the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) provides a pathway for young Indigenous basketballers to progress from the suburbs to competing on the world stage.

Cape/Gulf Hustle Basketball Tour This year, PCYC Queensland, in partnership with the NBL and supported by Australian Indigenous Basketball (AIB), also delivered a 3x3 Street Hustle Tour of Indigenous communities across the Cape York Peninsula, stopping at Yallambie, Doomadgee, Mornington Island and Normanton. The tour saw 1,186 players come together to participate in the AIB clinics, followed by a 3x3 Hustle tournament. Thank you to all the communities for supporting this great event especially Sunset State School, Doomadgee State School and Mornington Island State School.

This historical tour marked the first time ever a brand-new sporting product has been made available to Indigenous communities first in Queensland before being made accessible to the general public.

Boxing As our foundation sport offering, boxing remains PCYC Queensland’s most popular sport.

PCYC Queensland celebrated Youth Ambassadors Jeff Horn and Liam Wilson, who were both winners at the River City Rumble at Suncorp Stadium on Friday, 30 November 2018. Jeff Horn’s stunning 96-second knock out ended Anthony Mundine’s career. In the main undercard fight PCYC Pine Rivers boxer Liam Wilson also delivered a stunning performance to win the Australian super-featherweight title.

We are also celebrating several other boxer’s achievements from around the state this year including PCYC Rockhampton’s Coby Campbell, PCYC Hervey Bay’s Zac Lovekin, PCYC Burdekin’s Damon Pitcher and PCYC Inala’s Deahna “Deedee” Hobbs just to name a few.

Aaliya’s story Aaliyah, 14, has been part of PCYC Bundaberg’s boxing program since it started in November 2018. It was developed to break down barriers between police and Indigenous youth and reduce crime, all while contributing to a healthy lifestyle through boxing.

“I’ve been part of the boxing program since it started I really enjoy training a few times a week with the crew. I’ve made some really good friends and I’ve also changed my attitude towards police officers. When I was younger I was a bit afraid of the police but doing this program has helped me overcome that fear. Malachi my coach is also a great trainer and mentor, and as an Indigenous person he teaches us the three principles of our cultural lore: share, care and respect, and about boxing especially discipline, respect and humility.

I enjoy making friends and going to different places and have been to a few tournaments now. I lost my first few fights then I got my first win in Hervey Bay and I went to State Novice Titles where I won both of my titles, which was awesome. Being part of the club has really changed my life and given me the chance to succeed, and I hope I can inspire other young Indigenous girls to know they can succeed with the right support too.”

Gymnastics PCYC Queensland launched our state-wide gymnastics syllabus in January 2019, offering a lifelong pathway to experience gymnastics at any age and any level from KinderGym through to gym sports and performance gymnastics.

With over 9,000 gymnasts across our 32 gymnastics clubs, PCYC Queensland is proud to be Gymnastics Queensland’s largest provider in the state. We provide enjoyable and inclusive opportunities tailored to those wanting to have fun as well as serious competitors looking to compete at an elite level.

PCYC Queensland’s 38 gyms across the state offer more than just a great way to get fit to enjoy a healthier and more active lifestyle. They are gyms with a difference which create offering affordable and inclusive community hubs that encourage a sense of belonging and allow members to give back to their community.

Our ever growing 50+ fitness classes such as Fitter for Life, Zumba Gold and group classes offer supportive and friendly environments for seniors to improve mobility, muscular conditioning and strength. The classes also provide a great opportunity for social interaction and building lasting friendships.

Our qualified fitness professionals inspire members who are working out for the first time, through to those pushing themselves to the next level through group classes, personal training, over 50s fitness and more.

Heather’s story Heather became a member of PCYC Queensland through gymnastics. She is part of the a PCYC Queensland Rhythmic Gymnastics team and with the support of her club and coach she competes on the world stage.

“My mum is on a disability pension, and my dad is unemployed. He looks after my mum. And there is obviously a lot of stress and issues at home.

Currently I train around 25 hours a week.

Gymnastics can be a really tough sport. PCYC Queensland has created programs that allow for a lot of development and inclusion, so we have a lot of different people in the gym, which is great.

Most recently my group has been named in the national squad for 2018/19 so that gives us sanctioning to World Cups, World Challenges, and potentially World Championships which is really exciting. I think being with PCYC Queensland has given me strength.

They’ve always told me to just keep going and be strong, and that everything is going to work out... because they always help you.”

Empowering positive lifestyles through fitness Healthy Bodies Healthy Minds PCYC Queensland’s Healthy Bodies, Healthy Minds program is a community-based recovery program that addresses the physical and emotional wellbeing of people recovering from mental health issues. This year the program won a Queensland Mental Health Week Achievement Award from Open Minds, and our own Dr Justin Chapman received an individual award for his work as program manager.

RUBY Rise Up, Be Yourself (RUBY) is a free physical fitness program for women who have experienced domestic and family violence and RUBY is now offered at 34 PCYC Queensland clubs around the state. Run by qualified fitness instructors and female police officers, RUBY is designed to empower women by building physical strength and confidence in a safe environment, providing a network of other women who they can share their experiences with and this year 447 women engaged in the program.

CHAMP Using boxing as a vehicle to foster personal growth and creating a positive and supportive relationship between participants and mentors including police officers, the Channelling Healthy Aggression Mentoring Project (CHAMP) provides positive role models to work alongside young people to help improve their life choices. This year saw 165 participants engaged in the program at five clubs.

Jennifer’s story “In June 2015 I suffered a major cycling accident, that resulted in massive internal injuries, cartilage damage in both hips, fractured ribs and a punctured lung. I was lucky to have lived and my recovery was slow and painful.

Before my accident I had been a very active member at my local PCYC Queensland gym. I had always worked on increasing and maintaining muscle strength due to my age. I had an enormous amount of rehabilitation after my accident and I needed to work on not only core strength, muscle building and making sure I was developing strength equally on both sides, but on my emotional support as well. My trainer Tom worked closely with my physiotherapist to ensure all these areas were addressed, even the emotional support, which came from the chatter during my sessions.

I was unable to get back to the gym until April 2016 and even then, I couldn’t lift one arm very high and I had very poor strength in my legs and core. Tom guided me beautifully and I am now back on my bike, increasing my strength all the time and lifting heavy weights again.

I have loved my association with PCYC Queensland over a number of years. I didn’t hesitate to go back to the supportive environment as soon as I was able after my accident, and I now go back to get fitter and stronger as I head into my mid-fifties.

I would personally like to thank Tom and Shaye for all their support and continued commitment to making me a stronger and fitter person who moves well. These are things I wasn’t sure I would ever accomplish again, and all the staff at my PCYC Queensland gym have given me the confidence and motivation to continue with my fitness journey.”

Events for the whole community PCYC Queensland clubs host a number of important community festivals and events around the state each year ranging from gala balls, golf days and fight nights to colour runs, barbecues and our signature event, PCYC embRACE. These events provide an opportunity to engage with the whole community and raise valuable funds to support our youth development and crime prevention programs, and we appreciate the ongoing local support our events receive.
