Yousef’s Story Dear Dear Your help in supporting vulnerable people in our communities is more critical than ever. COVID-19 has impacted our daily lives and will see drastic changes to society for the foreseeable future, but what happens to those young people at risk, vulnerable, without support? Thousands of young people who cannot attend school or that don’t have a home or a support network around them or come from an abusive home environment? During these uncertain times PCYC Queensland has continued to deliver to thousands of young people and helped families to stay connected, healthy and safe. This month, domestic violence prevention month, we will continue to support victims and their families by providing essential services to those affected across the state. Read our members stories of how PCYC Queensland has helped them. Will you help us continue to support Queenslanders today? PCYC Queensland and the Queensland Police Service work in 57 clubs from the Torres Strait to the Gold Coast, with 95% of our clubs in low socio-economic areas, and 60% are in the top 50 high needs areas of Queensland. “I looked at how alcohol has affected my family – I said I don’t want to do that. I don’t want to be like that. An alcoholic or a smoker.” Our members have been left more vulnerable than ever due to COVID-19 with those at risk, disadvantaged and disengaged being exposed to greater hardship, difficulty and uncertainty. PCYC Queensland staff and volunteers in many cases serves as their only outlet or support network, we need your support to help them change their stories. Sylvia’s Story Sylvia grew up and has lived her whole life in Yarrabah, a small indigenous community located 55 kilometres east of Cairns in Far North Queensland. Growing up in this community Sylvia saw first hand the impact that alcohol had on her way of life and that of the young people within the community. As a result of the exposure to drugs and alcohol Sylvia understood how that would negatively affect many people’s behaviour and wanted to desperately create a life for herself that did not involve substance abuse. Sylvia struggled with her own self-esteem and had nowhere to look to help her find her inner confidence. Sylvia found PCYC through a free fitness program for women, the program helped her to quickly improve fitness, receive life advice and improve her diet. From the firsthand experience of how the health and fitness program worked for her, Sylvia became keen to encourage others to take part has worked to be a positive role model for young women in the community. PCYC Queensland staff and volunteers in many cases serves as their only outlet or support network, we need your support to help them change their stories. “Every Friday night I do mentoring for my youth program … I get involved with a lot of youth every week” As a young boy, Yousef and his family were forced to flee their home in Myanmar (Burma) after the Rohingya people faced genocide after years of persecution and discrimination. His family sought sanctuary in a refugee camp in Bangladesh but continued to face further oppression and cruelty there. During the horrendous time in this refugee camp, Yousef’s father was falsely arrested and spent months in jail without being able to see Yousef and the rest of his family. Yousef’s family grew up in poverty, and without access to appropriate medical treatment his brother, who was born with a heart condition, was unable to get the required treatment from doctors in Bangladesh. Thanks to the United Nations (UN), Yousef and his family were granted sponsorship visas to Australia to enable his brother to receive the medical treatment he so desperately needed. Regrettably, Yousef’s brother passed away before reaching Australia to receive treatment. However, his family were fortunate to still be permitted to come to Australia, and this is when their story began to change. Through Yousef’s history of negative interactions with the law, he experienced anxiety and mistrust of authority figures. Whilst settling into life in Queensland and through his close community ties, he was referred to PCYC Queensland’s policeled mentoring program, Deep Blue Line. Yousef found a safe place and purpose participating in Deep Blue Line and other youth programs, and began volunteering at the club in office tasks and outdoor activities. Heather’s Story Heather has grown up with a mum on a disability pension and her father was unemployed whilst serving as her mother’s full-time carer. Heather turned to PCYC gymnastics for an outlet after her mum encouraged her to get involved in Rhythmic Gymnastics. PCYC Queensland provided opportunities for Heather to progress her passion for gymnastics whilst also upskilling her gymnastics through coaching and judging and using sport for positive change. Coming from an environment where her hard work was vital to her success Heather understood the importance of relishing every opportunity. Heather found a place where she could feel safe. A place full of opportunities, offering programs that allow for development and inclusion. “For a period (of time) I went to another club, then I came back to PCYC, just because the club was not working for me, it was nowhere near as engaging and supportive as PCYC. Broncos Charity Partnership PCYC Queensland is proud to have been chosen as an official Charity Partner of the Brisbane Broncos for 2020. Due to the pandemic disrupting the 2020 NRL season so heavily, this partnership will extend to the 2021 season. 9
